Touring Ireland as a Senior

Ireland is one of the most popular destinations in the world for tourists of all ages, but today we’d like to focus specifically on older travelers. We’d like to write a brief but informative guide for seniors visiting Ireland. If anything we write inspires you to travel with Overland Ireland, please browse our Jewel Small Group Tours of Ireland .

If you’d like an even more personalized experience, consider our Ireland private guided tours instead. Please get in touch if you have any questions; we always like hearing from people interested in visiting Ireland.

Is Ireland a Good Tourist Destination for Seniors?

Cliffs at sunset, Dunquin, Kerry, Ireland

Yes. Ireland is a great tourist destination for older people. That’s the simplest answer to the question…

The longer answer looks at the kinds of activities available in Ireland, how close Ireland’s attractions are together, and other myriad factors, including the type of vacation you choose (but more on this later).

Ireland’s best and most beautiful attractions are relatively close together — at least in comparison to the US, Canada, and other larger countries. When you consider that Ireland is eight times smaller than Texas, you begin to get a sense of the size.

But what we lack in geography we more than make up for with our extensive history, stretching back through our castles, stately homes, and neolithic structures — many of which are significantly older than the Egyptian pyramids.

Lower Travel Times in Ireland

Having such a dense array of historical and cultural treasures means that travel times in Ireland are smaller than many other tours. You can journey for twenty minutes in Ireland and arrive somewhere completely new, with its own unique history, and people who speak with a different accent.

While some 70-year-old travellers are in better condition than most 30-year-olds, they’re the exception. Most seniors have one or two health or movement issues that can be exacerbated by long stretches of time spent driving around the country. This is why Ireland’s smaller size and densely packed attractions are ideal for seniors.

Lower travel times aren’t just good for older people; they’re better for everyone. However, less time spent in a tour vehicle (even our extremely comfortable Overland Ireland mini-coach) is better for anyone with sore joints, injuries, aches, and pains. To put a number on it, the travel time per day averages at slightly less than 3 hours her day, excluding stops.

What are the Best Irish Tours for Seniors?

Cliffs of Moher

It’s really hard to define exactly what constitutes the best tour of Ireland for seniors. This is because we don’t know you (whoever is reading this). We also have serious doubts about any company that thinks all people over 60 are alike and would therefore enjoy exactly the same experience…

Instead, it’s much easier to describe the kind of Ireland tour that is more likely to suit seniors. All of our Jewel Tours are designed for a more relaxed kind of traveller, making them ideal for seniors.

We designed our Jewel Tours to offer a laidback travel experience with as much personalization as possible. How do we make it personal? We keep our small group tours of Ireland especially small, meaning that guests have plenty of time with their own dedicated tour guides.

While some tours might have too many people to allow everyone to ask questions, we actively encourage everyone on our tours to ask as many questions as possible.

After all, what is travel or tourism but curiosity in its most pure, most joyful form?

To help you make some decisions about your next Irish adventure, we have put together a short summary of three of our most popular Irish tours below:

The Ultimate Ireland 10-day Package — This is exactly what it sounds like: our best attempt to make the best Ireland tour possible over 10 days. Highlights include a trip to the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher, the stunning Dingle Peninsula, and the Giant’s Causeway up in Northern Ireland.

The Ireland to Island 7-day Tour — This tour package takes you to many of the most sought-after places in Ireland, such as Killarney National Park, Galway Bay, and the Aran Islands. But what makes it stand out is that the tour also takes you to Skellig Michael, an enigmatic mountainous island off the coast of Kerry that has an ancient monastery built atop its peak.

The Magical Southern 5-day Ireland Tour — This tour is shorter than the other two, which may suit travellers who can’t commit to a week or longer. While only five days, Ireland is packed with wonderful sights, and we fit as many as possible into the itinerary without ever making it feel rushed. Visit the Ring of Kerry, Killarney National Park, Dingle, and the Cliffs of Moher!

Learn About Your Irish Ancestors on Vacation

Medieval castle on Ireland’s coast

While people young and old can show an interest in their ancestors, we tend to find that as people get older they reflect more on where they’ve come from.

