How to spend 1 day in Edinburgh

Draped across seven hills and crowned by a dramatic 15th-century castle, Scotland 's capital city is the second-most-visited city in the United Kingdom (after London). Edinburgh teems with historic landmarks, diverse museums, fantastic shopping and a thriving food and pub scene.

Within Edinburgh's medieval Old Town and neoclassical New Town, there's so much to experience. If you only have a day in the city, don't despair: The city is big enough to keep you entertained but compact enough that you can explore almost everything on foot.

Here's everything you need to know to make the most of your 24-hour visit to Edinburgh.

Getting there and getting around

Direct flights to Edinburgh are available from New York City, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington, D.C., through Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and other carriers.

We opted for a roughly 15-minute Uber ride (30.98 British pounds, or about $39) from the airport to our hotel thanks to our 2 a.m. arrival (the last tram from the airport is at 10:48 p.m.). However, we used the Edinburgh Tram during our stay and when we returned to the airport. It was extremely convenient.

Trams run about every seven minutes during peak hours every day of the week. In the early morning and evening, they run about every 10 minutes. Multiday tickets are available and a good idea if you're staying longer than one day and plan to explore beyond a walkable distance from your hotel.

Edinburgh is an extremely walkable city, especially if your itinerary is primarily around the city center and the Royal Mile. However, public transportation is reliable, with Lothian Buses operating more than 50 routes within the city and surrounding neighborhoods.

Stay near the action

Our hotel, the voco Edinburgh – Royal Terrace, an IHG Hotel was on Royal Terrace, on the north side of Calton Hill within the New Town area. Since I was using points and miles for our hotel, my points went further at a property a bit beyond the main tourist areas. I redeemed 97,831 Capital One miles for our eight-night stay. Rates start from $165 or 28,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

If you prefer to be closer to the action, consider a stay at the lovely Hilton Edinburgh Carlton (from $253 or 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night) or Hotel Indigo Edinburgh – Princes Street, an IHG Hotel (from $195 or 38,000 IHG One Rewards points per night). Splurge on a stay at the iconic Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian, ideally situated on Princes Street with fantastic views of Edinburgh Castle. Rates start from $275 or 67,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Hike Calton Hill

Begin your day with an early morning climb up Calton Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The entrance is at the east end of Princes Street. The hill is home to a collection of historic monuments, including the unfinished National Monument, honoring Scottish soldiers who died during the Napoleonic wars. The memorial inspired Calton's moniker, "Athens of the North," due to its likeness to the Parthenon. Other monuments are the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the Monument to the Scottish Parliament and the City Observatory. The Collective shop inside the observatory showcases local art, crafts and other unique souvenirs.

Arrive early to avoid the crowds and secure less people-y photos of the fantastic panoramas of Edinburgh. For a look at the city bathed in soft golden and pink hues, visit at sunset. However, you'll likely jockey for space as it's probably the most popular time to visit.

Stroll the Royal Mile

Edinburgh's cobblestoned Royal Mile is the spine of Scotland's historic capital and the focal point of the city's Old Town. Stretching from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the mile (technically 200 yards longer than a mile) earned its name from its 500-year history as the processional route for kings and queens.

Souvenir shopping opportunities abound along the route. You'll find a surfeit of shops filled with tweed, tartans, whisky and all sorts of glorious Scottish kitsch. The route also teems with historic landmarks, lively pubs and fantastic restaurants.

Tour Edinburgh Castle

Rising from Castle Rock, an extinct volcano at the top of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle is one of Europe's oldest fortifications. It's been a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress since the 11th century.

It's a fascinating place to spend a couple of hours. The castle houses three military museums, the National War Museum (part of National Museums Scotland) and Scotland's crown jewels, the crown, sword and scepter used during the crowning of every Scottish monarch. You'll also tour the Royal Palace, which features Mary Queen of Scots' antechamber and handmade embroideries, as well as St. Margaret's Chapel, constructed in 1130 by King David I and Edinburgh's oldest building.

Make sure you're inside the castle for the firing of the One o'Clock Gun, a tradition that dates to 1861. Book tickets online before your visit to secure a time slot. Family bundled tickets are available at a reduced rate. Guests age 6 and under receive free entry.

