The Darkness

The darkness @ rock city, nottingham, uk, december 15, 2023,.

The early 2000s were a bleak time for rock and music in general. As the last dregs of Britpop morphed into non-descript indie dullardry while the heavier side of rock became nu-metal, a band like The Darkness were a breath of fresh air when they emerged at the tail of end 2002. For all their glam rock/80s hair metal reference points, they had the necessary charisma in spades not to mention a bucketful of accessible tunes with widespread appeal not only for the rock and metal scenes, but also far beyond that as well. So, it came as no real surprise when debut album Permission To Land dropped the following year it became one of the biggest selling records of the decade even if its creators’ time in the spotlight was as short lived as their emergence was meteoric.

Founded in the Suffolk market town of Lowestoft a couple of years earlier by brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins, The Darkness might have been a throwback to the over-dramatic pomp of bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin in their heydays, but their “couldn’t care less” attitude coupled with an excessive nature made us believe that rock music could be exciting again, if only for twelve very short months. Since then, The Darkness story probably has more downs than ups yet in that time they’ve still managed to release to varying critical acclaim and commercial success, while also retaining an omnipotent yet supremely loyal fanbase as the “sold out” signs greeting every show on this celebratory tour ably demonstrates.

Playing a bunch of shows just before Christmas to commemorate the 20th anniversary of an album many outsiders will have forgotten about by the turn of 2004 might not have been the wisest move in many people’s eyes, but looking around the jam-packed room at this first of two sold out shows at Nottingham’s Rock City tells its own story. Having first witnessed The Darkness’ live show at this very same venue back in October 2003, it’s testament to the timeless nature of their music that several attendees from that night are also in attendance this evening.

Interestingly, as the four-piece come onto the stage, original bass player Frankie Poullain and more recent acquisition Rufus Taylor on drums joining the Hawkins brothers on stage. Frontman Justin finishes opening number “Black Shuck” by addressing the crowd and urging to put their phones away for the evening. While the majority observe his request, one unlucky punter that chooses to continually use their phone has it confiscated by Hawkins mid crowdsurf only for him to then to proceed in rubbing it down his crotch for the duration of the next song! It certainly made a change to see so many people enjoying the show by living in the moment rather than jostling for camera angles.

the darkness tour rock city

With all of tonight’s set focused on the Permission To Land era, it was a pleasant surprise to hear some of the b-sides from that period given a run-out this evening. “The Best Of Me” and “Makin’ Out”, taken from the “Get Your Hands Off My Woman” and “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” singles respectively provided a welcome interlude from reeling off the album in chronological order, while “Growing On Me” flipside “How Dare You Call This Love?” made a welcome interjection before Hawkins and co. performed their take on Radiohead’s “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” which was almost as good as the original.

Unsurprisingly, the big singles received the biggest response. “Get Your Hands Off My Woman” and “Growing On Me” both despatched early - the former preceded by Justin Hawkins introducing himself to every photographer in the pit - while midset staple “Love Is Only A Feeling” may not have featured Ed Sheeran as a special guest this evening as it did in London, but was no less potent all the same. “Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)” and “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” - arguably the band’s two most recognisable songs - brought the first set to a climactic end, punctuated in between by a note perfect rendition of Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song”.

the darkness tour rock city

While another b-side “I Love You 5 Times” opens the encore before giving way to a near fifteen minutes rendition of “Love On The Rocks With No Ice” including Justin Hawkins being carried around the entire room on the shoulders of a security guard while performing an elongated solo. As live performances go, The Darkness are still out on their own when it comes to entertaining an audience and if the second night next Tuesday is anywhere near as good as this, the good folk of Nottingham won’t know what’s hit them!

Phones, Crowd Surfing, and Encore Antics: The Unforgettable Night with The Darkness. Rock City Gig Review.

