Ready to enter your travel era? Here’s what to expect from the PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2024

By Kara Santos Published Jan 20, 2024 12:32 pm

Mark your calendars, travel junkies. The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo will be coming back this February to address all your revenge travel needs.

With the theme “World within reach,” this year's expo will take place from Feb. 2 to 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City. The annual event organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) will once again showcase the latest travel destinations, with travel deals and exclusive discounts up for grabs.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event.

Over 200 local and international exhibitors

More than 200 exhibitors and 702 booths are expected to participate in the travel expo. There will be booths from airlines, domestic, and international travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping companies, and more. The event expects a turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts.

According to PTAA, there will be at least 68 sellers and 220 registered buyers coming from Australia, Balkan, China, Dubai, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, UAE, the US, and Vietnam.

Early access for cardholders

E vent gates of the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex will open at 10:00 a.m. on the first day, and 9:30 a.m. on the second day. However, Unionbank cardholders will get early access and may avail of special rates from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Four halls will be occupied on the second floor of the SMX Convention Center for travel boards, agents, and businesses. All the halls will be open to the public on Feb. 2 and 3.

Packages and promos to the hottest destinations

Travel enthusiats can expect a diverse range of travel packages, accommodations, flights, exclusive discounts, and other travel-related services. The expo will offer packages and promos for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation, and accommodations, with various payment options to cater to every type of traveler.

According to PTTA, among the top destinations for local and foreign tourists within the Philippines are Palawan, Boracay, and Bohol, with Batanes emerging as a rising destination.

Korea and Japan top the list of international destinations that Filipinos want to travel to along with Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore for first-time local travelers. Meanwhile, high-end travelers often opt for European destinations.

Human connection from travel agencies

While booking trips via digital platforms has made travel more convenient, the travel expo will give attendees a chance to speak to travel agents who can provide personalized service and explain travel deals and packages more thoroughly.

Travel agents can provide a “human connection” and expertise to answer questions on specific destinations, misconnections, missing luggage, and insurance, among others.

In a press conference in Makati on Jan. 18, PTAA noted the rise of new travel trends such as gig tripping where fans travel to foreign countries to watch concerts; and set-jetting , which involves traveling to destinations featured as film locations in popular movies and television shows, which travel agencies can customize packages around.

Domestic and international flight deals

Travel enthusiasts can browse around and book flights from at least 19 airlines flying to different local and international destinations. Airlines include flag carriers and budget airlines of top destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well as Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

PTAA moves on with renewed goals

philippine travel agencies association (ptaa)

Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) is emerging stronger from an internal crisis, with the new board of trustees outlining plans to enhance and improve it moving forward.

Newly-elected president, Mariegel Tankiang Manotok, said a membership drive is ongoing to bring in new members and bring back those who did not renew their membership.

The 648 members pre-pandemic that dwindled to 299 in 2023 is slowly going up to 400 plus members and targeted to reach 1,000 by 2025.

The organisation of the yearly Travel Tour Expo (TTE) – the country’s biggest – is being studied now, to explore the possibility of it being hosted not just in Manila but also in the Visayas and Mindanao. Manotok said instead of them coming to Manila, PTAA will go to them.

This year’s TTE, held from February 2-4 at SMX Manila, will be the biggest and grandest in all aspects, said Patty Chiong, past PTAA president and chair of TTE 2024. The two exhibition floors are sold out with 702 exhibitor booths from 25 countries.

The new board is also pushing for more CSR initiatives, such as looking into the purchase of boats for boatmen in Pagsanjan, Laguna; sustainable tourism training for communities; and collaborations with slow food (a global movement acting together to ensure good, clean and fair food for all) movement in the provinces, among others.

To unite members, Manotok shared: “In the coming months, we will be organising workshops, brainstorming sessions, and interactive forums to facilitate the exchange of ideas for us to inspire, empower, and unite all our members.

“PTAA thrives when every member feels valued and engaged. We will implement membership programmes to enhance communication, collaboration, inclusivity, and expansion within our community. By fostering a supportive and diverse environment, we strengthen the collective voice of PTAA and create a platform for innovation, growth, and shared success.”

While a problem-free journey cannot be guaranteed, Manotok stressed that “our focus will be on fortifying ourselves with a solid foundation to effectively address any future challenges”.

“The key here is that we are willing to serve our members with passion, dedication and true spirit of service for the love of PTAA. Together, we can build a future where our association adapts to change and thrives in it,” she added.

Outlining the vision for PTAA, Manotok said: “We will actively engage with policymakers and advocate for policies that support the growth and sustainability of the travel industry. By serving as a united voice, we can influence decisions that impact our profession and ensure that the interests of travel agents are well-represented at local, national, and international levels.”

