Rufus Wainwright: Unfollow the Rules review – a return to sumptuous basics
(BMG) Wainwright’s 10th studio album is a lush, engaging study in domestic bliss
A fter almost a decade working in other fields – most notably on his second opera and a project putting Shakespeare’s sonnets to music – Rufus Wainwright has recorded his first straightforwardly pop album since 2012’s Out of the Game . Whereas that record, produced by Mark Ronson, was immersed in 70s soft-rock sounds, Unfollow the Rules marks a welcome return to the opulent orchestration of Wainwright’s early albums.
There’s a genuine sense of contentedness here. Peaceful Afternoon, written for his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, is an irresistible, guitar-driven paean to domestic bliss (“Between sex and death and tryin’ to keep the kitchen clean”), while the tender My Little You is addressed to Wainwright’s now nine-year-old daughter, Viva. There’s humour, too: Bexhill-on-Sea does not feature much in music folklore, but an encounter there with some over-enthusiastic female fans was the source material for This One’s for the Ladies (That Lunge!), a sumptuous ballad. Elsewhere, he takes lyrical inspiration from Anna Wintour, Joni Mitchell and forgotten statues in west London.
Best of all, though, is the six-minute title track, which starts with just Wainwright and his piano, then swells into a breathtaking emotional climax that’s as affecting as anything he’s ever done. It’s good to have him back.

Rufus Wainwright: Unfollow the Rules
Sponsored by Maureen & Joseph Wekselblatt | Frank Ullman | September 30, 2022
For the first time in 7 years, Rufus Wainwright released a brand new studio album during the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 titled “Unfollow the Rules.”
Produced by Mitchell Froom, this album is the bookend to his debut album that garnered him Best New Artist by American Rolling Stone Magazine in 1998 and can be seen as a summary and climax of all his previous albums, a work of true maturity. It was nominated for a Grammy and Juno and has been met with great critical acclaim.
“ Just extraordinary, just breathtaking.. ” – NPR All Songs Considered
“ An opulently crafted highlight reel, a career-spanning sampler of the singer’s many styles and guises. ” – Pitchfork
“ Nobody sings quite like Rufus Wainwright. ” – The New Yorker
“ Lush, theatrical. ” – All Music 4 star review
“ Sleek….It has an urgency, wisdom, and a measured calmness that expressly speaks to today. ” – Spin
“ What I would like this album to symbolize is a coming together of all the aspects of my life which have made me a seasoned artist,” says Wainwright. “My aim is to emulate the greats of yore whose second acts produced their finest work – Leonard Cohen when he made THE FUTURE, when Sinatra became Sinatra in his 40s, when Paul Simon put out GRACELAND. Pop music isn’t always about your waistline. Many songwriters improve with age. I’m flying the flag for staying alive! “
Rufus has been embarking on a worldwide tour with a spectacular three-piece band since September 2021. Fans old and new in the US and the UK so far have experienced the singer-songwriter in the absolute prime of his vocal abilities. The London Times wrote after his sold out Palladium show “ When he unleashes that velvety truffle of a voice, …you want it to go on and on. ” and The Arts Desk says that “ Wainwright certainly knows how to pace a concert, and the performance he gives borders on the operatic, pushing his voice to highs and lows that seem sometimes to defy the odds. ” Audiences can expect a glorious mixture of deep emotion, drama, wit, solace, uplift, entertainment and absolute musical bliss, a journey that not many artists can take you along on.
Featuring Carsie Blanton to kick off the show!
Carsie Blanton writes anthems for a world worth saving. Inspired by artists including Nina Simone and Randy Newman, her songs encompass a wide range of genres, from sultry pop to punk-tinged Americana. Whether alone with her electric guitar or fronting her four-piece “handsome band,” Carsie delivers every song with an equal dose of moxie and mischief, bringing her audience together in joyful celebration of everything worth fighting for.

Unfollow The Rules
Rufus Wainwright and José González : Unfollow The Rules In The Local Valley Tour
- Save to Calendar
Critically acclaimed powerhouse singer-songwriters Rufus Wainwright and José González each perform their unique blend of warmhearted melodies, inspiring lyrics, and exceptional musicianship.
Unfollow The Rules finds Rufus Wainwright at the peak of his powers, entering artistic maturity with passion, honesty, and a new-found fearlessness while remaining as mischievous as ever. Recorded in the same legendary Los Angeles studios as his landmark debut, his ninth album is both a bookend to Act 1 of an extraordinary career and a distillation of 21 years of experience at pop’s most flamboyant coal face.
Inspired by middle age, married life, fatherhood, friends, loss, London, and Laurel Canyon, Unfollow The Rules captures Rufus at a crossroads. Ready to tackle new challenges, yet compelled to confront his past, he’s taking stock of two decades of running riot with rules, making sense of how he has matured as a musician and celebrating the contented family man he has become.
Following José González’s acclaimed Vestiges & Claws , Local Valley provides a welcome reminder of the Gothenburg, Sweden-based artist’s understated appeal and singular ability to communicate discreetly. Sung in English, Spanish, and Swedish, these 13 thought-provoking, meticulously crafted songs sound as characteristically confident and rich in compelling detail as anything in his prior canon.

Rufus Wainwright
Praised by The New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists, songwriters, and composers of his generation. The New York-born, Montreal-raised singer-songwriter has released seven studio albums to date, three DVDs, and three live albums including the Grammy-nominated Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall. He has collaborated with artists including Elton John, Burt Bacharach, Robert Wilson, David Byrne, Boy George, Joni Mitchell, Pet Shop Boys, Heart, Robbie Williams, Jessye Norman, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Sting, and producer Mark Ronson, among many others. His recent release, Unfollow the Rules, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and for a Juno for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
José González
Hailed by Rolling Stone as “someone whose subtle, carefully crafted music delivers rewards to listeners who know how to wait,” José González ’s stellar career can only be described as a dream. His classic interpretation of The Knife’s Heartbeats provided the son of Argentinean parents with a jumpstart that has since tallied more than 1B streams, over 150 licensed TV, film, and videogame uses, and a major presence on radio stations around the globe. He has won a range of honors, performed on high-profile network television shows, headlined prestigious festivals, sold out concert venues on virtually all continents, and collaborated with Ben Stiller on an inventive film soundtrack. González’s warm, intimate voice and tender harmonies, underlined by a dexterously plucked Spanish guitar and muted percussion, deliver profoundly thoughtful lyrics largely revolving around ideas of civilization, humanism, and solidarity. A sincere, artful performer whose singular approach to songwriting and sonics sets him worlds apart, José González is in a class by himself.
