Stormzy: ‘The greatest music on Earth is coming out of Africa’

Back in the studio working on new music in the run-up to his 30th birthday, stormzy reflects on his part in a cross-generational, globe-spanning story that’s ‘got the world on fire’.

Stormzy Dazed cover 2023 Liz Johnson Artur

Next month, Stormzy will turn 30. July 26, this chapter will close, and out on the horizon, a new one will open. Boy becomes man, the chaos of youth firming into the full blooms of adulthood. Time comes for everyone, the tide must roll in. And soon, he will be next.

Stormzy isn’t nervous about this passover. He has been ready for 30. He feels fresh. He feels healthy and he feels sharp. Last November he released his third album, This Is What I Mean , a liberating record pulling on influences ranging from soul to rap, R&B to Afrobeats, the 12 songs teasing out his private, poignant reflections on a deepening faith, on broken relationships with fathers and ex-partners, on his mental health and more.

Mort Garson, Mother Earth’s Plantasia

Today, he is sitting in a small, windowless recording room of a south London studio, reflecting on what has passed since then, and what is to come. "There’s a difference in doing music at 22 and when you’re about to turn 30,” he says. “It’s the kind of peace and stability and stillness you can only get from maturity. You lose all the nervous shivers and the anxiety; you shake it off because now you’re a grown man coming into your skin.”

A week after finishing This Is What I Mean , Stormzy was back in the studio, recording new music. It was the first time he had completed the long, intense album process with his sanity, wellness and mental stability all in check. Usually, after finishing albums, he is plagued by a heaviness, feeling mentally drained and overwhelmed. But this time he felt light, crediting the shift to God.

And so, as 30 approaches, he has new music on the horizon. He has purpose and joy. He feels relaxed. But he has questions, too: Where should I be aligned? What’s next for me?

There were things Stormzy always pictured in his future, dreams and ambitions he saw one day blooming into reality. “It’s off to the charts I go,” he said on a freestyle when he was around 18. “Come from below, then I blow like I’m due to,” he rapped on “ Not That Deep ”, three years later. There was something in the way God spoke to him. He felt things. He knew someday a headlining slot at Glastonbury would come to pass. There was a knowing, a sense of what was waiting out in his future. And so, he committed his dreams to faith and spirit and his God. And eventually, by work and grace and timing, they arrived.

In 2017, his debut album Gang Signs & Prayer entered at number one on the UK album charts, selling 68,594 copies in its first week, the first grime album to mount the summit. He was 23. A year later, he won British album of the year and British male solo artist at the Brits. At 25, he walked out under the beaming lights of the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury, the first Black British solo act to headline.

A young boy’s pipe dream had spiralled beyond anything he could imagine. He expected success, but never knew it would come so quickly. And so now here he is, in a windowless, south London studio, almost 30, three albums deep, millions of records sold, one of the biggest musicians in the country, waiting with questions for the same God and spirit who guided him here: Where should I be aligned? What’s next for me?

The old will be burned, and in its ashes, something new.

“All I know is that the next chapter for me includes music, but other than that?” he says, “I don’t know. It’s the most beautiful ‘I don’t know’... There’s no confusion in where I should be and who I should be. It’s like ‘God, I’m ready to do the work here on Earth, you just guide it.’”

Stormzy Dazed cover 2023 Liz Johnson Artur

The road that led him here was paved by many hands. There are pieces of others in him. To know Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr you must know Croydon and south London and a generation of young people who grew under the haze of the new millennium.

Croydon rests in the deepest waters of south London, a borough boundaried with Surrey and the fringes of the rural North Downs in the south, then running inland towards the north of the borough, until the greenery yields and the dense inner-city towns of Thornton Heath, Selhurst, Norbury and South Norwood rise from the earth. Stormzy was raised in this northern half, in a section of the borough that holds one of the largest localised settlements of Black people in Britain.

Rap and music have echoed around these roads for generations. Young men and women unfurling from African and Caribbean ancestral lines, tumbling out into deep south London, using a 16-bar to set their joys and sorrows into stone. His generation inherited this tradition. They came of age in a time when grime and UK rap had descended out of garage and dancehall and hip hop, and the urge to MC on a street corner, in the town centre, on the back of a bus was as natural as drawing breath. “Man was listening to just bare UK,” he says, “just British music.”

