Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Exclusively inclusive river cruising

Along the river Rhine… where mountains rise abruptly from the water's edge, ancient castles perch aloft, keeping watch over comings and goings, gentle valleys and ancient winelands lure, spas give respite, cathedrals speak to powerful times, plains and woods catch the eye, and a river travels, connecting centuries of history, cities of the arts and crossroads of thought.

Tauck exclusive – evening at schloss ehreshoven, enjoy an elegant dinner and tour at schloss ehreshoven.

Built in the 14th century and later expanded in the grand style of a Baroque manor house, Schloss Ehreshoven is surrounded by gracious 18th-century French gardens and a castle park. For nearly a century the castle has been the heart of a charitable foundation whose main mission includes providing a home for unmarried aristocratic ladies without means in their golden years. Frequently used as a location for movies and TV shows, the Schloss provides an elegant setting for Tauck's exclusive cocktail reception and dinner, hosted by a member of the family.

By cog railway to Mt. Pilatus

To and from mt. pilatus by cogwheel train or gondola.

Since the 1880s, the world's steepest cogwheel train has been bringing travelers up and down Mt. Pilatus in Switzerland, climbing nearly 7,000 ft. from the edge of Lake Lucerne to the mountain's summit (Oberhaupt). On your visit to Lucerne, you'll take this thrilling ride that has you traveling upward at a 48° angle. Or, if the weather is uncooperative, you may make the ascent by gondola (cable car). Either way, getting there is definitely part of the fun, as you enjoy soaking up views of Alpine meadows and mountain streams, goats and flowers.

Old World Europe – Rhine River cruises

The officers and crew were totally outstanding professionals. we were treated like royalty. the tour directors were exceptionally knowledgeable, personable and great.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any country visited for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations – International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. MS Inspire is registered in Valletta Malta. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Please refer to the Tauck Travel Protection Product section above for details on the coverage we can offer you.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the Netherlands, Germany, France or Switzerland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands, Germany, France and  Switzerland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for you to visit.

While a cruise from Amsterdam to Basel is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the cruise has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and Emerald Deck; there is not elevator access to the Sun Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A light jacket or sweater for the sun deck is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin.

Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7  suites feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your cruise:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard the ship
  • Comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at www.necessarygear.com as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Viking Rhine River Cruise | Amsterdam To Basel

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Pinterest image: photo of cruise scenes with caption reading

Cruising the Rhine River with Viking River Cruises is a popular option for exploring Europe in style. See what we thought about our scenic 12-day Viking Rhine River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel.

Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

In the grand scheme of things, people can be separated into two categories – cruise people and everyone else. We always placed ourselves in the latter category.

We eschewed cruises as being nice for people who prefer more structure on their vacations and prefer the safety of guided trips with strict itineraries. We prefer immersive experiences that bring us into the heart of a country’s culture.

That being said, we were thrilled when we received an unexpected offer from Viking River Cruise. Needless to say, it was an offer that we couldn’t refuse. This was our chance to try a certain ease of travel and to see what it’s like to experience a trip with guides and planned meals.

Pro Tip Don’t cruise without travel insurance !

Viking Eir - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As part of Viking’s generous offer, we were able to select a European riverboat cruise that appealed to us. After pouring over the many options for cruises in Europe outlined on the Viking website and studying the photos and videos, we ended up selecting the Rhineland Discovery cruise.

This 12-day Amsterdam to Basel river cruise starts with two city destinations (Bruges and Amsterdam ) before cruising up the Rhine with stops in Rhine River cities like Kinderdijk, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Heidelberg, Strasbourg , Breisach and finally Basel .

Sure, Viking is reputed to have some of the world’s best river cruises and the Viking Rhine river cruise sounds wonderful. But what did we really think? We share our thoughts in the following Viking River Cruise review.

What We Loved About Our Viking Rhine River Cruise

Let’s be real. It’s hard to not enjoy a luxury cruise on the Viking Eir, a longboat with 95 staterooms and four decks. Food is plentiful and cooked to order, and the German beer onboard is some of the best in the world. Coffee flows all day long on a Viking river cruise ship, and the crew’s main mission is to make everybody happy.

Visiting Five Countries Without Lugging Our Bags

Rhineland Discovery - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As independent travelers, we lug around our bags – a lot. As a result, we sometimes suffer from tired backs and sore feet.

What a treat it was to not have to worry about luggage for twelve straight days! This may not seem like a big deal, but it was a game-changer for us.

As an extra bonus, we loved unpacking our bags and feeling ‘at home’ during the length of the Viking Rhine River cruise. Since we use packing cubes when we travel, it only took us a few minutes to settle into the room and start enjoying the cruise.

Room With A View And Amenities

Comfortable Room - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We weren’t sure what to expect from the room even though we had looked at various YouTube videos for a sneak preview. Our room turned out to be downright spacious with a comfortable bed, a full range of movies available on-demand and wonderful bathroom products that got replenished on a daily basis. We were pleasantly surprised by the room’s private balcony with a table and chairs for two, which made it feel even more spacious.

True confession – we didn’t use the balcony much once we discovered that the best view in our room was from the bed. It turns out that there’s not much better in life than lying in bed and watching the Rhine current stream gently next to the trees and hills of Western Europe.

Awesome Crew

Awesome Crew with Beer - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We consider ourselves to be low maintenance travelers who don’t need a lot of assistance, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t appreciate excellent service. And that’s exactly what we got from the international crew while cruising the Rhine with Viking.

Empty beer stein? Not for long. Fresh fruit in our cabin? You betcha.

This crew was highly attentive without being intrusive, and it was our pleasure to tip them at the end of the cruise.

Food on a Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

Food on our Viking Rhine River Cruise was varied and plentiful.

We appreciated the fancy, multi-course dinners and the big, hearty lunches served in the dining room, though we mostly opted for the simpler, more casual meals available on the Aquavit Terrace. However, we liked breakfast best of all.

The range of breakfast foods ran the gamut from healthy fruit and yogurt to more decadent options. Passing on the menu items, we stuck to the breakfast buffet where we enjoyed cheeses, meats and other regional delicacies.

The one and only thing missing was Nutella, but not for long. The attentive staff was kind enough to share their private Nutella stash with us once they realized we were true fans of the chocolate hazelnut spread.

Fun Excursions

Viking offers many excursions on its Rhineland Discovery cruise, many of which are at no additional cost for participants. The free Viking tours are good – mostly slow-paced walking/bus tours with lots of information and minimal pressure.

However, the optional excursions are the ones that truly wowed us with their passionate guides and small group format. These tours really offer travelers an intimate chance to experience many of the cultural delights that Europe has to offer.

It may seem like a hardship to spend the extra cash after already plunking down a bunch of dough for the cruise itself, but these are sincere, honest excursions that will detour you from the more touristic itineraries. These were our three favorite excursions:

Cologne’s Beer Culture Dinner Tour

Cologne Beer Crawl Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

As we learned over dinner at a brauhaus that dates back to 1858, Cologne locals never eat while drinking. They only drink while eating.

Living like locals was not a problem for us during this excursion where we drank an endless number of small glasses of chilled Kölsch beer at no less than four different family-owned pubs each oozing with Köln culture. We even learned how to toast like a local during this fun pub crawl.

We now like to clink the bottom of our glasses and say ‘Prost!’ even though we’re no longer in Cologne. In addition to drinking beer, we also enjoyed soaking up Cologne’s history through this walking tour of the town’s narrow, lively, rebuilt North German streets.

Taste Of The Best Of Alsace

Strasbourg Food Tour Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We were pleased to get our first taste of Strasbourg during this full-day excursion which served as an introduction for our future stay in the fairytale Alsatian city in France.

The informative tour guide from Food and City Tours Strasbourg introduced us to a variety of local fare starting with kugelhopf and continuing with chocolate, cheese, baguettes, wine, flamenkuche and finally pain d’epices , a local pastry similar to what Americans call gingerbread.

Highlight of this excursion? For us, it was the picnic-style lunch at Oenosphère where we sampled excellent local wines from nearby vineyards along with an assortment of amazing French cheeses and charcuterie.

Black Forest Hike & Farm Visit

Black Forest Excursion - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We pinched ourselves as we ate tasty German food and drank local beer with a view of the Black Forest. Was this real life or a dream?

Viking’s local tour guide took us on a winding journey where we visited old and new farms, hiked up forest trails and drank schnapps in addition to enjoying lunch with a view at a local eating hall. We saw so much that we felt like we were on a Black Forest road trip , if only for the day.

This excursion took us away from the standard cuckoo clock shops and allowed us to see the magnificent, lush, green Schwarzwald hills along with a glimpse into the day-to-day struggles of old German culture. We also enjoyed visiting a modern German farm complete with its on-site schnapps distillery not to mention adorable goats and cows.

The Rhine Itself

Castle View - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

We mainly chose the Rhineland Discovery cruise for the opportunity to cruise the Rhine and see Rhine River castles sprinkled along its verdant shore. Despite some cloudy and rainy weather, the view did not disappoint.

Seriously, the castles just kept coming as we lounged on the wide-open sundeck of our longship.

We toasted and drank hearty, dark Kostrizer beers as we sailed along the Middle Rhine River streaming by the famous Lorelei rock and oh-so-many castles. We were so inspired by the fabulous views and tasty beers that we plan to return and spend one week in the Rhine Valley so that we can explore the area more fully.

