Posted by Steve Emecz on March 29, 2020

With all the museums and art galleries closed due to COVID-19, we tracked down a virtual tour of The Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street.

It's one of the locations featured in Alistair Duncan's wonderful tour of London through the eyes of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - ' Close To Holmes '.

We also have a virtual tour of The Art of Sherlock Holmes .

...and please remember every book bought on this site we will plant a tree as part of our #bookstotrees campaign.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Sherlock Holmes Museum

Sherlock holmes museum ultimate guide.

With four novels, 46 short stories, and 75 different actors playing the character in more than 200 films, it’s no wonder why so many fans make the pilgrimage to London’s Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street. (It is the “world’s most famous address,” after all.)

Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, Sherlock Holmes is a character that has been featured in more films than any other character in literature, and has caught the attention of readers (and later audiences) from all over the world.

Doyle’s story of the famous detective takes place between 1881 and 1904, when Sherlock Holmes lived at 221B Baker Street with his friend and colleague Dr. Watson.

The museum itself is a historic Georgian townhouse constructed in 1815, and was once used as a boarding house between 1860 and 1936. The museum’s interior has been designed to look exactly how it was described in Doyle’s stories (and although the building is technically located between numbers 237 and 241, the museum displays a 221B address sign, just for argument's sake).

The Sherlock Holmes museum is run by the Sherlock Holmes International Society, and has been visited by more than 2 million Sherlock Holmes fans since it first opened in 1990.

Sherlock Holmes Museum Highlights

As soon as you enter the museum through the gift shop, Mrs. Hudson (Sherlock Holmes’ housekeeper) will greet you, before guiding you through the different Victorian rooms in the building which span over four stories. The rooms include Sherlock Holmes’ living room, study and bedroom, as well as rooms for Watson and Mrs. Hudson, and even the bathroom in a small loft.

Visitors can climb up the seventeen steps (the same ones mentioned in A Scandal in Bohemia), as well as up to Holmes’ crowded parlour filled with artefacts and furniture from the Victorian era which include traditional wallpaper, gaslight lamps and much more.. The rooms are packed full of all sorts of fascinating memorabilia which were referenced in the books, such as a magnifying glass, an old copy of The Times, a pipe, a chemistry kit, ink bottles, a violin, a deerstalker, and much, much more.

Visitors can also see Dr. Mortimer’s stick and Watson’s diary with handwritten notes, both of which were mentioned in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and there’s even the club that was used to murder Colonel Barclay in The Crooked Man. There’s also lifelike waxwork figures of Sherlock Holmes, Professor Moriarty and many more.

Special Tips

Getting there, visiting sherlock holmes museum.

Recommended visiting time to the Sherlock Holmes Museum is around one to two hours.

All visitors must enter the museum through the gift shop, which is located on the ground floor. You will then purchase your tickets, and join the queue at the entrance of the museum. It is highly recommended that you arrive as early as possible (especially during the summer months), as the queues can get quite long during the busier periods.

Sherlock Holmes Museum, London: Fiction Come to Life

221B Baker Street, London — one of the most famous addresses in all of literature, an address you likely recognize immediately as the home of Sherlock Holmes and his partner in crime detection, Dr. John Watson.

What you may not know is that this famous fictional address exists in the real world: a historic London building at 221B Baker Street actually houses the Sherlock Holmes Museum and the Sherlock Holmes Museum shop.

London is a city rich with literary history, and you could spend weeks here exploring every literary travel sight. But I would categorize the Sherlock Holmes Museum as a must-visit sight on your trip to London.

Read on to find out what you can expect when you visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum and Shop in London, including who would enjoy it, what you’ll see there, how to get tickets, and how to get there.

I’ll also give you some background information about Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so you can be prepared to make the most out of your visit to this fun literary sight in London.

Sherlock Holmes: A very brief history and some facts that might surprise you

Whether or not you’ve read a single Sherlock Holmes story, the name can’t be unfamiliar to many in the English-speaking world. Sherlock is often called the first detective in fiction; even if others predate him, Sherlock is certainly the most famous.