And, given the extensive size of the Irish diaspora (especially in North America, Australia, and New Zealand), we find that a lot of our guests have one or two places they’re interested in visiting specifically because it’s where their grandparents are from, or because they can trace back a distant ancestor to a specific little village.

If your place of interest is along the route of your Overland Ireland Tour, please tell your tour guide as there’s a good chance they’ll be able to stop off for a while.

And if they can’t, they will be happy to give you the information needed to visit this spot on your own, after the tour is over. It’s this kind of personalized service that gets us so many 5-star reviews .

There is much more we could say about Ireland, but we hope we’ve at least convinced a few readers that Ireland is an excellent place to visit as an older traveller.

If you have any questions, please get in touch . Your grand Irish adventure might be only a few clicks away!

Hello from Ireland, I'm Danielle 👋

Every day, I'm asked to recommend the best Ireland vacation packages for seniors.

I always point people in the direction of Driftwood Journeys of Discovery .

The group size is small, the flexible itineraries are focused on culture and the reviews from recent guests are 5/5!

Now read on to learn why I reckon Driftwood Tours are the perfect choice for senior travellers...

Small Group = Personal Service 🚐

With Driftwood, you are never just a number.

There are NEVER more than 15 guests on any Driftwood tour of Ireland.

With this small group size, each and every one of our guests benefits from personalised service.

Our tour guide team go above and beyond to devote special attention to everyone on board, tailoring each day's activities to the group's taste.

I guarantee that your VagaGuide will be on first-name terms with you during your tour.

What's more, being in a small group allows you time to get to know your fellow travel buddies.

"Andrew, our guide, took such good care of everyone and was funny and kind and knowledgable ..." The group was perfect. I enjoyed that the group was small enough to get to know each other and to enjoy each other throughout the tour. Liz - TripAdvisor , September 2023

Unlike normal bus tours of Ireland, our slick and comfortable Mercedes tour vehicles are compact in size.

Not only does that allow your Driftwood group to explore off the beaten path, it means your VagaGuide can hear — and answer — all of your questions.

And, most importantly, you can hear your VagaGuide's stories, songs and jokes, even from the back seat!

Ireland Tours — But At Your Own Pace 😌

There's no rush with Driftwood.

Driftwooders don't hike, they stroll!

In contrast to our active tour style , which features adventure activities, the amount of walking on a Driftwood itinerary each day is kept to a minimum.

A Driftwood mini-coach parked outside a traditional Irish cottage

Our VagaGuides are highly-trained to accommodate every guest’s fitness and mobility levels.

If you walk with a cane, or have a condition that makes exertion challenging, there's absolutely no need to worry. You’re in good hands.

Quality Time To Explore 🏰

Driftwood itineraries leave you plenty of time to stretch your legs.

Forget about hurrying from tourist spot to tourist spot.

By focusing on smaller towns and less-visited attractions, Driftwood gives you the best possible experience.

Stroll through quaint villages , stopping to shop for souvenirs and browse craft shops.

We'll bring you to the best of Ireland's spectacular natural scenery where you can breathe in the fresh air and really connect with Ireland.

"While it's a scheduled tour, they gave us the opportunity to make additional stops to see more sights if the time allowed. We never felt rushed or that we missed anything because of time ... It was so nice to have your time in Ireland planned out, and you can let someone else do all the driving. I could take a nap or talk with my fellow travelers! This tour allows you to see the beautiful countryside and historical sights and time for shopping." Caroline - TripAdvisor , September 2023

Ireland Tour with my Grandfather

We started our journey from India and reached Dublin (the capital of Ireland) in 10 hours. We hired a car for sightseeing, which I felt was much better than a bus tour.

Ireland tour is an expensive tour but an affordable one. One week costs $2685 per person, including flights, food, accommodation, etc. It was a fantastic trip with busy and action-packed days.

