Behind the Scenes Tour at PNC Park is a Must for Baseball Fans

PNC Park is home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and is also considered to be one of the most beautiful ballparks in the country.

While a great place to be during a game, the park is also home to a behind the scenes tour that goes to a number of interesting spots inside the stadium that you normally won't see in a regular game, including:

  • Legacy Theater
  • The Clubhouse (away days only*)
  • Batting Cages, Tunnel, and Dugout
  • The Press Box
  • Club Level and Suites

Taking this tour was high on my Pittsburgh bucket list, but I always had trouble scheduling a visit to coincide with a date I could get inside the Clubhouse. Now that I finally made that happen, it is time to share a few highlights from the tour!

Legacy Theater at PNC Park

Legacy Theater at PNC Park

If you've spent a lot of time walking around PNC Park, you may have seen the sign for Legacy Theater and wondered what it is.

This rather small museum, located near the entrance by the rotunda, features a timeline of the Pirates long history, a wall of first accomplishments (including participating in the first World Series, hosting the first night game in a World Series, the first all-minority starting line-up, and more), as well as examples of lockers from the past three ballparks including memorabilia from each.

Behind the Scenes Tour at PNC Park

For those who go on days where you cannot get into the Pirates Clubhouse, you'll see a behind-the-scenes video in this room as well; but if you do get access then they skip the video (as was the case on my tour).

As far as museums go this one is quite small but starts the tone of the tour off right with a vast amount of Pirates history.

The Pirates Clubhouse

No photos inside the Pirates Clubhouse

If you are taking the tour when the Pirates are away, odds are good you may be allowed into the Clubhouse.

This particular spot was the highlight of my tour and is something we highly recommend scheduling your visit around. The reason? It includes the locker room, the training facility, and much more!

While photos are not allowed in the Clubhouse at all (I had to leave my camera and phone on a table when we got in), all I can really say is it is a really surreal experience that really is the heart and soul of all things Pirates.

To see the lockers, see the schedules, and learn about some of the inner-workings of the team in this particular room is simply amazing.

The only downside is that this is only accessible on days when the Pirates are away, and in the past was also rumored to be limited to non-game, non-travel days as well (so when there was a break in a series). Unfortunately, exact dates where you can go inside the Clubhouse are not listed on the site, so you'll likely have to make your booking based on when the Pirates are away and hope for the best.

*Note, I booked my tour specifically to be there on a non-game, non-travel away day when they had a break in a series just in case. Unfortunately, the guides could not confirm whether they go in on all away days or not as is implied on PNC Park's website. We will update in the future once we know for sure.

Batting Cages and the Dugout

Pirates Batting Cages

Once you leave the Clubhouse (if available on your tour) it is on to the batting cages to learn more about all the strategy and statistics that go on in learning how to time a pitch.

To say that it is down to a science is one thing, but this is even more impressive when you have to keep in mind that every player must make a decision within a fraction of a second as well!

PNC Park Tour Stop at the Tunnel

After hitting the batting cages its time to go through the tunnel, complete with the iconic Roberto Clemente quote, and into the dugout and out onto the field.

The Pirates Dugout

During this stop of the tour, you'll learn all about the maintenance of the field including some rather interesting details like how much water the field can absorb during rain (several inches an hour) and that the dirt around the track is actually volcanic rock that is super porous to allow water to pass through and feel dry even in rain!

Suffice it to say, there are a lot of interesting details that go on to ensure the field is perfect for game day!

Stellar Views at the Press Box and Suites

View from the Press Box at PNC Park

The final stops on the tour are on the top levels of the stadium to see the press box and suites.

The press box was the second biggest highlight of the tour for me because it has the best view of the entire stadium thanks to its elevated perch. I really could've stayed in this one all day!

Club Level at PNC Park

After visiting the press box, your final stop on the tour is into the VIP suites and club level- potentially the only spot on the tour you may have seen before if you have attended a game with the premium ticket.

