Learn more about Namibia
Best time to visit namibia.
The best time to visit Namibia depends on what you want to see and do. The dry season (May-September) is considered the best time to explore the Nabim Desert and go on safari as the temperatures are comfortable, vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around waterholes.
The shoulder months (April and October) may be a better option for a safari without peak season crowds; however, Namibia's national parks and reserves never feel too crowded.
While it can be trickier to spot game in the wet season (November-March), you might be lucky to see cute newborns as it coincides with the birthing season.

Culture and customs
Human settlement in Namibia can be traced back to as early as 15000 BC. In the time since, a diverse mix of people and communities have inhabited Namibia, culminating in a unique cultural heritage made of symbolic beliefs, traits, and traditions.
Today, most of the population sits within the larger Aawambo cultural group found mostly in the north of Namibia. Other large cultural groups that make up Namibia are the Nama, Damara, Kavango, and Ovaherero people.
Namibia was colonized by Germany from the late 1800s until 1919. Because of this, Europeans now make up 5 percent of the population. German influences can be seen throughout Namibia by way of cuisine, language, architecture and more. As much as 10 percent of Namibia’s population is made up of people who have migrated from South Africa.
The national language is English, however many Namibians also speak multiple Indigenous languages, such as the Aawambo language.
Eating and drinking
Like many countries, the majority of Namibia’s cuisine stems from the traditional cooking techniques and produce found in the area. In more recent times, immigrating cultures, specifically German and English, have added to the culinary scene. With a large variation of meats to cook with, it’s no surprise that many of the popular dishes feature meat in some way, often accompanied by a strong flavor and paired carbohydrate.
There are plenty of options for non-meat eaters, too. Some must-tries include green asparagus, omboga (dried spinach), Namibian olives, owawa mushrooms, geelrys (rice dish), oshigali (puree beans) and more.
Things to try in Namibia
A staple daily dish to many, mieliepap is a porridge-like meal usually made with cornflour and served with a selection of vegetables or even a meat protein like fish or goat.
A dish cooked in a small iron pot, potjiekos is a stew that typically combines game meat with hearty vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkin, and cabbage.
This dish is of Dutch and Afrikaans origin and serves as a way to store meat. By using a savory rub of flavored spices, salt, and vinegar, then left to air dry, biltong is a tasty snack that can last for a long time if cured correctly.
Namibian oysters are known to be meatier and fast-growing than in other areas of the world. They are likely to be prepared differently depending on where you go.
Fat cakes are a very popular snack in Namibia and other parts of the world. Essentially, fat cakes are just deep-fried dough balls that can be made into sweet or savory dishes. So, it's no wonder they're popular!
Geography and environment
Red desert dunes, rugged bushveld, dense woodlands, and plains of gravel make up Namibia's ancient terrain. Home to the monumental Fish River Canyon and sharing the iconic Kalahari Desert with South Africa and Botswana , Namibia has some of the most interesting landscapes in Africa , if not the world.
With little arable land and a warm climate, Namibia is prone to prolonged periods of drought, making farming difficult. Bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia , Namibia also has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where visitors can see where the desert meets the sea.
Top 10 places to visit in Namibia
1. fish river canyon.
There's more to the Fish River Canyon than its sheer size. With remote hiking trails, magnificent view points and raging river torrents during the rainy season, visitors will be breathless at the epic views and sense of isolation when visiting this canyon, believed to have been formed more than 500 million years ago.

5. Ship to shore
Namibia's Skeleton Coast has been called 'The Land God Made in Anger' by the San Bushmen and 'The Gates of Hell' by the Portuguese, and it's not hard to see why. With gale-force winds battering the shore, rolling surf, and thick fog, the Skeleton Coast has ruined many a mariner over the years. Evidence of this is scattered along the coastal sands, with a collection of rusting ships resting on the beaches - an eerie yet enthralling sight.
See the Skeleton Coast for yourself on a 17 day Premium Botswana & Namibia adventure.
6. Etosha National Park
Etosha National Park might be one of the best places to see some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. With its artificial watering holes and wide clear spaces, it’s likely you’ll grab some stellar snaps of the hard-to-miss inhabitants, including elephants, zebras, and even black rhinos.

