Spiritual Trips in Peru with Mallku

pachamama tours peru

In his current book “Inka Power Places, Solar Initiations” he reveals important secrets of the Initiation Knowledge of the Amauta Sages, which were expressed in their Temples, Palaces and Cities as testimony for all time.

Modern men and women in every continent and culture are turning their attention to the ancient lore and wisdom of their lands. Some are driven by a desperate feeling that time is running out. Too many species are disappearing, and too many people are losing their ability to live together in harmony and strength. People are slowly realizing that “Man did not weave the web of life, he is but a thread within it.”

Mallku in “The Awakening of the Puma” brings us convincing physical evidence of a time in Andean history when indigenous ancestors of Peru lived and celebrated such a conscious connection and interdependency with the Earth and Cosmos. With their foresight and compassion, these sages left a traceable path for future generations.

Following this section, Mallku leads us on an enlightening pilgrimage from sacred sundials and dimensional portals, to healing springs and celestial mountains. The physical journey through these highly charged power places is a fascinating second step in this exploration.

The land and people alone are awe-inspiring, but with Mallku’s explanation, the past and present come alive with future continuity and promise.

For those acquainted with shamanic teachings and practices of native cultures, many parts of this handbook will sound familiar, but with a distinctive Andean emphasis, including the Spirit animals most prominent in the Andean world: the Puma, the Kondor, the Serpent, the Eagle, the Hummingbird, and the Jaguar. The initiate assimilates the abilities of these spirit animals, giving him superhuman intuition, dexterity, vision, and the ability to create and transform energy. The demands placed on the individual who chooses to accept the challenge and develop these latent abilities are more extensive than most anticipate, but the rewards are impressive and far-reaching.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Mallku’s thesis is that the doors to these new dimensions of awareness have recently been opened for us, because of the beginning of a new Pachakuti, or cosmic cycle. Andean history is divided into segments of a thousand years, with a transformational era after every five hundred years. In 1992 we recently passed one of these historical transitions.

The legendary Inka Pachakuti was responsible for designing the Andean city of Cusco in the physical shape of a Puma. This Puma center of the Inkan empire is progressively illuminated by each sunrise, symbolizing the gradual awakening of the transcendent development of awareness in human beings. Andean history was written by the invaders of a land which, after 500 years of domination, is now returning to a new epoch of balance and independence. Spiritual and psychic doors closed for centuries are now opening, inviting and propelling us to new heights of responsibility and connection to ourselves, our fellow men and our planet.

There is much more for us to rediscover about the foresight and vision of our ancestors. We are now in the fifth year of the tenth Pachakuti, and the mission of this new epoch is related to but different from that of the last cycle. Tolerance and respect between cultures and religions, combined with the capacity to agree and disagree, is a major evolutionary step destined for the new Pachakuti. The constant and destructive fight for domination between people of limited vision, who cling to and worship one manifestation of Divinity at the expense of another, will be replaced by recognition of the many faces of the Creator God.

Acceptance of old and new modes of worship, prompted by compassion and appreciation for the complexity of the Divine God and Man will be another welcome development. Transformation from the goal of political and physical expansion of the Inkan empire, to the cross-cultural spiritual and psychological awakening, is a refreshing and noble transition we are now privileged to experience and witness. As the Indian chief, an illuminated Inkan leader prophesied in the transitional period of the last Pachakuti, “I will go away, but when I return I will be millions.” This dissolution of barriers between man and the priesthood is what we are now beginning to encounter and develop.

Mallku promises that other facts of Peru’s intriguing cosmology and history will be explored in subsequent books on the healing practices and mysticism of the Amazon jungle tribes and the shamans of the coastal areas of Peru. The ceremonial use of medicinal and psychotropic plants, and a spiritual healing tradition thousands of years old, are important parts of Peru’s heritage. The multi-dimensional and rich cosmology of the Peruvian spiritual leaders, whether they be Aymara, Quechua or Amazonian, is able to strengthen and restore the strained and torn web of our modern lives. The wisdom and foresight of our ancestors will enrich and preserve our irreplaceable, intricate planet, and teach us new and forgotten secrets about ourselves and our universe.

MORE ABOUT MALLKU

Mallku has been studying for many years the power places of the Andes. The Andean architects, were not only the builders of incredible structures, but also the masters of the power lines (ley-lines as known in western geomancy) existing in the world. He has made and uncovered significant discoveries about these geo-magnetic forces. His lectures and ceremonies demonstrate the importance of astronomical phenomena in the design and placement of these ancient temples. The Ancients understood and worked with these geo-magnetic forces, so that their temples and palaces would became power places to grow in spiritual essences and experiment with the high energies of Pachamama and Wiraqocha. Cusco city is an example of this conscious style of architecture, where the suns pattern is extensively mapped to the equinoxes and solstices, the design of the city reflects this in every aspect. In the last 20 years of studies, Mallku has discovered some of the most important astronomical phenomena that are still visible at many of these ‘power places’. He describes these ancient Andean buildings, the expression of an advanced “Feng Shui” technology, and the Andean architects, as masters of the spiritual path.

