Highly recommend My PandaTours! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing experience. Highly recommend!!! When we reached out to Alvin and his team at the last minute, they truly showcased their professionalism and dedication. They attentively listened to our requirements and crafted a completely customized tour plan that catered to our needs. Not only did they ensure a seamless experience, but they also provided exceptional care. Nie, our super helpful and caring guide, picked us up on time from your Chengdu hotel. Nie went above and beyond by assisting us in purchasing tickets, making sure we had snacks, and ensuring a hassle-free journey. We were fortunate to visit during autumn, when thetrees surrounding the base displayed vibrant and colorful hues, creating a picturesque backdrop for the adorable pandas. With fewer people around, we were able to thoroughly enjoy our time there. Alvin and his team truly deserve praise for their outstanding service and attention to details making the complete experience so memorable.

Adventure World Japan: Safari Tours and more - nowhere else in Japan can you get this close to pandas and other wildlife!

You can not only get up surprisingly close to pandas here, but also many other animals as well, and some you can even touch at the theme park Adventure World. This is no run-of-the-mill zoo . The scale is huge and you will be enthralled by all the animals awaiting you!

Most noticeable are the panda that have almost celebrity status in the animal world. There is not a person in Japan today who does not know about pandas. But even though it is a major animal attraction, as of 2016 there are only three places in Japan where you can see them. Among them, Adventure World in Shirahama -cho, Wakayama Prefecture boasts the largest number of giant pandas reared in Japan.

For animal lovers, this is a dream world come true

▲ Entrance to Adventure World

Adventure World is a theme park in which a zoo , an aquarium and an amusement park are integrated. Not only giant pandas but also many other animals live around the ~80 hectare (198 acre) grounds.

…A pig taking a nap. These are but a few of the 1,400 animals that you can see in Adventure World. Animal lovers will be thrilled as here they can see land, air, and water animals all in one place. Not only the size sets it apart from other zoos , but also its unique feature of allowing visitors to get up close to the animals.

▲This is how close you can get to some of them!

That might come as a surprise to many. Some might be alarmed by how close you can get to some of the animals, but in addition to being able to get so surprisingly close, there are many other experiences and attractions offered to allow you to come into contact with the animals.

▲ Rhinoceros feeding experience (200 yen each time, including tax)

“We are of course famous for our panda, but our other strong point is enabling visitors to get up close to the animals. The concept here is ‘people, animals, and nature coming together’ and being able to get close to the animals is essential to that. This of course presents challenges to everything being safely managed because Adventure World is so huge,” explains Mr. Mitsuhiro Takahama of the PR Department. The theme park is divided into a number of areas such as Safari World, Big Ocean, Animal Land, and a petting zone, and each offers a number of attractions and experiences. Here is a brief description of some of the attractions and experiences which we recommend.

Lots of ways to get around! In Safari World you can feel like an explorer

This is the Safari World area. It is the largest area in Adventure World. In it the animals are kept in conditions as closely similar to their natural habitats as possible.

▲From the Lion Terrace you can observe much of Safari World.

Shown in the photo is the Lion Terrace observation deck. Lions are lounging in the grassy area directly below. The broad expanse in the background is the Safari World area.It almost looks like a scene out of a Hollywood Jurassic Park movie. Observing Safari World from here is a prelude to the excitement that lies ahead. The carnivore and herbivore animals are in separate zones and there are various ways each can be explored.

▲The Kenya train goes all around Safari World and takes about 25 minutes, plus there is no charge.

In the herbivore zone you can rent bicycles and special carts and even walking is possible. You can actually walk up close to the animals. The efforts Adventure World make to enable visitors to get close to the animals is quite impressive. You can figure out the kind of tour combination that best suits your tastes and that is a good way to start.

African elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes! Enjoy the excitement of feeding them!

We boarded Mr. Takahama’s cart and he took us to the herbivore zone for our first experience.

panda tours to japan

“In this zone we have a number of different feeding experience attractions for the different animals. I think you will enjoy the experience of having these animals eat out of your hand,” he said. At that we arrived at the African elephant area. An African elephant extending its trunk in anticipation.

▲ African elephant feeding (200 yen each time, tax included)

Child cautiously giving a banana to the elephant. The elephant deftly retrieves the banana with its trunk and quickly gobbles it down.

panda tours to japan

Adults watch on in interest. It’s not very often that you’ll get an opportunity to see animals being fed up this close. There are many other types of animal feeding, too. Giraffes, white rhinoceroses, Malayan tapir...

▲Giraffe feeding (100 yen each time including tax). The giraffe will lick your hand with its warm tongue.

As for the animal feeding experience, the times vary according to the type of animal, so please keep that in mind. Plan your visit while looking at the Park Guide you receive when you enter the park .