Two decades after “Permission to Land” first graced our eardrums, I still vividly recall my Darkness JFK moment when I first heard “I believe in a thing called love” on the late Janice Long’s show on Radio 2. Long was always a champion of new music, and she was raving about this song, a few months later, excitedly announcing a new Christmas song by The Darkness that she deemed brilliant. As it turns out, she wasn’t wrong, and all these years later, The Darkness continues to captivate.

I remember witnessing them fill stadiums, and then, after what seemed like the end, seeing Justin’s new band, Hot Leg, in a small club in Derby. Fortunately, Justin got his shit together, and The Darkness was reborn.

On the plus side, this meant we got to see them perform at great venues like Rock City once more. Judging by the success of this tour, we might find ourselves back in stadiums next year.

Dressed in spandex and Christmas suits, the crowd showcased a fashion sense as eclectic as The Darkness’ discography. As the band burst onto the stage with “Black Shuck,” the audience’s hands shot up.

The Darkness

This was followed by “Get Your Hands Off My Woman.” Justin attempted his usual leg clapping from the drum riser but quickly realized there was no room. “I’m going for a swim,” he said and dove into the audience.

The Darkness

Ever the showman, Justin reminisced about Rock City’s legendary floor, now a relic in his bedroom arsenal for impressing the ladies. “Making sure the audience was not slacking,” Justin declared, “You are watching The Darkness, not Coldplay.”

“Dancing on a Friday Night” turned into a massive sing-along, with Justin taking a rare backseat as the crowd owned every lyric. And let’s not forget the first-ever Darkness crowd surfing; now that’s a first for this band.

The Darkness

A young man named Conall was caught by Justin filming the show on his phone, despite Justin’s earlier plea to put away phones. Justin came down, took the phone from him, and slipped it into the front of his pants. The phone was still recording, after the next song, he handed it back, not before cleaning it on his bum.

When it came time for the encore, they all came back on stage wearing dressing gowns and PJs. They mixed it up a little, with Rufus on bass and Dan on drums playing “I Love You 5 Times.”

The night climaxed with a call-and-response session during “Love on the Rocks” and Justin’s Angus Young-inspired journey through the crowd on a brave soul’s shoulders.

What a night! You still have a chance to catch this show, so don’t miss out. They are even back at Rock City on Tuesday.

At The Barrier

Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, the darkness – nottingham rock city: live review.

The Darkness – Nottingham Rock City – 19th December 2023

The Darkness

Gimme a D! Gimme an ARKNESS! What does it spell?! The Darkness land in Nottingham in celebratory mood.

In 2003 Permission To Land stormed to the top of the UK Albums chart, where it remained for four weeks. The smash hit singles I Believe In A Thing Called Love and Love Is Only A Feeling turned The Darkness into international superstars; seemingly overnight…

At the height of their fame in 2006, shortly after the release of One Way Ticket To Hell… And Back, the band split and fell off the music radar… seemingly forgotten. Since 2011 the band has been on the comeback trail and trying to recapture former glories. Now, 20 years on from their platinum-selling debut The Darkness, with the addition of music royalty in the form of Rufus Taylor on drums, look and sound better than ever.

In support of the main act of the night is Bad Nerves. They’re a five-piece band from Essex, full of punk angst. They power through a 30-minute set crammed with fast and furious two-minute songs. Their songs and musicianship are a bit messy, but that’s pop-punk, and they lack nothing in terms of volume, or passion. They’re confident and have style to burn.

The Darkness are musical genius. Their sound and style is all old school rock ‘n’ roll borrowing from the likes of Queen, Van Halen and Thin Lizzy and of course, they dress the part as well. Justin Hawkins in a red spandex jumpsuit with matching guitar, his brother Dan less colourful but no less cool. Bassist Frankie Poullain, with his big hair and sharp suit, looks like he should be playing for The Zutons.

The Darkness

As this is a 20 th anniversary show, the crowd know The Darkness will be playing the entirety of the Permission To Land album, plus B-sides. Black Shuck, a song about a demon dog that roams Norfolk is first on the set list quickly followed by Get Your Hands Off My Woman and Growing On Me. The Darkness have lost none of their passion for this material, and neither have the fans. When they get to Love Is Only A Feeling the crowd claps and sways along in time to the music and enjoy a singalong, led by Poullain.