Here you learn a number of neat behind the scenes details including how the suites got their numbers, all of the number 9 references at Keystone Corner (subtle nods to Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski), and more!

Overall, whether you're a Pirates fan, baseball fan, or even a sports fan at all is immaterial- you really should check out the tour at PNC Park. Both the team and the park itself have a fascinating history, and learning it all is a truly unique experience in Pittsburgh !

PNC Park Empty

Tours of PNC Park are generally conducted every day except Sunday, April through September, but exact times vary based on whether a game is scheduled or not. The guides noted that tours sell out fast during the summer as school groups book up the timeslots in advance. Winter tours may also be available based on conversations with the guides but online information is sparse.

Touring the Hidden Corners of PNC Park in Pittsburgh

Touring PNC Park in Pittsburgh PA

I’m a huge baseball fan and have made a point to visit many baseball stadiums during my travels. However, despite this, I’ve never actually had a chance to tour a stadium until recently when I toured PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Home to the Pirates since 2001, PNC Park is consistently ranked as one of the best baseball stadiums in the country. In fact, I think it’s the best stadium in the US, and I’m not even a Pirates fan. So, when I found out that they offered tours, I excitedly jumped at the chance to visit.

Private tours of PNC Park are available during the week and on select Saturdays during the baseball season, starting in mid-April and continuing until the Pirates finish their season, playoffs included. Tours leave from the stadium’s left field gate next to the Willie Stargell statue and last roughly 90 minutes.

Tour of PNC Park entrance

My tour of the stadium started with a brief orientation and history of the ballpark while standing in the left field bleachers.

My guide told me about the history of the Pirates organization and a few interesting tidbits about the stadium. For example, the lights of PNC Park were designed to look like those at Forbes Field, but were almost deemed too small for Major League Baseball standards.

To combat these, lighting engineers were hired to precisely point each individual light to achieve acceptable lighting throughout the stadium.

The first official stop on the tour is Legacy Theater and Museum. Here, I was told about the many great firsts in Pirates history (like how the Pirates owner invented the World Series). There are also actual lockers from Forbes Field, Three Rivers Stadium, and PNC Park on display here.

Pittsburgh Pirates Lockers PNC Park, Pittsburgh PA

Should you be visiting on a day that the Pirates are in town or are traveling to/from Pittsburgh, you’ll be shown a video here of the Pirates clubhouse. However, if you visit in the middle of a road trip, you’ll actually be able to go into the clubhouse.

While the video does show you a few places you can’t see on the tour, like the swimming pool, I’d recommend going on a day when you can actually walk into the clubhouse, as it’s an amazing experience.

Unfortunately, cameras aren’t allowed in the clubhouse itself, but I was blown away to be standing there. Looking around the room, you can get a close up look at the lockers of the players. The lockers are full of each player’s personal items and uniforms. If you are a baseball fan, it really is quite amazing to see inside this area.

Entrance to Pittsburgh Pirates Clubhouse

While I was in the clubhouse, my guide explained each of the things that we saw. The wall is plastered with schedules, rules, and lineups. I also walked by the manager’s office and had a chance to peer into both the weight room and the training room. Unfortunately, this is the only part of the tour where no photos are allowed.

The next stop on the tour is the batting cages. Here, it was explained to me the routine that players go through to get warm and how they use the variety of TV monitors and equipment to study their swings.

From there, we went through the tunnels that the players would use to go from the clubhouse to the dugout. As a kid I dreamed of playing Major League Baseball, so to walk into a dugout and run up the steps and onto the field was really something of a dream come true.

Pittsburgh Pirates Dugout on Tour of PNC Park

While you are only allowed in the dugout and the dirt in front of it, it was fun to stand in these areas and see what the players see (though I had to imagine the thousands of cheering fans). While in this area, my guide explained various things in the dugout, as well as told me about the unique aspects of the Pirates’ grass and dirt.