All sorts of attractions! Lots of exciting things to see inside the park!

There are many other experiences and attractions vying for your attention in addition to the Safari World. Touch!

▲There are many kinds of small animals and birds in the Feeling Area. You can freely touch the animals that roam around the area.

Be soothed!

▲ Penguins parading down Flower Street. Penguin Parade

This large pool is called Big Ocean and the Marine Live dolphin show is held here three times a day.

panda tours to japan

The dolphins delight spectators with their elegant performances set to music. This is also a very popular attraction.

panda tours to japan

This theme park is a zoo , aquarium , and amusement park all in one. Hearing that you might think that each is quite small. Which would be only natural. But just the opposite is true. As you can see, there is much to see in each area. You could easily spend an entire day here and not tire of all there is to do.

Now what you have been waiting for! The thrill of seeing pandas up close!

This is what you have been waiting for. The stars of Adventure World are without a doubt the pandas. First, let’s begin with some trivia about pandas. Pandas (which are generally called Giant Pandas to distinguish them from Lesser Pandas) have not changed or evolved over the millenniums and as such are called “living fossils”. But pandas in the wild live only in deep forests in the mist-covered mountains of China, and because the pandas’ habits are elusive, until only recently they were considered to be “phantom animals”.

panda tours to japan

For various reasons, such as poaching, loss of habitat due to China’s economic growth, and worsening conditions regarding their food, their numbers sharply declined to a dangerously low level. The main reason for their near-extinction stems from the low survival rate of pandas bred in captivity. There are only two times in a year in which female panda can become impregnated. “If the male and female are not able to mate at one of those times, then that year there will be no baby pandas,” explains the person in charge of the pandas. That explains why there are so few in spite of their cute looks. So now pandas are protected by conservation groups and the Chinese government. Accordingly, Adventure World started Japan-China collaborative research in 1994 as a Japanese branch of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in China, in order to study the natural breeding of the giant panda. Two pandas were brought to Adventure World. From then until 2016 14 have been bred here. That is the most anywhere in the world outside of China. Adventure World is one of the few places in the world to have successfully bred and raised pandas.

panda tours to japan

There are two places in Adventure World where you can see pandas: the rare animal breeding center called Panda Love and the Center for Research on Breeding and Wildlife Conservation called the Breeding Center. In the indoor and outdoor exercise areas of these centers you can see a total of seven pandas.

▲Indoor panda area of Panda Love. It is crowded with park visitors throughout the day.

The pandas seem to spend all their time eating, sleeping, and lolling about. That would be a very lazy lifestyle by human standards.

panda tours to japan

Pandas spend half of the day eating. An adult panda will eat more than 10 kg of bamboo and bamboo grass in a single day. The closest carnivore relative of the panda is the bear. It seems that over time pandas evolved into herbivores and made bamboo their diet as it does not wither during the winter . According to the park staff, herbivores such as deer absorb 80 g. of nutrients from 100 g. of grass, but pandas absorb only 17 g. of nutrients from 100 g. of bamboo. “They eat constantly from the time they get up,” Mr. Takahama of PR explained.

panda tours to japan

That dispelled my perception of them being nonchalant about eating, but doing so out of necessity. They are able to break down the hard bamboo with their powerful jaws and teeth. So far we have mentioned a few of the attractions offered at Adventure World, but you are probably wondering “Aren’t there any panda experiences?” Naturally the answer to that is “Yes!” It’s called the Panda Love Tour (lasts about 50 minutes and costs 7,000 yen per person including tax). Participants on the Panda Love Tour are allowed to visit the backyard. This tour allows visitors to get closer to the panda than anywhere else. However, the tour is only held once a day and limited to only 15 participants so as not to adversely affect the physical condition of the pandas, thus making the Panda Love Tour a very rare experience. It is necessary to sign up in advance on the website, but you should do this well in advance because tours quickly become fully booked due to their popularity. Details of the tour are not allowed to be publically mentioned. But after much cajoling, Mr. Takahama reluctantly told us a little bit about it.

▲You are allowed to feed the panda on the Panda Love Tour.

Pandas are close relatives to the bear family. Even though they are not likely to attack a person, they are large and powerful. Keeping that in mind, being able to get this close to the pandas to feed them is quite remarkable. Only on the Panda Love Tour are you able to come this close to the very rare pandas. If you are interested in having this experience we urge you to check out the Panda Love Tour on the website.

At Adventure World you can see the animals up close and even touch some of them, so this is a place that the whole family can enjoy.