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published stories featuring the crime-solving duo, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, from 1887 until 1927. The official Sherlock Holmes canon consists of four novels and five short story collections, stories originally published individually in serials.

Sherlock was not quite an instant success when Conan Doyle first published A Study in Scarlet in 1887, but it gained a wide audience within just a few years. Once the British public got a hold of Sherlock, they just couldn’t get enough! There was a serious case of Sherlock fever starting in the 1890s, enough to rival the Sherlock fever that followed the Benedict Cumberbatch BBC adaptation several years ago.

You may be surprised to know, however, that the author tired of his famous detective much sooner than did his audience. Sherlock’s famous death at the end of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, “The Final Problem” (published 1894) was meant as Conan Doyle’s way of ending his detective writing to focus on more “serious subjects.” It was not initially meant as a set-up for a famous comeback, though of course, it did later become that.

There was such public outcry and demand for more detective tales that Conan Doyle agreed to write another Sherlock mystery, arguably his most famous, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901), which takes place chronologically before his death in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes .

The public appetite for Sherlock was still not sated, and Conan Doyle resurrected the character with The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1905), in which we learn that Sherlock’s death was staged (how’s that for rewriting history?), and Conan Doyle blessed his audiences with many more stories about Sherlock Holmes.

A little chronologically confused? I don’t blame you. I am no Holmes expert, but I think this is a good guide if you’re wondering in what order you should read the Sherlock Holmes books.

One last fun factoid before we get into the nitty-gritty of the Sherlock Holmes Museum: Conan Doyle was actually more like Dr. John Watson than Sherlock. Like Dr. Watson, Conan Doyle was a trained doctor who split his time between practicing medicine and writing. We see that he also had a similarly on-again-off-again relationship with Sherlock; the good Dr. Watson, you may remember, several times moves on with life only to be drawn back into Sherlock’s magnetic field.

Who would enjoy the Sherlock Holmes Museum?

The website and informational materials given at the Sherlock Museum make it very clear that all are welcome, from the superfan to the person who’s never seen or read anything about Sherlock Holmes before.

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum

From my personal experience here, I’d say that anyone with a foundational interest in Sherlock Holmes will find something to enjoy at London’s Sherlock Holmes Museum. Of course, the superfans will get the most out of the experience, but even casual fans will likely be inspired to deepen their knowledge of Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

When I was visiting, there was a dad and his preteen daughter also visiting, and it was adorable seeing them share an obvious interest in the site. I’d say the Sherlock Holmes museum is fully appropriate for kids but will be most enjoyable to kids who are at least familiar with some of the detective tales.

At the Sherlock Holmes Museum shop, you’ll find lots of kid-appropriate Sherlock retellings for purchase.

Visiting the Sherlock Holmes Museum: What to Expect

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum

The Georgian building that houses London’s Sherlock Holmes Museum dates back to 1815. The museum first opened in 1990, converted from an old lodging house to recreate the apartment as Holmes would have known it when he resided there from 1881 to 1904, according to the canon.

Upon arriving at the museum, you’ll join an outdoor, uncovered queue (so bring an umbrella if it’s a typically rainy London day!). There are two separate queues: one for advance ticket reservations and one for walk-ups. The costumed bobby outside can direct you to the proper queue.

Once you enter the Sherlock Holmes Museum, you can take your time visiting the three floors of exhibits. You can take your time, but the average visit time is between 35-45 minutes.

The first half of the experience is a guided tour of the main floor, including the sitting room and Sherlock’s bedroom. (Don’t forget to count the steps as you enter, lest Sherlock be disappointed in your observational powers!).

This fun guided tour portion is short and sweet, directed by a costumed maid who will take you into the real (fictional) world of Sherlock and Dr. Watson, such that you’ll forget they never really lived in these very rooms (or at all, for that matter).