What We Didn’t Love So Much

Feeling rushed.

As full-time travelers and influencers, we usually travel slowly with a week or even a month in each location. Though it was great to hit five countries in twelve days, it wasn’t so great to have to leave each one so quickly.

Sometimes, when traveling in Europe, we just like to slow down, plant ourselves at an outdoor cafe and soak in the atmosphere. Some people like this quicker style of travel, but it’s not our preferred approach.

Spotty Internet

As internet junkies, it was a bit stressful to have spotty internet during our Viking Rhine getaway. Though out of the ship’s control and likely common on river cruises on the Rhine, the internet (or lack thereof) was a bit of a bummer.

Final Thoughts on Our Viking Rhine River Cruise

Kitchen Staff - Rhine Cruise with Viking River Cruises

Clearly, we loved a lot more about the Rhine cruise than we didn’t love. Does this mean that we’ve crossed over to being cruise people? Well, we wouldn’t go that far, but we’re very open to taking another cruise to help us with that transition.

You should check out Viking Cruises when you're ready to try a river cruise. They really do a nice job with all the details and the overall experience.

Wow, your trip looked amazing! I agree with everyone here about not being a super cruise-y person because I put a high value on my independence, but I went on a narrow boat trip in England when I was younger and really loved it, so I'm definitely interested in going on another river cruise in the future. I came across this tour site a while back that lets you compare different river cruise companies and trips and it's super cool- ever since I have been toying with the idea of booking a cruise and I think you guys just sold me on it haha!

This cruise looks amazing and I think you picked a good one (I lived in Germany for 3 years and loved it). I'd be freaking out about the internet too, but I'd just go eat some of that yummy food to take my mind off of it lol!

A Viking Rhine River Cruise Review: Basel To Amsterdam

Published July 23, 2022

After two long years of pandemic restrictions, Europe is fully open again! I’m lucky to have an extended family of fellow travel enthusiasts, and we’ve all been looking forward to a reunion vacation in Western Europe for a while now! A Viking River cruise seemed like the perfect offering for a group of eight people spanning three generations . This post is a review of my time on the Viking Hermod as it sailed down the Rhine.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Viking offers various Rhine River cruise itineraries, and the one we booked was called the “ Rhine Getaway .” As of summer 2022, this cruise is eight days long and spans four countries: Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands . We traveled from Basel to Amsterdam, but it can be booked in the opposite direction as well.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

This post is a review of this particular Rhine River cruise. But on a side note, this was also my first time cruising ! If you’re interested in learning about what it was like to experience Viking River Cruises as a first-time cruise passenger, check out my separate post [coming soon]!

Day trip itinerary.

The first half of this post is a review of the Rhine Getaway ports of call . I liked all of the cities we stopped in, but some were more impressive than others. To learn more, read on! To skip down to the second half of this post (a review of the ship and its amenities), click here .

Day 1: Boarding in Basel 🇨🇭

This cruise began in  Basel , a quaint little town in Switzerland right on the border of both Germany and France. If you can spend a day or two in Basel before your cruise, I highly recommend it. We booked a walking tour with a local guide (independent of Viking), and I’m really glad we did.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Viking allowed us to board the Hermod in the early afternoon, which gave us plenty of time to get acquainted with the layout of the ship. Our first dinner was served, and finally we were off in the early evening. We passed through our first of many  river locks  on this night, which is one of the most noteworthy aspects of a Rhine River cruise.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

If you’re wondering how we made it to Basel, we flew from Chicago into Zürich and then booked a private car transfer. Zürich Airport is the nearest major international airport to Basel, and the drive is about an hour. There are also frequent trains that run between Switzerland’s largest city and its gateway to the Rhine.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Day 2: Breisach 🇩🇪

The Hermod pulled into its first port of call very early in the morning, which meant we had a full day to explore  Breisach , a small village in Germany. I actually decided to skip the included tour (a bus trip to the Black Forest) in the morning and walk across the French border to the village of  Neuf-Brisach . I did this completely on my own; it wasn’t a part of the Viking itinerary at all.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Neuf-Brisach is a sleepy little French town that is surrounded on all sides by a visually stunning series of fortified walls . These walls were designed by French architect  Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban  to help protect border outposts from invasion. You can’t make out the geometry of the walled city from the ground level, but you can explore the city streets and get some sense of their architecture.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

In the afternoon, I went back to Breisach and explored its most famous landmark: the  Breisacher Münster St. Stephan , a beautiful brown church that towers over the rest of the town.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The interior of the Breisacher Münster is interesting, but my favorite part of this cathedral is its view from the top of the hill overlooking the village.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Apart from the church, Breisach feels pretty touristy. If you have extra time and want to walk around the town, feel free to. But if you don’t have time or want to rest on the ship instead, you probably won’t miss out on too much.

Day 3: Strasbourg 🇫🇷

Strasbourg is a fascinating city that’s much larger than Breisach. Due to its  location on the Rhine , Strasbourg has a unique mix of French and German cultural elements . It’s also home to a number of European Union institutions, although the Viking itinerary doesn’t include any tours to these government offices. They are clustered in an outlying district of the city.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Instead, we explored Strasbourg’s historic center, based mostly on Grande Île. Here you’ll find the famous Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg , a staggering gothic cathedral that was actually the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874!

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The other area I really liked in Strasbourg was  Petite-France . This tiny neighborhood is split up by canals that are lined with gorgeous half-timbered homes (the iconic style of German architecture with wood beams on the exterior). We walked through here on our guided tour, and I came back afterwards to enjoy the views for a bit longer.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Strasbourg was probably my favorite day trip on our cruise, so I’ve written a separate blog post about the city. Check it out using the image link below!

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Day 4: Speyer and Rüdesheim am Rhein 🇩🇪

This was my least favorite day of the cruise, mainly because we only had a few hours in both Speyer and Rüdesheim . I feel like we did get to see slightly more of the former than the latter, but both stops were rushed.

Speyer is a small city  on the western bank of the Rhine . Some notable landmarks include the Dom zu Speyer (Speyer Cathedral) and the Altpörtel (Old Gate) directly west of there. The two are connected by the short Maximilianstraße, which serves as the main street in the historic district.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Viking offered a short included tour, then we had about an hour or so to explore on our own. There are some other interesting churches a little further inland, or you could check out the many side alleys that branch off of the Maximilianstraße.

Speyer seemed like an interesting town. I would’ve enjoyed spending more time there. However, as I mentioned above, this is only a half-day stop. Before lunch, we met in the Domplatz and boarded buses that brought us back to the ship. We sailed for a couple hours before making our second stop of the day in…

Rüdesheim am Rhein

At this point in the cruise, the Rhine starts to become much more scenic. Beautiful villages and vineyards can be seen in all directions.  Rüdesheim  is a touristy town known for its wineries and historic center, called the Drosselgasse . Viking doesn’t offer an included tour here, so I explored on my own. However, since we docked in the late afternoon, time felt even more limited here than in Speyer.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

I took a short walk through the Drosselgasse, but I was much more intrigued by all the hilly vineyards overlooking the town. There’s even a chairlift that goes up, hinting that the views up there would be good! I walked up the Oberstraße, which turns into the Germaniastraße. Finally, I turned left onto  this paved trail . The panoramic views were indeed incredible!

Day 5: Cruise through the Rhine Gorge; Stop in Koblenz 🇩🇪

As you leave Rüdesheim, the Rhine River goes from picturesque to spectacular. This day of voyaging through the Rhine Valley is the centerpiece of the entire trip . The surrounding landscape becomes more dramatic. I loved seeing the patchwork of vineyards on the steep mountainsides, but the coolest part of the day is seeing all the castles.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

There are so many of them! You truly pass one castle every few minutes once you enter the Rhine Gorge. Our cruise Program Director also provided a running commentary on all of the things we were seeing as we sailed by. There’s something incredible about seeing these archaic stone structures from various angles as you move along the water.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Since we spent the first half of Day 5 cruising, the city of  Koblenz  was another half-day stop. However, our time here didn’t feel as rushed as the whirlwind tours on Day 4. Koblenz is a tourist hub that’s noticeably bigger than Speyer and Rüdesheim. I walked all over the Altstadt (Old Town), which is right next to the Viking River Cruises Dock.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The other main activity in Koblenz is taking the cable car to the other side of the river. Here you’ll find  Festung Ehrenbreitstein , a sprawling nineteenth century fortress that overlooks the town. Visiting the fortress was interesting, but there didn’t seem to be much signage in English, so I don’t feel like I learned a lot about its history while I was there.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

One other noteworthy attraction on the southern edge of the Altstadt is  Kurfürstliches Schloss Koblenz . This ornate white palace is surrounded by impeccably maintained gardens that seem to serve as a public square for the city.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Day 6: Cologne (Köln) 🇩🇪

Cologne is the largest city this cruise stops in, so there wasn’t enough time to explore all that I wanted to. With that said, we at least had a full day docked here. The included Viking tour served as a brief introduction to the riverfront and Kölner Dom , the city’s massive iconic cathedral. After that, we had the rest of the day to explore on our own.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

I thought the main sanctuary of the cathedral was stunning, but I actually didn’t really like climbing the church tower . The views from the top were fine but not as stunning as some of the other panoramic views I saw on this cruise (e.g. in Breisach or Strasbourg). More importantly, the climb is essentially one long spiral staircase – with visitors going both directions on it! It felt kind of dangerous. Frankly, being on a spiral staircase for that long with only the occasional narrow gothic window was disorienting and dizzying. If you want to climb a church tower, I suggest going up to the top of the Notre-Dame in Strasbourg instead.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

After visiting the cathedral, I walked across the Hohenzollernbrücke , which is one of the most notable “love lock” bridges in Europe. Yes, I know this is a trend that’s swept almost the entire world, but the number of locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge is still a sight to behold.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The last thing I did in Cologne was visit the Museum Ludwig . It was hosting a fascinating temporary exhibit featuring the works of  Isamu Noguchi . I’m not the biggest museum enthusiast, but the Ludwig ended up being very captivating.