I had an experience of a lifetime! I had always dreamed of going to the Andes and when the opportunity came into my awareness, it was the right time! The ceremonies and education I experienced with Mallku’s guidance were quite exceptional. The choice of sites was varied and rare. I dare say… perfect. I am sure that we got a view of Peru that few will ever have. I truly felt at home in Peru, I found the land alive with spirit and i was able to ground myself in a way that I have never before or since. My connection to the spirit of the land will last a lifetime. I fell in love with Peru. I would go back in a heartbeat! Sincerely,

******************************************************************

I still cannot believe that I am not on my way, towards some wonderful places in Peru… My heart still sings. There are no words to thank you. But you know that. I am sure that many people said to you the same: no words…

Already manifested changes in may way of thinking, I try to adapt…but no waaaay! The adaptation, as a “coming-back-to-how-I-was” is impossible! I have a huuuge energy, growing and growing, and the meditation with “Pachamama” makes this feeling even stronger…

I am ready to start new activities, I started to write and I am sharing with many people, on forums, this great feeling of being loved… of being nourished my Mama… By Pachamama… Being in this infinite ocean of love…

I was blessed to be with you and I hope to have this chance again.

There are some pictures I got with the Kondor. It was absolutely magnificent! And I am sure you remember what Luiza said, that she could not feel… Here is the picture with the coca leafs in their hands… I send it to her, as a “proof” of what it was there, a beautiful light…

May all your ways be cleared and shining of light. You both are in a beautiful space of love, in my heart, where you are WELCOME!  (I will keep your words, dear Mallku, as they are in my heart forever)

****************************************************************

Dear Mallku,

Andy and I wanted to thank you once again for the magical tour through the Andean power places and incredible archaeoastromony you have discovered. It was a wonderful trip and very enlightening for all of us.

The intention that I set for our trip was exactly what I received. Validation and confirmation of my continuing expansion of consciousness. I thank you for your patience and also your guidance in helping us all to see with clarity what it is that we came to learn, know, and integrate within ourselves. I am very proud of my husband and father for participating with an open heart on our journey. I know they will be forever changed.

I had many favorite moments, but perhaps my most dear memory will be of the four us having an enlightening and honest discussion over food and wine. I appreciate your honesty and also very grounded perspective on so many things.

I wish you all the best with your restaurant, business, and new spiritual center. We wish we could have met your beautiful wife but perhaps another time. 😉

If you ever need anything, please keep in touch. We’ll be moving to the USA in October of this year and will be near the San Francisco Bay area in California.

I will send you some pictures from our trip.

“Pachamama Journeys, the Path of Beauty”,  is joined to a “great purpose” of life, the essence of this is communion with all beings of good will on this Earth. We feel that states of harmony on the planet Earth are the result of an arduous and constant lifetime of communication with our inner world. Life and its different states (material and spiritual) is for human being to experience, and it is in these areas of life that the “Sacred Journeys” sisterhood, honoring our Mother, “Pachamama”, offers natural and spiritual experiences that are appropriate for this search for our inner riches.

When speaking of the spiritual world and its effect in the terrestrial dimension many people try to understand it only from a philosophically rational stance which is a point of view that is appropriate to the Western culture; let us not forget that the energy in this land of Peru is that of “Pachamama” and “Wiraqocha” which implies a harmonious
development in all areas of life. We cannot propose a solid basis for a new age if we continue to follow practices that are appropriate to the time of the caved-wellers; we cannot continue to support a religious yoke that threatens the balanced development of all the Children of this planet.

The woman of the new age is she who would always protect Life and her paths will always be under the protection of the Earth Mother, our “Pachamama”. Groups of people and different associations raise the flag of ecology against a background of politics and power, justifying with their example the continued destruction of many parts of our land and the biodiversity of our surroundings. Harmony in our lives ought to show itself in every moment, if we are insincere there will come a moment when we receive messages from nature that tell us we are following a dangerous path that sooner or later will threaten our wellbeing, manifesting as illness, pain and suffering, all typical of this earthly dimension; we are not perfect and to err is human, but to go against the current when we know better is to seek to harm ourselves.

The Children of the Sun in these Lands understood that they were Pachamama’s Children and they knew that what happened to her also happened to her Children; accordingly discipline, individual and social, served in ancient times to insure that each being might have a worthy and balanced life. In our time we have a variety of paths and many choices and from the choices Pachamama offers our sisterhood has chosen to serve our nations in ways we believe we have found to be correct:

First we try to help people through the means of natural food to reach a physical balance of health which will doubtless result in mental development and a parallel spiritual experience; along with this offering of natural food, we provide the services of our esoteric library which offers, through selected works covering various topics,
evidence of the spiritual path. Of course the literature is only a guideline for spiritual development since it will be through direct personal experience that each individual of good will has the opportunity to experience her own spiritual growth. To help others
achieve this, whenever possible we offer journeys throughout this sacred land of the Andes, always invoking the “Pachamama” as the Being of Substance and “Wiraqocha” as the Being of Illumination and the guide along our way.

Our plans do not stop there; we are working to build, not long from now, the “House of the Pilgrim” which will be the model of a community which will unite all the conditions of this time and rescue the millennial traditions of diverse peoples of the world; of course the Andean traditions will be the “hosts” since we are in the Land of “Pachamama”
and “Wiraqocha”. We are aware of a new rebirth of the Children of the Moon and the Sun and the coming of the new age will show a path of light and love to the great race of humanity.

We celebrate life in beautiful ceremonies, we honor Pachamama and the divine being. Join us in this magical path to release and work for a better world. We share experiences into the shamanic path and the Mother Earth is our guide and protector. We want the harmonious union between the male and female energies, come and join our magical journeys into the Andes.

