Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour With New Found Glory

Motion city soundtrack, the starting line, the get up kids to support.

The All-American Rejects are excited to announce their highly anticipated return to the stage with the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour , their first headlining tour in nearly a decade. Produced by Live Nation, the 27-city tour kicks off on August 11 at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa , FL making stops across the U.S. in Boston, MA , Nashville, TN , Los Angeles, CA , and more before wrapping up in Oklahoma City, OK at Zoo Amphitheatre on October 14 .

Speaking on their upcoming dates, the band said: “ We’ve been trying to get out on the road in a proper way for the last few years. We finally realized after playing When We Were Young that the world was ready to pull out of their “guilty pleasure chest” and celebrate the soundtrack of their youth. When New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack and The Get Up Kids signed on, the feeling was ‘This is a celebration of summers gone by.’ It’s time to embrace the cumulative joy of growing up. First we got you to “Swing Swing,” then we became your “Dirty Little Secret,” and you thought “It Would End Tonight” so we could “Move Along,” then we “Gave You Hell” for denying the fact that we’re the band you listened to your entire lives, whether you liked it or not.”

Vocalist/bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler were best friends in high school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, when they founded The All-American Rejects in 1999. And while their emo-pop band has traveled far and wide and sold millions of albums in the years since, their music retains an irrepressible energy and infectious scrappiness, two qualities that seem quintessentially teenaged in the best sense. They’ve also always understood the lasting value of big sticky melodies, a lesson they absorbed from a wide range of early influences that included Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, as well as emo forebears such as Weezer and Jimmy Eat World. Already fully realized on their 2002 indie hit “Swing, Swing,” The All-American Rejects’ catchy mix of arena rock, power pop, and emo soon landed them a deal with DreamWorks. Later hits like 2005’s “Dirty Little Secret” and 2008’s “Gives You Hell”—which hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart—confirmed the wide appeal of Ritter and Wheeler’s sometimes snarky and always punchy songwriting.

All-American Rejects Announce 2023 ‘Wet Hot All-American Summer’ Tour

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

The All-American Rejects want their fans to bring their kids to the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour , their first headlining tour in a decade, because the best way to avoid being swallowed up by nostalgia is to fully lean into it.

“We started with a swing swing, then we were your dirty little secret, and then you thought it would end tonight so we could move along, then we gave you too much hell for denying the fact that we’re the band you listened to your entire lives whether you liked it or not,” frontman Tyson Ritter said in a statement, running through some of the band’s biggest hits. “Bring your kids this time… so they can be just like their parents.”

The tour is scheduled to begin on Aug. 11 in Tampa and will wrap on Oct. 14 in Oklahoma City. The band will make stops in Raleigh, Philadelphia, Boston, Indianapolis, Nashville, Bakersfield, San Diego, Houston, and more cities. Tickets for the tour go on sale beginning Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. local time via the official All-American Rejects website .

Looks like last year's When We Were Young Festival is inspiring more pop punk dreams to come true, beyond just booting up a second year. The All-American Rejects have announced a 27-city tour with support from New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack and The Get Up Kids. The Wet Hot All American Summer Tour kicks off August 11 in Tampa Florida and runs through October 14 in Oklahoma City.

In a press release, the band said: “ We’ve been trying to get out on the road in a proper way for the last few years. Oi Oi OI! It's the cockney rejects!

Pioneers of the Oi music genre, and therefore massively influential in the breakthrough of the punk scene. Formed in 1978, in 1980 this band hit the charts with an almighty slap. They shook the streets of London and became widely recognised punk stars. They've charted 10 rowdy ruffian albums and still today they are touring with their immensely successful live performances. They are brutal in their lyrics, aggressively chanting at the audience, boisterously parading the stage and transporting the crowd back in time to the working class 80's.

Nothing beats a classic rock and roll gig. But specifically punk, the Cockney Rejects put on a ruthlessly savage attack as a show. Of course their gigs wouldn't go down the same without their biggest hit thrown at you. Cockney Rejects are widely established due to their dedication and homage to their favourite football team West Ham United. The band wrote a number one hit called 'I'm forever blowing bubbles,' and devoted it to their football team. Now the song is amplified out before the start of every home fixture held at Upton Park, West Ham's home stadium, and is sang with such passion from the home crowd that it strikes fear into opposing fans and teams and it's all thanks to the Cocnkey Rejects. The band are full of punk history and are still one of the best punk bands to see live today.

Scott Drew turns down Kentucky: Baylor coach will remain with Bears after passing on Wildcats' offer

Drew has decided to remain at baylor, passing on a lucrative offer to replace john calipari.

