Åhman and Hellvig take gold at the Finals in Doha
Beach Volleyball News
Beach Pro Tour
The last event of the 2023 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour calendar, The Finals, held in Doha, Qatar, reflected a scene that repeated throughout the entire season on Saturday, at the conclusion of the event, with Europe having more teams on the podium than any other continent.
Led by two-time European champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden, who took the title in the men’s event, two other duos from the continent also took medals home from Qatar – Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, who fell to the Swedes in the men’s gold medal match, and Germans Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann, who took silver among the women.
Åhman and Hellvig ended their most prolific season to date, in which they not only won their second-straight European title but also took gold in three Elite16 events, with another big win, prevailing among the top ten men’s duos of the season in Doha.
The Swedes were dominant in the gold medal match, beating Mol and Sørum in two sets (21-16, 21-17) to secure the title.
“It’s unbelievable, we fought so hard for it. We had played Norway in pool play and they crushed us, so it feels good to beat them now and take the title. They’re an incredible team, we knew we had to play at our best to even have a chance.”
Five other European teams appeared in the event, with Czechia’s Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner and Italy’s Paolo Nicolai/Samuele Cottafava ranking fifth, Germany’s Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler and Poland’s Michal Bryl/Bartosz Łosiak finishing seventh and Italy’s Adrian Carambula/Alex Ranghieri getting ninth.
In the women’s event, Müller and Tillmann had a brilliant campaign, advancing all the way to the gold medal match, but ended up falling to Americans Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss in two sets (21-17, 21-14) and settling for silver.
“I am very happy and proud of their performance in the last event of the season against the best teams in the world. It’s great reward for all the hard work they put it this year.”
Also representing Europe in Doha were Latvia’s Tina Graudina/Anastasija Samoilova and the Netherlands’ Katja Stam/Raisa Schoon, who were seventh, besides Switzerland’s Nina Brunner/Tanja Hüberli, who couldn’t play due to an injury and ranked ninth.
The Finals concluded the 2023 season of the Beach Pro Tour. The calendar for the 2024 season should be announced over the next few weeks.

Doha set to host Volleyball Beach Pro Tour Finals
Doha, 6 December 2023 - Doha braces itself for the last and most prestigious event of the 2023 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour season. 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams are set to compete for champions-of-the-champions honours at The Finals in the Qatari capital from Wednesday, December 6, through Saturday, December 9.
This is the second edition of The Finals. The inaugural 2022 event was also held in Doha in late January of this year. Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway and United States’ Sara Hughes & Kelly Cheng, who later on triumphed as the 2023 world champions, claimed the honours of the first-ever Beach Pro Tour Finals winners in history. The men’s podium was completed by Poland’s Michal Bryl & Bartosz Losiak and Italy’s Paolo Nicolai & Samuele Cottafava, while the ladies’ silver and bronze went to Brazil’s Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda) & Ana Patricia Ramos and the Netherlands’ Katja Stam & Raisa Schoon, respectively. All of these teams are returning to Doha to play at The Finals 2023 again.
It will be the 13th time Doha is hosting a world-level beach volleyball event. The first nine were stops on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, starting with the men-only Doha Open in 2014 and ending with the double-gender Doha 4-star in 2021. The next three were Beach Pro Tour events: the Doha Challenge in May 2022, the Doha Finals in January 2023 and the Doha Elite16 in February 2023.
That last tournament some 10 months ago was also won by Mol & Sorum in the men’s competition, with Sweden’s David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig collecting the silver and Italy’s Adrian Carambula & Alex Ranghieri picking up the bronze. On the women’s side, Stam & Schoon triumphed as winners, while Switzerland’s Nina Brunner & Tanja Huberli and Australia’s Taliqua Clancy & Mariafe Artacho Del Solar kept them company on the podium. All of these pairs will also hit the sand courts in Doha again this week.
The 10 teams per gender will be split into two round-robin pools of five, with the pool winners advancing directly to the semifinals, while the pool runners-up and the third-placed teams move on to the quarterfinals in the six-team single-elimination playoff brackets. A total prize purse of US$ 800,000 (US$ 400,000 per gender) will be at stake as the battles at Aspire Park unfold on two courts over the four competition days, climaxing with the semifinals and the medal matches on Saturday.