The Darkness have no business playing at Rock City, they should be playing sold-out arenas. That’s how good they are. But you know what? The Darkness belongs at Rock City, the venue that Justin Hawkins credits as being “ the best in the country .” If you’ve got two sold out nights playing to a combined total of 5,000 screaming fans at Rock City why would you want to play in a soulless arena? This is the best gig I’ve ever seen at Rock City and the most engaged that I’ve ever seen a crowd.

Justin Hawkins is in a band with his brother and his two best mates doing rock and roll. He’s got the whole of Rock City eating out of his hand… and every inch of you… you know he’s going to work it. The Darkness create joyful songs with humorous lyrics, on a solid bedrock of 70s-styled hard rock. They may appear at times to be jokers. But they’re deadly serious, talented musicians, that have worked hard to achieve success. And they deserve it all.

Friday Night really gets the crowd going and it’s something of a surprise that this song means so much to people. Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End) gives everything a festive feel, before The Darkness perform I Believe In A Thing Called Love which Hawkins describes as their “ most famous song ” to complete the main set.

A two song encore sees the band swapping instruments to play I Love You 5 Times. An evening of high energy, full commitment rock ‘n’ roll, ends with Love on the Rocks With No Ice; one of the finest cuts on Permission To Land.

The Darkness are on an upward trajectory that shows no signs of stopping. This tour has been hugely successful selling out venues across the country every night. It will surely lead to the sold-out arenas that the band so clearly crave. I wouldn’t bet against them.

Review by Pete Finn for MPM

On opening door number 13 of the Metal Planet Music advent calendar, I find a couple of tickets for The Darkness with Massive Wagons at Rock City.

Two bands with arguably two of the most charismatic and dynamic frontmen on the road, in Justin Hawkins and Baz Mills. So MPM Tog Manny and I are heading to Nottingham.

I don’t expect to see any Pantomime Villains tonight, but plenty of festive cheer and party tunes. Arriving at the bar, I find out that there is a ‘The Darkness’ beer available, so it is a diet coke for Manny, and a can of ‘Bells End’ for me, the bar staff have been told to tip it quickly, so you “get a good head”…at £4.80 it had better be.

An aptly dark ale, it was OK. But, £4.80 for a 330ml can…ouch.

Massive Wagons are Baz Mills (vocals), Adam Thistlewaite (guitar), Alex Thistlewaite (drums), Adam ‘Bowzer’ Bouskill (bass) and Stevie Holl (guitar). Now, I’ve never heard it confirmed or denied for that matter, that the band name originated from an attribute of the barmaid in their local boozer.

the darkness tour rock city

They have been at the forefront of the New Wave of Classic Rock genre from the offset, supporting and promoting it in many ways, including a ‘Band Aid’ style version of their own monster track ‘Tokyo’. I’ve been fortunate to see Massive Wagons many times, including this September when they closed out the Rockin’ The Bowl Festival with an absolutely storming show. They have five successful albums under their belt, so have a good back catalogue to go at.

the darkness tour rock city

With 20 minutes to go the hall is 75% full, and as the lights go out the hall has filled completely. Another respectful showing from the Rock City fans.

Massive Wagons introduce themselves to Rock City with the fast paced ‘Fee Fi Fo Fum’, from ‘Welcome to The World’ they instantly have the crowd jumping, Bowzer’s bass is shaking the room like giants footsteps on the roof, Baz in his Dennis The Menace top is stood on a monitor, mic stand in the air. Jack and The Beanstalk lyrics, very fitting.

the darkness tour rock city

No pausing, and it’s ‘In It Together’ the opening track from their latest album ‘House of Noise’ a riff laden anthem, with clever and personal lyrics, we get to join in with the ‘Wo-ahs’. The energy within the band is tremendous, the crowd are loving it.

