Both seasons avoid the extreme heat of the summer and the chilly, wet conditions of the winter, ensuring a more enjoyable and fruitful visit to this breathtaking landscape of Vietnam.

Ninh Binh is a small city 2 hours south of Hanoi, in the north of Vietnam. When people refer to Ninh Binh when travelling, they are most likely referring to the province of Ninh Binh, rather than the city itself. Known as ‘ Halong bay on land’, Ninh Binh province is an area of natural beauty and is definitely worth visiting when you are travelling in Vietnam. For that reason, I’ve put together this complete guide to visiting Ninh Binh covering what to do, how to get there and where to stay.

The main towns in Ninh Binh province are Trang An and Tam Coc. This is where most people stay when visiting Ninh Binh province. The area here boasts stunning landscape with karst mountains, deep green valleys and winding rivers. It is here where the film Kong: Skull island was filmed – something Ninh Binh is now well known for.

During my month-long trip to Vietnam in May 2022, I spent 5 relaxing days staying in Trang An and exploring the beautiful scenery around the province of Ninh Binh. In this guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know about visiting Ninh Binh, including the must see attractions, as well as tips and advice for planning your trip.

Before we get into the practical information of what you need to know before visiting Ninh Binh, here’s 9 of the best things to do in Ninh Binh, including the top must-see attractions in Trang An and Tam Coc.

1. Take the Trang An Scenic Landscape boat ride

If you only do one activity in Ninh Binh, make sure it is the boat ride through the Trang An Scenic Landscape. It is without a doubt, the best thing to do in Ninh Binh.

Tickets for the Trang An boat ride are 150k vnd each (£5.30) and the boat seats 4 adults. If you have less than 4 people in your party, you will be paired up with other people to make a full boat. (If you want the boat to yourself, you can pay extra to have a private boat). The boat is rowed by hand and the guide will give you information about key sights along the way. We were joined by a lovely Vietnamese family and therefore the guide we were given spoke no English but he did point out wildlife and various sights to us along the way.

There are three routes you can choose from for your boat ride. To be honest we really didn’t know which to pick! We ended up choosing route 2, but it seemed that whatever route you did, you all ended up seeing the main attractions anyway, so I don’t think it really mattered that much. The boat ride lasts anywhere between 1.5hours – 3 hours, depending on how busy it is and along the way you will stop at a couple of small islands where you can get off the boat and wander around the small temples and gardens.

A temple on a small island in Trang An Scenic Landscape

The scenery floating through Trang An is incredible! The water is so calm and still and it felt very tranquil gliding past the huge limestone and karst mountains which rose up straight from the water.

Trang An’s claim to fame is that parts of the film Kong: Skull Island were shot here and we saw the famous rock where Kong leaves his bloody handprint.

You can also take a boat ride at Tam Coc, but having spoken to other travellers who did this, I would avoid it. The Tam Coc boat ride has a bad reputation and we heard of instances where the rowers just stopped in the middle of the river and refused to continue rowing until they were tipped. We also heard of stories where fruit and souvenir sellers were allowed to stop by the boat and when the tourists refused to buy anything, the seller gave the rower items and then demanded money for them from the tourists.

There was nothing like this in Trang An, and in fact, they actively discouraged this behaviour. The Trang An boat ride was the highlight of my time in Ninh Binh and is one of the most popular and well known activities in the area.

2. Climb up Hang Múa viewpoint

If you have seen photos of Ninh Binh, then you have most likely seen images of the Hang Múa viewpoint. This spot is one of the most visited attractions in Ninh Binh and rightly so, the views are incredible!

Hang Múa sits in between Trang An and Tam Coc, and therefore is easily accessible by bicycle from both places. The entrance fee for Hang Múa is 100k vnd each (£3.50) and you can park your bicycle at the entrance for 5k vnd (20p). Tip: As you cycle down the road towards the entrance, you will see parking signs and people coming into the road to guide you to small parking lots. The fee for these parking areas is higher at 10k vnd (35p) and you will have to walk the rest of the way, so just ignore them and go all the way to the end.

The main attraction at Hang Múa is the viewpoints. There are two small mountains next to one another which you can climb. There are stone steps all the way up, and it should take no more than 15-20 minutes to reach the top. Just be careful, especially if it has rained as the steps are uneven and there is no handrail. The mountain on the left side (as you stand facing up the stairs) has the better views. From here you can see down to the river and rowing boats of Trang An on one side and across to the other mountain on the other side, with views of rice fields and the bamboo bridge in the centre. The walk up to the top of the viewpoint was not too strenuous and didn’t take too long, but the views from here are truly stunning.

Once you’ve made it back down from the viewpoint, there’s a couple of cafes at the bottom around the small lake where you can get a drink or ice cream. You can also walk along the bamboo bridge which stands above a lily pond, surrounded by the rice fields. There were plenty of locals dressed in beautiful floaty dresses and even heels at this spot – it is definitely a great location for those instagram photos!

3. Visit Am Tien lake

Am Tiên lake is a small attraction north of Trang An. It is one of the lesser known spots in the area, but it is a nice place to stop for an hour if you are cycling nearby, or if you are visiting Hoa Lu ancient capital. Am Tiên lake is a man-made lake completely surrounded by mountains. Two large tunnels have been carved into the mountain in order to reach the lake.

At either end of the lake are two small temple buildings and a temple cave at one end. There’s also a little shop and cafe by the shoreline. From the main tunnel entrance, make your way to the main temple, situated above the shop. This is where you will get the best views of the lake.

There is a smooth, paved path all the way around the lake, so it is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. You can rent bicycles at the entrance but honestly you don’t need to. The path around the lake is only about 1-2km long but it is a nice, pretty stroll. There’s also several carts and even a cinderella style carriage that you can hire! You can see goats grazing on the mountainside and watch the large fish in the lake.

