6 Best Galapagos Cruises For Every Kind of Traveler

Galapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises in the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anyplace else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability and toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here's everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best itineraries to book now.

  • Best luxury Galapagos cruise
  • Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing
  • Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers
  • Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers
  • Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Best Galapagos cruises for families

When is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands .

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are six of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

Silver Origin cruising the Galapagos Islands.

A suite on board Silver Origin comes with butler service.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

There’s no more luxurious way to sail the Galapagos Islands than on  Silversea's Silver Origin , a ship custom-built for cruising these islands. Silver Origin is Silversea’s first destination-specific ship and includes several features meant to minimize its environmental impact. The all-suite ship can carry up to 100 passengers, is all-inclusive down to the premium spirits in your stateroom's minibar, and includes the luxury cruise line’s signature butler service. There’s also a salon and fitness center on board, a rarity for ships sailing in this region. Most itineraries on the Silver Origin are seven nights, but longer cruises are typically scheduled around winter holidays. The Silver Origin sails the north, central, and western loops of the Galapagos Islands.

Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing

This region may be better known for its landscapes and wildlife, but the Galapagos Islands are also an excellent place for stargazing. And there’s no better Galapagos cruise ship for stargazing than the  Celebrity Flora . The 100-passenger vessel feels more like a luxury yacht than an expedition ship. It has a stargazing platform on its top deck and provides binoculars to help guests spot constellations as the ship cruises along the equator. The modern expedition ship also offers a glamping experience that includes a naturalist-guided stargazing session and a luxurious night of glamping under the stars. Prefer to sleep in your bed on board? Have dinner under the stars at the ship’s restaurant before heading back to your suite. The Celebrity Flora ’s Galapagos itineraries range from seven to 16 nights.

Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers

Lindblad Expeditions has been cruising the Galapagos Islands for more than 50 years. It now sails to the Galapagos year-round in partnership with National Geographic, giving guests the chance to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and more. A staff of expert guides is on board to help travelers spot wildlife and better understand the volcanic landscapes, mangrove thickets, and seagrasses they encounter. Activities include unforgettable snorkeling adventures, hikes through pristine wilderness, and walks along remote beaches. Lindblad’s newest Galapagos Islands cruise ship, the National Geographic Islander II , feels more like a boutique hotel than an expedition ship and carries just 48 passengers in 26 suites. Some itineraries offer advanced divers the chance to commune with a variety of marine life. And while rugged adventures may await travelers off the ship, each suite offers travelers plenty of comfort: They come equipped with flat-screen TVs, in-room espresso machines, and bathrooms with double sinks.

Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers

Galapagos cruises aren’t cheap, especially if you’re sailing solo. Hurtigruten makes cruising the Galapagos Islands more affordable by waiving the single supplement on several of its Galapagos cruises. Hurtigruten Galapagos cruises range from seven to 14 days in length and take place on the MS Santa Cruz II , a ship that comes equipped with panga boats, kayaks, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and a glass-bottom boat for viewing marine life. The ship carries a maximum of 90 passengers, and its operations are carbon-neutral. There’s a small gym and a hot tub on board. Regular prices start around $8,500 for a one-week cruise. Look for sales to bring your price down even further.

Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants on board either ship, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. On board both ships, you’ll find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and plunge pools.

For an adventure your kids will never forget, hop on board an Adventures by Disney cruise of the Galapagos Islands. Just be sure to wait until your kids are at least seven years old. This is the minimum age for most Galapagos cruises, though Disney recommends this itinerary for children eight and older. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s a small ship expedition itinerary with a hint of Disney magic in a setting fit for a fairy tale. Adventures by Disney's Galapagos itineraries span nine days and visit about 15 sites.

The Best Galápagos Island Cruises

A cruise is one of the best ways to see all that this remote Ecuadorian archipelago has to offer.

royal galapagos tours

There's no better way to cover ground on your trip to the Galápagos Islands than to sail on a multiday cruise.

Galápagos National Park regulates the number and type of tourist boats that are allowed to operate in the famously biodiverse area. This helps with overcrowding, conserving the environment, and minimizing stress on the amazing wildlife of the Galápagos. Many tourist boats in the area offer five- to seven-day all-inclusive itineraries that are strictly monitored by the national park officials. There are also cruises operating illegally, so you have to take care when choosing a tour.

To help you find a cruise fit for your wildest dreams, we've rounded up 14 of the best options, whether you prefer a small ship or bigger vessel, an action-packed itinerary or a casual drift around this remote archipelago in the Pacific.

Small Galápagos Cruises

Most of the cruise ships in the Galápagos Islands carry fewer than 20 passengers. These vessels, typically motor yachts, can't provide some of the luxurious amenities available on larger ships, but they do ensure personalized service, a more intimate experience, and quicker trips on and off the boat.

Quasar Grace

The 18-passenger Grace was once owned by Grace Kelly. She and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon on the motor yacht, and now you can sleep in their bedroom, the Grace Kelly Suite, which is one of nine rooms aboard. The ship sails three routes, taking eight to 15 days, and guests get plenty of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and panga rides along the way.

Ecoventura Letty

The Letty is one of the best full-service motor yachts in the Galápagos for value. This 20-passenger boat is a solid option with great service and comfortable accommodations. A trip on the Letty promises a 10 guest-per-guide ratio, as well as dinner with the captain. You get a choice between two seven-day itineraries, each including opportunities to snorkel, hike, and learn about the local wildlife from knowledgeable guides.

Ecoventura Origin

The 20-passenger Origin is like a floating boutique hotel. All 10 cabins are on the same deck, there’s an open-bar policy, and Wi-Fi is available on board. A unique hull design means this ship is also one of the most fuel-efficient in the Galápagos. Like the Letty , Ecoventura's Origin sails two routes around the archipelago, each lasting eight days and providing plenty of chances to get up close to nature.

Medium Galápagos Ships

If you're stuck between whether to book your cruise on a small ship or a large vessel — both have their advantages — one of these medium-sized boats accommodating 20 to 50 passengers could be the best of both worlds. You'll enjoy more space, a larger group to mingle with, and sometimes a wider variety of activities and services to accommodate more people.