The museum is free and small enough that it doesn't take long to explore.

This massive museum is a treasure trove of collections and exhibits that encompass everything from nature and science to technology and design. Among the highlights are Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell; the 800,000-year-old Muonionalusta meteorite; and the pyramid casing stone (2589-2566 BC), one of the few surviving casing stones from the Great Pyramid of Giza, and the only one on display outside Egypt. Entry is free.

We were fortunate that our visit coincided with the limited exhibition of one of Scotland's most important historical artifacts, the Declaration of Arbroath. Dated April 6, 1320, the letter was penned by the Kingdom of Scotland's barons and freeholders asking Pope John XXII to acknowledge the country's independence and recognize Robert the Bruce as Scotland's lawful king.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

This art museum on Queen Street is one of three National Galleries of Scotland and features an incredible collection of portraits of Scotland's historical figures and notable Scots. It opened in 1889 and was the first gallery specifically built for portraits. The Scottish National Gallery showcases works from the Renaissance to the early 20th century, while the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art houses 20th- and 21st-century works.

Get a local perspective

Elsewhere connected us with local guide Steven Lindsay. Owned by TPG's sister brand, Lonely Planet, the company pairs travelers directly with local experts in destinations around the world, including Scotland.

Take a 'Harry Potter' tour with The Potter Trail

Lindsay also arranged our tour with The Potter Trail, Edinburgh's first "Harry Potter"-themed walking tour. The company grew from a small Facebook group offering a few bespoke tours to leading several tours a day, every day. Tours are free (don't forget to tip your guide), but you can book a private tour for your group starting at 35 British pounds (about $45) per person.

Our guide, Colin Branwell, provided a well-curated experience that touched on local history, lore and Edinburgh's connection to J.K. Rowling's quintessential series. Highlights included a stroll through Greyfriars Kirkyard, where you can visit the gravesite of Thomas Riddell and his son. The tour concluded on Victoria Street, which is believed to have inspired Diagon Alley and is often referred to as "Harry Potter Street." There you can stock up on all things "Harry Potter" at Museum Context or enjoy a pint and a pie at Bow Bar (aka the Leaky Cauldron).

Do a whisky tasting

In addition to arranging our "Harry Potter" tour, Lindsay set us up with a private whisky tasting. We met with Michael Johnstone, managing director and co-founder of Edinburgh-based Walkie Talky Brewing Co.

Not being big whisky drinkers, we were excited to learn more about Scotland's popular beverage. Our time with Johnstone gave us a better perspective of the complexities of whisky, from production to consumption. We sampled three whiskies while Johnstone shared details about the different types of whiskies and Scotland's five whisky-producing regions.

Visit The Real Mary King's Close

This is a fascinating opportunity to explore Edinburgh's medieval underbelly. "Closes" are the narrow and serpentine alleys that branch off the Royal Mile. They were traditionally named after a notable resident or trade shared by several residents.

The Real Mary King's Close was named in 1630 after resident Mary King, who built her own fabric business after her husband died. It comprised several towering tenement buildings — some reaching seven stories. In 1760, the close was partly destroyed and covered to make way for the construction of the Royal Exchange. It reopened as an attraction in 2003. A tour provides an intimate (and dark) look at life during the plague and those who called Mary King's Close home in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Go shopping

As I mentioned earlier, there are loads of shopping opportunities in Old Town along the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket area, including high-end clothing and textiles shops, souvenir stores, food shops and more. Sate your sweet tooth at the Edinburgh Fudge Kitchen and browse Scottish-made Harris tweed and cashmere items at Scottish Textiles Showcase .

If you're a fan of vintage clothing and thrift shops, don't miss W. Armstrong & Son , one of the oldest and most popular vintage emporiums in the U.K. The original shop was opened in 1840 by William Armstrong and featured traditional men's attire. Shoppers today can peruse everything from military uniforms and kilts to clothing and accessories from the '50s and '60s. There are four locations, including Old Town's Grassmarket and Cockburn Street shops.

Eat all the food, drink all the pints

Edinburgh boasts a thriving culinary scene with almost limitless ways to taste the capital city — popular breakfast spots, comfort food restaurants, pub grub and more.