Opened in 1882, Ueno Zoo is Japan’s oldest zoo and home to over 2,00 animals and 400 species, including the giant pandas for which it is famous. Other attractions include the “Gorilla Woods”, “Tiger Forest”, a petting zoo with goats and sheep, and a Five-storied Pagoda which was part of the former Kaneiji Temple. The zoo also offers scheduled 45-minute guided tours twice per day where visitors can ask questions and better understand about the animals.

Visitors should note that due to the popularity of the panda viewing section the zoo issues numbered tickets to prevent overcrowding (previously these tickets were handed out on a lottery basis). Tickets are issued from 9:30am and, generally speaking, you’ll need to get to the zoo before 11am at the weekend to ensure you get a ticket for the one of the 30-minute viewing sessions. If you’re not one of the lucky early morning visitors, you still be able to see the adult panda in the outdoor viewing section which doesn’t require a ticket.

A safari park, zoo, aquarium and amusement park all in one

The 800 square kilometers that make up the giant wildlife theme park of Wakayama Adventure World is a fun destination for a family day out. With a safari park, zoo, aquarium, amusement park, and the famous Panda Land, there is enough to keep you entertained for the entire day.

  • The popular giant panda family
  • Observing animals roam freely in the safari zone
  • The dolphin and sea lion shows
  • Rollercoasters, go-karts and other fun-packed rides

How to Get There

Wakayama Adventure World is easily accessible by bus from Shirahama Station (20 minutes) and Nanki-Shirahama Airport (five minutes).

Quick Facts

The park's panda breeding center is the largest of its kind outside China

It is possible to feed a wide a variety of animals in the park including hippopotamuses and purple-tongued giraffes

Black and white magic

Superstar status is reserved for the family of five giant pandas who live in the park. The largest group of pandas at any of the zoos in Japan, the park has had considerable success with its breeding program. Visitors can see the family interacting in their enclosure. Daily exhibitions and Panda Love tours offer more information on these black and white celebrities.

Aquatic acrobatics

If you love marine animals, don't miss the popular dolphin and sea lion shows or the penguin and sea otter feeding.

panda tours to japan

A distinguishing feature of this park is that many of the animals roam the grounds freely. Wander around with flamingos, capybara, and other docile creatures. Be sure to bring a camera for a memorable selfie!

Super safari kart

Given the vast size of the park, tackling it all on foot can be a challenge. The park has come up with a speedy (and fun) solution by providing small golf carts for guests to buzz around in. They are available for use in the Safari World area and the only requirement is a valid Japanese or international driving license. If you don't have a license, enjoy exploring the park by foot, bus, train or bicycle.

The park's Play Zone is a fun-packed area that includes a go-kart track, multiple roller coasters and a Ferris wheel with fantastic views of the ocean.

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell while in Japan?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

  • Convenience store snack = YEN 200-500

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa

The Panda zoo garden

Ueno Zoo is a zoological garden located in the heart of the eponymous park, in Tokyo's Taito Ward. It is famous for its mascots: two giant panda bears coming from China. Opened in 1882, the oldest Japanese zoo consists of two parts and is home to several hundreds of animals species. The air monorail which crosses the zoo dates back to 1958.

After continuous days wandering between skyscrapers and malls’ districts, the desire can appear to take some fresh air and see something else for half a day. This goal in mind, Ueno Zoo appears as a perfect alternative, thanks to its pandas, stars of the neighborhood and represented everywhere as soon as you arrive at the train  🚅 station.

Located in the heart of Ueno Park , the zoo is the reference for a family outing in this area. And even if you are no longer a child, you can still be amazed in front of cute animals, by looking at the tiger’s big claws or the size of the gorilla's paws!

But the true celebrities here are Ri Ri and Shin Shin, the two giant pandas arrived in 2011. Maybe they will be three soon: it was everyone’s hope in Japan back then! The baby panda was finally born in June 2017. It was introduced to the public for the first time on December 19 the same year. The wait was so intense that a lottery was set up to determine those who would be able to meet it. In March 2018, 9,500 tickets were being sold everyday to come seeing baby Xiang Xiang and it is advised to arrive well before the morning opening hour to enjoy your visit ... and also to be patient.

Anyway, they are so loved that it is not surprising to have a long waiting line to see them, and mostly, the audience can't stop and stare at their enclosure: the line must keep moving. There are many people coming for them while they seem not to care at all. You might even just see a small black and white piece of fur in the background of the cage.

The zoo is fully integrated in Ueno Park , one of Tokyo 's most popular attractions, which can easily make you busy for hours as it is quite huge and get very crowded when the cherry blossom season reaches its peak. A lot of species are waiting for you there. Pandas of course, and also a tiger, a lion and its lionesses, a polar bear, gorillas and even penguins for the rarest, not to mention many other ones: more than 450 types of animals live there year-round. However, their environment is often criticized; with living space too narrow and a hardly bearable heat in summer .