On the lake there are a couple of small rowing boats which have been decorated with colourful fake flowers, perfect for photo opportunities.

Entry to Am Tiên lake is only 20k vnd each (70p) and parking for a bicycle is 5k vnd (20p). You probably only need an hour here but it is a nice activity to do whilst you are cycling around.

Am Tien Lake in Trang An, Vietnam

4. Cycle around the countryside

Cycling around the countryside is one of the best activities in Trang An and Tam Coc, plus if your homestay lends you their bicycles, it is completely free! You don’t really need to follow a map or have a planned route (although I always recommend downloading an offline google map of the area when you are out exploring), just set off on your bike and enjoy the scenery!

As much as I enjoyed cycling round the beautiful town of Hoi An , I think the landscapes here were even better! Cycling around the countryside you will pass rice fields, mountains, rivers, lakes and grazing buffalo. There’s plenty of local cafes to stop and get lunch or a smoothie. One particularly scenic spot for lunch is the Trang An Lotus lake Homestay. It’s hard to explain just how beautiful and tranquil the landscape is in this area, you definitely have to experience it for yourself!

Cycling around Tam Coc and Trang An, Vietnam

5. Spend a few hours in Tam Coc

Tam Coc is the place to go if you are looking for more westernised restaurants and cafes. You can get Indian, Mexican, fast food and of course local Vietnamese food here. There’s even several bars and pubs if you fancy more of a night out too. Tam Coc is also where you will find grocery stores, pharmacies, tour companies and even massage salons. Spend an hour or so walking around Tam Coc lake and down the high street, treating yourself to lunch or a smoothie.

6. Visit Hoa Lu Ancient capital

Surrounded by the limestone mountains of Trang An, is Hoa Lu – the ancient capital of Vietnam. Hoa Lu was Vietnam’s capital city for 41 years and it’s a place of historical importance, with many temples, pagodas and tombs on this site. The Dinh Tien Hoang Temple and Le Hoan Temple are two of the most popular sites in the complex – these 17th century temples were built in the style of the previous 11th century buildings which preceded them. Another notable building in Hao Lu is Nhat Tru Pagoda, which dates back to the 10th century.

Many people who visit Ninh Binh take a trip to Hoa Lu, it is one of the most popular sites in the area. However, we actually chose to skip this as we had read reviews where people had said it was quite touristy and the temple buildings were not so impressive. We had just visited the ancient city of Hue a week before this trip and we found ourselves disappointed there, so we decided not to visit Hoa Lu. Perhaps after visiting Ankgor Wat in Cambodia and the many beautiful temples in Chiang Mai , Thailand we were just a bit spoiled by the amazing things we had already seen!

If you are interested to learn about the history of Vietnam and enjoy visiting temples, then Hoa Lu could be a great place for you to visit. It’s only 5km from Trang An and can be reached by bicycle or taxi.

Hoa Lu Ancient capital, Ninh Binh

7. Go bird watching at Van Long nature reserve

Van Long nature reserve sits 20km north of Trang An, on the edge of Ninh Binh Province. Similar to the Trang An Scenic Landscape, the main thing to do in Van Long is to ride a boat on the winding canals and rivers that make up the wetlands of Van Long reserve. The protected area is dotted with limestone mountains and over 30 caves. The mountains and forests around the wetlands are home to many langurs, but it is perhaps most well known for being a great place to visit for bird watching. Whether you are an avid bird-spotter or not, the Van Long wetlands are a great place to visit on a day trip from Trang An or Tam Coc.

8. Trek through Cúc Phương National Park

Cúc Phương National Park is a preserved rainforest in the north west of Ninh Binh province. As the largest nature reserve in Vietnam, it holds significant importance and is home to over 2000 plant species and 300 types of birds, as well as reptiles and mammals. One of the best things to do in Cuc Phuong is to go jungle trekking. There are various treks you can take, ranging from easy, 1 hour long walks to guided full day treks. You can also go kayaking on the lake and visit the langurs and gibbons in the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre.

9. Take some time to relax

Most of the homestays and hostels in Tam Coc and Trang An have a pool and an area to sit and enjoy the scenery. The whole atmosphere of this area is tranquil and calming, so take some time to enjoy some relaxation by the pool, read a book, or sit with a coffee and enjoy the beautiful, quiet surroundings. It really is very peaceful here, so make sure you soak it up before you head off to the likes of Hanoi, where nothing is quiet!

Tips and advice for visiting Ninh Binh province, Vietnam

Now you know the best things to do and the must-see attractions in Ninh Binh, let’s cover some top tips, advice and practical information for visiting this beautiful part of the country.

How to get to Ninh Binh?

The best and most popular way to travel to Ninh Binh city is by bus. Buses and minivans run regularly between Hanoi and Ninh Binh city and can be booked via 12go. The journey is only 1 hour 45 minutes. You will then need to catch a taxi to travel between the city of Ninh Binh and where you are staying in Tam Coc or Trang An. We paid 160k vnd (£5.50) for a taxi from Trang An to Ninh Binh city and then £11.50 for two people to get a minivan to Hanoi.

If you are travelling to Ninh Binh city from the south of Vietnam, there are buses and trains which run from Hue, Da Nang (for Hoi An ) and Dong Hoi (for Phong Nha). You can book these online in advance, or get your homestay to book for you. You could also fly into Hanoi from the south of the country and then get a bus from Hanoi.

What’s the best way to explore Ninh Binh?

The best way to explore the area of Ninh Binh province is definitely by bicycle! You can easily cycle between Trang An and Tam Coc in 30 minutes, through rice fields and alongside the river. Cycling around the beautiful landscape is actually one of the best things to do in Ninh Binh! Most of the homestays have free bicycles which you can use during your stay. For some of the attractions which are farther out, like Cúc Phương National Park and Van Long nature reserve, your homestay can easily arrange a local taxi for you. If you want to rent a scooter and explore further out on your own, most homestays can organise this for you. Just be aware that a lot of the roads in this area are gravel roads with a lot of potholes, so it will be a bumpy ride!

