Adelaide cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-04-21 08:45

Port Adelaide cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Adelaide, South Australia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. It is located on Torrens River, between Mt Lofty Ranges (to the east) and Gulf St Vincent (to the west). By metro population (over 1,3 million), the city is ranked Australia's 5th largest - after Sydney (New South Wales) , Melbourne (Victoria) , Brisbane (Queensland) and Perth (Western Australia) .

Adelaide is named after Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (1792-1849), consort of William lV (1765-1837, King of Hanover). City's layout was planned in 1836 as a square-mile grid of wide boulevards surrounded by gardens and nature parks. Once known as "City of Churches", Adelaide has become celebrated for its arts festival, alfresco lifestyle, manageable size and pace, enhanced by a climate in which hot summers and warm autumns are separated by mild winters and springs.

There is a free city-loop bus service running along North Terrace and going to the south through Victoria Square. Shopping can be found close to North Terrace, at Rundle Mall off King William Str. Have in mind that shops and most attractions close at 5 pm. Beyond North Terrace is Torrens River with boat tours and tree-lined promenades, ovelooked by Festival Centre, Convention Centre and Adelaide Oval across the river.

Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide is located on Port River (officially Port Adelaide River) which is part of an estuary north of downtown. Since 1837, Port River is used as a shipping channel that serves cargo and passenger ships. Harbour Terminal (serving passenger / ferry and cruise ships) is at Outer Harbour (on Gulf St Vincent).

Port Adelaide is approx 14 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown and is also a city suburb (Outer Harbor, industrial suburb). Port's first wharf (Maclaren Wharf) was built in 1840. It had length 102 m (336 ft) and low tide draft/water depth 4,6 m (15 ft). Initially, the port had capacity to handle vessels with max displacement 539 tons. By mid-19th-century, the increasing shipping trade resulted in building new wharves and expanding the harbour facilities.

Outer Harbor's construction started in early-20th-century in order to accommodate larger vessels and reduce the time for navigation up Port River to Inner Harbour. In 2002, Newport Quays (consortium) was contracted by state's Government for the AUD 1,5 billion port development project covering 51 hectares (130 acres) of land. Land sales began in 2005. This project included the building of 2000 residential homes, with construction works creating ~4000 local jobs. In 2008, the now budgeted AUD 2 billion project was nearing completion (2 of 3 phases completed). Phase 3 included building a boat/yacht marina (capacity 100 slots/berths) and a building over the water.

In 2016 was proposed a project for Inner Harbor's Dock One transformation into a premium 23-hectares (0,23 km2) waterfront complex with residential and commercial buildings. The project included 1250 homes to be built across 4 precincts - 750 by Starfish Developments (at precincts Dock One, and Port Approach) and 500 by Cedar Woods (in precincts North West and Fletcher's Slip). The project included also constructing an esplanade (waterfront promenade) around Inner Harbor, a dockside piazza and refurbishment of Marine and Harbors (old building) into apartments. The 7-year project (estimated to generate ~AUD 280 million in investments) was officially launched on February 10, 2019. Inner Harbor is approx 13 km / 8 mi from downtown's CBD (central business district).

Port's cruising season runs from late-October through early-April. Trends show that the Australian cruising market is growing at a rapid pace. It has some of the industry's highest penetration rates nationally. Currently, Australian cruise ports' strongest competition comes from Singapore and Hong Kong (China) .

(statistics) Between season 2004-2005 and season 2009-2010, there were an over 450% increase in cruise ship visits and over 685% increase in cruise passengers. During season 2011-2012, MS Athena (renamed CMV Astoria , back then owned by Classic International Cruises / 1985-2012 defunct) was the first-ever cruise ship with long-term homeporting in Adelaide (regularly-scheduled roundtrips).

(statistics) season 2015-2016 (Nov 2015 - May 2016) had scheduled 38 cruise ship calls. Of those, 23 to Adelaide, 10 to Kangaroo Island , 4 to Port Lincoln and 1 to Robe (Limestone Coast).

