Two other notable additions to the food and beverage options at the park debut just in time for Opening Day 2019. The park opened an 120-seat Shake Shack and Pass and Stow , a new 24,500-square-foot area just beyond the third base gate featuring an outdoor beer garden and Goose Island bar; Foundry Pizza serving brick-oven pizza; a family-friendly sports pub; 44 televisions broadcasting the game and more.

Don’t Miss

At the The Yard , youngsters can play wiffle ball on a 70-foot-deep field, launch foam hotdogs at targets, ascend a 30-foot-tall climbing wall and more. Additionally, the 19-foot Liberty Bell that sat atop Veteran’s Stadium has been refurbished and installed at the third base gate, and fans can find tons of Phillies gear, including jerseys for every starting player, at the renovated New Era Phillies Team Store.

Citizens Bank Park is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the south end of the city. Opened in 2004, Citizens Bank Park is the home of the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball . The Park is located in the city’s sports complex, which also includes Lincoln Financial Field, the Wells Fargo Center and Xfinity Live!

Citizens Bank Park was built to replace Veterans Stadium, a multisport stadium that was the previous home of the Phillies from 1971 to 2003. Prior to Veterans Stadium, the Phillies played at Shibe Park, later known as Connie Mack Stadium.

Citizens Bank Park History

Requests for a new ballpark in Philadelphia began in 1999. The Phillies and Eagles made a request to replace Veterans Stadium with separate football and baseball stadiums. This desire was also shared by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers, who both played at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Veterans Park had become a dated stadium, and concerns about the park’s safety mounted after an incident where eight cadets were injured when a section of railing collapsed during the 1998 Army–Navy game. The Phillies originally had plans to build a ballpark downtown similar to Baltimore, Cincinnati and San Francisco. A site was announced near Chinatown, but after protests by neighboring residents, the Phillies agreed on a site by Lincoln Financial Field.

Citizens Bank Park opened in April 2004 with the first game taking place on April 12, 2004, a 4–1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The first Phillies win was on April 15, 2004, also against the Reds.

As a franchise with a rich history, the Phillies have a memorial wall called the Phillies Wall of Fame, located behind center field. This wall highlights some of the important teams and players in franchise history. The Wall of Fame is part of Ashburn Alley, which is named for former Phillie Richie Ashburn who spent 12 seasons (1948 to 1959) as a player, and was a broadcaster for the Phillies from 1963 until 1997. Ashburn Alley also includes other features like restaurants, open bullpens and the All-Star Walk.

Citizens Bank Park has hosted World Series games in three different seasons — 2008, 2009 and 2022. The Phillies won just one of those, the 2008 World Series.

As the home of the Phillies, Citizens Bank Park also hosts plenty of non-baseball events, including the 2012 NHL® Winter Classic and concerts. The first concert played at Citizens Bank Park was a two-night performance by Jimmy Buffett on August 25 and 27, 2005. Other artists who have played at the stadium include Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Paul McCartney.

Parking and Admission at Citizens Bank Park

When planning to attend a game at Citizens Bank Park, you will want to account for travel. If you plan to travel by car, there are plenty of parking options.  Car parking is $25, and oversized vehicle parking is $50. All parking is cashless, and Citizens Bank Park recommends pre-purchasing parking before visiting the venue. Lots have varying opening times. Please confirm parking lot opening times before purchasing.

Public transit options for Citizens Bank Park include the SEPTA Broad Street Line. NRG Station is the station located nearest to the stadium, and trains run every 8 to 10 minutes. One-way fare on the Broad Street Line is $2.50.

Citizens Bank Park rules are in place to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests at the stadium. Prohibited items are in accordance with MLB policy. Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch.

Citizens Bank Park policy requires that all fans enter the stadium by walking through metal detectors. If the device detects something, you will be required to check your pockets before additional screening with a handheld metal detector.