View from Pirates Dugout on a tour of PNC Park in PIttsburgh, PA

The rest of the tour continued to the upper areas of the stadium, including the press box (but not the radio or TV booths, unfortunately) and the club and suite levels. All along the way, my guide was telling me a variety of interesting facts about the stadium and the team’s history. It’s amazing how much they have woven the team’s history into the stadium, and I’m sure even season ticket holders would learn something they didn’t know.

PNC Park Tour - View from Pressbox

I really can’t express how much I enjoyed my tour of PNC Park. Even though I’m not a Pirates fan, I found the tour to be very interesting and it was a real treat to be able to see places like the clubhouse and the dugout. I would highly recommend a tour of PNC Park to any baseball lover, no matter which team you support.

Note: My tour of PNC Park was provided courtesy of Visit Pittsburgh. However, the opinions expressed are my own.

Thanks! I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stay long enough in the morning to take the tour myself, but I may visit the grounds outside the park.

Thank you Jim for sharing your experience touring PNC Park. Reading about your trip there and getting the play-by-play from you makes me want to go check it out too. PNC Park is such a gorgeous ballpark I think everyone should see it whether you like the Pirates or not. It would be an enjoyable event and a fun time to see all the park on the tour, especially places only open to the tour. Thanks again Jim for the article it was a good read!

I definitely agree. Having been to around a dozen stadiums, including some newer than PNC Park, it’s definitely the most beautiful stadium in MLB, and a tour is a great way to learn more about how the sport operates.

A Guide to Acrisure Stadium for Steelers Fans

In town for a big game? We've got the scoop on how to enjoy a Steelers game in the ultimate sports town!

Nicknamed the City of Champions , it's no surprise that Pittsburgh is a top football destination. Whether you're visiting from out-of-town or haven't been to a game in a while, check out our Pittsburgh Steelers and Acrisure Stadium guide for every football fan.

Where do the Steelers play their home games?

Acrisure Stadium, formerly known as Heinz Field, is the renowned football stadium situated in the North Shore neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that proudly serves as the home of the Steelers.

How to get to Acrisure Stadium

Public Transportation Since parking on the North Shor near the stadium is reserved and pre-sold, it's often easier to park and ride to the stadium using other options. Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) offers light rail service on the “T” and city buses for fans coming from Downtown Pittsburgh and surrounding suburbs. You can find more information on how to get to the stadium on the PRT website .

Riverboat Shuttles The Gateway Clipper also offers gameday riverboat rides to the stadium and is my personal favorite way to get to the game. Park at Station Square, grab your tickets and enjoy your ride around the Point with raucous, fun-loving fans before getting dropped off right at the stadium. Find more information about riverboat shuttles here .

Driving & Parking Information If you are planning to drive and park near the stadium, visit ALCO parking for a helpful interactive guide to parking on the North Shore.

Where’s the best place to tailgate before a Steelers game?

The tailgating scene in Pittsburgh is a lot of fun. You can find tailgaters grilling and getting amped up with the rest of Steelers Nation in designated parking lots. The parking lots open five hours prior to kick-off and you can find more tailgating information and regulations here .

If you want to tailgate but don't have a group to join up with, the Stage AE Tailgate Zone is perfect for you! Admission is free, and the event has live music, giant TVs, food and drink specials, along with prizes and autographed items you can win.

Where to eat near Acrisure Stadium?

The North Shore, home to Acrisure Stadium, is filled with plenty of bars and restaurants for all football fans. Shorty's Pins & Pints, Southern Tier , Burgatory and Bar Louie are also popular spots to grab a craft beer pre- or post-game that are walkable to Acrisure.

What else to do near Acrisure Stadium?

There's so much to do in the North Shore we did a whole blog about everything you can do pre- or post-game, from stadium tours and museum visits to kayaking, duckpin bowling and shopping for the latest Steelers merch.