Quasar Evolution

The 32-passenger Evolution was designed by Adriana Hoyos, a furniture and interior designer renowned for her work on luxury hotels across the Americas. Its cabins have a contemporary boutique-hotel aesthetic. There are indoor and outdoor lounges, a bar, and a library. Passengers can choose between three itineraries, ranging from eight to 15 days and taking different routes around the Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Islander II

All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Endeavour II

The 96-passenger National Geographic Endeavour II has Wi-Fi, a doctor, SUP gear, a clear-bottom zodiac, a free digital photo kiosk with iMacs, and a spa. Like the Islander II, food brought from the mainland is carefully prepared and packaged to prevent the introduction of invasive species to the Galápagos Islands.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. It has two 1,288-square-foot penthouse suites (the largest in the Galápagos), naturalist-guided stargazing sessions, and outdoor cabanas that you can reserve for a unique glamping experience.

Silversea Silver Origin

The 100-passenger Silver Origin is an all-suite ship with accommodations up to 1,722 square feet, some with in-room espresso machines and mini-bars, private verandas, and butler service. Tips are included in the price. The ship also has a fitness center, a spa, a communal fire pit, and two restaurants. There are more than 100 cruise options, some lasting as long as 18 days.

Galápagos Catamarans

These small boats have a unique hull design, like the dual parallel runners of a sled, that many believe makes catamarans more stable in the water.

Celebrity Xploration

The 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration is arguably the most luxurious catamaran in the Galápagos. Its eight suites and junior suites feature extras like binoculars, personal refrigerators, a pillow menu, and room service. The catamaran cruises two routes, a northern route and a southern route, both lasting seven nights.

Anahi Yacht Catamaran

The Anahi has eight rooms accommodating up to 16 passengers, including two spacious suites. Travelers can expect traditional yacht design details, like polished wooden floors and portrait windows. There are multiple itineraries to choose from, each stopping off at different islands and exploring different parts of the Galápagos. The cruises range in duration from four to 15 days.

Royal Galapagos Cormorant II

The Cormorant II can carry 16 passengers in nine cabins, all with private balconies. Some of the suites even come with walk-in closets and their own Jacuzzi tubs. Travelers can opt for a four- to eight-day cruise with inclusive excursions such as snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.

Live-aboard Dive Boats

If you’re a certified scuba diver, a live-aboard dive boat might be for you. These boats are built to accommodate the specific needs (and gear) of divers, and they navigate special routes and itineraries that include top dive sites. The Galápagos is home to whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, manta rays, sunfish, and many other marine creatures.

Explorer Ventures Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer

Explorer Ventures ' two live-aboard vessels, the Humboldt Explorer and Tiburon Explorer , accommodate 16 passengers each. The Humboldt has a large dive deck, which makes it easier to get into and out of your dive gear. The eight-day excursion includes up to 19 dives and the 11-day excursion includes up to 28.

Galápagos Nortada

The 84-foot Nortada has only four cabins and can sleep eight guests. Passengers can congregate on the bridge, the galley, or in the dining room and lounge. Dive trips last either seven or 14 nights, and itineraries include up to four dives a day.

Galápagos Aggressor III

The Aggressor ships have been cruising around the Galápagos Islands since 1993. The Galápagos Aggressor III accommodates 16 passengers. Charters last a week and include four dives a day plus two land excursions.

My first cruise to the Galapagos: The good, the bad and the absolutely adorable

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

I'm fresh off a Galapagos cruise , but you wouldn't know it. I have no sunburn to speak of, I wasn't eaten alive by mosquitoes (for once), and I'm not suffering the ill effects of jet lag because I didn't have to adjust to a large time difference. However, that doesn't mean the destination didn't leave a mark on me.

Before starting this adventure, I wasn't sure what to expect from a Galapagos trip. I'd seen photos from friends and fellow travel writers who had visited the islands. Still, pictures don't do justice to the varying hues of blue-footed booby feet, nor do they properly convey the stench of sea lion excrement that — in contrast to its producers — is decidedly not cute.

What awaited me were some of the quietest, most untouched islands I've ever been fortunate enough to visit. From turquoise water and friendly animals to sun that's another level of hot, here's what would draw me back to the Galapagos in a heartbeat, what might make me think twice about returning and, ultimately, why the pros outweigh the cons.

What I liked

The animals.

royal galapagos tours

Last year, when I embarked on my first-ever expedition cruise to the Arctic , I thought the number of animals — polar bears, reindeer, whales — I saw was impressive. But the Arctic has nothing on the Galapagos when it comes to creature sightings. For me, the animals were the highlight of the trip.

Within five minutes of arriving at the dock on the island of Baltra, I spotted brightly colored crabs, a marine iguana and some sort of pinniped (unsure if it was a sea lion or a seal from a distance) before I even boarded my ship.

Throughout the rest of the journey, I saw 12 of what the cruise line — Hurtigruten Expeditions — refers to as the "big 15." They included flightless cormorants, blue-footed boobies, land and marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises, Galapagos sea lions, Galapagos flamingos and even the elusive Galapagos hawk. I also saw plenty of others — fur seals, Sally Lightfoot crabs, great blue herons — that weren't on the list.

The authenticity

royal galapagos tours

Cruise ships that sail the Galapagos must adhere to strict rules, including one that states a certain percentage of the crew must be from Ecuador. Another requires that travelers be accompanied by official guides, certified through the Galapagos National Park system, when they visit uninhabited areas.

Because of those regulations, passengers can interact closely with locals who know the area better than anyone else.

If you have a question about the local foods served on board — think ceviche, plantains and other delicious specialties — the waiters quickly jump in with answers. Off the ship, guides can tell you anything you want to know about the local flora and fauna. Their passion for what they do is both evident and contagious. (Never before have I taken such an interest in birds.)

The welcoming, no-nonsense nature of the people who live in the few populated areas of the Galapagos is another endearing trait. During my trip, I visited several local shops and businesses where the owners were eager to show off their work.

One of the most notable was Trapiche Ecological — a remote farm on the inhabited island of Santa Cruz — which produces chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and moonshine made from sugarcane. The owners showed me and others around with hospitality that I'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

The chocolate

royal galapagos tours

There's something about Ecuadorian chocolate that makes all other chocolate seem inferior. The authentic stuff is made by hand with ingredients that you'd never find on a Hershey's label, and it's some of the best you could ever eat.

