Main Outcome:

Persuasive letter

15 sessions, 3 weeks

Overview and Outcomes:

This is a three-week Writing Root for The Journey Home  by Frann Preston-Gannon. The text explores issues of conservation and starts to explore whether we can escape the issues that endangered animals face on a day-to-day basis. Children create fact files on endangered animals as well writing short persuasive pieces on why we need to save a particular endangered animal. Children will be able to identify how a sentence is formed by its grammatical structure as a question, a command, a statement or an exclamation. Children will be encouraged to edit work, being aware of tense and word choice. Word classes (nouns/verbs/adjectives) will be referred to throughout.

Synopsis of Text:

The ice is melting so Polar Bear sets off in search of a new home. Join him on his adventures across the seas and discover the many friends he meets along the way. This beautifully illustrated story has a powerful message of conservation and is full of things for parents and children to talk about. Frann was the winner of an amazing Sendak Fellowship and spent a month living with the great Maurice Sendak himself at his home in Connecticut, USA. She worked on The Journey Home during her stay there.

Text Rationale:

This beautifully illustrated book tells the poignant story of a group of animals who set out to look for new habitats. This text is a powerful springboard into discussions about global warming, the environment and conservation with children – it is a call to action. This text can be accompanied by There’s a Rang-Tan in My Bedroom by the same author. Frann Preston-Gannon is a prolific and significant author-illustrator who has won many awards, including the ‘Sendak Fellowship’ and was able to spend a month learning from the great Maurice Sendak.

Hiker who found two-year-old's skull recalls 'terrifying' journey carrying it home

Emile, two, had been missing from a village in the french alps for eight months when a woman found his remains while walking in the region..

Wednesday 10 April 2024 12:21, UK

A hiker who found the remains of a missing two-year-old has recalled carrying his skull home under her arm "because feeling it touching my skin terrified me".

The woman, who goes by the name of Manon in a new interview, found the skull of a toddler known as Emile during a walk near Le Vernet in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France, in March.

Manon told French broadcaster BFM TV that she goes for a walk without a mobile phone every day and was on a route she hadn't taken "for a long time" when she made the discovery.

The skull was "white" and "completely clean", she said, with only the top teeth in place.

"I could have left it, but if I returned it might not have been there," she told French broadcaster BFM TV. "Because of that I picked it up, I know that on windy days like this, if you wait, the mountain isn't the same anymore."

Manon made sure she had a point of reference in order to show police where she made the discovery and noted a nearby tree collapsed on its side.

"I was running, I wanted to rush," she said of her journey home. "I said to myself, 'quickly, quickly, quickly - I have to pick up this thing and the police are going to find the culprit… the investigation is finally going to move on'.

"The whole journey, I carried this thing under my arm because feeling it touching my skin terrified me."

Bringing the skull into her home was "inconceivable", Manon said - so she called the police who came to collect it.

"Everything went well, they were doing their job," she said. "I answered their questions and that was it."

Manon has not gone for a walk since.

Genetic testing confirmed her suspicion that the skull belonged to the two-year-old, whose disappearance was well-publicised last year.

Marks found on the skull could have been caused by animals after the boy died, prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon said last week. The cause of death is yet to be identified.

Following the discovery of the bones, some of Emile's clothes - including a T-shirt, shoes and shorts - were found close by , it was previously reported.

The two-year-old went missing in the French Alps last summer. He was last seen walking down a street near his grandparents' house on 8 July.

He was staying with his maternal grandparents in a remote mountain village just outside Le Vernet for the holidays.

They realised Emile was gone when they went to put him in the car, the local mayor said at the time.

After beginning as a missing person investigation, the case soon became a criminal inquiry into a possible abduction, although police did not rule out murder, an accident or a fall.

Mayflower II will travel through Cape Cod Canal soon. Here's how you can track the ship.

the journey home story

As long as tides and weather cooperate, the Mayflower II will be homeward bound from the Mystic Seaport on April 10, setting off at about 10:30 a.m., according to the Plimoth Patuxet Museums .

For anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of the tall ship traversing the Cape Cod Canal on the way to her home berth alongside State Pier at Pilgrim Memorial State Park in Plymouth, her progress can be tracked by visiting www.tinyurl.com/trackMayflower2 , a service of marinetraffic.com.

Once it leaves the seaport, the Mayflower II will travel non-stop to Plymouth Harbor. The journey, approximately 78 miles, will take about 20 to 25 hours. It's possible its passage through the canal could begin in the early morning hours of April 11.