8. Walvis Bay
Bird lovers should consider a stop at Walvis Bay, which is typically a stop on the way to nearby Swakopmund. Thousands of migratory birds, including the fan-favorite flamingos and portly-pouched pelicans are seen across the lagoons and bird sanctuaries.
Get out your binoculars and get ready to tick off some bird sightings as you visit Walvis Bay on our 10 day Premium Namibia adventure .
9. Swakopmund
If, while in Africa, you have a hankering for German architecture, stop by the spookily named Skeleton Coast for a visit to the town of Swakopmund. Wander through the mix of Namibian and German influences of this seaside stop, enjoying the open-air market and fresh sea breeze. You could also find yourself on a dolphin and seal boating adventure to nearby Cape Cross or out on a local fishing excursion.
Swakopmund is a destination fit for any African itinerary. That’s why you can find it on all our Namibia tours, including our 13 day Namibia Discovery tour , our 22 Amazing Southern Africa adventure , and our 63 day Africa Encompassed Southbound tours .
10. Orange River
Named the Orange River for its unique hue, this waterway has been an important part of Namibian and South African history – namely, the diamond rush in the 1800s. While diamond mining is a continuing business in the region, many people simply come to enjoy paddling the waters.
Enjoy a day on the water at Orange River while on a 13 day Namibia Discovery tour .
What’s travel without a meaningful souvenir or two? When in Namibia, Intrepid encourages travelers to support local makers who put time and effort into handmaking their wares. Culturally significant items are often available for purchase, especially in tourist areas. Speaking to the local sellers can be a great way to learn about their culture and understand the significance of what they are selling.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.
Things to buy in Namibia
Many of the beautiful textiles sold around Namibia can be used in a multitude of ways, e.g., for clothing, tableware, art, and more. Look to buy from traditional artists and makers in craft markets to support local talent and local industries.
Wooden crafts
A hand-carved wooden object is a great memento to take home from Namibia. There’s likely a souvenir for everyone with crockery, bowls, animal figures, dolls, instruments, and more. You’ll see traditional African masks for sale, which are often items that have a symbolic meaning to the local people.
Precious gems
As one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world, you’re likely to find a sparkly item or two in Namibia. Be sure to do some research or ask your guide about where to go, as not all shops will have the real deal.

Along the way, stop to look for elephants, rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, lions, and leopards. Your guide will share their in-depth knowledge about the fascinating world of wildlife with you. When the sun begins to set, you make your way to the Anderson Gate in the South of the national park. Not far from the gate, you will reach your accommodation. Take your time settling in and enjoy a hot shower. Dinner and overnight stay at Etosha Village.
Day 19 | Etosha National Park
Today starts with a hearty breakfast, followed by another game drive. No day on safari is the same so you can look forward to unique moments in nature. 14-Day Namibia Safari Tours
Namibia’s defining feature is its sheer emptiness. The sea of sand of the Namib Desert follows the country’s wild Atlantic coastline. Wildlife densities are low in this arid environment, but seeing a single gemsbok kicking up sand as it makes its way across the red dunes will take your breath away. You’ll have a different experience in Etosha National Park where animals congregate at the waterholes. On the outskirts of this wilderness are charming coastal towns giving testament to the rich history of Namibia’s melting pot of cultures. Add to all this top-class hotels and lodges, great food, excellent roads and welcoming people and you can understand why Namibia always scores high in top destinations awards.