Watching and listening to Barry Mills, I’m thinking that if Dave Lee Roth and Noddy Holder were to have a ‘Love Child’ it would probably grow up to be Baz. ‘China Plates’ from their well acclaimed 2018 album ‘Full Nelson’ is about society’s obsession with Social Media, and how the posts are interpreted, this is a high-octane track with intense lead breaks and thunderous drums from the Thistlewaite brothers, the end has Baz pointing at the crowd, “You, You, You”.

the darkness tour rock city

We revisit the new album for ‘Pressure’ this is hard hitting, brash with a punky tempo track, and sharp vocals. The guitar work from Holl and Thistlewaite is incredible. The sound and power of Bowzer’s bass is phenomenal, it feels like someone is dancing on your chest. A huge cheer from the crowd shows their appreciation.

the darkness tour rock city

Baz asks, “So far, so good Nottingham?” the answer is a unanimous “Yes”. The immediately recognisable riff introduces the second single from ‘House of Noise’, ‘Bangin’ In Your Stereo’ Alex’s pounding drum and Baz’s clever lyrics, this track has the Rock City faithful reaching for their air guitars, middle fingers are raised in time with the lyric, it concludes with a medley of The Clash’s ‘I Fought The Law’ and Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’.

the darkness tour rock city

Baz wants to know how many people have seen ‘The Wagons’ before, the show of hands gives a 50/50 split, judging by the crowd in tonight, we’ll all make the effort to see them again. The driving guitars and drums of ‘Ratio’ rip through the hall, a slower beat filled track.

The heads are nodding and feet stomping along. Baz’s head flicks are choreographed with Adam’s riffs to the note. The final song is the wonderful tribute to Status Quo’s Rick Parfitt, ‘Back to The Stack’, the band line up for the start in the iconic Quo line. The crowd bounce the whole way through, glasses (mostly empty by now) are raised aloft. Baz patrols the stage with his mic stand above his head, looking a bit like a Dalek.

the darkness tour rock city

Massive Wagons performance was way more than a ‘warm up’ act, it was a, cooked in the ‘flames of a fire pit’ act. Awesome.

Setlist: Fee Fi Fo Fum; In It Together; China Plates; Pressure; Bangin’ In Your Stereo (Medley); Back to The Stack

Originating from Lowestoft and formed way back in 2000, having recorded an impressive seven studio albums, all of which have made the Top 20 including a number 1, The Darkness have become one of the mainstays of British Rock, this band are well loved, and every rock fan can name some of The Darkness’ tracks. The current line-up which has been together since 2015 has Justin Hawkins (vocals/guitar/keys), Dan Hawkins (guitar), Frankie Poullain (bass) and Rufus Taylor (drums) This set of 22 dates is to promote their new album ‘Motorheart’ released last month.

the darkness tour rock city

Arriving on stage to the sound of bagpipes, Justin Hawkins sporting a leather and chain cap and leather waistcoat looking a lot like the 70’s Kenny Everett’s character ‘Sid Snot’. Their first offering is ‘Welcome Tae Glasgae’ from ‘Motorheart’, apparently as the tour bus arrives in Glasgow one of their favourite places to play, the band shout out ‘Welcome Tae Glasgae’ a short drum and riff laden track with a suitable ‘Highland Fling’ sound.

the darkness tour rock city

Next up are a couple of The Darkness classics ‘One Way Ticket’ the title track from their 2005 album, Justin has ditched the cap, he starts the clapping and bouncing, the audience take on the lead vocals. Then from the debut 2003 album ‘Permission to Land’, ‘Growing on Me’, Justin’s shirt is off too, a tide of fist pumps ripple across the masses. I look around the crowd and everyone is either singing along, pogo-ing or both…an indication of why the famous Rock City floor is so sticky. The brothers have a synchronized leap from the drum riser to finish.

