While agritourism, attracting visitors to farms, is growing in popularity in many parts of the world, it is unfamiliar in the Gulf countries. In Kuwait, the Blue Lake Farm is one of the leading farms in this field. Located in the Abdali area of northern Kuwait, the farm opens up to the public at the end of each week and educates visitors about the different sections of the farm and the different growing seasons of vegetables and fruits produced by the farm. The farm has become a very famous destination among Kuwaitis and people from other Gulf countries who have come to enjoy their time there.  The Blue Lake Farm  has succeeded in creating a Kuwaiti agricultural brand and exports its products to the Gulf Cooperation Council market. AGSIW spoke with Ali al-Awadhi, the executive manager of Nabta to learn about his father’s farm and agritourism in Kuwait.

AGSIW: Since agritourism is not well-known in the Gulf region, how did you come up with this idea?

Ali: It started seven years ago. We used to sell our farm’s products in the Kuwaiti market, but we were always struggling with the price fluctuations and the market competition. Then my father, Abdulrahman al-Awadhi, the owner of the farm, came up with the idea of selling our harvest inside the farm so that the people can come from Kuwait City to the Abdali area to spend their day doing activities like picking vegetables and fruit and also learning about agriculture, and at the same time they can buy our products. We wanted to sell our produce in an easy and creative way.

AGSIW : Your farm became very famous not only among Kuwaiti society but also among many people in the other Gulf countries. How have you managed to keep this project successful?

Ali: The main reason is that we are keen to have new products every year and new activities as well. For instance, we started with picking fruit and vegetables and now we are allowing our visitors to go to pick flowers from our gardens, too. We planted sugar cane two years ago in our farm, thus Blue Lake is the first farm in Kuwait to grow sugar cane in a commercial quantity. Our visitors can buy sugar cane and extract juice from it while they are sitting in a sugar cane field. We also have a plant nursery where people can buy seeds. This is a pioneer experience for planting in Kuwait. We also designed the farm in a way that people can spend their day sitting to drink tea or coffee and they can even grill at the farm. All of this creates an environment for families to enjoy their time on the farm. This year we will start a new activity, animal feeding, in addition to establishing a bird sanctuary inside the farm.

AGSIW: You also provide some courses on your farm. Would you tell us more about them?

Ali: We educate our visitors about agriculture through courses that they can use in their home gardens to plant things such as sugar cane, strawberry cultivation, flower decoration, and many others. Currently, my father is giving online courses as well.

AGSIW: After your long experience in agritourism, do you think that this kind of tourism can became popular in the Gulf region?

Ali: Yes. We were contacted by farm owners in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain who want to mimic our experience with strawberry agriculture, for instance. Also, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in Saudi Arabia does support agritourism. So, there are some modest efforts in that direction in almost all the Gulf countries, but this needs more seriousness and more hard work. I think the khaleeji market, in general, is ready for this new business, but we need serious people to start implementing this idea.

AGSIW: Do you receive support from any governmental or civil bodies in Kuwait to sustain your farm and the production of local products?

Ali: We still do not have laws that regulate or support agritourism in Kuwait since it is still a new field. But we receive a wide range of visitors on the farm, like ministers, sheikhs, and academics and they all show support for our project, which is unofficial support. Now there are several farms in Kuwait trying to mimic our project and they have different specialties like fish, cheese, and bird farms. We try to cooperate with them and make our farms complementary to one another.

AGSIW:  One of your famous projects is Nabta  (Plant). Would you give us more details about this project?

Ali: One of the products we plant and sell on the farm is aromatic herbs like mint. Those herbs are very popular in the Gulf where people usually drink them with tea. Hence, I wanted to take advantage of this popularity and sell our herbs in an unorthodox way. In 2013, I went to visit different farms and agricultural exhibitions around the world to get new ideas on packing and marketing, and I came up with the idea of selling ready-to-use tea cups filled with different blends of herbs and tea leaves. We named these cups “Nabta.” By 2015, Nabta became popular in different Kuwaiti markets and the project expanded and we exported our teacups to other markets in some of the Gulf countries, but we were still distributing the product on a limited scale.

Later on, I noticed that instant Arabic coffee became a trend among khaleejis, especially the youth, which became an alternative to the traditional Arabic coffee that needs long preparation time. I wanted to compete with this market and introduce a unique product. I found a company in Denmark that manufactured bags that can hold hot water like a pot. To me, this was typically a dallah, or coffee pot. So, we collaborate with them and then we chose one of the top khaleeji Arabic coffee companies to sell their coffee and developed what we called “ Dallat Nabta ,” or Nabtah’s Pot, in 2016, which became a very original product of Arabic instant coffee in the Gulf region. Now we receive plenty of orders as the pot became highly popular in the khaleej and we have business agents in all the Gulf countries. Through the brand of “Nabta,” our farm became capable of exporting its product to all the Gulf countries.

AGSIW: Do you plan to export these khaleeji/Arab products internationally?

Ali: We do receive orders from numerous non-Arab countries like Japan, Azerbaijan, and Britain in addition to many Arab countries. The problem is that our product is targeted to the middle class and so our prices are considered high. Most of the countries want us to sell these products at low prices to make available to their people and to us this is problematic especially when you think about the costs that we would pay for taxes and shipping. So now we are considering the idea of producing low-cost products to export them to the international market and compete with the international products.

A large area of agricultural farms lying to the East of Road 80 to Basra (Iraq) close to the northern border of Kuwait. Access is by private car, driving on dirt-roads through private farmland and orchards. It is not an easy area to navigate on one's own - it is best to visit with a local naturalist guide who has owner's permission to enter farmland. 