She regales with delightful stories about Sherlock’s peculiar tobacco smoking preferences and his other quirky habits. She will also point out where Sherlock shot the letters VR (for Victoria Regina, aka Queen Victoria) into the wall with his pistol in a fit of boredom (much to Mrs. Hudson’s dismay).

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum

After this brief guided portion has ended, you will be free to look at these two rooms on your own, though keep in mind another tour group will be coming through shortly! While looking around, make sure you check near the chair under the window to see Sherlock’s famous violin.

Once you’ve finished the main floor of the Sherlock Holmes Museum, you can move to the upper two floors at your leisure. On the next floor, you’ll find Dr. Watson’s bedroom, laid out as though he just stepped outside for a moment.

You’ll also find Mrs. Hudson’s room, which you can explore independently. In this room, you will find many small objects of significance in various Sherlock stories. Of course, these will be best understood by those familiar with the stories, but well-placed signs can enlighten even those who are less familiar with the mysteries.

Keep an eye out for the revolver hidden inside a Bible, from the story “The Solitary Cyclist” and the bust of Napoleon that was smashed by Holmes in “The Six Napoleons.”

On the top and final floor of the Sherlock Holmes Museum, you’ll see more “artifacts” as well as several life-sized dioramas of some of the most famous scenes from the Sherlock mysteries. You definitely can’t avoid the creepy statue of the infamous Professor Moriarty.

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum professor moriarty

After taking your time through these three floors of the museum, you will make your way next door to the Sherlock Holmes Museum Shop . Here, you will find a good variety of books and memorabilia to appeal to any Sherlock fan. You can even buy a Holmes-style deerstalker hat, though as the housemaid points out, Holmes would never have worn that hat outside of a hunting expedition.

As is my tradition, I purchased a copy of the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes from the site, though I was disappointed they didn’t have a stamp or engraving with which to mark the book, as many literary gift shops do.

How to get to the Sherlock Holmes Museum

The Sherlock Holmes Museum is centrally located in Marylebone and is easily accessed by public transportation.

The museum is about a 2-minute walk from the Baker Street tube station, accessible by the Bakerloo, Circle, Jubilee, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City lines.

Sherlock Holmes Museum and shop London literary sites literary travel sir arthur conan doyle how to get to the sherlock holmes museum statue baker street 221b tube station

As you exit the station, make sure you find the larger-than-life Sherlock Holmes statue out front!

There are also several bus routes that will take you nearby; use Google Maps for the most current recommendations.

How to get tickets for the Sherlock Holmes Museum

You have two options for getting Sherlock Holmes Museum tickets: pre-purchase online , or buy a walk-up ticket.

If you purchase your ticket online in advance, your ticket will be specific to one date and time. On the day of, you must arrive 10 minutes prior to your reserved time, or you will lose your ticket. Also, by booking online you will pay a small convenience fee.

If you wish to purchase a walk-up ticket for the Sherlock Holmes Museum, bear in mind that ticket holders with a reserved time will get first preference, so you may end up waiting between 10-60 minutes to get inside. To get a walk-up ticket, go first into the museum shop and purchase at the register before joining the appropriate queue out front. The bobbies are happy to direct you to the appropriate place if needed.

As for me, I elected for a walk-up ticket but arrived shortly after the museum’s opening. I ended up waiting about 15 minutes outside and spent the time reading a Sherlock story on my phone; a very pleasant (and appropriate) way to pass the time.

Other London Sites for Sherlock Fans

If you are a diehard Sherlock fan, you may be wondering what other Sherlock-related sites London has to offer. Here are a few more to check out:

  • Sherlock Holmes statue , as mentioned previously, just outside the Baker Street station
  • Sherlock Holmes Pub , a Victorian-style pub themed around Sherlock Holmes, also features some Holmes memorabilia upstairs
  • The Criterion restaurant , the place where Holmes first meets Watson in A Study in Scarlet
  • Enjoy a Sherlock Holmes afternoon tea , one of the most unique afternoon teas in London

Finding Accommodations in London

London is an expensive city to visit, there’s no getting around it. If you’re looking for affordable accommodations, you’ll be looking at either staying in a hostel or in a small, compact hotel room. Otherwise, stay on the outskirts of the city near a tube station for easy access to the city. I’ve found some of the most affordable hotels around King’s Cross Station or north of Hyde Park in the Kensington neighborhood.