LOVE DIVINE

In the warmest gaze lies always endless emotions, to which we surrender our self. Lips find each other and form part of the music where tongues perform motions in accordance with the intensity of the beats of the heart. A wave of love brings on desire, limitless desire. It makes us rise and reach the summit of a high mountain. The body trembles. They seek each other more and more. Garments torn in the yearning of living love. In every point a freshness of feeling. The willingness to always be. Many caresses, touching, scents feeding the desire to give oneself. Continuous movements are a part of this dance in which the dancer seeks his partner not allowing her to escape. Another world is entered. Past harmonies and melodies do not invade the moment. Breathing reaches a highest level. We sail upon the same sea, in the same vessel and with the same intention. Bodies in unison of hunger to begin anew. The insatiable thirst that never ends. Permanence within the wild passion that joins two beings. Brief movements. Bodies tremble craving with desire to feel yet more ecstasy. Reach orgasm in delirium. Press together frenzied and kiss flooded in love. They are back in the world of always, which at some point will perish. Fire love. Passion that beckons. Unconscious want, to give myself completely. Sensation of life. Wishing you in a world where we are both in one. Surrounded in love. I and you, you and I.

Sensations mix and mingle, like clouds in the sky. One song obscures another, within a difficult concurrence of volumes. An intenseness of taste, reappears stronger, and deletes what is past, ”that” which grounds and premise is lacking. Already, a fault, a precious “lack” appears. A want –this one touching and moving. The need of finding, moments such as that one never forgotten. At the bottom of it all we are together and both together masters of the same gaze, that carries meaning with it. Emotions, doubts, desires. We form part of a whole body, which makes us wise
and belonging to a word, many times difficult to voice, but that feeds upon our blood
and our soul. It brings us closer to our true “I,” further purifying that which is the purest in the human existence: THE LOVE. ALWAYS STRIVING, NEVER ENDING.

Let us allow Pachamama and the Spirit of Wiraqocha to bless our lives, let us open our hearts and expand their light to the hearts of those who think that love is not part of their lives. Let us ask for the protection and guidance of the Guardians of the Universe, who are our own guides, for the light to illuminate our world and peace to be manifest in all the creatures of the Earth. Let us always wish for and invoke that freedom radiates our Pachamama, for the Universal Mother to protect us, shelter us, and with affection show us the beauties of the life. Let us feel that her heart beats to the rhythm of the heart of the world and the Universe.

Life turns into more life. We are the pulsation of the energies. We are the Universal Love.

Thankful for existing, thankful for Life. Thankful for the nourishment that we receive.

Thankful for loving us as your children. Thankful for your protection. Thankful for every moment.

Good journey of Light. And remember to care for your heart.

In the silence, we leave behind the words. That we no longer need. In silence we can speak with a gaze. In silence we speak with the eyes of the heart.

Pachamama Month in Peru

Home » Pachamama Month in Peru

Chaman

Peru celebrates the Earth Month or Pachamama Month in the high Andean communities since August 1st. The Andes are characterized by its deep cultural and folk legacy from the Inca and pre-Inca cultures. In their festivals, customs and traditions that continues since Inca times. Many people have a close bond with our Mother Earth (Pachamama in Quechua). For that reason, every August each family in Peru pays a tribute to the Mother Earth to request health,  money and living peacefully with their neighborhoods and social enviromentes in work and friends. Coz all natural resources are provide by Morther Earth and we always be grateful with her to lead us live over her lands.  Pachamama is our Mother Nature and she is everywhere, but we can find special places that the inhabitants consider sacred.

What is celebrated at Pachamama Month in Peru?

The majority of high Andean communities still have a deep dependence and connection with agriculture and that’s why August is the month in which people has more tribute to do with the land and living peacefully with their enviroment.

Who celebrates the Pachamama Month in Peru?

All Peru celebrates the ritual independently in their houses. Because it’s a common custom that came from our ancient culture that is so beneficial to all people in Peru . Into the ritual the peruvian ppl buy the best products to give thanks and the ingredients that we need to thank are: the coca leaf, an animal fetus (preferably an Andean animal), some coins, lliqlla (typical blanket with Inca motifs), alcoholic beverages (mostly wine or beer), cigarettes and food.

What does Pachamama mean?

To understand the meaning of the Quechua word “ Pachamama ” we must first break it down into its two parts: at one hand, we have  ‘Pacha’ which means earth, world, universe, time and at the second side we have ‘Mama’ which means Mother. Both words melted creates the meaning “Morther Word”.

Everything that exists on our planet especially in the Andean world has life. Nothing is inert in the Andean world, the stars, the universe, the moon and mainly the Sun have life. When there is a ceremony regardless everyone attends. The community members gather for dance, eat, drink and celebrate.

The Meaning of Pachamama

Pachamama Meaning

Pachamama Meaning In Andean Culture

A scarf weaved in Taquile

James Bustamante is Native to New York but born to Peruvian parents. He has been traveling throughout Latin America since early 2003 and finally made his home in Peru. James has made his way by eating and traveling through almost every country in Central and South America.

One of Peru’s most ancient and revered customs is the offering to Pachamama, also spelled Pacha Mama. This ritual remains a vital part of the Peruvian spiritual practice in the Andes mountains. This ritual is a significant cultural experience and one of the most fascinating activities for visitors to Peru.

To enhance your understanding and appreciation of this revered female Andean deity, we have compiled a concise guide in collaboration with the travel specialists at Journey Machu Picchu. This guide aims to familiarize you with the various rituals you might encounter near Peru’s major attractions, ensuring your visit is enlightening and unforgettable.

Table of Contents

What is The Meaning of The Word Pachamama?

Pachamama meaming

The term ‘Pachamama’ holds a significant place in the hearts and minds of the Peruvian people. But what exactly does this term mean?  In the era of the Incas, Quechua was the lingua franca. From this ancient language comes the word Pachamama, with ‘Pacha’ translating to ‘universe,’ ‘world,’ or more commonly, ‘earth,’ and ‘Mama’ meaning ‘Mother.’ Therefore, Pachamama can be understood as ‘Mother Earth,’ a nurturing, life-giving entity central to the Andean worldview.