Day 7: Cruise through the Dutch Countryside; Stop in Kinderdijk 🇳🇱

In all honesty, the Rhine (which turns into the Waal) is less scenic in the Netherlands than it is in Germany. You’re no longer surrounded by hills, vineyards, and castles. Instead, the riverbanks are flat and sandy here.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Our final shore excursion ended up being a really fascinating one: a guided tour of  Kinderdijk , a ‎UNESCO World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Rotterdam famous for its windmills. Our tour guide did an excellent job of introducing us to the history and purpose of mills in the Netherlands.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The landscape here is so pretty, and one of the highlights of this visit was being able to see the inside of a mill. All in all, a short visit to Kinderdijk was a great way to wrap up our final full day on the Viking Hermod.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Day 8: Disembark in Amsterdam 🇳🇱

The Netherlands is a small country, and Kinderdijk is only about 95 kilometers (59 miles) away from Amsterdam. As such, the Hermod was already passing through Utrecht by bedtime. We docked at Amsterdam very early in the morning on our final day.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

There were no day tours of Amsterdam organized by Viking on Day 8, but we were allowed to stay on the boat until the late afternoon (with lunch included). However, we did have to vacate our staterooms by 8:00 a.m. so that the cleaning crew could start preparing for the next cruise.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

After checking out, guests are free to go on their way. I assume that most people flew out of Amsterdam within a day or two of ending the cruise. However, we stayed for five extra days in Amsterdam and met up with a few more family members there! I had mixed feelings about this bustling Dutch metropolis, which I’ve written about in a separate blog post.

Cruise Review

Now that you’ve seen the itinerary for the Rhine Getaway, the second half of this post will include some information about the actual cruising experience on Viking.

If you’re considering booking this cruise for yourself, you might be wondering: what is the Rhine River actually like between Basel and Amsterdam? Well, in my opinion it seemed to have three distinct sections. From Basel until Speyer (Day 1 to Day 4), the Rhine feels very industrial . It’s lined by factories, and to be honest, the river is not amazing here (although the cities along it are). Luckily, the boat sailed at night through the Upper Rhine, so it’s not like we really missed out on much.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

From Speyer to Cologne (Day 4 to Day 6), the Rhine River is incredibly scenic . Viking did a great job of scheduling so that passengers could enjoy the view from the boat during the day on this portion of the trip. The vineyards, villages, and castles of the Middle Rhine are undoubtedly the river’s most unique offerings.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

In the Netherlands, the Rhine (or Waal) has a rural vibe to it. We passed cows cooling off in the shallow riverbanks, a few small Dutch villages, and not much else until we approached Amsterdam. The Lower Rhine is not as industrial as the Upper Rhine, and it’s not as picturesque as the Middle Rhine.

The most noteworthy thing about this cruise ship is its capacity: only about 200 passengers . There are four levels, and each room has a window. The ship has one single dining room that can accommodate all passengers at one time, an indoor lounge, a terrace, plus an open-air deck on top that runs the length of the ship.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The meals on our Viking Cruise were consistently amazing ! I really looked forward to coming back on board after each excursion or tour to enjoy whatever was being served that day.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

What’s more, Viking offered specialties from each region we were passing through. I loved the fact that I got to try Swiss, German, French, and Dutch food all onboard! They also have a permanent menu that includes classics like Caesar salad, steak, and burgers, but I ordered most of my meals from their rotating menu.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

The Viking breakfast buffet is also excellent! The omelette station is absolutely worth waiting in line for, plus it moves along fairly quickly.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Of course, you could always eat at local restaurants while you’re exploring the cities along the Rhine. We did that once or twice, but the food on the ship was so delicious that I rarely wanted to pass it up.

Should you get the drink package?

You’ll have to make this decision for yourself, but beer and wine are included with each meal even if you don’t purchase the unlimited drink package. I did the math, and you’d basically have to drink two additional cocktails each day (outside of lunch and dinner) to make the package worthwhile. I enjoy drinking to be sure, but I would typically have wine with my meals and limit myself to one cocktail per day. My total bar tab came out to be about 90 euro for the entire trip.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Like the food, all of the alcoholic drinks on this cruise were expertly crafted. Everything tasted great, and they were never watered down or too strong. They even made a great White Russian, which is one of my favorite cocktails!

At every port of call, Viking offered one included (free) tour. These tended to be walking tours that lasted about two hours and introduced guests to the various cities. In general, I’d say these tours were pretty good. However, if you’d rather explore one of the stops on your own (or even stay on the ship), you are more than welcome to skip any of the tours.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

You can also pre-book one of many “Optional Excursions,” which are tours that you’ll have to pay extra for. I never did any of the Optional Excursions, so I can’t say if they were better or worse than the included tours.

The Viking Hermod was not a massive vessel. As such, it didn’t have all of the amenities that some other cruise ships might. There was no pool, casino, food court, gym, bowling alley, nightclub, etc. Part of this is because Viking’s clientele seems to skew older : my cousin, my brother, and I (in our twenties or late teens) were the youngest passengers on board. Viking River Cruises does not allow minors, so there are no amenities specifically aimed at kids.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Despite this, the Viking Hermod had a beautifully designed interior. The atrium and dining room were both warm and inviting spaces. The lounge and front terraces were comfortable places to sit, relax, or sip a drink. The ship’s common spaces never felt cramped, even when all the passengers were gathered together (e.g. during dinnertime).

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

I also found the stateroom to be comfortably sized. There is lots of space to store your luggage, and I found that the bathroom and shower weren’t too small.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Entertainment and Activities

One thing I really loved about this cruise was that there were lots of fun optional activities onboard the ship in the afternoons and evenings. Our family group enjoyed game nights and musical performances, but you could also attend things like a glassblowing demonstration or a Q&A session with the captains of the ship.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Longtime readers of my blog will know that I don’t shy away from giving my honest opinion when it comes to travel. If an attraction is overrated, I will tell you that. If a tour is underwhelming, I will tell you that. With that in mind, I’m happy to report that this Viking River Cruise was an outstanding experience ! I’ll cherish the memory of going down the Rhine with my extended family for the rest of my life.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Was the cruise perfect? No. I really would’ve preferred a little more time in fewer stops. If I could offer one suggestion to Viking, I’d say either choose Speyer or Rüdesheim am Rhein, and spend the entire day there. However, cruising through the Rhine Gorge the next day made up for it. Sailing past all those castles was the highlight of this cruise.

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

If you’re looking for an upscale travel experience in Western Europe, consider Viking’s Rhine Getaway. I had never been to Switzerland, Germany, France, or the Netherlands before this trip. Now, I can’t wait to go back and explore all four of those countries in greater depth! It’s safe to say this cruise inspired even more wanderlust in me. By that metric, I’d say it was a resounding success!

rhine river cruise amsterdam to basel

Have you ever been on a Viking River Cruise before? Are you about to embark on one? Leave a comment below and let me know! I’m curious if other travelers loved this cruise as much as I do!

We have not yet done a river cruise. And the Viking River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam sounds like a great itinerary. So many lovely stops along the way. I would love to see all the castles and palaces along this route. The Viking ship looks like a great way to travel on the rivers.

' src=

We are leaving September 7 for the Amsterdam to Lucerne cruise and staying over in Lucerne 2 days. You have described everything perfectly so I know what to expect. Just praying they get rain between now and then.

' src=

Peggy did you get rain? Did you have to disembark for a day and go on a sister ship?