6 Questions About 14-Day Namibia Safaris
Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.
What can I expect from a 14-day Namibia safari?
“On a 14-day Namibia road safari you’ll probably follow a circular circuit. You might spend a couple of nights in each of the main destinations with maybe a few 1-night stays in stopover places. Many iconic destinations in Namibia are mostly visited for their natural beauty. There is usually some wildlife around, but the real attraction is the scenery. This is true for Sossusvlei, the Fish River Canyon, Waterberg Plateau Park and, to a lesser extent, the Skeleton Coast and Damaraland. The main exception is Etosha NP, a prime wildlife destination that’s home to four of the Big Five (buffalo is absent). Here, you’ll go out on game drives, but it’s worth waiting for animals at the waterholes too. As anywhere in Africa, the daily routine on a Namibia safari is getting out and about early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Especially when looking for wildlife on game drives. It’s usually hot in the middle of the day and this is a good time to relax in the lodge.”
Where should I go on a two-week Namibia trip?
“There are a lot of places you can go to on a 14-day Namibia safari. You obviously can’t get to all the places of interest, so you’ll have to make some choices. If you’re going on a road trip (self-drive or guided), you should avoid trying to cover too much distance. Spend a bit more time in fewer places rather than trying to cram too much into the itinerary. Wildlife-lovers should definitely go to Etosha NP. You’ll see plenty of animals here at any time, but the viewing is exceptionally good during the Dry season. Expect to see lots of elephants and other herbivores drinking at the waterholes. Black rhino is a regular visitor too. The Sossusvlei area in Namib-Naukluft National Park is another must-see destination. Here you’ll find some of the most picture-perfect desert scenes of the country, and you’ll have the opportunity to climb one of the tallest sand dunes in Africa. The quaint historical town of Swakopmund is worth visiting for its German colonial architecture and the adventure activities on offer. From here you can make trips to the seal colony at Cape Cross, and Walvis Bay lagoon for its fabulous birdlife. The rugged region of Damaraland is home to desert-adapted wildlife, most notably elephants and rhinos, elaborate Bushman art and a petrified forest. Conveniently situated between Windhoek and Etosha NP is Okonjima Nature Reserve, a sanctuary for big cats. With its well-appointed lodges and incredible photographic opportunities, this place is a winner.”
What kinds of tours are available for a 14-day Namibia safari?
“Namibia can be experienced in many different ways on a two-week safari. Use the filters on the SafariBookings website to hone in on your preferences. Firstly, you can choose between a private tour or a shared tour. You’ll know whether a group tour works for you. Many people love it, but it certainly isn’t for everybody. As some costs are shared, a group tour is usually more cost-effective. Especially so if you are a single traveler. Private tours, on the other hand, allow a bit more flexibility. Not all shared tours are the same though; group sizes can be anything from six to 32 people. Larger groups often travel in overland trucks, while groups of up to six or eight people usually get around in a minivan or 4x4 vehicle. Namibia is well equipped for independent travelers and crime is very rare. It’s no surprise then that a self-drive safari is a popular option too. You can simply rent a car and prebook all accommodation yourself or even improvise as you go along. But why not let the professionals help you? They have the experience and knowledge to set up your self-drive trip, make all bookings and offer assistance while you’re on the road. This way, you won’t lose any valuable time in case of a breakdown or other problem.”
Should I choose a fly-in or road safari?
“Traveling around by car or small aircraft are both good options in Namibia. Namibia is a wonderful destination for a road trip. Between destinations, you’ll get to appreciate the emptiness of the wide-open spaces. It’s a big part of what Namibia is all about. You’ll probably follow a circular route visiting several highlights on your 14-day safari. Having said all that, there are obvious advantages to a fly-in safari too. Although generally more pricey, it is a good way to save time traveling between places, and you can easily mix and match highlights from all over the country. Fly-in packages are usually tied in with luxury accommodation. In some cases these lodges are in remote locations and offer a high level of exclusivity. There is no reason why you can’t combine a road and fly-in safari. Fly to a few out-of-the-way places and drive the rest.”
What is the best time of the year for a Namibia safari?
“Namibia can be visited at any time of the year. It has a dry desert climate; rainfall is sporadic and rarely interferes with travel plans. When it rains, it usually comes in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. Wildlife viewing is, however, best from June to October, the middle and end of the Dry season. This is especially so in Etosha NP, where animals are attracted to waterholes when the bush dries out. It is hot and humid in the Wet season from November to February. The Dry season months are very pleasant during the day, but it can get very chilly at night. April and May are lovely months; temperatures are mild and rainfall is rare. As these months punctuate the end of the Wet season, the scenery tends to be green and the air crisp. December to April is the low season. You’ll find few visitors around and low-season prices might apply.”
How much will this safari cost?
“You can expect a starting price of US$3,500 per person for a 14-day shared tour. Mid-range private tours start at about US$4,500 per person for two weeks. You’ll find a wide range of prices for a 14-day Namibia safari. Lots of variables determine the cost. Joining a camping group tour is probably the cheapest way to travel. It’s lots of fun too. On some tours you might have to participate in camp duties, but mostly all will be taken care of. Alternatively, you can book a lodge safari. Your choice of accommodation will affect the overall price of the tour. Mid-range safaris, offering competitive prices, are the most popular. A great way to economize is to travel in the low season or the shoulder months. Although wildlife viewing isn’t as good at this time (in Etosha particularly), the Green season (also known as the Wet season) is particularly beautiful and uncrowded. Once you’ve narrowed down your priorities, get a few quotes before making a final decision.”