PTAA sets 29th Travel Tour Expo, 7th International Travel Trade Expo 2022

philippine travel agencies association (ptaa)

Bouncing back and reinvigorating the tourism industry, the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) proudly presents the PTAA 29th Travel Tour Expo and the seventh International Travel Trade Expo to be held at the SMX Convention Center, Manila from June 24 to 26, 2022.

With the theme, “Braving and shaping the future of travel,” the upcoming face-to-face travel tour expo will be offering great travel deals and awesome tour packages for both foreign and domestic travellers.

Not only as a great business opportunity for both parties, but it is also an encouragement for tourism and travel in general, says Michelle Taylan, PTAA president.

The grand event signifies the recovery of travel and tourism this 2022 where the pandemic is nothing to be feared anymore.

This is the year where travel businesses will flourish, and this is where we bring a new golden age for tourism, adds Taylan.

Following the resounding success of last year’s event, which gathered key personalities from the government and the different embassies, the PTAA 29th Travel Tour Expo and the seventh International Travel Trade Expo promise a bigger expo, wider participation from stakeholders, and more exciting offers while observing and maintaining the minimum health standards, set by the government.

This year’s travel tour expo will occupy function rooms 1 to 5 on the second floor of the SMX Convention Center in Manila with more than 150 exhibitors and with 35,000 to 45,000 visitors expected to attend. The three-day event will be filled with raffle draws, corporate game shows, entertainment, and presentations from exhibitors and sponsors.

PTAA hero: Meet the Pandemic President of PTAA, Michelle G. Taylan

There is no denying that this pandemic hit our country, its people and its economy, terribly. With our tourism industry receiving the hardest blow, it was surely a challenge to be presiding over the Philippine Travel Agencies Association. However, this was a challenge fit for our PTAA Hero, our Pandemic President, Ms. Michelle G. Taylan, who not only helped the industry survive, but also did everything to make it bounce back.

PITAA Michelle

Before becoming the President of the PTAA, Michelle Taylan first served as its Secretary General, giving her the knowledge and experience in leading the country’s largest Travel Agency Association. Taylan was also a businesswoman; she first founded Klik ‘n Fly Travel and Tours in 2011 while taking her Masters Degree in Business Administration. The inspiration for opening a travel agency in our country stemmed from working as an in-house travel consultant for Koreans, realizing that she can offer this service, not only to her kababayans and Korean clients, but also to people all over the world and with that, Klik ‘N Fly was born.

Challenges from Day One

Starting her term in the middle of the pandemic was the first of many hurdles for Ms. Michelle. Along with her PTAA Presidency, she was also serving as the Secretary General for Federation of Asean Travel Association (FATA), surely juggling these two roles was not an easy feat. With the eruption of the Taal Volcano at the beginning of 2020, to the further onset of the COVID-19 and the travel restrictions that came with it, all PTAA members were left with no choice but to cease operations and focus on other businesses to survive.

As a first step to helping her people, Taylan led the appeals to DILG for the rationalization of business tax computation, discount on business fees, postponement of lease payments, and even waiving of operational fees, all in the spirit of bayanihan. When vaccines started to roll out, her voice was also heard pushing for the prioritization of tourism frontliners’ vaccination.

Spearheading “Bigas Mula sa Puso”, Ms. Michelle started giving sacks of rice as a help to her fellow tourism workers. She and her team were able to distribute 300 sacks of rice in the first batch, further urging others to donate, should they be able to. Later on, PTAA also followed suit with a similar project called “Bigas Kalinga sa Panahon ng Pandemya” which distributed sacks of rice all over NCR and the Rizal area.

Defying the odds

With brighter days expected for the year 2021, the former year was spent preparing for it. Various hybrid trainings and webinars to prepare new protocols were held to make sure traveling can be as safe as possible and sure enough, the new year came with a slight ease on the travel restrictions. Taylan saw this as an opportunity to start the revival of our country’s tourism industry and with this, PTAA successfully launched the first ever face-to-face Travel Trade show since the pandemic! Expectations on customer turn up was low since the country still had travel restrictions during this time, but miraculously these restrictions were eased on the first day of the exhibit!

PTAA Michelle

The yearly PTAA Travel and Tour Expo, despite being pushed back and postponed numerous times, were also successfully held under Taylan’s pandemic term, providing explorers options on which destination on their bucket list to check first. Travel agencies and accommodations from all over the Philippines delightfully attended the expo and showed the travelers the new normal in travelling. Gratitude from business owners poured out to Taylan as they are finally seeing a light at the end of this seemingly hopeless situation through sales made from the expo.