Edinburgh Larder and Little Larder : The two side-by-side restaurants serve breakfast and lunch, and both are very popular. Everything is made in-house using locally sourced ingredients.

Cafe Vivo : Right beside the Museum of Edinburgh, this tiny bistro has a big menu — breakfast items, soup, pasta, paninis, fish and chips and lots more.

Cafe Elm Row : This is another cozy place for breakfast, brunch or lunch in the Leith Walk neighborhood.

Greyfriars Bobby's Bar : This historic pub sits on Candlemaker Row, just a short walk from the Grassmarket area of the Royal Mile. It's named after a local legend, a dog named Bobby, who watched over his owner's grave every night until his own death. (He's buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard next door.) After your fish and chips (which you should absolutely order), visit Bobby's bronze statue outside the pub and rub his nose for good luck.

Bow Bar : Pretend you're at the Leaky Cauldron scheming ways to destroy Lord Voldemort. Pies on offer here are handmade locally by Jarvis Pickle Kitchen, and they are fabulous.

Bonnie & Wild Scottish Marketplace : This food hall features some of Scotland's best independent food and drink producers. Our pies from Soup and Caboodle were on point.

The Fishmarket, Newhaven : I ordered fish and chips any chance I got, and this was my favorite place for them. Order the calamari, too. Trust me on that.

If you're all about pub life, you will not be disappointed. Biddy Mulligans, in the heart of Grassmarket, offers an authentic Irish pub vibe and is something of a local institution. Sandy Bell's features folk music and is a great place to chat with locals. Named after the creator of Sherlock Holmes, The Conan Doyle is near Picardy Place, where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born.

If you're lucky enough to spend more than 24 hours in Scotland's capital city, there's plenty more to explore. Here are worthy additions to your longer itinerary.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Originally built by James IV of Scotland between 1501 and 1505, the Palace of Holyroodhouse serves as the royal family's official residence while in Scotland. The Royal Mile ends at the gates of the palace.

A self-guided audio tour of the expansive palace includes the state apartments, a portrait-bedecked throne room, lovely royal gardens and ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey.

Hike to Arthur's Seat

Arthur's Seat is the highest point of an ancient volcano that's part of a group of hills known as the Salisbury Crags. You can access the trail from Holyrood Park near the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The (roughly) 2 1/2-mile loop takes around an hour and a half to complete, but you'll be rewarded with incredible 360-degree views of Edinburgh and the Port of Leith beyond.

Parts of the climb may be challenging. However, I'm not exactly in peak form, and I was able to make it to the summit and back.

St. Giles' Cathedral

This historic cathedral was founded by King David I in 1124, and most of the exterior dates back to a remodeling in 1833. It was dedicated to St. Giles, the medieval saint of lepers and those with disabilities. It's just across the street from The Real Mary King's Close. Join a free daily guided tour at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.

Eat more food

If I'm being honest, I grieved over restaurants I wasn't able to dine at during my visit — though I must admit my "to-eat" list might have been a bit ambitious. I'm already compiling a list of a few restaurants I've vowed to hit when I return to Edinburgh.

The Who Hits Back! Tour: Edinburgh, 8 July 2023

Well, here we are back in cloudy Scotland, very appropriate weather for this special situation. The city is quite old, very picturesque and worth a visit. Yes, it’s touristy, but in a good way – lots of whisky shops, kilts and tartans everywhere. But it’s absolutely welcoming and comfortable, something to see on every block. We’re playing at a most unusual venue. Each summer, the city of Edinburgh spend about two months building a large concert venue on the Castle Rock hill overlooking the city. At the very top of the hill is the legendary castle, the seat of power of Scotland for many centuries. And it’s not one of those smaller castles that dot the hills around the UK and Europe – this one is a monster.

It started as a settlement back in the Bronze Age (around 1,000 BC) to become a stunning historical landmark; most of what we see now was built between the 1500s and 1800s. They say it’s the most sieged castle in all of Britain, and it’s definitely built for a fight. On three sides are steep cliffs (this is an extinct volcano) and the long, sloped entrance make this an excellent defensible position – not that we are trying to keep people out today.

