Shaniwar Wada

Probably the most famous place to visit in Pune, Shaniwar Wada can rightly be called the landmark of the city. Dating back to 1736, this palace was built by Bajirao Peshwa I, thus one can consider it an important evidence of the glorious history of Peshwa Rule in Pune. The palace boasts five gateways, nine bastions, fine wooden pillars and lattice work. Aga Khan Palace

History buffs, this is the place for you. Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, this palace is a witness to vital incidents of Indian history. The Aga Khan Palace is an eyewitness to the rescue of famine-stricken locals, the imprisonment of Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu and the death of Mahadev Desai and Kasturba Gandhi. The main palace has been converted into Mahatama National Memorial, where photos and paintings exhibiting the life of Mahatama Gandhi have been kept.

Osho Ashram

Visiting Osho Ashram is all together a different experience. The Ashram is situated inside the Koregaon Park area and is known for offering gala time to the guests. The Ashram is infact a 40 acre meditation resort, where meditation, massages, workshops, theatres and other events keep taking place. One can actually choose between spending time in solitude and interacting with people visiting here from 100 countries. It is a perfect place to relax in Pune.

Sinhagad Fort

It is a sight to cherish! The majestic Sinhagad Fort is perched on one of the isolated cliffs of the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadris. The fort was built two thousand years ago and has many myths and tales attached to it. Although, today the fort lay in ruins, it is certainly one of the best reflections of the glorious period of Pune. Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

One of the most famous temples in Pune and even in Maharashtra, Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple cannot be missed when planning a sightseeing tour in the city. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Ganesha and was built by Dagdusheth Halwai, a pious and honest man. The shrine is so popular that people from all over the country as well as world visit it. The best time to be here would be around Ganesh Festival.

Chaturshringi Temple

Another popular temple in Pune is Chaturshringi, which was built during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The legend has it that there was once was a merchant named Durlabhseth Pitambardas Mahajan who was an ardent devotee of Goddess Chaturshringi. Durlabhseth tried visiting all the temples dedicated to the Goddess but as he grew older he had trouble commuting. One night the Goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to dig at a specific place in North-West of Pune. To his surprise, a natural statue of the Goddess was found here and thus Durlabhseth decided to build a temple here. Therefore, even today, Chaturshringi temple has been of great importance to the locals.

Parvati Hill

An important place of interest in Pune, Parvati Hill is situated at the southern end of the city. The Hill houses four prominent temples of that of Shiva, Ganesh, Vishnu and Kartikeya. The major temple here is called Parvati Temple, which was once a private shrine of the Peshwa rulers. Visitors have to climb 108 unpaved stone steps to reach here and it surely adds to the adventure. The Parvati Museum is a must see here as it houses replicas of ancient paintings and manuscripts.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

This 8 th century rock cut temple is amongst the major attractions in Pune . Carved out of single basalt rock piece, this Pataleshwar Cave Temple is able to grab the attention of many visitors. The temple is said to be built during the Rahtrakuta Era and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga, massive pillars and Nandi Bull are the main attractions of this temple.

Shinde Chhatri

The memorial of Mahadji Shinde, Shinde Chhatri is known for its architectural excellence. A well-preserved structure, Shinde Chhatri has gained the popularity for its fresh Anglo-Rajasthan style of architecture. The main hall has the silver statue of Mahadji; prayer vessels used by the family to propitiate family deity; carvings, paintings and photographs of the Scindia family.

Bund Garden

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

Now, I may have to agree with people who think going to a zoo on a tour is waste of time. BUT, I honestly think that paying a visit to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is absolutely worth it. Yes, I know, the zoo has been in news for its reckless handling of the animals but things have changed. The place looks better and there also have been an increase in the number of animals here. The park is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, a snake park, and a zoo that includes 42-acre Katraj Lake. Animals like Deer, white tiger, tiger, sloth bear and elephants can be seen here. The visitors can enjoy boating in the Katraj Lake.

Another haunt for nature lovers in Pune, Mulshi Dam is situated in the west of the city. The area around the Mulshi Dam has been developed into a tourist destination in Pune. Several resorts have been set adjacent to the Lake, which is formed by the water of Mulshi Dam. Those with interest in nature are going to love this place for the splendid view of Sahyadris it offers. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

Steeped in history, Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is the place that every history buff needs to explore. There are 36 sections in this museum that houses antiques, carved palace doors, pottery, 17th century miniatures, collection of nut crackers, lamps, musical items, hookah pipes, hair drying combs other items from the Mughal and Maratha period.