Farmland in the desert - and almost next to the Iraqi frontier!  Birds from Iraq and Iran can sometimes be found here – and some of them are extreme rarities in the Western Palearctic. The whole area is worth scrutinising – as the first Asian Koel for the Western Palearctic at Ouda Al-Bathali Farm in February 2009 proved.  This is the only reliable area in Kuwait to see the Afghan Babbler; and perhaps the best site for the species in the Western Palearctic. This species has bred successfully on Yacoub Boodai’s Farm since 2007 and small groups are encountered in the scattered shrub on his farm. It is best to travel with a local birder as access to this private farm has been kindly granted by the owner. Abdaly is a good area to search for Shikra in Kuwait and the tree-lined Mohammed Al-Ajmi Farm (30.0149°N, 47.7503°E) hosts these rare hawks annually. Note that most Accipters in Kuwait are Sparrowhawks – so good views and preferably photographs, are needed to make a positive identification, particularly as the Shikras occurring in Kuwait are of the larger Iranian race ( cenchroides) . This area is also the most reliable site for Red-wattled Lapwing in Kuwait, mainly in winter and early spring, when flocks of up to 15 can sometimes be seen. Obviously with so much habitat on private farms, there may be other specials waiting to be discovered; the area is productive during passage, as well as winter and summer for some species that breed in and around the farmland. Lastly, because many of the farm areas are private, access is best sought through one of the resident Kuwaiti birders. Visiting birders must excersize extreme caution not to upset the privacy of these private land areas.

Generally the wildlife of the area is poorly studied and documented. 

Visiting birders, naturalists and photographers need to be extra careful and respectful of private farmland property here. Its the owners who allow us naturalists to visit; and who we would like to practice wildlife-friendly farming practices. Local birders have reached-out and requested certain owners for permission on a restricted basis for access by selected birders to ensure that on-going surveys can be conducted.

And even though we have started this post with the capital city, so iconic is this bazaar that it is worth mentioning separately! One of the oldest markets of the country, this was the site of trade before the gulf nation discovered oil. Today, it sells everything that you can think of buying as a souvenir for a loved one—dates, dried fruit, olives, jewelry & even Made-In-China products! Over time, modern buildings have been added to this historical area.

8. Al Shaheed Park

Yet another of the places to visit in Kuwait that deserve a special mention is this urban park, consisting of plenty of green areas (including botanical gardens), a lake, paths, restaurants, and even gift shops & two museums! Once again located in Kuwait City, it is the largest urban park of the country. Opening early morning for joggers & closing by midnight, it houses several elements that depict cutting edge architecture. You can also see 5 sculptures displayed here, which won an ‘Outdoor Sculpture Competition’ that was held in 2013. The thorough maintenance, considering all attention to detail, will blow your mind off!

9. Grand Mosque

One of the finest tourist places in Kuwait , the Grand Mosque attracts travelers from all around the world. As the natives put it, it is one of the many treasures that Kuwait possesses. While officially being the biggest mosque in the country, the Grand Mosque is renowned for having big celebrations, and other religious events here. Covering about 46000 square meters, the mosque is a fine example of the Islamic architectural style and attracts visitors pretty much due to its Persian structural design. Interestingly, Muslims from all around the world gather at the Grand Mosque during the period of Ramadan.

10. Al Ahmadi

One of the finest cities in Kuwait, Al Ahmadi was first founded in 1946 and located in the southern side of the country. The city, in fact, originated with the oil field there. One can find a number of parks here along with the well-renowned Kuwait Oil Company Display Center. Notably, the city has been named after Sheikh Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah. Travelers coming here would find the city to be covered by sand while it serves as a private preserve of the Kuwait Oil Company.

15. National Museum

Designed by French Architect Michel Ecochard and a place that truly represents Kuwaiti Heritage, the National Museum is one of the top Kuwait tourist attractions today and was the former residence of the royal Al Subah family. The museum has three main sections like Archaeology, Heritage, and the Planetarium. One can visit here and find the most amazing collection from the Failika Island. Interestingly, the Failika Island dates back to the Bronze Age.

16. Kuwait House of National Works

There aren't many places in Kuwait that match the importance of the Kuwait House of National Works. One of the most prominent places to visit in the country, this memorial museum takes one back to the period of the first Gulf War in 1990-91. It is an ode to the brave citizens, military, and allied forces that were martyred during the war.

There are many exhibits in the museum that comprise a set of crafted models of the city from the time. These models have recordings both in English and Arabic. Coming to other attractions here, the museum has an invasion tunnel that portrays the story of Saddam's invasion. The tunnel features lights and sound effects that give a sense of drama to the whole scene.

As for the other attractions of the museum, the Kuwait House of National Works even showcases a number of artifacts from the remnants of the war. One can walk through a room and find walls that resonate with the blasts or machine gun fires.

17. Al Sadu House

A different museum from the others, A Sada House has a gorgeous collection of artifacts and antiques. Once upon a time, it used to be a traditional Kuwaiti house nestled close to the national museum on Gulf road. At present, it is an interesting museum that boasts a bedouin style of weaving. It was made to preserve the bedouin crafts and has rooms that present the traditional weaving techniques and their history. The sadu weaves emphasis on the lifestyle of a Bedouin nomad along with aesthetic symmetry. Tourists visiting the museum will discover fine metalwork and embroidery that was used to embellish outfits and looms that wove magic.

18. Seif Palace