Pachamama is more than a mere mythological figure; she represents the interconnectedness of all living things and the interchange between humans and the natural world. Pachamama is revered and respected in the Andean belief system, with rituals and offerings to ensure harmony and balance within the environment.

As a travel professional, I recommend that those choosing a Peru travel package immerse themselves in the local culture by learning about Pachamama. This understanding not only enriches the travel experience but also fosters a deeper connection with the breathtaking landscapes you will encounter, from the majestic Andes to the verdant Amazon rainforest. Experiencing Peru through the lens of Pachamama adds spiritual and cultural depth to your journey, allowing for a more meaningful and memorable exploration.

Understanding Pachamama also provides context to many of the customs, festivals, and daily practices you will observe in Peru. It’s a concept that permeates many aspects of Peruvian life, influencing art, agriculture, and community practices. Engaging with this aspect of Peruvian culture offers a unique perspective on how ancient traditions continue influencing modern life in Peru.

An Introduction to The Pachamama

The Religion of the Incas

Pachamama, a revered ancient female deity, holds a special place in the hearts of the Andean and Amazonian people of Peru and other parts of South America as well. According to local scholars, she embodies “Mother Earth,” providing her children sustenance, support, and protection. In current times, particularly in the Andes, she is honored with offerings during planting and harvesting seasons, believed to inhabit mountains, and associated with causing earthquakes and influencing fertility.

For the Incas, before the Spanish arrival, Pachamama was more than just Mother Earth; she symbolized the essence of nature and the life cycle it encompasses. This deity was central to the fertility of the people, the growth and harvesting of crops, and represented the earth’s generosity and abundance. She was revered for using her bountiful produce to safeguard her worshippers, linking her closely to agricultural productivity.

Today, the veneration of Pachamama remains vibrant and relevant despite the evolution of religious practices and the growing influence of Catholicism.

The belief in this deity continues to be a significant aspect of the cultural fabric, especially in Andean cities like Cusco. The worship and adoration of Pachamama persist, reflecting a deep-rooted respect for the environment and the ancestral traditions that have shaped these communities. This enduring reverence highlights the ongoing cultural synthesis and the resilience of ancient beliefs in the modern world.

Pachamana and The Incas

Inti Raymi Celebration

While the  Sun god Inti  was revered as the principal deity in Inca cosmology, the importance of other gods, particularly the Andean Mother Earth, escalated over time, especially after the Spanish conquest. It’s crucial to remember that the Inca civilization was an amalgamation of various pre-Inca cultures, human settlements, and small villages scattered across Tawantinsuyo before the 13th century. These distinct groups had their deities and unique worship practices.

The Incas absorbed several of these gods through conquests and unions into their pantheon. For example, the Sun god, initially worshipped by the Tiahuanaco pre-Inca culture, and the supreme deity Viracocha, revered as the creator by the Caral culture and subsequently by the Chavin, Wari, and Tiahuanaco cultures, were adopted into the  Inca religion . However, the gradual overshadowing of Viracocha by the more tangible and daily presence of the Sun remains a historical enigma.

Despite these evolutions in worship, embodying the female essence of nature, the Andean Mother Earth retained her significance throughout and beyond the Incan period. She was revered as the provider of life, food, animals, and water and was linked to various atmospheric and geological phenomena, playing a pivotal role in Peru’s rich biodiversity. Her importance was further underscored by the fact that the Inca economy was predominantly agricultural, making her veneration crucial for the prosperity and sustenance of their culture.

The Andean Mother Earth was believed to be fertilized by the rain, and the Sun God and was seen as the source of bountiful harvests. This relationship highlights the intricate and harmonious balance perceived by the Incas between different natural elements and their deities. Her continued reverence, surviving the shifts brought by the Incas and later the Spanish conquest, is a testament to her enduring legacy as a fundamental and life-giving force in the Andean worldview.

The Belief of Duality and The Incas

Inti The Inca Sun God

In the Inca’s way of life, the principle of duality stood as a cornerstone of their worldview. This concept was deeply ingrained in their understanding of the universe, where every entity or element had a complementary counterpart, reflecting a balance essential to their belief system. This duality extended to their practices of tribute and sacrifice, where offerings typically involved pairs, such as two animals, one male and one female, to appease and garner favor from the gods. Being favored by the gods meant a good harvest, which meant food security for the season.

Each deity in the Inca pantheon had its counterpart, exemplifying this concept of duality. The Andean Mother Earth, or Pachamama, was paired with Inti, the Sun god, signifying the interdependence between the Earth and the Sun. Similarly, water and fire were considered complementary forces, as were the Kay Pacha (the earthly realm) and Hanna Pacha (the heavenly realm). These pairings were not merely symbolic representations but were integral to the Inca understanding of balance and harmony in the natural world.

It is crucial to note that this concept of duality in Inca belief should not be mistaken for the dichotomy of good and evil, as understood in many other cultures. The Incas perceived their deities as complex beings capable of benevolence and wrath. In their worldview, the qualities of mercy and punishment, or good and evil, were not mutually exclusive but could coexist within a single deity. This perspective highlights the nuanced and sophisticated nature of Inca theology, where gods were seen as multifaceted entities embodying the diverse aspects of existence and the natural world.

This duality principle is a fascinating aspect of Inca culture, offering insight into their perception of the universe and their place within it. It underscores the complexity and depth of their religious beliefs, where harmony and balance were paramount, and every element of the natural world was interconnected and interdependent.

