Cruise ships line up at the City Cruise Terminal, Southampton

P&O Cruises and Cunard threaten to fire and rehire more than 900 UK staff

Cruise firms could dismiss crew unless they accept salary cuts and flexible working arrangements

P&O Cruises and fellow cruise firm Cunard have made provision to fire and rehire more than 900 UK-based crew unless they accept salary cuts and more flexible working arrangements.

The affected crew include officers on the British flagship, the luxury ocean liner Queen Mary 2, and nine other ships operated under Carnival UK, which is part of the $18bn-listed Carnival group.

The staff work on ships out of Southampton but are employed via a management company based in Bermuda, with notice of potential redundancies signed off by an operational head based in Mumbai.

On Thursday night a Carnival UK spokesperson said that the firm was “categorically not making any redundancies”. “We will not dismiss and re-engage staff,” they said. “In fact we have significantly increased our headcount across our fleet. This is an annual pay review process with our maritime officers onboard our ships which will ensure alignment. This will empower our staff, deliver the right teams across our fleet and attract and retain talent to work on our ships.”

A total of 919 professional, managerial and technical staff across the 10 cruise ships in Carnival UK and Cunard’s fleet face dismissal in early 2024 unless they agree to changes in terms and conditions that could reduce their annual earnings by up to 20%.

The UK government’s Insolvency Service was notified last week using the HR1 form, used by employers as they are obliged to give officials notice of mass redundancies.

Carnival’s employment firm, Fleet Maritime Services, said on the form: “No redundancies are proposed. Consultations are related to changes in terms and conditions relating to working days and working arrangements.

“Dismissal and re-engagement may be considered if agreement cannot be reached on new terms.”

A consultation with staff representatives about proposed changes only started on 14 November, the day before the form was lodged with government, according to the submission.

Nautilus International, the union for maritime professionals, said it was supporting members affected. Garry Elliot, Nautilus International senior national organiser, said: “We continue to urge Carnival UK to withdraw their threat of fire and rehire and engage in meaningful negotiations.

“We also call on the UK government to learn the lessons from P&O Ferries and outlaw the coercive practice of fire and rehire. Employers cannot be allowed to treat their employees with contempt and force through fundamental changes to terms and conditions by playing with their employees’ livelihoods.”

The move has strong echoes of the employment “scandal” sparked last year by a completely separate firm, P&O Ferries – which, despite the name, is not part of the same group. The cross-Channel ferry operator apparently took advantage of a gap in legislation , sacking almost 800 UK-based seafarers without notice, to hire low-paid agency crew.

after newsletter promotion

P&O Cruises sought to distance itself from this incident in promotional films, while MPs also stressed that the two firms were not the same. P&O Ferries is owned by Dubai-based DP World, while P&O Cruises is part of the British-American Carnival Corporation and plc, incorporated in Panama.

Most of the crew working on the cruise ships are employed via agencies in Asia, particular Mumbai.

P&O Cruises was found in 2012 to have been paying basic salaries of as little as 75p an hour.

Louise Haigh, the shadow secretary of state for transport, said: “History is repeating itself. The lives of hundreds more seafarers are once again being upended by bad bosses who know they can get away with it.

“Ministers have sat on their hands and ignored warning after warning that this would happen again unless they stepped in to change the law. The blame lies with them.”

China and Indonesia would "fully support Palestine's membership" at the UN, the Indonesian foreign minister has said following a meeting with his Chinese counterpart.

The UN's Security Council is expected to vote tomorrow on a draft resolution recommending to the UN General Assembly "the state of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations", diplomats have told Reuters.

The US, which has the power to veto the resolution, has said it is not necessary, arguing that establishing an independent Palestinian state should happen through direct negotiations with Israel.

Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly opposed a two-state solution.

To pass the Security Council, the resolution needs nine out of 15 votes and no vetoes by the US, UK, France, Russia or China. Diplomats say it has the support of 13 council members.

Two-thirds of the General Assembly would then have to approve the move.

The Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, is a non-member observer state at the UN, a position granted by the 193-member General Assembly in 2012.

Google has fired 28 employees who joined protests against a $1.2bn joint contract with Amazon to provide the Israeli government with AI and cloud services, Bloomberg reports.

Demonstrations led by No Tech for Apartheid took place across Google offices in New York City, Seattle, and California on Tuesday over the deal, named Project Nimbus.

Several employees were then put on leave, with Google telling them to keep the matter "as confidential as possible, only disclosing information on a need-to-know basis", according to an email seen by Bloomberg.

After carrying out sackings yesterday, Google said the protestors were "physically impeding other employees' work and preventing them from accessing our facilities", and that they refused "multiple requests to leave the premises".

A worker told Bloomberg the protestors left the building as soon as they were asked and did not obstruct or disrupt anyone else.

Israel attacked Iran's embassy complex in Syria after two months of planning, the New York Times reports , citing two Israeli officials.

Internal Israeli defence records seen by the Times showed the airstrike was approved by the Israeli war cabinet a week beforehand.

The attack aimed to kill Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Iran's Qud's Force commander for Syria and Lebanon, the Israeli officials said.

Publicly, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied it was responsible for the 1 April strike, which Iran said killed seven people including two senior commanders.

The assessments shown in the Israeli records anticipated nothing more than a small-scale response, with one senior Israeli official telling the Times Israel badly miscalculated Iran's reaction.

US officials said Israel had given America only moments notice before carrying out the attack.

When Iran retaliated on Saturday, launching more than 300 drones and missiles, some Israeli leaders argued privately that Israel should hit back immediately, having drawn up plans for widespread strikes on Iran, the report cited Israeli officials as saying.

The UN has launched an appeal for almost £2.3bn to tackle the looming famine in Gaza and to assist Palestinians in the West Bank.