In accordance with MLB policy, Citizens Bank Park recommends fans do not bring any bags. According to those rules, the only bags permitted inside Citizens Bank Park are bags that do not exceed 16″x16″x8″. Possible exceptions include:

If you have any baseball fans in your group, especially any Phillies fans, you are going to want to make a stop at Citizens Bank Park for either a stadium tour or a game!

This park opened up in 2004 with a game vs the Indians, and since then it has grown into a beloved local sports staple.

If you are visiting during offseason, October - March, your group will have only the option to tour the stadium each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30, weather pending. If you are visiting during April - September , you can choose to either tour or see a home game if possible. On game days, there are public tours at 10:30 and 12:30, on non-game days at 10:30. The tours are a combination audio/visual presentation showing you the Dugout, Diamond Club, Hall of Fame Club, Broadcast Booth, and various parts of the field if possible. The tours last 90 minutes and all begin at the Majestic Clubhouse Store. Keep in mind that you will need to wear comfortable shoes, as the tour will have you walking just about a mile total.

If you are here for a game, be aware that there are several 'fun zones' to check out in between plays, such as The Yard, a kid zone with a climbing wall, pitching area, and concession stand, as well as the Phanatic Phun Zone and Phood Cart. There are several different options for concessions and meals throughout, and if you have extra time to explore we suggest checking out the Veterans Memorial on Pattison Ave!

Panoramic view of Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia

Citizens Bank Park

By Edward de la Fuente

Our guide to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia includes information on events, tickets, parking, public transportation, nearby hotels and restaurants, seating, food, bag policy and more. Read on to find out how to get the most out of your gameday experience.

Citizens Bank Park is part of the famed cluster of venues known as the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia, and also the newest of the three stadiums that stand there.

Opened in 2004 to house the Phillies, it’s across the street from Lincoln Financial Field (home of the Eagles) and the Wells Fargo Center (home of the Flyers and 76ers), near the intersection of Broad and Pattison streets that carries so much significance for so many Philly sports fans.

It wouldn’t have taken much for Citizens Bank Park to be an upgrade over the Phillies’ previous home, the often-derided Veterans Stadium, but in its 15-some years of existence, the new place has settled in nicely among the destination ballparks of the major leagues. From the lively Ashburn Alley to the Liberty Bell home run/victory display, the venue boasts its fair share of unique features.

And the home team has done its part in making memories for its fans. First and foremost was the 2008 World Series title , part of a run of dominance that included five straight division titles and two trips to the Fall Classic.

After some down seasons, the Phillies are becoming part of MLB’s elite once again — as their run to the 2022 World Series demonstrated. And they’re also promising to make Citizens Bank Park one of the most happening spots in the majors as well.

Getting to the ballpark

As mentioned above, the intersection of Broad and Pattison streets is a familiar spot to any Philly sports fan, since three professional sports venues are nearby. Citizens Bank Park, specifically, is a block to the east along Pattison, and easily recognizable among the venues and surrounding parking lots.

The entire Sports Complex is easily accessible by car via the adjacent Interstate 95, which runs just past Lincoln Financial Field as it snakes by on its route between Center City and Philadelphia International Airport. Look for signs directing drivers to the Sports Complex; Broad Street has its own exit and is well-traveled — and, of course, busy on game days.

Alternatively, I-76, also known as the Schuylkill (pronounced SKOO-kill) Expressway, runs north of the ballpark and is a more convenient route for fans coming from the northwest. Look for signs directing you to Broad Street, Packer Avenue or the Sports Complex. Follow the link for more detailed driving directions .

If it’s your first time visiting Philadelphia, you’ll quickly find that South Philadelphia isn’t exactly a place tourists would care to visit if not for the Sports Complex. It’s mostly residential and industrial, with little in the way of hotels and entertainment near Citizens Bank Park (though that has changed a little bit in recent years — see below).

Fans staying at hotels in Philadelphia’s Center City and looking to take public transportation to Citizens Bank Park can use the Broad Street Line of SEPTA , the city’s subway system. The line’s southbound terminus is at Broad and Pattison, though the station in recent years has carried a corporate sponsor name (currently, it’s NRG Station ).