The Royal Mile is the name of the long, sloped street up to the castle, and everyone must come up that way – the band, workers, security, and all the crowd. There are still tours of the castle every day, even around us as we work. It’s so popular that it’s pre-sold-out for the next three days (you must book ahead during tourist season or you can’t get in to see it.) Our venue is several thousand seats in an arena, but those thousands of daily visitors walk right past us while we load in and set up, interesting for them, and unusual for us to have so many visitors while we work. It’s been raining somewhat, a drizzle now and then.

Early in the evening, the band comes in to sound-check. While we are onstage, a woman comes out in front of the stage, dressed quite nicely – I think she works at the castle, as she’s not in the part where the tourists come through. She goes nearly hysterical, seeing Roger and Pete up so close and she yells and cheers. “You can come up if you want?” Pete says over the microphone. She doesn’t believe the offer and stays put. So he send his assistant down to get her, and he brings her up onstage. She’s freaking out, and Pete offers to take her photo with Roger, grabbing her cell phone to do so. Then Roger returns the favor, and this excited woman cannot believe her luck. Just an accident, but easily done and so random it may never happen again.

Today is different, quite different for us: since our orchestra is traveling with us, they don’t need a rehearsal! Fantastic. That saves us hours of time today, and they will be in just after the band check to join us for the full group rehearsal of one or two songs, then we’re set to go. The arena fills up quickly and somehow they manage to squeeze in thousands of people up the one street in an hour or so. Fascinating.

This stage is quite small – as big as they can make it, given the space – but we are barely able to get in. All our side-stage operations (guitar techs, sound crew) are packed in, and our orchestra are elbow-to-elbow. The riser stage we use for horns/brass won’t fit at all, so we have them flat on the floor, and a few of the French horns have to sit behind the keyboard rig. Not ideal, but they are good sports about it – there is no other way.

Since we don’t have room for a big opening act, we have a special offer: our own Simon Townshend! He’s doing a solo show. Simon’s been prepping for ages, adding all new tricks to his arsenal, including looper pedals that repeat parts over and over, rhythm machines, bass pedals, harmony boxes. Using these he can play with bass parts, rhythms and even have harmony voices singing along with himself live. It’s a pretty cool bag of tricks. He’s doing a lot to keep people entertained out there. Then – it’s time to go – and we fill the stage with The ‘Oo and their orchestra.

“SO good to be here!” Roger calls out, right up front. Pete tells the crowd they’re grateful for their bravery and endurance, given the rain and such. He says he used to say the rain was God’s blessing on a show. Pete says they’ll use this introductory ( Tommy ) section to get everyone used to the orchestra – who he calls, knowingly, “The Edinburgh Philharmonic” (not true, but more on this later) He does admit they’re “called something else, but I don’t want to tell you what it is!” given the long history of conflict between England and Scotland.

Pete does some amazing guitar work tonight. During my favorite musical bit of the show – the last few moments of ‘1921’, he noodles some beautiful clean guitar work. Something you’d never have heard from him in 1970, but he’s grown so much as a capable player.

On a poignant and sweet note, Pete wants to say hello for one audience member; a friend of his daughter’s named Simon is here “and he may not be here in two weeks” . Very sad, but the crowd roars approval, and hopefully this guy is having a great life moment here with us all. Don’t forget – Life Is Temporary – it sure seems like a long thing, until it’s not.

And then on a lighter note, he calls out to a woman who’s been crazy-dancing in the aisles of the seats off to his left. She’s pretty free and wild, so Pete calls out to her “To the woman in the green jumper . . . Yes, you! I’ll have what you’re having!!” He also claims that he would love a great malt whisky – as we’re in a town full of specialised whisky shops. “A good malt whisky is probably what I miss the most (since giving up drinking). Most of you probably think I used to drink just cognac; that was because it was cheaper! To show all of you that I’m still a bit wild now I’ll have . . . a coffee!” Then he turns to the roadie who shakes his head no; it’s not ready. “Or in this case, it seems I won’t!” Instead, they do a great ‘Tattoo’, which Roger always seems to enjoy most, that great tale told of ink and manhood. Funny enough, the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is held each August in the arena we’re in right now – no relation! Just after, Pete’s coffee is brought out and he takes a hit or two and then opens his eyes wide as if he was feeling it immediately – just in time for a rousing ‘My Generation’. We’re so glad they brought this one back. It hadn’t been in the show for some time, and it just doesn’t seem like a Who show without that core piece. Plus it gives them that thing they like – a moment to jam, an unplanned mess-around at the end – where Roger likes to quote ‘Cry If You Want’. Jon Button throws out a great bass solo tonight, a moment to shine on such a critical piece. At the end, Pete tells everyone, “See . . . we can still make a mess!”

