SIMON PEGG INTERVIEW

If Simon Pegg wasn’t one of Hollywood’s most in-demand comic actors, he’d have gone down a very different route. "I always wanted to be a vet," he told TV Times. "Then I found out you had to be good at numbers and they were never my strong suit."

At least Pegg had his acting career to fall back on – and a very successful one at that, thanks to the sitcom Spaced and movie comedies like Shaun of the Dead.

"It was down to luck really," he said modestly. "We just wanted to make films that we would enjoy ourselves – and it just so happened that a lot of other people wanted to watch them, too."

One of those people was JJ Abrams, who was so impressed with Pegg’s work that he offered him a role as tech wiz Benji Dunn alongside Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible movies.

Abrams then invited him to play Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in his 2009 Star Trek reboot.

When Pegg was cast, he made sure that he didn’t just mimic the performance of original actor James Doohan. "It would have been a disservice to James to do that," said Simon.

"‘I didn’t want Scotty to be a comic character, because he also goes through some pretty serious stuff."

It’s a role that has become close to Pegg’s heart. His third movie, Star Trek Beyond, is released in cinemas in the UK this Friday, while Sky Greats becomes Sky Cinema Star Trek on Monday, showcasing the sci-fi classic as part of its 50th anniversary.

Simon has also taken on the responsibility of writing duties on the new $200million blockbuster, which sees the crew of the Enterprise marooned on an unknown planet after a surprise attack by a wave of vicious alien predators.

"Nothing I’ve ever worked on before as a writer has ever had a prior legacy like this," he said. "Being handed the keys to the Star Trek universe has been such an honour. It’s a very daunting prospect."

Despite being known for his comedies, Simon is quick to reassure Star Trek fans that the new movie won’t just be filled with gags.

"It’s not a comedy, but we wanted to make it fun because the ideology of the original series was bright and optimistic. That doesn’t stop it from having nail-biting jeopardy and genuine threat. You’re going to be on the edge of your seat, with a side of humour."

DID YOU KNOW?

Canadian-born James Doohan, who played the original Scotty, not only gave the Scottish Chief Engineer an Aberdeen accent, he also supplied all the male voices to the 1970s animated series. Doohan’s Scotty inspired many fans to pursue careers in engineering. Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, thanked him for his contribution.

The iconic catchphrase ‘Beam me up, Scotty’, was only ever used in the animated series, while in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Kirk says, ‘Scotty, beam me up.’ Since his death, aged 85 in 2005, some of Doohan’s ashes have been launched into space on three missions.

Chris Doohan currently plays his father’s character in the web series Star Trek.

Take this Which Star Trek Character Are You Quiz to find out. Answer these quick questions to get if are you Picard, Spock, Kirk, Data, or Riker.

What Is Star Trek Quiz?

Star Trek Quiz is a 30-question personality test that will match you with the most relatable character from Star Trek, based on your personality.

Star Trek Summary

Captain Jonathan Archer is a famous figure in Starfleet history, having served as Captain of the original USS Enterprise during the Federation’s early days. Archer led the first Enterprise crew on a ground-breaking mission to explore the galaxy. Archer’s crew faced a slew of new challenges and hazards, and he lacked many of the resources that succeeding Starfleet Captains had. Archer devoted most of his time to maintaining his Starship and defending his crew, even though it was a new and completely untested form of technology.

Michael Burnham is a unique figure in Star Trek because she did not have a particularly distinguished Starfleet career. As a First Officer aboard the USS Shenzhou, she was court-martialed for assaulting her Captain, Captain Georgiou, and shooting unprovoked on a Klingon warship. After being recruited onboard the USS Discovery, she was released from prison. Burnham’s early existence was equally as gloomy as her present, as she was adopted by a Vulcan parent after her parents died, their traditions regarding suppressing emotion clashing with her Human ancestry.

Which Star Trek character are you?

Captain Janeway of the USS Voyager was a clever and pragmatic captain. She worked hard to secure the safety of her crew when her ship and crew were lightyears away from any Federation station of known civilization. She and her crew struggled across an unexplored region of space, often disregarding Federation protocol in the pursuit of survival, to get home safely. While many fans disagree with Janeway’s techniques, others see it as a survivalist’s mentality and drive. Also, you will find out which Star Trek character are you in this quiz.

Captain Benjamin Sisko led the Deep Space 9 space station for seven years and is widely regarded as the initiator of the Dominion War when he ignored the Dominion’s ultimatum. Sisko, who was also known as the Emissary of the Prophets after discovering the Bajoran wormhole, was hailed as a great tactician and was crucial to the Federation’s triumph in the war.

About the quiz

Sisko’s approach to his position as Captain was unique in that he used blackmail and other more political means to intimidate individuals in his conversations.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard was a well-respected Captain during his tenure, commanding both the USS Stargazer and the USS Enterprise and establishing first contact with a number of alien species, including the Ferengi, the Q Continuum, and the cybernetic terror known as the Borg. Although he was a skilled battlefield strategist, performing the Picard Maneuver by using the ship’s warp drive to appear in two places at once, he preferred a more diplomatic approach, making sure to respect a race’s ideals and motivations while asserting the Federation’s role as a protector of the innocent. Picard would subsequently leave Starfleet because he no longer believed in assisting civilization.

Despite his repeated contempt for Starfleet and Federation regulations, Captain James Tiberius Kirk is one of the most decorated Starfleet captains. During his five-year assignment, Kirk set a record for the most new species encountered, as well as becoming a time traveler before becoming a Federation Rear Admiral. Kirk died after being involved in the Genisis event, where he met his spiritual successor Captain Jena-Luc Picard. Kirk is also the only person to have defeated the Kobayashi Maru scenario in Starfleet Academy, an unbreakable training exercise. Kirk reconfigured the test on his third attempt and won a commendation for his innovative approach.

