Vienna Boat Tour: Cruise the Danube River with these Day Tours
Let’s help you choose the right Vienna boat tour for your trip!
The Danube River runs through Vienna, but because it doesn’t cross right through the Innere Stadt or District 1, which is the old town, it can be easy to miss.
Between the palace, cathedral, museums, art galleries and famous cafes, you could very easily come to the end of your trip in Vienna and realize, you haven’t yet walked along the Danube Canal, let alone the Danube River!
So if you want to cruise the Danube, you’re going to have to be proactive and book a tour. But which one should you pick and where should you cruise?
When it comes to picking a Vienna boat trip, there are no shortage of options. You can take a day trip to Bratislava and then travel back by boat, spend the day exploring the Wachau Valley vineyards on a cruise, enjoy a boat tour with dinner and live music, try out a private e-boat and so much more.
So we’re going to help you figure out which of these Vienna boat tours is right for you! Let’s narrow it down.

Best Vienna Boat Tour
1. vienna to bratislava tour by bus and boat.
⭐️ RATING: 4.2/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 11.5 hours | ✅ Book it!
This Vienna boat tour is an exciting one because it takes you all the way to Bratislava, Slovakia! That means you can add another European country to your list!
On the way to Bratislava, you travel by bus. This is a 1-hour journey aboard a coach bus.
Once you arrive in Bratislava, you will meet a local guide who will take you on a guided walking tour of the old town. The tour will last about 2 hours and afterwards, you’ll have additional time to explore Bratislava on your own and perhaps retrace your steps to some of the attractions that most interest you.
A few attractions not to be missed in Bratislava’s old town include:
St. Martin’s Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral that’s been the site of many coronations; Michael’s Gate, the only gate that has been preserved in the city; the Bratislava Fortifications, the last remaining stretch of the medieval city walls; and Roland Fountain, a fountain topped by Knight Roland who was the legendary defender of the city.
I would suggest making time to visit Bratislava Castle. Built in the 9th century and modified many times over, this 4-towered castle sits perched on a hill overlooking the Danube River.
It’s a beautiful walk to the top offering nice views over the Old Town, plus you also have the Slovak National Museum and the Baroque Gardens on the north side.
You’ll also have plenty of time to try Slovak food during the day. I really enjoyed a restaurant called Modrá Hviezda which is set in a cave at the foot of the castle hill. It’s a pretty unique dining experience so ask to be seated in the back if there’s room.
We ordered pork chop covered in crushed walnuts with a honey-mustard sauce and a side of roasted potatoes, and duck cooked in a wine sauce with forest mushroom and potato pancakes.
After enjoying your day trip to Bratislava , you’ll make your way down to the pier to board the boat to Vienna. You’ll travel aboard the Twin City Liner, which is a catamaran. The journey time back to Vienna is 1.5 hours.
Bring your passport on this boat trip as you are entering another country and you may be required to present it.
- You get to visit another country
- Full-day activity
- Plenty of time for solo exploration

2. Wachau Valley Day Tour with Wine Tasting
⭐️ RATING: 4.8/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 9 hours | ✅ Book it!
This day trip to the Wachau Valley isn’t a full-day boat tour, however, it does include a boat tour segment in the itinerary when you do this trip during the summer months!
You’ll start the day leaving Vienna and travelling by van down narrow countryside roads deep into the heart of the Wachau Valley.
Along the way, your driver and guide will teach you all about the history of wine-making in the region which dates back to the time of the Romans!
During the tour, you’ll get to taste a variety of dry and fruity white wines from the Wachau Valley and sample other local delicacies like apricot jams and liqueurs.
If you take this tour during the summer months (technically mid-May to mid-October), you’ll be able to enjoy a boat ride on the Danube River from Spitz to Melk. Since this isn’t possible during the winter months, this activity gets replaced with a guided tour of Melk Abbey.
Once you arrive in the medieval town of Dürnstein, you’ll get free time to explore. The castle ruins are an important attraction in the area since this is where Richard the Lionhearted was once held prisoner.
Finally, you’ll get to visit a heuriger , which is a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern. Here you’ll enjoy a wine tasting!
You can browse more wine tours in Vienna here.
- Great way to explore an Austrian wine region
- Visits beautiful medieval towns
- Scenic boat ride during the summer months
3. Heurigen Cruise with Viennese Songs and Buffet
⭐️ RATING: 4.1/5 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 3 hours | ✅ Book it!
This Vienna boat tour down the Danube River is an opportunity to enjoy live music with an Austrian dinner.
During the cruise, you circle Vienna’s 2nd district which offers scenic views of the illuminated skyline. You get to see landmarks like the Danube Tower, the Danube Plate, and the DC Tower.
