Norway holidays
Introduction, at a glance, when to visit, areas of norway.
Norway is one of the most beautiful countries in the world famed for its incredibly steep-sided fjords, mountainous terrain, grand glaciers and rugged wilderness, not to mention the Arctic.
Such landforms provide a backdrop for some of Europe's most charismatic wildlife as well as activities such as fishing, cruising and skiing. Norway has it all, including cosmopolitan cities and the spectacular Northern Lights.
Book your holiday to Norway today and enjoy guaranteed savings , upgrades and many more extras to make your next holiday truly special.

Oslo: 30 kilometres

The official language is Norwegian. English is widely spoken in all major cities.
It can’t be exaggerated: the scenery in Norway is among the most breathtaking in the world, with wild terrain that can be experienced within a whopping 44 national parks.
- The Northern Lights are at their most frequent in late autumn and winter, into early spring and can be seen from many places in Norway.
- Norway is well known for its fjords - deep inlets of the sea between high cliffs – with Sognefjord the absolute highlight, as the largest in Norway and one of the longest in the world.
- The country is also a great alternative ski destination to somewhere like the Alps, thanks to its less crowded slopes - three of the main centres for downhill skiing are Voss, Lillehammer and Geilo.
Summer (June-August) brings incredibly long days - the time of the “midnight sun” - with September generally also a pleasant time to go. In the north, the cold bites from late September until May, but while there may be freezing temperatures and reduced daylight, travelling at this time of year brings a higher chance of seeing the northern lights (aurora borealis) and the chance to ski. Spring in the fjords is the perfect time to visit.
The Norwegian capital has gone through a renaissance in the last decade that’s turned it into a tourism hotspot and a showcase for chic Scandinavian design. The iconic Oslo Opera House is the heart of the waterfront Bjorvika neighbourhood; once a container port, now a thriving district with museums, shops and restaurants. Hospitality abounds around Aker Brygge – once the home of Oslo’s shipyards and factories – and the young, hip Tjuvholmen area is packed with boutique hotels, contemporary dining and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art. Easy access to skiing, tobogganing and skating in the winter months means you don’t have to venture too far from Oslo to experience the magical Norwegian winter.
Some of the country’s best skiing is found in the centre of the country. Lillehammer, home of the 1994 Winter Olympics, is a magnet for skiers from November to April, but hiking and cycling trails keep visitors coming all year-round.
Voss is known as Norway’s adventure capital, home to adrenaline pursuits like skydiving and bungee jumping, as well as plenty of ski and snowboarding routes.
Tucked in between two national parks, Geilo was Norway’s first ski resort, and still lures plenty of visitors with its long ski season and idyllic setting. Norway’s third largest city, Trondheim, is a picturesque cityscape of waterfront warehouses turned into modern apartments, known for its buzzing music and restaurant scene and young student population.
Western Norway is a land of mesmerising fjords and towering peaks strung out to the north and south of Bergen, the country’s second city. The picturesque Sognefjord is Norway's longest and deepest, reaching more than 200 kilometres inland.
One of its many arms, the Næroyfjord, is a UNESCO World Heritage site flanked by 1800-metre mountains on either side, affording an up-close perspective of the rugged limestone landscape.
The town of Stavanger is an adventure hub, providing access to hiking trails around the much-photographed Pulpit rock, which towers 604 metres above the deep blue Lysefjord.
Head north from Trondheim and you venture into Norway’s epic Arctic region; a land of ancient folklore and rugged wilderness, with lofty mountains, spectacular scenery and magical lights in the sky. Situated far above the Arctic Circle, the historic city of Tromso is the launch point for expeditions into the wild landscape and one of the best places in Europe to witness the northern lights.
Offshore, the Loften Islands are an adventure-seeker’s paradise, with kayaking and fishing trips out in the frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean, and whale watching tours affording the opportunity to view some of the world’s biggest wildlife in their natural habitat.
Hundreds of miles of ocean separate mainland Norway from Svalbard, deep in the Arctic Circle, where polar bears, arctic foxes and reindeer wander among the glaciers and frozen tundra.
Norwegians love fish and seafood, which is often smoked, pickled or salted to preserve it during the winter months, when food was traditionally harder to come by. Although smoked salmon is the country’s most famous export, adventurous diners may want to try more traditional dishes like rakfisk; salted and fermented trout. Cured meats, sausages, stews and meatballs are all popular dishes often served with potatoes, veg and gravy – hearty fare to see you through the long winter. Game such as reindeer and moose often appear on the menu.
Norway is steeped in folklore; a fabled land of trolls, Norse gods and other mythological creatures whose influence is apparent in place names like Trollstigen (Troll’s Path). These days, the country is more famous for its ground-breaking architecture and uber-cool interior design than its monsters. Buildings like Oslo’s Opera House have put Norway at the forefront of contemporary architecture, and local firms like Snohetta have become global brands. Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum provides some insight into the fearsome predecessors of modern day Norwegians.
From the polar bears of Svalbard to the moose and elk that roam the wilderness in the south, all manner of oversized wildlife can be found in Norway. The country has 44 national parks and more than 2,000 designated nature reserves, where rarely seen mammals like lynx and browns bears lurk. In the far northern province of Svalbard, polar bears and elusive Arctic foxes roam the ice, while puffins soar overhead. In the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Norwegian Sea, seals and dolphins compete for food, and in the warmer months from May to September, humpback, sperm and right whales can be seen frolicking offshore.
Hunters and fishermen settled in Norway around 10,000 years ago, and by 800AD, the Vikings had built iron weapons and fast ocean-going ships, which they used to plunder foreign lands. The Norwegian Empire was decimated by the Black Death in 1350, and allegiances with other Scandinavian countries were forged and broken over the next 500 years. Norway discovered oil and gas in the 1960s, generating billions for the local economy, and today the country is consistently voted among the best places in the world to live.