As you look for somewhere to stay, I recommend checking for lodging on Hotels.com . I almost always book my accommodations through Hotels.com , because you can earn rewards for every night you stay without having to choose only one hotel chain to be loyal to. You can even book locally owned apart hotels and bed and breakfasts.

If you’re looking for privately owned vacation rentals, I recommend checking VRBO. I’ve personally had much better experiences with their owners and rentals than I have with their primary competitor.

Travel Resources At-A-Glance

All of the following are links to sites and services I actually use to book and plan my travel or to purchase books or travel gear.

For flights : Skyscanner is my number one go-to resource for booking flights. I love using the “explore” function to find the cheapest places I can fly during a given time or using the fare calendar to identify the cheapest days to fly.

For hotels and lodgings : For hotels, hotels.com , and for vacation rentals, VRBO.com . I’ve had much better experiences with private rentals through this website than through other popular private vacation rental websites.

For car rentals : Kayak allows comparisons across a wide range of booking agencies and lists reviews of companies as well. I’ve found this to be the most user-friendly and efficient way to compare car rental prices.

For tours & excursions : Viator and Get Your Guide are my top choices for booking excursions and tour experiences in a new destination.

For travel gear : Amazon.com and REI for more outdoorsy items. Check out my travel gear recs here.

For booking trains & buses : I find the Omio app and website to be the most easily navigable for comparing options for public transportation, especially in Europe,

Best travel credit card : My favorite travel rewards credit card for European travel has been the Chase Sapphire Rewards card . Visa is accepted just about everywhere in Europe, and there are no foreign transaction fees on the card. Some of the travel benefits I love on the Chase Sapphire include free TSA pre-check or Global Entry (worth it every time), an annual $200 travel credit, an annual $200 hotel benefit, built-in rental car, and trip insurance, and points are worth 50% more when used to book travel. I travel around Europe a LOT, and I end up with many free flights and hotel stays from using my points on my Chase Sapphire.

For books : Bookshop.org often has prices as good as Amazon or sometimes better, but profits go to indie bookstores all over the country. Whenever possible, consider buying your books from this online indie bookshop resource.

Well, I hope this post answered all your questions about visiting the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker Street in London.

OVERVIEW OF SHERLOCK HOLMES SIGHTS IN LONDON

When Sherlock Holmes came into existence in 1887, few could have predicted the longevity and success in store for the character who would become the world’s most famous detective.

Films, TV series, stories, and comic books – Sherlock is known and loved the world over.

And recently, our capital city was playing a pivotal role in the BBC’s modern re-telling of Holmes and Watson: Sherlock .

Sherlock fans from across the globe who visit London find themselves on the trail of Sherlock and John (played by the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman), hoping to visit the locations that are featured so heavily in the television series.

For those of you hoping to take a journey to Baker Street, spot the rooftop where Holmes and Moriarty played out their final meeting, or drop by Irene Adler’s house – this post is for you!

Read on to find the real-life locations used for the filming of BBC’s Sherlock .

GUIDED SHERLOCK HOLMES TOURS

This section will include some of the best guided tours that cover the topic of Sherlock Holmes.

We provide details about pricing, availability, and what you can expect to see on each tour.

Sherlock Holmes Film Location Tour

This 2-hour walking tour will take you to some of the most notable filming locations from both the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies and the BBC Sherlock television series.

While on this outing, you’ll also see sites related to the books and learn about the author who created this character, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Tickets start at about £12 for adults and £10 for children.