Browse the map below to see everything going on nearby in the North Shore. Just double check times and hours of operation, which sometimes change on Steelers Sundays.

What is the Acrisure Stadium bag policy?

Leave your backpacks and large tote bags at home because Acrisure Stadium has an “All Clear On Game Day” safety policy requiring guests to carry their items in clear bags. Any non-clear bag exceeding 4.5” by 6.5” is not permitted. For all the security guidelines detailing what you can and cannot bring into the stadium, including food, drinks, strollers, and more, check out the security guidelines page here .

Where to eat inside the stadium?

New for 2023: You can now find additional Caliente Pizza locations as well as new Little Caesars pizza stops throughout the stadium for your pizza fix. Other fan favorites now on the menu in-stadium include chipped ham, an Only in Pittsburgh favorite, plus poutine tots and fudge puppies.

Besides Caliente, you can find many other delicious Pittsburgh favorites right in the stadium. Primanti’s, Burgatory, and Chickie & Pete’s are among the local favorites. We also blogged about our favorites to eat at Acrisure.

If you want to gauge all your options, the Steelers Mobile App has an interactive map showing the concessions and where they are located.

Are there family-friendly activities for Steelers fans?

The Steelers Hall of Honor Museum , located near Gate B of Acrisure Stadium, is open to the public year-round Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. It's a perfect pre-game experience for fans of all ages. Walk through every decade of Steelers history with interactive displays loaded with memorabilia. Guests can even step into the announce booth and call their own plays as they relive the greatest moments in Steelers history. For passes, museum exhibits and all you need to know for your visit, explore our Insider's Guide to the Hall of Honor .

Outside of the stadium, be sure to head to Art Rooney Avenue on game day for the Steelers Experience and a family fun zone.

More Cool Things to Do Near Acrisure Stadium

  • Show your Pittsburgh pride by taking a selfie with the Roberto Clemente Statue, which sits outside of PNC Ballpark.
  • Stand at the spot of the Immaculate Reception, the most well-known play in NFL history, where Steelers legend Franco Harris caught a ball just before it touched the grass and changed the fate of the franchise.
  • Ride to the game in style. Park in Station Square and ride the Gateway Clipper on our scenic three rivers, available pre- and post-game.
  • Watch more sports! The Penguins , Pirates , Riverhounds and Pitt Panthers’ seasons all overlap with the Steelers.
  • If you have time before or after the game, take a ride on the Duquesne Incline nearby for amazing city and river views.
  • If you need to level-up your gear game, Yinzers in the Burgh in the Strip District is one of the area’s most notable sports stores with lots of creative and crazy gear for fans.
  • Go behind the scenes with a tour of Acrisure Stadium . Tours are family-friendly and take fans on the field, in the locker rooms, and more.
  • Tap into sports history at the Senator John Heinz History Center's Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum , the ultimate museum for Pittsburgh sports lovers.

Don't Forget to Brush Up On Your Pittsburgh Steelers Trivia

What is The Terrible Towel? Created by Steelers radio broadcaster, Myron Cope in 1975, the Terrible Towel is easily one of the most recognizable symbols in the NFL and waving it during games has become a revered tradition. Towels can be purchased in stadium or at sports stores around the North Shore.

What is the song played during the fourth quarter? When the Steelers need a big stop in the fourth quarter, the song Renegade by Styx resonates throughout Acrisure Stadium. Playing the song is a tradition that's equally important for fans as it is for players and represents Pittsburgh's defensive strength in the fourth quarter.

What’s the meaning behind the Steelers logo? While it's widely known that the Steelers are named for Pittsburgh's rich steel history, few recognize the meaning behind the logo. Each of the hypocycloids represents one of the three materials used to make steel. Yellow represents coal, red is for iron ore and steel scrape is illustrated with blue.