Plus, you can also see historic buildings such as the Anniversary Church, the Ringturm and the Rossauer Barracks.
The performance is all Viennese Heuriger music. If you’re wondering what that is, you’re not alone! Heuriger refers to a wine tavern, so these are traditional songs played mainly on guitars and accordions which add to the merriment of the place.
Dinner is served buffet style featuring classic Viennese dishes.
- Get to listen to traditional wine tavern music
- Scenic views of Vienna
- Buffet dinner featuring Austrian cuisine
4. Floating Dinner Vienna: Private Dining Experience on Danube
⭐️ RATING: NEW! | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH: 1 hour | ✅ Book it!
If you’re looking for the most unusual Vienna boat ride, this one here might be it!
This is a very unique setup where you get your own e-boat Island. Picture something like a round floating deck complete with comfortable patio furniture and a palm tree.
Dinner is served before the cruise and includes a main course meal, either Viennese Schnitzel or a vegetarian option, and one bottle of red or white wine.
You then begin your e-boat sail down the Danube River, but it’s not as tricky as it sounds. The e-boats are extremely easy to drive using a joystick control.
If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind boat cruise in Vienna, this one fits the bill.
- Unique boat experience
- Get your own private e-boat island
- Viennese Schnitzel and wine for dinner

You have lots of choices and hopefully, this blog post has helped you narrow it down to the right one for you!

What to Do in Bratislava in One Day On a Danube River Cruise
Located between elegant Budapest in Hungary and Imperial Vienna in Austria, tiiny Bratislava (in Slovakia) beckons the curious traveler.
It seems this city on the Danube is included on just about every Danube River cruise. And it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite small cities on the river.
The austere architecture of eastern Europe resonates in cities all along the Lower Danube, from Bucharest, Romania to Budapest, Hungary. In these two important cities, Communist bloc cement grey buildings are juxtaposed with the grand designs of rococo, French Baroque and neoclassical architecture. But it’s tiny Bratislava, flanked by the opulence of Budapest and Vienna, that is quietly becoming its own major tourist destination.
What to Do in Bratislava
Close to Vienna, Bratislava lies near the border of Austria, where the Danube runs almost straight east and west between Budapest and Vienna. After several visits, I finally feel as though I’m beginning to understand this vibrant city that dates back to the Stone Age.
Almost every river cruise company includes Bratislava on their Danube itinerary. The Viking Lif docked here for nearly 12 hours. Plenty of time to explore the city, enjoy a café lunch and never feel rushed.
What to do in Bratislava usually begins with a morning motor coach tour of the city and a visit to the hilltop Bratislava Castle. It’s a good way to get acclimated to a new city. Then you could strike out on your own.
After the city tour and a visit to hilltop Bratislava Castle, your bus will return to the ship for those who want lunch aboard or let others off near the city center at the Danube.
If you choose to spend a day in Bratislava to visit the heart of the city, it’s just a short walk from where the many river boats are docked. Join me on my walking tour.
From almost anywhere in the city center, you can look up to see St. Michael’s Gate tower. Head over and walk through St. Michael’s Gate, the only remnant of one of four gates used to enter the city circa 1300.
Tourists congregate and try to find their hometowns on the brass circle. Inside St. Michael’s tower is the museum of medieval fortification and an assortment of period weapons to view.
One “famous” resident is Cumil another whimsical brass sculpture, also known as Rubberneck. He’s a sewer worker, peeking out from underneath a manhole cover. It’s supposed to be good luck to rub his cap, thus golden brass color of it.
Another brass statue, the Schöner Naci is supposed to be Ignác Lamár, an eccentric elderly man who wandered the streets of Bratislava in the early 1900’s. Legend says that he supposedly tipped his hat and wished, “Good Day” as he passed by the women of the city.
Once you begin your walking tour, you can cover the main part of downtown in two-three hours but you should really leave enough time to stop at a café for a hearty Slovak lunch.
Bratislava is one of those truly underestimated cities in Europe. A mecca for culture, Bratislava has so much to offer that one day is barely enough time to appreciate it. With a river cruise that begins or ends in Vienna or Budapest, a few nights spent pre- or post-cruise in Bratislava is well worth it. And besides, it’s only a short train or tourist boat ride between the three cities.

Hi Alyson, thanks for reading my article. On river cruises, excursions are included in the cost of the cruise. There may be optional excursions that you can purchase (ex. a Mozart concert in Vienna), depending on the cruise line.