Pete continues to feel good, and there is some blazing guitar happening on ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’. Noted! And from the number of punters (audience) wearing their olive-green parkas, we can tell this is a Mod/ Quad audience, so the announcement of the Quadrophenia set is greeted with cheers all around. It was such a different response that Roger let them sing the first two lines of ‘5:15’. The only disagreement came during ‘The Rock’ when the film clips show Maggie Thatcher – to huge boos all around!

Soon, we’re all the way to the end, and with ‘Baba O’Riley’ completed, and Keith Levenson comes to talk to Pete: Evidently since there IS obviously another group called the Edinburgh Philharmonic, we shouldn’t say this orchestra is theirs! So Pete cautiously introduces them by their real name, The Heart of England Orchestra. At first, some boos come but everyone really does appreciate them and they get a nice round of applause. Pete thanks them for being gracious. “I knew you’d welcome them”, and adds that “they’re one of the best audiences we’ve had in years”. Very entertaining indeed!

It’s been quite a night – weird yet good! It was definitely a family affair today: Not only was Simon T our support act, we had his and Pete’s brother Paul in to watch today. Simon Daltrey – Roger’s son is here. And The Father of The Who Crew: Bobby Pridden came in to see us all tonight. Bob started with the Who back in December 1966, and only “retired” from road stuff (but still does studio work) just a few years back. Since The Who was the first band to use tape playback in 1970, he did that until I took it over when he left, then we got Mike McKnight in to handle that for this last tour. Finally, we all would like to thank the orchestra for putting up with the awful stage crowding. Our string bass player had to stop playing and move every time we needed to get past her onstage! Crazy, but it worked. Now we have another show here tomorrow, so we don’t have to pack out tonight! And no setup tomorrow which is pretty great news for the crew.

Gay Edinburgh is a city that hosts hundreds of events across the year, and queer travelers to Scotland should not restrict themselves to exclusively gay events.

 While June is the main month of LGBT celebrations and events for Edinburgh’s gay community revolving around a huge Pride Festival, there are plenty of other gay events in Edinburgh to look out for during the rest of the year – and every night of the week you can find live music and plenty of club events.

People in Scotland are incredibly welcoming, so if you can start a conversation on any of the popular hookup apps or in person, you are almost guaranteed to hear about something somewhere and get invited.

BearScotFest

No one does furry fun like the bears, and this is the biggest bear event in Britain, held annually in October. For all you bears, cubs, chasers, otters and admirers, there are plenty of parties, club nights, fab brunches and a Mr. BearScot competition – topped all off by a raunchy pool party!

Edinburgh International Film Festival

The oldest continually running film festival in the world, welcoming actors, directors and film fans from around the world. Held annually in June, this, of course, it’s not a gay event in Edinburgh, but very queer popular and increasingly showing films of an LGBT nature. One of our favorite film festivals around the world! 

The Edinburgh Art Festival

A visual delight is held annually in August. See the best of contemporary and modern artwork when many special – and often free – events are held by Edinburgh’s leading galleries, museums, and artist-run spaces during the festival.

Edinburgh Fringe

The World-famous festival of wonder in which thousands of performers take over the city and bring their talents to the city-wide extravaganza. The largest arts festival in the world, featuring everything from theatre, comedy, and dance to cabaret, musicals, operas, and spoken word. There truly is something for everyone.

While many gay travelers might be inclined to celebrate New Year on the beaches of Hawaii or surrounded by thousands of hunky men in Gay Bangkok’s White Party , if you can bare the cold, then Edinburgh offers one of the world’s best New Year celebrations. Three days of spectacular events culminating in an all-out New Year’s street party – Hogmanay is crazy wild and unforgettable!

Edinburgh is well-known as one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe, and of course, it has plenty of gay nightlife to cater to any kind of mood.

