More to Srisailam than its Temples

Srisailam-temple

The famous pilgrim town of Srisailam is known for its sacred temples and significant religious sites. But its beauty is not restricted to its places of worship. The geographical location of Srisailam is a charm in itself. Sitting on the banks of the Krishna River and flanked by the forests of Srisailam Hills, there’s plenty of nature to explore and discover in this town. With an enchanting landscape of forests, hills, waterfalls, and caves, Srisailam surely makes for a holistic nature retreat, which you cannot miss.

Weekend Getaway from Hyderabad to Srisailam

The town of Srisailam is well-connected to major cities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by road and railways. It is a great weekend getaway from Hyderabad or Vijaywada. If you are flying in from other cities, you can book a reliable Hyderabad to Srisailam cab with an experienced driver and reach Srisailam in less than five hours. It is also within driving distance from Vijaywada.

The Wonders of Srisailam

Beyond the temples and revered places of worship, explore the rich natural reserves of Srisailam and experience the pilgrim town in a completely different light.

The Akka Mahadevi Caves

Akka-Mahadevi-Caves

Located at about 180 KM from Srisailam town, these naturally formed caves are a delightful sight. The Shiva shrine in the caves endows them with religious importance. However, they also have geographical and historical significance. The caves are said to be dedicated to the 12th century Kannada poet Akka Mahadevi, who took refuge there to pray and perform penance.

However, archeological findings suggest that the cave complex has been around for over millions of years, and most parts remain untouched by humans. However, the journey to the caves is a major highlight of the site. It is also a popular destination for regular hikers and explorers.

To reach the base of the Akka Mahadevi Caves, you can take a boat from Patala Ganga and sail upstream on the Krishna River. It takes two to three hours to hike to the caves and explore the ruins. As you walk through the rocky terrain and forested trails, you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Nallamala Hills in the distance. You can also visit the temple enshrined in one of the caves.

There is also a prominent arch worth seeing at the caves. Measuring 200 feet in length and 16 feet in height, the stone arch features naturally formed grooves that are reminiscent of hand-carved sculptures. Photography enthusiasts should not miss this spot.

Visiting hours: 24 hours

Best time to visit: 10 AM to 3 PM

Boat rides: 10.30 PM to sunset (check with local operators for the last ferry from Akka Mahadevi)

Good for: Day trips from Srisailam, boat rides, hiking

It is considered to be the largest tiger reserve in the country and currently forms a part of Project Tiger to protect the endangered species.

The natural reserve boasts of rich flora and fauna, including tropical dry deciduous trees and medicinal plants like axlewood, teak, silk plants, Anjan, Sal, and frankincense. The dense forests also house a large population of wildlife, ranging across all species and classes. You can take a jungle safari through the designated areas and spot Indian leopards, sloth bears, pangolin, spotted deer, antelopes, peafowl, skunks, and more. And if you are lucky enough, you might also get a sighting of the Bengal Tiger, which has decreased in number over the years. The forests of Srisailam are also known for the famous blackbuck, which is now relegated to highly protected zones.

Visiting hours: 7 AM to 5 PM

Best time to visit: November to March

Nallamala Forests

Nallamalla-Forests-near-Srisailam

The lush and dense Nallamala forests lie at a short distance of 17 KM from Srisailam, in the quiet district of Kurnool. They are a part of the Nallamala Hills and cover almost one-third of the hilly areas. The forests are popular for ecotourism and offer a lot of outdoor adventures for travelers.

There are designated camping areas, log cabins, and cottages in different parts of the forests. You can do jungle camping, safaris, and enjoy the rustic retreat. Enjoy the pure indulgence of nature with an ambiance of bamboo and sandalwood trees, exotic birds, and rich flora and fauna.

The forest perimeters are inhabited by ethnic tribal communities who live across 20 odd villages in and around the jungles. You can also do a tour of the tribal villages with the help of a local guide. Enjoy a day trip from Srisailam and stop by the Dindi Reservoir on the way. The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

Srisailam RopeWay

srisailamtaxi

Srisailam ropeway, one of the best in the country, is an essential part of any Srisailam tour.

