During an appearance on tonight's (September 22) episode of The One Show alongside presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp, the naturalist sat down to discuss his new book 'Deep Blue: My Ocean Journeys' as well as his dangerous encounters with marine creatures.

"Over the course of my life, the world's oceans have changed dramatically. We've lost 60% of the world's wildlife," he said. "But in the same time... we've also learnt that there are things we can do to make our seas flourish."

Backshall talked about how the book details his interactions with marine creatures, starting from an encounter with a shark at age nine during a family trip to Malaysia.

How to watch Shark with Steve Backshall

Shark with Steve Backshall is a new four-part natural history TV series from Sky, presented by the BAFTA-winning naturalist Steve Backshall. Expect dramatic photography and gripping stories as Steve dives with great white sharks, hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks and many more.

Paul McGuinness

When is Shark with Steve Backshall on TV?

Sharks is a brand-new four-part documentary series on Sky Nature , with all episodes available from 7 November.

What is Shark with Steve Backshall about?

BBC Wildlife editor Paul McGuinness asked presenter Steve Backshall what we can expect to see in the series...

Steve Backshall diving with a shark

"What you won’t see is anything about shark attacks or man-eaters, or sharks in any way posing a threat to us as human beings. I wanted to make a series that was, pure and simple, about the beauty and wonder and majesty of sharks and the threats they face.

"We’ve taken on all of the iconic species – the great hammerheads , the tigers, the bulls, the great whites, the oceanic white tips. But we’ve also taken on some of the lesser-known species – the lantern sharks, cat sharks, epaulette sharks, pyjama sharks – the ones that people may not necessarily know about.

"And my hope is that it will bring onside a whole bunch of people who don’t even really realise quite how much they like sharks."

Steve Backshall Steve snorkelling with a Critically Endangered oceanic whitetip shark.

How much did you dive with sharks in this series?

"It’s a combination. People have been bandying around the term ‘new chip’ to talk about synthesis kind of projects where you have elements of blue-chip natural history, which I will be purely voicing over and where I wasn’t present, and moments where I am interacting with sharks in their environment.

"And so there is a combination of those grandest, most majestic images of sharks in their natural habitat, filmed by the very best natural history camera people in the world, over time, to have a chance of seeing their behaviour.

"And then interactions in the moment, whether that be trying to release oceanic white tip, nurse or dusky sharks that have been entangled or are carrying hooks, or whether it be down on the bottom with tasselled wobbegongs or in a cave in South Africa alongside ragged-tooth sharks. So I hope that there is something in there for everyone, from biologists and shark saviours, through to people who know very little more than Jaws and great whites."

How much of Shark with Steve Backshall was filmed around the UK?

"One whole programme has been solely shot in British waters – and not just the obvious basking sharks and blue sharks but things like lesser-spotted cat shark and skates, rays and other shark relatives that we have here in our seas.

"As well as delving into the natural history of things that people may not realise are vagrant visitors into our shores, things like the Greenland shark . That was really important to me, that one, and I think particularly for your readers because a lot of people, even biologists may not realise quite how many species of sharks we have in our seas. I’m a shark fanatic and I didn’t realise that we’d had scalloped hammerheads coming through our waters and that we’d had Greenland sharks washed up on our shores."

steve backshall shark tour

View the trailer:   HERE

Steve Backshall will soon return to screens as he explores the incredible world of our oceans in  Whale with Steve Backshall   coming to Sky Nature and NOW on 3 December 2023.

Following the success of Sky Nature’s  Shark with Steve Backshall , this brand-new, four-part series follows Steve as he free dives with whales and dolphins, getting closer than ever before, providing the audience the opportunity to witness rarely seen behaviours from these extraordinary mammals.

Through immersive, stunning natural history sequences, we’ll follow mighty sperm and humpback whales, and meet intelligent orcas and bottlenose dolphins. The series explores their complex social relationships, surprising hunting techniques and we’ll discover that – just like us – whales have very close-knit family units.

A naturalist, conservationist and Sky Ocean Hero Ambassador, Steve teams up with world-leading scientists to confront the uncomfortable and urgent truths of overfishing, exploring how whales and dolphins are adapting to the ever-changing ocean environment in unexpected ways. Joining whale advocates across the globe who are achieving some great conservation successes, Steve will discover why whales are essential for the health of our oceans, what we can do to ensure their survival and achieve the most remarkable conservation story of all.

Steve Backshall commented on the new series : “The surface of the world’s ocean is the hottest it’s ever been - our sea life is in danger and we need to take urgent action. Visting the habitats of these remarkable mammals put into sharp focus how integral they are to our oceans’ health and why we must do everything we can to reduce threats to their existence.”

Poppy Dixon, Director Documentaries and Factual for Sky added:  “We’re thrilled to be launching this stunning natural history series with Steve Backshall – a remarkable free-diver with world-class expertise in ocean life, Steve is the perfect guide to take audiences on this eye-opening journey amongst the whales and dolphins of our planet.”