Being such a tolerant society, you are unlikely to experience any issues with displays of affection in public and, as such, will be welcomed in pretty much every club and bar in Edinburgh – but with such a vibrant and fun gay scene in Edinburgh, you really shouldn’t miss a night out here.

Lesbians and gay men frequently mix in all these bars, which makes for an interesting and inclusive night out. If you just want to explore and see where the night takes you, then the vibrant gay scene of the Edinburgh Gay Village, aka ‘the Pink Triangle,’ found located in the center of Edinburgh at the north end of Leith Street and Broughton Street. Been to them all? Want something dirtier and more post-industrial?

The biggest gay club in Edinburgh and a long-standing part of the Edinburgh gay scene. During the day, CC Blooms is a voguish restaurant and bar, which transforms into a hot, sweaty and raging gay club late at night, hosting many fabulous events (check their Facebook page for details).

If you don’t want the weekend to end, their Church of High Kicks on Sunday night is drag meets disco meets avant-garde fun and is extremely popular.

The Regent Bar

Outside the Edinburgh gay triangle – a 5-minute walk you’re rewarded with a relaxed gay/gay-friendly pub setting with quirky decor, pub food and an excellent range of ales. Guaranteed to be club kid free!

The closest thing to a lesbian bar in Edinburgh. A small but quirky atmosphere with prideful DJ sets and drink specials. A young crowd and extremely lesbian popular.

Victoria Bar

A cute little bar is catering to everyone on the edge of the Pink Triangle. A fashionable place to meet before moving on to the gay clubs of Edinburgh. Their G&T is fantastic, as is sitting on their outside tables on a rare sunny day, watching the world go by.

With good food and friendly staff, this cute little gay bar and restaurant in Edinburgh is perfect for an evening meal and to get the gossip on the latest going on in the Edinburgh gay scene. It’s above Edinburgh’s LGBT Centre and has plenty of pride inside and out.

Habana Edinburgh

An upscale gay bar is known as a popular pre-club or gay meet-up spot in Edinburgh. They have DJs every night of the week and a nice lounge-style area. Very locally popular and occasionally hosts themed parties.

A cornerstone of Edinburgh’s Pink Triangle, this eatery, and gay club combo have a hectic schedule of entertainment throughout the week, including game shows on Wednesday nights of house disco on Fridays. Complete with plenty of drinks specials, a cute black & white Photo Booth & Scotland’s first “Street-Art” Gallery, make this a gay venue in Edinburgh you really can’t miss.

OK, not a gay bar, but we are suckers for trends, and this hidden bar/speakeasy in Edinburgh for us was a must-visit. Themed like a private detective agency, it’s a blink-and-you-will-miss-it kind of black, but the quirky interior and delicious cocktails make a visit here well worth it!

Paradise Palms

Not technically a gay bar but a super alternative and quirky venue famous for its fabulous drag cabaret, delicious vegetarian food, and eclectic teapot cocktails. Confused? Wait till you see the palm trees or bump into the crochet club meetups. We love this venue – and they love anyone and everyone!

A short walk from the Edinburgh gay village, Bramble is one of the best cocktail bars in the UK . If you want to escape the world – or just the gay anthems and horny twinks – here you can sip classic and signature cocktails in a rustic setting with chilled music and great company.

St Andrews Brewing Co. Outhouse

One place where Grindr and other gay hookup apps have really made a difference worldwide is the closing of saunas and bathhouses. While continental Europe cities such as Berlin , Barcelona , and Paris have reversed the trend, the UK gay sauna scene is pretty dire, as we also found out in Manchester and Brighton .

In Scotland, the bathhouse / gay sauna scene has been particularly hard hit and today, if you want to explore the naughtier side of Edinburgh, you should know there are only two gay saunas in Edinburgh – and both are pretty run-down!

Not sure which tour was better- getting into the Vatican early or taking the train to Florence to see the David! The Tour Guy planned everything for us right down to the progressive food tour, The guides were very knowledgeable and even pointed out some things no one in the group knew. Made Our Trip Memorable!

We booked multiple tours in Rome and each one was outstanding. The catacombs, the foodie tour and especially the early access to the Vatican. All the guides were friendly and knowledgeable and on time, we had ZERO issues! Bucket list items checked off, we will book more tours when we go to London.