A Glowing review of Viking River Cruising. However you were fortunate to travel on a longship from destination to destination, we just completed are first Viking River Cruise and we had quite the opposite experience and picture you describe so charmingly above. Having arrived back a week ago from the Grand European Tour, Budapest to Amsterdam we were exhausted and could have done with another holiday. It would be to long for me to go into all the details, I could fill a book, but now looking back Viking should really have given us an update on the current River conditions. Basically they didn’t, and there lies the problem, yes we knew about the possibility of low and high water but had no idea how bad it was before we arrived, only to be told by a fellow passenger when we boarded ship of the current situation, having to maybe change boats half through our tour. Well we were prepared for that we could handle it and enjoy ourselves what unfolded was problem on problem on problem. Pack unpack pack unpack get the picture, inordinate bus journeys on a longship leisurely cruise, you’d be lucky. hotel stays in Vienna Köln & Amsterdam, Viking docking areas that were waste or industrial sites and nowhere near a village never mind town or city. We changed boats 4 times and even never left on the one we boarded in the first place, most of the excuses were obvious low water etc etc, but then when you have just got off a coach because you couldn’t travel down the Danube or Rhine because of ‘Low Water’ but then you hear from another Viking tour group that you just crossed paths with that they travelled down on that same stretch of water with no problem or we’re about to travel down the stretch water that you just spent 2 hours on a coach because we were told we couldn’t, makes you think what’s go on and who’s telling the truth? Don’t get me wrong the-programme director and staff on the first week were great and worked tirelessly, the 2nd half not so much, funny that! Anyway I could go on on, but there doesn’t seem no point, we were promised that Viking would contact on our return, still waiting a week on, but having trawled the internet and Viking Customer websites I won’t hold my breath in getting anywhere with that approach if what I hear is all true! I always thought Viking was a leading light in River Cruising, shows you how wrong you can be.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your honesty. We are due to board Viking’s Rhine River Cruise on 9/9, two years after canceling twice because of the pandemic. However, with all the news of the drought and low water levels in Europe, we have sadly decided to cancel once again. We will rebook in the late spring when the River is at a higher level. .Speaking with Viking, they made it sound like it was probably only a bus ride between two ports and that there hasn’t been a problem so far. However, your post has given a more honest picture of what actually happened, validating our decision to cancel. Thanks again for your post.

' src=

Just did the Rhine on the Viking Mani mid April with my mom. It was my 1st cruise and first time « across the pond » Did you get to see the parrots in Cologne? It was an amazing sight to see them flying over the longboat to roost for the night. I made some Rudensheim coffee during one of the exhibits on the boat. I had the adventure of my dreams on this cruise. The pre-excursions on Lake Lucerne were amazing. The Pearls of Switzerland excursion was worth the extra money but be prepared for a 13 hour tour. The Alps we’re breathtaking and I got to make CHEESE (and bring some back to the states?

' src=

I’ve always wondered about Viking cruises! I see their ads all the time. The only cruise I’ve done is on the Nile River; big cruise ships don’t appeal to me, but I don’t mind the much smaller river boats and more frequent shore excursions. This really sounds like a lovely way to see a lot of Europe!

' src=

Think twice about cruising now. We just returned from the Rhine Get Away Cruise. We had to do a “ship swap” due to low river levels which meant packing up and getting out of our cabin at 8am the next morning. We also spent 5-6 hours on a coach bus to get to our next destination. The scenic castle tour advertised was not possible. Viking offered a $50 on board credit for our inconvenience. In addition, both my husband and I left the ship sick and tested positive for COVID. I’m disappointed that Viking never checked to make sure passengers were vaccinated. There were many people that were coughing and appeared to be sick on this cruise.

' src=

What trip did you take? We are planning on Basel to Amsterdam next July and wonder if that is the same as you. I am getting mixed information about the river level and the experiences. Any insight you could share would be appreciated. Thank you

' src=

Viking, please address the concerns re the low tide. My cruise is Nov 13. Physically, I cannot do Bus Tours ior do extra packing and unpacking That is not what I signed up for. So if Viking plans on transferring passengers and traveling on busses….then they need to cancel the trip. I need and want a nice, peaceful, laid back River Cruise The President of Viking says he treasures HONESTY. Let’s put that to work.

Did you get a response from Viking?

Good afternoon, We have plans on going on Viking in July 2023 from Basel To Amsterdam. I appreciate the honesty of some of these reviews. The river level is of great concern to my husband and me. And with weather conditions and forecasts being what they are, my fear is this issue will get worse over time not better. One huge attraction to a river cruise is the lovely scenery during the time on board as well as only unpacking one time in 8 days. I will be contacting Viking to ask about their issues this year and just how much disruption there has been to date. Also noting, I have read some other issues regarding the Rhine River. One issue appears to be the huge increase in traffic on the river. The container ships appear to be taking less tonnage, therefore, increasing the number of ships on the river. I appreciate the commentary and will be looking for more answers before we pay the balance of our scheduled trip for 2023.

We are right on target to go July 2023. I hooe you got answers from Viking. We are very concerned about the water levels too! Thank you!

Yes, that is the same cruise we were on. We did a “ship swap” due to low river levels. It was an inconvenience for sure packing up and getting out of the room by 8am. We spent quite a bit of time (I believe 6 hours or so) on a coach bus getting to our next destination. We also made a stop at and docked for the night at a port that was very industrial and unattractive. Viking did the best they could under the circumstances. We missed the scenic cruising through the castle gorge because of this ship swap. Keep an eye of river levels before paying for this cruise. I’ve heard that some cruises had to do this “ship swap” twice!

Just returned from the Romantic Danube Cruise – Budapest to Regensberg 8/28/22 with the Prague extension and a non-Viking extension in Amsterdam for my 60th birthday.

It was an AMAZING experience!!!

Our ship, ATLA, also experienced low water levels so could not dock at Regensburg and we had to take a bus to get to Regensburg. Thankfully we were able to get there because that was my favorite city of the entire tour!!!

Viking is amazing and I loved every minute of it and cannot wait to go back for another cruise! They go all out – I felt supported and pampered with little to no stress! Everything is done for you – from the excursions to the food to the entertainment to having your room cleaned every time you turn around! All of the Danube cities are picturesque, clean and stunningly beautiful! And I found the pace great!

The only thing I saw as a drawback, and agree with the Caffeinated, there was not enough time given in several cities for shopping and exploring. I paid for the extension to go to Salzburg to see the Sound of Music sites. Our guide was terrible! The guides on these excursions are so important and will make or break an excursion. We were rushed through and I even had to ask to go see the steps and fountain in the movie where the kids are running through the palace grounds!!

I second the recommendation to Viking to allow a lot more time in some cities such as Vienna Regensburg, Passau, Salzburg etc. I also recommend a specifically focused Sound of Music tour for all of us old people who loved that movie!

Despite some rushing and low water levels I would go back in a heartbeat!!!

Thank you for the feedback. I do appreciate the information. For the cost of the trip, I am starting to rethink it for sure. My feelings about climate change and seeing any dramatic changes for the good by next year are not too optimistic. We may tour Europe via another mode of transportation.

We have not addressed Viking directly as yet. My feeling is that they will most likely give the glowing reviews and how next year will be fine. I would much rather read information from guests and their experiences.

' src=

Hi, enjoyed your review. We are booked with 7 other couples for a Viking Rhine Getaway in April, Basel to Amsterdam. Very excited and love reading the reviews and seeing the photos. It will be all of our first river cruise. Some of us are starting a week earlier for time in Italy & Switzerland, part of us are also staying longer in Amsterdam afterward. Out excursions we’re just posted & we signed up for most of the included ones. But we are trying to figure a way to get to Heidelberg instead of Speyer & Rudesheim. We don’t want to do the ship’s excursion to Heidelberg.

We are going on this exact Viking cruise in June and we really love your insights into this trip. It has been very helpful and we appreciate your honest evaluation! We can’t wait!

' src=

Great information and review! We (14 of us) are going on the same cruise in April/May. We just finalized our plans and excursions over the weekend. It should be amazing!

Thank you for providing detailed descriptions and insight. Very helpful in planning the itinerary for our B-A cruise this fall.

So sounds like a cruise in mid April would work, just wondering about the weather in mid April. When is high water season. Are there other river cruises? I ‘ll keep researching other sites and blogs. Thanks this was a great read… Norm

We will return with viking..

Outstanding crew; very professional and helpful. This was our 1st cruise upon retirement and we will return with Viking. Outstanding cultural and historical information prior to and during our cruise. Great fun, great food and great people. Thanks for some wonderful memories.

Mark & Debbie

Debbie and I took a Viking river cruise and it blew us away! The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and eager to assist. The food and drink was beyond description. The tours were fun and informative. Our cruise exceeded our expectations and we look forward to our next cruise!

Exciting and wonderful experience.

The Rhine Getaway was the first (NOT LAST) Viking river cruise we took in our lives with our family. It was truly an outstanding, exciting and wonderful experience for us. We enjoyed the scenery, the stops, the shore excursions, and the food. The ship's crew was most attentive to our needs and became friends by the end of the journey. The Covid protocols Viking followed were very much appreciated. It made us feel safer.

The perfect vacation.

Viking has structured the perfect vacation. The accommodations utilize the space (both cabins and public areas) in a very efficient and comfortable way, and the staff kept everything clean and orderly. The meals were creatively presented and delicious. The staff, overall, could not have been more friendly and had a marvelous way of remembering your drink and food preferences which made each passenger feel special. The included tours were just right...introduce you to the city, show you the highlights, and afterward you are allowed plenty of time to set out on your own. The optional tours were worthwhile, and all of the passengers who chose one of the optional tours gave them rave reviews. (My daughter and I loved the evening dinner and tour of the beer gardens.) When I got home I could not stop talking about the trip, and when I received the information on the 2022 cruises, I immediately booked the "Romantic Danube" cruise for next year. I think that says it all!!

The trip of a lifetime..