Purchase tickets or learn more .

Jack the Ripper & Sherlock Holmes Bus Tour

As the name implies, this 3-hour bus tour covers both the story of Jack the Ripper and Sherlock Holmes.

This night bus tour will visit several historic sites related to London’s most notorious crimes and mysteries.

At the end, you’ll stop by the Sherlock Holmes Pub where you can get some interesting memorabilia or perhaps even just order a drink.

Tickets are £32 for adults and £28 for students/seniors.

Private Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour

Over the course of 3 hours, a private tour guide will reveal some of the most famous sites from the tales of Sherlock Holmes.

Visit locations such as 221B Baker Street, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and filming locations from the BBC television series Sherlock.

This service includes hotel pick-up and drop-off.

Tickets are a bit more expensive at £134 for adults and £51 for children, but with a private tour guide showing you around, you’ll get more personal attention than on similar outings offered by their competitors.

Black Cab Sherlock Holmes Tour

Enjoy a special 3-hour tour of London covering several notable Sherlock Holmes sites while riding in a black cab from one location to the next.

In addition to visiting places like 221B Baker Street, you’ll also see where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived and discover filming locations from the BBC Sherlock series as well as the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies.

Although this is the most expensive Sherlock Holmes tour on our list, it’s also one of the most extensive, as it includes transportation in an iconic black cab and personal attention from a private tour guide.

Tickets are £310 per person.

SHERLOCK HOLMES LOCATIONS IN LONDON

Below is our self-guided tour of Sherlock Holmes sights in London. Click on the map and it will open in an interactive mode.

If you are planning on using one of the hop-on-hop-off buses , many of the stops will bring you nearby many of the spots listed below or you could use our beginner's guide to the London Underground .

Don't forget to check out our selection of free London walking tours .

(A) 221 B Baker Street

187 North Gower Street ( map )

One of the most famous addresses in the world, 221B Baker Street does actually exist. However, owing to traffic congestion, it is not on Baker Street where scenes for Sherlock are filmed.

In fact, 221B Baker Street is actually 187 North Gower Street – a small side road just off the Euston Road in northern London.

Sherlock devotees will know that Speedy’s Cafe lies underneath the flats where Holmes, Watson, and Mrs. Hudson live.

But not everybody knows that Speedy’s Cafe is, indeed, a real cafe here in London!

The gents who run Speedy’s are taking their new-found fame quite well and enjoy serving up coffee and snacks to Sherlock buffs who pop in for a bite to eat whilst super-sleuthing their way around London.

As the interior of Speedy’s was actually used for filming in Series Two, it’s possible to sit down and take a meal where Holmes and Watson themselves sat in A Scandal in Belgravia .

(B) Russell Square Gardens

Russell Square, Bloomsbury, London ( m ap )

This picturesque little patch of green in Bloomsbury was featured in the very first episode of Sherlock .

It is here that Watson has a coffee with his friend Mike Stanford and hears the name ‘Sherlock Holmes’ for the first time.

The bench they sat on during filming was actually a prop, however, so it’s not possible to sit in the exact place that Watson did – but there are many other benches one can relax on within the square!

(C) Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

145 Fleet Street

Sir Conan Doyle drank here and a scene in 'Case of the Red-Headed League' is believed to have been set in this pub.

We stop at this pub on our Old City of London Tour .

(D) The Old Bailey

London Old Bailey

Intersection of Old Bailey and Bishop's Gate ( map )

This building is the famed Central Criminal Court of England and Wales

The exterior shots were filmed here for Moriarty’s trial in The Reichenbach Fall .

It's open to the public so stop on in and see who is on trial!

It is also just a few streets away from St. Paul's Cathedral .

(E) St. Bart’s Hospital

West Smithfield ( map )

The oldest surviving hospital in England, St. Bartholomew’s is where Holmes and Watson first meet one another in Sherlock (as well as in the original story).