A visit to a chocolate maker is both educational and tasty. I learned about the growing and harvesting of cocoa beans as well as how they're crushed into nibs and powder (which are used in everything from edible bars to cocoa butter).

On my visit, I saw how those fancy flavored chocolates you find in gift boxes are made. It's an interesting process that involves several layers of chocolate that's skillfully melted, mixed, layered into trays and chilled to create tiny, edible works of art. I couldn't resist coming home with several bars.

What I didn't care for

The climate.

royal galapagos tours

Given the Galapagos' location near the equator, I knew the sun would be intense. However, it's one thing to know about the intensity and another thing entirely to experience it.

Temperatures for my February sailing were in the high 70s to mid-80s, but the sun made things feel much hotter. I would have been toast without protective clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF.

Between the intensity of the rays, the amount of zinc needed to protect my skin and the lack of shade on the islands, I was constantly sweaty and sticky — and the humidity didn't help matters. I understand that the climate of the Galapagos is essential for the well-being of the many animals that call it home. Still, it was one of my least favorite qualities of the region.

royal galapagos tours

If you're considering a Galapagos cruise, you should know that it's unlikely to meet your needs if your goal is to relax.

On my voyage, we had two to three excursions per day, and most places we visited were outdoors. That meant we were out in the blazing sun for hours. The combination of heat and active pursuits — snorkeling, kayaking, hiking — left me feeling exhausted by day two.

Understandably, the Galapagos is a bucket-list destination, which means most people don't travel there to sit around on the ship while the region's phenomenal scenery passes them by. With that in mind, many ships based in the area feature bare-bones amenities. The vessels do not boast onboard spas, passenger cabins do not include TVs, and no onboard activities are scheduled during the day.

It's assumed that most, if not all, passengers will participate in each of the excursions. The pace can be enough to leave you needing a vacation after your vacation.

royal galapagos tours

Going to the Galapagos, I had one goal: find the blue-footed boobies. Blue is an uncommon color on animals, so something about those cerulean gams appeals to me. To my delight, I encountered the birds on two different occasions. But the first time, it wasn't their feet that caught my attention. It was the stench.

I had joined a small group of fellow passengers on a scenic sail around Isabela Island. As our inflatable boat approached a rock cliff, we saw marine iguanas sunning themselves and dozens of boobies preening between mating dances. I couldn't yet see their feet, but a sharp smell hit my nostrils like a slap in the face.

As we neared, the coloring of their feet became more evident, but so did the white hue that adorned the rocks — bird excrement. I know it's natural, but I wasn't expecting such pretty animals to smell so un pretty.

I had a similar experience during a landing on Fernandina Island, where we were surrounded by curious sea lions. They, too, smelled like the back end of a seafood processing plant.

I realize this is a petty complaint in a place as stunning as the Galapagos, but it's worth noting since it caught me and some of my fellow cruisers off guard.

What surprised me

The serenity.

royal galapagos tours

With roughly 97% of the Galapagos preserved as a national park, I was expecting the islands to be wild, and I was right. But what I wasn't expecting was the quiet. It wasn't complete silence but rather a calm that teemed with sounds not normally present in my daily life.

You don't hear cell phone text alerts or traffic in the Galapagos. Instead, you hear the soft, wet sounds of marine iguanas expelling the salt water they've ingested while feeding, the gentle swish of waves rolling up onto the shoreline and the unmistakable barking of sea lions as they communicate with one another.

It's a strange kind of din that reminded me how busy nature is, even when humans feel like there isn't much happening.

The differences between islands

royal galapagos tours

I was surprised to discover how different the islands in the western Galapagos were from each other. Some were inhabited; most weren't. Some were rocky, devoid of vegetation and provided no place for us to land, necessitating scenic sailing only. Others offered welcoming beaches with soft sand. Some islands were home to colorful flowers and lush vegetation and were well suited to grow coffee, cocoa beans and sugarcane.

The wildlife was just as varied. Some islands are home to giant tortoises, while others house blue-footed boobies, Galapagos penguins and flightless cormorants. Still, others were packed with marine iguanas, Sally Lightfoot crabs and sea lions, all coexisting harmoniously.

I was surprised to learn how the local iguanas and some of the islands' birds assist one another. The birds pick ticks off the iguanas; the birds get a meal, and the iguanas stay free of pests. When a bird has cleaned off all of the ticks, it poops on the iguana, leaving a mark, so other birds know to look elsewhere for food.

At the start of the cruise, I was concerned that the daily outings would become repetitive. I quickly discovered that, although the activities are similar, you see such different things that no two excursions are alike.

The rule differences

royal galapagos tours

Expedition cruises are known for taking passengers to remote once-in-a-lifetime destinations. Because expedition ships sail to regions that are often protected, it makes sense that there are rules in place to protect both travelers and the local plants and wildlife native to the areas.

All luggage is thoroughly scanned and sniffed by dogs at the Baltra airport to prevent people from sneaking in contraband — think fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds that aren't native to the Galapagos. However, no one inspected our footwear once we boarded the ship to prevent the transfer of foreign entities between locations where the local ecosystem could be harmed. (We did have to hose off our shoes each time we came back on board.) This surprised me as the practice is common on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.

Protected areas often have rules about how close passengers can be to wildlife. That makes sense in places like the Arctic, where polar bears are a real threat. What blew my mind in the Galapagos was that the animals aren't used to predators, so they generally aren't scared of humans. They definitely didn't respect the cruise line's "stay at least 6 feet away" rule.

Their chill attitudes, mixed with curiosity, meant I frequently had to move away from animals that were coming too close to me rather than the other way around.

The post office

royal galapagos tours

One of the cutest aspects of my cruise was the makeshift "post office" on Floreana Island in what is now known as Post Office Bay.

Little more than a wooden barrel with a door, this post office requires no stamps and provides a place for visitors to leave postcards. The idea is that, after you write and address your postcards and put them in the provided Zip-Loc bag, you look through the ones already in there to see if any are addressed to a location near your home. If so, take them with you and hand-deliver them to the recipients.