Where your river ship will dock also depends on the cruise line. Viking owns many of the docking spaces so their ships tie up at prime locations. Several other premium cruise lines might have dockage at a good spot too.
Budapest has river ship dockage on both side of the river, for example, with Viking having the Pest side, and AmaWaterways in the past has docked on the Buda side. In Vienna, most likely you’ll dock outside of the main downtown center, so the river cruise line will provide shuttles back and forth. Passau you’ll probably be right where you want to be for walking on your own. Linz, if I remember correctly, we needed to be shuttled into town.
Read the cruise line’s excursion and city info and somewhere it will most likely tell you what to expect in port. Bottom line, the major river cruise lines will provide shuttle service into the city center if they have to dock away from the main part of town.
You should not need to book transfers to/from the city centers.
Have a wonderful river cruise! Thank you again for taking the time to write.
I am new to river cruising and am going on the Danube in August for 7 nights, visiting Budapest, Krems, Bratislava, Passau, Linz, Vienna. With sea cruising we organised our own excursions with companies meeting us at our ship or port. I would like to know if this is the case with the Danube, do the boats moor within walking distance of the city centres, if not, are there independent transfer options from the boat, or do we have to book transfers through our tour boat operater?
Would much appreciate any advice or input, many thanks

Stepping aboard you will appreciate the superb surroundings of your floating luxury hotel for the next seven nights with spacious and well-appointed cabins or suites, private bathrooms and meticulously prepared fine cuisine.
From Budapest, we slip our moorings and head on our journey north to Esztergom spending the morning exploring its historic centre, which once was Hungary’s capital, before continuing westwards to the beautiful old town of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Navigating through Lower Austria we then reach the romantic town of Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned, having been shipwrecked on his return from the crusades. After we visit the remarkable monastery in Melk, with its 200m long Emperor’s Gallery, lined with portraits of Austrian emperors.
Soon we arrive in Linz where we take the short drive to Salzburg. During the guided tour of the old town we will see the imposing fortress Hohensalzburg towering over the city and of course the birthplace and residence of Mozart, Salzburg’s most famous citizen. On our way back eastwards we will reach classical Vienna, home of Strauss and many great composers. This city offers up so much wonderful architecture as well as a host of other things to see including the Spanish riding school.
Finally, cruising into Hungary, we arrive back in imperial Budapest, straddling the picturesque Danube. After a guided tour of this palatial city we spend the evening on board, where the Captain hosts another spectacular dinner, an excellent finale to this most exceptional and relaxing cruise.

EMBARK IN BUDAPEST
Arrive in Budapest, where your five-star floating hotel is moored. The dedicated crew will welcome you on board, ensuring you settle into your comfortable and extremely well-equipped cabin and familiarize yourself with the ship. There is always a sense of expectancy and excitement on the eve of a cruise and after an excellent dinner in the stylish restaurant, conversation is sure to revolve around the delights ahead of you.
Overnight we have cruised upstream to Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest towns, a royal capital during medieval times and today the seat of the country’s archbishop. We have a guided tour of the famous neoclassical basilica, standing sentinel over the Danube on the border with Slovakia, and boasting one of the world’s largest altarpieces and a wealth of priceless religious artifacts. The castle is also worth exploring; it was the seat of government until the Ottomans invaded in the 16th century.
Nestling below are myriad atmospheric churches resonating with the enchanting sounds of choir; this is the best of provincial Hungary and is little changed since Habsburg times. As you enjoy your first lunch on board we gently leave Esztergom in our wake, affording a fascinating opportunity to compare the different landscapes, towns, and villages of Hungary on one river bank and of Slovakia on the other.
This morning we explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored Old Town. Equally impressive is the imposing 17th-century castle commanding expansive views across the Danube.
This afternoon we cruise into Lower Austria, a peaceful, bucolic region and home to some of the country’s best wines. By now the stresses of everyday life seem distant as you absorb the ever-changing scenes we pass: children playing on the river banks, young couples strolling arm in arm like generations before them, vignerons carefully pruning their vines, and cobbled quaysides lined by half-timbered buildings.
You’ll marvel as the Captain skilfully navigates the ship along the serene river and through locks whose mechanisms never cease to fascinate, as we cruise towards Dürnstein during dinner.
DÜRNSTEIN & MELK
Durnstein is known principally for the ice-blue tower of its abbey, which dominates the view, and the castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 after being shipwrecked on his return from the crusades.
This morning we take a guided walking tour to explore this memorable city further. Set on a rocky outcrop high above the river, the castle is now ruined, but it’s easy to imagine England’s legendary monarch seething with frustration far from home while waiting for his family to raise funds to pay his ransom.