Where to stay in Ninh Binh province?

Don’t make the mistake that some travellers do and stay in Ninh Binh city. There’s nothing to see or do in Ninh Binh city and you will need to get taxis every day to and from the main sights and attractions in Tam Coc, Trang An and the wider area of Ninh Binh province.

Tam Coc and Trang An are the two main areas in Ninh Binh province to stay. Tam Coc is the main town and here you will find a busy high street with cafes, restaurants and shops. There are several hostels in Tam Coc, one of the main ones is The Banana Tree hostel , by Tam Coc river.

If you prefer somewhere quieter and more surrounded by nature, then head to Trang An. The area of Trang An is not as concentrated, or as ‘touristy’ as Tam Coc and doesn’t have a main centre. In Trang An the accommodation is mostly homestays and the shops and restaurants are more local. Many of the homestays in Trang An are situated alongside the river and nestled under the mountains, like the Trang An memory homestay which we stayed in (and had a great time!)

The best place to stay in Ninh Binh really is down to what experience you would prefer. If you want to be able to go out in the evening and have a choice of lively places to eat and drink, then your best bet is to stay in Tam Coc. However, if you want to be surrounded by nature and have mountains and riverside views, and don’t mind eating at your homestay most evenings, then choose somewhere in Trang An.

Trang An, Vietnam

The landscape around Trang An and Tam Coc in Ninh Binh Province is just beautiful

When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?

The rainy season in Ninh Binh falls between May – October. The months of August and September are the worst, receiving high levels of heavy rainfall, flooding, frequent storms and occasional typhoons. Travel during these two months is not recommended.

The best time to visit Ninh Binh is during the dry season, between November to April, when the weather is cooler and drier.

How many days do you need in Ninh Binh?

I would recommend having at least two full days in Ninh Binh province. This way you can cover the must-see attractions in the area before continuing your journey in Vietnam. In two days, I would recommend taking the Trang An boat ride, visiting Hang Mua viewpoint and enjoying a cycle ride around the countryside. If you have a little more time to spare, and would like to explore at a more leisurely pace, then you could easily fill 4 days in Ninh Binh, visiting the various sights and attractions further out such as Cúc Phương National Park and Van Long nature reserve.

Are there ATMs in Tam Coc and Trang An?

There are two ATMS in Tam Coc. One is at the BIDV bank on the main high street. The second is outside the front of the Ninh Binh Hidden Charm hotel on the main road going into Tam Coc.

There is also an ATM at the Trang An Scenic Landscape visitor centre (where the boats depart from).

However, I’d really recommend making sure that you have some cash with you as well.

What facilities are there in Tam Coc and Trang An?

Tam Coc has plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants, as well as a couple of pharmacies. However, facilities are limited in Trang An, with just a few local shops selling snacks dotted around the countryside. If you are staying in Trang An, it may be worthwhile bringing some snacks with you, or making a trip to one of the grocery stores in Tam Coc to pick up a couple of things to take back to your homestay.

11 Places to Visit in Ninh Binh + Things To Do

For people who are not very keen on the noise in Hanoi, Ninh Binh, a city in a state of the same name, makes a good alternative. It is a place of unspoiled beauty; and of peace and quiet.

Ninh Binh is a haven for nature lovers. Its prized attractions are splendid sceneries of limestone formations, mossy pagodas, and untainted landscapes. What’s the best way to experience all those natural wonders? It is through a paddleboat. Traversing Trang An in a paddleboat allows you to appreciate the jungle-covered karsts all over the place. Paddleboats also stop by temples, so you do not miss the city’s captivating culture and history.

There are not so many attractions within Ninh Binh city itself. But it is a fantastic starting point for exploring Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and Van Long, which keep even more of Vietnam’s natural wonders. Plus, it is accessible from Hanoi, a two-hour ride by bus or train, where international flights come in.

What to Visit in Ninh Binh ?

There are 5 attractions that are amazing, and I list them first. They are located 10 to 20 Km from the city. There are also some several extra attractions in between and I also mention them here. 5 days is an adequate amount of time to dedicate to Ninh Binh. If you have extra days you can visit some natural reserves that are about 40 Km away and are less visited by tourists. There is a small fee to enter the attractions (30 to 100 K Dong), the boat trips are more expensive.

See the Tourist attractions on Maps 2 and 3 above.

How to arrive to the attractions ?

  • Motorbike – If you can ride a motorbike, this is the best option. Rent one. See details in the Transport section of the previous page.
  • Organised tour. You can ask your hotel about it or book online.
  • On foot or bicycle, if the distance is short.

“Tam Coc” – Lake and river – boat trip 2 hours

Your hotel is probably on the lake , so you just need to walk to the boarding point and take a private boat trip.

ninh binh tourist map

The boat starts on the lake but then it continues into a river. Each boat can take 4 people (except the driver) but for foreigners they limit it to 2. The joke is that non Vietnamese are fatter people (it’s true, by the way). I suspect that the reason is that they want to increase the chance of getting a Tip from the passengers.

ninh binh tourist map

The trip lasts almost 2 hours. It costs about 250 K Dong per person. A tip is expected by the driver of the boat (I gave 100 K Dong).

ninh binh tourist map

The boat drivers can also paddle with their foot (as you can see on the photo at the top of the page). Most of the boat drivers are women. If you climb the hill of Hang Mua , you will see a part of the trajectory of the boats from above.

ninh binh tourist map

At spring time, there is agriculture on the water and it looks very beautiful. On the way, expect to meet some sellers on boats. They will put pressure on you to buy a fruit (for you or for your boat driver).

How to get there ?