June to August is the high tourist season, as it offers long daylight hours and pleasantly warm temperatures. You can go for swimming, hiking, cycling and other kinds of fresh-air fun activities with the people you love. To experience pleasant weather and long hours of daylight, you can visit Sweden in the shoulder Season, from mid-April to May or from September to mid-October. Spring and autumn seasons are ideal for travel, but you won't see the Northern Lights or the sun at midnight. The greatest time to accomplish that is during the summer.

Although Iceland isn’t a Scandinavian country, it is often thought of as one. This is because it shares history and cultural norms with the Scandinavian nations of Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

5. WHAT SHOULD I DO IN SCANDINAVIA?
Although each of the Scandinavian countries – Norway, Sweden and Denmark – share similarities, each has something different to offer you. So if you can, we recommend visiting all three on your trip or returning to explore each in more depth.
Below you’ll find a brief round-up of the top travel experiences you can have in each Scandinavian country.
These are some of the best things to see and do in Norway :
- • Explore Norway’s stunning UNESCO-listed fjords, including Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord
- • Go on the iconic Norway in a Nutshell® tour and admire mountain peaks and tumbling waterfalls
- • Uncover the country’s rich heritage when you visit historic Viking towns like Trondheim and Bergen
- • Journey to the Arctic Circle and look out for polar bears in Svalbard, or learn about Sámi culture in Tromsø
- • Enjoy the road trip of a lifetime and immerse yourself in the striking beauty of the Lofoten Islands
Here are a few top recommendations for what to do on your trip to Sweden:
- • Wander the cosmopolitan streets of Stockholm , Sweden’s enticing capital city
- • Take a boat tour in the tranquil Stockholm archipelago, just a stone’s throw from the capital
- • Opt for a road trip around the Swedish countryside and visit Dalarna, home of the Dala horse workshop
- • Head to Swedish Lapland in winter for a memorable stay in the world’s original ICEHOTEL
- • Visit a Sámi reindeer farm near Kiruna or hunt the northern lights in Abisko National Park
Although Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian nations, you won’t want to miss exploring the capital city, Copenhagen. Get inspired and learn what Denmark is known for . These are some of our favourite things to do here:
- • Tour the city’s historic sites, including the 17th-century Rosenborg Castle
- • Spend time roaming independent boutiques and charming eateries just off the capital’s cobbled streets
- • Stroll through Nyhavn, making sure to stop at a café and admire this colourful district
You’ll find Scandinavia tour ideas for first-time visitors and inspiration for road trips in Scandinavia in these blogs.

