Muscat: Throughout 2023, Oman ports, including Sultan Qaboos Port, Salalah Port, Sohar Port, Khasab Port, Shinas Port, and Suwaiq Port, showcased their effectiveness by handling over 93.2 million tons of cargo, marking a 1.5 per cent increase from the previous year’s handling. This growth encompassed general goods, liquid products, and bulk commodities, underlining the ports’ significance in facilitating trade and commerce.

Moreover, the number of berthed ships at Oman ports rose to 11,005 in 2023, a 4.3 per cent increase from 2022. This uptick in maritime traffic further solidified the ports’ reputation as key players in the region’s shipping and logistics landscape.

A notable highlight was the surge in cruise ship activity at Sultan Qaboos Port, Salalah Port, and Khasab Port. These ports witnessed a remarkable increase in cruise ship arrivals, welcoming 229 ships with over 599,000 passengers in 2023, compared to just 87 ships carrying 205,000 passengers in 2022. This substantial growth, exceeding 190 per cent, reflects Oman’s successful efforts in attracting major cruise operators and enhancing its tourism appeal.

Cruise Port Guide Muscat – Oman: docked at the Port of Sultan Qaboos

In Muscat cruise ships usually dock at Port of Sultan Qaboos, berth 4 and 5. This is the official port of Muscat that lies in front of Muttrah. There is no tourist information and no maps available on the dock. There is a terminal building which is not always open. The cruise dock is wheelchair accessible.

Walking in the port is prohibited and therefore there is a shuttle bus provided by the ship. This shuttle bus usually goes to the port gate and to the Mutrah souk. It is wise not to get off at the port gates, because in general you will only find taxis waiting for you there and nothing else. If you choose to be dropped off at the Mutrah souk you are in one of the three most interesting areas in the city.

Muscat is located between mountains and sea. It compromises a long string of suburbs, spread over 60 km. Muscat is sometimes referred to as the “3 cities”. This is referring to these 3 area’s: – Mutrah. This is where the cruise shuttle bus will drop you off. It is about 2 km / 1,2 mile from the port. Here you’ll find the famous Muscat corniche, the Mutrah souk, the Bait Al Baranda Museum and the Incense burner. – Ruwi. This neighbourhood is about 6 km / 3,5 miles from your cruise port. You could consider this as “downtown” Muscat. – Old Muscat. About 7 km / 4,5 miles from your cruise port. This is definitely one area not to miss on a visit to Muscat. Amongst others you’ll find Al Jalali fort, Al Mirani fort, Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace and Bait Al Zubair museum here.

Taxi fare for tours through Muscat area at the rate of R.O. 10 per hours for the first 3 hours and for extra time to be R.O. 7 per hour. The minibus fare is double than the Saloon Taxi if the passengers are more than 4 person.

One way rides can be quite expensive in Oman. For example one way from the port to another neighbourhood is probably 15 US dollar or from the port to the Grand Mosque will probable be around 40 US dollar or 17 RO. To the left is a photo of a sign at the port with the taxi prices on them. This will give you a good idea of what it should costs, but in real life you notice that if rare to get the price as you’ll find it on the sign. Expect that you pay about 15 dollars for a 15 minute taxi drive. Prices like 15 dollars one way per taxi to the Qurum area and 40 dollars one way per taxi to the Grand Mosque are reasonable.

Hop on hop off bus

There is a hop on hop off bus available in Muscat. This red double bus will be waiting for you at the Mutrah Corniche, often at the same spot as where the cruise shuttle bus will drop you. Sometimes these busses also come onto the pier, but it depends on the kind of arrangements your cruise line has made for them. The Hop on Hop off bus is pretty expensive compared to other places, but Muscat is spread out and therefore Hop on Hop off is already a nice choice just for practical reasons. Oman ports handle more than 93 million tonnes of cargoes in 2023

Omani ports also witnessed another increase in the number of berthed ships in 2023.

MUSCAT: The Omani ports highlighted their activities and efficiency during the year 2023 as one of the most important ports in the region. In 2023, represented by Port Sultan Qaboos, Salalah Port, Sohar Port, Khasab Port, Shinas Port and Suwaiq Port, handled more than 93.2 million tonnes compared to about 91.8 million tonnes handled in 2022, achieving an increase in the volume of general, liquid, and bulk cargoes by 1.5 per cent in 2023.

Omani ports also witnessed another increase in the number of berthed ships in 2023. These ports received about 11,005 ships in 2023 compared to 10,553 ships in 2022, with an increase of 4.3 per cent.

Regarding cruise ships, the ports of Sultan Qaboos, Salalah, and Khasab saw a significant increase in the number of passengers through cruise ships. This achievement reflects the efforts made by the government in collaboration with its tourism partners to increase the movement of cruise ships to Oman.

The tourism sector is one of the tourism styles that contribute to attracting tourists from all over the world. The indicators recorded the arrival of 229 cruise ships carrying more than 599,000 passengers in 2023 compared to around 87 cruise ships carrying over 205,000 tourists in 2022, with an increase of over 190 per cent in the number of passengers.