  • Day 1:  We started and ended our tour in Dublin. In Dublin, Ha’penny Bridge is famous. It’s the first pedestrian bridge built in 1816 across the Liffey River. The tour was for seven days. We reached the Ashling Hotel by the shuttle service provided by the airport. After taking a rest for a few hours, we visited River Liffey. We also experienced the Guinness Storehouse, where the ticket cost was €25 for adults, €18.5 for students and seniors, and children €16 (13-17). Other fabulous places are Christchurch Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Custom House. Our local tour director guided this orientation of tours.
  • Day 2 : We departed from Dublin and headed towards Killarney. First, we stopped in Cahir to see the castle. Then, we climbed the ramparts in Blarney Castle to enjoy the scenic beauty.
  • Day 3 : We went to The Ring of Kerry to enjoy mountain and sea views. You can also go for a hike there. Must carry good walking shoes, sunscreen, and rain gear.
  • Day 4 : We visited Killarney- Foynes- Cliffs of Moher- Limerick, Pan Am’s Flying Boat in Foynes. The invention of Irish coffee was a part of learning there. ‘Cliffs of Moher’, whose beauty is incomparable. It’s the most visited tourist place and our memorable part also. From here, we can see outstanding natural beauty. The Cliff is 702 feet. It’s also a specially protected area for seabirds.
  • Day 5 : The destination spot was Dingle. We explored the beautiful peninsula with historical wonders. Inch Beach was our first stop. Then we went to the edge of Europe, also known as Sla Head. Don’t miss clicking the photo with Fungi (name of a Dolphin) that has been there for 30 years.
  • Day 6 : We departed from Doolin village and explored moon-like terrain. Last came back to the hotel in Dublin, and our flight was at 6:00 pm.

Britain and Ireland Experience (12 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Experience (12 Days)

Greg made this a wonderful experience. He is one of the most organised, & factually correct guides we could have hoped for. He had the ideal personality for this job, as everyone felt included and equally shared his time with every person on the trip. I was travelling alone and was not sure of how this would affect my experience. Greg made sure that everyone got the chance to sit with new people, which made the "getting to know you" so much easier. I believe that Greg hast he skills to go far in this industry and I sincerely hope that I will encounter him on a trip in The future. He took the time st the end of our trip to say a fond farewell over some drinks. Coming home from our Scottish entertainment is a memory I will never forget. Man we had some fun on this trip & it was all because of Greg.

Best of UK & Ireland Tour

Best of UK & Ireland

Our tour leader Peter was amazing! He took such good care of us, entertained us with stories, folklore and history everywhere we went. Lee was shadowing and proved to be an amazing guide as well! His stories and history were such a gift! Lee...you're welcome! Paul has got to be the BEST driver in the UK! It was incredible the way he navigated the narrow roads, bridges and entrances without a scratch to the bus! His humour and general good nature made the bus trip a truly memorable vacation! Expat is exceptional! Thank you for the memories and new friends!

Britain and Ireland Panorama (16 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Panorama (16 Days)

Everything about the trip was good, including the weather, and Greg even influenced that, playing the Beatles "Here comes the sun" to start every morning. Full breakfast was good fuel for the day. Greg was enthusiastic, knowledgable, amusing, and patient with tardy guests. The coach drivers (Liam and Tommy) were superb. The porterage was a very nice touch.

Our tour guide John did a wonderful job giving us information about each site we visited and many more sItems we passed along the way. He was knowledgeable and witty. He was always pleasant and helpful and answered questions from all of us. He kept us on schedule and informed at all times. John is a great asset to Cosmos/Globus.

From the Shannon to the Thames

It was a great trip overall. Accommodations weren't great in Bristol and some of the food (lunch & suppers) provided mediocre. Continental breakfasts for the entire trip were fabulous. Our guide, Finola, and our driver, Philip, were both amazing.

Greg was wonderful to travel with. He was well versed in our destinations, knew the history and the back stories and was able to answer all of our questions. He also has a good sense of humor.