It is also here that Sherlock and Moriarty met in the climax of The Reichenbach Fall and from the roof where Holmes leaps to the ground in the last few moments of series two.

This 31-year-old pathology lab assistant Molly Hooper works and assists Holmes and Watson in the solving of their cases at St. Bart’s as well.

A stop at St. Bart's Hospital is included in our Dark Side of London Ghost Tour .

(F) Tower 42

25 Old Broad Street ( map )

Tower 42 serves as Shad Shanderson, the financial institution used in The Blind Banker episode of series 1 as well as making another appearance in the last episode of Series 3.

When it was built (1971-1980), Tower 42 was the tallest building in the United Kingdom.

Now it is only the 6 th tallest, but it has the unique distinction of being used for both interior and exterior shots in Sherlock .

It is possible to visit Tower 42 as there is a champagne bar on the top floor with amazing views over the capital! Make reservations the bar  here .

On our  Old City of London Tour , we point out Tower 42.

(G) The Tower of London

Exterior shots of the Tower were used for The Reichenbach Fall . We point it out to you on our Old City of London Tour .

No filming took place inside the Tower of London. Those scenes were filmed at Cardiff Castle in Wales.

(H) OXO Tower

Barge House Street ( map )

Where the body of the security guard is found on the banks of the Thames in  The Great Game . To get to this site, the tide must be low!

Our London Night Tour includes this location.

(I) Waterloo Bridge

It is underneath this Bridge that Sherlock and John seek information from the homeless network in London in  The Great Game .

(J) South Bank Skate Park

South Bank of the River Thames

Where Holmes and Watson uncover a cryptic clue in  The Blind Banker.  Our London Night Tour includes this location.

(K) Battersea Power Station

188 Kirtling Street ( map )

The largest brick structure in all of Europe, Battersea Power Station features twice in A Scandal in Belgravia .

Firstly, when Sherlock and John are brought to an abandoned car and shown a body in the boot and secondly when John and Irene meet in the massive marble turbine hall.

Battersea Power Station copy

The station is a well-known sight on the London skyline and is currently undergoing regeneration works that will turn the entire complex into a series of flats, shops, restaurants, and offices.

Fun Facts: Pink Floyd fans may recognize this power station from the front cover of the album Animals .

Battersea is also seen in a shot from The Beatles movie  Help!

If you are a Beatles Fan, see our post about Abbey Road .

(L) Boscobel Place

Belgravia

A single shot was filmed here for A Scandal in Belgravia .

It is the scene where Watson agrees to punch Holmes in the face so Sherlock can attempt to gain access into Irene’s house around the corner.

(M) Irene Adler’s Home

Eaton Square ( map )

Eaton Square is home to some of the most expensive property in the United Kingdom. In fact, house prices here average around £4,600.00 per square foot!

Although the square is a residential area, it is surrounded by embassies and businesses.

Exterior shots of Irene’s home specifically show number 44 Eaton Square – noticeable because of the blue plaque on the frontage of the building, commemorating Prince Metternich of Austria.

Interior shots of Irene’s property were actually filmed in Wales.

In addition to being featured in A Scandal in Belgravia , the property was also used for interior shots in A Study in Pink (as well as being used as a location in Dr. Who!).

(N) Buckingham Palace (Goldsmith’s Hall)

Foster Lane ( map )

For the exterior shots in  A Scandal in Belgravia episode were filmed at the real Buckingham Palace.

All interior shots, however,  of the ‘Palace’ (such as the scene when Holmes and Watson get details on their case) were filmed at Goldsmith’s Hall.

Goldsmith's Hall Sherlock Holmes

The Hall is home to the Goldsmiths’ Company, one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London.

Since 1300, the Goldsmiths’ Company has been responsible for the testing of the quality of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium – so you can imagine how sumptuous their Hall is!

Visitors can take a virtual tour of the premises by clicking  here .

You can take a real tour as Goldsmith's Hall offers guided tours periodically. See their website for information.