Parking at Citizens Bank Park

Once you’re in the area of Citizens Bank Park, you have numerous parking options, with very large lots surrounding all three venues.

The lots surrounding Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field are popular options, as long as there isn’t an event at either of those facilities going on concurrently (which is rare). Parking rates begin at $22 for these lots, and cash is not accepted. Check this parking map to further plot your trip.

Map of the surrounding area

Things to do around the ballpark.

Amid the sea of sports venues and surface parking, there is an oasis of pregame entertainment in the Sports Complex.

Xfinity Live , built on the site of the old Spectrum arena and catty-corner from Citizens Bank Park (at the corner of Pattison and 11th streets), is the primary option for fans looking for a convenient pregame hangout. It contains a number of establishments, including some familiar names to Philly sports fans (and options you’ll also find within the ballpark).

Several other unique-to-Philly options are within a short driving distance and are worth checking out if you can swing it logistically. A few worth mentioning within about a mile of the park: Chickie’s and Pete’s (known for its “crab fries”), Tony and Nick’s Steaks (a popular option in the city’s cheesesteak wars), and John’s Roast Pork (purveyor of Philly’s other beloved sandwich, the roast pork).

Meanwhile, the recently opened Live! Casino and Hotel complex has provided an additional entertainment option before (and after) Citizens Bank Park events. It’s located just beyond the outfield gates and is visible from inside the ballpark.

A little farther away but definitely worth visiting if it’s your first time in Philadelphia: The Italian Market neighborhood , and perhaps the two most famous cheesesteak joints, Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks .

Also, Philadelphians love their tailgating, and it’s not uncommon to see a few folks hanging out next to their cars with beer and/or a grill in the hours before first pitch.

If none of those options appeal to you, then you might as well enter Citizens Bank Park, because the food inside is worth exploring and sampling — more on that in the section below.

A view of Ashburn Alley, the outfield concourse at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia

Watching a game at Citizens Bank Park

The most intriguing feature of Citizens Bank Park is behind the outfield seating area. The concourse that runs from foul pole to foul pole is named Ashburn Alley after Richie Ashburn , the beloved former Phillies player and broadcaster.

It’s full of features including the team’s Wall of Fame (behind the center-field batter’s eye), food stands and restaurants, a large team store and a famously up-close-and-personal view of the visitor’s bullpen, and it’s a good starting point for any exploration of Citizens Bank Park.

It’s not unusual to see Ashburn Alley in the middle innings swelling with fans, many of which have taken up prime standing-room positions to watch the game — or to heckle the pitchers in the visitor’s bullpen just below — while Citizens Bank Park’s seating bowl looks strangely devoid of people.

Wherever you go in the ballpark, you’re sure to see images of the Phillie Phanatic , the beloved green mascot whose presence sometimes contrasts with the gruff image of the Philly sports fan. The Phanatic himself is often found on the field between innings, performing such antics as shooting hot dogs from an air cannon .

Citizens Bank Park’s seating bowl consists of four levels, and while the uppermost rows in the 400-level can feel a little high, at least you will have a nice view of the Philadelphia skyline in the distance while you watch the game. You’ll also be able to see the lighted bell in the outfield that “rings” whenever the Phillies hit home runs, or after victories.

Speaking of bells, the team refurbished the old replica Liberty Bell that hung at Veterans Stadium, and as of the 2019 season put it on display near the Third Base Gate for fans to see and take pictures with.

And near the lighted bell display is the cheapest seating area at Citizens Bank Park, the rooftop bleachers that sit atop the Ashburn Alley concessions stands. They’re the cheapest seats in the house and offer a relaxed, if not slightly far away, view of the game.

Food and drink at Citizens Bank Park

Citizens Bank Park is also well-known for its wide selection of food options, much of which reflects the unique cuisine of the city. Several of the establishments mentioned in the section above run stands in the stadium, including Tony Luke’s and Chickie’s and Pete’s, both of which can be found in Ashburn Alley.