I left a postcard addressed to myself, just to see if it worked. It showed up in my mailbox about two weeks later — with a stamp on it. Someone misunderstood the assignment and, instead of delivering it in person, slapped postage on it and dropped it in an actual mailbox somewhere else. It was nice to receive the postcard, and the sender's intentions were kind, but I was slightly disappointed not to meet a fellow Galapagos traveler.

Bottom line

royal galapagos tours

Although a Galapagos cruise isn't necessarily the best choice for relaxation, it's high on many travelers' bucket lists — for a good reason. No, you can't pull up a beach chair, order a cocktail or even find a bathroom on most of the islands, but that only adds to the unspoiled splendor.

Teal water crashes into rocky shorelines dotted with fine, white sand, and everything exists in a delicate balance. The largely undeveloped region is replete with animals you can't see anywhere else; you'll be amazed to learn how the creatures have adapted to survive in the region's inhospitable climate.

A visit to the Galapagos has its pros and cons, but from my experience, the former far outweighs the latter.

16 of the best Galapagos cruises

Ecuador’s galapagos islands are still best explored on a cruise, whether that’s aboard a modern high-tech yacht or an old-fashioned sail ship.

royal galapagos tours

W ith the rapid rise of land-based tours, there are more options than ever for exploring the Galapagos Islands , but no serious person would deny that cruising is still the best way to go. The routes once sailed by buccaneers, adventurers and eventually scientists are now patrolled by dozens of small cruise ships, each with its own character, itinerary and ethos, but all drawn here by the islands’ elemental magnetism.

From wallet-friendly cruise lines to almost unbelievable opulence aboard luxury yachts, the choices of how best to traverse the Galapagos can feel overwhelming. However you absorb it, there’s no mistaking the fact that this is one of the world’s most special and singular destinations – make sure you see it at its best with one of the best Galapagos cruises.

Metropolitan Touring leads a small party whale watching

1. Metropolitan Touring

With a fleet of three ships, Metropolitan Touring offers variety to match its hard-won experience in the Galapagos. In operation since the early 1950s, the company has adapted its tourism product over the decades to get the most out of the islands. The ships — the much-loved La Pinta, Santa Cruz II and Isabella II — broadly provide the same service, with expert guides leading landings and conducting lectures on board. While it’s possible to do longer cruises, one of the most popular options is to split time between cruising and spending a few nights in their excellent Finch Bay Galapagos Hotel, just outside Puerto Ayora.

Ecoventura’s Origin

2. Ecoventura

If you want to sail to this unique destination in style, then Ecoventura’s ships are a cut above their nominal rivals. Offering sweeping tours of the east or west islands, ships Origen and Theory marry excellent cuisine and comfort with enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. The evening cocktails are outstanding and the generous cabins are as comfortable as any you’ll find in the region. Nonetheless, if a superpod of dolphins turns up, don’t be surprised if you’re summoned out of bed to see them.

The Santa Cruz II, operated by Hurtigruten

3. Hurtigruten Expeditions

Originally known for its scenic voyages up and down the Norwegian coast, Hurtigruten has branched out into expedition cruising, including to this corner of South America. The ship it’s using for its Galapagos tours is the refurbished Santa Cruz II, in partnership with Metropolitan Touring. With 90 passengers, this is one of the bigger vessels sailing in the islands, close to the maximum capacity of 100 passengers allowed by local law. A science centre has been added, as well as Hurtigruten livery. Each seven-night expedition is preceded by two nights in Quito, including a trip to the smouldering Cotopaxi volcano.

A deluxe veranda suite on board Silver Origin

4. Silversea

Silversea’s dedicated Galapagos ship Silver Origin may be one of the largest legally allowed to sail in these protected waters, but it aims to show that quantity need not mean quality is sacrificed. The ship, which was built specifically to sail around this archipelago, takes in all the major sites, with options for seven or 10-day cruises covering everything from the oldest island, Española, to the youngest, Fernandina. On board, there’s a choice of restaurants, a small spa and a private balcony for every cabin.

5. G Adventures

G Adventures seeks to be a bit different with its G For Good project. In the Galapagos that means a chance to visit the locals in a small community on Floreana, some descended from eccentric German settlers who tried to set up a utopian society on the island in the 1930s. The ships vary depending on the length of time you’re looking to spend on the islands, but the Eden and Reina Silvia Voyager, each carrying 16 passengers, are two of their most frequently used.

6. Audley Travel

If you prefer the idea of shorter cruises combined with other wildlife experiences, Audley offers tailor-made tours of the islands on a number of expedition ships, which can be combined with wider exploration of Ecuador. One idea is to spend four days on the Yolita II. The ship has a capacity of just 16, meaning you’ll be exploring in small groups. Once you’ve toured these extraordinary islands, you could then move on to the Amazon to track primates and river otters, or go bird-spotting in the cloud forest.

7. Avalon Waterways

By South American standards, Ecuador and Peru are pretty amicable neighbours. They’re also in possession of two of the continent’s greatest assets: the Galapagos and breathtaking Machu Picchu. Avalon’s ambitious 20-day programme covers both in style, as well as a voyage on the Peruvian Amazon and the mind-bending Nazca Lines, a series of vast pictograms created around 1,500 years ago with the apparent goal of impressing anyone with a god’s-eye view of the land. Out in the islands, accommodation is on board the smart, 16-passenger Treasure of Galapagos, which hits up all the classic landings.

8. Galapatours

With a vast network of cruise ships and almost every imaginable option for a Galapagos vacation, Galapatours works with dozens of locally owned ships in the region. One of the most remarkable is The Master, for a trip to some of the world’s greatest dive sites at far-flung Wolf and Darwin islands. These distant islets are uninhabited and it’s not possible to make landfall but there’s no shortage of compensation in the water. It’s here that underwater photographers get those famous shots of hundreds of hammerhead sharks swimming in eerie, synchronised circles, waiting for their next meal.

9. Royal Galapagos

With a maximum of 16 passengers, Cormorant II is a luxury catamaran that offers highly personalised levels of service as you sail classic four-, five- or-eight-day cruises around the islands. It’s just one of six ships Royal Galapagos runs in the archipelago. The longer itineraries are impressively comprehensive, especially the eight-day “B” itinerary, which covers a lot of ocean, to make sure you see the wilder parts of Isabela and Fernandina Islands but get all the way out to Española at the opposite end of the archipelago, too.