Srisailam is a holy town on the banks of the Krishna River.  Patalganga  is the name given to the Krishna River that flows near the hills where the  Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy  Temple is located. The image of majestic hills with a vast spread of water creates a tranquil scenic beauty that will make your tour unforgettable.

Srisailam RopeWay

The tourism department in Srisailam has provided a ropeway for tourists to reach the  Patalganga from the top of the hills. It operates from the ropeway center, which is located in  the tourism department’s Haritha Hotel.Traveling by rope way not only makes it easier to reach the river, which would otherwise require a strenuous walk, but  it also adds a bit of  excitement  and adventure to your trip.

Tourists come to Patalganga to take a bath in the holy water and wash away their sins. The  waterbody is accessible through the use of steps.

There are iron chains built for devotees to hold and take a dip in, allowing them to stay steady against the current of water.

There are ropeway cabins that can accommodate four people and will take tourists down to the river.  Due to the increased number of tourists during festivals and holidays, one may have to wait in  line for their ride on the Srisailam ropeway.

There is a waiting luge where tourists can wait for their turn in comfort. Although the ride is only five minutes long, the view of Srisailam from the ropeway will captivate you for the duration of your journey.

The view of the Nallamala Hills, Krishna River, and surrounding areas is beautiful.

Ropeway rides are frequently combined with boating on the Patalganga, which is a worthwhile  activity.

Many tourists also visit the Akka Mahadevi caves, which can only be reached by boat.  The Akkamahadevi caves are another popular tourist attraction in  Srisailam  that is worth a visit  if you are looking for adventure and untouched nature.

Many devotees visit these caves as well.

Srisailam Ropeway Timings

The ropeway runs from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Srisailam.

Srisailam Ropeway Cost / Charges

The Srisailam ropeway fare is Rs.50 (both ways) for adults and Rs.35 (both ways) for children.

Tourists can purchase boat tickets at the ropeway ticket counters.

They can choose from a variety of boating packages, including a boat ride only on the  Patalganga, a boat trip to the Akkamahadevi caves, and so on.

Reaching Ropeway Center in Srisailam

The ropeway centre is located near the Srisailam Haritha Hotel. The hotel is in close proximity to the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple.

As a result, getting here is not a difficult task. To get to the hotel, tourists can take a locally run  auto rickshaw or a private taxi.

Srisailam and Akkamahadevi Caves Trip

  • Post last modified: UPDATED ON: April 5, 2020

Reaching Srisailam:

I got an opportunity to visit Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh during two months stay at Hyderabad in 2010. It is about 230 kms from Hyderabad and two days weekend break was well enough to visit this place. I have already booked bus ticket from Hyderabad to Sri Sailam by a state bus on Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation website. As usual I was again alone for the trip. But at the last moment two of my friends agreed to join me for the trip. We were three now, but they did not have the tickets. We reached the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stand in Hyderabad at 9 PM. I requested the bus conductor to arrange two tickets for my friends also. The conductor was a kind-hearted man and allowed all three to sit in the bus. Later, he arranged two tickets for us on that crowded night. We started from Hyderabad at 10 PM and reached Sri Sailam in early morning at 4.30 AM. Nothing special was happened in the night. It was an uneventful quiet journey.

Srisailam and Around:

Srisailam is a holy town situated in Nallamala hills (means Black Hills) of Kurnool district. Srisailam is one among the various Jyotirlingas of India.A multipurpose dam has been built across River Krishna and caters to the irrigation and power needs of the state.

Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple

At that morning, town was just waking and very few people were there around. We booked a room in a lodge for two hours just to be got ready for temple visit.

We reached temple around 6 AM and there was already a long queue of devotees waiting for their turns. We enquired at one of the facilitation counter there and they said after getting the tickets of Rs.50, we can get a priority over other normal devotees. What a system is there in the temples of South India? Even god is on sale there. We took three tickets of Rs. 50 each and bypassed the long queue to enter in the temple alongwith 20-30 other people.