The music was woven into the social climate. The northern half of Croydon had long wrestled with alarming levels of deprivation and inequality, of child poverty and low income, and a serious youth violence crisis sweeping through the inner city, claiming the young. In south London, UK rap and grime spoke to the same fragility that birthed it, his generation clinging to the music that surfaced in the fallout of these extremes. There are melodic jewels from this time that echoed through Croydon; the ruggedness of the ‘gangsta grime’ collective Roadside G’s, or the poetic pleading of a song like “ Cry ” by Swiss of So Solid Crew, whose tender and mournful surveying of the human condition in south London spoke to the collective Black soul.

“There’s no confusion in where I should be and who I should be. It’s like ‘God, I’m ready to do the work here on Earth, you just guide it’” – Stormzy

Stormzy grew up in Norbury with his mum, his two sisters and his brother. His mum worked two or three jobs. He remembers how she would come home in the afternoon from a shift, make a corned beef sandwich, put the kettle on, sit in front of the TV for a little while, then pull her trainers on and head straight out again for her next job.

And so, he was an outside kid. Some days he’d be out in Norbury or Thornton Heath, on the roadsides with his friends when somebody would put on an instrumental, and they would all start rapping. “It wasn’t even as deep as ‘music’ yet, man just loved to spit... to fuck up the riddim,” says Stormzy. “Man has to come with man’s 16-bar and fuck the place up and say some slick shit.”

In these first flirtations with music are the traces of who he would become. On a song with another local MC, Weazy, a budding artistry slowly begins to find form. He’s in his early to mid-teens, his voice high, his flow aggressive as he paces through punchlines: “Bullets will cover man / If I don’t drop him with the first then I’ll give him another bang.” They were teenagers MCing about what they knew, posturing with exaggerated lyrical threats and speaking on the goings-on in their own small corner of the city, the local roads of home their only reference point before the world showed them anything else.

As boys, they would rove to other areas of the borough, chilling with other groups, “getting up to whatever” and battling the other anointed spitters from around the way. It was in these earliest arenas, with his first audiences, where he began to realise he had a gift, where he would hear the gathered crowd react with an “ohhhh” or a “bap-bap-bap!” whenever he unveiled his 16 or 32-bar freestyle.

Stormzy Dazed cover 2023 Liz Johnson Artur

There was a hierarchy in the ends. When Stormzy was in school, the rappers and MCs a few years older than him were local celebrities, kids like Krept, Konan, Cadet, Sayper, Drives and Charmz who gained early hood fame. Charmz – Carl Beatson Asiedu – was one of the top boys, an MC Stormzy admired (“The hardest, and witty, clever, sick, funny”). He was a dreamer who would go on to have an early breakout funky house anthem titled “ Buy Out Da Bar ”. One day, when out on the ends, Stormzy was around when Charmz was spitting with friends. He joined in. The two started going back-to-back. Charmz, impressed by what he’d heard, bestowed on Stormzy the tag ‘Younger Charmz’.

In south London and across Britain’s inner cities, tags were used in place of government names. They were the marker your local community knew you by, your first assertions of self to your own small world. A ‘younger’ version of you was then crowned on a little sibling, cousin or friend, a piece of you passed on to somebody you saw yourself in. Sometimes a ‘Younger’ would then pass the tag on to a ‘Tiny’, a ‘Tiny’ on to a ‘Baby’, the name handed down the generations. Gaining the title ‘Younger Charmz’ was “like a badge of honour,” Stormzy says. “He was the best in man’s area.”

Stormzy’s life and career are scattered with small memories like this, moments that made a dream possible, boys who came before, handing down a rope so he could climb. Many of those kids gave up rap and grime long ago. Some stuck with it. Others never made it to 30, lives lost to a dangerous time in south London. His music remembers them, remembers those who never crossed the threshold into full adulthood, remembers the nervous chapter in British history they emerged from.