On February 4-5, 2012 (over the weekend) at the port docked 4 cruise liners with total ~10000 passengers and crew. At that time, the largest cruiser that ever visited Australia ( Cunard 's RMS Queen Mary 2 ) berthed in the morning (Feb 4) carrying 2620 pax plus 1200 crew. On the next day (Feb 5), at "Outer Harbour 2" docked Celebrity Century (2150 pax, now Marella Explorer 2 ), Crystal Serenity (1100 pax) and MS Athena (550 pax, now Astoria ). Due to all ship calls, business hours in Rundle Mall were extended and live band music entertainment was provided. Weekend's 4 ship visits injected AUD 1,35+ million into the state's economy, with AUD 360,000+ to the city and its surrounding regions. Rundle Mall was visited by 60,000+ people (35,000-45,000 on regular weekend days).

During season 2015-2016, inaugural calls at Port Adelaide were made by Explorer of the Seas ( RCI-Royal Caribbean ), Pacific Eden ( P&O Australia ), Superstar Virgo ( Genting Star Cruises ) and Queen Elizabeth (Cunard).

Princess Cruises ' 2015-2016 program for the first time ever included a roundtrip departure from Adelaide. The 9-night itinerary visited Melbourne, Burnie (Tasmania) , Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln and Portland (Victoria) , with prices starting from AUD 1200 pp (quad cabin rates). The company's 2015-2016 program had scheduled 80+ departures out of Australian ports (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide) and also from Auckland NZ .

On December 11, 2016, the port was visited by its ever-largest cruise ship - RCI's Ovation of the Seas . The vessel docked at Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal (at 7 am) bringing nearly 6000 passengers and crew. At 4 pm, it departed for Hobart Tasmania . Australia's cruise industry worth for 2016 was estimated at ~USD 5,95 billion.

Princess Cruises' 2018 program (based on Golden Princess ) offered roundtrips to New Zealand. The first departure was January 8, 2018 (ports of call Melbourne, Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Gisborne, Tauranga, Auckland, Fiordland Park). During season 2017-2018 (October-March), the cruise port handled 65 ship calls (16 more than 2016-2017) and a total of 159,513 passengers. For season 2019-2020, the port had scheduled 86 ship calls (nearly 1/4 increase).

On February 12, 2018, P&O Australia started the company's longest homeporting season in Adelaide. The 8-night cruise (themed "A Taste Of Tasmania") was operated by Pacific Eden .

The voyage had twice the number of nights of the traditional 3-day Cruises to Nowhere and featured scenic passage through Wineglass Bay (Freycinet National Park) and Great Oyster Bay (Tasman Sea). The available for booking shore excursions were 56, including sampling oysters at Coffin Bay and exploring South Australia's first lighthouse at Cape Willoughby Conservation Park.

During season 2018, P&O had scheduled 5 turnarounds/roundtrips from Adelaide with ~7000 passengers, injecting USD 5 million into the local economy. The 1500-passenger Pacific Eden (now Vasco da Gama ) started its first voyage from Adelaide (3-night "Comedy" cruise to nowhere) on February 9. The last roundtrip was on Feb 24 ( Food and Wine-themed ).

In March 2019, the Dutch company Royal Boskalis Westminster NV won the contract for widening Outer Harbor's shipping channel. The EUR 40 million project was awarded by Flinders Ports (port owner/operator) and includes Boskalis to widen the channel from 130 to 170 m (427-558 ft) and also to extend port's swinging/turning basin to allow access to larger container ships (Post Panamax-sized boxships) and larger cruise liners . Works include removing over 1,5 million m3 of material (sand and clay) via one trailing suction hopper dredger (ship) and one backhoe dredger (barge-mounted excavator). The dredged material will be moved to a designated area approx 30 km (19 mi) offshore. The project's completion was scheduled for 2019-H2.

For 2020-2021 (October through May), Princess scheduled the company's ever-largest South Australian homeporting season, with five Adelaide-visiting liners and estimated ~USD 20 million revenue to state's economy - from port charges, ship supplies, passenger-crew spending ashore. Of the 5 Australia-based Princess ships, 2 were homeported in Adelaide ( Sea and Sapphire ).

