'A damaging blow to our city': Council Leader's statement on further bus cuts

First bus picks up passengers in Sheffield

Travel South Yorkshire today announced that First Group South Yorkshire will no longer provide a number of bus services across the county because they are no longer profitable enough to run.

As a result, several routes are now under threat and there are significant timetable changes across the city and the region.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is working hard to retain as many of the bus services as possible, which will need to be supported through additional funding.

In response to the news, Cllr Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Once again the people of Sheffield and the surrounding region have been hung out to dry by Government, allowing private transport providers to reap the benefits whilst the public pick up the costs when the services are not profitable.

"When we’re working hard to implement important sustainability schemes such as Active Travel and the Clean Air Zone, cuts to public transport such as this undermine our intentions and the wider environmental and connectivity plans we're striving towards.

“The latest bus cuts deliver yet another damaging blow to our city, our economy and most importantly our residents. Buses are a crucial element to transport in Sheffield, helping people get to school, go to work, to reach our hospitals, make their important appointments, see their family members and much more. As we work towards our goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2030, it is more important than ever that there are sustainable and greener public transport choices to tackle climate change and improve air quality. This crucial work is hindered by yet more service cuts.

“As a Council we have no direct control over the bus services within our city but I wish to assure every resident that we are doing all we can to urge the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to limit the effects this could have. The Authority has already been forced to step in and offer additional public funding this year, when school bus services were under threat just before students returned to school. And once again it is faced with another momentous challenge – keeping our county moving without appropriate support from Government. We welcome the actions of the Authority for stepping in and we will continue to discuss how to progress this matter, lobby for better bus services, and ensure the best value for money.

“I hope at some stage we reach a point where we as leaders across South Yorkshire are not expressing regret and calling for more support from the Government but instead able to confidently provide the services the people in our region deserve.”

See the Travel South Yorkshire website for the latest information about local bus services and updated timetables.