Charmz passed in 2009, fatally stabbed after a club performance in Kennington. They played “Cry” by Swiss at his funeral. Stormzy references him on “ Don’t Cry for Me ” from his first album (“Now I’m just picturing Charmz all dressed in white / On the steps with Christ”). At Glastonbury he paid tribute to his friend Cadet, who died in a car crash in 2019. By these works they live on, cast in bronze on his records, the pieces of others now resting in him.

“The greatest music on Earth is coming out of Africa. Even that is just inspiring: be your Black self. And look! It’s got the world on fire. I’ll tell my kids I was a part of this time in culture. I had an offering. I was here; I was a part of it” – Stormzy

The road that led him here began before south London. Stormzy stands at a vanguard. He is not alone. In the past decade, sounds from across the Black and African diaspora have pushed out from localised music scenes, rising in a choral union to pierce the heart of global, mainstream pop culture. Afrobeats has rumbled out from Ghana and Nigeria, UK rap from Britain, Afro-trap in France, drill from Chicago, London and New York, amapiano from South Africa, dancehall in Jamaica. Black communities, separated by landmass and water, their bonds broken by the residues of colonisation and slavery, have found their way back to each other in sound.

Stormzy is a part of this. In recent years he has collaborated with Ghanaian drill artist Yaw Tog; vocalist Aya Nakamura hailing from France by way of Mali; Burna Boy from Port Harcourt, Nigeria; the singer Tems from Lagos, Nigeria and dancehall artist Stylo G from Spanish Town, Jamaica by way of south London, among others.

During a crucial scene in last year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , a film that has become a regular meeting point for the Black diaspora, actors by way of Guyana and London, Trinidad and New York, Zimbabwe and Iowa, Kenya and Mexico move across the screen. Stormzy’s vocals guide them, his song “ Interlude ” soundtracking the moment. In this golden era, his fingerprints are present.

“People are just being unapologetic in their Blackness and it’s the greatest music on Earth right now,” he says about this moment in history. “The greatest music on Earth is coming out of Africa. Even that is just inspiring: be your Black self. And look! It’s got the world on fire. I’ll tell my kids I was a part of this time in culture. I had an offering. I was here; I was a part of it.”

Stormzy’s presence reflects the rooting of a distinct Ghanaian and west African presence in Britain, and the unique form it took once settled. In the late 70s and early 80s, Ghana was a country reckoning with political instability and economic decline. Unemployment was high. Subsidies on social services like health, transport and education were withdrawn, and a young generation began leaving the country in search of better horizons, settling across North America and Europe.

By the 1990s, estimates suggested that around 10-20 per cent of Ghana’s population of 20 million people were living abroad, joined by immigrants from other African countries such as Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya, some of whose economies were suffering a similar fate. Places like Croydon were a centre point of these new communities, who then birthed a generation of African kids native to Britain. Stormzy was one of these kids.

His family line reaches back to the Nungua Barrier in the Greater Accra Region. He was a baby when he first went to Ghana. As he got older, his mum would take them in the summer holidays and, despite their protests, they would be there for weeks. “We wanted to be on the ends with all the madmen doing stupidness,” he says, “but our parents just wanted to go home. That’s what Ghana was for man.”

As he got older and continued to visit, Stormzy’s relationship with the country deepened. “You just understand everything goes back full circle,” he says. “You get it, like that’s home innit; that’s home, bruv.”

“We wanted to be on the ends with all the madmen doing stupidness, but our parents just wanted to go home. That’s what Ghana was for man” – Stormzy

This blending of Black Britain and west Africa, south London and Ghana has shaped him. It’s why he can be nominated by Croydon council for the freedom of the borough award as he was in March, and then, when in Accra for the Global Citizen Festival last September, can say of the country, “It’s in my blood. It’s in my people. It’s in my home.” To be born in his part of Britain is to walk with two worlds inside you.

He holds south London, his birthplace with him. But he holds Ghana and Africa too. The stories of his mum, and those who nurtured his generation of African kids native to Britain, live through him. My own mother gets excited when she sees him on TV. They are proud of him as if he is their own, an illustration of their journey into an unknown, proof that their gamble to make their lives in foreign lands was not in vain. Through him and their children, that generation of African migrants who for so long toiled away in the quiet corners of Britain are finally seen.