10. Journey Latin America

Journey Latin America has several itineraries that include time around the islands, many of them aboard the motorised catamaran Treasure of Galapagos. On one meandering itinerary, as well as an eight-day islands cruise, you’ll have the same amount of time touring some of the Ecuadorian highlands, including visits to Quito and the mighty Cotopaxi, as well as the Las Cajas National Park near Cuenca. All that before laying eyes on blue-footed boobies and giant tortoises.

Best suited to 6+ Family friendly Y Price ££

11. Abercrombie & Kent

Abercrombie & Kent may keep its prices high, but the ships are small, guaranteeing generous landings and maximum flexibility when it comes to wildlife encounters. Most itineraries include a trip to the lesser-visited Genovesa Island in the north of the archipelago. As well as red-footed boobies, you won’t fail to notice the bold, brash frigate birds, piratical creatures that plunder the catch of other birds with the ruthlessness of the buccaneers who first settled these islands.

12. AdventureSmith

To varying degrees, everyone comes to the Galapagos looking to follow in the pioneering wake of Charles Darwin. It’s perhaps easier to feel that sense of historic exploration aboard the Mary Anne, a three-mast beauty as handsome as any vessel in the region. Travelling under sail and motor, it covers the entire archipelago on eight-day itineraries. Holding just 16 passengers, it’s popular with groups and anyone who wants to feel the power of the ocean during their visit to this singular destination.

National Geographic’s Endeavour II off Santiago Island

13. National Geographic

In some ways, the Galapagos Islands are a perfect National Geographic destination: rich history of naturalist pioneers, flabbergasting wildlife, a delicate and fascinating ecosystem. Cruises on the 96-passenger Endeavour II or its predecessor, Endeavour, have been operating here for years and as you might expect, often place a big focus on photography. This is easier in the Galapagos than most destinations — having evolved without people, the animals here are curious to the point of naivety. There’ll be no excuse for coming away with bad shots, especially having learned from some of the experts on board.

www.expeditions.com/about/fleet/national-geographic-endeavour-ii/

If you’d like to experience the Galapagos like royalty, the Grace will catch your eye. Once used by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco for part of their lavish honeymoon, today it’s available for anyone with fine tastes and deep pockets. The owner has done little to update the ship’s satisfyingly dated look, giving it a different feel to the increasingly homogenised product offered by its nominal rivals — few others offer a wooden decking and classic helm. For a slightly different feel, sister ship The Evolution is a retro beauty, too. Choose from eight- or 15-day itineraries.

Celebrity Cruises’ newest vessel, the Flora

15. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity have taken a Russian doll approach to their Galapagos fleet. Is the 100-berth Celebrity Flora too big for you? OK, how about the 48-berth Celebrity Xpedition? Still not petite enough? Well, then the 16-berth Celebrity Xpedition will be the one for you. While the mechanism of delivery can vary, each of their itineraries combines shore landings with motorised dinghy rides and snorkelling trips for scarcely believable wildlife experiences. Questions about what you’ve seen in the field can be put to expert guides during nightly briefings.

16. Aqua Expeditions

If you’re especially fond of that new superyacht smell, then the good news is that the Aqua Mare is only launched in 2022. Up to 16 passengers are carried in fine style around the archipelago, with specialised guides and inevitably plenty of Galapagoan fauna for company. The Mare was built in Italy in 1998, but is now almost unrecognisable thanks to its refit. There are gorgeous dark wood finishings and polished brass throughout, calling to mind a long since lost era of opulent cruising.

All Galapagos Tours Are Not the Same! Why Choose Us?

  • Small Groups Ensure Intimate Nature Encounters With just 14–16 guests aboard our private chartered yachts, and each departure led by two highly trained, national park-certified Nat Hab Expedition Leaders, you'll explore the Galapagos in a small group with no more than 7–8 other travelers.
  • The Best Guide-to-Guest Ratio in the Galapagos The typical ratio is 16 or 20 guests to one naturalist guide—that’s what most boat tours in the Galapagos provide. Our ratio is 7 to 8 guests per guide.  This makes a big difference! It allows us to explore in a more intimate context, and we can offer different activities at the same time: for instance, one group can snorkel while the other opts for a panga ride. And with two Expedition Leaders, you get a full interpretive experience: a naturalist guide accompanies each panga when we go out with two smaller boats for close-up exploring.
  • Private Chartered Yachts Keep Operations Within Our Control Rather than sending you through a local ship-owner who takes bookings from many sources, we run every element of our Galapagos trips—from meeting you on arrival in Quito through the chartering of our small ships to escorting you to the Quito airport for your homeward flight. Only by managing each step of our operations can we ensure that your trip is superlative—and we don’t settle for less!
  • An Exclusive Stay at Our Private Tortoise Camp on Santa Cruz For Nat Hab guests alone, we offer the chance to spend a night at our private  Tortoise Camp in the highlands of Santa Cruz, where wild tortoises roam freely over this remote parcel of private land overlooking the distant Pacific Ocean. Unique accommodations, rustic but comfortable, are in raised safari-style canvas tents and elevated treehouses (all en suite), surrounded by nature, with a communal dining room and lounge space warmed by a log fireplace.
  • The World's Finest Naturalist Guides Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the highest-quality guides in the industry. Our group of elite Galapagos Expedition Leaders averages more than 15 years’ guiding experience each. Additionally, they receive training and resources from WWF’s world-renowned scientists. Our philosophy on this is pretty simple: A nature adventure is only as good as the guide, so we simply must provide the best!  See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Secluded Snorkeling Experiences Snorkeling is the highlight for many Galapagos visitors. Inquisitive sea lions, sea turtles, penguins and schools of vividly colored fish provide endless excitement in the islands’ clear waters. But it can be disappointing if you’re traveling aboard a big ship to find dozens of fellow snorkelers surrounding you, interfering with your experience. In our small groups accompanied by two Expedition Leaders, marine life is front and center, and you’re the sole audience.
  • Kayaking & Paddleboarding for Close-Up Wildlife Encounters Come eye to eye with a sea turtle as you paddle a kayak, and look down at a marine iguana gliding past from your perch on a stand-up paddleboard: our chartered yachts are equipped with all the special modes of exploration to get you as close as possible to the captivating creatures of the Galapagos. And of course, our ships carry Zodiacs, too, so we can get close to wildlife on shore from our inflatable motorized rafts.
  • The Itinerary Makes a Difference As WWF’s conservation travel partner, we're privileged to have some of the world’s top wildlife biologists helping us develop our nature adventures. WWF is especially active in the Galapagos, and our itineraries are specifically designed to provide our small groups with the best close-up wildlife viewing experiences in the most personalized manner possible.
  • Experience More of Ecuador with a Stay in Quito Ecuador, though small in size, is one of the world's most geographically and culturally diverse countries. As a complement to your Galapagos immersion, we include a guided visit to Quito—a richer cultural experience than just flying in and out of Guayaquil, as many trips do. Experience a slice of Ecuador that is distinctly different from what you'll encounter in the Galapagos as you explore Quito's complex colonial history, including its well-preserved 16th-century Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Outstanding Galapagos Experience With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee, clearly stating that we will meet the lofty expectations we set in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company.  Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