After lunch, you visit the remarkable Melk Abbey. Nothing quite prepares you for your first sight of this enormous honey-coloured building, standing resplendent above the surrounding countryside. Originally a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine Order in the 11th-century and, although reconstructed in Baroque style during the 18th century, it has remained a monastic school and monastery ever since. The Abbey is renowned for its 214-yard-long Emperor’s Gallery lined with portraits, many fine rooms, and an ornate library. After we re-join the ship, dinner is served during the final part of our cruise upstream through the pretty Nibelungengau, immortalised in the music of Wagner.
SALZBURG OR LINZ
Reaching Linz, you will have the choice to stay in the city and take a guided walking tour, exploring its charming baroque old town. At its heart you’ll see one of the finest squares in Austria, lined by grand pastel-colored facades with an impressive central Trinity Column of white marble, crowned by a gilded sunburst. There’s also the fortress-like castle, built high above the city by Emperor Friedrich III, now a museum housing a fine collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century artworks.
Alternatively, we drive to Salzburg, once an independent state whose archbishops turned it into one of the most sophisticated cities north of the Alps. Dominating the skyline is one of Europe’s largest stone fortresses, the Hohensalzburg, while beneath its walls church domes and spires rise from the delightful Altstadt, or Old Town. Then there’s the wonderful Hellbrunn Palace and the splendid formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace – a must for horticulture fans.
This morning, discover some of the city’s main sights in the company of an expert local guide, then you’re free to explore as you wish. Everywhere there are sights associated with the city’s most famous resident, Mozart, who played the harpsichord aged three, composed rudimentary music at five and wrote his first opera when he was 11!
Please note lunch is not included on this full day excursion to Salzburg; however, the ship will offer a packed lunch. We return to the ship for another splendid dinner.
For many, today’s visit to Vienna will be one of the highlights of the cruise. The city’s very name provokes images of elegance, fine music, wide boulevards, Baroque architecture and a rich tapestry of peoples who were drawn here from all corners of Europe. For 200 years until the First World War, Vienna was the cultural centre of Europe and many of the showpiece buildings, galleries, aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches you see today were built to reflect its imperial status. The city’s most iconic monument is the breathtaking Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, whose striking multi-colored roof and huge Gothic South Tower dominate the skyline. There’s also the colossal Hofburg, the former royal court that is now home to a collection of museums, the Crown Jewels and the Spanish Riding School, and where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs. Then there are the lavish Imperial Apartments and an outstanding collection of relics of the Holy Roman Empire, including, allegedly, the saber of Charlemagne himself. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, which contains the world’s fourth largest collection of paintings, is just across the road. This morning we have a tour with a local guide offering insights into why Vienna is one of Europe’s great capitals – the seat of the Habsburg emperors and home to some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and, of course, a whole family of Strausses.
During the afternoon you’re free to explore as you wish. Take a stroll in the Prater, notable for the huge Ferris wheel that features in several Cold War spy thrillers. Or, for something quite different, visit the Schönbrunn Palace, a former royal residence now housing a range of world-class museums and galleries. Perhaps, though, just take a stroll through Vienna’s atmospheric side streets, or enjoy a coffee and a slice of delicious Sachertorte in one of the lovely coffee houses.
This evening we’ve arranged truly the ‘icing on the cake’: no visit to Vienna is complete without a live musical experience, so after dinner, we have a classical recital on board. To hear this exquisite music played in the city of its creation makes a wonderful finale to the day.
Enjoy a leisurely morning as we cruise majestically through Hungary’s peaceful pastoral landscape towards Budapest.
After lunch, we enjoy a sightseeing tour of this captivating city, which truly lives up to its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Danube’. The twin cities of Buda, built around the hilltop fortress, and Pest, with its wide boulevards, were fought over through the centuries. The Ottomans ruled here for 150 years before being ousted in the late 17th century, but their legacy lives on in the many thermal baths fed by hot springs, giving rise to Budapest’s other sobriquet – the ‘City of Spas’. After the end of Ottoman rule, Budapest became an imperial city of the Habsburg Empire, attracting great cultural and commercial wealth. Castle Hill is Budapest in microcosm: two churches, seven museums, and a theatre among streets and squares with their own special atmosphere and a dramatic view across the river to the awe-inspiring neo-Gothic Parliament Building. Budapest’s endless galleries, museums, outstanding Art Nouveau architecture, and excellent shopping offer a fittingly elegant end to your Danube cruise.
This evening’s Gala Dinner closes with a Hungarian folklore show, giving you time to bid farewell to your traveling companions and reflect on all the inspirational places, sights and sounds you have experienced on a truly ‘imperial’ cruise.