Next month, Stormzy will turn 30. His sound has evolved since the block cyphers, and the first album they led to. The raps are more polished, more elaborate, his flows more refined. But there are similarities, too. The joy of recording is still there, the feeling of gathering in the studio and guiding a song or a lyric out from the ether still igniting his spirit. If ever a time comes when it doesn’t, he’ll stop altogether. On record he continues to reach inwards, searching himself and his emotions. And sometimes, when the calling is there, he sings.

“I think now even creatively nothing has changed,” he says. “I think maybe now I’m even bolder, and I’m even braver, and I’m even more fearless. But I’ve always been that... I’m all those things but with maturity.”

Stormzy Dazed cover 2023 Liz Johnson Artur

In the studio, he plays me a new song, rap and vocals echoing round the room. He sits quietly, head slowly bouncing to the knock of the bass as his voice booms from the speakers. The record leans into more traditional rap than This Is What I Mean . There are the twisting flow patterns, and punchlines reminiscent of “ Mel Made Me Do It ”, his single from last year. There is a swagger and a confidence in his tone, the ease of a man who has been rapping for more than half of his life now.

He feels some will receive his new music as an auto-correction after the tenderness of This Is What I Mean , a pendulum swinging back from the edge. But for him, the span of sounds feels instinctive, the many faces of his artistry showing themselves in a range of tones and genres.

“This artist and the artist who made Gang Signs & Prayer are so different, but they are exactly the fucking same,” he says. “ GS&P Stormz and 2023 Stormz, neither of them gives a fuck about pleasing someone’s appetite. Not in an ignorant way, [but] because it’s coming from a real, genuine place in [my] spirit.”

This is who he is as 30 approaches, as one chapter closes out and another opens. He feels rooted. He feels free.

"We were having back to back meetings, bouncing ideas. Then it hit me, I started jotting down ideas thinking – live band, need a live band.

"August 2023, a summer time thing, outside, for the people, always for my people. So August 2023, Victoria Park, more info coming soon… This Is What We Mean Day. Hard.”

The 'Vossi Bop' hitmaker recently revealed he is extremely "proud" of his new record.

He said: "I've never been this excited for new music. I've never felt so proud and confident in the art I've made. And the beautiful thing about it is that it's ... all my confidence and all my pride comes from the art.

"It doesn't come from who people may think I am or what I've achieved - it's none of that. It's just a, 'Yo, we've made something really beautiful, really special'. Something that people will feel, you know what I mean?"

He has since admitted he has "made peace with the idea" that not all of his fans will like the new collection.

He explained: "This idea of being in the studio, thinking you have to make a certain kind of song… it’s the least creative place you can be,” he said. “And really, the audience doesn’t even know what they like – and I know that because I’m the same when I’m listening to music.”

Stormzy's third album 'this is what i mean'.

Stormzy released his third album 'This Is What I Mean' in November 2022. The album is a follow-up to the phenomenal 'Heavy Is The Head', which was released in 2019. 'This Is What I Mean' reached Number 1 in the UK charts and is now certified Silver in the UK.

On the day of release, Stormzy shared a heartfelt statement saying how much he loves music. He also thanked anyone who has listened to his album, even if they didn't like it.

The album was preceded by non-album single 'Mel Made Me Do It', which won Stormzy his sixth MOBO Award at the ceremony in February 2024, taking home Video of The Year. This tied him with Central Cee for most awarded rappers in MOBOs history.

What is stormzy's biggest hit.

Stormzy has had three Number 1 albums in the UK and three Number 1 hits. 'Vossi Bop' was released in 2019, and was the lead single from his second album 'Heavy Is the Head' - with the song now being certified 3× Platinum in the UK.

Stormzy's second UK number was 'Own It' with Ed Sheeran and Burna Boy. Not only was this a Number 1 track - but it was also the first Number 1 of the 2020s, being certified 3× Platinum in the UK and selling over 1.8 million units. Stormzy also featured on Ed Sheeran's track 'Take Me Back to London', which reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and is certified 2x Platinum in the UK.

