Hello Marcos. I enjoyed this post on things to see/ do in Kalibo. Can you help me? I want to go to Aklan to experience how Pina cloth is made and to see people making clothing from it. Is there anyplace that you know of that can show a tourist this wonderful craft? I would really enjoy seeing it made, to learn about it, and to purchase some traditional items for myself. If you can respond with info I would appreciate it. Also, do you offer yourself as a guide around Kalibo and Aklan? Many Thanks!

You can start your search here: Dela Cruz House of Piña ( GMAP ). Make sure to ask if what you’re buying is 100% made from Piña fiber… great choice! I tailored a Piña barong in Kalibo 10 years ago, and it’s still good for use until now. Quality stuff! Great investment. No, I don’t offer tours. I’m a content creator.

Top 25 Aklan Tourist Spots (UPDATED): Best Places to See

Here is a comprehensive list of Aklan tourist spots you should not miss.

Aklan is best known for Boracay Beach, an internationally-acclaimed destination with powdery white sands like no other. It is the main attraction in the province.

But unknown to many of us, Aklan is home to other fascinating tourist spots, ranging from unspoiled ecological wonders to historical and cultural attractions.

In this article, we’ll share not only the popular Kalibo tourist spots but also the off-beaten destinations of Aklan in other municipalities.

We hope to promote responsible tourism and boost community-based development. At the same time, we aim to showcase the rich culture of the original inhabitants of Aklan.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Western Visayas Region, Philippines
  • Capital: Kalibo
  • Population: 574 000 (2015 Census)
  • Major Languages: Aklanon, Hiligaynon, Cebuano, Tagalog, English

1. Nagata Falls

Nagata Falls is one of the best Aklan tourist spots

If you’re after extreme adventure, trek your way to the majestic Nagata Falls. It is one of the remotest tourist spots in Aklan.

Expect to trail on dense forests, cross rivers multiple times, and assault untamed terrains before finally catching sight of its beauty. Lush forests surround Nagata Falls, a perfect fit for those after a tranquil and off-beaten destination.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Nabaoy, Malay
  • Trekking Time: 3-4 hours

2. Hinugtan Beach

Hinugtan Beach is one of the best Aklan tourist spots

Hinugtan Beach boasts powdery white sands just like those in Boracay Beach. Unlike the latter, however, Hinugtan Beach is generally off-beaten and raw, meaning, you won’t experience massive crowds or highly-commercialized activities when you come here.

It’s a perfect alternative for those who prefer less touristy destinations like me. Run across the white sands and swim on the clear, turquoise waters.

Hopefully, the local authorities will revitalize efforts to manage the island sustainably.

  • Location/Jump-off: Buruanga
  • Cottage Rent: Php 200

3. Jawili Falls

Jawili Falls is one of the best Aklan tourist spots

If you’re done relishing the beaches which Aklan is known for, it’s time to level up your adventure to Jawili Falls. It features a multi-level cascade on a giant limestone rock formation.

Each cascade has a naturally-built pool where you can jump or dive into it. To catch the best view of Jawili Falls, climb your way to the top.

From here, you can also view the surrounding forests and different flora species. It is now one of the top tourist spots in Aklan.

4. Nabaoy River

Nabaoy River is one of the best Aklan tourist spots

Nabaoy River is one of the off-beaten tourist spots in Aklan. Therefore, it makes up for a memorable escape if you prefer less crowded destinations. The river comes from forest-clad mountains upstream.

All along it, you’ll find deep pockets of pools and calm banks where you can have a picnic with your family or friends. Some groups also offer bamboo rafts and cruising for you to explore the river’s attractions.

  • Trekking Time: 15 minutes from the highway

5. Tigayon Hill and Caves

tourist attractions in kalibo aklan

The locals also refer to Tigayon Hill as “BukidTigayon.” It is believed that before the increase in population, unseen deities and spirits inhabited the hill.

Here, you’ll find two caves that yielded artifacts such as Chinese pots, and human bones. These are now stored in the National Museum. As you stroll around the hill, you’ll also pass by a giant balete tree, a chapel, and a Grotto of the Virgin Mary.