Cruise itineraries to and from Adelaide Australia

Follows a list of destinations visited by cruise ships leaving out of Adelaide port:

  • World Cruises – from Adelaide are offered around the world voyages by bigger luxury lines (mainly by Cunard, P&O UK, Princess, Cruise Maritime). Full-length itineraries (eastbound or westbound) can be up to 110+ days round-trips and usually start from the UK (out of Southampton England ). On those, Australia is only a mid-itinerary destination offering one-way departures from Melbourne , Brisbane , Sydney , Fremantle-Perth and Adelaide back to Southampton (disembarkation port). The length of such segment itineraries could be up to 2 months (UK disembarkation). Smaller segments offer up to 40+ days long westbound itineraries to ports in Asia ( Singapore , Hong Kong , Dubai ), the USA (eastbound to San Francisco via Honolulu Hawaii ) or eastbound to South Africa (on Around Africa return routes to Europe). Longer segments may end in some of the biggest Mediterranean ports. Excluding the South Africa route, all westbound routes to Europe include Suez Canal transition .
  • "Circle Australia", "Around Australia" (full circumnavigation of the continent), Australia to Asia and Australia to New Zealand cruise itineraries leaving from Adelaide (round-trip) are rarely offered.
  • Cruise to Nowhere Adelaide deals are on 3-day round-trip itineraries without any ports of call along the route. Generally, these are themed voyages with themes like "food and wine", comedy, sports, wellness, music, "Australia Day", etc. There are onboard pre-scheduled theme events and activities like parties, concerts, meetings, presentations, tastings, etc.
  • Short-break ("Mini Cruises") visit Port Lincoln (4-day eastbound) and Melbourne (4-day westbound).

Australia repositioning cruises are considered most of the one-way itineraries between Australia and Asia (mainly to Singapore and Hong Kong) and also when ships change their Australian home (turnaround) ports. The latter include short one-way cruises between Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle, Melbourne. Adelaide to Fremantle-Perth cruises are 6-day (easbound relocation) coastal itineraries also visiting Kangaroo Island and Esperance .

Adelaide cruise terminal

Cruise ships dock in Port Adelaide Outer Harbour nearly 12 mi (19 km) north of the city centre. Shuttle buses to the shopping area are normally provided, taking 40 minutes to make the journey. The most popular beach at Glenelg can be accessed by a tram from the centre of the city.

Outer Harbor (Berth 2) cruise terminal

  • address - "Berth 2, Oliver Rogers Road, Outer Harbour, Port Adelaide South Australia, 5015"
  • location - on Le Fievre Peninsula (Oliver Rogers Road in the seaport suburb), approx 9 mi / 14 km northwest of the CBD (City Centre)
  • 1 berth (at Outer Harbor). The other South Australia cruise docking options are at Port Lincoln (1 berth), at Penneshaw (Kangaroo Island, anchorage) and at Robe (anchorage).
  • There are eight Outer Harbor berths (1 to 8) each with the following restrictions (limits) - max LOA length (985 ft / 300 m), max width (118 ft / 36 m), max depth/draft (47 ft / 14 m).
  • The Outer Harbor 2 berth (OH 2) is for passenger and Ro-Ro ships (motor vehicles carrier) operations, with a swing/turning basin 1310 ft / 400 m.
  • Flinders Ports has 2 pilot boats for ship assistance in Adelaide port.
  • Port Adelaide is owned and operated by Flinders Ports. This is a private company that owns and operates the 7 largest passenger and cargo ports and terminals in South Australia. These are Port Adelaide (cruise passenger terminal, grains/seeds, limestone, petroleum products, motor vehicles, metals, cement, fertilizers, mineral sands and concentrates, agricultural commodities, Iron-ore, steel, break-bulk and container cargo), Port Pirie (mineral concentrates and by-products, coal, general cargo, grains/seeds), Port Lincoln (grains/seeds, petroleum products, fertilizers), Port Giles (grains/seeds), Klein Point (limestone), Thevenard (gypsum, grains/seeds, salt, mineral sands) and Wallaroo (grains/seeds, fertilizers). All those ports and their facilities are operated under a 99-year land lease and port operation license. The company owns and maintains all shipping channels and berths also wharf areas, the adjacent land, roads, utilities and amenities.