Which Original Star Trek Character are you?

About This Quiz

Gene Roddenberry created "Star Trek" in the 1960's, and "The Original Series" made quite a splash. It was a cult hit that soon expanded beyond its original base. It achieved unbelievable things: the first interracial kiss on a screen, a depiction of a Russian cooperating with a team of Americans that was broadcast at the height of the Cold War, a world in which women were equals and could command starships.

The show cast a spell on us with its promise of frontiers yet unexplored, enemies yet defeated, and a planetary society in which poverty has been eliminated and all of humanity has united to work toward the next great stage of our evolution. Most of all, people loved it then and still love it today because it spun a cracking good yarn. It appealed to the best in us: to logic, to love, to the spirit of adventure that made America what it is today. It's no surprise that the series counted Martin Luther King himself among one of its most devoted fans.

"The Original Series" centered on the crew of the Enterprise, which was named in honor of a variety of other ships going back to 1705 and Lord Nelson. An intrepid, but rather cheeky captain led a multinational, multiracial, all-gender, inter-species crew to boldly go where no man had gone before. From his very logical science officer to his somewhat fraught chief engineer to his superbly competent chief communications officer, Captain James T. Kirk was blessed with a crew of truly exceptional people. Let's find out which of them you most resemble!

The Morning

Ukraine’s new hope.

How an aid package from the U.S. could affect the war.

A soldier holding a grenade launcher runs through smoke in a forest.

By German Lopez

You have probably read that the war in Ukraine is a stalemate. But conditions have changed in recent months — in Russia’s favor. It has captured more territory, and it seems likely to launch a larger offensive later this spring or summer. In the meantime, Ukraine’s ability to fight back has deteriorated since the U.S. largely stopped sending aid in December.

The $60 billion in Ukraine aid that the House passed over the weekend has the potential to change the situation yet again. The Senate is likely to pass the bill in the coming days, and President Biden has signaled that he will sign it.

In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain how the aid package could affect the war.

Ukraine’s needs

American funds will help Ukraine restock two things that have played pivotal roles in the war: artillery shells and antiaircraft munitions.

The war has often revolved around artillery, which are large guns that armies use to fire explosive shells and hit targets from a great distance. Both sides have used artillery to kill troops and destroy tanks and bunkers from miles away, weakening the enemy before an attack. Artillery has also stopped advancing armies.

In recent months, though, Ukraine has started to run out of artillery shells. Russian forces have fired five to 10 times as many shells as Ukraine. “That’s just not sustainable,” my colleague Eric Schmitt, who covers national security, told me. “Ukraine would eventually have to give up territory and pull back.”

Ukraine has also relied on antiaircraft weapons, such as U.S.-made Patriot missiles, that can shoot down planes and missiles. The threat of these weapons has kept Russia from unleashing the full might of its air force, because it fears that Ukraine would destroy its expensive planes. Russia has instead resorted to long-range missiles, and Ukraine has shot down many of them.

But Ukraine had started to run out of those munitions, too. Last week, President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Ukraine’s short supplies for its inability to stop a Russian missile barrage that killed at least 17 people north of Kyiv. “This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment,” Zelensky said.

The new artillery and anti-air munitions will start to arrive in Ukraine just days after the bill becomes law. The $60 billion will pay for several months’ worth of weapons.

Some of the aid will also go for training. That support will help address another Ukrainian shortage — in personnel — by allowing the military to prepare newer recruits for the front lines more quickly. It will also help teach Ukraine’s forces how to use some of the advanced weapons they are receiving from Western allies, including Abrams tanks and F-16 jets.

What comes next

Once the aid starts arriving, Ukraine is likely to put it to work on the eastern front, where Russia has recently taken the city of Avdiivka. It could halt Russia’s recent progress and prevent much larger advances. Some analysts have worried that an undersupplied Ukraine would struggle to defend the countryside around Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, after Kyiv, and its remaining territory along the Black Sea coastline.

star trek race quiz

“With more aid, Ukraine will probably be able to solidify its defenses and keep its most important cities,” said my colleague Julian Barnes, who covers intelligence and national security.

If all goes well, Ukraine could launch an offensive campaign in 2025, perhaps to retake territory in the country’s east and southeast. One important goal: to drive a wedge between Russia’s holdings in the eastern region of the Donbas and the southern peninsula of Crimea.

Ukraine’s official goal is to retake all of the Donbas and Crimea. Many experts are skeptical that Ukraine can do that, especially after last year’s disappointing counteroffensive. And some critics of the aid package argue that it won’t even allow Ukraine to stop Russia’s advance. Senator J.D. Vance, an Ohio Republican, says that U.S. manufacturing can’t currently keep pace with Russian weapons production. The war simply matters more to Russia than the West, and Russia is dedicating more resources to it, these critics have argued.

Still, most experts believe the additional aid will make a meaningful difference. They worry that an easier Russian victory could encourage it to invade other countries, or encourage China to invade Taiwan, by undermining confidence in the U.S. and its allies.

The most realistic scenario for Ukraine is probably not a return to the prewar borders. The nation would be smaller, but it could retain most of its territory, then integrate itself economically and strategically with Europe. That’s a lot better than outright defeat.

The Donbas region was an industrial hub for Ukraine. It’s now the focal point for Russia’s ground offensives .