Great experience on land and water!

We used The Tour Guy experiences in Amsterdam last year. We’ve booked tours in Italy and France from them before, and decided to try out the canal tour and1/2 day bike tour. Booking was a breeze and communication leading up to and the day-of the tour was great! The canal tour did not disappoint, but the bike tour was our favorite. Beautiful day and new bikes, route was very manageable, and we had an extremely knowledgeable guide. Would 10/10 recommend both!

Do not use this tour company

We booked a tour with this company, at the Louvre in Paris, and no tour guide showed up. We contacted the company, waited an hour, no tour guide ever showed up, and so we had no tickets to get in. We spent four hours waiting for the next chance to get into the Louvre. They said they would refund the tickets, but we felt like that simply was not enough as we lost a half day of a short vacation in Paris, we had to change other plans, etc. Another company tour guide was there, but he could not get our tickets so we could not join his tour group. Would never, ever book a tour with this company again.

We booked a tour in Rome with the Tour Guy. When my husband had a medical emergency and we couldn’t go on the trip, they would not refund our money for a paid tour. I understand cancellation policy but not for a medical emergency. Will never use then again

STAY AWAY FROM THE TOUR GUYS

We had booked a tour of Windsor Castle for the last day of our vacation in London. I received all of my vouchers and also received the confirmation email the day before the tour. We meet the tour bus at the designated date and time. We boarded the van and come to find out The Tour Guys had overbooked the van. The tour guide then reviewed her list and we were not on it. So even though I had my vouchers and my confirmation email we were told to leave the van and they drove off to Windsor Castle leaving us stranded on some street corner in London. I tried calling their offices but no one answered. It being the last day of our vacation we missed Windsor Castle. STAY AWAY FROM THE TOUR GUYS!

Book with awareness.

Book with awareness. We booked a once in the lifetime trip to see the colosseum in Rome, January 2024. We carefully selected a noon timeslot knowing that we arrive in Rome that morning and can't possibly make 8am. 30 days prior to the tour we received a reschedule for an 8:15 tour. This is impossible for us to meet but the company has zero flexibility - even though they have an 11am tour still advertised! We now don't have a colosseum tour booked - and the company is refusing a refund or reschedule!

Stay away from tour guy

Seeing the youtube videos we jumped and booked semi day tour of paris. Apparently the guide had cold and wasnt wearing a mask. And was so disorganised that had forgotten to charge the batter of the speakers. Also she wasnt knowledgeable to many of the questions the group asked. And had the audacity to leave us hanging in the middle of the tour. A very bad taste in mouth

We didn’t got any help when trying to…

We didn’t got any help when trying to find the guide in Paris. We had a contact number to the guide but it was the number to the office of this company, and a person in another country answered and could not help us. Since this was “our fault” as the company said, we could not get any refund, not even a partial. The ticket was for 4 people to the palace of Versailles, so this was a really large amount which we paid to the company, to provide us a guided visit. When we complained, they didn't even gave us the opportunity to get a new visit somewhere else, or any kind of service to not loose a good customer. So unprofessional and really, really not nice!

Legends and Lore Tower of London DISAPPOINTED!!😢

We booked the Legends and Lore Tower of London and it was a complete waste of time and money. We arrived 10 minutes early as per the instructions at the meeting point. The voucher stated a representative holding a The Tour Guy sign would be there. But she wasn’t holding a sign and only asked people if they were there for a tour. We said yes and then she asked if it was with The Tour Guy. She confirmed a few others. But was missing two. We waited a bit but again, not holding a sign would make it impossible for someone to find the guide. Because of this we departed 8 minutes late and had to rush our way through the massive crowds at Parliament Square to the boat tour which had already left without us. So we had to wait 30 minutes for the next one. It’s actually a public taxi boat and made other stops like a bus would. So 90 minutes later we arrived at Tower of London. Instead of taking us straight inside to start the tour, proceeds to tell us other things about the area. By the time we entered the Tower of London, it was now almost 2 hours into the tour. The rest of the tour was all outside. She did not take us inside any of the buildings. The highlight for many is The Crown Jewels and she acknowledged that. When we got to that building she stated “oh how lucky there’s no line up” and then kept us another 20 minutes outside showing us pictures from the book she had on things we would have learned inside. We then noticed a line up starting to form so we left the group to not waste anymore time. I feel like we got very little out of this tour on the actual Tower of London. After we finished seeing The Crown Jewels we joined the last Beefeater tour which is free with admission to Tower of London and got much more out of that. The audio self-guided tour I believe would have been a better option than The Tour Guy.