In reflection of the role played by ports in maintaining the smooth flow of goods and leading the economic development trend and diversifying sources of income, many efforts have been made over the years to maintain the operational and logistical performance of Omani ports and increase their capacity.

In this regard, several projects were completed in some ports during 2023. An agreement was signed for the management, operation, and rehabilitation of Shinas Port with the Quad Marine Solutions Company on August 9, 2023. The company took over the management and operation of the port starting from November 2023. During the first year, the company will provide detailed studies and a new masterplan for the port, with negotiations for a long-term management, operation, and development agreement to take place in the second year.

For the establishment of new ports contributing to strengthening the logistics sector of the Sultanate of Oman, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology received the Dhalkut Fish Port and offered it for investment through public tenders for local and international private sectors to manage, operate, and develop it for commercial activation. During the first quarter of 2023, the ministry also tendered a mining pier project in Manji for investment through a public tender after coordination with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

In order to activate business activities at Port Sultan Qaboos and make use of existing infrastructure in line with future directions in the port's waterfront project, the ministry launched four bids to provide some maritime services at the port, and negotiations are currently ongoing with qualified companies.

To keep up with the growing demand within existing ports and make these ports competitive environments attractive to major global shipping lines, work is ongoing to expand the facilities of these ports and develop the infrastructure. Salalah Port Services Company is working on upgrading the infrastructure of the container terminal in addition to providing new container handling equipment. This upgrade will increase the capacity of the container terminal and the new equipment will enhance Salalah Port's reception and handling of the latest generation of container ships, with the project expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025.

To implement strategic plans aimed at enhancing the logistics sector sustainably and improving the administrative and operational efficiency of Omani ports, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology continues to work in cooperation with port operators and all strategic partners to develop these ports, increase their capacity, and consequently increase the volume of exports and imports through maritime outlets along the Omani coast. — ONA

Oman Visa For Cruise Ship Passengers

There are a lot of people that visit the website to know if they are eligible for Oman Visa For Cruise Ship Passengers. One common group of people that I visit the website for this purpose is cruise ship passengers. Cruise ship passengers may also have some other questions related to cruises, such as: How can you get off a cruise ship into Antarctica? Why its better to go on cruises when you retire? What is the best cruise area in the world?

Many people do not realize how simple it is to visit Oman. What some also don’t realize is that this country can be visited by Cruise Ship Passengers

Passengers on cruise ships (DSS) are required to have visas on entry to Oman, except where cruise ships have diplomatic status or stay for over 14 days in a calendar year to be exempt from visa requirement. Oman has two ports of entry that cruise ship passengers may visit without a visa; Muscat and Salalah.

oman cruise ship passengers

Landing in the beautiful country Oman for some of your most exciting vacation is a dream come true. However, besides packing your luggage, you need to think about visas and the documents needed to provide you with the entry into Oman. You will want to be sure that you can give yourself a chance visit countries outside of the port you’re traveling from without being turned away at the border because your travel visa is only good for cruise-ship use.

Centuries ago, the Omani people formed their own nation. This civilization has always been a leader in the Arab world. These days, the neighboring country is gaining popularity with cruise ship passengers from around the world who wish to visit Oman.

Cruise ship vacationers have the option to explore this beautiful country while visiting its unique historical and cultural sites. But before visiting Oman travelers should have an Oman visa to pass through immigration when they arrive in. Cruise ship passengers can get a free visitors visa that allows you to stay in the UAE for 14 days.

Do Cruise Ship Passengers Need Visas

he government has decided to allow tourists aboard ships anchoring at the country’s ports for less than 24 hours to disembark without a visa. Col. Said bin Hilal Al Kindi, Director General of Passports and Residences at the Royal Oman Police, which is also in charge of immigration and customs in the Sultanate, said the decision is applicable to Sultan Qaboos Port in Muscat as well as all other legally approved sea ports in the country. He clarified that the local agent will have to submit a letter to his department, specifying the number of passengers expected to disembark and other details. Also, the agent will have to own responsibility for the return of passengers to the ship by a fixed time. Passengers travelling by ships which stay here for more than 24 hours are cleared by the authorities concerned at the ship with minimum formalities for disembarkation, to ensure their stay is as comfortable as possible. The move is part of the campaign to promote tourism. “We want to remove travel hindrances as far as possible,” said Al Kindi.

WHO ALL WILL BE GRANTED THIS VISA?

This visa is granted to only the cruise ship passengers and crew members after the request for the application of a visa by the agent of the ship. If the request is done by a local sponsor then the passenger and crew members are allowed to stay in Oman for a period of one month.

SUBTYPES OF CRUISE VISA:

Still, wondering as to which type of visa will be the best for your trip?

Then there are 3 subtypes you’d want to know about before planning your trip:

1.  32A VISA:

This visa is granted to passengers of the cruise ship and is valid for 48 hours of stay. This means that the tourists arriving at the port of Oman with this type of visa can stay in Oman for about 2 days.