  • Your hotel is probably on the lake , so you just need to walk to the boarding point and take a private boat trip. The distance from Ninh Binh city is about 7 Km. See the location on Maps 2 and 3 above.
  • You can arrive by : Rented motorbike or Taxi or Organised tour as explained on the first page (transport section).

“Trang An” – Boat trip 3 hours

The scenery here is even more amazing than the boat trip of Tam Coc.

Like in Tam Coc, also here each boat can take up to 4 people but in this case there is no limit of 2 people per boat for foreigners. The price is around 250 K Dong per person to join a boat, but if you are a couple or more you will pay for the entire boat and it will be cheaper.

ninh binh tourist map

When you buy the ticket, you are asked to choose between 3 possible trajectories. I was told that path number 3 is the prettiest, so I took it and it was indeed beautiful.

ninh binh tourist map

The 3 trajectories have also some common stops. It seems that trajectory number 1 passes through a lot of caves (but all the trajectories include caves).

ninh binh tourist map

During the navigation of 3 hours, the boat stops several times in places with nice pagodas and the possibility to buy ice cream and water.

ninh binh tourist map

Take note that you are exposed to the hot sun, so take protections like hat, long cloth, umbrella and sun cream lotion. During the sail inside caves you have a break from the sun.

ninh binh tourist map

  • The distance from Ninh Binh city is about 8 Km. The distance from Tam Coc lake is about 10 Km . See the location on Maps 2 and 3 above.

A huge complex with amazing religious Buddhist monuments and a very high Pagoda (several world records).

ninh binh tourist map

In the following picture, you can see the plan of the area. It is huge, about 1 Km square. If you really want to see every corner, you will need at least 5 hours.

ninh binh tourist map

Entrance to the complex is free but you may need to pay if you want to get to the top of the high pagoda (50 K Dong) and if you want to arrive from the parking area by electric car instead of walking 30 minutes (price 30 K Dong).

ninh binh tourist map

The high pagoda has an elevator, so don’t worry about stairs.

ninh binh tourist map

The view from upstairs is amazing.

ninh binh tourist map

The high pagoda is not the only interesting monument in the complex. There are several covered structures :

ninh binh tourist map

With Buddhas and very beautiful statues.

ninh binh tourist map

Note the bird which is standing on a turtle

ninh binh tourist map

If you like turtles, you will find a lot of them in this complex.

ninh binh tourist map

I mean, really a lot of turtles

ninh binh tourist map

Along the complex, there are 2 parallel corridors with a lot of statues. You walk for hundreds of meters and see beautiful statues.

ninh binh tourist map

As always, you can know in which part of the statue, people like to touch, for luck.

ninh binh tourist map

At the left upper corner of the complex, there is a hill

ninh binh tourist map

If you climb this hill, you will see 2 amazing religious caves

ninh binh tourist map

With interesting statues

ninh binh tourist map

Apparently, religious construction on this hill is still going on, with a lot of energy

You may see peaceful monks walking in the area

ninh binh tourist map

On the upper right corner of the complex, there is a huge beautiful Buddha.

ninh binh tourist map

  • The distance from Ninh Binh city or Tam Coc lake is about 20 Km. See the location on Maps 2 and 3 above.

The area with structures is relatively small

The place was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries.

or make connections with the local cows

ninh binh tourist map

There is a small entrance fee of 30 K Dong.

ninh binh tourist map

The place is very close to the beautiful Tuyet Tinh Coc lake.

ninh binh tourist map

The city of Ninh Binh is not interesting at all. Still, in the northern part of the city, there is a water canal and a bridge in form of a Pagoda and it is all beautifully illuminated in the evenings. During day time, you will probably pass here on your vehicle on your way to the attractions outside town.

ninh binh tourist map

  • About 2 or 3 Km from Ninh Binh city center. See the location on Maps 2 and 3 above. The monuments are marked in yellow.
  • You can arrive by : Foot, bicycle, Rented motorbike or Taxi or Organised tour as explained on the first page (transport section).

If you stay to sleep around the lake of Tam Coc (you do, probably), then you can make great walking excursions in the area. You can arrive by foot to the Temple Thai Vi , it is just 1 Km away and on the way, you will have wonderful scenery.

ninh binh tourist map

Just walk around the lake and continue to walk behind it

ninh binh tourist map

The view around is great

ninh binh tourist map

On your way, you will see a sort of cultural exhibition.

ninh binh tourist map

You may meet ducks

ninh binh tourist map

and chickens

ninh binh tourist map

It is a Buddhist temple

ninh binh tourist map

There is a small hill to climb (just a few stairs) and you get a nice view

ninh binh tourist map

At the top, there is cave

ninh binh tourist map

The place is surrounded by canals of water and there are promoters with small boats proposing you a private boat tour.

ninh binh tourist map

Somehow, I was the only one visiting the place, and a dog wanted to let me know what he thinks about my visit

ninh binh tourist map

The Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex definitely must be the first of popular tourist attractions in Ninh Binh. UNESCO has named it both a natural heritage and a world cultural heritage site . Trang An is popular with tourists because of its beautiful scenery and mysterious caves with names like “Bright cave,” “Dark cave,” “Nau Ruou cave,” “Dia Linh cave”…

Trang An complex - an UNESCO recognized tourist site

The best time to visit Trang An is in the fall, when the water lilies will be in full bloom and make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale.

You will need about 3–4 hours to see all of Trang An’s caves and landscapes, and you will use a boat to get there. The price of a ticket is 200,000 VND per person, which includes a ticket to see the sights and a boat ticket. There is one boat for every four people.

Tam Coc-Bich Dong is about 7 km from the center of Ninh Binh. It is the second most popular tourist attraction in Ninh Binh, after Trang An. Tam Coc-Bich Dong, also known as “Ha Long on land” or “the second best southern cave,” is popular with tourists from all over the world. It is made up of three caves, Ca cave, Hai cave, and Ba cave, which were formed by the flow of the Ngo Dong River. The caves are surrounded by mountain ranges.