The temple complex, whose existing buildings date from the 2nd century AD, is the Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy Temple. It is one of the 12 ‘Jyotirlingas’ in India as well as one of the eighteen most sacred goddess shrines, or Shakti Pithas. The temple is the site of Mahakali in the form of Bhramaramba. It is believed, the Vrishabha, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva performed penance here. Lord Shiva appeared before him, with his consort Parvati in the forms of Mallikarjuna and Bharamaramba. The view inside the temple is fascinating.Photography inside the temple is strictly prohibited. So we couldn’t take photos inside the temple and came outside.

We passed through a long queue of Sadhus sitting on the road in a row to get morning breakfast offered by devotees. There were lot of people selling these breakfast item to the visitors, so that they can offer these to the Sadhus. I was just amazed as it was only about 6.45 AM and these people are eating so much of food. It seemed a lunch time rather than a breakfast time.

We reached the main market and roamed around. The market was still opening. We went to a road side dhaba and took our breakfast. After breakfast we decided to visit a nearby ghat on Krishna River.

Patal Ganga:

We went to the riverside and there is a ropeway offering a ride to the Patal Ganga, where the bathing ghats on the banks of the river are. We took ropeway ride in Rs. 40 per head both ways. The ghat at river was full of devotees. People were taking bath and performing religious rituals there. There were some boats offering a half an hour boat ride to a dam. We took a ride and went upto the dam and came back. It was enchanting to sit in a wooden boat, with water on all sides, framed by the hills.

Akkamahadevi Caves:

There we have heard about Akkamahadevi Caves, which is around 18 kms away and accessible by boats only. We registered for Akkamahadevi caves boat trip around 10 AM. The charge was Rs. 160 per person for the round trip. The boat trip was scheduled to start at 10:30 AM . There is only 1 boat that goes to this place daily and the requirement is minimum of 18 people have to register!  Though you can also engage a private boat there. The trip to Akkamahadevi caves started off a bit late at around 11:30 AM and it took about 1 hour 15 minutes to reach the place.

The boat trip in that hot weather was not a very good idea but the riverside views gave us courage to hang on the trip. A guide accompanied us through the entire trip. The entire trip is covered by forest area and mountains. We did not miss a chance to enjoy the nature and captured every moment. The caves are quite good – depending on your liking for such places – its absolutely dark inside and we bought a couple of candles over there to go in. Its around 80 meter walk inside the caves and after few meters it was really suffocating. But we managed to offered our prayer at Shiva Lingam there and came back to our boat.

The boat was supposed to be there for an hour.It took another 75 minutess to return back in the scalding heat. Though the boat was covered, the heat was quite exhausting – all in all, in my personal opinion, I did not feel that the effort was worth to visit the cave – so be sure if you want to visit this place.

Return Journey to Hyderabad:

We went to the bus stand at Sri Sailam to catch a return bus to Hyderabad. We got the 3 PM bus to Hyderabad.

On the way, we have passed through the famous Sakshi Ganapati Temple. There is a story about this temple. Shiva told that whoever visits Srisailam will reach Kailash after the end of this birth. Ganesha told Him “You are an asutoshi and hence people will tell you that they have visited Srisailam without visiting and hence I will reside there as Sakshi Ganapati. Whoever visits Srisailam, after the dharshan, should visit me also, so that I will note down”.Hence the Srisailam visit is complete only after having a darshan of Sakshi Ganapati.(Unfortunately we didn’t know this important piece of information beforehand and we didn’t visit – we didn’t have time as well). Hope Ganeshji was able to see us in the bus and recorded our journey to Srisailam.

We have a splendid view of the Srisailam Dam during return journey that we missed last night. The beautiful dam is located in a gorge between two mountains and crossing over the dam is not allowed. You have to descend from the first mountain pass through a narrow bridge to start the ascend of the second mountain. The bridge runs parallel to the dam and at least a couple of kilometers away.

The return journey gave us a pleasant surprise that we missed our onward journey in the night. Srisailam route criss-crosses rustic villages and Nallamala forests which houses Nagarjuna Sagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Nallamala forest is the hotbed of Naxal movement and the forest covers are profuse hide outs of naxalites. These are full of Ghats, Jungles and some very beautiful and scenic locations. The bus passed through a dense forest and by the time it was dark outside, I was able to spot some cheetals, peacocks and lot of monkeys along the road.