The cheesesteak can be found in numerous spots around the ballpark, including Tony Luke’s (which also serves roast pork sandwiches), Campo’s Steaks and Cobblestone Grill. The Philadelphia-born artist Questlove also has a cheesesteak stand serving sandwiches with Impossible Meat.

Other spots worth checking out include Shake Shack and Federal Donuts, as well as the Bull’s BBQ stand on the main concourse in left field, named after former Phillies slugger Greg “The Bull” Luzinski.

Also in left field, just below the main scoreboard, sits Harry the K’s , a fan-favorite hangout named after legendary team broadcaster Harry Kalas. A statue of Kalas, who died in 2009, greets fans walking up to the left-field plaza.

Citizens Bank Park bag and food policy

Per policy , approved bags for entry into Citizens Bank Park must measure 12 inches by 12 inches by 6 inches or smaller. They must be clear, like those permitted in NFL stadiums, with the exception of small clutches and diaper bags.

Backpacks, suitcases, large purses, hard-sided containers and bags exceeding the size limit are forbidden at Citizens Bank Park per stadium policy.

Outside food is permitted at Citizens Bank Park, as long as items are individually portioned and placed inside soft-sided containers. Each guest can bring in one plastic, factory-sealed bottle of water or non-alcoholic beverage.

Bags will be inspected by security at the entry gates to Citizens Bank Park, and patrons carrying any bags that don’t comply with stadium policy will be denied entry.

The Philadelphia Phillies (19-11) and Los Angeles Angels (11-18) play the 2nd game of a 3-game series at Angel Stadium Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:38 p.m. ET Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Phillies vs. Angels odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Angels lead 1-0

The Phillies snapped a 4-game winning streak with a 6-5 loss as -143 road favorites in the series opener Monday as the Over (9) hit. Phillies 3B Alec Bohm had 3 RBIs and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Angels snapped a 4-game skid and cashed as +131 underdogs in Monday’s win. SS Ehire Adrianza  and CF  Mike Trout gave L.A., which trailed by 3 early, the lead in the 7th inning when they scored on a wild pitch and throwing error.

Phillies at Angels projected starters

RHP Spencer Turnbull vs. LHP Tyler Anderson

Turnbull (2-0, 1.33 ERA) makes his 6th start. He has a 0.85 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 10.0 K/9 in 27 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 5 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 8 K in 7-4 loss at Cincinnati Reds Wednesday
  • 2024 road stats: 0-0, 0.82 ERA (11 IP, 1 ER), 0.82 WHIP in 2 starts
  • Has never faced Angels before

Anderson (2-3, 1.78 ERA) makes his 6th start. He has a 1.06 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9 and 6.2 K/9 in 30 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 7 K in 6-5 home loss vs. Baltimore Orioles Wednesday

  • Moneyline (ML) : Phillies -140 (bet $140 to win $100) | Angels +120 (bet $100 to win $120)
  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS) : Phillies -1.5 (+120) | Angels +1.5 (-145)
  • Over/Under (O/U) : 9 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Phillies at Angels picks and predictions

Phillies 6, Angels 4

The Phillies (-140) should bounce back after choking away a 3-run lead in the series opener, but I recommend taking them on the run line at plus-money.

PASS . Bet the RL and/or total instead.

Run line/Against the spread

Anderson hasn’t been great against Philadelphia in his career (5.56 ERA), and he especially struggled against it last season, allowing 6 earned runs in a blowout loss at Citizens Bank Park. He has looked better this season, allowing 3 runs or fewer in each start, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to maintain that level of production.

Philadelphia is averaging the 6th-most runs (4.67) in MLB over the last 3 games and should have no trouble scoring against Anderson. Turnbull has allowed just 4 earned runs all season, and the Phillies have outscored opponents by an average of 2.4 runs per game in his starts.

BET PHILLIES -1.5 ( +120 ).