Cruise ship terminal directions and parking

  • There are 2 commercial airports - Adelaide Airports (in the western suburbs) and Parafield (north of city centre).
  • By road - take A7 or A9 to Port Adelaide, then take A16 to Outer Harbor.
  • By train - the terminal is linked with the Outer Harbor Railway Station (approx 660 ft / 200 m away) on Oliver Rogers Road, opposite to the terminal.
  • By bus - bus line 333 services Oliver Rogers Road and runs to Port Adelaide. It links to other bus routes to adjacent suburbs and to the CBD (central business district).
  • Passenger pick-up/drop-off zone is located in front of the Passenger Terminal (entrance through Gate C). Vehicles using the zone are not to be left unattended.
  • Inside the terminal area there are no parking spaces available, except a limited number of 15-min spaces. Off-road parking is available south on Oliver Rogers Road (opposite to the terminal - see at the map below).

Adelaide port, beside its passenger (cruise ship) terminal, also has facilities to handle oil tankers and cargo ships (vehicle carriers, bulk carriers and container vessels) and dry dock facilities for marine vessel refurbishments and repairs.

  • UN-LOCODE (United Nations location code) - AUADL
  • supported by excellent road, rail and air infrastructure
  • deep water berths (max draught 47 ft / 14 m)
  • sheltered harbor area
  • access unrestricted by tides - mean high spring tide (8 ft / 2,4 m), mean high neap tide (4 ft / 1,3 m)
  • capability to accommodate 3 smaller vessels at a time
  • The Adelaide cruise ship terminal doesn't provide shore-to-ship power (shore-side electricity supply) which could reduce significantly the levels of emissions, noise and vibration in port.
  • The cruise port is accessible the whole year-round (24/7, 365 days a year).
  • Cruise ships usually arrive in Adelaide in early morning (at 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30, 7 or 8 am) and depart from Adelaide in late afternoon or in the evening (at 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 pm).

Adelaide Australia Port Guide

You might already know of Australia’s bigger destinations like Sydney and Melbourne, but you shouldn’t discount hidden gems like Adelaide when you take a cruise to Australia . After all, Adelaide has it all: incredible nature, sprawling wine country, and attractions to delight the whole family.

Downtown Adelaide is compact and easily walkable. The restaurant scene has exploded in recent years, and the city has developed a reputation as a foodie haven. If you want to venture outside of the city while on one of our Adelaide cruises, head to glamorous South Australian wine country for tastings and a glimpse into where over half of the country’s wine comes from. Take the afternoon to go church-hopping, or hike to the summit of the appropriately named Mount Lofty. Adelaide balances urban sophistication with a laid-back Australian attitude, which makes for an ideal day trip for the curious traveler.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to adelaide, adelaide botanic garden.

Stroll the Adelaide Botanic Garden for a day among Australia’s most beautiful flora. You can lose track of an afternoon as you explore 126 acres of beautiful green space. It’s a beloved attraction in Adelaide, and entry is completely free. During Adelaide cruises, this budget-friendly activity is a must-do for nature lovers.

Adelaide Zoo

Over 2,500 animals live at the massive Adelaide Zoo, like pandas, lions, seals, and all sorts of exotic species in between. The zoo is a perfect activity for all ages. Kids can burn off extra energy at the playground, while adults can enjoy animal encounters and guided tours with kangaroos, lemurs, and koalas, to name a few.

South Australian Museum

Near the University of Adelaide is the fascinating South Australian Museum, which pays extensive homage to Australian Aborigines and their cultural artifacts and traditions. No visit to Adelaide is complete without this trip back in time.

Morialta Conservation Park

If you’re craving time in rugged nature, take a trip just 30 minutes beyond Adelaide’s city center to Morialta Conservation Park, home to three cascading waterfalls, challenging hiking trails, and plenty of places to rock climb or mountain bike. Hikes range from 30 minutes to 3 hours, so there’s something to do for all skill levels and time constraints.

Top things to do in adelaide, shop at adelaide central market.

As one of Australia’s biggest markets, the Central Market is the place to go to get a sense of the city’s beating cultural heart while on one of our Adelaide cruises. South Australian goodies and fresh produce, freshly baked bread, olive oils, and cheeses are readily available. Come on an empty stomach and enjoy brunch from one of the many food stands and restaurants. You won’t be disappointed.