Three Great Reasons to Visit The Galapagos

Once in a lifetime, you can walk in the footsteps of Darwin, getting closer to the natural world than you ever have or ever will, coming home with a radically new understanding of the planet. With us, you'll encounter flora found nowhere else, come face to face with fauna that has not learned to fear humans, and hike moonscapes that barely resemble Earth.

While the animals of the Galapagos Islands get the glory, the evolution and adaptation of plant life here is equally important. Check out the beautiful lava Cactus, which only grows on barren lava fields. The Prickly Pear Cactus found only on these islands. And, the magnificent Scalesia, which grows up to sixty feet tall.

Since the animals here don’t fear humans, you can truly get up close and personal, looking into the eyes of a Galapagos marine iguana, and walking among penguins – the only penguin species north of the equator. Here, you’ll discover creatures whose very existence forms the basis for one of the most famous scientific theories in history.

The Adventure

Nature lovers flock to this exotic terrain born of fire. Once, volcanos spat and lava flowed, creating an archipelago of 19 islands with a marine reserve that serve as a living museum of evolution. Extreme isolation and the convergence of three ocean currents developed the most unusual wildlife.

Expand Your Comfort Zone

On our award-winning Galapagos adventures, you'll meet amazing wildlife, trek unearthly landscapes, and see it all through the eyes of experts. You'll relax in spacious accommodations, savor globally inspired cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, and be treated to exquisite service. All while treading lightly and supporting local communities.

Leave the World a Better Place

We work hard to minimize our footprint, and Ecuador’s secretary of tourism has acknowledged our efforts. We support the community by sourcing fresh seafood from local fishermen and pillow treats from local chocolatiers. Guests have donated $1.5 million to the Galapagos Fund and helped plant 50,000 trees. Celebrity Flora, our newest ship here, features dynamic positioning to protect the seabed, silicone paint to glide with less fuel, solar panels to make electricity, and no single-use plastics.

Balance Exploration With Relaxation

A few million years ago, volcanos erupted, creating these moonscapes where lumbering tortoises, comical birds, and other wildlife evolved in isolation. Today, you can experience this wondrous environment on shore excursions led by naturalists—two each day—as active or leisurely as you choose. Climb the hills to find colonies of red-footed boobies, hike the coast to spot colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs, watch the sea lions go surfing, or just relax and enjoy the sandy beaches and deck-side bars.

Service: Little Things Make a Big Difference

All of our ships feature service so attentive, so intuitive, yet so unobtrusive, that the things you want tend to appear before you even realize you want them. On our luxurious new Celebrity Flora ® , for instance, your personal suite attendant—yes, every stateroom is a suite—helps you unpack when you arrive, brings the rich morning coffee just the way you like it, restocks your minibar seamlessly, and so much more. These islands may be primitive, but your time with us will be anything but.

Certified Experts Lead the Way

Sailings include two shore excursions per day, each the adventure of a lifetime. Onboard naturalists, certified by Galapagos National Park, lead small groups of no more than 12 explorers. Activities are curated by our highly trained team of experts and each night we brief you on upcoming adventures. On the top deck of Celebrity Flora, you can even join optional Galapagos Glamping—stargazing with the naturalists and waking to a private breakfast.

Savor Globally Inspired, Locally Sourced Cuisine

One thing makes our world-renowned cuisine, with menus crafted by a Michelin-starred chef, even better. It's the locally sourced ingredients. From the robust coffee grown on Ecuadoran plantations to the fresh local seafood, almost everything was grown, raised, or caught nearby. Then we make culinary magic in venues such as the upscale Seaside Restaurant and alfresco Ocean Grill on Celebrity Flora. In every restaurant on every ship, fine dining will be the highlight of every evening.

A Typical Day in the Galapagos

The morning.

Start the day with a leisurely breakfast, the perfect combination of coffee and fresh air. Then, get suited up with wetsuits for the day’s adventures. Get comfortably seated in your tender for your morning’s commute to your first island where you’ll find yourself surrounded by hundreds of marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and so much more. Relax at the beach, snorkel, or take in a guided hike as you get to know the incredible habitants of this island up close.

Exploring works up an appetite. Return to the ship for a freshly-prepared lunch as you recall the morning’s adventure. As you dine, your ship gently moves to your next island destination. After lunch, suit back up, hop into your tender and get ready for another afternoon of excursions. From white sand beaches to black fields of lava flows, each island presents unique discoveries.

As the evening sun begins to lower, meet at the bar to unwind and talk with fellow explorers about your experiences. Take in a briefing about what the next day holds before settling down for a gourmet dinner, full of fresh seafood and incredible local flavors. Relax, and get ready to rest up in the haven of your room for tomorrow’s adventures.

Extraordinary Yachts for an Extraordinary Destination

Choose from three amazing vessels to experience these amazing islands. The luxurious 100-guest mega yacht Celebrity Flora®, acclaimed as best small ship, rivals any boutique resort—and with better scenery. The popular 48-guest Celebrity Xpedition® is the ship that put us on the map in the Galapagos. The intimate 16-guest Celebrity Xploration® is the most personal way to explore here.