If you are interested in seeing the exterior of Buckingham Palace, you can join us for our  Westminster Walking Tour .

To see the inside of the Palace, read our post on  Buckingham Palace Tours .

(O) New Scotland Yard

10 Broadway

Home of the London Metropolitan Police. Used for exterior shots only.

The Metropolitan Police Forces’ database is known as the ‘Home Office Large Major Enquiry System’ or...HOLMES!

(P) The Diogenes Club

The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace

Exterior shots filmed here for The Reichenbach Fall . Our Westminster Tour passes by the British Academy!

If you would like to have the building pointed out to you, please speak to your guide who will be happy to oblige!

(Q) Sherlock Holmes Pub

10 Northumberland Street, Charing Cross

This pub's name gives it away! Inside they have a recreation of Sherlock and Watson's sitting room as well as some personal items of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

(R) Criterion Hotel (Savini Restaurant)

224 Piccadilly

In the very first book, this is where Holmes and Watson first meet. The hotel no longer exists but the building does.

It is a restaurant named Savini at the Criterion and you can still see the original Marquee dating back to 1874.

Look for the plaque that commemorates the meeting that started it all.

This location is right by the start point of our Soho, Piccadilly, and Chinatown tour  as well as our  Rock n Roll Tour .

(S) Piccadilly Circus

This famed London location is used in the opening credits of every episode and is also featured in The Great Game when a victim of Moriarty is standing in the Circus, hoping to be saved by Sherlock.

Why not come along on one of our Soho, Piccadilly, and Chinatown tour  where you can learn about these neighborhoods.

(T) Chinatown

In episode 2 of the first season, the Blind Banker,  Watson, and Holmes are seen walking through the streets of Chinatown .

(U) Shaftesbury Avenue

This is where Holmes and Watson literally walk into each other by the bus stop just outside buildings 19-23, before they head into Chinatown in The Blind Banker .

(V) Brindisa Tapas Kitchens - Soho

46 Broadwick Street

This lovely little Spanish restaurant is where John and Sherlock sit and wait for the taxi in the very first episode of Sherlock , A Study in Pink .

Once they spot the taxi there is a mad chase through Soho and the exterior of this restaurant was featured in those scenes as well.

TIP: This restaurant is close to the last location on our  Soho, Piccadilly, and Chinatown tour  so why not go in and enjoy some tapas after the tour?

(W) 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens

Bayswater, London

Built in the 1860s, 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens are the frontages of two houses that do not actually exist!

When the railway line connecting Paddington and Bayswater Stations was constructed, these two house fronts were erected to block the view of the rail line that could be seen from the street.

London Leinster GArdens fake houses

The doors and windows of 23 and 24 are false, and if one looks carefully you can spot that there is no letterbox on either property.

The frontages themselves are about 5 feet thick with a ‘tiny booth-like room’ located inside.

As you can imagine, 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens also serves as one of the most common addresses used in pizza delivery pranks!

The address features heavily in His Last Vow, the final episode of Sherlocks’ series 3.

Mary Watson’s face is projected onto the front of the building in one shot, and Sherlock himself actually delivers an explanation about the history of the buildings in another.

As to whether the interior scenes were actually shot here, it seems highly unlikely.

SHERLOCK HOLMES MUSEUM

Located at 221B Baker Street, this museum is dedicated to the history of Sherlock Holmes and his author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Visitors can expect to see exactly what they would expect based on the description from the books, as the museum has taken great effort to re-create the home of this famous detective.

There are also several items from throughout the history of the character that fans can either learn more about or see in person for the first time.

Tickets are £15 for adults and £10 for kids. Purchase tickets or learn more .

In addition to any savings offered upfront, this site also often provides coupon codes on local activities that make them even more affordable!

TIP : Even if you don’t feel like spending any additional money at the museum, make sure to grab a free business card on the way out – it’s designed to look like it came from Sherlock Holmes himself!