"We will give an ETA once the ship actually gets underway and we are better able to determine," said Plimoth Patuxet Director of Marketing & Communications Rob Kluin .

Although it may traverse the canal while it is still dark, with the lighting that exists along the waterway, spectators would still be able to see the ship as it passes through, according to Kluin. It will take the ship about an hour to traverse the canal.

The 102-foot wooden vessel will not be under sail — the sails have yet to be bent onto the yards, Kluin said — but will instead be towed the entire way by Stasinos Marine out of Weymouth, Kluin said. It will be crewed by the Plimoth Patuxet maritime preservation and operations team led by Capt. Whit Perry. They will not be in period costumes for the voyage.

The crew recently completed up-rigging the ship — putting up spars, blocks and rigging — in preparation for her trip home, according to a post on the Plimoth Patuxet Museums' Facebook page .

The 67-year-old ship, a full-scale reproduction of the vessel that brought the first European immigrants to the shores of Patuxet more than 400 years ago, has been in dry dock at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard in Mystic, Connecticut since arriving there Dec. 1. Over the winter, it underwent routine maintenance, including cleaning the bottom, painting and caulking the seams. The work was funded by a Save America's Treasures grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services .

The travel schedule is subject to change, depending on tide, weather and other factors. The Plimoth Patuxet Museums will also have updates on its Facebook page .

Mayflower II is slated to be open to the public at her Plymouth berth starting at 9 a.m. on April 13. According to Plimoth Patuxet Museums Executive Director Ellie Donovan, the ship has seen millions of visitors from around the world since it arrived in Plymouth as a gift to the museum from England in 1957.

“We are thankful for IMLS recognizing the importance of this treasured landmark and for helping to ensure she will be preserved for generations to come," Donovan said.

Who is Kato Kaelin? The Milwaukee native played a high-profile role in O.J. Simpson trial

the journey home story

Milwaukee native Brian "Kato" Kaelin, a Milwaukee native who became one of the most distinguishable personalities enmeshed in the landmark O.J. Simpson murder trial of 1994-95, became a household name to many across the state and country.

Simpson, who was acquitted of the charges of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman, died Wednesday at age 76.

Here's what to know about Kaelin, who was a witness in one of the biggest trials in American history:

Kato Kaelin was born in Milwaukee and attended Nicolet High School

Kaelin played multiple sports at Nicolet in Glendale, just north of Milwaukee. After graduating from Nicolet, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for two years as a speech major. According to an Associated Press article in 1995, his nickname stems from "The Green Hornet," which featured a limousine driver named Kato. Older brother Mark had an affinity for the television program and used the nickname to describe many of the six siblings in the house, but the nickname stuck to Brian.

Kaelin, an aspiring actor, had moved to Los Angeles at the time of the killings and was staying in a guest house on Simpson's Rockingham estate; he bore witness to some of Simpson's movements the night of June 12, 1994.

Kato Kaelin gave testimony at the Simpson trial, but was declared a hostile witness

Kaelin was with Simpson before and after the time it's believed Brown Simpson and Goldman were murdered. Some of his testimony contradicted Simpson's timeline of the night's events.

Kaelin befriended OJ and Nicole Simpson and was staying in their guest home, sometimes taking care of the couple's children for a reduction in rent. When Brown Simpson moved out of the home, Kaelin stayed and helped take care of the property, though Kaelin was often painted as a freeloader.

Kaelin testified he was with Simpson from about 9:15 to 9:45 p.m. June 12 on a run to McDonald's after Simpson was excluded from a family gathering at Mezzaluna restaurant following his daughter's dance recital. Kaelin didn't see Simpson again until Simpson left in a limousine for the airport at 11 p.m. The murders were believed to take place between 10 and 11 p.m. Goldman, a waiter at Mezzaluna, was returning a pair of glasses left by someone in the family party when he was killed.

Kaelin said he also heard a thumping sound outside his guest house around 10:40 p.m. and, while on the grounds looking for the source, opened the gate for limousine driver Allan Park, who was scheduled to give Simpson a ride to the airport at 10:45 p.m. but didn't get an answer from the house on an intercom.

More: I idolized O.J. Simpson as a kid. Later, I thought he got away with murder.

Park said he saw a 6-foot, 200-pound Black person enter the home, followed by a voice sounding like Simpson's on the intercom, indicating he had overslept and would be down shortly. Both Kaelin and Park testified Simpson wanted to personally load a dark duffle bag or knapsack into the limousine, refusing help from Kaelin.