Reciprocity and The Incas

Inca origins, inca legends

The Incas, renowned for their sophisticated culture and beliefs, practiced a unique form of reciprocity in their offerings, or ‘Challa’ in Quechua, to the Andean Pachamama. This reciprocal relationship between the people and the divine was a central tenet of their worldview, exemplifying a deep connection with the natural and spiritual realms.

The offerings made to Pachamama were rich and symbolic, comprising packages filled with an array of natural produce. These included dry coca leaves, fresh fruits, corn, and Andean cereals such as Kiwicha and Quinoa. These items were not chosen randomly; they were the products the goddess bestowed upon them, embodying the principle of “you give me, and I give you.” This ritual was a tangible expression of gratitude and balance between humans and the earth, a cycle of giving and receiving that underscored the harmony the Incas sought to maintain with nature.

These offerings were carefully placed in specific sacred locations called ‘Huacas.’ Huacas were not ordinary places; they were caves, mountains, or rocks, often resembling animals or holding other significant forms imbued with spiritual significance. By burying these offerings in the Huacas, the Andean people symbolically returned to Pachamama what she had provided them, especially during the harvest times.

This practice of making offerings to Pachamama was more than a mere ritual; it was a fundamental aspect of Inca life, reflecting a profound understanding and respect for the interconnectedness of all things. It served as a way of expressing gratitude, ensuring balance, and maintaining a symbiotic relationship between humanity and the natural world. The Incas acknowledged their dependence on the earth’s bounty through this ritual. They sought to ensure the continued fertility and productivity of the land, allowing them to reap the fruits of their labor and sustain their communities.

The Andean Pachamama Ceremony

Pachamama ceremony AI image

There is a ceremony that takes place and is orchestrated by a traditional shaman. It is called the Pachamama ritual or Pachamama ceremony, which is used to call for good luck in future endeavors. The intricate ritual is detailed below.

Step 1 La Llamada (The Call)

On the eve of the first of August, a date traditionally set aside for offerings to the Andean Mother Earth, a distinctive ritual called “la llamada” takes place in Peru, marking the preparatory phase for the next day’s ceremonies. This ritual involves burning incense and smoke throughout farms, homes, and orchards, serving a dual purpose: to cleanse these spaces of evil spirits and attract positive energy.

Uniquely, this ritual is not limited to spiritual leaders but can be performed by anyone, usually the homeowner or land caretaker, emphasizing its communal and inclusive nature. “La llamada” is not just a ritual act; it symbolizes the deep-seated connection between the physical and spiritual realms, reflecting the community’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a harmonious balance with the natural and spiritual world. For visitors, witnessing “la llamada” offers an insightful window into Peruvian life’s rich cultural and spiritual fabric.

Step 2 Preparing Offerings

At midday, a pivotal moment in the traditional Andean ritual unfolds as Shamans, the esteemed Andean priests, arrive to craft the offerings for Pachamama. These offerings, rich in symbolism and cultural significance, typically consist of:

  • coca leaves
  • an assortment of fruits
  • portions of food prepared for the day
  •  sweets like candies and chocolate bars

Each element is carefully sprinkled with wine and chicha de Jora, a type of Andean beer made from fermented corn, a beverage that traces its roots back to the times of the Incas.

As the Shaman meticulously prepares the offering, the family gathers around, creating a space of communal reverence and gratitude. During this ceremony, the Shaman thanks the Andean Mother Earth, invoking her blessings for protection and fertility and realizing the family’s intentions and aspirations. This often includes prayers for abundant harvests in the coming season for farming families.

Integral to the ritual is the active participation of each family member. They, too, offer their gratitude to Mother Earth, each making a personal wish while blowing on three coca leaves they have chosen. These leaves, known as ‘Quintu’ in Quechua, are then handed to the Shaman to be included in the offering.

Blowing on the coca leaves and incorporating them into the offering symbolizes a personal connection and individual contributions to the collective prayer, strengthening the bond between the family, the Shaman, and the Pachamama. The ritual, rich in symbolism and communal participation, highlights the deep spiritual connection and respect for nature central to Andean culture.

Step 3 Rituals and Singing

After preparing the offering, the Shaman begins a solitary journey to the nearest Huaca or, a remote, spiritually significant location. This place, often a natural formation like a cave or mountain, is revered in Andean spirituality. Upon arrival, the Shaman begins a sacred process, digging a pit as a gesture of returning the offerings to the earth.

Amidst chanting ritual songs in Quechua and the fragrance of burning incense, the ceremony connects the physical to the spiritual. Chicha de Jora, or wine consumption by the Shaman, is ceremonial and a form of communion with the spiritual realm, enhancing the connection with the Apus, the revered mountain gods.

The ritual culminates with the careful burial of the offering, a profound act of faith and respect towards nature, encapsulating the principles of reciprocity and reverence that are foundational to Andean beliefs. This act fosters a connection with the divine and reaffirms the community’s bond with their natural surroundings and the ancient traditions passed down through generations.

Step 4 Eating With The Family

In the afternoon, the family or whoever asks for the ritual will share lunch with the Shaman as a celebration. This marks the end of the Pachamama ceremony.

The idea of the Pachamama, or Mother Earth as it would be known in English, is still very much alive in Andean cultures as well as with several Amazon rainforest tribes. Many ethnic groups in the highlands still pay tribute to Inti, the Pachamama, and several other deities of the Andes. Pachamama Offering and Other Inca Mystical Rituals in Cusco!

Aug 5, 2022

Pachamama Offering and Other Inca Mystical Rituals in Cusco!