Drive to Khadakwasla Dam , which is located at a distance of 20kms from Pune city. The area around the dam has become quite popular amongst the tourists due to its picturesque setting. Peacock Bay, Kudje village, Neelkanteshwar, located near Bahuli village and Sinhagad road bordering the dam have become favorite picnic spots for tourists in Pune.

Lohagarh Fort

Lohagarh Fort is another spectacular evidence of the golden Peshwa rule in Pune. Situated about 57kms from Pune on Pune-Lonavala road, the fort seems to have a rich history with rulers of several kingdoms occupying it at different periods of time. Mostly in ruins now, Lohagarh Fort has a charm that no one can deny. The fort overlooks the Pavana Reservoir and makes excellent vantage point for photography.

This is probably one bike trip in Pune that will remain etched in your memory.

Aga Khan Palace

Aga Khan Palace is a glorious mansion built on the banks of Mula river by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892. The total area is of 13 acres, which has a beautiful garden and the palace. The place has an interesting history as Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, and Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu were imprisoned here during the freedom moment. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died here. Today their memorials stand here along with a memorial for Mahatma Gandhi. The halls inside the palace tell the story of Mahatma Gandhi and the time of freedom struggle. Moreover, some of the old items used by Gandhiji are kept as an exhibit. Pataleshwar Cave

Pataleshwar Cave is a cave from the 8th century ie. the  Rashtrakuta  period. It is said to be more than 1300 years old. The cave is a tribute to Hindu God Shiva. It is made of impressive rock-cut pillars. The entire temple is cut out from basalt rock. Inside are three sanctums with Hindu gods – Shivalinga in the centre, Lord Pataleshwar – the Lord of Underworld, Goddess Lakshmi, and Ganpati. Moreover, there is a sculpture depicting – Ram, Lakshman and Sita. In its courtyard is a huge circular Nandi mandapa. The cave has some unfinished carvings too. Located in Kothrud, Joshi’s Museum promises to show you a world where everything is pocket-sized! The museum houses a small city, rails, a circus, swimming pool, and tiny cars. The miniature trains and engines in the museum closely resemble Indian trains and railways. Along with learning about each type of train and engine, your children can watch them in action throughout the day.

History of Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways

It all started when a young boy from Pune found interest in collecting train models. Soon his interest became his obsession, and he invested his entire childhood building miniature models. This young boy was Mr B.S. Joshi, famously known as Bhau Joshi. Bhau, an electrical cum mechanical engineer, was the founder of Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways.

During Diwali festivals, Punekars have a tradition of building miniature forts or Killas that depict the fortress of King Shivaji Maharaj. It’s an integral part of Diwali celebrations for children. In the 80s, when other kids made half-assed attempts to build these Killas, young Bhau Joshi used to build miniature Killas skillfully with lots of movements. For example, he made moving cars and a fire engine that can actually put out a fire. These cars and engines were made of cardboard and controlled by strings. There used to be long queues in Bhau Joshi’s neighbourhood to see his model cars and Killas.

In 1959, Mr Joshi went to London for a job, and while working there, his hobby of collecting small train prototypes got a push. In 1980, he started working on a model that could be taken from town to town as a mobile fair. In 1982, the model was first displayed at the Gokhale Hall in Pune. Later, in 1984 and 1986, it was exhibited in Bombay and Dastur High School in Pune. The final layout of the model, which is now on exhibition at the museum, is the result of 40 years of planning, research, and trials.

During the exhibitions, Bhau Joshi realised that manufacturing mobile models needs lots of expenditure and manpower. Also, getting permission for exhibitions at various locations is an extremely hectic process. Thus, he came up with the idea of a permanent exhibition place, which helped him build the Soudamini Instruments.

In 1991, Bhau Joshi started constructing the Museum hall inside the Soudamini Instruments factory. After that, he put more effort into revamping the old layout and built more detailed work. Later on April 1, 1998, the museum was opened to everyone.

Bhau’s museum is a collection of models imported from Germany and manufactured by the Soudamini factory. It took him almost 40 years of collection and hardwood to put the museum together. Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railway is currently run by his son, Dr Ravi Joshi.

The Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways is located on the first floor of the Soudamini Instruments. The building and stairs leading inside the museum closely resemble the railway platforms in India. Before entering the museum, you’ll see a short passage that looks like a train bogie. And the main museum hall is about 26′ x 26′.