But Kaelin also contradicted his own testimony at times and was categorized by the prosecution as a "hostile witness, " an unusual maneuver that allowed district attorney Marcia Clark to ask leading questions, much like a cross examination, on her own witness.

Kaelin's offbeat personality — and perhaps his flowing blonde hair — brought him to a strange brand of celebrity during the televised trial. Though the fame didn't lead to major acting roles, he has since made a number of TV appearances, most recently on "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2019 and an installment of the "Sharknado" franchise in 2018.

Kato Kaelin has said in recent years he believes Simpson was guilty

Kaelin has said in the intervening years that he believes Simpson indeed killed Brown and Goldman , even though he doesn't have firsthand knowledge.

In a heartfelt statement he posted to Instagram after Simpson's death, Kaelin offered sympathy to Simpson's children and expressed "love and compassion" for members of the Goldman family as well as the family of Nicole, "a beacon of light that burned bright."

His Wisconsin sports fandom has continued, and it's a wild journey

Kaelin's fandom of Milwaukee sports teams can be categorized as … passionate.

His messages posted to Twitter often illustrate the high-intensity emotion of sports fandom. Take this recent subset of examples:

Kaelin regularly attends Wisconsin sporting events both inside the state and when they come to California. He even won the 50/50 raffle at American Family Field in 2017.

Thinking about buying your first home? What to know before your home-buying journey begins

the journey home story

Buying a home is one of the biggest decisions a person or family can make. It's a huge responsibility that comes with lots of payments and lots of work.

Buying a home can also be a very complicated undertaking for those who aren't familiar with the process.

Considering buying your first home, but aren't sure where to begin? We talked with two Memphis-area Realtors, and here's what they said you should know before getting started on your home-buying journey.

Get preapproved for a mortgage

Mortgage preapproval should always be the first step buyers take before even looking at homes. Preapproval is the process in which a lender determines how much a buyer can borrow. If the buyer already has a home in mind, preapproval can help determine how much they could pay each month, including interest. That cost will also be determined based on the length of the mortgage, such as 15 years or 30 years.

Jay McMiller, a Realtor with RE/MAX Realty Group in Hernando , said that while a few lenders accept a 580 credit score, he recommends a 630 or 640 minimum. Getting roughly $5,000-$10,000 saved up and having the lowest debt-to-income ratio possible are important as well.

Know the types of loans available for homebuyers

Two of the most common mortgage options for homebuyers are FHA loans and conventional loans. FHA loans are insured by the Federal Housing Administration, while conventional loans are not backed by a government program.

Qualification requirements for the two types of loans vary, and prospective first-time homebuyers should closely examine the differences. In general, FHA loans are easier to qualify for, as they allow for a lower credit score and higher debt-to-income ratio. A down payment of at least 3.5% is required. Conventional loans typically require higher credit scores and lower debt-to-income ratios, and may allow for lower down payments.

FHA loans and conventional loans can both have either a fixed or adjustable interest rate, which can be a major factor in the cost of a mortgage over time.

With a fixed rate loan, the interest will not change over the length of the mortgage, regardless of fluctuations in the market. But if interest rates drop, refinancing would be necessary to get a lower rate, and that comes with fees.

An adjustable rate loan is the opposite — the interest rate will shift depending on the market. There's some risk going with this one as they usually have lower interest at first, but it can increase drastically and ultimately cost more than a fixed rate over the length of the mortgage.

Determine your down payment

The "ideal" down payment amount varies wildly depending on the buyer.

"I would say that it's a mix across the board," said Alex Turner, a Realtor with Hobson Realtors in East Memphis . "I bet it averages out to about 10% down, and then once they once they get up to 20% paid into their home, they drop the PMI (private mortgage insurance)."

PMI is an extra fee for buyers who take out conventional loans and put down less than 20%.

Be aware of additional fees

There's a mountain of additional fees that comes during the buying process. McMiller estimated the total additional cost, when including expenses like home inspection, appraisal, agent fees, a termite inspection and everything in between, could get up to around $2,000.

Home renovation in Memphis Thinking about renovating your home in Memphis? What you need to know to get started

Of course, that's nothing compared to closing costs. These fees can be anywhere from 2%-6% of a home's price, meaning a $300,000 home could come with closing costs of anywhere between $6,000 and $18,000. Make sure your Realtor negotiates seller concessions, which can potentially transfer some closing costs to the seller.