My 97 year old father and I just completed the trip of a lifetime on Viking Longship Kara. He wanted to see the castles and cathedrals and was not disappointed. As a WWII vet, he was especially thrilled to go on the extra excursion to the Colman Pocket and Audie Murphy memorial. All of the tours were awesome, with excellent local guides. On board the ship, we were treated to personalized service from professional staff and excellent meals. Although we were travelling during COVID, the protocols on the ship (including daily testing of all passengers and staff) made us feel secure. I hope to go on another Viking cruise soon.

Nancy and John

Thank you, viking..

Once again, Viking proves to be the epitome of exploring the world in safety and comfort and the very best river cruise line in the world. This was our 6th Viking cruise (on the Rhine the second time because it has been our favorite) and we are booked in the Spring for Tulips and Windmills. Thank you, Viking!!

Great and relaxing.

Great relaxing Cruise. Our ship people were great. Ship was wonderful and clean. Great music every night in the lounge...dancing and the bartenders were great. I would go it again and just stay on the boat a little more instead of walking off. Employees went above and beyond to help you.

Jared Draper

Avsolutely amazing..

This cruise was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed every bit of it, the excursions were so well executed and ran by local tour guides. If you get the chance do the optional excursion called "Top of Cologne" it was the highlight of the cruise for me.

Richard & Andrea

Traveling with viking is effortless.

European Christmas Markets are something else and Viking is the perfect stress-free way to visit them. Cruising with Viking is effortless. The staff are great as is the food and ambiance. You go with them once and suddenly everything else is second best.

Satisfied Guest

Loved every minute..

We are greatly looking forward to the Rhine Getaway. We last cruised on the Grand European tour and absolutely loved every minute. Staff was beyond excellent.

Julianne Verret & Robinson Pyle

Perfectly executed..

Every single moment of this trip was perfectly executed. All meals were exceptionally prepared. The staff could not have been more attentive. Noted staff members were the Program Director and our housekeeper. All passengers were vaccinated and we were given COVID tests every day. We felt very safe. We are not “Cruise people” and felt a bit wary before the trip, but this was not like a typical cruise. It was a truly luxurious hotel that calmly floated down the Rhine. I have already booked our next adventure with Viking and can’t wait!

Bill & Elyse Tierney

A journey we will never forget.

We have gone on numerous sea cruises over the years, but this was our first river cruise, and it was a vacation we will never forget. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the cruise. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The excursions were wonderful. And the food was the best we have ever had.

Marlon & Paula

Viking always exceeds our expectations..

We have booked the Rhine river cruise for the second time and highly recommend this cruise. This will be our 7th Viking cruise and we keep coming back due to the excellent service from the ship’s staff and the itinerary. We have always had such a very good experience and we don’t even consider any other cruise line as Viking always exceeds our expectations. We are lifelong Viking cruisers.

William Crawford

Everything was top notch..

My sister and I were treated to an awesome cruise down the Rhine, this being our first cruise. Everything was top notch. We were treated to first-class service. The food was great. The program director who gave the port talks was awesome. The guides were very knowledgeable. Viking really outdid themselves. We made great friends for life. Thank you, Viking, for such a great birthday cruise for my sister and me.

Evelyn & Paul

What a great experience..

This was our first cruise and what a great experience. I am still in awe at how well organized and professional Viking is, in all aspects. Everything was perfect . . . we felt special and never felt like a number or part of a crowd. We loved our staff. We loved the tours and tour guides. We loved the food . . . We will definitely be back. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Viking!

Thomas Beckstein

A most truly amazing adventure..

I cannot express how wonderful the staff were. I never could have imagined such an experience. Please look into Rhine Getaway. I am sure you will have a wonderful, enriching experience. Thank you, Viking, for this opportunity.

Bob & Colleen

Such a fantastic experience..

Wow! Such a fantastic experience. Started with the pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam. When we boarded our ship our luggage was in our stateroom, which was clean and functional. The ship and public areas are clean. The program director was energetic and entertaining. All crew members were friendly and helpful. The included excursions were well planned, as were the optional excursions we chose, and the tour guides knowledgeable. The food and service was first class. We were blessed with great weather and spectacular scenery. We opted for the post-cruise extension in Lucerne, and were not disappointed. This was our first Viking river cruise and will not be our last.

Mike & Dina

Viking staff made it possible..

I cannot express how wonderful a time we had on the ship with its amazing staff, the new friends we made, and the tours that we enjoyed every single day. The destinations were diverse and the guides so knowledgeable, I tried nightly to journal the fraction of information I could remember! We had a most memorable time, but Mike and I will remember with love the work of the Viking staff that made it possible.

Went off without a hitch.

Our ship was perfectly appointed and maintained with a friendly and efficient staff. Our Veranda Stateroom . . . had so much built-in storage, once we got everything put away, we were comfortable. Meals were all delicious and beautifully presented. We enjoyed the variety of food, in particular the constantly changing regional choices of French, German and Dutch food. . . . The itinerary was wonderful, offering a glimpse of so many historic and beautiful towns and cities. We liked the fact that a variety of optional tours were offered, and there seemed to be something to suit everyone. My favorite day was the morning we spent on scenic cruising of the Rhine Gorge, with entertaining and educational narration about the castles and towns by our Program Manager. Guides are carefully selected, and schedules carefully adhered to. The total experience, from the pre-cruise extension in Lake Como to exiting the boat on the final morning in Amsterdam, went off without a hitch and made for a memorable experience.

Doris from Nashville

The ship is lovely..

The ship is lovely, spotless and the staff outstanding. Our stateroom steward was a jewel and always on the spot to assist with anything needed. The Cruise Director was extremely pleasant, helpful and gave great advice about the ports and tours. I think the Captain was the hardest working person. He was everywhere, doing everything from carrying luggage to tying up the ship and just generally always on the go assisting where it was needed--that's the first time I have seen that out of a captain.

Mike & Abby

What a wonderful trip..

This was our first cruise, and we chose the Rhine for castles and the variety of places where this cruise stops. It was far beyond our expectations. Everything was absolutely lovely, from being greeted to shown our stateroom. The staff was professional, friendly and very hardworking. Our captain was charming and available to speak to if one wished. Our Cruise Director worked nonstop to make sure everyone had a great time. The food was amazing, such a beautiful presentation for every single meal, and many choices; something for everyone. One regret, that it ended so soon. We give the experience a solid A. Thank you, Viking, for a great vacation!

John & Joanne

Many great memories..

My goodness, this was our first Viking river cruise and we were totally amazed. We were fortunate and able to cruise the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The tours in each of the cities we visited were very informative and we also did some extra excursions to local beer gardens and taverns. The local guides were very knowledgeable as well. We had a super great time. The food on the ship was excellent and the staff was beyond our expectations. Our Cruise Director was the best and joined us on some excursions. We will not hesitate to book with Viking or another river cruise or even try an ocean cruise ship. I had to keep pinching myself because I could not believe we were actually cruising the Rhine and having a most wonderful time. Excellent trip and many great memories.

William & Judith McGuire

An outstanding experience..

Excellent service. Unparalleled attention by everyone. Excellent guides, knowledgeable and attentive. Considerate of our comfort. Onboard staff was excellent, attentive and always helpful. An outstanding experience!

Giles & Anita

Everything (food, excursions, staff) lived up to our high expectations... Met wonderful folks from across the country. It will be remembered as the trip of a lifetime. Thank you, Viking and staff!

David Hawkins

Food on board was incredible..

This was an awesome trip... Really enjoyed the Taste of Alsace... The food on board was incredible. We are already planning another cruise with Viking.

Bob & Susan

Food was great..

This was our first river cruise… Met nice people... Ship was very clean... The staff was fantastic from the bartender to the maid; they knew your name and what you drank. Get the Silver Spirits beverage package... Food was great; breakfast had ample choices plus an egg station... The regional menus had great meals sourced from local dishes. I liked German night with wursts, sauerkraut and other dishes such as saurbrauten... Had great steaks... Nice, quiet cruise… We spent two days in Amsterdam and two days in Basel pre- and post-cruise. Basel was great… All in all a great cruise for the price... Bon voyage!

Wonderful way to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

The staff was personal and professional, and we were completely satisfied with the trip and ship. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Our two-day extension in Basel, Switzerland was wonderful... Our guide helped arrange for trip to Lake Lucerne, she also traveled with us on the tram and then ran to the connecting train to make sure we got on the correct train at the proper time.

Informationw as excellent.

Lovely trip... this was our fourth Viking river cruise. Once we arrived our guides took over... Their information was excellent.

The Moore Family

First class all the way..

Our long-planned cruise was a multi-generation family celebration... As a party of nine, with varying degrees of travel experience, the Viking river cruise far exceeded our expectations. For those who had previously traveled in Europe or taken a Viking cruise, I heard positive comments across the board from the ship layout, to the stateroom accommodations, to Viking staff members, to the variety and quality of food served, to the excursions and the cruise pace. For those experiencing Europe for the first time, I was teased that Viking has set the bar high for all future travel. Thanks to the staff, from the Program Director, to the chef to the captain, the concierge, room stewards and all guides. It was first class all the way. We have already booked a cruise for 2019 to Provence. Thank you!

Willie & Melissa Collins

The food was expectional.

This was our first Viking cruise and probably won’t be our last. The staff was very nice and helpful. We can’t say enough about our Program Director. The food was exceptional, especially breakfast. Keep up the good work Viking! I recommend the French balcony stateroom which we enjoyed.