Britain and Ireland Experience (15 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Experience (15 Days)

Our Britain and Ireland Experience (15 day) was a well organized and very competently managed trip. Our tour guide Anthony was very knowledgeable, caring, hard working, he wanted all of us to enjoy the sights and put in the extra effort to meet that goal, when our itinerary had to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances ( ferry delay) he quickly adjusted our schedule so we would be in the right place at the right time, our Driver, David, drove us safely through busy cities and on very small roads with skill and competency and worked diligently moving all our suitcases on and off the bus , this was not just a bus trip but a very enjoyable and memorable vacation definitely made so by our tour guide and driver, we’ll done! We will book with Costsaver again when it it’s time for next trip. Ron and Elisabeth

What people love about England and Ireland Tours for Seniors

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
Excellent service and planning to maximize our time to see everything
I would recommend this tour. Our tour guide was wonderful. Our coach driver was wonderful. Wish we had more time at some of our stops but overall it was great.

Killarney – a laid-back arrival on the emerald isle.

For any golf trip to Ireland, it makes sense to fly into Shannon instead of Dublin. It is in the country’s Southwest, which is where the most famous and beautiful courses are located. You will land in Dublin, and it would be a five-hour cross-country transfer just to reach the first tee. So, you will land in Shannon today and be less than two hours to Killarney, which is a colorful old city that is situated inside a national park. You will check into your boutique hotel in the old town, and you can spend the afternoon exploring at leisure. Irish music seeps out from small pubs, colorfully painted houses line the main streets, and there will be a sense that you are in a town where time has stood still.

What's Included:

Killarney – Majestic Ireland and the Waterville Links

Southwestern Ireland is majestic. Green valleys snake between raggedy mountain peaks, slopes are dotted with sheep, and lakes appear still and serene, reflecting the sky above. Rivers can be crossed by tiny stone bridges, and often, the coastline is partially hidden by mist. The most famous Irish scenery is found on the Ring of Kerry, which is a beautiful route that you will explore today. Halfway around this ring is Waterville, which is one of Ireland’s most remote and spectacular golf courses. Winding around a promontory that is entirely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, this is a course where the wind will blow, and sand will be a constant challenge.

While the location grabs your attention, it is the number of unique holes that you will most remember. The front nine can prove to be a gentle introduction into Irish links golf with undulating fairways, tall dunes, and ocean vistas. You do not need a booming drive here. Precision and finesse are of the essence, especially on the stunning par five on the eleventh hole. On the back nine, you will follow the coastline’s curves all the way to a cute clubhouse that is perched above the waves. After your round, you can choose to complete the Ring of Kerry with your driver-guide or return the way you came to Killarney.

Killarney – Captivating Tralee Golf Club and the Dingle Peninsula

There are links courses that play out along the seaside, and then there are links courses where it feels like you are teeing off into the ocean. Tralee is of the latter category as it is beautifully situated on rugged cliffs. Look one way, and you can see small coves and pebbled beaches, but turn your head just 30 degrees, and a daunting tee shot stares you in the face. This was the first links course that Arnold Palmer designed back in 1984, and he famously said that while he was responsible for the front nine, it was God that did the rest.

Grabbing your attention from the very first tee, this will be one of those courses where you spend the evening debating and disagreeing as to which is the best hole. There are just too many to pick one. Perhaps the seventh will be your favorite, which is where you line up on a castle that stands adjacent to the green, or any of those hotels where if you hit to the ball to the right then gets gobbled by rocks and waves. The 17th hole is a short, par four that is a favorite of golfers of all ages. Younger players who play long tend to end up in the ravine, but playing short and steady is the way to reach the tiny, clifftop green.

After 18 holes and the excellent clubhouse, you can spend your afternoon on the Dingle Peninsula. Like Tralee, this peninsula is dominated by cliffs that have been carved by rough waves. You can begin exploring and will notice how the locals speak Gaelic here. Nowhere else on the island has preserved tradition as much as Dingle, and even with just an afternoon, it can be an eye-opening experience. You can choose to take a boat trip to see the peninsula’s famous resident dolphin or find a pub with a small terrace that overlooks the harbor.