In Quechua (the ancient Inca language), Pachamama means Mother Earth . She was and is worshiped across Cusco and the Andean world, for thousands of years. Pachamama is the giver of food, water, a female natural energy which provides everything humans need for survival. This is why she was highly and constantly revered since the dawn of Peruvian civilizations.

Andean and Inca societies always had shamans who specialize in the mystical rituals to Pachamama and others, like the reading of coca leaves. These mystical rituals still nowadays are a part of Andean culture, with both local and foreign people doing them. TOUR IN PERU also has several packages for visitors who want to take the chance of doing these ceremonies with genuine Inca lineage shamans, while enjoying the other wonders of our region.

Next we are going to see the main Inca/Andean mystical rituals visitors can do while staying in our amazing Cusco region, so full of history and mysticism.

  • Offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth): this is one of the traditional mystical rituals in Cusco and throughout the Andean region! The idea is to venerate the female spirit of Earth, the one that provides fertile soil, crops, water and all things essential for our survival. In time, this mystical ritual has evolved into a ceremony in which people also ask for all things material, like house, car, money and similars. The ceremony is done by a genuine shaman, one who has gone to the sacred mountain Ausangate and has been given the energy to heal and do any mystical rituals. The shaman will start putting figurines of all things wished (for example, food, money, house, car, etc) on a special cloth, praying and chanting over them, blessing the offering to Pachamama, spraying it with flowery water, burning holy wood. Finally, the offering to Pachamama is wrapped and the shaman will take it and bury it next to one sacred mountain. August 1st is Pachamama day in Peru and other Andean countries; moreover, it is a holy month in Cusco, so this is the ideal month to come here if you also want to do these Inca mystical rituals. Actually, many people here in Cusco go see a shaman to do this ceremony every August.
  • Reading of Coca Leaves: the coca leaf is central in Cusco culture, where it has nothing to do with the drug derived from it. It has been used as an energizer for Andean people who always had to face demanding work and weather. Also, it was a trade currency; for example, the Inca kings used large amounts of it to reward loyal people. The reading of coca leaves is one of mystical rituals also done by genuine shamans; in it, he connects with the spiritual energies of Pachamama to give the consultant the best advice for the present and the future, in all areas like family, financial, relationships, etc. The shaman throws the leaves on a cloth, in the middle of a special setting, with statues of the Andean sacred animals: llama, the cougar and the snake.

  • Cleansing of Negative Energies: this is different among mystical rituals; here, shamans will have the person standing up (previously, they will give wise advice on how to avoid creating negativity in life) and sing, pray upon him, additionally using flowery water, power rods, rue plants, condor feather, surrounded by statues of Andean power animals, burning holy wood. The aim is to purify the person from sin and bad karmas, using the subtle energies of Pachamama and all nature. It can be done at special spots in Cusco.
  • Flowering Bath: this is one more of mystical rituals, widely done in Cusco, by locals and foreigners alike. The shamans will pray, sing, use flowery water, power rods, holy woods, surrounded by Andean power animals, so the person will experience blossoming in all areas of life. Additionally, the shamans perform songs and dances with typical instruments. Finally, the person is given some special gifts which are actually talismans for good luck, to attract the blessings of Pachamama, of the subtle natural energies.
  • Inca Wedding: this has become one of top mystical rituals in Cusco, for both nationals and foreigners. Partners will wear ancient Inca costumes, food and drinks will be just like in the old times of the empire, there is music with folklore instruments, dancing, the ceremony can even last the entire day or be a half-day event. The setting usually is an energetic, mystical place in the Cusco region, like the ruins of Pisac or the Machu Picchu area. In the Inca Wedding, the union is blessed by Pachamama (female energy of nature) and by the mountains (male energy of nature), the marriage is blessed by all subtle energies of nature. It must be a covenant for the rest of their lives, sealed by an Inca heritage shaman.

These Pachamama and other mystical rituals in Cusco do not require special preparations, except for a quiet, relaxed state of mind the day of the ceremony; they don’t require special behaviors after either, except of course living a more spiritual, wiser life.

Don’t forget August is the holy month here in the Cusco region; it’s usually the best time of the year for doing karmic, spiritual cleansing, rebirth, and reconnecting with Pachamama. You can surely book with TOUR IN PERU these ceremonies in addition to our regular tours or you can even travel down here just for your spiritual, karmic renascence via these mystical rituals.

How to visit Pachacamac, the largest archaeological site in Lima

pachamama tours peru

It is one of the most important archaeological sites on the Peruvian coast. With an extension of more than 465 hectares, it began to be built at the beginning of our era and its use was uninterrupted for about 1500 years until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in 1533. Here we can find evidence of four different cultures: Lima, Wari . Ychma and Inca; being the Ychmas, who carried out most of the constructions that are seen today in the place, highlighting their pyramids with ramps. It has an excellent site museum and a huge number of ancient structures including temples, palaces, pyramids, aqueducts, cemeteries, squares, streets, etc. It was the abode of one of the most feared divinities of ancient Peru known as Pachacamac, the one who had the power to move the earth and cause earthquakes, whose idol was found in the place and is exhibited in the museum.

If you want to make a special tour and access areas where almost no one enters, request the so-called "special visit" at the ticket office. On this tour you will see the most important street in Pachacamac, as well as one of the 16 pyramids with a ramp and several other places. For this it is mandatory to hire one of the guides of the place which has a cost apart from the payment of the entrance ticket and the tour is completely on foot.

Where is Pachacamac located?

Pachacamac is an archaeological site located on the right bank of the Lurín River, District of the same name.