Melodies of the Danube River Cruise with AmaWaterways – Bratislava to Vienna, (Day 3)
February 9th, 2020 | 5 Comments
Enjoy the third day of the Melodies of the Danube River Cruise by joining me in Bratislava for a morning tour, then cruising to Vienna for a night. Learn more about AmaWaterways’ incomparable AmaMagna cruise ship, as well.
If you are following along on my Melodies of the Danube river cruise with AmaWaterways, you’ll already have read all about Day 1, and Day 2 in Budapest.
Disclosure: my mother and I were hosted on a 7 night Melodies of the Danube river cruise with AmaWaterways. No requirements or stipulations were made for a positive review. As always, all opinions are my own.
Our third day just happened to be my birthday! Let me tell you, one of the best ways you could ever spend your birthday is on an AmaWaterways cruise! I didn’t plan to be cruising on my birthday; just call it luck. 😎However, I was extremely happy to have this added bonus on my trip.
How would you like to wake up to this ever changing view from your bed on the morning of your birthday? You can, on the Melodies of the Danube river cruise, or any other AmaWaterways cruise.
At 4:00 am we went through the Gabčikovo lock, the largest lock (19.9m/65.2′) on our cruise. This information is given to us on our Daily Cruiser so that if we would have liked to get up to experience going through the lock, we could have asked for a wake up call (or simply set an alarm).
Later that morning, we passed a bridge that was in mid-construction and I had to take a photo as I just thought it was so interesting, especially from our perspective on the river.
Melodies of the Danube River Cruise with AmaWaterways – Bratislava to Vienna, Day 3
“Coronation City” Walking Tour
After a filling breakfast, Mum and I headed to the lobby to join our group which was going ashore for a walking tour of Bratislava. We met our tour guide just off the ship and walked a for a few minutes and we were already in the city center. We checked out this beautifully detailed bronze map of the city before continuing.
With a history going back 2000 years, Bratislava, surprisingly is one of the youngest city capitals in Europe. It is known as the Coronation City because 11 Hungarian kings and 8 royal spouses were crowned here. Bratislava is a mixture of old and new as you can see in the picture below.
The largest square in Bratislava is the Hviezdoslav Square. Don’t ask me how to pronounce this name because I don’t know (😂) , but what I do know is that Hviezdoslav was a very famous and important Slovakian poet.
Directly across from his statue is the beautiful Slovak National Theatre. The building’s curved Neo Renaissance style and ornate architecture is stunning.
I zoomed in on this detail at the top of a nearby building for the exquisite artwork high above the square.
Walking further along, behind the statue of Hviezdoslav, we came across another statue of someone probably a bit more familiar: Hans Christian Andersen with some of his fairytale creatures. No, he wasn’t born here, but this statue was erected to commemorate a visit he made to this capital city in 1841.
Our guide told us about Bratislava’s main source of income, the population, the importance of the auto industry, cost of living and other general facts about the city. Of course, I had to ask about food, but I’ll get to that later. Art is not in short supply in Bratislava: there are so many statues, fountains, and monuments throughout the city!
We walked along the gorgeous tree lined street until we reached a main road where we turned in another direction.
St. Martin’s Cathedral is an imposing structure in this part of Bratislava. The bells were ringing loudly as we walked nearby, and it was beautiful to hear.
This part of the city led us into the older neighborhood with gorgeous buildings and tiny cobblestoned streets, cafes, and old antique shops.
The Old Town
Soon, we were in a more bustling part of town. There were lots more restaurants, souvenir shops, art stores, and gift shops. Michael’s Gate (at the end) is the only surviving gate from when there were fortifications around the city and four gates from which to enter.
A “Franz Liszt played here” plaque.
There’s also a plaque to commemorate Mozart visiting and performing here when he was only six years old!
We came upon a lovely bakery near the main square in Old Town. The square was a magical place and not at all overrun with tourists as many other places are.
Mum and I had to pop in to the bakery to see what types of pastries are popular in Bratislava. However, I spied the most unusual cake and just had to have a slice to try, after all, it was my birthday. And yes, it was a wonderful as it looks: chocolate meringues on top of a moist chocolate cake!
After our walking tour, our guide let us have some time to discover Bratislava on our own. Mum and I stayed in Old Town as we both really liked it as there was so much to see.
Remember I told you that there were lots of statues in Bratislava? Well, one of the most popular and well-known is this one, which is said to be like a peeping Tom poking out of a manhole. Pretty unique, isn’t it?
Our guide met us after our leisure time and showed us a board in front of a restaurant and explained a little about Slovakian cuisine, as I had asked. It’s too bad I wasn’t able to sample one of each!