Colgate v Baylor

Baylor coach Scott Drew opted to pass on Kentucky's offer on Thursday after conferring with his family, sources told CBS Sports. It's the second major opening Drew has turned down this cycle; he was Louisville's top choice in March but decided to stay with the Bears after the school privately rallied a significant uptick in NIL resources.

"In our program, we strive to put Jesus first, then others, then ourselves. We truly believe God has called my family and I to continue our work here at Baylor, surrounded by the best people and community anyone could be blessed to have" Drew said in a statement . "We are grateful for the support of [athletic director] Mack Rhoades, President [Linda] Livingstone and the entire Baylor family, and we look forward to working together to more championships to Waco."

Drew's decision boosts a Baylor program all the more. The Bears have one of the best winning percentages in the sport over the past five years and are looking to reload following a 24-11 season that ended with a second-round loss in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Baylor's head man staying put will also keep the Bears near the top of the Big 12 hierarchy. The league expands to 16 teams this year with the additions of Arizona , Arizona State , Colorado and Utah . The Bears have a top-10 incoming recruiting class , according to 247Sports, led by five-star prospect and potential No. 1 pick VJ Edgecombe, which should keep them in the mix for conference title contention and beyond.

Drew also passed on an NIL plan at Kentucky that was poised to approach $6 million in the the next 12 months, according to a source.

So, Kentucky's search continues. It remains to be seen whether Billy Donovan would be a viable target; he's still coaching the Chicago Bulls through next week at minimum. UConn's Dan Hurley has been publicly tabbed as a potential target as well, but the two-time national champion -- a Northeast native and East Coast lifer -- has given zero indication he would consider leaving the best program in the sport for Lexington.

"Yeah, yeah, I don't think that's a concern," Hurley said Monday night after his Huskies won their second consecutive national championship when asked about whether he'd entertain leaving the school. "My wife, you should have her answer that."

Drew has accumulated a 446-244 record at Baylor since taking over the program in 2003, building it into a juggernaut after taking the job when it was on the brink of collapsing as a program under scandal. The program has enjoyed numerous firsts under his watch over the last two decades, which includes five Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights and a 2021 Final Four appearance that finished with its first-ever men's basketball national championship.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. The Latest | Israel says it opened new aid crossing into hard-hit northern Gaza

Israel said Friday it had opened a new crossing for aid trucks into hard-hit northern Gaza as it ramps up humanitarian deliveries to the besieged enclave. However, the United Nations says the surge of aid is not being felt in Gaza because of persistent distribution difficulties inside the war-torn territory.

Six months of fighting in Gaza have pushed the besieged Palestinian enclave into deepening a humanitarian crisis, with more than 1 million people on the brink of starvation.

In the occupied West Bank, an Israeli raid killed two Palestinians, including a Hamas militant. Later Friday, dozens of angry Israeli settlers rampaged through a West Bank village, killing one Palestinian man and wounding 25 others while shooting and setting houses and cars on fire.

Over 460 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis in the West Bank since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Israeli bombardments and ground offensives in Gaza have killed more than 33,600 Palestinians and wounded over 76,200, the Health Ministry said Friday. The ministry doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its tally, but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

BIDEN SAYS U.S. IS ‘DEVOTED’ TO DEFENDING ISRAEL, AND ‘IRAN WILL NOT SUCCEED’

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden says the U.S. is “devoted” to defending Israel and “Iran will not succeed.”

Israel is bracing for a possible Iranian attack after an airstrike killed two Iranian generals in Syria last week. Iran has blamed Israel for the airstrike and vowed revenge. Israel has not commented on the strike.

Biden answered a couple of shouted questions at the White House on Friday, after delivering a virtual speech to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Convention on racial justice in New York.

Asked what his message was for Iran, the president's only reply was: “Don’t.”

He was asked about the possibility of deploying additional U.S. troops to the Middle East and said, “We are devoted to the defense of Israel. We will support Israel.”

“We will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed,” Biden added. He ignored a question about what would trigger a direct U.S. military response.

Asked how imminent an Iranian attack on Israel was, Biden said he didn’t want to get into secure information, “but my expectation is sooner than later.”

The apparent Israeli airstrike and promised Iranian retaliation has raised concerns about the U.S. being pulled into deeper regional conflict.

Since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began six months ago, there have been near-daily exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group along the Israel-Lebanon border.

U.S. officials have recorded more than 150 attacks by Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria on U.S. forces at bases in those countries since war began on Oct. 7.

One attack in late January killed three U.S. service members in Jordan. In retaliation, the U.S. launched a massive air assault, hitting more than 85 targets at seven locations in Iraq and Syria. There have been no publicly reported attacks on U.S. troops in the region since that response.