Are stormzy and maya jama back together.

Sadly, Stormzy and Maya Jama announced that they'd split for the second time in July 2024, releasing a joint statement to confirm the news: 'We’ve spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits.

'We still think the absolute world of each other, we still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we’ve had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends (so if you see us having a lil catch-up at The Brits or something, don’t cause a fuss, we are dawgs!).

Stormzy and Maya were originally in a relationship from 2015 to 2019. However, years after the pair ended things, fans were delighted when they were spotted together on holiday in Greece in August 2023 - leading people to speculate about whether they had rekindled their romance.

Stormzy and Maya appeared together looking loved-up at The Fashion Awards in November 2023, and hand-in-hand at events such as Paris Fashion Week and F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain.

Although the pair kept their relationship relatively private, in June 2024 Maya shared some pictures from the pair's trip away, when they attended the Louis Vuitton menswear show in France.

Sharing some sweet photos from their trip to Instagram, she wrote: 'LVovers 🖤 Thankyou for having us @louisvuitton @pharrell'. (sic)

Although fans will be upset that it didn't work between them, many will understand and appreciate the former couple's transparency!

Stormzy: Working with Ed Sheeran

Teaming up with singer-songwriter/all-round music wizard Ed Sheeran , Stormzy brought us huge hits such as 'Take Me Back To London' and 'Own It', making it pretty much safe to label these two an iconic duo!

'Take Me Back to London' saw the pair reach Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, as fans went crazy for the collaboration between the two. Of course, this led to further excitement when they teamed up once more on 'Own It', which flew to the Number 1 spot in the UK Charts. Ed also featured in the music videos for the hit songs, which have both accumulated millions of views on YouTube.

These two have since formed an enviable friendship, with Stormzy referring to the 'Perfect' singer as his "brother", adding that he has "nothing but good words to say about him". Of course, Ed is also good mates with Taylor Swift, who Stormzy met backstage at the MTV EMAs, so could a collaboration between all three be on the cards? Watch this space...

Stormzy's collaboration with RAYE

In July 2023, Stormzy teamed up with 'Escapism' hitmaker RAYE to release the massive track 'The Weekend'. The song details the trials and tribulations of finding love, combining Stormzy's rap with RAYE's soulful vocals. You can watch the official video for 'The Weekend' below...

Stormzy as GQ's Man of the Year

Stormzy was announced as British GQ's Men of the Year cover star on Monday 14th November 2022, a hugely prestigious title for the 25th anniversary of the celebration - making him only the fifth British name to be cover star for the issue.

In the profile, Stormz opened up about his childhood, saying: "I realised, especially growing up in South London in the environment I grew up in, there’s never going to be a time anyone encourages man to go deal with his feelings.

"That’s a very adult thing to think, I’m gonna go deal with my life and my character with who I am and who I want to grow to be. There is power in vulnerability."

Has Stormzy been to the Met Gala?

He sure has, and it's safe to say that Stormzy truly worked the red carpet on the steps of the Met Gala 2022 . With the dress code being White Tie, the rapper well and truly completed the assignment as he donned an all-white Burberry three-piece wool suit, which featured satin lapels and even had a matching cape, designed by Riccardo Tisci!

As fans of the rapper will know, he has a tendency to quite often wear all black. The 'Vossi Bop' star admitted that the suit differed from his usual style, however that's not to say he didn't like it!

Speaking to Vogue, he said: "Usually I wear all black a lot of the time... So it’s nice to shine today. I am nervous, it’s crazy like, it’s a lot different but it’s amazing, I’m just going to embrace it!"

Stormzy's waxwork at madame tussauds.

On 26th July 2021, aka Stormzy's 28th birthday, it was announced that the rapper would be getting his very own waxwork at Madame Tussauds London . Joining the attraction's star-studded summer line-up, Madame Tussauds' official Instagram announced the news along with an adorable video of Stormzy, along with his nephew, seeing his figure for the first time - giving his mum a quick FaceTime too.