Afterwards, we made our way back to the ship as we were set to leave Bratislava at noon. Once on board, guests could choose to have a post excursion stretch with Marcelo (the Wellness Manager) in the Zen Wellness Studio. Marcelo also led after lunch Digestive Walks on the Sundeck everyday as well as all the resistance band, high intensity and yoga sessions (you’ll meet lovely Marcelo in a later post.)
Lunch Onboard the AmaMagna
As an avid lover of Indian cuisine, I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that one of our lunch options was naan bread, curry, rice, chutney, and more. You see, I recall just how delicious a similar meal was from my last cruise on the AmaCerto and the bar was placed high! This meal was just as phenomenal, if not better and I’m going to admit, I had seconds!
My mother, who isn’t a big fan of Indian cuisine, was even impressed: she loved it, too! Of course, there was much more to choose from–as always, there’s something for everyone. It wasn’t long after we boarded that we were already on our way to Vienna, passing the Bratislava Castle.
As we were having lunch, one of the best views was of Devin Castle and its ruins.
Many legends exist about damsels being locked in this turret.
Once we passed the castle and ruins, we were in Austria. (Devin Castle is on the border of Slovakia with Austria.)
Cruising on the Melodies of the Danube River Cruise in Austria
We had the afternoon to spend as we chose as we cruised the Danube. The every changing scenery was fantastic.
Aboard the AmaMagna Cruise Ship
Allow me to show you more of the public areas of this amazing ship. Remember that the AmaMagna is twice as wide as other river cruise ships, so to say it’s rather spacious is an understatement.
The Bar and Lounge Area
The Sundeck
Enjoying the glorious sunshine was easy on the top deck of the AmaMagna! When it’s warm enough, there’s a beautiful pool for a swim, or to just dip your toes. There’s also a chess set, yoga and other exercise classes are held here, or you can simply lie on the lounge chairs (as you can see, this was my choice!)
On our third day of our cruise, the high was 69˚F (22˚C) so it was lovely to be outside, whether sitting or walking laps around the sundeck.
AmaWaterways Family Reunion Party
Guests who have sailed with AmaWaterways in the past were invited to meet other return guests in the lounge at the AmaWaterways Family Reunion party. Lovely hors d’oeuvres and bubbly were served as we were hosted by our Cruise Manager, Cesario.
Belcanto Duo
The clip above is the best way for me to share with you one of the talented groups that we had on the AmaMagna. Belcanto Duo is a husband and wife who perform opera together. We enjoyed them immensely!
Dinner Before Arriving in Vienna
After my big Indian lunch, I wanted something lighter for dinner, so I skipped the antipasti and chose the creamy leek soup with crispy leeks, croutons and foam: perfection. My mother chose the same.
Next we both opted for the goat cheese vegetable strudel with champagne sauce. Many of you know my love of goat cheese so you can imagine how happy I was with this dish! Paired with a lovely dry Reisling and I was delighted!
Since I had eaten such light first courses, I had room for dessert (surprise, surprise!) I chose the tiramisu, nougat sauce and berries. A lovely ending to our meal.
Vienna by Night
Mum didn’t want to have a very late night so she decided not to go into Vienna once we docked at 9:30 p.m. I was going to go into the city alone, but then met up with some other guests I had met earlier, so the four of us went into Vienna together. We shared a taxi, as the central part of the city isn’t near the Danube, however, it was only about a 10 minute ride.
As you can see from the photos above, St. Stephen’s Cathedral which is in the center of Vienna, was lit up beautifully! I was so glad I had gone into the city at night as it had a completely different atmosphere from the daytime (which you’ll see in my next post.)
The photo below shows a gorgeous Baroque monument which was built in thanks to God and the Holy Trinity for those who survived The Plague.
My new-found friends and I found an Italian restaurant and had some wine (and pistachios) at the bar while we chatted. It was a lovely way to spend my birthday evening!
Instead of taking a taxi back to the AmaMagna, it was such a beautiful night, we decided to walk even though it would be about 45 minutes. It was a good way to burn off some calories from the day’s wonderful cuisine.
When we arrived at the ship, we all went straight to bed as we had a big day ahead of us back in Vienna.

Such a luxurious sounding trip! I would love to travel the Danube and see so many of those cities from the river! Amawaterways sounds like a delightfully decadent way to travel!
Absolutely the best, Ann!
Ah, now you’re getting into my old stomping grounds. Spent a couple of years in Vienna back in the 90s and got over to Bratislava once in a while. I see its changed quite a bit. It still had a distinct “Eastern bloc” feel back then, and wasn’t nearly as spruced up and ready tourism back then. But even then it was a lovely little city. Can’t imagine a nicer way to arrive than by luxury river cruise. I could get used to that!