The summit of the hill rewards you with a breathtaking view of Aklan River and the surrounding plains and mountains.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Tigayon, Kalibo

6. Naasug Point

Naasug Point is one of the best Aklan tourist spots

Naasug Point features a 120-feet vertical cliff next to the turquoise sea. The beaches here boast white and powdery sands for you to enjoy. Because of the thriving marine life, scuba diving and snorkeling are also favorite activities here.

If you’re done swimming, you can trek to a nearby forest and a cave, which are both critical sanctuaries for endangered wildlife species.

  • Location/Jump-off: Brgy Naasug, Malay

7. Museo It Akean (Museum of Aklan)

tourist attractions in kalibo aklan

If you want to delve deeper into the rich history and culture of Aklan, visit Museo It Aken or the Museum of Aklan. Among the things to see here are the replicas of Sto. Nino, the province’s patron.

Since the majority of the people are Roman Catholics, it’s no wonder that they have occasions dedicated to The Baby Jesus.

  • Location/Jump-off: Kalibo

8. Hacienda Maria

Hacienda Maria is an outstanding showcase of ecotourism spots in the Philippines. It covers 14 hectares of varying natural landscapes to engage your adventurous spirit.

To explore the park, you’ll walk on a 1.3-kilometer wood-and-bamboo boardwalk. At the end of it, you’ll find a shallow lagoon, a sandbar, and the vast Sibuyan Sea.

Strolling in the park gives you the chance to see different bird species and other wildlife. It’s one of the best Kalibo tourist spots.

Gateway to Boracay

Exploring the Lush Natural Attractions of Kalibo

Aklan’s capital Kalibo is an awesome destination in itself and not just a jump-off point to Boracay. For many people, the idea of exploring this town’s off-the-beaten-track attractions—which include white sand beaches, waterfalls and mangrove parks—might be more interesting than squeezing into crowded beaches and pricey hotels along with hordes of other tourists.

The trip to Kalibo, sponsored by the Department of Tourism, is a fascinating discovery of the town’s well-preserved natural treasures and its cultural and historical heritage. The distinctly cool weather and laid-back culture came as a surprise, since the town is seen as one of the business hubs of the Western Visayas region and an international gateway.

Here are six reasons why more people should visit Kalibo:

Ati-atihan . Kalibo’s most famous attraction brings thousands of local and foreign tourists to the town every third week of January. One of the country’s grandest and oldest festivals, the Ati-atihan feature costumed soot-faced performers taking to the streets to dance to drumbeats in honor of the Santo Niño.

The Aklan Freedom Shrine. At the town center is the Aklan Freedom Shrine, at the center of which a monument to the heroism of Aklanon revolutionaries who joined the Katipunan during the Spanish occupation. The 19 Steps monument contains the mortal remains of the 19 Martyrs of Aklan and the effigy of their leader Francisco Del Castillo.

The Lagatik River Cruise. The Lagatik river cruise in New Washington town lets visitors enjoy a sumptuous lunch of the town’s best seafood and fresh tropical fruits for only P500 per person while cruising the serene river fringed by lush mangroves. For those who love to sing, you can hit that perfect pitch as the ship has a videoke on board. The town of New Washington is also the birthplace of the well-loved Jaime Cardinal Sin. In honor of the late Manila archbishop, the townfolk have established a shrine at the town center near his ancestral house.

Jawili Falls. Memorable trips are made with spontaneous decisions. The crystal-clear waters of Jawili Falls in Tangalan town never fail to entice passersby to take a quick dip, even those who come there with no plans to swim. Foreign and local tourists who take side tours around Kalibo often drop by here to scale the seven towering cascades. There are now small amenities such as shower rooms, cottages and a small restaurant in the area. Visitors do not need to hike to get there as the first basin is accessible from the main road. The entrance fee is only P10.

Bakhawan Eco-Park. Kalibo is also a haven of eco-tourism. A must-visit in Kalibo is the idyllic Bakhawan Eco-Park in New Buswang. The 170-hectare mangrove reforestation area was built in the 1990s to address the frequent flooding in the town and aims to protect and maintain the rich ecosystem of Kalibo. Take a relaxing walk around the eco-park, crossing man-made bamboo bridges to reach the picture-perfect scenery of a tranquil river with a lush mangrove forest as backdrop. There is a small colorful boat tied at the end of the footbridge, as if waiting for travelers who want to further explore nature’s beauty. Be sure to reach the end of the path of the lush forest mangrove to get the fascinating view of the sea. The serenity that this place brings is more than enough to stay in this town. The Bakhawan ecopark can be reached in 20 minutes by tricycle or private vehicle from the town proper. Entrance to the ecopark costs P100 per adult while students pay only P50 (effective November 2014).