Why do Steelers fans chant “Here We Go Steelers?” During games, you'll hear fans chanting "Here We Go, Steelers!" While it seems like a simple chant, there's some history behind this one too. “Here We Go,” originally written by Rodger Wood and recorded in 1994, was and still is intended as a Steelers fight song. Having sold more than 120,000 copies of the original, Here We Go is now regularly updated to mention current players' names and has become an anthem for the team during playoffs.

When should I head to a game this season? Take a look at the Steelers’ 2023 schedule here! The Steelers will be playing 9 regular season and 1 preseason game at Acrisure Stadium from August-January this year.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Journey and Def Leppard are coming to Pittsburgh next summer.

The two legendary rock groups will be joined by Steve Miller Band at PNC Park on July 27.

Journey and Def Leppard announced The Summer Stadium Tour 2024 on Thursday. Throughout the tour, they'll also be supported by Heart and Cheap Trick on select dates.

The tour kicks off in Saint Louis at Busch Stadium and makes more than two dozen stops across North America before wrapping up in Denver at Coors Field on Sept. 8. The bands will be in Pennsylvania two more times with shows scheduled at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 23 and Hersheypark Stadium on July 25.

"Having just completed a sensational 18 month run promoting our 'Diamond Star Halos' album, we shall hit the boards running with a brand-new stage show and set of songs that will celebrate specific parts of our history," Joe Elliott of Def Leppard said in a news release. "We may even have a surprise or two up our sleeves … so, wanna join us !??! … See you in the summer !"

Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. with a presale leading up to that date.

Another major rock concert is also on the schedule for PNC Park next year. Green Day and The Smashing Pumpkins  will play on Sept. 1. The Savior Tour celebrates the release of Green Day's new album with the same title, set to drop on Jan. 19, as well as 30 years of "Dookie" and 20 years of "American Idiot."

Madeline is a digital web producer for KDKA. She has worked for the station since 2019.

British rock legends brazenly tap Pittsburgh band to open show at Cleveland Browns Stadium

C LEVELAND, Ohio - The Rolling Stones have announced the artists who will have the honor of opening for the rock icons as they take their latest musical trek through America’s stadiums. For the Saturday, June 15, show at Cleveland Browns Stadium , the Stones have chosen Pittsburgh “rock n’ blues” Ghost Hounds , who have previously opened for the Stones as well as ZZ Top, Garth Brooks and Bob Seger.

The band’s most recent album, “First Last Time,” their fourth full-length release, was released in July of 2023. Tickets for the show are still on sale at ticketmaster.com .

Any Greater Cleveland area fans who may be triggered by the choice of a proud Pittsburgh band performing at a massive show at Cleveland Browns Stadium can take easy solace in the simple fact that The Rolling Stones’ “Hackney Diamonds Tour” will be completely ignoring the hometown of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Other acts opening on the “Hackney Diamonds Tour” include singer-guitarist Gary Clark Jr. (Houston), soul legend Bettye LaVette and country singer Lainey Wilson (Chicago), veteran jam band Widespread Panic (Denver) and teenaged punk rock grrrls The Linda Lindas (Los Angeles.)

About Porter Robinson:

At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds , Porter released the RIAA Gold single “Shelter” with Madeon in 2016, followed by a Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which led to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single “Ghost Voices.” In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky Festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day. In both 2020 and 2021, Porter Robinson hosted editions of his virtual festival Secret Sky, amassing over 6 million viewers combined, and which came to be regarded as the most sophisticated virtual festivals of its time. Later in 2021, following the release of sophomore album Nurture, Second Sky Festival made its return to the Bay Area, selling out 40,000 tickets in a single day. Immediately following, the Nurture Live North American Tour sold over 150,000 concert tickets and was the highest grossing electronic tour of 2021. In 2022, in partnership with Riot Games, Robinson released “Everything Goes On” surpassing 100 million global streams . Later that year was his debut of one of two exclusive full live band performances, first at Second Sky 2022 and again in 2023 at the Coachella Main Stage.