The first whistle will blow at 13:00 local time (10:00 UTC) on Wednesday, when Germany’s Cinja Tillmann & Svenja Muller take on defending Finals champions and reigning world champions Hughes & Cheng on one of the courts, and last week’s Nuvali Challenge winners Anastasija Samoilova & Tina Graudina of Latvia challenge the world’s number one team Ana Patricia & Duda on the other. These will be the first games in the women’s Pool A, which also features Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes & Brandie Wilkerson.
An hour later, Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallists Mariafe & Clancy will take to the court for their match against European champions Huberli & Brunner, while USA’s Taryn Kloth & Kristen Nuss face Brazil’s Taina Bigi & Victoria Lopes in the other women’s Pool B opening game. Stam & Schoon are the fifth team in that pool.
The guys will get into action at 15:00 (12:00) with the Pool A fixtures between reigning world champions Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner of Czechia and Cottafava & Nicolai, and between the Qatari pairing of Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan and Losiak & Bryl. USA’s Miles Partain & Andrew Benesh will join in as of the second leg later on Wednesday.
The men’s Pool B will serve off at 16:00 (13:00) with a super clash between Mol & Sorum and Brazil’s Andre Stein & George Wanderley on centre court, while Germany’s Clemens Wickler & Nils Ehlers take on European champions Ahman & Hellvig. Carambula & Ranghieri will be the last team to join the action as they open their campaign in the last centre court match of the first competition day, against the Swedes, starting at 21:00 (18:00).

Tough start in Doha for USA at season-ending Beach Pro Tour Finals
Travis Mewhirter
December 6, 2023
The final event of the season, which is, in some ways — see: financial, with $150,000 to the winning team — the biggest of the 2023 year, could hardly have started worse for the USA.
The only victory in the five matches played by American teams on Wednesday in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Finals in Doha, Qatar, came via forfeit, as Switzerland’s Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner bowed out with a medical injury in their first match.
Other than that?
Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes fell to Germany’s Cinja Tillmann and Svenja Muller (17-21, 22-20, 15-13) in the morning match, allowing a 7-0 run in the third set to flip what once had been a commanding 8-4 lead.
Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth , beneficiaries of the Swiss forfeit in the evening rounds, were stunned by Brazilian late entrants Taina Silva and Victoria Lopes (21-16, 21-18), who are coming off a bronze medal at last weekend’s Nuvali Challenge in the Philippines.
While Nuss and Kloth were able to take the afternoon off, Cheng and Hughes returned to the court and fell once more, to Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes (23-21, 21-16).
To cap a fruitless day, Andy Benesh and Miles Partain , playing their first tournament since the World Championships in early October, fell in three to the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner (26-24, 17-21, 15-12).
To be clear: There is no shame in any loss at the Beach Pro Tour Finals. The field is an assemblage of the top 10 teams in the world, based on the best eight finishes for each team in this calendar year. Benesh and Partain’s loss came at the hands of the World Champions. There is no hanging of the head in the aftermath of that.
But the road gets no easier from here.
Awaiting Benesh and Partain are Poland’s Bartosz Losiak and Michal Bryl, bronze medalists at the World Championships; Qatar’s Cherif Samba and Ahmed Tijan, the 2021 Olympic bronze medalists; and Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Sam Cottafava, who upset Perusic and Schweiner and are coming off a silver medal at the Joao Pessoa Elite16.
Any win is a tremendous win.
No loss is a bad loss.
For Cheng and Hughes, too, the path forward is a difficult one.
Their only match on Thursday will be a rematch of the World Championship finals , against Brazil’s Ana Patricia and Duda, the current world No. 1 who claimed both of their matches on Wednesday and now top Pool A. On Friday, Cheng and Hughes will meet Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, the Latvian duo who won the first Beach Pro Tour gold medals of their careers last weekend at the Nuvali Challenge.
Potentially boding well for Cheng and Hughes is that they’ve been here before. In January for the 2022 Beach Pro Tour Finals they also dropped the opening two matches of pool play. It worked out well enough, with five straight victories, gold medals around their necks, and a $150,000 check to take home. Finishing No. 1 in pool is desirable, of course, for it comes with a bye into the semifinals. But advancing is the top priority when it comes to the pool stages, and Cheng and Hughes are still more than capable.
For Nuss and Kloth, Switzerland’s medical withdrawal is helpful. They have three matches remaining: Thursday morning against Australians Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy in a rematch of the World Championship bronze-medal match, and later that evening against the Netherlands’ Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon in the first meeting between the two teams.
There are no Olympic points on the line, only prestige, and a mighty big check.