Hike Mount Lofty

360-degree views of the entire city await at the top of Mount Lofty, which is one of the tallest summits in the area. It’s a 20-minute drive from the center of Adelaide, so your best bet is taking a car or taxi. A cafe and souvenir shop wait at the top as a treat for all your hard work on the hike up.

Sip at the National Wine Centre

Sommeliers and wine lovers will fall in love with the National Wine Centre in Adelaide, which is close to the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Enjoy the winemaking exhibits which educate visitors on the critically important wine industry in Southern Australia. The centre also offers tastings and courses to teach you the ins and outs of Australian wine.

Go Historic Church Hopping

You can’t visit the so-called City of Churches and not check out Adelaide’s most beautiful places of worship. Take a self-guided tour of St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, admire the dramatic spires of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, and take a moment of silence at Australia’s oldest mosque, the Adelaide Mosque.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Adelaide Cruise Port

Crusoe’s Restaurant

Address: 141 Brebner Dr, West Lakes South Australia 5021

For fine dining in Adelaide, there’s an adventure waiting at Crusoe’s, where they break out the white linen napkins to bring you a sophisticated dining experience. Start with oysters and smoked trout croquettes before trying mains like the roasted pork belly with plum compote, or the crab and prawn tortellini.

Peter Rabbit

Address: Hindley Street, Liverpool Street Corner, Adelaide, South Australia 5000

The garden at Peter Rabbit is an excellent brunch spot. Ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. Meals include classics like avocado toast, overnight oats, ham and cheese croissants, and eggs your way. Many of the options are vegan and/or gluten free.

Peel Street

Address: 9 Peel St, Adelaide South Australia 5000

Peel Street takes a creative approach to their menu, and offers three course tasting menus for larger groups. Peel Street feels casual, but the menu is elevated to bring you small plates and changing daily specials based on what’s freshest.

Bakery on O’Connell

Address: 128 O'Connell St, Adelaide, South Australia 5006

This 24-hour bakery offers confections and freshly baked treats around the clock. Here, you’ll find everything from vegan goodies to wholesale items. Butter croissants beg to be eaten for breakfast, or go for huge donuts, cakes, savory quiche, and more.

Culture & History of the Adelaide Cruise Port

The area we now know as Adelaide was originally occupied by the native Kaurna population, and parts of the city were constructed to honor their culture and traditions. Adelaide was carefully built and painstakingly laid out because it was one of the first Australian cities that wasn’t built to accommodate convicts. Europeans arrived in Adelaide by the mid-19th century, and Adelaide was established as a British colony in 1836. Adelaide became the capital of South Australia, and today it’s home to a population of over 1.3 million people. Adelaide also consistently ranks in livability and makes “best places to live” lists each year.

Adelaide Port Facilities & Location

On one of our Adelaide cruises, your ship will dock at the Outer Harbor of Port Adelaide. The city center is a 25-mile, 30-minute taxi ride from the Adelaide cruise terminal. If you want to stay close to the cruise terminal, you can make a museum day out of it. The South Australia Maritime Museum and the National Railway Museum are located near the cruise port. There also will typically be a shuttle ready to take Adelaide cruise passengers to the center of town.

Transportation in Adelaide

Adelaide has an extensive bus and train system for navigating the city, plus car rentals are popular for tourists spending the day here. There’s a free bus that loops around the main sights in the city center. You can negotiate with your taxi driver to take you around to several city attractions while stopped on your Adelaide cruise. Hiring a car is a good plan if you’re interested in venturing out to wine country. Of course, once you get into the city center, it’s fairly navigable and flat if you prefer walking.

Shopping Near the Adelaide Cruise Port

Adelaide’s shopping scene knows how to appreciate both the simple pleasures and the finer things in life. Chocolatiers and cafes line the streets, including Haigh's Chocolates, where it’s recommended you make a reservation to see the chocolate-making facilities. You can’t leave Adelaide without trying South Australian wine, which is one of the region’s biggest exports. Fine jewelry is another given in Adelaide, where opals are the national gemstone.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll use the Australian dollar during your Adelaide cruise, and you’ll find it good to carry a little bit of cash when you go places to cover small expenses. Credit cards are commonly accepted in this part of South Australia, and you’ll find ATMs all over the city. Tipping isn’t customary in Australia, but rounding up to the nearest dollar with taxi drivers is extremely polite. Tipping in restaurants isn’t expected.