Donating £10 million to black organisations

Following the Black Lives Matter protests after the tragic death of George Floyd, Stormzy pledged to donate a massive £10 million over the next 10 years to black organisations in the UK.

The statement read: "The uncomfortable truth that our country continuously fails to recognise and admit, is that black people in the UK have been at a constant disadvantage in every aspect of life - simply due to the colour of our skin.

"I’m lucky enough to be in the position I’m in and I’ve heard people often dismiss the idea of racism existing in Britain by saying “if the country’s so racist how have you become a success?!” and I reject that with this: I am not the UK’s shining example of what supposedly happens when a black person works hard.

"There are millions of us. We are not far and few. We have to fight against the odds of a racist system stacked against us and designed for us to fail from before we are even born. Black people have been playing on an uneven field for far too long and this pledge is a continuation in the fight to finally try and even it.”

The star's charity Merky Foundation also donated a huge £500,000 to help fund college and university for underprivileged students.

In 2021, Powerlist 2021 Stormzy ranked as the third most influential Black Briton, for his advocacy against racial injustice and philanthropy, pledging £10 million to charities

Check out Stormzy's incredible career timeline:

2013: career beginnings.

Aged 19 in 2013, Stormzy was trying to make his music career happen while working in Southampton at an oil refinery. He released his first full project '168: The Mixtape'. The piece got its name from the fact it was recorded in one week - or 168 hours.

2014: MOBO win

The next year he followed up with 'Dreamers Disease EP' and the seven tracks shot to Number 1 in the iTunes Hip Hop/Rap chart and that year Stormzy scooped up Best Grime Artist at the MOBO Awards. That's when things really started to take off for Stormzy as more and more people took notice of his talent. Fans were also feeling his love of Nando's, and he'd occasionally take fans there for free or casually gift them Adidas trainers.

2015: 'Know Me From' and 'Shut Up'

Stormzy also won Best Grime Act for the second year running at the 2015 MOBO Awards, and in February 2015 he dropped his first single 'Know Me From' with track 'Shut Up' following shortly after.

2015: Anthony Joshua performance

Stormzy performed 'Shut Up' live at Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte's boxing match at the O2 as Joshua's entrance music. The single was the first ever freestyle to enter the UK Top 40 and peaked at Number 18, which led Stormzy to launch a campaign to get the song to Christmas Number 1. It had such support that the song did indeed break into the Top 10 for Christmas - although it didn't reach the top spot, it peaked at Number 8 and was his highest-charting single at the time.

2017: Debut album release

Following a year's career break in 2016 and a social media hiatus, Stormzy burst back onto the scene in 2017, releasing his debut album 'Gang Signs & Prayer' in February - going straight to Number 1. Stormzy also took part in the Artists For Grenfell campaign, featuring on the charity single 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' to raise funds for the residents of Grenfell Tower. At the BRIT Awards , he took home the gong for British Male Solo Artist.

2018: BRIT Awards performance

Stormzy's epic performance at the BRIT Awards 2018 saw the rapper use his platform to call out the government for not doing enough to help the residents of Grenfell Tower. His album 'Gang Signs & Prayer' became the first ever rap album to win British Album of the Year.

2019: Glastonbury Festival headline slot and second album

2019 was another big year for Stormzy - his headline set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival 2019 was hugely acclaimed, and he once again used his platform to comment on politics. Wearing a Union Jack stab vest designed by artist Banksy, many took this as a comment on knife crime in London. He also used a speech made by Labour MP David Lammy on the British criminal justice system. Stormzy released his second album, 'Heavy Is the Head', in December 2019, which went to Number 1 in the UK.

2020: BRIT Award win

Stormzy announced his 'Heavy is the Head' tour in December 2019, which was to take place in September 2020 around the UK - starting with two nights at The O2 in London, then calling at Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bournemouth. Unfortunately, dates of his tour were rescheduled due to the pandemic. On the more positive side, Stormzy won British Male Solo Artist at the BRITs 2020, as well as three other nominations, and gave an incredible 10-minute performance with Burna Boy of 'Don't Forget to Breathe', 'Wiley Flow', 'Own It' and 'Rainfall'. The rapper and singer spent time in 2020 being charitable, working with a scheme to give a young fan a bedroom makeover , as well as surprising him in a heartfelt video. Stormzy was also announced to appear on the soundtrack for NBA video game NBA 2K21 with his song 'Bronze' from album 'Heavy is the Head'.