Read more about the best places to visit and when to travel in this ultimate guide to Scandinavia .
7. HOW CAN I GET AROUND SCANDINAVIA?
There are a few convenient ways to get around Scandinavia. These include joining a guided tour or travelling independently by train, boat or car.
Choose a Scandinavia guided small group tour and you’ll be able to relax while an expert tour guide shares their knowledge with you. Your local guide will also drive your group (of up to 16 guests) between each stop. This gives you the freedom to take in the view and get to know your fellow travellers.
In fact, one of the best ways to get around is by combining travel by rail and sea on an independent train and cruise tour in Scandinavia . And because the scenery is so stunning, the journeys between stops will become a highlight of your trip.
Or you could discover Norway, Sweden and Denmark on a self-drive Scandinavia package . Choosing a road trip gives you the flexibility to go at your own pace, meaning you can stop wherever you like along the way.
It’s good to know that while the roads are in generally good condition, road trips are best enjoyed during the summer months. This is because snow and icy conditions can make driving trickier in winter. So, it’s for this reason that Nordic Visitor offers road trips in Scandinavia from May to September.
Get inspired for your next adventure with these 2-week road trip itineraries in Scandinavia .
8. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO TO SCANDINAVIA?
While Scandinavia is beautiful year-round, the best time to visit depends on what you’d like to see and do on your trip.
For instance, choose a Scandinavia summer tour to make the most of mild temperatures and the year’s longest daylight hours. These conditions are perfect if you want to spend plenty of time outdoors.
On the other hand, a winter trip to Scandinavia brings a different set of adventures.
Imagine seeing Scandinavian cities and towns draped in twinkling lights for the festive season and experiencing the Danish concept of hygge for yourself. You could also enjoy thrilling activities in the snow or go on a northern lights tour in Lapland .
To find out more about what each season has to offer in Scandinavia, you can check out these handy guides:
- • When is the best time to go and visit Norway?
- • Sweden in summer: what to do and where to go
- • Scandinavia in winter: what to do and where to go
9. WHERE CAN I SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN SCANDINAVIA?
Northern Norway and Lapland are two of the best places to see the aurora borealis in Europe. Within Scandinavia, the rule of thumb is that the further north you go, the more likely you are to glimpse nature’s most spectacular light show.
And although witnessing this natural phenomenon can’t be guaranteed, travelling in winter will give you the best chance of success. This is because winter’s long, dark nights present more opportunities for spotting the northern lights.
So if you want to tick seeing the aurora off your wish list, then we recommend a northern lights trip to Norway between October and April. Alternatively, you could enjoy an aurora tour package in Lapland from December to March.
These are some of the best places to see the aurora borealis in Scandinavia:
- • Svalbard, Norway
- • Kirkenes, Norway
- • Nordkapp, or "North Cape", Norway
- • Tromsø, Norway
- • Kiruna, Sweden
- • Aurora Sky Station, Sweden
The Nordic countries of Iceland and Finland are also top locations for a northern lights tour in Europe . Check out this guide to the best times and places to see the aurora in Northern Europe to find out more.
10. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?
Yes, you’ll be able to choose from a range of seasonal packages with a variety of start dates. So you can simply pick the day that suits you best, depending on the time of year that you’d like to visit Scandinavia.
When you’re booking your trip online, you’ll be able to select your preferred start date from the tour’s availability calendar.
For example, Scandinavia guided small group tours have a number of guaranteed departures available to choose from. Meanwhile, you can choose any start date that works for you from the availability calendar on a self-drive, or independent train and cruise trip.
11. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY TOUR?
Absolutely, you can personalise your tour when booking online. For instance, why not customise your package by adding extra nights or optional activities to your itinerary?
This is ideal if you’d like more time to discover the sights in one of Scandinavia's trendy capital cities. You’ll also be able to choose from excursions like a boat trip in Stockholm’s archipelago or a food tour of Copenhagen.
If you’re looking for something more bespoke, you can contact a travel consultant to discuss your dream trip to Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Our travel experts are happy to plan your bucket list adventure. They will share their insider expertise, whether you’re looking for the best Scandinavia family tours or an extra special honeymoon package .
It’s also possible to tailor Scandinavia small group tours by adding extra nights at the start or end of the guided portion of your trip.
12. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?
We advise holding off on buying flights until your tour is booked, but it’s a good idea to check what times and dates are available beforehand. Once your travel consultant lets you know that your trip is confirmed, you can go ahead and purchase your flights.
Waiting until we have confirmed your accommodation and tour arrangements means that you can select the flights that work best for your final itinerary. Plus, if you have any questions you can ask your dedicated consultant for advice.
13. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR IN SCANDINAVIA?
The weather in Norway , Sweden and Denmark can vary a lot depending on the time of year you visit. For instance, in summer you’ll experience mild temperatures, but in winter it can be cold and even snowy.
That said, no matter when you’re travelling, it’s best to be prepared for a variety of conditions. These all-season recommendations are a good place to begin when deciding what to bring with you:
- Walking boots or shoes with good grip
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Woollen or fleece jumpers