Golden rice fields on the Tam Coc-Bich Dong riverway

The best time to go to this Ninh Binh tourist spot is between the last two weeks of May and the first week of June. Because at this time of year, the rice fields on both sides of the Ngo Dong River are at their most beautiful. You can ride a boat and see how heaven, river, mountain, and rice fields all work together.

Tam Coc Bich Dong is only accessible by boat, just like Trang An. A ticket to get in costs 120,000 VND, and a ticket for the boat costs 150,000 VND. The distance to visit is 6 km, and it should take about 2 hours to get there and back. The first time you go, it will be a little dark because there is no electricity, but once you get used to it, you will find the landscape here to be magical and beautiful.

View from top of Hang Mua

Mua Cave is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Ninh Binh. Everyone who goes here must stop by it at least once. You have to climb more than 500 stone steps to get to the top of Hang Mua. If you go to Mua Cave in May or June, when Tam Coc’s rice field is ready, you can see a picture of “golden season on the river” from above. This is a beautiful natural scene.

The Van Long lagoon, which is in the northern part of the Gia Vien district, is known as the largest wetland nature reserve in the Northern Midland Delta. Since it is a river area, you still have to go by boat. The boat fare for two people is 60,000 VND, and each person has to pay 20,000 VND to get in.

Van Long lagoon

Tourists nickname Van Long lagoon “a bay without waves” because the quiet, transparent water is see-through. The boat will transport you through ravines and unique limestone formations, where you’ll see rare creatures and birds.

Hundreds of sheep and green grass create a peaceful scene in Gia Hung sheep field.

Gia Hung sheep field is a stunning photo site in Ninh Binh, 25 kilometres from the city center. This sheep field is beside the lagoon dyke. The sheep aren’t always there, but if you walk along the dike, you’ll find them. The charge to take pictures is 100k / person, which is high, but you’ll get great shots. After photographing the sheep in the afternoon, try kiting.

An Tiem cave, also called Tuyet Tinh Coc (Love Cave), is a popular Ninh Binh attraction. It’s small yet has lyrical beauty, excellent for photos.

Tuyet TInh Coc

A clear blue lake surrounded by mountains is the most striking thing here. You have to go up more than 200 stone steps through the cliff to get here. The price of a ticket is 20,000 VND per person, and parking is 10,000 VND per bike. A visit should take about 3 hours.

Anyone who has paddled through a river and watched birds in Thung Nham Bird Park will never forget it.

Thung Nham Bird Park is one of the very unique  tourist attractions in Ninh Binh.  This is the residence of more than 40 types of birds such as stork, bittern, heron, lesser whistling duck, teal, white-rumped shama… In which, it is impossible not to mention two rare bird species recorded in the Red Book – flamingo and hornbill.

At sunset, the Thung Nham Bird Park is at its most beautiful. You can watch a flock of white storks spread their wings and fly to their nests, which is a rare and interesting sight.

If you want to see a lot of Ninh Binh’s nature, Cuc Phuong National Forest is a great place to go. This is Vietnam’s first national forest. It is also a well-known old-growth forest with a complicated terrain and a lot of different plants and animals. There are still a lot of rare species and langur species here.

Cuc Phuong National Park

When you visit this Ninh Binh tourist attraction, you can see the wild and mysterious features of an old forest with trees that are thousands of years old. You can also see historical caves like Moon Dew cave, Chua cave, Thuy Tien cave, Nguoi Xua cave,… Furthermore, there are many services for tourists here, such as hot springs with services for sightseeing, ecology, trekking, and so on.

Non Nuoc mountain

This mountain is right in Ninh Binh city, in the Thanh Binh ward. You can find it between the Non Nuoc bridge and the Ninh Binh bridge, where the Day and Van rivers meet. Non Nuoc mountain is not only called a “fairytale landscape,” but it is also called a “poetry museum” because more than 40 poems by famous people are carved into the cliff.

The Tam Diep pineapple hill at the Dong Dao farm in Tam Diep city, Ninh Binh, is a very popular place to take photos. This pineapple hill is about 5500 hectares wide. Inside it are thousands of green pineapple bushes that stretch out in all directions.

Tam Diep pineapple hill

To get here, start in the middle of the city and head east until you reach Quang Trung Street. From there, take National Highway 1A towards Quang Son. At the end of the Ho Xuan Huong-Dang Tien Dong road, turn left onto Dong Giao and ask a local where the pineapple fields are.

What is the one unspoiled tourist attraction in Ninh Binh that you have to see? To find out, let’s go to Thung Nang in Dam Khe village, Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district. Tourism hasn’t grown much in Thung Nang, which is why the wild natural beauty is still there. It’s a great place for people who want to experience as much of an idyllic and poetic natural space as they can.

Thung Nang

You will have to take a boat to get to Thung Nang. You can buy a ticket at the gate for 60,000 VND per person, which includes the fare to Thach Bich wharf. Then, the boat will take you slowly to see the beautiful sights of Thung Nang as the sun shines.

The Ninh Binh Kenh Ga hot mineral spring is about 15 km northwest of the city center. It is known as one of the 5 most beautiful open-air hot springs in Vietnam.

If you want to relax, you can absolutely go to Kenh Ga Hot Springs

From the city center, you take National Highway 1A to Gian Khau junction, Gia Tran commune, then road 477 through Me town to Dong Chua wharf. Then you take a boat down the Hoang Long River until you get to the Kenh Ga floating village.

Dong Chuong Lake is a new tourist destination in Ninh Binh that has been getting a lot of attention because of its beautiful natural state. The beauty of the lake’s mountains and rivers will make you feel like you’re in a “miniature Da Lat” when you come to visit.

Dong Chuong lake

The lake is in two communes, Phu Loc and Phu Long, in the Nho Quan district. To get there, take Trang An street to Pho Ria, turn left, and visit about 3 km.