Killarney – Playing Ballybunion Old Course, Ireland’s Finest Links Course

Dunes soar wildly along the Atlantic Coast, castle ruins peek from the sand, and grasses rise from the dunes, giving the landscape an unkempt and almost feral appearance. It can seem that you have arrived in a place of vast wilderness, but this is a golf course and arguably the finest golf course in the world. Eighteen holes twist around the ocean and Ireland’s tallest sand dunes, most of them featuring dogleg holes and hidden greens. Old Ballybunion has been revered since 1926, and hardly anything has changed since it hosted the Irish Championship back in 1937. Not much is cultivated here, and this adds to the experience, especially as you can stare down a hole that seems to be more sand than fairway.

This is well regarded as Ireland’s ultimate golf course, and as you would expect, it will be a test of every part of your game. However, a good golfer does not necessarily need to go the way of Bill Clinton and other presidents by using mulligans on multiple holes. When the breeze is slight, it is possible to score well, especially if you can play with placement over power. Strong onshore winds exaggerate the challenge. If this is the case, then you will be smart to play from the shorter tees. Like Tralee, it can be hard to pinpoint a favorite hole after you have played. Maybe your favorite will be the seventh, eleventh, or just the feeling of teeing off from a cliff’s edge.

Killarney – Laid-Back Day in Killarney and the Irish Open Golf Course

Mountains encircle Killarney and its legendary Killeen golf course. They will provide the backdrop to today, both on the fairway and in the small city. After three rounds of golf, you will play on Ireland’s best inland course. Despite the surrounding mountains, the course is mostly flat although the back tees measure 7,000 plus yards, so it may be worth playing shorter. The course is excellent, and it will be an excellent contrast from the last few days. Mountain surroundings make the holes so enjoyable, and you can be better off having a laid-back day rather than continually hacking out from the unforgiving bunkers.

Just like Killarney itself, the golf club is famously welcoming. After 18 holes, it can be easy to spend the rest of the day in the clubhouse, chatting with members and recalling famous scenes from the Irish Open that Killeen hosts annually. If the clubhouse and Guinness do not take over, then the rest of today can be spent in Killarney National Park or the small city. Your driver-guide can show you around from the lakes to the best places to hear Irish storytelling. Killarney is filled with traditional pubs, and many of them have entertainment during the evenings in the form of dancing, music, and storytelling.

County Clare – The St Andrews of Ireland and Overnight in a Castle

This golf tour for seniors is not just about where you can play, but also where you can stay. After a 90-minute transfer, you will check into a medieval, Irish castle. Glorious, green grounds extend around its turrets and stone frame, and from the window, you can gaze upon the woodland and a misty horizon. Much of the interior has been preserved to help maintain a medieval feel although the bathrooms and beds have obviously been updated. This is Ireland’s most celebrated castle accommodation, and you will spend the final two nights here. By staying in County Clare, you also open up a new series of golf courses to play, starting today with the Saint Andrews of Ireland.

Enchanting and evocative, Lahinch is a rugged and wild course along the shores of Liscannor Way. You play out and back with a number of highly unusual holes throughout the 18. For example, on the fourth, you must find a rippled fairway between towering dunes, then negotiate a path around a dune that literally stands upon the fairway. The fifth hole, which is a par three, can really test your skills as well with the green and flag being seemingly swallowed by dunes. Still, despite the Saint Andrews-like scenery and eccentric holes, this could be the course that you score the best round of during your vacation.

County Clare – Teeing Off on a Final Links Challenge

Rolling seaside dunes and dramatic Atlantic waves are the two features that will have dominated every day on your trip to Ireland. Doonbeg is no different, which is a Greg Norman-designed course that you have you playing with Mother Nature. Each fairway appears to be carved from the wilderness, and the sheer abundance of natural hazards can require patience and precision. However, you should find that your scores are improving throughout your trip. By now, you will be accustomed to the challenges, including choosing one bigger club than usual as the distances are measured in meters rather than yards.