How wonderful to have had that experience, Frank! You’ll need to go back and yes, an AmaWaterways cruise would be the way to do it! :)

River cruises to vienna, about vienna.
Austria’s historic and beautiful capital is a mainstay destination on the many cruises which explore the Danube River and is one of Europe’s most celebrated capital cities. To embark on a Vienna river cruise is to experience the beauty and elegance of Austria's capital city; to learn of it's rich culture and history; and to sail alongside stunning architecture. These things are what truly puts Vienna on the map.
Exploring Vienna
Vienna’s State Opera House is also one of the world’s most prestigious musical venues and the first building to be reconstructed from the city’s expansion fund. It’s a Neo-Renaissance wonder and features a beautiful interior, with its stunning marble staircases being a particular high point. The Austrian Parliament Building is another key structure and the place where the country’s parliament still sits today. One of the largest and most distinctive structures on the Ringstrasse, it’s built in the Greek Revival style and has over 100 rooms including the celebrated Hall of Pillars. The Rathaus or Town Hall is an imposing Gothic structure which is home to the city council but also open to visitors, offering them a fascinating look at its history. The Art History Museum and the Natural History Museum are also notable attractions, though identical in structure and design, their contents are very different. Whichever you choose to explore depends on your interests but either way, you’re in for an architectural treat.
Vienna Tips
A trip to one of Vienna’s famous coffee houses is a must if you’re a fan of the drink and indeed, there are dozens of different blends to choose from. Melange is a popular local brew and similar to a cappuccino. As far as an accompanying snack goes, a slice of Sachertorte is a must.

Highlights of the Danube Cruise from Vienna
A composition of culture and relaxation, history and indulgence..
From Vienna to Esztergom, Budapest, Bratislava, Krems, Melk and Engelhartszell (Passau) to Vienna.
Vienna has produced some of the world’s most famous composers: Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven – all of them were either born in the Austrian capital or lived here. Were they inspired by the Danube? Possibly, seeing as the river brought so many different cultures and ethnicities to the cities located on its banks. Vienna’s imperial grandeur, Budapest’s breathtaking examples of Hungarian art nouveau and Bratislava’s almost anarchic stylistic mixture of socialism and Baroque. And music is constantly in the air – those with two left feet will be pleased to know that it’s not all Viennese waltzes.
Once you've been in Vienna for a few hours, you won't want to leave again so soon. Instead, you want to visit the countless cafés where the traditional Viennese coffee house culture is still alive today. Also contributing to the fascination for this city is the great history surrounding the emperors, Sissi and the Habsburgs with their pompous lifestyle. Or you can listen to the sounds of Viennese classical music. In addition, the Austrian capital is also a culinary delight. It is not for nothing that the famous Wiener Schnitzel and Sachertorte can be found almost everywhere in the world now.
On one bank of the Danube is hilly Buda with its Fisherman’s Bastion and Castle Hill; on the other, there’s flat Pest with its House of Parliament. These two beautiful districts couldn’t be more different. Perhaps that’s why it took until 1873 for the two cities on opposite sides of the river to merge and form Budapest.
Slovakia’s capital is situated exactly at the point where the country meets Austria and Hungary. This makes it the only capital city in the world that borders more than one neighbouring country. Due to its location, Bratislava has been an ethnic melting pot since ancient times. This influence can be seen in every corner of the city.
It’s so easy to relax on our ships that it almost seems as though they were built for this purpose only. Sit back, allow yourself to unwind and enjoy the warm temperatures as the scenery drifts by. Our aim is to help you to achieve complete relaxation and replenish your energy so that you finish your cruise invigorated, inspired and ready to get back to everyday life. Enjoy massages with nourishing oils and essences, facials to help your skin feel fully replenished and beauty treatments that will leave you looking radiant.
1st Day Vienna
This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something. The locals sound as though they are singing when they speak, and it is customary for certain business owners to address their regular customers with their full title. That’s just the way things are done here. With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year-round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!
2nd Day Vienna Dep 06:30 pm

Once the capital of Hungary, Esztergom sits right on the bank of the Danube and can be admired directly from the river. The castle tower and mighty basilica form an amazing sight, rising up from the steep bank of the Danube. This is a view you’ll definitely want to photograph during your Danube cruise. So, it’s a good thing that A-ROSA ships have such pleasant sun decks!