ISRAELI MILITARY SAYS IT'S PREPARED FOR A POSSIBLE IRANIAN ATTACK

JERUSALEM — Israel’s military says it has prepared plans to respond to a possible Iranian attack.

The army’s spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said late Friday that Israel is ready for a “wide variety of scenarios” that include both defensive and offensive actions. He also said that Israel’s military chief has completed a situation assessment with the head of the U.S. Central Command, Gen. Erik Kurilla, who is visiting Israel.

“Our defenses are ready and know how to deal with every threat separately,” Hagari told reporters. “Next to defense, we are prepared to attack. We are ready to attack with a range of capabilities and we know how to act and protect the people of Israel.”

Israel has been bracing for a possible Iranian attack since an airstrike killed two Iranian generals in the Syrian capital of Damascus last week.

Iran has blamed Israel for the airstrike and vowed revenge. Israel has not commented on the strike.

Iran has a number of proxy groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen that are all capable of striking Israel. Iran also possesses long-range missiles that can reach Israel. Israeli leaders have threatened to strike Iran directly if it attacks, and President Joe Biden has said the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad.

Hagari said the visit by Kurilla is meant to “guarantee that the coordination between us is tight.”

ISRAELI SETTLERS IN WEST BANK RAMPAGE THROUGH PALESTINIAN VILLAGE; 1 DEAD AND 18 WOUNDED

JERUSALEM — Dozens of Israeli settlers rampaged through a Palestinian village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday, Palestinian medics and an Israeli rights group said. Palestinian health officials said one Palestinian was killed and 18 were wounded.

Settlers stormed the village of al-Mughayyir in search of a missing 14-year-old Israeli boy, according to rights group Yesh Din. The group said that settlers were shooting and setting houses on fire in the village.

Videos posted to X, formerly Twitter, by the rights group showed dark clouds of smoke billowing from burning cars as gunshots rang out.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said that one man arrived dead at a hospital, but did not provide more information. The ministry said 18 injured Palestinians also arrived at hospitals. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said eight of the wounded were shot by live fire from settlers.

Israel’s military said it was looking into the reports.

The episode comes as tensions flare in the West Bank, where over 460 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis since Oct. 7.

ISRAEL OPENS NEW AID TRUCK CROSSING INTO NORTH GAZA

JERUSALEM — Israel said Friday it had opened a new crossing for aid trucks into northern Gaza as its efforts to ramp up aid to the besieged enclave came under criticism from a top United Nations official.

Israel, facing mounting U.S. pressure to improve the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, has pledged this week to dramatically increase aid to the strip.

The military said that trucks carrying food passed the newly opened northern crossing Thursday. It said the aid was inspected at its Kerem Shalom crossing near the Egyptian border before being transported inside Israel to the crossing. The new system is meant as an alternative to the challenging and dangerous process of transporting aid from northern to southern Gaza.

In the coming days, Israel says it will also open its port in the southern city of Ashdod for more aid shipments. Most aid is currently delivered by land from neighboring Egypt.

COGAT, the Israeli military body in charge of Palestinian civilian affairs, said Friday it has sent 1,903 trucks into Gaza over the last week, with 221 truckloads of aid reaching the north over that same timeframe.

However, the U.N. says the surge of aid is not being felt in Gaza because difficulties persist in distributing the aid.

“It’s very easy for Israel to say, ‘We’ve sent you 1,000 trucks so please deliver them inside Gaza,’” said Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories.

The U.N. says aid distribution within Gaza is dangerous and mired in long holdups at inspection checkpoints. Bringing aid to the north of the territory — where the U.N. says famine is near — is particularly difficult, McGoldrick said, with only one or two roads north open at a given time.

Several aid organizations have suspended their convoys north after an Israeli strike on a World Central Kitchen aid mission killed seven aid workers.

BRITISH-PALESTINIAN SURGEON SAYS GERMANY BLOCKED HIM FROM ENTERING COUNTRY TO JOIN PRO-PALESTINIAN CONFERENCE

BERLIN — A prominent British-Palestinian surgeon who volunteered in Gaza hospitals during the first weeks of the Israel-Hamas war said he was denied entry into Germany on Friday, where he was due to take part in a pro-Palestinian conference.

Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta said he arrived at Berlin airport on Friday morning before being stopped at passport control where he was held for several hours and then told he had to return to the U.K.

Police at the airport said he was refused entry due to “the safety of the people at the conference and public order,” Abu Sitta told The Associated Press by phone.

The ban will last until Sunday, covering the duration of the Berlin conference he was to attend, he said. The gathering, entitled the Palestine Congress, was to discuss a range of topics including German arms shipments to Israel and solidarity with what organizers called the Palestinian struggle.

Police at Berlin airport could not immediately be reached for comment.