A Budget Guide to Ninh Binh: Bicycle Map + Itinerary

Ninh Binh is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage destination just south of Hanoi, Vietnam. Ninh Binh is often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land” because they both have impressive karsts and caves with boat rides for tourists.

In our opinion, Ninh Binh makes a great less-crowded alternative to Ha Long Bay, whether you’re just doing a day trip from Hanoi or staying a couple nights.

Although Ninh Binh is not completely off the beaten path – there are frequent tour buses bringing in Vietnamese and foreign tourists – it is still less crowded and more affordable than a visit to Ha Long Bay. And beautifully captivating in its own right!

How long to stay in Ninh Binh

We had the opportunity to stay in Ninh Binh for a full week. This was mostly because we needed to continue our digital nomad work between excursions.

Most visitors stay 2 or 3 days in Ninh Binh , and that’s an ideal amount of time to see the highlights. With three full days, you could see every main attraction in the area.

Ninh Binh can also be done as a day trip from Hanoi, or combined with a multi-day Ha Long Bay tour.

We’ve done this day trip on our own by taking the early train from Hanoi and renting a motorbike just outside Ninh Binh station.

However, if it’s your first visit to Ninh Binh and you only have one day, you might want to book a day tour with a guide so that the transportation and itinerary are taken care of.

Check out highly rated day tours of Ninh Binh from Hanoi >

Either way, I recommend prioritizing the boat tour at Trang An (more on that soon).

Best time to visit Ninh Binh

The temperature was perfect in March and there was almost no rain. During our April visit, it got hot (over 90 Fahrenheit).

Of course, if you’ve seen photos of Ninh Binh, you’ll know that it’s almost always overcast . It’s very rare to escape the grey skies!

Our homestay host said tourists rarely come in May because it’s way too hot (they also burn the rice fields at that time), nor in September because of heavy rains. The cold months are December and January – be sure to pack a coat if you visit in winter.

Early Spring is pretty ideal.

In terms of costs from high season to low season, we haven’t seen too much fluctuation in homestay prices or train tickets. Since this is a popular destination for Vietnamese tourists, you may notice that crowds increase a bit on the weekends .

How to get to Ninh Binh

You can get to Ninh Binh by train, bus, or van. Hanoi to Ninh Binh is about 2.5 hours either way. The Hanoi Ninh Binh price is pretty similar by train or bus as well.

The most direct, private (and more expensive) way is to hire a private vehicle driver.

Compare Hanoi to Ninh Binh transport prices on BookAway >

Ninh Binh train station is also on the north-south Vietnam train route, so you can stop off if you’re traveling from Central or South Vietnam on your way up to Hanoi .

There are bus companies, vans, and tours that will also take to Ninh Binh from Ha Long Bay (or vise versa). You can find those on BookAway as well.

We also heard there’s a bus from Ninh Binh to Sapa, which is more convenient than going through Hanoi if that’s also on your itinerary. However, Sapa to Ninh Binh is still a full day’s journey!

Our train tickets from Ga Hanoi to Ninh Binh cost about $7 each way in second class, and we booked train tickets online a few weeks in advance.

Getting around Ninh Binh

You’ll find taxis waiting just outside the train station. “Malinh” taxis are green with the name on the car, and you can confirm before getting in that the driver will use the meter. Our taxi ride to the village of Xuân Áng Ngoại, about 20 minutes, was less than $5.

The turquoise Xanh SM electric vehicle taxis are also in Ninh Binh now. Grab rideshare app may be hit or miss in this area.

There’s a friendly couple renting scooters and motorcycles at Viet Dung , less than a block from the station entrance. They were very responsive by WhatsApp. We paid about $4 to rent for the day, plus a few dollars in gas.

Almost any homestay or hotel will be able to help you rent a bicycle or scooter, if it’s not already included with your stay.

Where to Stay in Ninh Binh

Staying in the town of Ninh Binh itself is really not ideal, so we recommend booking a place in one of the villages around Tam Coc or Trang An .

From there, you can get around by bicycle or a motorbike rental.

Our homestay was nice, however, there was a big construction project next door and quite a bit more smoking in common areas than we’d prefer.

Upon returning in 2024, we scoped out some other great accommodation options for you in Ninh Binh that are highly rated and wrote all about it…

Sightseeing in Ninh Binh by Bicycle

A number of locals told us that the best way to get around Ninh Binh is by motorbike. And it’s true.

The main attractions are fairly spread out, and the small roads aren’t always paved.

However, it is definitely manageable by bicycle – even the one-speed cruisers that most homestays provide for free.

You might choose to travel by bicycle for a couple reasons:

– It’s cheaper than renting a motorbike or car – You get more exercise – You can enjoy the landscape as you travel a bit more slowly

At our homestay, bicycles were provided for free and motorbike rentals were 150,000d (about $6.60) per day. For the reasons listed above, we used bicycles to get to attractions and restaurants most of the time.

We rented an automatic motorbike for 1 of the 7 days when we wanted to get out to Bai Dinh (a 14km drive), and we knew we’d get plenty of exercise walking around the temple complex.

Even if your accommodations don’t provide bicycles, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a bike rental for a couple dollars per day in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc.

Of course, motorbike rentals are still a relatively good deal, too. The choice is yours!

Ninh Binh Bike Map

ninh binh tourist map

The bike routes on our map are accessible to both motorbikes and bicycles.

Note that Google Maps is not completely updated for this area and several roads are missing.

It’s also not easy to tell by Google Maps whether a road is paved or not, nor how big of a road it actually is. Some paved roads become gravel or dirt paths very suddenly. However, it’s usually easy to walk your bike for a short portion and continue on.