The view when the small tourist train approaches the summit of the castle of Esztergom will surely amaze you. In front of you, the largest neoclassical basilica in Hungary - 118 metres long and 48 metres wide - awaits. Its huge green dome towers far over the city and simply takes your breath away. Before you reach the Basilica, you'll hear all about this impressive place and the city of Esztergom. In addition to a small historical chapel, you can also visit the main nave of the Basilica with its gigantic altar. The altar piece is the largest painting in the world, painted on a single canvas. After a fascinating look around, you'll return by train to your A-ROSA ship.

And if you go out onto the sun deck of your A-ROSA ship, you’ll also have an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building. The perfect way to experience a stunning city.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond
Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest
Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.
Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.
While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.
What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?
The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.
Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?
The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.
Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.
Is a Danube river cruise worth it?
Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.
On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.
What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?
One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).
Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.
Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.
And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.
Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?
Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.
How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?
Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.
Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

Amadeus Riva cruise review — spectacular memories on the Danube
Gillian bowditch hops aboard a new river tour and finds there’s no better way to see the magnificent capitals of central europe.
B y the time you are in the market for a river cruise down the Danube, there is a whole degree of discernment that needs to be accommodated. From the crispness of the Egyptian cotton sheets and the fluffiness of the robes to the size of the walk-in wardrobe and the plumpness of the pillows, standards must be met.
The Amadeus Riva has this licked. Launched in 2023, the five-star floating hotel is shipshape and Bristol fashion: teabags proudly from Yorkshire, fresh flowers that wilted not a petal on our seven-night voyage from Passau to Budapest then back to Linz.
As it was my first cruise I had some preconceived ideas. Some were justified — it’s hard not to succumb to the inevitable herd mentality, although it was easier to escape the enforced jollities than I had expected — but many were not. River travel is much more soothing than any other form, and the Danube is a charming, surprisingly rural river, despite being a working waterway and the second-longest river in Europe.
The balance of excursions to private time was judged well, with one city or attraction to explore each day. First stop, medieval Regensburg, which was the first of seven Unesco world heritage sites on the trip.
• Scenic Eclipse II review — the most luxurious cruise around Scotland
Advertisement
Our guide was sympathetic when we decided to escape the tyranny of the tour flag too. There’s something charming about discovering a city by yourself, slipping into the cool interior of a baroque church or lingering over a courtyard that you might otherwise stride through. Well-informed local guides are part of every excursion along with personal headsets for those who enjoy a guided tour.
On day two we jumped off the ship and onto a coach to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the backdrop to The Sound of Music . In August the hills are alive with the sound of tourists. To escape the hordes we walked along the footpath overlooking this chocolate-box town nestled into the Austrian Alps on the River Salzach, before descending to take in another magnificent cathedral.
Anyone suffering from a deficit of the ecclesiastical baroque will be cured on this cruise. From the Wedgewood blue church of Dürnstein to the splendour of Melk Abbey, an 11th-century working Benedictine Abbey, there is no shortage of places to worship — that’s before you even get to the magnificent cathedrals of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.
Those three capital cities in three consecutive days constituted the remarkable finale of the trip. There is no other way it would have been possible to do this without a rigmarole of packing bags and moving hotel. Each city offered up some spectacular memory, not least the Albertina Museum in Vienna, whose almost empty state rooms housed works by Albrecht Dürer and drawings by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
The best way to think of this Danube cruise is as a smorgasbord of culture — a tempting tapas that leaves you wanting more. My first act on arriving home was to plan another trip to Vienna with my daughter next year.
Talking of food, the chefs did a good job with the limited kitchen space. Breakfast buffets were robust and plentiful; lunch was either formal in the dining room or light in the upstairs lounge and dinner was four courses, except when it was seven. Packed meals were available for day trips. The sommeliers were unstinting with the wine. Everything was included and there was no mandatory tipping or hidden expenses.
Rob, our cruise master, gave it his all, even switching from lederhosen to spangles to boogie the night away to some golden oldies. The staff were charming and accommodating in equal measure. On the final night after dinner the Amadeus Riva cruised the length of Budapest, where the fairytale bridges and buildings on either side of the banks of the Danube were lit up like the set of a Christmas ballet.
In the balmy evening air, with a glass of fizz in our hands and the strains of Johann Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz undercut by the lapping of the water against the side of the boat, this famous waterway that stretches from the Black Forest to the Black Sea was at its magnificent best and we left the trip on a high note.
Gillian Bowditch was a guest of Great Rail Journeys ( greatrail.com ). The Beautiful Blue Danube cruise costs from £1,595pp for seven nights, full-board on Riva’s sister ship, Imperial, including drinks, excursions, all transfers, flights from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Munich via London, plus one night’s B&B in London.