2021: Madame Tussauds waxwork

On 26th July 2021, in celebration of the rapper's 28th birthday, it was announced that he would be getting his very own waxwork at Madame Tussauds London , joining their star-studded summer line-up.

2022: 'Heavy Is The Head' Tour

Stormzy headed on tour around the UK supporting his 2019 album 'Heavy Is The Head'. Following his residency at London's O2 Arena, which covered March 27th, 28th and 29th, the tour - which is the rapper's biggest to date - wrapped up on 3rd April 2022. The tour was his biggest yet and also saw him perform in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Liverpool. Stormzy's sister Rachael Anson was the supporting act for the tour and played a DJ setlist to open his shows.

2022: Met Gala debut

Stormzy made his debut at the prestigious Met Gala where the theme was White Tie. Suiting up in the spirit of the dress code, the rapper wore an all-white Burberry three-piece wool suit complete with satin lapels. Also adding to the outfit was an impressive matching white cape designed by Riccardo Tisci.

2022: Honorary degree

Stormzy was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Exeter - he is now a doctor! In his acceptance speech, he told of his experience taking his AS Levels. He said he was "extremely blessed and grateful".

2022: Third album announced

Big Mike announced his highly-anticipated third album 'This Is What I Mean' in October 2022, revealing the track list AND that it would be coming just a month later in November.

2022: British GQ Men of the Year cover star

Stormzy appeared as the cover star of British GQ's Men of the Year edition , a hugely prestigious title. In his profile interview, he spoke about how he views success differently now he's older: "My version of success now requires a man: not just more music and more money. Now it means taking care of my family, having children, having a wife, even understanding marriage and raising kids, and that requires a man."

2023: Stormzy was nominated for three BRIT Awards

In January 2023, Stormzy picked up three BRIT Award nominations including ones for: Mastercard Album of The Year, Artist of The Year and Hip Hop, Grime and Rap act. Although he lost to Harry Styles twice and Aitch, he gave an incredible performance at the event.

2023: 'The Weekend' with RAYE

In July 2023, Stormzy teamed up with RAYE on 'The Weekend'. The track is accompanied by an official music video and combines Stormzy's rap and RAYE's soulful vocals.

2024: Sixth MOBO Award win

Stormzy took home his sixth MOBO Award at the ceremony in February 2024, taking home the Video of the Year gong for 'Mel Made Me Do It' and tying him Central Cee for the most awarded rapper in MOBOs history. Although he couldn't be there in person, he sent a message of thanks in which he said he was "honoured" and that the video was a "piece of art" for all involved in the making of the video.

2024: MerkyFC HQ launch

In May 2024, Stormzy shared the exciting news that he, along with Adidas, were opening the brand new MerkyFC HQ in Croydon. He wrote: 'Excited to finally announce a very special project that myself and Adidas have been working on for the past 3 years. The brand new #MerkyFC HQ in Croydon - A new multi-purpose centre providing opportunities for young Londoners across football, music and gaming. 'Don't wanna get too emotional but it means the world to be able to build something in my hometown that can serve the community and be a place for opportunity, education, fun and of course football. 'We are open from tomorrow - Visit merkyfchq.com to find out more about how you can get involved! #MerkyFC HQ . TO GOD BE THE GLORY! 🙏🏿❤️'. Stormzy and Adidas' Merky FC initiative was first announced in 2023, providing 15 you black people with jobs in the industry - with the rapper revealing that in 2024, he wants to go bigger, with 50 roles available.