Germany has traditionally held a staunchly pro-Israel position, and during the Gaza war emerged as one of Israel’s fiercest supporters, even amid growing international outrage over the soaring Palestinian death toll.

German authorities have repeatedly clamped down on displays of support for Palestinians.

Abu Sitta has worked during multiple conflicts in the Palestinian territories, beginning in the late 1980s during the first Palestinian uprising. He has also worked in other conflict zones, including in Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

He spent 44 days in Gaza hospitals during the current war as a volunteer for Doctors Without Borders.

Throughout his most-recent stint in Gaza, he gave numerous interviews to international media outlets about the deteriorating humanitarian and health situation in the besieged enclave.

EUROPEAN COUNCIL SANCTIONS THREE PALESTINIAN MILITANT GROUPS OVER THEIR ROLE IN OCT. 7 ATTACKS

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The European Council has slapped sanctions on three Palestinian militant organizations, citing their role in the “brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks” on Oct. 7 against Israel.

The sanctions will freeze the groups' assets and prohibit anyone from giving funding or economic resources to the groups or for their benefit, either directly or indirectly, the council said in a statement Friday.

The newly sanctioned groups are Hamas' military wing, the Qassam Brigades, as well as Hamas’ elite Nukhba forces and the Al-Quds Brigades, the military arm of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad entered southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages.

“Hamas and other armed groups must immediately grant humanitarian access to all remaining hostages,” the European Council statement said.

The U.S. State Department, the European Union and other Western countries already consider Hamas and Islamic Jihad as terrorist groups. The European Council is the body that brings together the 28 EU countries’ leaders.

BODIES OF 89 PEOPLE KILLED IN GAZA TAKEN TO HOSPITALS, OFFICIALS SAY

RAFAH, Gaza Strip — Gaza health officials said Friday that 89 bodies were taken to hospitals over the past 24 hours, raising the Palestinian death toll in the territory to 33,634 since the Israel-Hamas war erupted more than six months ago.

The total number of wounded has reached 76,214, said the ministry, which is part of a Hamas government that continues to operate in some parts of Gaza.

The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and militants in its count, but says that two-thirds of the dead are women and children. It says many bodies across devastated Gaza remain under the rubble.

Israel’s military says it has killed thousands of Hamas militants since the start of the war. The war was triggered by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel in which the militants killed about 1,200 people and took some 250 hostages.

2 PALESTINIANS ARE KILLED IN THE ISRAELI-OCCUPIED WEST BANK

JERUSALEM — Two Palestinians were killed early Friday in confrontations with Israeli forces in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Palestinian medics and the military said. The Islamic militant group Hamas said one of those killed was a local commander.

The raid took place in the town of Tubas and the adjacent refugee camp of al-Faraa. The Palestine Red Crescent Society confirmed the two deaths and said three people were wounded, including one who sustained serious injuries.

The military said the target of the raid was Mohammed Daraghmeh, a local Hamas commander. It said Daraghmeh was killed in a shootout with Israeli soldiers who discovered weapons in his car. The army alleged that Daraghmeh was planning attacks on Israeli targets, but provided no evidence.

In subsequent confrontations between soldiers and armed Palestinians, a second Palestinian was killed Friday. The army said assailants also hurled explosives at soldiers.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said one of its ambulances was fired at by Israeli forces as medics were trying to treat one of the wounded.

Palestinian health officials say 460 Palestinians, including several dozen children and teens, have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, triggered by a deadly Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7. Most were killed in confrontations with Israeli forces who have stepped up raids in the West Bank in recent months, targeting suspected militants. Several other Palestinians have been killed in attacks by militant Israeli settlers.

FRANCE WARNS CITIZENS AGAINST TRAVELING TO ISRAEL, IRAN, LEBANON, AND PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES

PARIS — France’s foreign ministry has warned citizens against traveling to Israel, Palestinian territories, Iran and Lebanon in the coming days due to a heightened risk of military escalation in the Middle East.

Iran has been threatening to avenge the deaths of two of its generals killed in an airstrike in the Syrian capital, Damascus, last week. Tehran blames Israel for the strike, although Israel has not commented. Israel has called up additional defense units in anticipation of an attack by either Iran or the many proxy groups it supports in the region.

Faced with risks of a military escalation, the French foreign ministry called on citizens in a statement Friday “to completely refrain” from traveling to the three Middle Eastern countries and the Palestinian territories. The ministry also ordered families of diplomats in Tehran to return to France and suspended all foreign ministry sanctioned missions to Israel, Lebanon, Iran and the Palestinian territories after a crisis meeting Friday, the statement said.