Hire an inspector

It may be tempting to skip getting an inspection, but both Realtors emphasized how essential they are. Turner said a termite inspection is especially important to do in this part of the country, as well as a drain line inspection. "Make sure there aren't trees growing in [the pipes]," Turner said, "or that there isn't a problem where you're going to have to dig up the entire front yard and have that replaced."

"At the end of the day, you know, humans are building the house," McMiller said. "I have been in a new construction they had inspected where the AC vents had been covered up, or there's no insulation in this wall, or not in the ceilings. Always, always, always do one."

Get an agent who represents your best interests

It's important to find an agent who puts your own needs and wants first above those of the seller.

"It's always good for a buyer to have their own representation," McMiller said. "A lot of people will go straight to the listing agent, and what people don't understand is that listing agent does not primarily work for you. They work for the seller."

McMiller also tells buyers not to let themselves be pressured into making a decision by an agent.

"Don't feel pressured or rushed that you have to buy something," he said. "It's a big decision — even if you're working with an agent that's pressing you with time and saying, 'Hey you need to do this, you need to do that...' Just be patient. Don't just settle, make sure it's the right fit for you and your family."

Popular or affordable neighborhoods in the Memphis area

Turner said the area of Normal Station, south of the University of Memphis, has been a particularly popular neighborhood the last three or four years. She's also seen the neighborhoods north of Rhodes College get bought up and/or torn down for new single-family homes. Binghampton has also become wildly popular in the last half-decade.

"It all comes down to where [people] feel comfortable," she said.

As for DeSoto County, McMiller said homes in Southaven's Pinewood housing development would be considered starter houses. New constructions can start out around $305,000-$310,000. McMiller said that while that's around $35,000 more than before the COVID-19 pandemic, on average homes in DeSoto will still cost less than in Shelby County, mostly due to Tennessee's higher taxes.

Make sure you're ready to buy a home

Oftentimes Turner helps individuals or young families who want to invest in a home, but simply aren't ready, either for the responsibility of it or the financial burden. She said most in this category quit during the preapproval process, but for those who want to buy but remain nervous, Turner recommends a different path.

"Sometimes I suggest going the route of a condo, which is what I did the first time I bought a house," she said. "And I'm glad now that's what I did so at least I eased into home maintenance, before I took on the day-to-day expenses that come with a full home ownership."

Is buying a home in your 20s or 30s even realistic?

As home prices continue to increase , it's easy for prospective first-time buyers to get discouraged. But for those who do their best to save and build credit, Turner said home ownership is "absolutely" achievable. You may just need to start out somewhere you didn't originally expect.

"You got to start thinking, 'Where can I afford and where will I feel safe?' There are areas, but it may not be exactly what you you'd originally intended," she said. "The great part about homeownership is that you can go ahead and invest where you can get in the market, wait a few years, turn it over, and move on to the next step when you're ready to get to the next place. In the meantime, you're building equity."

Peace be with my soul, too.

“Not long after discovering my need for God, I noticed a handsome guy at work, Dane. I found out he was Catholic, and I was appalled. When Dane asked me what I was, I proudly proclaimed that I was Wiccan, but internally, I gagged. Even I didn’t believe what I said. To my surprise, Dane didn’t end the date or our friendship. He seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. That was the first moment my heart softened a tiny bit. As time went by, we hung out more and started dating. One night, the topic of religion came up again. Instead of telling him about Wicca, I started voicing all the things I had been contemplating about who I thought God might be. For every idea I shared, Dane would say, ‘That’s what the Catholic Church teaches.’ I was floored. ”

‘Invincible’ Knows How To Do a Multiverse Story Right

Prime Video: 1, Marvel and DC: 0

Editor's Note: The below contains spoilers for 'Invincible' Season 2.

The Big Picture

  • Mark and Angstrom battle through a multiverse of chaos, pushing Mark to new limits and forcing him to make a fateful decision for his family.
  • Invincible explores the multiverse in a riveting way, blending comedy and terror while pushing Mark towards true self-acceptance & growth.
  • Mark's multiverse journey forces him to confront his identity, disentangle from his father's legacy and face the responsibilities of heroism.

The latest episode of Invincible sees the beleaguered hero, Mark Grayson ( Steven Yeun ), trapped in an endless spiral through a series of alternate universes that prove both entertaining and emotionally significant to the development of Mark Grayson's character. Mark's strange journey through the multiverse is full of riveting and entertaining riffs on contemporary comic book culture; think Prof Ock or his hilarious conversation about a specific man-bat lazy superhero moniker. The show's multiverse is unique because it tacitly connects Invincible to the broader world of superheroes, allowing for great comedic moments and harrowing battles that will help the character come to terms with who he is , his enormous power, and his responsibilities.