Anne & John

A sheer delight..

This was our first Viking river cruise and it was a sheer delight. We would highly recommend this cruise as a great way to get to know Viking. The Rhine is beautiful. The staff made us feel so welcomed. They quickly learned our names and were so friendly. This cruise is designed to give you a taste of Germany and also made us want to return again. We are planning our next Viking cruise.

We were treated like royalty.

[My wife] and I finally got our chance to go on a Viking river cruise… Once we landed in Switzerland, a Viking representative met us at the airport and took us directly to the ship. From that moment on, we were treated like royalty. After being welcomed on board and unpacking, we met other guests in the lounge—all adults and no young children. The staff welcomed us and introduced themselves. By the end of the trip, we were on a first name basis... The ship itself was a work of art. It was beautifully designed for sightseeing and relaxation. The entire place was spotless and sparkling clean... Every inch of the ship was elegantly appointed. The Viking dining experience was like eating at a five-star restaurant... Evenings had local entertainment and there was always live music. We were pampered and we loved it… Everything was so well planned... I can see why Viking is now the world leader in both river and ocean cruises. They do everything from A to Z with first-class care and service.

Jack McCarthy & Mary Broughton

Absolutely fabulous.

We just finished our 12th Viking cruise in four years on June 24, 2018. All of the cruises have been truly spectacular from the air service to all staff members. The wait staff to the senior staff have always been first rate and we could not have asked for a more enjoyable experience. Having said that, this past cruise was absolutely fabulous in every respect. Everyone from the wait staff, the bartenders, the maître d', the Program Director and the hotel manager were way beyond anything we have experienced in every respect. Needless to say we have already contacted our Viking agent to plan our next trip this year. We remain two of the greatest advertisers for Viking cruises.

Gary & Valene Winters

We have never enjoyed a vacation like our rhine getaway.

We sailed on the Viking Lofn from Amsterdam to Basel, and it was, in a word, epic. We have never enjoyed a vacation like our Rhine Getaway. We met two other couples who are now our “cruise buddies.” Thank you so much.

Kelley & Al

Made friends on the ship..

We loved our Rhine Getaway river cruise. Our Program Director was outstanding; he delivered insightful talks and was always cheerful and helpful. Our staff was great and accommodating. The cruise, shore excursions and optional tours were wonderful. My husband loved the Mercedes-Benz factory tour. We made friends on the ship and have already booked another cruise with our new compatriots.

Jim & Kim

It was totally amazing..

We went on the Amsterdam to Basel cruise and the staff and guides were the best ever. We did a post-cruise extension in Basel and it was totally amazing. The weather was great and we saw so many great castles and ate great food on and off the ship. At the Black Forest we each bought our own cuckoo clocks and they shipped them with no issues. They arrived fantastic... The staff on made us feel so welcomed and loved that we have already booked our next Viking cruise … We are overly excited to be on Viking again... We tell all our friends and coworkers about our cruises.

T & L. Graham

Flawless from start to finish.

This Viking river cruise was flawless from start to finish. The coordination of air, land and river portions were seamless. Viking representatives were easily identifiable at every transfer area and would lead you through that segment of your cruise... The river cruise personnel were marvelous, from the Cruise Director to the chef and room stewards. They were always smiling, friendly and helpful, which made this cruise spectacular! We could not have asked for better. Do not be afraid to take a Viking cruise if you have dietary restriction! My wife is on a salt, sugar and starch restricted diet and Viking was able to accommodate! Fantastic treatment from every Viking employee we encountered! If you are looking for a cruise, sail with Viking for a perfect trip!

Dana & Thor

Our trip was perfect..

We booked a Danube river cruise for May of 2017 to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary... From the moment our Viking representative met us in the Munich airport, our trip was perfect. Everything was smooth. The rooms were marvelous, the tours were interesting, the service on board was impeccable, the food remarkable, and our fellow travelers interesting and friendly. There was a great balance of free time and scheduled activity time while on the ship. No pressure to do anything if you didn’t want to! Our extensions, both before and after the cruise, were handled seamlessly and having a Viking representative at the hotel was so helpful as we planned our free time. This was our first Viking cruise, but it will not be our last!

Renee & Luc

Incredibly well orgnized..

Just returned from our first river cruise with Viking on the Rhine River. Amazing trip. Picturesque vistas, very well organized, informative and pleasant daily visits, guides always interesting and well informed. Very well-run cruise from the moment we landed in Amsterdam to our drop off at the airport on our return home. Viking has thought of everything. Exceptional staff, from the captain to the housekeeping team. Everyone was diligent, hardworking, dedicated and very pleasant, always willing to help and accommodate our needs... Looking forward to our next cruise.

Did not disappoint.

We booked the Rhine Getaway because it was my first trip to Europe and the Rhine goes through five countries. It did not disappoint… I’m writing this review three years after our trip because of the impact Viking has had on me! My memories and pictures are replayed daily and I dream of another river cruise through France when time and budget allow.

An experiencenot be missed

The most incredible experience ever! We sailed on the Viking Hlin from Amsterdam to Basel and included both a pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam and a post-cruise stay in Lucerne. Viking was so much more than we expected, an experience not to be missed by anyone! We especially thank our Cruise Director for an incredible experience.

David & Karalene

Excursions were awesome..

Excellent trip. All the niceties from airport transfers, wonderful staff with amazing service, knowledge of the area in history and resources... The excursions were awesome. Great history and stories with a twist of humor. Loved the whole trip down the Rhine.

Kathy & Cheryl

Stateroom was excellent.

Just got back from the Rhine Getaway… This was my first river cruise and wow was I surprised. The ship was beautiful and staff top notch. Our cruise director kept us busy, both on and off the ship. The stateroom (veranda) was excellent, and the heated floors in the bathroom were great! Will definitely do another river cruise with Viking. Maybe we will try the Danube next.

Deb & Ed

Best decision we ever made..

Having never been to Europe, we decided on a relatively beginner cruise. The Rhine Getaway was the best decision we ever made. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The tours were well executed with local guides answering every question and joining in on the festivities. The meals onboard were excellent, with several choices at each meal for all palates. This was one cruise we will remember and recommend, for a long time.

Jan & company

What an experience.

Our first cruise was on board the Viking Longship Odin for the Christmas Markets in 2013. That year Condé Nast gave this Longship the highest ranking not only for Viking, but all its competition. What an experience! We are now booked on our third Viking river cruise.

Fell like I'm leaving friends behind,

The staff! So friendly, attentive and helpful. I feel like I'm leaving friends behind at the end of the cruise. And everything was so well thought out and planned, every detail.

Suellen Hubbard

Enjoyed every minute.

We were on a river cruise in November 2012… We enjoyed every minute of our trip. The staff were so accommodating and the tours were so well planned... The whole trip was so delightful. We didn’t have one complaint.

Douglas Woods

First-class service..

Excellent service; food and staff outstanding; would do anything to make you happy, excursions also were very good. Viking provided first-class service from boarding the ship to leaving for home.

Took care of all our needs.

The staff are excellent. They made us feel at home and took care of all our needs with a smile.

Enjoyed the small-sized ship.

This was our first cruise and we really enjoyed the small-sized ship and the family feeling from the staff.

Heated floor.

The heated floor in the bathroom was wonderful.

Enjoyed immensely.

Enjoyed my cruise immensely and think Viking will be a great way to see other areas of the world.

Ellen & Jack

Forgot we were on a ship..

Most of the time I forgot we were on a ship… We had a room with a deck and it was wonderful. The room was always clean and we always had water available. Our Program Director was always available to answer questions and was just super. We had a waiter who always used our names which was a big plus to us... We did the Black Forest tour which was great... The coaches are first class and very comfortable. We just booked our next Viking cruise... Can't wait!

John and Jo

The best tour guide ever..

It may seem unusual that we focus on the staff when we were in the midst of such a beautiful area, but the staff is a critical factor in the enjoyment one experiences on a cruise. We certainly did, and the joy that the staff took in their work contributed to our experience! Likewise, our local guide in Cologne was quite simply the best tour guide we have ever encountered. Thanks to all for this opportunity to view a fascinating part of Europe. We are quick to recommend Viking.

Everything was above expectations

Great trip from Basel to Amsterdam. Well-trained staff who enjoy providing top-class service. Everything was above our expectations.

Valerie & Gail

Always available to assist..

This was my first Viking river cruise (traveled with my sister) and loved the whole experience. The excursions were great, and the consideration for those who couldn't walk and move as quickly as others was very helpful (my sister needed to use a walker). The staff was always available to assist, and with a smile.

Tom and Ann

First river cruise but certianly not the last..

Incredible is the only way to describe this journey! The activities, the food, the staff...It was all perfect. This was our first river cruise but certainly not the last!

Mike & Kathy

Nothing short of fabulous.

We had such a wonderful experience on the Viking Idun sailing from Basel to Paris. The staff was so friendly and the Program Director was absolutely fantastic! Viking is so well organized and it made for a smooth trip with no unexpected glitches along the way. I could not ask for a more enjoyable experience. River cruising is so laid back and relaxing although there was much to do when you wanted to, and many new friends to meet. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone looking for a European journey with no stress.

Claudia Joyce

The entire ship was squeaky clean..