After 18 relaxed holes and the obligatory clubhouse stop, you can return to the castle for your final afternoon in Ireland. You can also choose to do some more exploring with the city of Limerick that provides more than just riddles. Adare is a fabulous, if somewhat, touristy journey into the past where you can wander lanes of thatched-roof houses and ride a horse and carriage. You can also opt for a one-hour journey out to the coast and the Cliffs of Moher, which is arguably Ireland’s most famous sight. Whatever you choose, the castle will provide an elegant final evening either sat around a fire or on an outdoor terrace.

County Clare – Departure from Shannon Airport

It’s only a 20-minute transfer to Shannon Airport, so you can take your time this morning before your departure.

Trip Highlights

Detailed Description

Ireland’s luscious landscapes always make for a spectacular vacation. Coastal cliffs hang over tiny beach coves and Atlantic Ocean waves, and beautiful valleys carve a path through green mountains. These are stunning settings to walk, but even more stunning settings to play a round of golf. Dotted around Ireland’s southwest are some of the world’s most celebrated golf courses, including Ballybunion Old Course, Tralee, and Lahinch. Steeped in history and defined by Mother Nature, these courses will provide a serious golfing challenge, but in their undulating fairways and cliff-perched greens, they will also provide a vacation of serenity and surreal views. There really is no other landscape like southwest Ireland and golf is always a great excuse to go exploring.

Handcrafted for senior visitors, this seven-night tour can be further customized to include other bucket-list courses or attractions. It is the perfect itinerary for first-time golf visitors to Ireland, incorporating five iconic courses and the spiritual home of the Irish Open. You will spend five nights in Killarney, which is a city that is packed with Irish tradition and charm. Here, you can get to know Guinness, Irish storytelling, dancing, and the friendly atmosphere for which the country is known. County Clare will be your destination for the final two nights, where you will stay in a castle and tee off at two of the country’s wildest and most spectacular courses.

Along the way, there will be plenty of traditional, Irish sightseeing as well. For example, on day two, you will travel halfway around the Ring of Kerry for a round at Waterville. The highlights of the Dingle Peninsula will beautifully complement Tralee Golf Club on day three. A relaxed pace will continue throughout, and tee times can be adjusted to your preferences. Usually, you will play in the morning and have the rest of the day to enjoy the sights, whether that is just the clubhouse or any town or attraction that you wish to see.

The reason for being here is the golf, and the six picturesque courses will take you on an eye-catching journey around rural and southwest Ireland. Waterville offers a dazzling location and a number of highly unique holes, making it an excellent introduction for what is to come. Arnold Palmer designed Tralee winds around Atlantic Ocean cliffs, which is one of those courses where so many holes can linger long in your memory. Ballybunion Old Course is Ireland’s premier golf course and is perhaps the finest course anywhere in the world. It will be a supreme test of your ability, so it is best to have a couple of rounds under your belt before teeing off.

On day five, you can take a break from the seaside with a relaxed day in and around Killarney. This is a city that is located within a national park, and Killarney Golf Club’s superb Killeen course offers a very different scenic challenge. As with the other courses, you should be wary of the plus 7,000-yard back tees. You can often gain more enjoyment from playing shorter, especially on courses where golfers win championships without finishing under par. After transferring to County Clare and the castle, you will play at Lahinch, which is well regarded as the country’s second best course. You will culminate your golfing excursion at Doonbeg Golf Club, which is a course that is dominated by Mother Nature and Ireland’s green landscapes.

Dublin, Ireland

Famed for poets, playwrights, and pubs, Dublin is a city of contrasts: home to some of the English language’s greatest writers, the city is also known for its down-to-earth pub culture; the heart of modern, prosperous Ireland, Dublin is also where the scars of Ireland’s history of colonisation are made most apparent.

Ironically for the city long at the heart of Irish history, Dublin (from the Irish Dubh Linn; Norse Dyfflin) was established by Viking settlers in Ireland in the 9th century. Building on the south bank of the River Liffey, where Dublin Castle is today, the Norse established a prosperous city. Following the beginning of rule from Great Britain, Dublin declined, until by the 17th century, the city was a small town of only 9,00o inhabitants.