Sand, salt pans and stars: Southern Africa’s wild west
With the exception of the verdant Zambezi Region, most of Namibia is comprised of harsh and inhospitable desert, but I’ve always found it staggeringly beautiful. Namibia was the first place I really travelled in Africa; I’ve been back...

Incredible trip of 10 days all around Namibia. The travel agency organised everything and personalised it. All the lodges were excellent. Can't decide what was better, the dunes in Sossusvlei, or the wildlife in the North.
Namibia was one of the most enchanting, fascinating, and beautiful countries I've ever been to!

Great way of seeing the country and meeting some of its people. Last day we were expecting lunch either at a cafe or on the go but apart from an apple cake that was it until we returned to the guesthouse mid afternoon.

7 Day Southern Namibia & Sossusvlei Camping Safari
As an operator Chameleon Safaris Namibia is excellent. From the start before I even booked the tour they communicated well and answered all my questions and concerns. All the staff were punctual at pickup, very polite and professional. They clearly know everything in order to run a successful tour. Do ask them all the questions you want and raise your concerns with them. I booked this tour because it had all the landscape places I want to go to. I would have loved an accommodated one but the camping exceeded my expectations. It is not luxurious but well organized so it was still enjoyable. The nights were cold but with the tents, blankets and sleeping bag which I rented from Chameleon, it was bearable. The food was great in spite of the limitations of a campsite. We always had enough to eat. Our guide Gideon always make sure we ate first even though often there was not much left for him. He is driver, tour guide, cook, time keeper, friend, photography guide,..... whatever it takes, he can take on the role with his vast knowledge of all the places we visited and his country. On the last night he lead my friend and I in the dark to the correct Quivertree, correct angle to shoot the Milky Way. That in spite of the fact that he is not a photographer. He had the knowledge and experience to know where to go. He stayed on to wait for us but thinking we will take a long time we asked him to go back to his duties at the campsite. After a long day driving it will not be right to keep him up till late with still more chores to be done before he could get some sleep. Please understand that this is not an easy camping itinerary. You can be more comfortable at lodges. But this southern part of Namibia has many beautiful locations to visit and this itinerary includes some of the best. It is definitely worth the effort for me. I am one very happy camper. Come prepared to enjoy this part of beautiful Namibia, the hospitality of the Namibians, and the well-organised and professional tour operator, Chameleon Safaris Namibia. Ask them how you can prepare yourself for the tour of your choice and how you can make the best of your tour. Thank you Gideon, Bronnie and the whole Chameleon team!

My family has just come back from doing a spectacular safari in Namibia. The safari took us through Etosha NP, Swakompund, Sesriem and Sossusvlei hosted by guide Steinner. Planning for the trip was smooth as Anna from admin was only one email/message away. Main highlights of the safari are the elephants in Etosha, Etosha pan shimmering in the sun, biking at Swakompund and the alluring beauty of Namibia. Hotel and lodges were nice and had good food. It was my ideal vacation!!!

What people love about 7 Day Namibia Tours
The tour was well organized. The guide Shawn went beyond and was so accommodating. The lodges were beautiful and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful country. Lufthansa flight cancellations could have spoiled our trip but Shawn again dealt with it and our holiday continued seamlessly. Thank you for the Namibia experience!