This Rhine Getaway cruise from Basel to Amsterdam was our first cruise with Viking. And our experiences with this ship, its entire staff and the itinerary make us look forward to another Viking experience… The entire ship was squeaky clean and the reception to us right from the beginning was warm and welcoming… There are places to sit and just watch the incredible scenery of the Rhine shores go by. And yes, you will see castles, vineyards and fortresses just like in the brochures and magazines you've read… We will cruise again with Viking next year. Lucky us!

Such a wonderful time.

This was our fourth trip with Viking. We had such a wonderful time we just booked our fifth trip. Best staff ever!

Very smoothly organized

The cruise was terrific, very smoothly organized. The staff is so helpful and courteous and the guided tours were outstanding. Not to mention the delicious meals!

Trip was focused on us at every opportunity.

The Program Director made us feel like the trip was focused on us at every opportunity. The food was wonderful and the ship was very comfortable. Everyone was great!

Very well looked after

Excellent destinations and great shore excursions. Lovely ship amenities and very well looked after by staff. Nice to have free Wi-Fi too!

Wouldn't change a thing.

This was my first Viking cruise, and it was absolutely perfect—right down to them arranging a taxi to a doctor when I was hit with strep throat in Germany. The staff, the food, the tours, the Christmas markets and the accommodations were all wonderful; I wouldn’t change a thing. Just booked another holiday cruise and can’t wait!

Marc & Charles Azeltine

A unique experience..

My brother and I recently took our first cruise and it did not disappoint. France, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands—they were all such beautiful places that we didn’t want to come home. Seeing Europe on a river cruise is a unique experience. From the housekeepers to the Program Director, the staff treat you like royalty. Most of our time was spent relaxing on the ship with new friends, and I have to say I have never enjoyed a lounge better than I did on the Viking ship. The piano player really set the mood every evening and made you feel like you were in a magical place. Drinking, socializing, dancing and listening to music—all with the Rhine flowing by. I could live like that forever!

Don and Maryann Johnson

The greatest way to see the world..

This was our second Viking Cruise and it was wonderful. The ship was beautiful and comfortable, and our room was perfect with sliding glass doors to the veranda. The sights we saw have given us such great memories. Each meal was a true delight: breakfast, lunch and dinner always had great variety and were prepared with the freshest ingredients. The personnel went out of their way to provide us with a wonderful time, and the Program Director could answer any questions we had. The tours were extremely interesting and paced just right with enough time for us to sit at an outdoor café, watching the folks pass by, eat and shop. We met some wonderful fellow travelers who said they, too, were enjoying their Viking cruise and would go on another. One last note, the extensions on both ends of our trip were fantastic. Thank you, Viking, for showing us the greatest way to see the world. You have spoiled us for any other kind of traveling.

Tim & Ofelia, Hawaii

What a wonderful journey.

We took the Rhine Getaway cruise and had a great time! The staff were very attentive to our needs, making sure that we enjoyed every bit of our experience. From the tour director to the exceptional and hardworking wait staff, kitchen crew and cabin attendants, we were treated with a cruise par excellence! The included land tours were equally as wonderful and the tour guides were very knowledgeable and informative, giving us insight into the places we visited and ample time to tour the places on our own. All in all, we had a satisfying first river cruise and would do another one with Viking. What a wonderful journey!

Bob & Cindy Hanson

Hats off to viking.

What a wonderful experience. We have been on several ocean cruises and the Rhine River cruise was by far superior. I cannot say enough about the staff and the company as this was an exceptional vacation. From travel arrangements, city tours and excursions to meals and fellow guests from all over the world, we will have memories of all of these for a long time. Hats off to Viking.

James and Donna Ernst

Our second European trip with Viking and the weather was perfect! Switzerland to Amsterdam with so many nice stops on the way. Our suite was perfect and very well attended. The reduced airfare was really a plus, and in Amsterdam an extended stay was a must. Viking seems to go out of their way to make everything as smooth as possible and it is so nice to unpack and have a cozy apartment to return to every night. The new Longship was very nice and the crew was there for every whim. I hope to see Russia sometime soon. No regrets.

The Sullivans

Thank you for a great time..

What a great time! The reality far exceeded the expectations of this trip. The pre-stay in Amsterdam was full of history and fun discovery. Once we boarded the ship the services and staff were first class each and every moment of our trip. We loved the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel; the sights and tours were spectacular and full of history and facts from local guides. We have cruised a number of times; this was our first river cruise but it won’t be our last. Thank you, Viking, and please give a great big shout out to the Viking Jarl crew, staff and captain for a wonderful trip.

Randy & Winnie

Best vacation ever..

Our first river cruise and by far the best vacation we have ever had. We celebrated our 35th anniversary on this trip and the crew went above and beyond our expectations to make it a special night for us. The service and food on the boat were incredible, and the variety of the tours as well as the optional tours were perfect for what we wanted to see and do. On top of all this we met seven other couples on the boat and had so much fun getting to know them.

Paul & Judy Costello

Our first river cruise..

We have traveled to Europe a couple of times before, both on tours and on our own. The accommodations were very comfortable, and our meals were very enjoyable (I am going to need to work on losing the extra pounds I gained during the trip). However, the people were really the key to making the trip wonderful. Viking staff were friendly and always helpful. Their number one objective was to make our visit enjoyable in spite of obstacles such as the weather, and they were successful. Additionally, the open seating policy at meals allowed us to mingle freely with other guests, and we really enjoyed getting to know people from many parts of the world, developing friendships with a number of them. My personal recommendation to other travelers is to plan to arrive in Amsterdam a couple of days early to acclimate to the time zone and to see many of the sights in this beautiful city. We did, and we did not regret it. I am sure that we will be looking for another opportunity to enjoy this method of travel with Viking in the near future.

Nancy & Colin

Everything was wonderful..

Everything was wonderful on our trip down the Rhine. Viking Rinda is one of the new Longships and we were on its third sailing. We want to do another Viking cruise soon.

Ron & Tina

Thank you for the entire crew..

This was one of the best vacation experiences. The 2-day pre-extension in Amsterdam, the 8-day cruise and the 2-day post-extension in Lucerne were outstanding. Kudos to all involved with Viking and a special "thank you" to the entire crew of Viking Helvetia.

R. Stephens

First trip to europe..

Prior to my recent Rhine Getaway, I had never been to Europe or on a cruise of any type. This itinerary was a perfect choice for our anniversary celebration since it provided a taste of four countries in just a week. Highest compliments to the entire staff and crew, who were professional and courteous in their duties throughout the cruise. The Program Director did an excellent job organizing the daily excursions and evening entertainment. I cannot help but smile when I consider all of the wonderful “firsts” I experienced. Thank you, Viking River Cruises. I made so many wonderful memories and I’ll definitely be back!

Nina and Liz

Felt like royalty..

My friend and I left our families at home and had the most wonderful girls’ trip ever. I would not change a single thing about my experience on Viking Sun. The staff was so amazing, we felt like royalty. The tours were perfect, the guides informative and fun. Some of the people we met on the ship became friends for life. We both loved every minute of it and are planning our next Viking cruise. I can’t say enough good things about Viking and our trip.

Great cruise experience..

The cruise experience was great, from the first call to your travel consultants through the airline reservation process, being picked up at the Amsterdam airport and coming aboard. The new Viking Forseti is fantastic, the management and crew were super, and the Program Director made the cruise even better. The tour arrangements and their organization, the speakers and tour guides, lounge entertainment and the commentary while sailing past Rhine castles added so much to the experience. The entire crew of young folks who made the beds, served the meals and the lounge drinks were so friendly and energized all the time. The meals were also fantastic, and having the choice at breakfast and lunch of either the buffet in the lounge or the full meal in the dining room was a bonus.

Can't wait to go again..

The Rhine Getawaycruise over New Years, 2012 was our first Viking cruise, after three on another cruise line. We loved it so much we've already booked another cruise. Viking is a cut above in so many ways! We felt pampered and cared for from the moment we embarked, and the Program Director did an outstanding job of providing us with stimulating, intelligently presented excursions and experiences. We can’t wait to go again.

European christmas markets..

We just returned from a December sailing from Amsterdam to Basel. It was a superb experience that we cannot stop talking about. All the beauty and history of the Rhine River Valley, plus the added bonus of holiday decorations and the terrific European Christmas markets at every stop. Thank you Viking for a superb vacation!

The Hillmers

Best serivce and food..

Very much enjoyed the trip. Best service and food we have had on a vacation in a long time. Staff was very nice and also very professional. We have already booked the Romantic Danube trip for 2014.

Love our first cruise..

We just returned from our Rhine Getaway cruise and we had a great time. Can’t say enough about how wonderfully we were treated by the staff; couldn't ask for a better captain and crew. Outstanding! This was our first river cruise and we loved it. Very comfortable room, great food, really enjoyed the guides on the excursions. Loved the windmills at Kinderdijk. We enjoyed this river cruise so much, we are already planning another one. Thank you all so much for the perfect trip.

John & Anne Baxter

Truly a great getaway cruise..