We have our own bar. It’s not for show, it has optics, proper glasses, bar flies and everything. It even has fancy video conferencing facilities. (Aka a really big telly.) If it’s too early for a tipple, we have a café too. Where our clients drop by to chat, shoot some pool and have a coffee.

If you’re in on a Thursday around 5pm, you might just hear the rattle of our drinks trolley making its way around the office. That clink and squeak are the two loveliest sounds you’ll ever hear.

I find Guy & Co’s collaborative approach very refreshing. As well as strong campaign planning and great creative, they have also helped us run collaborative planning workshops with internal stakeholders. This approach has gone down really well and is one we are now adopting across our campaigns.

Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton eligible for 2025 Ryder Cup despite joining LIV Golf

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, both members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team at Marco Simone last fall, are still eligible for the 2025 team at Bethpage Black under the DP World Tour’s current guidelines. The pair left for LIV Golf earlier this year but have a pathway to be on the team, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings told reporters .

The newly appointed Kinnings dispelled previous concerns — which were even voiced by Rory McIlroy — that Rahm and Hatton’s defections to LIV Golf might prevent them from representing Europe in Long Island, N.Y., next year.

Rahm and Hatton must simply remain DP World Tour members to be eligible for the Ryder Cup, Kinnings said. That means the pair will incur fines every time they tee it up in a LIV Golf event, but if they pay those penalties and play in the minimum number of DP World Tour events each calendar year to retain membership (four), they can still be on the team.

“I think there’s been a slight misconception because the reality is, under the current rules, if a player is European, and is a member of the DP World Tour, and abides by the rules as they currently are — so if you don’t get a release and you accept the sanctions — there is no reason why players who’ve taken LIV membership and maintained DP World Tour membership, could not a) qualify and or b) be available to for selection,” the CEO said.

The change from 2022

Rahm and Hatton’s eligibility situation is in direct contrast with that of several other LIV players who chose to withdraw their DP World Tour membership last year. Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia resigned from the tour last year, effectively ending their Ryder Cup careers to avoid paying large fines. Meanwhile, Rahm and Hatton (and other European LIV members such as Adrian Meronk and Thomas Pieters) have kept their memberships.

According to The Telegraph’s James Corrigan , Kinnings consulted the DP World Tour rules department to ensure that Rahm and Hatton could play in the four required events while also serving their LIV-related penalties. Since LIV Golf plays 14 events each year, Rahm and Hatton need to serve a 14-week ban to carry out their suspensions. But instead of serving those suspensions at the end of the LIV season, Rahm and Hatton can serve them whenever LIV has an off-week but the DP World Tour does not, as revealed by Kinnings. As long as both players pay the appropriate fines — which will likely total more than $1 million each — they will be eligible to either qualify for or be selected for the European Ryder Cup team.

“It’s not a loophole,” Kinnings said. “Rules are for all of the membership and it’s important for people to know how those apply and they apply to every member.”

What are the future implications?

Not every player will want to battle constant fines and suspensions to maintain their Ryder Cup eligibility, but the news reveals that joining LIV Golf doesn’t necessarily prevent pros from teeing it up in the biennial match-play event on either side — LIV’s Brooks Koepka made the United States team last year.

Although the Ryder Cup requirements were not changed, Kinnings was willing to read between the lines of the DP World Tour rules to ensure Rahm and Hatton have a pathway to Luke Donald’s 2025 team. That effort is noteworthy as the professional game continues to operate in a fractured system, and the road to unification remains murky.

Rahm and Hatton were critical parts of Donald’s plan at Marco Simone — Hatton was 3-0-1 and Rahm 2-0-2. The duo played together in foursomes twice, winning the first match of the Ryder Cup and halving their Saturday game.