Once you enter the museum hall, you’ll get awestruck by a large moving table with a miniature city on it. Everything in that miniature city can be run by computer or manually. The city has 6 platforms with a fully functional station yard, 3 main lines, cranes, an announcement system, good loading facilities, hump shunting, etc. There are also 65 signals, 10 types of trains, 26 points, fences, and flyovers. All these miniature layouts are completely handmade using chemical etching techniques.

Inside the city model, you can also witness a ghat section for steam trains, a pedestrian bridge connecting three platforms, moving cars, a highway, and a miniature swimming pool with small people swimming. From trees, grass, and benches to street lights, roads, and restaurants, everything you see in a real city can be witnessed in Joshi’s Miniature Museum. There’s also a model of a moving coffee house which goes up and down on a tower. And you can see a fire engine which can actually put out a fire.

Apart from the railway station and restaurants, Bhau Joshi also created a miniature circus. The ceiling of the circus is moving so you can see what show is going on inside. In front of the circus, you can see tents, gardens, playgrounds, Disneyland, moving vehicles, factories, theatres, residents, lakes, hoardings, ropeways, tunnels, and more! Disneyland has various miniature rides like toy trains, ferry wheels, roller coasters, etc. The entire city has over 2000 small human figures. The best part is that all of the figures are in different poses.

Things to do at Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways

If you’re a history lover and interested to know about the history of the Indian railway, Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways is the perfect place to be.

The exhibition starts once everyone gathers inside the museum. Each show lasts for at least 25 minutes and goes along with a pre-recorded commentary. During the show, you can experience a miniature marvel that includes moving trains, cars, and people. You can see various models of trains, for example, steam train, TGV train, Diesel Engine, Rope Railway, Wuppertal Hanging railway, Underground Train, and Funicular Railway.

Another show you can enjoy with your kids is the Night Show of Miniature City. In the show, you’ll witness a night view of this small city. During the night show, the entire lights in the museum hall are turned off, and only the small city’s lights, such as house lamps, street lights, and vehicle lamps, are turned on. You can also see wonderful lightning effects and April Showers at the museum.

You can also plan a school expedition to help students learn about the various applications of mechanical and technical knowledge applications. Also, here kids can learn interesting things about trains and engines and watch them in action.

Entry Fee and Timings of Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways

Tickets at Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways proceed at INR 120 for anyone over the age of 3 years. For kids below 3 years, entry is free.

The Joshi’s Museum of Miniature Railways is open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the place is open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm. And on Sunday, the museum is open from 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

How to Reach Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways

Airport - From the Pune-Lohegaon Airport, Josh’s Museum is only 14.2 km away. You will get plenty of local taxis, rental cabs, and buses from the airport.

Railway Station - Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways is just 8km away from the Pune Railway Station. From Shivaji Nagar Railway Station, the museum is around 5.4 km away. You can book a cab from top car rental companies in Pune or hop on a rickshaw to reach the museum.

Roadway - The museum is situated in the heart of the city. So, it is well connected to the roads. You can easily get taxis, buses, and rickshaws to visit the museum.

Most of these experts are National/International records holder in their respective activities. You can enjoy adventure activities such as Rock Climbing, Rock Rappelling, Flying Fox, Ladder Crossing, Waterfall Trek, Obstacles, Team Games along with delicious food as per the variant selected.

• If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
• If cancellations are made within 0-30 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
• Same Day cancellations are non refundable.
• In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain trips or activities may get cancelled. In such cases operator will try their best to provide an alternate feasible. However a cash refund will not be applicable for the same.

Our favorite activity was rock climbing and rock rappelling it was our first time and would look forward to participating more in this type of thrill adventure form your team. So well organized we were really impressed.

This adventure place was fun and interesting. All the courses were safe as the instructor provided us with safety measures, the foods were very good, and the location was simply beautiful. I would like to recommend this adventure day-out to all who visiting Pune at least you must try once and I can assure you that you would love it.

Super fun in this trip and superb experience, as well as, well arranged and had a great time spend there.

This is a beautiful society. So well designed and maintained so well. I like everything in this society. This society is not so much crowded. No any type of pollution I faced here since I am living here. There is often police patrolling so it is also safe at night. It is also safe for women. All great malls, schools, restaurants are nearby here. The owner is so cooperative and honest.

There are many good restaurants and they are open till late midnight. Once can easily grab a bite in these restaurants. The locality also has pharmacies that are open 24X7 and well equipped hospitals in close range that one can visit in case of an emergency.