From this not particularly auspicious start, Dublin would prosper through the 18th century, becoming the second city of the British Empire. Growth extended beyond the city walls, establishing the famous elegant neighbourhoods of Georgian Dublin that define the city today. Trinity College became a centre of Enlightenment thought. However, while the Anglo-Irish elite prospered, the majority of Irish people – Catholics disenfranchised by harsh penal laws that hindered their right to own property, be educated, or enter the professions – remained in poverty.

The 1801 Act of Union abolished Ireland’s parliament, thus diminishing Dublin’s status. The city’s Georgian houses became slums, debtors filled the prisons, and after the Potato Famine, the city became a magnet for peasants from rural Ireland.

Dublin Castle.

The late 19th century saw Dublin become a centre of nationalist and cultural ferment. The poet W.B. Yeats established the Abbey Theatre, which staged nationalist plays and nurtured the great writers of the Irish Literary Revival. At the same time, young Irish men and women joined societies to learn Gaelic and preserve traditional Irish sports such as hurling. Their activities paid the way for the 1916 Easter Rising, in which nationalists seized the General Post Office, proclaiming the Republic of Ireland. The brutal put down of the Rising by the authorities, including the execution of its leaders, galvanised Irish support for independence from Great Britain, leading to the outbreak of the Irish War of Independence in 1919. The Irish Free State was established in 1921, and Ireland became independent of the United Kingdom in 1949.

Today, with over a quarter of Ireland’s population, Dublin is a vibrant and prosperous city. Nonetheless, the city’s turbulent past is etched into its fabric. Dublin Castle has long been among the most widely-hated of Irish castles – a symbol of occupation and oppression for the Irish Catholic majority, its inhabitants regarded it as dank, outdated, and uncomfortable! It’s nonetheless worth a tour to see the elegant Georgian rooms, now used by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar – the leader of the Irish government – to entertain dignitaries and official guests.

If you want to learn about Irish history, a visit to Kilmainham Gaol is a must. This bleak structure, built in 1796, has borne witness to virtually every Irish uprising since. Prisoners here have included Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell, and the leaders of the 1916 uprising, 14 of whom (out of the total number of 15 deaths) were shot in the prison yard here.

Dublin is also one of the world’s great cities of literature, home to great writers including Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett. The writer most indelibly linked with the city is James Joyce, whose Dubliners, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses are set in a vividly rendered Dublin. Ulysses, generally acclaimed as one of the greatest works of literature in the English language, traces the day in the life of two Dubliners, Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus. Joyce was determined to accurately depict the city in his novel, and Bloom’s and Dedalus’s paths through the city can be easily traced on a fascinating literary walking tour.

Old Library

Literary and intellectual Dublin can also be soaked up in the elegant buildings of Trinity College, in the heart of Georgian Dublin. The Old Library – the towering shelves of which seem like a figment of a bibliophile’s dream – is the main draw here, home to the beautiful illuminations of the ancient Book of Kells.

Dublin is also famous for its vibrant pub culture. While the legendary Temple Bar can be a bit touristy these days (particularly on St Patrick’s Day), if you head into the neighbourhoods, you’ll find local institutions where the clientele has been unchanged for years. Make sure to order a Guinness and head to the Guinness Storehouse to see how the legendary stout is produced.

Odyssey Traveller visits Dublin as part of our Tour of Ireland. Taking in the entirety of the island of Ireland, both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, our guided tour winds clockwise around the Emerald Isle. We begin in Dublin, where we see historic highlights including St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle, and Trinity College. Leaving Dublin city, our escorted tour heads to County Cork, visiting the Rock of Cashel and Blarney Castle (home to the famous Blarney Stone) on the way. Our coach tour then winds its way up through the rugged scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way. Beginning in Killarney, Kerry, we see the stunning scenery of Killarney National Park, the Ring of Kerry, and the Dingle Peninsula. Heading north, our guided tour visits the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, and the Burren in County Clare, before we travel to the remote Aran Islands. In Galway City we enjoy traditional music and make a day trip to Kylemore Abbey and Connemara National Park to soak up the fascinating history and beautiful country of surrounding Galway county.