Editor's Note

Rocking and rolling is not how most people prefer their cruise ships. However, if you're sailing on a music-themed cruise, rock 'n' roll is the vibe you want as you soak up some sun and cruise the world with thousands of like-minded music fans.

Royal Caribbean's newest ship is also its priciest. Here's what it's like spending as little as possible, with no lobster or other upgrades.

  • Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas could be an expensive vacation compared to other cruise ships.
  • Sailing on the mega-ship without paying for any of its upcharged amenities is possible.
  • But it would mean spending at least $265 a day, staying sober, and repeating meals.

Insider Today

A budget vacation on Royal Caribbean's new wildly popular Icon of the Seas is possible. Just be prepared to stay sober, repeat meals, and pay at least $265 a day.

Right now, there's likely no better example of the mass-market cruise industry's shift toward the budget airline strategy — charge a cheap base fare and offer irresistible up-charged amenities — than Royal Caribbean's new world's largest cruise liner.

After all, what other ship comes with a $100,000-a-week cabin and a $200-per-person restaurant?

But it is possible to vacation on the mega-ship without giving into any of its upcharged restaurants and activities. If you're strong enough to do so, here's what your seven nights on Icon of the Seas could look like.

Be warned: It won't include lobsters or private lounges .

Less than half of Icon’s 28 eateries are complimentary, so you’ll likely repeat meals.

sea cruises adelaide

Picky eaters are sure to find at least one satisfactory option at the ship's three buffets, one of which is Mexican-themed.

If not, the complimentary pizza shop or sandwiches from the two on-board cafés might suffice.

In search of variety, grab a Mediterranean-style wrap or crepe at the five-stall food hall instead.

For a more formal dinner, budget cruisers can grub on a three-course meal at the complimentary dining room.

sea cruises adelaide

The three-floor restaurant has a rotating menu with classics like crab cakes, New York strip steak, and cheesecake.

Just don't expect lobster or filet mignon. Both cost extra.

For better or worse, guests snubbing upcharged options would also be snubbing booze.

sea cruises adelaide

Like most mass-market cruise ships, Icon of the Seas' 18 bars aren't free. If you want alcohol and sodas, be prepared to pay for a beverage package.

Thankfully, the ship’s complimentary amenities could distract you from your sobriety.

sea cruises adelaide

Icon's surf simulator and impressive six-slide waterpark won't run you a tab.

The same goes for its seven pools and nine hot tubs — save for one of each exclusive to guests who've booked a suite.

For drier activities, families could spend their afternoons scaling the rock climbing wall or testing their putt at the nine-hole mini-golf course.

sea cruises adelaide

Or they could work off their lunch buffet by sweating it out at the sports court — basketball and ping pong included — for no extra charges.

Fortunately, Icon of the Seas' nighttime entertainment is also a great equalizer. Its ice skating performance, rendition of the Broadway hit "Wizard of Oz," and multi-disciplinary dance, swim, and dive show are complimentary to all guests.

But if you want to test your fear of heights at the part-walking, part-agility, part-ziplining Crown's Edge , you'll have to cough up $49.

The arcade games aren't free, either.

Guests staying in suites have access to a shared outdoor lounge.

sea cruises adelaide

There's also the option to pay up to $700 for one day with a private cabana-like "casita."

But if you're on a budget, you'll have to fight "pool chair hogs" for the best poolside seating instead. (Consider bringing a sheet mask with you — a 25-minute facial at the ship's spa is almost $150.)

And hold off on your Instagram photo dumps until after your vacation.

sea cruises adelaide

Otherwise, you'll have to cough up $31 per day and device for streaming-enabled WiFi, totaling $217 for the duration of the cruise. (Icon of the Seas is exclusively operating seven-night sailings.)

But let’s face it: The base fare alone isn’t ultra-affordable compared to other cruise ships.

sea cruises adelaide

Patrick Scholes, a lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in late 2023, three months before Icon's launch , that the vessel was priced at a premium of "at least 50%, if not more."