The Rhine Getaway cruise was a wonderful getaway for our family. We enjoyed comfortable, well-appointed staterooms, excellent cuisine and unparalleled service on Viking Helvetia while cruising down the scenic, historically rich Rhine River. The tours included with the cruise were well organized and interesting, and a great introduction to many attractions of the Rhine Valley. On board activities were also well-planned to extend this experience. We saw quite a lot of Europe in not a lot of time, and yet it never felt rushed. Fantastic! We enjoyed the cruise so much we have already booked another Viking cruise for 2013. Thanks, Viking.

Guido & Kathy Casciato

A carefree way to see europe..

Just completed our first cruise with Viking on the Rhine, sailing on Viking Sun, and what a great experience. Viking has this down to an art; excellent staff, great ship, great combination of tours and time to enjoy the many beautiful towns and cities that we docked at. If you want a carefree way to see many parts of Europe on the Rhine, while you sit and enjoy wonderful cuisine prepared and served to you at each meal, this is the company to choose. It is nice to see a company excel at what they do and Viking excels at all facets of the travel business on their ships. Thanks to all for the great trip and look forward to many more excursions.

Edwin & Jing Torralba

Everything was fantastic.

Everything was fantastic: the staff, the itineraries, the organized excursions and guides, and the people we met. This is our second Viking trip; our first one was China, and I promoted it to everyone I met on board. So if anybody from our trip signs up for China next time, we are responsible! We are looking into our next European river cruise and we will definitely go with Viking.

Suzanne & Tim Schauman

Germany at christmas time..

Despite the lack of rain and the river levels being low, the staff and the journey were remarkable. Our trip was part land and part river. Going to Germany at Christmastime with the sights, sounds and snow have left us wanting more; therefore, we have booked the Romantic Danube for December 2013.

LeaRaye & Cliff Huff

Gracious, friendly and helpful staff.

The most wonderful experience! Great accommodations. The staff were so gracious, friendly and helpful; they treated us like we were so important. Remembering our names was exceptional. Tour guides were fun and made each exploration special, and they were careful to make sure we all got to and from our excursions with nobody left behind. Also meeting new friends from other countries made the trip even more fun. I am eager to go on another. We highly recommend Viking for any cruise you may want. They are premium!

Cheryl Fauerbach

It was lovely..

We recently went on a Rhine river cruise with Viking and had a great time. Superior staff, interesting excursions with tours of castles, cathedrals, quaint towns and vineyards. It was lovely. Having the ship as a base made our trip very relaxing. We also met many wonderful people on board.

Nancy Schill

Staff was wonderful..

Just returned from our first-ever Viking river cruise, the Rhine Getaway and want to tell you it was awesome! Staff was wonderful, especially our waiters and our tour manager for the descriptions of each tour and also for the way in which they were managed, with nothing left to chance. Food was out of this world, especially the desserts. Also met some wonderful fellow travelers. See you next year, Viking!

Sharon Dittmer

Need a little time away? Contact Viking River Cruises. You won’t regret it! Pick long cruises or shorter ones; they’re all pretty great.

Jean Lee Perry

Thanks for the memories.

Loved our first Viking river cruise last month down the Rhine. Will definitely plan another Viking trip! Thanks for the memories.

Carol Kenton

Would go back tomorrow..

We just returned from the Rhine Getaway cruise. Would go back tomorrow! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and Viking takes very good care of you.

Jean & Doug Pendl

A winter wonderland.

Our trip from NYC was well scheduled and the flight that Viking had arranged was very comfortable. On arrival in Basel we were quickly met by a Viking representative and transported to the ship. We spent a fabulous day in the sunshine of Basel taking tours and visiting our first Christmas markets. The snow began to fall as we departed, which seemed to set the stage for our trip through a winter wonderland. Every port of call was well planned and led by very knowledgeable guides. The service on board was impeccable, with all our wants fulfilled. It should be noted there is not much to do on the ship as compared to ocean cruise ships but our time was well spent at the Christmas markets. We took some extra time in Amsterdam on our own at the end. This cruise will allow you to take in a number of different cities of Europe and still not feel rushed. It is cold in December so appropriate clothing is a must to maximize your enjoyment.

Jeffrey Hubbard

Highly recommended.

Took an 8-day cruise with Viking through Germany in December and would highly recommend them.

Susan DeColaines & Bill Swanson

A wonderful week.

We had a wonderful week cruising on the Rhine. Our tour guide was excellent. Everything was organized and very well done. The ship was comfortable, well run, very maintained and the food was delicious. The variety of other travelers was very pleasant. We’re booking immediately for our next Viking cruise!

Connie Tritt

Best cruise ever..

Best cruise ever...from fabulous food to lovely locations and very comfortable staterooms. What a wonderful way to experience the world!

Marjorie & Leland Wieweck

Our fourth cruise with viking..

We have just returned from our cruise on the Rhine and the trip was wonderful. The weather was perfect and the fall colors were beautiful. The staff were great and made the trip a delight. This was our fourth cruise with Viking and we would recommend this trip to everyone! Having to unpack only once makes traveling effortless and the open seating during dinner helps you meet the most interesting people who enrich the experience. We can’t wait to plan our next trip.

Jim & Peggy Meadows

A lovely time..

We had a lovely time on this cruise. In all the food was excellent. And how can anyone forget the phrase, “Ciao for now”?

George & Beth Adams

A very relaxing vacation..

We've just returned from our first Viking River Cruises journey on the beautiful Viking Helvetia. The freedom to do as much or as little as you like made for a very relaxing vacation. Loved the open seating for the meals; it was such fun to meet so many interesting people from a variety of places. We loved sleeping with our window open listening to the birds and the gentle sound of the water as we fell asleep, then watching the sun rise over the horizon in the morning. I cannot say enough about how wonderful our experience was on your cruise. I have three friends who have asked me to send them your site already!

Don & Nancy Griffith

Remembered for a lifetime.

We cannot say enough about how pleased we were with all aspects of our Viking River Cruises journey. We felt like the entire staff was there just for us. Thank you again for giving us a vacation that will be remembered for a lifetime as the best we've ever had.

Kenneth Reese

Such a great way to travel..

I’ve just returned from the Rhine Getaway cruise aboard Viking Helvetia. Great trip! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the cruise. Such a great way to travel. Congratulations to the entire crew.

Thomas LeFevre

I top my hat to you..

I greatly enjoyed the smaller, more intimate nature of the cruise. One can develop multiple friendships among passengers due to the smaller groups and frequency of encounters. I tip my hat to you and your staff for a job well done and I look forward to my next trip with Viking.

Willy & Karin Goedeke

We enjoyed every minute.

We just wanted to let you know how pleased we were with our Rhine cruise. It was just perfect; we enjoyed every minute!

Roxanne Lennon

By far the best way to travel..

I've only been on two of Viking's cruises, but my parents and other family members have been on a total of 21 cruises with your company. The great job you did on our most recent trip confirms our belief that Viking River Cruises is by far the best way to travel.

The Itinerary

Rivers of the World Cruise 2024

Ship: Aqua Nera Destination: Peru, Argentina, Brazil Days: 16 You’ll begin your journey in the awe-inspiring Peruvian Amazon, starting with a land stay at the Country Club Lima Hotel before boarding the Aqua Nera . Following your 6-night sailing in the lush “mirrored forest,” you’ll continue on to stay at the Tambo del Inka hotel in the Sacred Valley, visiting Cusco and the inimitable Machu Picchu. Complete your stay in South America with two Rivers of the World exclusives: a stay on the Brazilian/Argentinian border for unbeatable views of the Iguazu Falls and another at the Belmond Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro.

Depart from Brazil on October 18 and arrive in the Netherlands on October 19.

Ship: S.S. Beatrice Destination: Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary Days: 16 We have another treat in store for you upon your arrival in the Netherlands. To elevate our wonderful European Jewels itinerary even further, we’re moving one of our favorite Super Ships, the S.S. Beatrice all the way to the Rhine. From there, you’ll sail through no less than four countries in just 16 days, getting a taste for the varied delights of Central Europe along the way. And to enhance your sailing even further, Rivers of the World guests will find our Masterpiece Collection Private Mozart & Strauss Concert in Austria, normally available at an additional cost, automatically included just for them.

Depart from Hungary on November 3 and arrive in France later the same day.

Rivers of the World Cruise 2024

Ship: S.S. Catherine Destination: France Days: 8 Next, we’ll slow things down for an indulgent sailing through France, with eight days to soak in the easy-going luxuries of Burgundy & Provence. Fine wine and cuisine reign supreme in this part of the world, and a river cruise is the ideal way to experience it all in style. Another Masterpiece Collection experience has been included for our Rivers of the World guests on this journey: truffle hunting at a family farm in the village of Grignan, with a tasting of the famous “black diamonds” accompanied by local wine.

Depart from France on November 10 and arrive in Vietnam on November 11.

Ship: Mekong Jewel Destination: Vietnam, Cambodia Days: 16 Cap off your expedition in style with a grand voyage through Vietnam and Cambodia. Begin with two nights at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi and one night sailing the island-studded waters of Ha Long Bay, then take a short flight down to eclectic Siem Reap. Here, you’ll trek through ancient temple complexes, explore colorful markets, and stay at the absolute oasis that is the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. Then board the artfully airy Mekong Jewel to cruise the Mekong River and the unique villages of its delta. Your final stop? The Park Hyatt Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City, where a dinner with a spectacular panoramic view at the Chill Sky Bar is amongst our Rivers of the World exclusive highlights.