We reached Hyderabad around 11 PM, went straight to the famous Paradise, ordered two packed Biryani and reached to the hotel. It was a wonderful one day trip to the Lord Shiva’s adobe.

Hi to all, Please tell me if it is possible to go and come back fro Srisailam in a day. I am going to have a nigh halt at Srisailam. Next day I am completely free. May be if possible I am thinking to go to Akkamahadevi Caves + KADALIVANAM and come back to Srisailam for night halt.

Please help.

Shrinivas Gramopadhye | CELL: 09822521799

Hi Shrinivas, In my opinion, it is not advisable to complete this journey in a single day. The A.P.Tourism Boat starts from Srisailam to Akkamahadevi caves at 10.30 AM, which can be delayed. It takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to reach at Akkamahadevi Caves. So, if you are able to reach the place, say by 12 PM, it will take at least 1 hour to complete the visit there. Then, Kadalivanam is at the other bank of Krishna River, opposite to Akkamahadevi Caves, where this boat does not go. You have to arrange a private boat. Once you reach on that side of the river, you have to trek for another 7 kms inside a dense forest, full of animals. It is not advisable to go alone. 7 kms trek to Kadalivanam caves and then 7 kms return trek to Krishna River and then arrange a boat to Srisailam, these all are not possible in a single day. Please note that no public boat goes to the Kadalivanam side of Krishna River. You have to arrange a private boat and getting a boat from Akkamahadevi cave to cross the river at other side is also very difficult. If you hire a private boat from Srisailam and start your trip early in the morning, then also it will be very difficult to complete this trip in a day. There is no option to stay back in the forest in the night. But, if you are visiting this place during Kartika Purnima, you may find some devotees staying there in the night. So in that case, you can stay there in the night and return back to Srisailam next day. So, if you have only one day at Srisailam, go to Mallikarjunaswamy Temple in the morning and Akkamahadevi caves by A.P. Tourism Boat during the day. Leave Kadalivanam for another day, when you have a group or you can arrange a night stay there. Keep traveling and Celebrate this life on the road. Regards.

Dear Avanish,

If possible, please tell me What are likely charges/rates for the fair directly from SRISAILAM to KADALIVANAM OR AKKAMAHADEVI CAVES to KADALIVANAM.

Really thank for the valuable information you provided to me.

Shrinivas Gramopadhye CELL: 09822521799

No Idea on this..I went there 3 years ago and that time round boat trip between Sri Sailam and Akkamahadevi caves cost us Rs.160 per person in the shared boat of A.P.Tourism. Kadalivanam is just opposite side of Akkamahadevi caves, so distance is almost the same from Srisailam (except further 7 kms trek in the forest). But 3 years ago, for Kadalivanam, you had to take a private boat only. If possible, please update me on the current situation there after your trip.

Thanks and Regards, Avanish

Hi Ajay, I only went to Akkamahadevi Cave during my visit. So, I have no authentic information on Kadalivan and other. But, what I knew is that Kadalivan is on the opposite bank of Krishna River. First go to Akkamahadevi Cave. After visiting this cave, take your privately-hired boat to the just opposite bank of the river, i.e., known as Kadalivanam Ghat. From the Ghat, you have to hike in the forest for 7 kms to reach Kadalivan and then 30 steps down is the Kadalivan Cave. Please do not go alone in this part. This is the only information I have.

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very difficult to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance. I must say you have done a superb job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Chrome. Exceptional Blog!

The road-trip to Srisailam

If there is one road trip that will provide you with stunning panoramas of wildlife and jungle, gushing rivers, caves, and the thrill of driving through the ghats, this is it.You’ll pass through Nallamalla Forests, which will immerse you in nature — flanked by greenery on either side and infamous road bends, riders can have the time of their lives.

Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy the company of roars at the 3,586-square-kilometer Srisailam Tiger Reserve, while water lovers can visit Mallela Theertham, a waterfall within the Nallamala forest.

We started from Hyderabad at 8 AM in the morning for the two days weekend Srisailam tour. The route to Srisailam is that you have to turn left at the Gachibowli flyover to take the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway. The road from Hyderabad to Srisailam passes through Telangana’s suburbs and smaller towns before you enter the Andhra Pradesh hinterlands, as you intercept intriguing natural and tourist places along the way.