On one side of the ruins, we can see the Pacific Ocean, and on the other, the green fields that are part of the Lima Polo Club, a place where the rich and famous of Peruvian entertainment meet.

Thus, the site is located at kilometer 31.5 of the Antigua Carretera Panamericana Sur (the old Pan-American highway) in the Lurín Valley, Lima.

Pachacamac was a god belonging to Inca mythology, whose worship was rendered from his site built on the coast at the same time as Machu Picchu in the mountains.

The word Pachacamac means "Soul of the earth, the one who animates the world", he was a divinity for the communities.

History of Pachacamac

Long before the arrival of the Incas, Pachacamac was inhabited by the Ichma culture, who built 16 of the complex's pyramids. Later, the Huari culture was responsible for rebuilding the place, to use it as an administrative center.

It should be noted that the ancients settled in this area for more than 3,000 years due to the ease of using the water and the land.

Thus, the construction of the Pachacamac sanctuary began around the year 200 AD. and each culture that inhabited it later added new temples. The complex reached an area of just over 80 hectares.

When the Inca civilization finally arrived, they built a huge Temple of the Sun (30,000 square meters), as well as a house for young priestesses. Some pyramids were the homes of priests and nobles.

The complex was active for at least 1,300 years, until the arrival of the Spanish. Archaeologists began studying the site in the 1890s and found a large complex of adobe buildings that included temples, pyramids, plazas, and looted burial sites.

Finally, in 2012, 80 mummies were found, as well as jewelry and ceramic pieces, many of which are exhibited in the site Museum of the establishment.

Legend of Pachacamac

According to this legend, there was a beautiful woman, Cavillaca, who was wanted by the gods. As she was not fooled by any, the god Wiracocha became a bird and spread her seed on a fruit tree. She, by eating the fruit, became pregnant. No one knew who the father of the woman's daughter was, until the girl was asked to recognize her father, and she recognized the god Wiracocha.

The god, to go unnoticed, had dressed in rags, so the woman thought that a poor ragged man was the father of her daughter and she felt so upset that she went to the ocean to kill herself with the little girl. The god tried to stop her, revealing who she was, but she no longer wanted to know anything and when they got into the sea they ended up turned into stone due to her vanity.

Why visit the ruins of the Pachacamac sanctuary?

Although the surroundings of the Pachacamac ruins remind us that Lima is an arid city, the dusty streets near the sanctuary offer a stark contrast to the green and modern district of Miraflores.

However, Pachacamac is one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru, since in it we find 16 pyramids gathered. Its historical importance is due to the fact that it was the main sanctuary of the natives for more than 1300 years.

Historians and archaeologists have concluded that pilgrims from different areas came here asking for advice and omens from the oracle called Huaca.

In view of these qualities, visiting the pre-Inca ruins of Pachacamac is an essential stop for those who wish to live a much closer experience with the history and culture of Peru.

What can you see in Pachacamac?

Currently, the ruins of the Pachacamac sanctuary on the central coast contain more than 50 temples and other buildings, making it one of the largest complexes in the city of Lima.

The tour begins with a visit to the ceremonial area, where the Temple of the Sun, the Painted Temple and the Old Temple are located.

Then, you can visit the administrative area that is made up of 16 pyramids and structures such as the Plaza de los Peregrinos and the Taurichumpi and Acllawasi buildings.

According to archaeologists, the pyramids were, in fact, palaces for the rulers of Ichma and not a place of worship as had been thought for many years.

A third area is simpler in its architecture and was probably used to house the pilgrims who came to the area to worship the god Pacha Kamaq, ask for his advice, make all kinds of inquiries, and omens.

Pachacamac Site Museum

Inaugurated in 2016, the new Pachacamac Site Museum is one of the most emblematic buildings in Peru, as its construction simulates the ramps and walkways that surrounded the complex in ancient times, but with a modern touch.

Through it, visitors can tour the area and contemplate the enclosure with a better perspective.

The museum has around 277 objects on display for visitors, including the idol of Pachacamac, which was discovered in 1938 and is one of the most important archaeological finds on the continent.

Which sections are open to the public?

The Temple of the Sun: it was erected by the Incas to worship the Sun god. It is one of the most important and best preserved buildings.

The Old Temple: it is currently in ruins. It was built by the Lima culture before the Incas, and is the oldest construction on the site. It was built by small sun-dried adobe bricks.

The Temple of the Moon: it is also of Inca origin. It was restored by a Peruvian anthropologist. They also call it "Sanctuary of the Pachamama". The "chosen women" stayed there to serve the Inca or the Sun god.

The Painted Palace: belonged to the Huari culture. It is also known as the Temple of Pachacamac. It is a stepped pyramid of 100 x 50 meters, with a stone base and an upper structure of adobe bricks.

The pyramids: it is a set of 16 pyramids with ramps built by the Ichma culture. They are poorly preserved, so we can only appreciate their ruins.

The Plaza de los Peregrinos: it is a rectangular-shaped space next to the Temple of the Sun. It is believed that it was the antechamber for the pilgrims who were going to consult the oracle of Pachacamac.

Touring the Archaeological Complex of Pachacamac

The archaeological site of Pachacamac is practically a city where you will find well defined streets, squares, temples, palaces and structures built with adobe and stone.

In the highest area is the "Temple of the Sun"; From here you can fully observe the entire archaeological complex and you will also have an impressive view of the Lurín valley and the sea.

The complete tour on foot can be done in approximately 2 hours (6 km.). In this case, I recommend you wear comfortable shoes or trekking shoes, since the trail is totally dirt. In summer or on sunny days, bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen.

If you don't like to walk a lot, you also have the option of doing almost the entire route in your own car, except for the upper area where the temple of the sun is located.