2024: F1 British Grand Prix performance

In July 2024, Stormzy performed to the British Grand Prix crowd as a headline act, taking to the main stage as part of the weekend-long festival. The performance served as Stormzy's debut Silverstone appearance, as well as his second live show in the UK in 2024. Ahead of the big race, the rapper took to the stage on Friday 5th July, with his then-girlfriend Maya Jama there supporting him. Sadly, the couple announced they had split less than two weeks later in a joint statement, explaining that they had tried again following their original relationship that ended in 2019.

What did Stormzy do before he was famous?

Before he was famous, Stormzy was a road rap MC, telling Complex: "When I started, everyone was a grime spitter. There were no rappers on the ends. There was none of that! Everyone was just spitting grime, and then this UK rap scene came about. For a long time, though, I didn't get the whole road rap thing. I thought it was too slow, and sounded too American."

He went on to say: "But I felt like I needed to adapt to it and I needed to jump on it because that's what was happening. I'll be honest about that. There were grime MCs, but there was no one really popping off, and UK rap was heavily popping around those times. So I started rapping. It took me a bit to get into it; I couldn't slow it down as much because I was a proper grime kid."

How many A* grades did Stormzy get?

Stormzy got six A* GCSEs. Pretty impressive!

In October 2021, Stormzy confirmed that he had rescheduled his tour dates in support of his 2019 album ' Heavy Is The Head '. The grime artist finally confirmed the new dates on 19th October 2021 and confirmed that extra tickets would also be on sale.

The tour was his biggest yet and included three nights at London’s O2 Arena, as well as shows in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Liverpool. The new dates of the tour meant he began on Sunday 13th March at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, and ended on Monday 4th April at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow.

His three-night residency at London’s O2 Arena covered 27th, 28th and 29th March.

Will Celine Dion perform at the 2024 Olympics? What to know about her health condition

  • Fans speculate that the legendary singer could take the stage for the first time in years following her health challenges.
  • The singer, 56, has detailed her struggle with stiff person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that affected her singing abilities.
  • Dion is rumored to perform at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Celine Dion arrived in Paris yesterday ahead of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony , and rumor has it that she's performing.

Speculations swirled as the legendary singer, 56, greeted fans outside of a hotel in Paris . Fans suspect that she will perform at the opening ceremony, the first time she would be taking the stage in years following her December 2022 diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here's what we know about Dion's struggles with stiff person syndrome, the rumors of her Olympics performance, and her awards and career highlights.

When was the last time Celine Dion performed in concert?

Dion canceled the remainder of her 2023-24 "Courage" world tour in May 2023, roughly six months after she shared her stiff person syndrome diagnosis, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

The "Courage" tour spanned multiple years, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused many shows to be canceled.

"I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%," the singer told her fans, per THR.

How stiff person syndrome affected Celine Dion's singing

The rare autoimmune neurological disorder impacts muscles, movement, and in Dion's case, her singing abilities, according to Healthline .

"It's like somebody is strangling you," Dion told NBC when describing the condition. She added that her symptoms started in her throat and also affect her upper body muscles.

Her documentary, " I Am: Celine Dion ," details the struggles of living with stiff person syndrome, which often comes with painful spasms and muscle stiffness. The condition has no known cure, but there are treatments available to maintain quality of life.

Will Celine Dion perform at the Olympics?

According to NBC , the music icon is still determined to one day return to the stage, but whether that will happen this week at the Olympics remains uncertain.

"I'm going to go back on stage, even if I have to crawl. Even if I have to talk with my hands. I will," the singer told NBC. "I am Céline Dion because today, my voice will be heard for the first time — not just because I have to or because I need to. It's because I want to. And I miss it."

If Dion does perform at the Olympics this week, it is speculated she will sing “L’Hymne à l’amour” by Édith Piaf, according to French newspaper  Le Parisien .

How many Grammy Awards does Celine Dion have? Did she win an Oscar for 'Titanic?'

The highly accomplished singer has won five Grammy Awards and has been nominated 16 times. She won best female pop vocal performance and record of the year for her "Titanic" movie theme song "My Heart Will Go On," which remains a beloved classic among fans.

Dion did not take home an Academy Award for her "My Heart Will Go On" performance, but the song won an Oscar for best original song.

Dion has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, making her one of the top-selling recording artists of all time.