Road-trip to Srisailam

The last 80 kilometers drive is forest and ghat road that is sheer visual delight. There are several blind curves as you climb the hill to Srisailam that look quite fearsome. But for me who has the experience of traveling extensively in the high mountains of Himalayas, it is a routine kind of thing.

On your road trip to Srisailam you encounter several places of tourist interest such as the Dindi Reservoir, Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Octopus Viewpoint and the Mallela Theertham Waterfall which you can visit. You can also visit the attractions during your return journey. Once the majestic Srisailam Dam over river Krishna is in sight, you know that the temple town you are heading for is just a matter of a few minutes. You cross the river and you are in Andhra Pradesh. Now that we have reached Srisailam, let me now take you on a tour of the hilltop town.

So, over to the sites of attraction in and around Srisailam.

Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, also known as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Srisailam due to its illustrious history and religious significance. Within the temple’s arena, there are two shrines dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna and Deity Bhramaramba, who are said to be the incarnations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati respectively. It is also one of India’s twelve jyotirlinga temples.

The first historical mention of Srisailam hill can be found in the Pulumavis Nasik inscription from the first century AD. Among the renowned emperors who worshiped God Mallikarjuna Swamy and contributed to the temple’s development were the Sathavahanas, Ikshavakus, Pallavas, Vishnukundis, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Reedy Kings, Vijayanagara Emperors, and Chatrapathi Shivaji.

Prataparudra of the Kakatiya Dynasty worked hard to improve this temple and funded for its upkeep. The Reddy Kings ruled during the Golden Age of Srisailam, during which all of the dynasty’s rulers celebrated service to the temple. Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddy Dynasty built a tiered road between Srisailam and Pathala Ganga in the 14th century, while Anavema Reddy built Veera Siromandapam.

Road-trip to Srisailam

The Mukhamantapam of Swamy shrine, as well as a Gopuram on the temple’s southern side, were built by the Second Harihararaya of the Vijayanagara Empire. Sri Krishnadevaraya built the Rajagopuram on the eastern side of the temple in the 15th century, as well as Salumantapas on both sides. In the year 1667 AD, Chatrapathi Sivaji financed the construction of the Gopuram on the northern side.

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple was built in Dravidian style and the sanctum is a shell like structure that enshrines Lord Mallikarjuna. The small black linga has a hooded golden cover. The garbha griha is small and only priests are allowed inside.

Soon after reaching Srisailam, we headed for the temple for darshan. The shrine was moderately crowded, yet we had a good darshan of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati..

Srisailam Dam

With just 14 kilometers to go for  Srisailam, you come across the majestic stricture of Srisailam dam, on the boundary of Mahabubnagar District, Telangana (Left bank) and Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh (Right bank). It is one of India’s largest dams and the third-largest hydroelectric project of the country. The Srisailam Dam, located on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway, is one of the most popular attractions to visit in Srisailam. This is another famous place that must feature in your Hyderabad tour itinerary.

The dam’s construction began in 1960 and took more than 20 years to complete before it was inaugurated in 1981. The dam was constructed 300 metres above sea level in a deep gorge in the Nallamala hills. The dam measures 512 metres in length, 240.79 metres in height (885 feet), and has 12 radial crest gates. The dam has a live storage capacity of 274 TMC and provides irrigation water for around 200,000 acres of land in Kurnool and Cuddapah districts.

The Srisailam Dam is a man-made marvel that has become one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. The dam, which is surrounded by beautiful landscapes on all sides, provides stunning views during the monsoon season when all of the gates are open. The lush vegetation all around, the sound of water gushing through, and the rhythmic fall of water make it a nature lover’s delight. There are a few view points on both sides of the dam where you can capture the beautiful views of the reservoir.

Akka Mahadevi Caves

The Akka Mahadevi Caves, located about 18 kilometres from Srisailam, are naturally formed caves with a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The caves are named after Akka Mahadevi, a 12th-century Kannada poet, saint, and philosopher who came here in seclusion to perform penance and pray to Lord Shiva. The Shivlingam seen here is naturally formed and is one of the region’s most revered idols.