Its Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the sum was needed to help 3.1 million people and "reduce human suffering and prevent further loss of life."

A major chunk of funding - £627m - will be destined for food aid in Gaza and 400,000 people in the West Bank.

A senior UN aid official said on Tuesday that the UN was struggling to prevent famine in Gaza.

Israel is unlikely to launch an attack on Iran until after Passover, ABC News has reported.

The news outlet cited an unnamed senior US official as saying that was the case.

Passover is a major Jewish holiday that celebrates the biblical story of the Israelites' escape from slavery in Egypt.

It begins on Monday and ends after nightfall on 30 April.

The official also said the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other leadership were still on a high state of alert, with some in safe houses and underground facilities.

It comes after Axios cited five Israeli and US sources as saying Israel considered a near-immediate response to Saturday's attack by Iran, but decided against it.

Israel considered conducting retaliatory action on Monday night, before eventually postponing it, the news outlet reported.

Sky News has not been able to verify either report.

Israel's foreign minister has welcomed the news we heard overnight that the European Union leaders have decided to step up sanctions against Iran.

Israel Katz said the decision was an "important step on the way to removing the snake's teeth".

"Thanks to all our friends for their support and assistance. Iran must be stopped now before it is too late."

The EU's move comes after Tehran's missile and drone attack on Israel left world powers desperately scrambling to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The bloc's 27 national leaders condemned the Iranian attack, reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's security and called on all sides to prevent more tensions, including in Lebanon.

Two Hezbollah militants have been killed in Lebanon, the Israel Defence Forces has said.

In a post on Telegram, the Israeli military said it struck targets related to the Lebanese militant group overnight.

Fighter jets hit the "terror targets" in Khiam, including infrastructure and two military structures, it added.

"Furthermore, IDF soldiers fired in order to remove an imminent threat in the area," it said.

"Moreover, an Israel air force aircraft eliminated two Hezbollah terrorists identified in the area or Kfarkela."

The IDF and Hezbollah have regularly exchanged in fire across the border, but attacks have increased since Israel launched its military operation in Gaza.

Hezbollah, like Hamas, is backed by Iran.

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

We're still waiting to see if Israel will respond to Iran's massive aerial assault at the weekend - and what that might look like.

Here are the key events from the past 24 hours to make you aware of:

  • Qatar said it was re-assessing its role as a mediator in the conflict as talks hit a stumbling block;
  • At least 14 Israeli soldiers were injured by Hezbollah airstrikes;
  • The former director of intelligence at the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, said targeting nuclear facilities in Iran was among the options on the table as Israel decides how to respond to Saturday's attack;
  • Lord Cameron said during a visit to Israel it was "clear" that Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond;
  • Meanwhile, Iran's president warned the "tiniest move" against the country would bring a "fierce" response, according to state media;
  • On aid for Gaza, the UN said Israel denied "more than 40%" of its aid delivery requests to northern parts of the enclave last week;
  • It emerged that a single Israeli shell destroyed more than 4,000 embryos when it struck Gaza's largest fertility clinic in December.

We'll be back later this morning with more news and analysis from the Middle East.

European Union leaders have decided to step up sanctions against Iran.

The move comes after Tehran's missile and drone attack on Israel left world powers desperately scrambling to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The EU's 27 national leaders met in Brussels earlier - the first time the group has met since Saturday's attack.

They condemned the Iranian attack, reaffirmed their commitment to Israel's security and called on all sides to prevent more tensions, including in Lebanon.

"The European Union will take further restrictive measures against Iran, notably in relation to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles," they said in a joint statement.

Game Recap: Baseball | Apr 16

Baseball Cruises to Midweek Win Over Monmouth

PISCATAWAY, N.J. –  Rutgers baseball picked up a dominant 19-4 victory over Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Bainton Field.  The Scarlet Knights (23-13) took a 3-1 lead in the second and scored eight more in fifth to defeat the Hawks (9-21). While Monmouth was able to get ahead early with a solo home run in the top of the first, Rutgers scored three in the second to take control of the game.  The bottom of the RU order loaded the bases on three straight singles. Cameron Love then drove in a pair with a single into left and Josh Kuroda-Grauer added another with a sac fly to center.  Rutgers starter Jordan Falco bounced back after the early run and threw scoreless second and third innings.  Sonny Fauci would pitch two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three with one walk to earn the win.  The Scarlet Knights exploded for eight runs in the fifth thanks to six extra-base hits. After Love and Trevor Cohen reached to start the frame, Kuroda-Grauer tripled into the right field corner to score them both. Pete Duroher and Jackson Natili followed with back-to-back solo home runs, which pushed the score to 8-1. Cohen singled in two more with the bases loaded later in the inning and Kuroda-Grauer added on one more with a single that made it 11-1.  After the teams traded runs in the sixth, Rutgers scored another four in the seventh and three in the eighth to jump out to a 19-2 advantage.  In the seventh, Ty Doucette singled into left to score one and then Tony Santa Maria launched a three-run home run to add three more, his 10th of the season which leads the team.  An RBI single from Santa Maria in the eighth and a pair of RBI doubles from Jordan Sweeney and Hugh Pinkney made it 19-2.  While the Hawks added a pair in the ninth, Justin Sweeney finished off the victory on the mound for RU.  Kuroda-Grauer went 4-for-5 with four RBIs on the day, recording his fifth straight game with at least three hits and raising his batting average to .455. Hugh Pinkney went 4-for-6 with two doubles, setting a career high with his four hits.  Santa Maria also added three hits, picking up four RBIs and scoring three times.  Rutgers returns to action for a three-game road series against Iowa, with game one set for 7 p.m. on Friday night.