As part of her tourism recovery projects, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Association (MATTA) and Taiwan Visitors Association (TVA). This aimed to strengthen tourism exchanges, promote each other’s sightseeing spots, and to increase the number of tourists for both parties. Ms.Michelle Taylan was also one of first travel agents to be invited by the Jeju Tourism Organization to help in reopening South Korea’s border to tourists.

Defeating all odds, we can all agree that Michelle Taylan has led this organization to success despite the unending obstacles on her PTAA Presidency. She is set to end her term on a victorious note as the biggest and grandest PTAA Travel and Tour Expo is happening soon this Feb 3-5, 2023, at the SMX Convention Center, with a theme “A Bigger and Stronger Future of Travel is Here” offering irresistible deals and huge discounts to aspiring travelers.

Travel agencies see growth in 2024 bookings of 20-25%

philippine travel agencies association (ptaa)

THE Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) said it expects bookings to grow 20-25% this year, citing pent-up demand from the pandemic.

“I would say initially… around 20% to 25% and growing further because the interest in travel is growing,” PTAA Chairperson Patria T. Chiong said at a briefing on Thursday.

Ms. Chiong also said international visitor numbers are projected at 7.7 million this year, which would exceed the 5.45 million actual arrivals in 2023.

“The enthusiasm for travel and to see different places once again is making for a buoyant travel industry, and we at PTAA are very much ready to cater to the demand,” PTAA President Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok said.

In 2019, the last full year before the pandemic, the Philippines admitted 8.26 million international visitors, according to the Department of Tourism.

Asked whether the lower fuel surcharge will affect travel demand, Ann Marie Kho, sales manager at AirSWIFT Transport, Inc., said the surcharge adjustment’s impact may not be immediate.

In an advisory on Wednesday, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) said the fuel surcharge for Feb. 1-28 will be lowered to Level 6, after the average price of jet fuel stood at P38.92 per liter between Dec. 10 and Jan. 9.

“The CAB determines when we’re supposed to apply the adjustment… if there is a continuous decrease in fuel prices (it will) definitely impact prices,” Ms. Kho said.

The PTAA is set to conduct the 31 st Travel Tour Expo and 9 th International Travel Trade Expo 2024 between Feb. 2 and 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City.

The association said that the trade fair will feature travel deals, discounts, and destination packages for a wide range of budgets and travel preferences.

“We are pooling together our expertise under one roof to provide Filipino travelers the best advice and make them realize that there are many options for them,” Ms. Tankiang-Manotok said. — Sheldeen Joy Talavera

Travel associations appeal for more support for the tourism industry

  • June 24, 2021
  • 2 minute read

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) and other travel groups are seeking for more assistance from the Department of Tourism.

In a letter to the DOT, the PTAA noted “ongoing financial challenges and impact to business” from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are one with the department’s endeavor towards recovery and to support businesses severely hit by the continuing coronavirus disease,” PTAA President Michelle Taylan wrote in the letter addressed to DOT Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

The travel association is requesting further assistance from state insurers like the Social Security System, PhilHealth and PAGIBIG in maximizing the availment of benefits for PTAA members and other stakeholders in the travel industry who may currently be suffering from financial constraints due to either limited or shuttered business.

The group also seeks discounted lifeline packages for other recurring monthly bills that need to be settled while on operation. This includes utilities and telecommunication payment dues.

“You can just imagine the financial burden of having to pay off these otherwise usual items, without actual income,” Taylan said. “We are hoping to give tourism industry workers a bit of relief kahit sa simpleng mga bayarin kada buwan.”

The PTAA launched its “Bills Support Care” campaign, taking inspiration from the various community pantries being set up in different parts of the country.

The association expects momentum for the tourism industry to take off following the vaccination of the A4 priority group which includes tourism workers.

“We see some silver lining as vaccination of economic frontliners begin. It would just be a matter of time until we see tourism boom again. But until such time, we hope to provide whatever help we can to ailing businesses,” Taylan said.

Leisure travel to and from the NCR Plus to areas under more relaxed restrictions or those in modified general community quarantine has been allowed, but limited to point-to-point travel.

Travelers aged below 18 years old and those older than 65 must present a negative RT-PCR test result. Swab test requirements of those in-between age groups will depend on their destination’s local government unit protocol. Aside from the PTAA and TCP, other travel associations like the PATA, NAITAS, QCTAA, PATS, ALTTA, ATTAP, ATTA, BAPTTA, BATFOI, BITATOA, BSTA, BOSZTAA, CTTA, DTAA, ITATOA, NEATOP, PTOTAA, QuePATTA, TATToO, R1TTA, and the RTAA join the call to seek assistance for travel and tourism workers gravely affected this pandemic.