One of the highlights of the trip is the journey to the cave. You can take a boat at Pathala Ganga and sail upstream along the winding Krishna river to a ferry station, from where a short trek leads to the caves. The verdant scenery of the Nallamala hills, even during the boat rides and treks, is captivating to say the least, and if you enjoy hiking and nature trails, this place is a must-see! The caves themselves have been carved for over a million years, and apart from the shrine, not much has been touched here- there are no shops or eateries nearby.

Travel tips

  • Carry bottled drinking water and snacks.
  • Wear sturdy shoes since the hike can get tricky. The caves can get pretty dark. Carry a torch

Sikharam or Shikhareswaram temple

You can visit this place during your return trip  from Srisailam. Sikharam is located 8 kilometers from Srisailam Mallikarjun Temple and 12 kilometers from Srisailam Dam, is the highest point of the Srisailam Hills, standing at 2830 feet above sea level. According to the Skanda Purana, a mere glance at this Sikharam frees the human soul from the curse of rebirth.

People used to walk to Srisailam in the past, and those who were unable to reach the shrine returned by seeing this hilltop. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Srisailam and is located about 3 kilometers from the route that connects Srisailam Temple and Srisailam Dam.

The Sikhareswaram Temple is an ancient stone edifice with Garbhagriha, Antaralaya, and a 16-pillared Mukhamanda. The god here is known as Veera Sankara Swamy and is also known as Sikhareswara Swamy. In the year 1398 AD, the Reddy Kings built a flight of steps to this temple, as well as a tank at this site. This location provides a panoramic view of Srisailam’s entire temple complex, including the meandering Krishna River.

This temple is reached after a steep climb of 150 well-laid stone stairs. There is another entry on the southern side, somewhat ahead of the main entrance, with only 30 stairs.

Paladhara Panchadara

Paladhara Panchadara is a lovely picturesque place, around 4 kilometres from Srisailam. A flight of stairs leads you to an infusion of several streams. The trickling of streams, combined with the beautiful natural environment that surrounds the area, make it the ideal place to think and unwind. It also has religious significance because the name of the main stream, Paladhara Panchadara, is taken from the Hindu God Lord Shiva. The stream is thought to have been called after the one that emerges from Lord Shiva’s forehead- ‘pala’ means ‘forehead,’ and ‘dhara’ means ‘stream.’

This particular steam flows all year and meets the holy Krishna river, and while it is merely that small stop during your visit to the city, its rich history cannot be overlooked. It is believed that this is where Bhagavan Adisankara wrote and composed the Sivanandalahari, a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva that dates back to the 8th century.

It attracts devotees from everywhere with its significant history. One of the major attractions of Hathakesvara Temple is the belief that by visiting this temple and seeking blessing of the Sri Hatakeswara Swamy, a form of Lord Shiva, devotees can get rid of various diseases. Summer Special: 9 exotic places you must visit this summer holidays in 2022

Mallella Theertham Waterfal

Mallela Theertham is a charming waterfall located in the dense Nallamala forest and is situated close to Hyderabad-Srisailam highway and is a popular place to visit while travelling to Srisailam. After travelling 50 kilometres from Srisailam to Hyderabad, take a right turn into the forest at Vatwarlapally and drive for about 8 kilometres to reach the falls. The route leading up to the falls is rough, and it gets even worse during the rainy season.

Water falls directly from a high cliff on Shiv Lingas-like rock formations at a height of roughly 150 feet. The falls’ surroundings, which are flanked by dense forest, provide a one-of-a-kind experience. The water comes from a small stream that flows through the deep jungle and meets the Krishna River. To access the falls from the road, about 380 well-laid steps must be walked down. The pool below the falls is fenced on all sides. If the flow of the stream is not too strong, there is a route to the bottom of the falls where you can play in the water.

Many sages are believed to have performed penances for LOrd Shiva here. During the summer, it is said that many tigers frequent this area to drink water. Mallela Theertham is a great place to spend a weekend with friends and family. The best time to visit the falls is between October and February. During the summer, there may not be much flow of water.

Timings: 8 AM to 5 PM.