Steep, compared to the typical 20% to 50% new-ship premiums.

The cheapest interior stateroom for 2024 currently costs $265 per person per day.

sea cruises adelaide

But even the windowless cabin comes with its own list of upgrades.

Travelers who want to pick their own stateroom must pay an additional $128 per person. If they opt for one of the larger (by at least one square foot) interior cabins, it'll be an extra $100.

Which is to say, good luck avoiding any of the upcharged amenities on your Icon of the Seas vacation .

Regent Seven Seas Grandeur is the third of three sister...

The luxury pedigree that Regent Seven Seas welcomed with Seven Seas Explorer in 2016 continued with sister ship Seven Seas Splendor in 2020, but the third and final sister Seven Seas Grandeur offers up the best of class.

The ship’s features include the first Fabergé egg with a permanent home at sea. The blue-pearl-and-diamond sculpture titled “Journey in Jewels” is a small but commanding centerpiece rotating within its display case in the atrium for travelers to enjoy as soon as they step on board.

The egg is revealed as seven branches break away like waves that represent the Seven Seas. The ship’s godmother is Sarah Fabergé, the great-granddaughter of Peter Carl Fabergé.

It’s part of a 1,600-piece art collection that includes classic black-and-white photos from global destinations adorning the hallways between cabins to the steakhouse’s original Picassos. Travelers could spend a good afternoon wandering hallways and public spaces, akin to visiting a museum. A new app for the line also offers a digital art tour, like a personal guide.

“With each new ship, our team works tirelessly to identify and source the most impressive array of art pieces, building a collection that would be enviable by most modern-day museums, to ensure our guests’ time onboard is as enriching and thought-provoking as their time on land,” said Regent Seven Seas Cruises President Andrea DeMarco.

All three ships in the Explorer class are about 55,500 gross tons, with Grandeur sporting a 744-guest capacity among its all-suite offerings. The line has three older ships and just had two larger vessels ordered by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are not due until 2026 and 2029.

Until then, the three sister ships continue the line’s most refined take on their global, all-inclusive itineraries, with both Splendor and Grandeur set to return to Miami for the 2024-25 winter Caribbean season.

The line has given all three Explorer-class ships a succession of superlative monikers. Seven Seas Grandeur was dubbed with “A Heritage of Perfection,” following Seven Seas Explorer’s “the most luxurious cruise ship ever” and Seven Seas Splendor’s “the ship that perfects luxury.”

With 548 crew, Grandeur boasts a 1:1.36 crew-to-passenger ratio similar to its two sisters, so needs among travelers are attended to promptly.

The ship’s interior spaces are crafted by Miami-based Studio DADO, which has put its mark on sister lines Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

The Compass Rose restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur was designed by Miami-based Studio DADO. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

That includes new takes on main dining venue Compass Rose, which DADO founding partner Yohandel Ruiz called “a feast for the eyes.”

It’s filled with fantastical tree-like arches right out of Alice in Wonderland with a cascading waterfall sculpture. At night, thousands of individually placed crystal-faceted leaves encrusted on pillars and branches illuminate the space.

The ship has five signature restaurants on board, including steakhouse Prime 7, Italian option Sette Mari at La Veranda, French offering Chartreuse and the latest version of Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, this time bringing a delicate bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture as the centerpiece at the entrance. It’s a welcome and fitting addition to the dragon and prayer wheel sculptures on its two sister ships.

This bronze-and-glass bonsai cherry blossom tree sculpture welcomes diners into the Pacific Rim restaurant on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur, the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The ship has 15 suite categories, all with their own balconies. The pinnacle of sailing options is the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite at $11,000 a night. It features a $200,000 Hästens Vividus custom handmade mattress, an in-suite spa retreat with a personal sauna and steam room and 270-degree views from the ship’s bow from a 1,292-square-foot wraparound veranda. Those passengers get their own butler and personal car and driver in every port.

Some seven-night Miami-based sailings go for as low as $3,700 per person based on double occupancy.

For everyone on board is the spa with an infinity pool that looks out over the stern, fitness center, jogging track, casino, several lounges, card room, library and main pool. Top-deck fun includes pickleball, shuffleboard, mini golf and ping-pong.