Royal Galapagos Fleet of Small Cruise Ships

The Galapagos has eighteen main islands in its archipelago and Royal Galapagos offers a range of itineraries to the most fascinating among them. Shorter trips will usually take in the central islands around Santa Cruz and Espanola to visit the sea lion colonies and marine iguanas. Others make the trip North to Genovesa to enjoy some of the best bird watching in the archipelago.

Longer itineraries will offer the opportunity to explore Fernandina and Isabela the larger islands in Galapagos. These islands are older than the others and so home to beautiful forests and wildlife. The chance to admire or even snorkel with penguins is also best on Fernandina and Isabela. Other options include visits to Genovesa for bird watching and the red volcanic beaches of Rabida.

Natural Paradise

The Natural Paradise is the perfect ship to enjoy both the adventure of visiting the Galapagos and a hotel-style cruise. The shorter itineraries of four or five days visit the main islands including Santa Cruz and Bartholeme, Bartholeme is a great spot for snorkelling with small sharks, turtles and penguins. Longer trips offer the option of Isabela and Fernandina with their spectacular forests and wildlife or a visit to Genovesa and more time to spend in Santa Cruz. Up on deck, there is a sundeck area with a jacuzzi to relax after a day’s nature walking, snorkelling or bird watching.

Infinity Luxury

Added in 2018 to the Royal Galapagos fleet the Infinity Luxury is perfect for couples and families. The ship has an upper solarium and on deck bar as well as a large and comfortable lounge. There is a four-day northern itinerary to Genovesa for keen bird watchers and naturalists and a five-day southern trip to the sea lion colonies at Espanola. For those with more time, there is the option of an eight-day trip to Fernandina and Isabela to hike in the forests and snorkel with sea lions and penguins. Alternatively, take in the northern and southern islands visiting Genovesa and Espanola.

The Calipso offers both Small Ship Cruise itineraries and diving itineraries .

The Cormorant takes guests on various trips around the Galapagos Islands. She offers offer tours that range from 4, 5 or 8 days. The all-inclusive package includes transportation by boat as well hotel stays in San Cristobal while visiting some must-see locations like Pinnacle Rock, guests can go kayaking near Gardner Bay, which sea lions call home.

Icon of the seas: the best dining, amenities and more on royal caribbean's new ship.

This family-friendly megaship features plenty of activities, entertainment and restaurants.

Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Key Takeaways

  • Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, with 18 passenger-accessible decks, eight different neighborhoods and 2,805 staterooms.
  • Think of Icon of the Seas as an all-in-one adventure vacation contained on a ship. Young families and energetic travelers will enjoy it most.
  • Itineraries originate from Miami , sail to destinations around the Caribbean and include a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island , Perfect Day at CocoCay.

If you have any degree of interest in traveling or cruising, chances are you've heard the buzz around Icon of the Seas. Another record-breaking ship by Royal Caribbean International , Icon of the Seas debuted on Jan. 27, 2024, as the largest cruise ship in the world. It is epic in every sense, featuring 18 cruiser-accessible decks and stretching 1,196 feet from bow to stern.

With greatest-of-all-time soccer player Lionel Messi as the ship's godfather, the Icon of the Seas is truly iconic. Messi brought the entire Inter Miami team along for the opening ceremony and the big reveal of the team's new Royal Caribbean-sponsored jerseys. I was fortunate enough to attend this star-studded ceremony as part of the press preview sailing in the days leading up to the ship's grand debut to the public. It was everything I thought it would be and more, and nobody could have been more appropriate than Messi to send this ship on her maiden voyage.

Boarding a ship of this size can seem overwhelming, but not when you understand the layout. Icon of the Seas is broken up into eight distinct neighborhoods: AquaDome, Central Park, Thrill Island, Chill Island, Royal Promenade, The Hideaway, Suite Neighborhood and Surfside, a neighborhood built for young families looking for nonstop fun and kid-approved eats and treats.

In addition to these public areas, there are 2,805 staterooms spread across 12 decks. Icon of the Seas' capacity maxes out at 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, but with the plethora of public spaces and variety of things to do and see, you can choose your own adventure without encountering more crowds than you want to.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Icon of the Seas itinerary

During its inaugural 2024-2025 cruising season, Icon of the Seas offers seven-night eastern or western Caribbean adventures from Miami, stopping at a variety of tropical destinations. All sailings include a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas . Other destinations include Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis ; Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico .

During the 2025-2026 cruising season, new destinations will include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Labadee, Haiti; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (part of the U.S. Virgin Islands ). All sailings will originate from Miami.

No matter your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you'll visit beautiful places – but you can expect to feel torn about spending any time off the ship, because it's just that jampacked with things to do.

Who should sail on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas appeals not so much to a demographic as to a psychographic; you're going to need to be someone who likes to live life in all caps. Royal Caribbean set out to create "the world's best vacation" contained on a ship, so Icon of the Seas is for anyone who would enjoy the combination of a beach trip, a resort stay, a water park adventure and island-hopping.

Fun-loving travelers and families with kids of varying ages will do best on this ship; it feels a little bit like Disney World with over-the-top everything and a truly massive sprawl. Older travelers who prefer a more quiet, refined experience may want to opt for a less kid-friendly ship. Still, even couples without children will find plenty of fun adult-friendly things to do and romantic places to tuck in.

The Royal Promenade can be quite loud and buzzy, but simply relocating to another onboard neighborhood can completely shift the vibe. Also, keep in mind that the ship really is huge, and walking from end to end can be a hike, so those with limited mobility or endurance might want to look into a smaller ship.

Icon of the Seas prices are high in its opening season, but cruisers with big dreams and small budgets can expect rates to drop by the time the next ship in the series debuts.

The stateroom

With a ship this overstimulating, it's imperative that your stateroom is a haven. Luckily, Icon of the Seas offers peaceful rooms, many of which feature ocean or Central Park neighborhood views. Cruise ship accommodations are stereotypically compact – even cramped – but the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in Icon of the Seas' cabins (with the exception of the windowless interior rooms) lend an airy, open feel. The cabin layouts are also optimized to provide the maximum amount of storage, floor space and comfort.