The Over has hit in 5 of L.A.’s last 6 games and is 6-3-1 in Philadelphia’s last 10. However, 9 is a key number in MLB totals, and I would prefer to play this at 8.5 or lower.

LEAN OVER 9 ( +100 ).

ANAHEIM — The Angels received a pair of gut punches on Tuesday.

One came in the afternoon, when they learned they would be without injured Mike Trout for an extended period of time . The second was hours later, when they coughed up a late two-run lead in a 7-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Angels rallied from an early three-run deficit to take a two-run lead in the sixth, but the good feelings were short-lived. They gave up one run in the eighth and then Carlos Estevez yielded three in the ninth.

Estévez gave up a game-tying homer to Nick Castellanos, then a double to Bryson Stott and then a two-run homer to No. 9 hitter Johan Rojas.

“We played a pretty good team over there,” Manager Ron Washington said. “What they did is what they do. They’ve got power. And sometimes you can hold it down and sometimes you can’t. And tonight we couldn’t.”

Estévez threw Castellanos a fastball up in the zone, and he wished he had thrown it higher or lower.

“He was cheating fastball right there and he hit on the barrel,” Estévez said. “He’s a really strong guy. He’s got the pop to do that and unfortunately that one went out.”

Estévez also said the slider to Rojas should have been lower.

“It happens,” Estévez said. “Hopefully next time I’ll go out with the same mentality and I’ll execute my pitches and I believe it’s going to turn out the other way.”

Although Estevez now has a 6.23 ERA, Washington said he’s not considering removing him as his primary closer. He’s converted five of seven save chances.

“I’ve got confidence in him,” Washington said. “He’s saved five or six games already and it’s the second one he blew. I don’t think there’s a closer in baseball that hasn’t blown games.”

The blown save spoiled what might have been an encouraging response to the troubling news the Angels received earlier in the day. Trout needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Although they are expecting to get Trout back at some point this season, there is no timetable.

In the meantime, the Angels rolled out a lineup with Jo Adell, Taylor Ward, Brandon Drury and Luis Rengifo in the second through fifth spots on Tuesday night.

They were down 3-0 in the second inning, when Zach Neto put the Angels on the board with a homer to right center.

After that, the Angels didn’t threaten until the sixth inning. Ward reached on a one-out infield single. Drury then hit a bouncer directly to shortstop Trea Turner. Instead of a routine, inning-ending double play, Turner bobbled it and couldn’t make a play anywhere.

Rengifo hammered the very next pitch over the right field fence for a three-run homer, putting the Angels ahead, 4-3.

An out later, Cole Tucker doubled. He scored on a single from Mickey Moniak, who is now going to get most of the action in center field replacing Trout.

The Angels then had nine outs to get to secure the victory, and they couldn’t do it. Right-hander Luis Garcia worked a perfect seventh. Left-hander Matt Moore, who was pitching for the third day in a row, gave up a run in the eighth, recording two outs.

Washington then brought in Estévez, looking for four outs, but he only got two. Estévez said he didn’t feel fatigue from Monday’s 26-pitch outing or the extra work from pitching in the eighth were factors in what happened in the ninth.

“I felt good enough to attack the strike zone and get the outs,” he said. “Unfortunately, it turned out the other way. I got hit around, gave up the lead. But honestly, I felt good.”

Estévez couldn’t lock up the victory for Tyler Anderson, who gave up three runs in six innings, all of them coming on one swing of Kyle Schwarber’s bat in the second inning.

Anderson gave up a one-out single to Nick Castellanos and then he walked Bryson Stott. An out later, he threw Schwarber a 2-and-1 fastball over the outer half of the plate and Schwarber launched it into the left field seats.

After that, though, Anderson locked down for the rest of his outing. He faced just one over the minimum over the next four innings, including five strikeouts.

Anderson has a 2.23 ERA through six starts, a significant improvement from last year’s 5.43 mark.

“I thought he was outstanding,” Washington said. “He did a good job after he put those three runs on the board. He settled down out there and gave us a chance and that’s all you can ask. And plus he gave us six innings.”