One of the things that a tourist should keep in mind while travelling to Oman with this visa is that just having a valid visa won’t get you inside the country. The Royal Oman Police at the port entry will be responsible to let you in the country. The tourist can enter and leave Oman only on the same cruise ship.

VALIDITY OF VISA:

This visa will be valid for 6 months and that means you can enter the country with this visa during the 6 month time period from the date of issuance.

DOES THE VISA ALLOW MULTIPLE ENTRIES?

The 48 hours cruise ship visa is only applicable for a single entry.

There are no fees to be paid which means that this visa is available free of cost.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION:

Submission of application is to be done at the seaport in Oman.

CAN THIS VISA BE EXTENDED?

This 32A type of visa cannot be extended and if there are any overstay then there will be a fine applicable of OMR 10 per day.

APPLICANT AND SPONSOR:

The applicant must be a cruise ship passenger visiting Oman only for tourism purposes and the sponsor must be an Oman shipping agent.

IMPORTANT SITES FOR APPLICATION OF VISA:

You can apply for the visa via an online method as well. You can apply online at  www.omanievisa.com .

2. 32B VISA:

This type of visa has the same conditions as stated above. The only difference in this type of visa will be that the length of stay will be for 48 hours to 10 days in Oman. This type of visa is applicable to all the passengers and crew members of the cruise ship.

3. 32C VISA:

This visa also follows all of the conditions stated above. The difference in this type of visa will be that the stay period for the tourists visiting Oman will be for a month or 30 days from the entry into the country.

CRUISE SHIP PASSENGER AND CREW MEMBERS TRANSIT VISA:

This visa is granted for those passengers and crew members on arrival to Oman. This will be a landing card which will be valid for not more than 24 hours. And if any of the members wish to stay for a period longer than 4 hours need to apply for a type of visa from the above-mentioned ones. Any of the citizens of Bangladesh and Israel are not allowed to enter Oman through the port.

DOCUMENTATION NEEDED FOR CRUISE:

While there are some of the documents you need to look for before planning your cruise trip, here are some of the common travel documentation that is required:

  • A valid passport which is valid for more than 6 months
  • A visa of any of the subtypes which are mentioned above
  • A valid ID card which states the nationality of the tourist

Getting to know the subtypes of the visa and the requirements for the visa must have given an idea of which type of visa will be the best for your visit to Oman. You can now enjoy a nice time while you are here in Oman and take a cruise journey which will give you a memory to fill in your diary!

Dramatic video captured the moment a pregnant woman suffering medical complications was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship.

Footage posted by the US Coast Guard shows a rescuer being lowered onto the Disney Fantasy on Monday in the Atlantic Ocean, about 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

The 35-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, is then seen being raised by a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk chopper to be flown to a hospital.

The Disney cruise ship where the pregnant passenger was airlifted from.

“Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” the agency said.

The Coast Guard also deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Miami to rendezvous with the cruise ship.

Officials seen on the deck of thy ship.

“Once on scene, the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew deployed their rescue swimmer aboard the cruise ship, who prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft,” the Coast Guard said.

The woman was transported to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she was treated at Centro Medico Hospital, officials said.

“Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required,” Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens said in a statement. “This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.”

Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader, said his crew was “glad everything came together to help this passenger.

“The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference,” he said.

It was unclear if the woman’s emergency was related to her pregnancy.

The Post has reached out to Disney Cruise Line for comment.

According to the company’s frequently asked questions , women must be no more than 23 weeks pregnant in order to set sail. If they enter the 24th week of pregnancy during the sailing, “they will be refused passage due to safety concerns.”

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

  • The Disney Cruise Line ship was located 180 miles from land when the Coast Guard responded to the call

A pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy was airlifted from the ship after experiencing health complications on April 15.

The Disney Cruise Line vessel was 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean when the passenger “required a higher level of medical care ashore,” according to an April 16 press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A video of the incident shows the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew executing a medevac in order to transport the patient safely to land by helicopter.

In the harrowing clip, an aircrew member gets lowered by rope onto the ship and at least seven crew members are seen carrying the woman on a stretcher. Per the release, the aircrew’s rescue swimmer then “prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft.”

The patient was met by local emergency medical responders at the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was then transported to the local Centro Medico Hospital.

According to the release, Coast Guard members first got the call that there was a medical emergency aboard the ship on the morning of Monday, April 15.

“Watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” according to the release.

Malaysians do need a visa to enter Oman. However, along with citizens of many other countries, Malaysians can apply online for an unsponsored tourist visa for ten (10) days or thirty (30) days at a cost of OMR5 and OMR20 respectively. At the moment they may also get a visa on arrival but there would be an extra OMR1 administration fee.

There have been numerous threads on the subject of the Oman/ Dubai Common Visa and, as far as I’m aware, nobody has managed to get a free Oman visa despite showing Oman Immigration officials their own webpage which says that this visa exists and despite them, apparently, meeting all the criteria.