Stateroom decor is mildly nautical- and tropical-themed, with calming hues that mimic the scenery outside your window (think blues, beiges and whites). High-tech elements include smart TVs, LED mirrors and the ability to control many aspects of your room from an app.

My husband and I stayed in an Ocean View Large Balcony Stateroom, a 204-square-foot refuge from the hustle and bustle of the ship (the balcony adds another 65 to 70 square feet). This room type can sleep up to four people with a sofa bed for one or two; the room also features twin beds that convert to a king bed for couples.

My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and we were comfortable in our room, even though our quarters included a large bed, a bathroom, a sofa and a desk. We loved sitting on our private balcony and watching the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean flow by.

If money is no object, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – an over-the-top eight-guest, three-story pad with a private whirlpool on the balcony, three bathrooms, a slide that connects the second and main levels, an in-suite cinema, a dining room and a kitchenette – looks epic. But keep in mind, it costs nearly $100,000 for the week.

The Sunset Corner Suites (about one-fifth of the cost of the Ultimate Family Townhouse, but still expensive) are also pretty sweet, with a wraparound balcony and a bed facing the sea.

Luckily, not all rooms break the bank; with four main stateroom categories (suite, balcony, ocean view and inside) and 28 subcategories, there's something for everyone.

Best amenities on Icon of the Seas

It's almost impossible to run out of things to do aboard Icon of the Seas.

For thrill-seekers, the largest water park at sea – Category 6 – features the Frightening Bolt (the tallest waterslide on a ship) and the Pressure Drop (the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise vessel).

If you've tired of the seven swimming pools, six waterslides, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, escape room, sports courts, outdoor decks, theater, spa and all-day programming, simply take a stroll down the Royal Promenade for Las Vegas -style people-watching. The Royal Promenade has 15 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as a Starbucks that seems to have a line no matter what time you go. The neighborhood feels a bit like a shopping mall … if a shopping mall had floor-to-ceiling ocean views made possible by the world's largest kinetic art sculpture.

The Pearl, a feat of engineering, is one of the most unique aspects of the ship's design. This art piece is actually a load-bearing structure supporting three decks, but it looks and feels like an interactive art experience designed solely for the enjoyment of guests. The multisensory immersive structure has 3,000 kinetic panels and moody ever-changing lighting. It is one of the first things guests will see when they walk on board, as it stretches from the Royal Promenade up to Central Park.

My husband and I spent most of our time at the FlowRider surf simulator – his favorite amenity – but we made sure to leave time for Taylor Swift trivia at Spotlight Karaoke and the superhuman stunts of the Aqua Theater show, a must on any Icon of the Seas voyage. The ship even has a massive ice arena called Absolute Zero for ice skating (the 20-minute sessions are complimentary) and impressive shows.

We also loved lounging in The Overlook Bar & Pods, an area at the very front of the ship (behind the AquaDome) that features two levels of floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. It felt airy and open, which can't be said about many cruise ship interiors.

Best dining venues on Icon of the Seas

There are more dining options aboard Icon of the Seas than you can fit in on a seven-night cruise – but you can give it the old college try. Thirteen of the dining venues are complimentary, while 14 are specialty restaurants (which cost extra; fees vary). There are also 18 bars and lounges.

The best meal we experienced on the ship was at the Chops Grille specialty eatery. When we spotted Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and a group of bigwigs at a table next to us, we knew we were in the right place. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the breezes of Central Park while we chowed down, but you can eat indoors for an elegant steakhouse experience and a view of the open kitchen and butcher's display, which shows off specialty cuts like high-grade wagyu and bone-in tomahawks.

While I'd never turn down a swanky steak dinner, grabbing quick poolside bites at El Loco Fresh and indulging in some food hall-style grazing at AquaDome Market were equally enjoyable. We also had no complaints eating several meals at Windjammer, the classic complimentary cruise ship buffet.

Even though we don't have children, we stopped into Surfside Bites for a very kid-friendly meal, complete with soft serve ice cream cones from Sprinkles (because no cruise is complete without soft serve). We didn't try anything from the open-air, lemonade stand-inspired Lemon Post bar, but its menu of cocktails and mocktails looked delicious.

And since you're on vacation, be sure to check out the milkshake bar Desserted, where the sugary creations are as photo-worthy as they are decadent. They're worth the upcharge.

Best excursions on Icon of the Seas

Depending on what's on your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you may be able to book activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tropical jungle adventures, visits to Mayan ruins, volcano hikes, rainforest zip lining, relaxing beach days or cultural immersion tours.

Note that Royal Caribbean features the same options on many of its other Caribbean cruises; none of the excursions on offer are exclusive to Icon of the Seas.

Because our press preview sailing only visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, we did not experience any of the shore excursions. Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas was plenty of fun, even though we didn't plan anything in advance.

If we had made plans, we would have liked to check out the Up, Up and Away tethered hot air balloon, which wasn't running that day, and the overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club, which were all booked. Thrill Waterpark (which features the tallest waterslide in North America), Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean) and the adults-only Hideaway Beach are other highlights of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Overall impressions of Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean seems to be focused on superlatives. It has the biggest, best, tallest, largest and most of everything – especially when it comes to Icon of the Seas. If you like jampacked, adventurous vacations that squeeze a lot of adventure and relaxation into one memorable week, Icon of the Seas is probably for you.

While I love seeing Royal Caribbean push the limits of what cruises can be, the ship may almost be too big for some. It's an all-out Vegas-esque vessel that feels more like a floating city; you will probably forget (more than once) that you're not on dry land.

That's not necessarily a bad thing – if Icon of the Seas looks fun to you, it probably will be – but my husband and I tend to gravitate more toward authentic, immersive, on-the-ground cultural experiences when we travel. While Icon of the Seas is a lot of things, it's not that. We had a fantastic time and have already started planning a future Royal Caribbean cruise with a group of friends and family, but we also sympathize with the anticruisers of the world. Vacationing does not a traveler make.

Still, the shows are entertaining, the service is attentive, the music is jamming, and the architecture and design are incredibly impressive. I have no real complaints and suspect that most cruisers will have the time of their lives on Icon of the Seas – exactly as the minds at Royal Caribbean envisioned when they dreamed up this iconic ship.