Piña silk. Aklanons are also known to have pioneered the 8th century tradition of pineapple fiber weaving. Piña silk has been a popular choice offabric for the Philippine elite since the Spanish era. The fabric is usually used for making formal clothes such as the barong Tagalog and the terno; home accessories, and personal items like handkerchiefs. The piña-weaving industry is an important source of livelihood for many Aklanons. If you want to check out some of the weaving, visit the La Herminia Arts and Crafts and the Dela Cruz House of Piña.

6. Kalibo Cathedral (Kalibo Tourist Spot)

Initially built in 1826, this cathedral was tested by different tragedies and calamities such as fire back in 1885, World War II, and an earthquake back in 1990. Thus, it led to the renovation of the cathedral. Despite such action, there are still parts of it that were retained from the original structure. This cathedral houses the image of the Santo Nino, and it also serves as the center or focus of the festivity during the Ati-atihan Festival.

7. Museo it Akean (Kalibo Tourist Spot)

This mollusk on a shell is mistakenly known as woodworms, but they are not! Eat this one with vinegar or also known as sinamak and I can tell you now; you’re going to taste a far better food than an oyster. This food is also available in Bakhawan Eco Park for a very minimal fee.

Tigayon Hill Mini-Museum: A New Tourist Attraction in Aklan

The Tigayon Hill  Mini – Museum

The opening of the Kalibo Mini Museum or Tigayon Hill Mini-Museum was recently officiated by officials of The National Museum and the Department of Tourism (DoT) in Barangay Tigayon in Kalib, Aklan on March 31, 2015.

Artefacts found in Tigayon Cave in Kalibo are now in Kalibo Mini Museum

National Museum researcher Geovanni Bautista stated that the museum would be promoted as a destination for tourists in the area. “We will also help the local government declare the site as a national protected area.”

The building housing the Tigayon Hill Mini-Museum was constructed using funds provided by the DoT, and local tourist officials said that visitors could visit the museum free of charge in the meantime. The museum contains the artefacts unearthed by Bautista and several other people when they started excavating two of the caves in Tigayon Hills. These include pottery shreds, human and animal remains, broken Chinese ceramics, and lithic materials.

A rare Cornelian Bead found in the sites is currently in Manila being studied at the National Museum. It will be returned to Kalibo afterward.

The DoT believes that the Tigayon Hill Mini-Museum will boost the attraction of Kalibo for summer tourists. Most people associate the city as simply a way to get to the famous beaches of Boracay. For the savvy tourist, however, there are many attractions in Kalibo that will only be enhanced by the addition of the Mini Museum.

Other things to do in Kalibo

There is actually a museum just beside the Kalibo Cathedral that was established in 1882. Called the the Museo it Akean, the artefacts traces the history of the province from prehistoric times to the present. The museum also contains art exhibits and memorabilia.

Speaking of which, the Kalibo Cathedral is also an important and much revived landmark in the area. It was built in 1826, but suffered damage multiple times from war and natural disasters. Another landmark in Aklan history is the Aklan Freedom Shrine at the intersection of D. Maagma and Venetrans’ Avenues. It honors the 19 martyrs who fought against the Spaniards during World War II. There are 19 steps below the statue, eac one containing the name of each martyr.

There is also the Ati-atihan Festival held during the 3rd Sunday of January. It is as colorful and elaborate as the better-known Dinagyang and Sinulog, but much more spontaneous. If you missed that, you could find color in the lush mangroces at the internationally recognized Bakhawan Eco Park, which was a project by the non-government organization Kalibo Save the Mangroves (KASAMA).

If you are into crafts, then you should definitely make a visit to the Papierus Arts and Crafts on Osmeña Avenue part of your itinerary. You can get beautifully handmade paper that you can use as décor and for unique cards and notes. There is a demonstration on how handmade paper is made; it is always a good thing when you learn something new.

Aklan is also the center of piña fabrics, made from pineapple fibers cultivated in the region. To find the various export-quality fabrics produced by local weavers, head off to the Dela Cruz House of Piña showroom, where you will also see samples of nito basketry.