SPAIN AND NORWAY SUPPORT RECOGNIZING A PALESTINIAN STATE

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that Spain has “publicly committed to recognizing Palestine as a state as soon as possible when the conditions are appropriate and in a way that can have the most positive impact to the peace process.”

Sánchez was in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, as part of a tour that also includes Ireland, to push for peace in Gaza and seek support for recognition of Palestine. His Norwegian counterpart, Jonas Gahr Støre, said that “Norway stands ready to recognize the state of Palestine and to recognize this place, appropriate place in the United Nations.”

The traditional position of the United States and European allies had been that recognition of a Palestinian state should come at the end of successful negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. However, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, some European leaders have called for such recognition as an interim step that would create a political horizon for Palestinians, especially at a time when Israel’s right-wing government is adamantly opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state. Sanchez has been one of the most vocal advocates of early recognition.

Barcelona court rejects appeal to overturn bail for Alves

A Barcelona court on Wednesday rejected an appeal to overturn bail that was granted to former Brazil footballer Dani Alves .

He was released from prison on March 25 after making the €1 million ($1.08m) bail payment required as he awaits the result of an appeal to his rape conviction.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Alves, 40, had been kept in a prison in Barcelona since January 2023.

The former Barcelona star was sentenced to 4½ years in prison on Feb. 22 after Catalonia's top court found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.

Spain's state Prosecutors' Office in Barcelona and the victim appealed against the sentence while they also asked the court to overturn bail, saying they believed the risk of Alves fleeing increased after he was found guilty.

However, the court dismissed appeals filed by the Prosecutor's Office and the victim opposing bail.

In addition to posting bail, Alves, who handed over his Brazilian and Spanish passports, has to report to a Barcelona court on a weekly basis.

He is prohibited from leaving the country.

Alves' lawyers are seeking his acquittal while prosecutors want his prison sentence increased to nine years.

The victim's lawyer wants him jailed for 12 years.

No date has been set for the appeal trial.

Judge rejects Beadles' second attempt to block Nevada law protecting election workers

A federal judge found the plaintiffs had not shown they faced a realistic risk of being prosecuted if they did not plan to harass election workers..

rejects tour

A federal judge shot down for the second time a Robert Beadles lawsuit to block a Nevada law protecting election workers from threats and harassment.

U.S. District Judge Cristina Silva had rejected a similar lawsuit in October because she found that Beadles – a Washoe County Republican – and his three other plaintiffs didn’t have standing to bring the case.

But she left open the door for them to amend their original complaint and try again with new facts showing a realistic risk that they could be prosecuted under the Election Worker Protection Act.

Beadles, Susan Vanness, Alexandrea Slack and Martin Waldman – represented by Las Vegas-based attorney Sigal Chattah – failed again.

“I thus find that amendment here would not be fruitful,” Judge Silva wrote in her decision Monday. “For that reason, I dismiss the complaint with prejudice.”

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

"With prejudice" means an amended version of this lawsuit or a similar one cannot be filed in the future.

Reaction to the decision

“I’m grateful to Judge Silva for dismissing the case against Gov. Lombardo and me with prejudice,” Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar said in a statement Wednesday. The secretary of state oversees elections.

“The Election Worker Protection Act was brought by a Democratic Secretary of State, passed with unanimous bipartisan support, and was signed by a Republican Governor. Nevada has said loud and clear: threats and harassment against election workers will not stand.”

Aguilar said it’s important that the people behind the state’s election processes feel safe.

“As we approach the June Primary and November Presidential Election," he said, "our local election officials and poll workers will be protected when they go to work and at home thanks to this bill.”

Chattah told the RGJ she did not have any comment.

What the election-worker-protection lawsuit was about

The election worker protection law – also known as Senate Bill 406 – criminalizes using or threatening to use force, intimidation, coercion, violence, restraint or undue influence with an intent to interfere with or retaliate against elections officials performing elections duties.

Beadles and the other plaintiffs argued the law was too vague and overbroad so that they might be criminally prosecuted for legal behavior.

Because of this, they said in their lawsuit, they will not participate as election observers out of fear of prosecution – and this is a “chilling” of their constitutional rights.

If they can show there’s a realistic risk of them being prosecuted despite having no plans to harass election workers, then they would have standing and the lawsuit could proceed.

Judge Silva said they hadn’t done this, again.

“Plaintiffs argue that their fear of prosecution arises from the potential for misinterpretation of their legitimate actions,” she wrote (emphasis in the original).

That’s not good enough, she found.

“Put simply, plaintiffs fail to provide factual allegations suggesting that the threat of plaintiffs’ prosecution … is credible or reasonably founded in fact,” Judge Silva wrote. “Because I find that plaintiffs have failed to allege an injury in fact, I find that there is no standing and thus grant defendants’ motion to dismiss the complaint.”