The interactive bike map includes:

– bike parking locations and costs for the main ninh binh attractions – photos, descriptions, and tips for most sights – a few restaurant recommendations around ninh binh – bike routes for tam coc, bich dong, trang an, bai dinh, and hoa lu, top things to do: ninh binh itinerary ideas.

Here, we prioritize the top things to do in Ninh Binh to help you plan your itinerary on a budget.

We recommend the Trang An boat tour as the first “must do” – and then adding to your itinerary from the top of this list, depending on how much time you have.

1. Trang An Boat Tour in Ninh Binh

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Tam Coc vs. Trang An boat tours

The reviews are pretty much unanimous: the Trang An boat tour is more pleasant and a better value than the one in Tam Coc.

That said, both have changed significantly since our first visit. Both sites now have separate ticket booths with standardized tour packages.

Of course, both are beautiful, and if for some reason you can’t get out to Trang An, then by all means do the boat tour in Tam Coc. Just know that there may be several points where you’ll be pushed to shop or give a tip.

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

The busy starting and ending point for boat tours in Tam Coc

Tam Coc combines an open air electric car ticket as well as a boat ride. The total cost is 250,000d per adult (plus the tip you may be asked for at the end). The ticket booth is on the main road, not next to the boat launch as it used to be.

Foreigners go two people to a boat, locals can go 4 to a boat.

The boat ride route takes you through three caves. The rowers often use their feet to row – which is unique!

map of Tam Coc boat route

Trang An has several different boat routes, so you can choose from 1-4 hour options. We did nine caves and three stops at hidden temples. It took about 3 hours.

You purchase your Trang An boat ride ticket for 250,000d per adult at a new complex across the street from the boat launch. There is motorbike and bicycle parking behind the ticket booth.

A combo ticket includes an open air electric car ride and entrance to the recently built Khe Coc site, which based on reviews, doesn’t seem worth the extra $2.

After purchasing your ticket, follow the underground walkway (they don’t let you cross the main road) to the boat launch where you can select your route.

Boats have a minimum of 4 passengers, so if you’re a solo or a couple, they will match you with other guests. It’s an organized system. When we went, no one was pushing us to shop or to tip.

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

About to enter our first cave – we couldn’t believe we’d actually be going  under the mountain !

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

We started around 8:30am and though there were a number of boats in the water at the start and at a couple of the temple stops, our boat was mostly alone the farther out we got.

If it’s possible for you to visit on a weekday , it will be less crowded than a weekend. (Also, make sure you’re not going on a Vietnamese or Buddhist holiday – we saw thousands of people there at 8am one Sunday because of a festival.)

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

We were happy with our choice to do the Trang An boat tour.

Although we had time to do more boat tours on our first visit, we opted instead to bike around different parts of the river where the boats go in Tam Coc (these are on our map).

A Third Boat Tour Option in Ninh Binh: Bến Thạch Bích Boat Ride Launch

Some Ninh Binh day tour packages will include Thạch Bích, but few independent travelers know about this third boat tour route. It is between the Tam Coc boat launch and Bich Dong Pagoda.

This lesser-known boat ride alternative is about an 80 minute ride with local women paddling mostly by foot.

As of early 2024, prices were not set and operations were half-hazard compared to the bigger Tam Coc and Trang An areas. Without standardization, there seems to be more upselling with souvenirs en route and pressure to tip. (This is what Tam Coc used to be like!)

We negotiated 400k VND (includes 2 people) then were pushed to give 100k in tip.

It’s a peaceful out-and-back ride in a scenic valley and does go under two impressive caves at the far end. Our driver had a bag of souvenirs on the boat, but didn’t pursue it when we said we weren’t interested.

While the experience is not as good as Trang An , it could be a more convenient option if you’re near Bich Dong Pagoda.

2. Biking around Tam Coc and visiting the Bich Dong Pagoda

These two sights are nearby so it’s ideal to do them back to back.

As mentioned before, there are a few points around Tam Coc where you can see the row boats on tour. There’s a path that encircles the lake in Tam Coc where the boat rides start.

From there, wander past the Tam Coc Nature Lodge to find a riverside cemetery as well as the Đền Thái Vi temple amidst rice fields and karsts.

ninh binh tourist map

To reach Bich Dong Pagoda, you’ll need to get back to the main road.

Paid bicycle and motorbike parking is available where the road ends, though you can probably find a place to park for free down the road. We paid 10k per bicycle (less than 50 cents US).

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Entry to the temple is free and the main entrance is across a little bridge and through the gate. There are a few small temples and hidden worship areas in the caves to explore.

Be ready to climb some stairs!

To get to the valley behind the temple, you would continue straight through the bike parking area, walk around the square pond and follow the stone steps up and over. (Both walking routes are included on our interactive Ninh Binh map – sign up for free below.)

3. Mua Cave Climb

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Mua Cave Ecolodge is not far from Tam Coc, across the rice fields. Entrance costs 100,000d (around $4) and despite the name, it’s not really about the caves.

The real draw here is the 500-step journey to a couple panoramic viewpoints .

By Vietnam standards, the entrance price is a bit steep. If you enjoy a good panoramic view, the weather is good, and you don’t mind stair stepping, then this may be worth it for you.

We enjoyed the work out, and were very impressed by the views. You can’t really get a vantage point like this anywhere else.

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Be aware that parking attendants (with whistles and official looking hats) will try to stop you and get you to pay for parking on the road to Hang Mua. But parking is included with your entrance fee, so just continue on through the gate and park next to the ticket booth.

To get to the caves and the hike, walk through the nicely landscaped ecolodge grounds. There is a restaurant on site as well as a few open air cafes (mostly serving bottled drinks).

About half way up the stone steps, you can choose to go up the left or the right tower. We recommend doing both if you have the energy.

There’s also a short valley path that starts near this point, next to the little cafe/shop.

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Back on the ground, tiger cave is immediately next to the stairs. Mua Cave is further down a path along the karst. The cave leads you out to the other side of the karst in no time. The cave also has a side tunnel going to a spring.