EP1: WHALES AND US

Steve Backshall explores our changing understanding of whales and reveals we have much in common.

Whales are mammals just like us and despite living in an underwater world that couldn’t be more different from ours, we share so much. Steve dives into their underwater world on their terms to reveal the profound wisdom, complex family lives and advanced communication abilities that makes them so familiar to us. He encounters matriarchal Sperm Whales and rarely recorded Risso’s Dolphins in the Azores, playful Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas and singing Humpbacks in the South Pacific. With each meeting, he explores how, as we learn more about them, human perception of whales has shifted from fear and misunderstanding, to wonder and appreciation. He discovers that our historical misperception of whales made it easy to treat them as commodities during the era of whaling and that, even in the modern world, we are still causing them unwitting harm as their world of sound becomes increasingly noisy. Finally, Steve asks how a new golden age of discovery can allow us to better protect them in a rapidly changing world.

EP2: OCEAN HUNTERS

Steve Backshall reveals the ingenious hunting strategies of whales, the largest predators on the planet.

Contrary to myth, whales do not just swim around with their mouths open. All whales and dolphins are extraordinary predators, using sound, skill, teamwork, and strategy to catch their prey. Steve enters their world as they hunt to understand what makes them the ocean’s apex predators. An extraordinary face to face encounter with the most sophisticated of all, Orca, begins a journey that reveals the remarkable abilities of the ocean’s greatest predators.

In the Bahamas, Steve experiences super-sensing Bottlenose Dolphins that see through sand with sound and in the Azores comes close to huge Sei Whales lunge feeding on baitballs corralled by dolphins. From the largest animal ever to have lived, the Blue Whale, to the strange Boto dolphin feeding on piranha in flooded Amazon forests, their hunting strategies know no bounds.

Taking to freezing Arctic waters in Norway, Steve discovers how these ingenious hunters are even using us to help them catch their food. Yet as their world and ours collide, these varied strategies are putting them at risk from bycatch, entanglement and pollution and Steve asks what we can do to protect them.

EP3: OCEAN VOYAGERS

Steve Backshall journeys the globe with some of the greatest travelers on the planet.

Migratory whales clock up thousands of miles a year to reach special places where they feed, breed and raise their young. Steve meets those who face the longest journeys of all to uncover where they go, when, and why it’s worth starving for half the year to get there.

His odyssey begins in the birthing grounds of Tahiti, where one curious young humpback calf gives him the encounter of a lifetime. In Argentina, a female Southern Right Whale has also journeyed to give birth. Rare underwater footage captures her newborn calf taking its first drink of mother’s milk. Eager males are also here to mate. Yet this paradise is changing. Flesh-eating gulls attack the calves, reducing their chances of survival.

Migrating whales face a growing list of threats, from the danger of increasing ship traffic to climate change, affecting Grey Whales that give birth on migration rather than in safe birthing grounds.

In Norway, humpbacks arrive after their long voyages. Steve takes to a paddleboard, as he encounters a group feasting on herring and questions what their future may hold as their world changes.

EP4: OCEAN SURVIVORS - WHALES OF THE BRITISH ISLES

Steve Backshall returns home to ask, if whales have survived so much, what can we all do to ensure their enduring future

The waters of the North Atlantic are a global hotspot for whales and dolphins - home to a third of the world’s species. Steve travels to the British Isles to follow some specific stories of survival and meet the people striving to give whales and dolphins a future. He joins scientists making surprising discoveries about the lengths whales have gone to to adapt to changes we’ve caused to their ocean homes and asks how we can adapt our behaviour to give them a more successful future.

A Moscow Free Walking Tour of the Iconic Red Square

Updated March 10th, 2020

This post might contain affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, if you buy through my site. I appreciate your support of my site.

No visit to Moscow, Russia is complete unless you take a walk around the famous Red Square and see the iconic sights of the city. One of the best ways to see all the famous landmarks in Moscow and learn a little something about them too is on a free Moscow walking tour through the Red Square.

Continue reading for a sneak peek at what you will see on your free tour in Moscow and for tips on both the tour and visiting the sights. Make sure to save some time during your trip to go inside of the magnificent buildings because you will not be going in the buildings during the tour.

The State Historical Museum

Moscow State Historical Museum

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

The Kremlin looks rather imposing. It would be great to explore the history in Moscow.

There is a lot of history in Moscow to explore!

What a handy guide to get the most of Moscow’s red square! I’ve always wanted to try a walking tour and this looks like the perfect place to start!

I really enjoy walking tours, I think they are a great way to get to know a new place!

You have highlighted all the main sights around and in the Red Square indeed! I have visited Moscow in winter and the atmosphere was magical…even though it was cold 🙂 I’m looking forward to visiting in summer too!

Yes, there is a magical feel during the winter. I have to say I prefer the warmer, brighter summers though 🙂

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. Please check out my other posts as you are planning your trip and feel free to send any questions my way!

I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!

I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.