A look at other election lawsuits

Her decision is part of a string of failed election-related lawsuits brought by Beadles.

A Washoe County district court judge dismissed a Beadles lawsuit seeking greater access for vote-count observers . The judge said the details of election observation were a matter for the Legislature to figure out, not the courts.

Beadles also filed a lawsuit against Washoe County officials to force an airing of his election grievances.  He won a change of venue to Carson City, and a district judge there dismissed the suit.

The judge ordered he pay attorney fees in order to “deter frivolous or vexatious claims” that overburden the courts.

Beadles appealed the decision to the Nevada Supreme Court. He made a filing last month trying to get the court to move faster.

The Supreme Court denied his motion to make a decision “within the coming week” and responded, “As previously stated, this court will expedite this matter to the extent its docket allows."

Beadles wrote on his Operation Sunlight blog, “Let’s see if the Supreme Court of Nevada does what’s right and follows the law. If they do, we all win; if they don’t, well, Nevada is no longer part of America.”

Why Xi Jinping Is Meeting With Taiwan’s Ex-President

China is using talks between its top leader and Ma Ying-jeou to signal a willingness to engage with Taiwan — but only on its terms.

A large screen shows two men in suits shaking hands.

By Chris Buckley

Reporting from Taipei, Taiwan

When China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and then-President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan shook hands in Singapore back in 2015, they each extolled their meeting — the first top-level talks between the rival governments — as a breakthrough that could pave the way to a durable peace , ending decades of enmity.

But on Wednesday, as the two men met again in Beijing, the prospects for an amicable settlement over Taiwan’s future seemed more distant than ever.

Mr. Ma, who pursued closer engagement with China during his eight years in office, is no longer president of Taiwan. Fewer and fewer Taiwanese people now share his belief that Taiwan must see its future as a part of a greater China.

Since Mr. Ma left office in 2016, Mr. Xi has frozen high-level contacts with Taiwan, sought to isolate it on the global stage and tried to intimidate it with a tightening military presence around the island. Mr. Xi is profoundly suspicious of Taiwan’s current leadership, which has sought to assert the sovereignty of the island democracy.

The meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing was the first time that a Chinese leader has met a former president of Taiwan on Chinese soil. Mr. Xi and Mr. Ma held a handshake for around 15 seconds and smiled for the cameras. They then sat at a long table like two statesman entering negotiations, even though Mr. Ma has long been out of power.

In opening remarks, Mr. Xi praised Mr. Ma as a patriot who had promoted “peaceful development” across the Taiwan Strait, and he pressed Beijing’s position that Taiwan must accept that it is a part of China.

“Compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese,” Mr. Xi said. “The difference in systems does not alter the objective fact that the two sides of the strait are of one country and one nation.”

For Beijing, Mr. Xi’s show of amity with Mr. Ma was part of a strategy to set its terms for dealing with Taiwan’s next leader: the president-elect, Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing describes as a dangerous separatist.

In recent months, China has signaled how it could squeeze Mr. Lai’s administration — militarily, economically and diplomatically. It has brushed off Mr. Lai’s offers to talk as insincere.

On the other hand, Beijing has shown that it will court friendlier Taiwanese politicians, like Mr. Ma, who endorse the framework for relations that it demands: that both sides accept that they are part of one China, even if they differ on what that means. Mr. Xi noted that condition — called the “1992 Consensus” because of its year of origin — in his comments to Mr. Ma, and Mr. Ma also reaffirmed it.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, which oversees the island’s policy toward China, said that Mr. Xi’s language about the conditions for engagement was an “attempt to blot out our national sovereignty.”

China’s “immediate focus is to push the incoming Lai administration to adopt a more accommodating political stance on cross-strait relations,” said Amanda Hsiao , the senior analyst for China with the Crisis Group, an organization that seeks to defuse wars and crises. “Ma’s visit helps to underscore Beijing’s position that cross-strait dialogue is conditioned on acceptance of the idea that the two sides of the strait belong to ‘one China.’”

Taiwan and China have been at odds since the Communist revolution of 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist troops fled to the island and made it their redoubt. Over time, the Nationalists stopped being Beijing’s archenemy and became its preferred dialogue partner in Taiwan, particularly during Mr. Ma’s time in office. The two sides built economic ties and edged toward talks over their political status and future, culminating in Mr. Ma’s 2015 meeting with Mr. Xi.

But the Nationalists have lost the last three presidential elections to the Democratic Progressive Party, which has cast itself as a defender of Taiwan’s democracy and rejects Beijing’s claim to the island. Since Mr. Lai was elected in January, defeating a colleague of Mr. Ma, China has stepped up its pressure.