We were told that you could walk through the pool another 50 meters pretty easily if you took off your shoes, but there aren’t any lights back there.

4. Bai Dinh Temple

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, bicycle routes

Bái Đính Temple Spiritual and Cultural Complex is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Vietnam . The grounds cover 27 hectares (about 67 acres), so it takes a minimum of 2 or 3 hours to explore by foot.

There is no charge to enter , but a ride via electric shuttle to or from the complex is 30,000d each way. Motorbike parking is 15,000d and you get an official ticket.

With the amount of walking and stair climbing required to see this place, we recommend taking the shuttle one way to the far end of the complex. That way, you can walk through the entire thing and end up close to the parking.

Directions for walking into the temple complex independently are unclear (probably deliberately), so we’ve included waypoints and walking instructions on our interactive map.

The original, ancient temple of Bai Dinh is located in a series of small caves in the mountainside. Now, there are many other structures and the complex continues to be developed.

You’ll see impressive Buddhist temples with Vietnamese architecture, a new 12-story pagoda, beautiful pools and gardens, long corridors with stone statues of Buddhist deities, and views over the lakes and karsts below.

What to do in Ninh Binh on a budget, motorbike routes

Guides are available for hire here. Also, certain areas have a number of photographers selling print-on-demand portraits who may compete for your business.

The signs posted to “keep silent” and prevent picture taking in the temples are not often heeded. Still, we recommend following the guidelines to respect the space and especially to wear appropriate clothing (no short shorts/skirts and cover shoulders).

Since Bai Dinh is a bit far from the other sights in Ninh Binh and it takes a while to walk around, make sure to budget enough time for the visit.

If temples are not of interest to you, it would be understandable to prioritize other sights over this one.

5. Hoa Lu or Bird Valley

If you have extra time in Ninh Binh after visiting the four sights we’ve already recommended, you may wish to visit one or both of these places.

ninh binh tourist map

Hoa Lư was the first capitol in Vietnam, way back in the 10th and 11th centuries. It’s a short detour off the road between Trang An and Bai Dinh.

We don’t rank Hoa Lu very high on this list because there isn’t much remaining of the ancient capitol. And the few attractions are not well signed for English speakers.

While it’s historically significant, it’s hard to get much out of the experience without a guided tour – something you’d need to pre-book as part of a package.

If you do choose to stop by for a quick look, beware that a parking attendant near the entrance will tell you that bicycles and motorbikes are not allowed inside. This is either not true or not enforced.

Either way, you should be able to park along the road for free rather than the paid parking (10k).

Bird Valley  is typically visited by local tourists more than foreigners. Reviews of this ecopark are mixed and it’s a ways beyond Bich Dong, so we chose not to go.

There are some 40 species of birds in the park, but we gather you have to pay for a boat tour on top of the entrance fee to get anywhere near them.

Suggested 3 Day Ninh Binh Itinerary by Bike

The following itinerary is for travelers who like to be active. It should be a piece of cake for pro cyclists, but the average fit adult will be moderately challenged and tired by the end of each day.

Day One: Tam Coc Bike Route Lunch in Tam Coc Bich Dong Pagoda Bike Route Explore Bich Dong Pagoda on foot

Day Two: Trang An Bike Route Morning boat tour at Trang An Lunch at Trang An complex or Mua Caves area Mua Cave Hike

Day Three: Bai Dinh Cycling Route Lunch at Linh Trang Cafe, Bai Dinh Explore Bai Dinh Temple complex (e-shuttle to far end and walk back)

Where to Eat in Ninh Binh

We are a bit biased about the great food in Hoi An , and we found that the restaurants in Ninh Binh didn’t have the same quality or value.

The good news is, there are plenty of eateries around pretty much every attraction. Often, there’s not much to distinguish one from the other.

The restaurants with English menus are geared toward tourists – individual dishes range from $2 and up (a bit more than you’ll find in other parts of Vietnam) but serving sizes tend to be pretty substantial.

None really stand out in terms of taste, but some family-run places are very friendly and will even give free treats to their patrons. (P.S. If you’re used to ordering phở, it may not have that tasty broth you’re expecting – in the Ninh Binh region it’s prepared quite bland.)

You’ll see other big restaurants that seem to be empty most of the time, until a big tour group or local party comes in. These tend to serve family-style meals, which get pricy if you don’t eat with a group.

Dishes featuring goat meat are the local specialty. These restaurants may not have English menus.

ninh binh tourist map

We have a couple restaurant recommendations near Bai Dinh and Tam Coc on our map.

The one restaurant that really stands out, though, is in the town of Ninh Binh itself: Trung Tuyết .

We made the trek by bicycle and motorbike several times because it was the only place we found with outstanding food and customer service. These folks know how to make happy customers.

Try their com chay – it’s a local specialty and no one else does the sauce like them. It comes with rice that’s fried into a sheet, which you break up into pieces and drench with the soup. The soup can be made with beef, chicken, or just vegetable but it tastes a lot like the gravy in chicken pot pie.

Portions at this place are huge, so even the “small” orders can be shared by two people. Their fresh spring rolls are also some of the best we’ve ever had.

We just went to Ninh Binh and I wish I read your blog before!! Noted that I will always seek your website before planning any trip 😆 We loved it though! We stayed at a relatively new homestay, Tam Coc Scenery Homestay, and would recommend it. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable, affordable (about $8 USD for a private room) and best of all, the family is so friendly. We thought about taking the train, but ended up taking a public bus from the southern bus terminal in Hanoi since it’s faster and the buses go frequently… we waited no time to hop on a bus both ways. I’m sure the train is more scenic though!

It’s a really really good guide on a budget I ever read through.

Such a beautiful part of the world! Thanks for taking me back! I also recommend Cuc Phuong National Park there! ?