China to lease giant panda couple to Spain

China plans to send a giant panda couple on lease to a zoo in Spain in an apparent bid to stabilize relations with European nations.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency says that the male and female giant pandas, both born in 2020, have been kept at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province.

Xinhua says the two are expected to leave Chengdu for a zoo in Spain's capital, Madrid, on Monday.

The research institution has posted a video on social media showing how the pandas have been living in Chengdu.

Another giant panda couple is set to be leased to a zoo in the US city of San Francisco next year.

The Chinese foreign ministry says it has been actively engaged in discussions on possible leases of the rare animal to multiple zoos in the United States and Austria.

China has leased giant pandas to other nations as a symbol of friendship and a tool to deepen bilateral relations in so-called "panda diplomacy."

In recent years, giant pandas in the US, Britain and Japan have returned to China.

Observers say China's worsening relations with those countries may have resulted in talks stalling on new leases for the pandas.

They say China is apparently aiming to use panda diplomacy to stabilize relations with the US and the European Union, which is trying to reduce its excess dependency on the Chinese economy.

San Francisco To Welcome Pandas and More Flights From China

Elizabeth Casolo , Skift

April 25th, 2024 at 3:07 PM EDT

San Francisco has experienced a rocky rebound since the pandemic, but promises of pandas and planes may uplift the city’s tourism.

Elizabeth Casolo

San Francisco is gearing up to greet more visitors from China, starting with a pair of pandas.

Mayor London Breed returned from China over the weekend, bringing news of how China intends to send pandas to the San Francisco Zoo as early as 2025. Travel and economic leaders also spoke with Chinese airlines about increasing flights to the city.

China’s tradition of panda diplomacy — bringing giant pandas to the country’s partners with the help of a conservation team — symbolizes more than just new zoo residents. The pandas could draw more U.S. visitors while representing appreciation for the city’s Chinese heritage.

San Francisco’s downtown has been struggling to attract visitors due to some travelers’ negative perception of the city’s safety . The city isn’t expected to go back to pre-pandemic tourism levels until next year .

Ushering in Tourism Growth

This isn’t the zoo’s first time hosting pandas. In 1985, the San Francisco Zoo hosted two orphaned giant pandas. The pair attracted three times the average number of zoo visitors in their first month, according to a spokesperson. Over one million visitors came for the pandas during their stint.

“The zoo is really beloved by our local community in San Francisco as well as our regional communities. It’s a beloved asset for the state of California,” said Cassandra Costello, San Francisco Travel’s chief policy and external affairs officer. She hopes “history will repeat itself” in terms of turnout for the upcoming panda arrival.

China is one of San Francisco’s largest markets for overseas visitors. According to Costello, Oxford Economics forecasts Chinese visitors will spend $1.1 billion this year in the San Francisco area, just down from the $1.2 billion they spent in 2019.

“This is a major signal about the strength of our relationship with China, which we know will in turn attract more Chinese visitors,” Costello said.

Now Boarding: More Chinese Flights

During the pandemic, the U.S. and China mutually agreed on limiting flights, but those restrictions are only slowly lifting now.

A spokesperson from San Francisco International Airport told Skift the airport hopes to increase flights with Chinese airlines. China flights have long relied on San Francisco as a gateway to the U.S.

Due to the Covid-era agreement, throughout most of 2023, only a dozen flights ran each week between China and the U.S. (yes, the entire U.S.). As of earlier this year, 50 flights operate. While San Francisco accommodates many of these flights, the airport is only halfway toward a full recovery of Chinese trips.

“Almost every other market has recovered back to pre-pandemic levels and then some,” the spokesperson said. “The exception, of course, is China, due in part because of these bilateral agreement restrictions. It’s not so much what the market will bear — it’s that this kind of limit has been placed on the number of these flights.”

During her press conference, Breed addressed how there is Chinese demand to visit San Francisco, but cost and visas could be barriers. The airport sees how increasing the supply of flights could lower the steep price tag, making the process for Chinese visitors a bit easier.

“Demand for air travel between China and the U.S. is very strong,” the spokesperson said. “But the supply is being artificially constrained by this bilateral agreement. If you relax that further, the more flights there are, the better it is for ticket prices, the better it is for customers.”

San Francisco currently hosts flights with a few Chinese carriers, but the airport wants to increase flights across those partners while expanding to more airlines. Other Chinese carriers include Shenzhen Airlines, China Airlines, and Hainan Airlines.

The U.S. airline industry expressed concern about competition, but the airport believes in the potential of more Chinese flights. The spokesperson said the airport estimates one daily flight from China could bring over $175 million in revenue to local economies and spur 1,200 jobs.

“Even just one additional flight has a really powerful effect to local economies,” he said.