In January, it moved to peel away one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies: Nauru , which had been one of the dozen or so states that still maintain formal relations with the island.

In February, Beijing sent coast guard ships to patrol the waters near a Taiwanese-controlled island off mainland China, after two Chinese fishermen died nearby while fleeing a Taiwanese coast guard vessel. China continues to buzz the skies near Taiwan with military planes almost daily, and many analysts expect China’s People’s Liberation Army to stage major exercises before, and especially after, Mr. Lai’s inauguration in May.

Beijing has also tried to use Mr. Ma’s trip to undercut Mr. Lai’s victory in the eyes of the domestic Chinese audience, and in particular the country’s fervent nationalists, said Chien-wen Kou , a professor at National Chengchi University in Taipei who studies the Chinese Communist Party.

“The chances of restoring official dialogue are not high,” he said. “Inviting Ma Ying-jeou to visit China is also intended to demonstrate that Lai Ching-te, in the Chinese Communist Party’s telling, represents only a minority of public opinion in Taiwan.”

Tensions with Taiwan also influence China’s relations with the United States, the most important backer of Taiwan’s security. In a phone call with President Biden last week, Mr. Xi reiterated that Taiwan was of the utmost importance to Beijing, describing it as “the first red line that must not be stepped over in China-U.S. relations,” according to the official Chinese summary of their call .

“China will not sit back passively in the face of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and external encouragement and support for them,” Mr. Xi said .

By contrast, Chinese state media have highlighted Mr. Ma’s tour to make the case that Beijing has plenty of friends in Taiwan. The reports on Mr. Ma’s 11-day trip to China, with a delegation of Taiwanese students, have covered stops at heritage sites, with the students touring the Forbidden City and taking selfies on the Great Wall.

Mr. Ma’s itinerary is centered on one theme: that Taiwan is part of a greater Chinese nation, united by culture and history, if not politics. In northwest China, Mr. Ma paid his respects at a memorial to the Yellow Emperor , the fabled ancestor of the Han people, the dominant ethnic group in China and Taiwan.

Especially in retirement, Mr. Ma has become a vocal proponent of the view that Taiwan is historically and culturally part of China, and should accept that closer ties with the mainland are part of its destiny.

“If war breaks out between the two sides of the strait, that would put an unbearable burden on the Chinese nation,” Mr. Ma said to Mr. Xi. “The Chinese people on both sides of the Strait absolutely have the wisdom to peacefully handle the various disputes and avoid going toward conflict.”

Mr. Ma said Taiwan should accept the notion that the two sides are part of “one China.”

That view, however, does not reflect broader Taiwanese sentiment.

Most Taiwanese people reject the idea of unification with China, and accept their island democracy’s ambiguous status quo of being self-ruled but not recognized as an independent country by most governments.

People in Taiwan increasingly describe themselves as exclusively Taiwanese , instead of Chinese. Even within Mr. Ma’s Nationalist Party, many politicians, including its recent presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, have been notably more wary of China.

Judge Rejects ‘Top Gun’ Copyright Claim From Author’s Heirs

Top Gun Maverick

A judge has ruled that “ Top Gun : Maverick” did not infringe on an article about Navy fighter pilots that inspired the original 1986 film.

Paramount bought the rights to the article, “Top Guns,” from author Ehud Yonay in May 1983. But the studio did not re-acquire the rights, which had reverted to Yonay’s widow and son, before releasing the sequel in 2022. “Top Gun: Maverick” grossed $1.5 billion at the box office.

The heirs sued , alleging that the sequel infringed on the copyright in Yonay’s original work. But in a ruling on Friday, Judge Percy Anderson found that any similarities are not protected creative expression under copyright law.

Popular on Variety

In a brief response, Paramount said it was happy with the ruling.

“We are pleased that the court recognized that plaintiffs’ claims were completely without merit,” a studio spokesperson said.

The heirs’ attorney, Marc Toberoff, vowed to appeal to the 9th Circuit.

“Paramount’s actions speak  much louder  than its counsel’s words,” Toberoff said via email. “In 1983, soon after Ehud Yonay’s cinematic Top Guns Story appeared in California Magazine, Paramount literally raced to lock up the Story’s copyright to the exclusion of other Studios… Yet once Yonay’s widow and son exercised the rights Congress gave them in the Copyright Act to reclaim the author’s captivating Story, Paramount hand-waived them away exclaiming ‘What copyright?’ It’s just not a good look.”

Yonay’s article focused on two pilots, Yogi and Possum, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School in San Diego. The lawsuit argued that Yonay infused the story with cinematic touches and vivid imagery, and claimed that its creative expression is entitled to the protection of copyright.

But in his 14-page ruling , Anderson noted that the article is non-fiction, and that simply reporting facts — including dialogue between real people — is not protectable expression.