A big draw to Regent is the mostly inclusive offerings, including free and unlimited shore excursions, round-trip flights, unlimited internet, prepaid gratuities, ground transfers and other amenities.

One of the best offerings on board, though, isn’t free. Back again is the Culinary Arts Kitchen, a staple borrowed from sister line Oceania Cruises, but a massively popular offering that lets 18 students create memorable dishes under the guidance of a chef team.

Chef John Stephano leads a class in the Culinary Arts Kitchen on board Regent Seven Seas Grandeur on Jan. 25, 2024. The ship is the third of three sister ships for the luxury cruise line that debuted in late 2023. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

During a preview cruise for media in January out of PortMiami, the class was led by the amiable Chef John Stephano talking students through a pair of sample dishes – pasta al limone, which is lemon pasta, and French crêpes with an allspice berry ice cream, offered during what are normally two-hour-long classes twice per day on sailings.

“I promise you’re going to make delicious and delightful food,” he said but joked that “anybody that struggles with their culinary skills today, we’ll be sending you down to the galley to help us out.”

Stephano deftly demonstrates and drops bits of history and detail during the demonstration with students gathered around, who then go one of the 18 individual stations equipped with induction cooktops, stainless steel sinks and a collection of tools, tongs, pots and pans, while he and assistant chefs make the rounds to ensure everyone is figuring out the steps.

The course options vary per cruise pulling from nearly 50 curated thematic class titles such as “1493: The Foodies’ New World,” “Familia Cubana” and “Flip-Flop Floribbean.” Classes are an extra $89, which is about the only extra-cost feature on a Regent sailing. They are often themed to the location where the ships sail.

The culinary team also has a hand in creating some of the unique excursions, which then pair up with some of the classes.

Grandeur just finished out its first run about the Caribbean during mostly sold-out itineraries from PortMiami and is now amid a set of Mediterranean voyages for summer 2024. It will then make its way to New York for fall color itineraries of Canada and New England in September and October and then return to Miami to begin the winter Caribbean sailing season into 2025.

Failed SA Senate candidate Raina Cruise found guilty of assaulting police officer outside Adelaide pub

An anti-vaccine protester and failed South Australian Senate candidate has been found guilty of assaulting a police officer in 2021.

District Court Judge Jo-Anne Deuter found Raina Jane Cruise intentionally harmed a female police officer in the Adelaide CBD in 2021, in an attack that left the officer with clumps of hair pulled out and facial bruising.

Constable Anthea Beck and a colleague were tasked to investigate an altercation involving a group of people and security guards at the Exeter Hotel, on Rundle Street.

Cruise had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault against two security guards.

Raina Cruise wearing sunglasses outdoors.

During the trial, Cruise had claimed her arrest was unlawful , but in her verdict Judge Deuter rejected that claim.

She said she was satisfied that Constable Beck tried to inform the accused of why she was being arrested, which was for failing to provide her identification.

"Her aggressive response meant that Beck immediately encountered a situation where she had to physically manage the accused's attack upon her."

Judge Deuter said even without sound, CCTV vision of the incident showed the aggression of Ms Cruise towards Constable Beck.

"In a time span of just two seconds, the accused moved aggressively towards Beck and swung her arm at her, knocking off her police hat," she said.

"Within six seconds she has grabbed Beck's hair and started to drag her to the ground."

Injuries to a police officer following an alleged assault.

Prosecutor Greg Dudzinski asked the court to revoke Cruise's bail due to her history of other violent offending, which included an earlier assault on a police officer.

Cruise's lawyer, Andrew Graham, said the prior offences were not "the most serious", and sought a three-month adjournment to get a psychological report for Cruise.

"Cruise has gone through more in her life than most people have, including having an infant child pass away at a very young age and her husband die of an accident," he said.

"It might very well be that the alcohol issues which have led to some of the matters on the antecedent record are explained against that background.

"It's my submission that this isn't a matter that necessarily would result in an immediate term of imprisonment."

Cruise ran in the 2022 federal election for the Informed Medical Options Party, campaigning for bodily autonomy, and was a regular at anti-vaccination rallies.

Her party received 2,248 votes.

Judge Deuter remanded Cruise on continuing bail to return to court at a date to be set.