Invincible is an adult animated superhero series that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson, who’s just like every other guy his age — except his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man. But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

Mark Grayson and Angstrom Levy Duke It Out in the Multiverse

Season 2, Episode 8 of Invincible is a doozy , with a harrowing showdown between the mad multiverse genius Angstrom Levy ( Sterling K. Brown ) and Mark taking place through the multiverse with Mark's mother and brother hanging in the balance. Angstrom, unable to accept that this version of Mark is a more benign and enlightened Invincible, seeks to soften him by trapping him in dozens of bonkers universes. Angstrom lures Invincible to his home, where he tortures his family and manipulates Marks's deep-seated Viltrumite rage. Still, every time Mark takes a swing at the giant-brained maniac, he flies through a portal into another dimension, each one more ridiculous or dangerous than the last.

While Mark dukes it out through infinitude, Angstrom's mental state rapidly deteriorates, prompting him to break Mark's mother Debbie's ( Sandra Oh ) arm and throw his baby brother Oliver Grayson around like a rag doll, which is a big mistake because his family and their subsequent safety are number one priority for the fledgling hero. After what seems like an eternity, they finally come to blows in a bloody finale that sees Mark squashing Angstrom under his fists like a bug , with gallons of blood squelching under his blows, soaking a shirtless and ragged Mark. Mark has a near nervous breakdown with his first official rage kill under his belt and is driven to near madness by his solitude in the wasteland dimension, where he is seemingly trapped with the man he murdered. He is saved at the last moment by Atom Eve ( Gillian Jacobs ), albeit a future version of herself and the Guardians of the Globe , and she tells Mark she has always loved him. Mark returns to his universe and his family, where he decides to drop out of college and become the hero he knows he is meant to be.

‘Invincible’ Uses the Multiverse to Its Full Potential

A multiverse is an excellent place for a show to spin off in wild directions. It is an opportunity to explore significant dramatic or comedic effects. What Invincible gets right about the multiverse is that it does both. The multiverse tacitly ties the show to both Marvel and DC franchises . Mark's encounter with Prof Ock and Agent Spider , who look suspiciously like Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man, is particularly hilarious. Mark is thrown into the heat of battle and, being new to this dimension and unaware of its hero and villains, accidentally casts Agent Spider in the role of the villain. It's easy to see why Agent Spider has glowing red eyes. There is also an unforgettable moment with Batman; Mark sits atop a roof while a black cape flaps in the wind, with Mark remarking how lazy a name comprised of both Bat and Man is.

But the multiverse is also terrifying , as Mark tells a strange group of multiverse people sitting around a campfire. He says that in some places, time is all distorted. Mark has no idea how long he has been away, and it is not a far stretch of the mind to conclude that he may have lived an entire lifetime in one of those dimensions. Mark is constantly thrown into a strange battle with talking dinosaurs and extradimensional beings, among others, and dragged back to his dimension to be further frustrated by his inability to protect his family. The multiverse is also a place to learn things , and as Mark finally kills Angstrom, he knows exactly that, as he is reinforced by his brief encounter with the older Eve.

Two Familiar Faces Will Return for ‘Invincible’ Season 3

Why is mark's journey through the multiverse significant.

The series does a beautiful job of making a teen drama show and wrapping it up with a superhero bow, reflecting both the joys and pains of growing up, becoming disillusioned and accepting responsibility. Mark is terrified of becoming his father, which is a significant hurdle for him as he must embrace his Viltrumite heritage to defeat them, but he has been holding back. Mark's rage is unleashed in a barren and desolate universe, proving he will sacrifice anything to protect the people he loves, killing Angstrom Levy. The multiverse is a place where Mark goes through significant personal development . He now understands that the only way to protect the people he loves genuinely is to shed his identity as a typical teenager.

Mark's journey through the multiverse is significant because it is where Mark is finally forced to confront the reality of who he is. This is reflected in his decision to leave college and hone his powers. Mark understands that, in many ways, he is like his father , but with one crucial distinction: he can love and feels a responsibility to protect those people who are weaker than him. Mark faces a dark future ahead — his loved ones will never be safe; there will always be some being who wants to hurt Mark by hurting the people he loves. To do the right thing, he must be a benevolent Viltrumite, with all of their power and none of the fascism.

Invincible is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S.