Now it’s time for the title track of the new album ‘Motorheart’, a fabulous song about a sex robot, a mix of tempos and riffs, some real heavy riffs and a magnificent Hawkins solo, Justin’s trademark pitch is exchanged briefly mid track as he narrates the reason why he bought her.

the darkness tour rock city

Elliot (apologies if this is wrong, it was hard to make out the name) appears on stage playing the cowbell, Rufus is off his stool as he hits the skins and cymbals. This track has everything, it’s a bit Motorhead, a bit Sabbath, utterly brilliant. ‘Open Fire’ taken from ‘The Last of Our Kind’, this has a jangly guitar sound a bit Big Country/Simple Minds running in the background then neatly laid over the top is a full-on rock track. Frankie is strutting the stage grinning and nodding at the crowd. Justin is windmilling his guitar like Pete Townshend.

Justin thanks the Rock City crowd, it was the first date on this tour to sell out, Nottingham is his new “Forever” home. We return to the new album for ‘Sticky Situations’, a slower number with Justin’s voice being quietly accompanied with harmonies. Ian (I think that’s what Justin called him) is strumming an acoustic guitar, giving the track some softness. Time for us to raise our swaying arms.

the darkness tour rock city

We jump back to the first album with ‘Givin’ Up’, the crowd have taken over the vocals for the chorus as Justin points his mic at the audience, the band are smiling, we’re all enjoying this one. Travelling from one end of The Darkness’s timeline to the other, from the latest album ‘It’s Love, Jim’, with a less than subtle nod to the iconic space travel adventures of ‘Star Trek’, it’s a track about an intimate encounter with an alien, superb, maximum points for originality.

This is a full assault on your body, the riffs and drums are powerful enough to launch the whole of Rock City into space, Justin’s vocals are warp speed. The stage is all flashing red and blue lights, just like the scene of a major incident. This track was over far too quickly.

Frankie has changed out of his leather bikers’ jacket, and is now in a sort of leopard print smoking jacket, pinched from Hugh Hefner’s wardrobe maybe? ‘Black Shuck’ in English Folklore is the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.

the darkness tour rock city

Racing guitars, thudding bass and Justin’s ferocious vocal bring this beast to life. ‘Heart Explodes’ we clap this one in, a ballad about a breakup, then trying to repair and reconcile from the 2019 release ‘Easter Is Cancelled’. Ian is back on the acoustic, Hawkins voice is reflective and emotional, with Taylor, Poullain, and Hawkins musicianship supporting and understanding. We clap ‘Radio Ga-Ga’ style to the end.

“For a Monday night, this is absolutely fucking brilliant” a smiling Justin says to the crowd. We’re teased into serenading the intro for ‘Friday Night’ from the first album. This has a happy bouncy feel, with a prominent guitar, a real feel-good sound. The glitter ball is lit up, ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’ has the band in a philosophical mood, the sound is a bit ‘Highlands of Scotland’ but, includes a series of elaborate Justin Hawkins lead breaks that keeps the sentiment honest.

the darkness tour rock city

His brother, playing his guitar held high, with the headstock kissing the ceiling. We charge head on into ‘Japanese Prisoner of Love’ this is a no-nonsense rock track, with tempo changes, crashing drums, balanced harmonies, guitar riffs and solo’s and thumping bass. Everything is excessive, I loved it.

There’s no doubt which track is next as the stage is bathed in gold light. ‘Solid Gold’ another from the 2017 album ‘Pinewood Smile’, straight from Dan Hawkins’ riff intro, his brother is strutting around the stage leading the crowd in their hand clapping.

the darkness tour rock city

Eastbound’ from the new album, is a more melodic track, with a comforting guitar sound, the vocal changes as Justin narrates the lyrics, a shattering drum roll signifies the end of the narration and we’re back to some good old-fashioned rock. The stage lighting turns blood red, ‘Barbarian’ has a lashing Frankie Poullain intro, and his bass skills are evident throughout, the chorus has Justin yodelling like Thijs Van Leer from Focus. This gets a big mosh pit started.

‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’ was the band’s first single in 2003, anyone who had any beer left in their plastic glass launches it, the room rises as one, everyone is jumping up and down, the place has just exploded. Confetti from a previous event is shaken from the overhead lights.

the darkness tour rock city

Get your hands where I can see them” screams Justin. There’s no stopping, it’s ‘I Believe in A Thing Called Love’ which has an amazing 162 Million plays on Spotify, this is a legend. Justin calls a stop a few minutes in, there’s too many phones out, “watch the band with your eyes not with a lens, you don’t know what’s going to happen, enjoy tonight it’s could be the last time for a while” we resume, there’s a great guitar sound all the way through. We clap, we sing along, we cheer, we bounce. The Rock City floor flexes. The band leave the stage with the glitter ball spinning. Two exceptional tracks to close the set.

We wait, the crowd chanting “we want more” and “Darkness, Darkness”. We still wait…When they return, we see why the wait was long, Rufus is dressed as a Christmas tree, Justin and Ian as Santa, Dan is wearing a Christmas jumper, Elliot is dressed as a lobster?? I have absolutely no idea what Frankie is dressed as…

the darkness tour rock city

The encore brings out the Christmas Selection box, first out is a short rendition of ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ including the line ‘logs on the fire and pissing on the tree’. Then a version of Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’. Justin tells us that Gary Barlow is at the nearby Nottingham Arena tonight, he has a tongue-in-cheek dig at playing one of his songs before giving up, everyone is glad. The show finale is the very apt ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End)’, hands and arms swaying. ‘Snow’ falls from the ceiling. The crowd show their gratitude, long after the band has left the stage.

the darkness tour rock city

There is absolutely no doubt that we have been to a Darkness show, it certainly wasn’t a Christmas Pantomime, but it has a lot of similarities, crazy, unpredictable, fun, silly, over the top and most of all a fantastic evening’s entertainment performed by a cast that gave everything.

The Darkness Announce 20th Anniversary ‘Permission to Land’ Tour for 2023

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of their hit album  Permission to Land , The Darkness have just announced a headlining North American tour in October.

Released in 2003, The Darkness' debut album was a big commercial success, largely thanks to the smash single "I Believe In a Thing Called Love," which peaked at No. 35 on Billboard's US Mainstream Top 40 chart.

Fans can expect to see the band perform all 11 songs off  Permission to Land , as well as additional cuts from their other six albums, the latest being 2021's  Motorheart .

“When Permission to Land landed 20 short years ago, we were bathed in shock and awe," comments frontman Justin Hawkins , "As if by magic, rock wasn’t dead! Fun wasn’t banned! And Spandex was almost acceptable again…Well, guess what? Twenty years on, the same rules apply. So please to squeeze yourselves into those inappropriate leggings, back-comb your mullet, splash on a big handful of attitude, and come celebrate with us! This year finds Britain’s beloved rock band THE DARKNESS  – singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins, guitarist Dan Hawkins, bassist Frankie Poullain, drummer Rufus Taylor – celebrating 20 years since they birthed Permission To Land, the multi-platinum, chart-topping debut album that changed the face of rock music forever. To celebrate the landmark occasion, The Darkness will embark on the global Permission To Land 20 tour, with North American dates kicking off on October 3rd in San Francisco and wrapping on October 22nd in Washington, D.C. Tickets here

Frontman Justin Hawkins shares, “When Permission to Land landed, twenty short years ago, we were bathed in shock and awe. As if by magic, Rock wasn’t dead! Fun wasn’t banned! And Spandex was almost acceptable again…Well, guess what? Twenty years on, the same rules apply. So please to squeeze yourselves into those inappropriate leggings, back-comb your mullet, splash on a big handful of attitude, and come celebrate with us! We promise everything and we deliver, every time. Bring on the next twenty! The Darkness. The best. For you. Forever.”