Pachacamac by bicycle

Finally, if you want to get to know the Sanctuary in a different way, on weekends enjoy the "Bicitour Pachacamac" program, where you can take the bike tour accompanied by young people from the community who will show you the route; an original and fun way for the whole family. If you want to take your bicycle, do not forget to make a reservation beforehand, but if you do not have one, do not worry, the complex will give you one for free.

  • It is strictly forbidden to climb the walls or paint.
  • Do not collect or extract archaeological material from the site.
  • Due to the size of the place, cars and light vehicles are allowed to enter, but the tour can also be done on foot.
  • If you hire a taxi or other similar service to get to Pachacamac, it is recommended that you also reserve it for the return, since when you leave it will be difficult to find taxis. In front of the place there is a bus stop.
  • For school groups, it is recommended to coordinate your visit in advance.

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Pachamanca; the Peruvian Barbecue

Pachamanca; the Peruvian Barbecue

As of 2003 Pachamanca became a natural cultural heritage. This was to help preserve an ancient tradition that has existed for over 8 thousand years. A tradition that stemmed from the art of cooking using underground ovens. Ovens which can still be found in both the central part of the Andes and the coast. It’s a special dish that has been prepared by a number of communities in the Andes of Peru, including some parts of Ecuador.  You are unlikely to find this dish in restaurants and is only prepared during special occasions.

What is Pachamanca?

Pachamanca is a Quechua (indigenous language of Peru) word that directly translates to Pacha ¨earth¨ and Mancha ¨pot¨.  It’s a traditional mixed dish made from hot stones underground and it originates back to the Inca Empire. This type of cooking has had a major ceremonial significance to the people of Peru for many generations. It’s a ritual that’s regularly performed in the highland regions. The ritual is meant to give back to Pachamama (mother earth) by cooking the food in the earth (underground) and later when the food is ready, express gratitude for what Pachamama has provided.

How to prepare Pachamanca?

From my observation, the process is pretty strenuous and needs a bit of man power. Firstly, they heat the stones using firewood for approximately 4 hours. After the stones are deemed hot enough, all the ingredients are placed underground and covered with the scorching hot stones and topped with thatch and other items to preserve the heat. The cooking/baking process takes just over an hour. The moving of extremely hot stones is a task that needs skill, speed and endurance. The stones need to be moved on top of the food at great speeds. If you consider how hot these stones are, this task is certainly not for the faint hearted. However, this process has such spiritual significance to the people preparing it, the love and care that goes into it is pretty clear.

What type of ingredients should you expect in a Pachamanca?

First and foremost are the potatoes. As you might have heard, there are over 4000 varieties of potatoes in Peru and they tend to make up a majority of the local dishes. Typical potatoes used are the Yucca, the sweet potato, oka, papa peruanita and the common white potato among others. Other ingredients may include: pineapple, fava beans, plantains and a variety of meats like chicken, beef, pork, llama, alpaca, all depending on your taste and preference. Lastly, they add herbs and spices to taste.

The final product is absolutely delicious. You get the opportunity to participate in an ancient sacred ritual of the Incas. It also serves as a great reminder to us all to stay thankful for everything we have in our lives, small or big. For the Americans this would be like having Thanksgiving as many times a year as you feel is needed.

The Pachamama or Mother Earth is a divinity that represents nature for many Andean peoples of South America. The main ritual of Mother Earth is the “Challa”, payment or tribute. It can be done on the first Friday of any month, the best stage being the 1st of August or throughout the month. Just as it can be done on special occasions to ask the Pachamama for grace and good luck. This action includes a kind of ritual steps, which consist in the preparation of a special meal the night before and it is offered the next day in a special stone formation called the water hole or in the intake of an irrigation ditch where the main ritual is carried out. , in which the food prepared beforehand is offered together with drinks, mainly coca leaves and cigarettes.

En la actualidad el pago a la Pachamama se realiza también por familias cristianas y pachamamistas, teniendo así diferentes variaciones en la ofrenda y la comida.

Pachamama in the legends is a young and beautiful divinity that has its origin in the Collao or Altiplano area. Since mother earth has a singular beauty, everyone wanted to marry Pachamama, one of them is Wacon, with a malevolent character, however, she chooses Pachacamac; Wacon’s brother, considered the maker of the world and the heavens. By winning the duel for the love of Pachamama, Wacon is dissatisfied and begins to create droughts and floods in the terrestrial world for which he is expelled from heaven to the caves. After this event Pachamama and Pachacamac have twin sons called the Wilcas.

  • This practice is based on the delivery of offerings in payment to the land on the day of the Pachamama celebration. The residents make these offerings as a sign of gratitude, requests or favors by delivering a payment in advance, with material elements of natural origin called dispatches.
  • The most popular and that are normally delivered together are the coca leaf, banana, chicha, wine and certain seeds from the jungle with symbolic and magical power such as the huairuro. And among some rarer we have rice, starfish, cookies, sweets, mixture; among others.
  • The offices are different according to the place, territory or ecological floor. This ritual revitalizes the energy borrowed from the Pachamama during the agricultural year.
  • In the area of Puno and Bolivia the dispatches are sweeter.
  • In Cusco they are more linked to their ecological floor in the sacred valley with products such as corn, beans, etc.
  • The dispatches are also made with the purpose of multiplying their herds. The horticulturists or fruit plantations smoke coca and dry skin of the snakes with incense in vegetable and rocoto orchards as well as offer llama and vicuña fetuses, people believe that these offerings are better received.
  • Normally these offerings are made on August 1, but they are usually made throughout that month.