The judge also noted the many differences between the movie and the article, including the plot, dialogue and setting, and ultimately concluded that the works are not substantially similar.

The heirs also argued that “Top Gun: Maverick” failed to credit Yonay, as required by his original contract. But the judge found that Paramount had no obligation to credit him, as the contract had been terminated and the sequel was not produced under that agreement.

Anderson previously denied Paramount’s motion to dismiss the case, finding there was enough substance to the claim to proceed to discovery.

Both sides then retained experts who each praised the article — but in ways designed to help one side or the other.

The plaintiffs called upon Henry Bean, a former adjunct professor and the screenwriter of thrillers including “Deep Cover” and “Basic Instinct 2,” who argued that both “Top Gun” films owe a tremendous literary debt to Yonay’s work.

In his report , he stated that the films are “‘about’ a very special ‘world,’ and that world, and our ability to nonetheless relate to it, comes from the story. Indeed it was created by the story.”

Paramount, meanwhile, enlisted Andrew Craig, a former Top Gun instructor and now a commanding officer in the Navy Reserve. Craig opined that the article was an accurate and factual description of life at the Navy’s Top Gun school and the capabilities of fighter aircraft — thereby undermining its protection as a creative work.

In his expert report , Craig said he was inspired to become a fighter pilot by watching the original movie on VHS.

“I was about seven years old then, and from that moment, becoming a Navy fighter pilot and attending TOPGUN was what every single fiber of my being was focused on,” Craig wrote.

The plaintiffs argued that Craig was not qualified to assess the article’s literary qualities. But in his ruling, Anderson wrote that Craig’s opinions were useful and relevant. The judge excluded Bean’s analysis, finding that it was a subjective, rather than objective, comparison between the two works.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday Moscow is in dialogue with with the United States on the issue of bringing home jailed Americans Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich and the Kremlin hopes to “find a solution,” even though “it’s not easy.”

Putin spoke about Whelan and Gershkovich during his year-end news conference in response to a question about a recent offer the Biden administration made to secure the two men’s release. The U.S. State Department reported it earlier this month, without offering details , and said Russia rejected it.

“We have contacts on this matter with our American partners, there’s a dialogue on this issue. It’s not easy, I won’t go into details right now. But in general, it seems to me that we’re speaking a language each of us understands,” Putin said.

“I hope we will find a solution,” he continued. “But, I repeat, the American side must hear us and make a decision that will satisfy the Russian side as well.”

Speaking to reporters in Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the U.S. has “put multiple offers on the table,” including “one significant offer that we made as recently as a few weeks ago.”

In this photo released by Xinhua News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, and Chinese President Xi Jinping meets at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on April 9, 2024. China has surged sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology that Moscow in turn is using to produce missiles, tanks, aircraft and other weaponry. That's according to two senior Biden administration officials who discussed the sensitive findings on the condition of anonymity. Russia's microelectronics came from China, which Russia has used missiles, tanks and aircraft. (Li Xueren/Xinhua via AP)

“We have seen those offers rejected every time by the Russian government,” he said.

Miller said Washington would welcome Russia engaging seriously in talks that would lead to the release of Gershkovich and Whelan but that “so far we’ve seen them refuse to take us up on our proposals, and we hope that they will change the way they handle this going forward.”

Whelan, a corporate security executive from Michigan, has been jailed in Russia since his December 2018 arrest on espionage-related charges that both he and the U.S. government dispute. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was detained in March while on a reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) east of Moscow. He was accused of espionage — Russia’s Federal Security Service alleged that the reporter, “acting on the instructions of the American side, collected information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” He has been behind bars ever since.

The Lefortovo District Court in Moscow on Nov. 28 ruled to extend his detention until the end of January, and the appeal Gershkovich has filed against that ruling was rejected by the Moscow City Court at a hearing Thursday.

Gershkovich and the Journal deny the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained. Russian authorities haven’t detailed any evidence to support the espionage charges.

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be charged with espionage in Russia since 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. He is being held at Moscow’s Lefortovo prison, notorious for its harsh conditions.

Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips after U.S.-Russian tensions soared when Russia sent troops into Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said it will consider a swap for Gershkovich only after a verdict in his trial. In Russia, espionage trials can last for more than a year.

Lynne Tracy, the U.S. ambassador to Russia, attended the court hearing for Gershkovich’s appeal on Thursday and told reporters that “Evan’s ordeal has now stretched on for over 250 days. His life has been put on hold for over eight months for a crime he didn’t commit.”

“Although Evan appeared as sharp and focused as ever today in the courtroom, it is not acceptable that Russian authorities have chosen to use him as a political pawn,” Tracy said after the hearing.