The shows promise to be a grand spectacle with the band playing the much-lauded, award-winning, foot-stomping, guitar-wailing, groove-making masterpiece in full. Kicking off with the splendid rifferama of “Black Shuck” they’ll blast their way through all of Permission To Land’s eleven tracks, including “Growing On Me,” “Love Is Only A Feeling,” “Giving Up,” “Love On The Rocks With No Ice,” “Get Your Hands Off My Woman” and of course the iconic “I Believe In A Thing Called Love.”

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse you can see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 7, 2024 / 7:29 PM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse crosses North America on April 8, 2024, with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans can see the big event .

The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then travel across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon will fully block out the sun , according to NASA. The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse will start over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT on April 8, according to NASA. From there, the path will continue into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse will exit continental North America around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality includes the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. are included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others will see a partial eclipse. Here are some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — if the weather cooperates :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse will reach totality across the path

Eclipse map of totality

The eclipse will begin in the U.S. on the afternoon of April 8. It will first be visible as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and progressing along its path to the northeast over the next few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. You can also  check your ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse will reach you if you're on, or near, the path of totality.

How much of the eclipse will you see if you live outside of the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse will cover a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may spot a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer you are to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that will be hidden.

NASA allows viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun will be covered in their location.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality have a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You can check the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where will the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, will get to experience totality for the longest. Totality there will last 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes long, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. come close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, will have a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

After the April 8 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse than the upcoming one on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse, but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

the darkness tour rock city

Come Monday, millions of Americans from Texas to Maine will stop what they're doing to step outside and spend a few minutes gazing skyward .

Few celestial events have the power to capture our collective attention the way this upcoming total solar eclipse has managed to do. And for those making time to witness it, two questions are bound to be on their mind : Will totality reach my area and if so, how long will the resulting darkness last?

Most people across the country are bound to experience the eclipse in some form, but only 13 states fall directly on the path of totality, where the moon will appear large enough to shield all but the sun's outermost layer, the corona.

As you make your eclipse-viewing plans, these interactive maps should help you chart the time and duration for when totality will occur in cities along the path.

Solar eclipse experiment: Here's why NASA is launching 3 sounding rockets into space during the total solar eclipse

Total solar eclipse path of totality map

The 115-mile-wide path of totality will pass from southwest to northeast over portions of Mexico the United States and Canada.

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine.

Remember: If you plan to witness the eclipse, proper eyewear is a must until the eclipse reaches totality, then it can be viewed with the naked eye.

Here's a map of some of the larger cities in each of the 13 states on the path to show how the duration of totality will vary:

Cities, states on the path of totality

All told, nearly 500 cities in 13 U.S. states are located on the eclipse's path of totality. Here are some of the major cities in each of the 13 states:

  • Dallas and San Antonio, Texas
  • Idabel, Oklahoma
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Paducah, Kentucky
  • Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio
  • Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire
  • Caribou, Maine
  • Erie, Pennsylvania

This interactive map provides a closer look at cities along the path, when totality will arrive there and how long totality will last:

Eclipse watch parties, festivals

Such a rare event is sure to attract skygazing tourists unlucky enough to live outside the path of totality. Fortunately, many cities that will experience the total eclipse are planning plenty of festivities for tourists and locals alike.

This map , courtesy of Kristian Campana at festivalguidesandreviews.com , includes locations of watch parties, music festivals and more all tied to the eclipse's arrival:

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, Solar Eyeglasses suggests wearing green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Dress for the Occasion:  What should you wear for the eclipse? Our fashion critic weighs the options , including an unexpected suggestion from scientists.

Free to View:  Six inmates in upstate New York prisons who sued the state won their lawsuit to view the eclipse , arguing it “is a religious event.” But a statewide prison lockdown during the eclipse will remain in place.

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Sky-High Hotel Prices: One Super 8 hotel in the eclipse’s path is charging $949 a night . Its normal rate is $95.

Animal Reactions : Researchers will watch if animals at zoos, homes and farms act strangely  when day quickly turns to night.

A Rare Return:  A total solar eclipse happens twice in the same place every 366 years on average. But people in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
