Visit The Royal Palace in Amsterdam

The Royal Palace is an Amsterdam must do thanks to its opulent 17th century architecture. Found on the west side of Dam Square opposite the war memorial, it is close to numerous other Amsterdam attractions.

Walk through the edgy port city of Rotterdam

Journey across the country and find the port city of Rotterdam. Gaze upon vintage ships at the Maritime museum and collect local trinkets from a variety of different retail stores, all while being surrounded by over 160 different nationalities and languages. Bold architecture and an idyllic waterfront location make this a city worth savoring.

Stroll through an enchanting wonderland of tulips

Find the endlessly beautiful fields of tulips in Keukenhof, a mere 40-minute drive from the Dutch capital. You will feel an immense appreciation for nature’s beauty walking through the colorful gardens, alive with petals during the months of spring. Take time to sit and take in the vision and scents, either beside a lake or near a windmill.

Gain insights into the tradition of diamond cutting

Stroopwafel

Be mesmerized by the Netherlands beloved waffle meets cookie treat of Stroopwafel. With a thin dough and sticky thick caramel filling, pair this fluffy treat with a warm coffee and a cool day, picked up from a street vendor offering various irresistible toppings.

When the indulgence gets too much, reach for stamppot, a traditional Dutch classic of creamy potatoes usually mashed with carrots, turnip greens, spinach, onions, and kale. Try it topped with smoked sausage like rookworst if you’re still feeling indulgent.

Netherlands Trips & Tour Packages

Traditional Dutch houses reflecting in the canal in Jordaan neighbourhood, Amsterdam, Netherlands

With a robust economy, formidable football team, rich artistic heritage and ever-progressive attitudes on… well, pretty much everything, The Netherlands punches well above its weight, even by European standards.

Idealistic and industrious, cosmopolitan and tolerant, it’s a country whose cities continue to set the world pace for all things innovative. In classic Dutch liberal-mindedness, Amsterdam’s colorful cafe culture exists right alongside The Hague’s International Criminal Court, while psychedelic poppy plantations, glistening lakes and the occasional windmill still adorn the countryside. Distinguished, distinctive and a damn good fun holiday destination, The Netherlands is about as impressive and irrepressible as countries come – all the more so given that it was practically built on a swamp.

You'll find smaller crowds during autumn and winter when conditions can be quite cold and wet, though temperatures rarely drop below freezing. The bulb fields near Amsterdam come into bloom from April to mid-May.

It is known for its rings of canals, the Red Light District, the Anne Frank House and its famous museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, etc.). Amsterdam has a rich history in commerce, mostly due to the country’s colonies all over the world, and this gives the city a fascinating flavor and diverse population even now. There are great restaurants and shopping, and it is a very comfortable place to walk around in. It is also a great starting point from which to explore The Netherlands and beyond.

Netherlands ms3

Snap the perfect photo as you pass the Dutch windmills that dot the countryside. The Netherlands are home to the oldest and tallest windmills. The windmills served many uses, but the most important was pumping water back into the rivers so land could be farmed. Not every windmill looks the same and they all vary in architecture. The position of the sails on a windmill are used to convey messages like a birth or death in the family, a wedding, or a call to come to the windmill.

  • Jack L 2 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Sunset from Rijksmuseum I took my family on this tour on my second and their first times in Amsterdam. Trying to see the whole country on our vacation, I wanted a relaxing way for them to see the best of the city. Our operator, Mark, was FANTASTIC. Hospitable, funny, and extremely knowledgeable. I took a similar tour through a different company a while back but would not recommend a tour other than this and certainly would not let someone I know visit Amsterdam without taking this tour. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and water were on board alongside cheese and some Dutch cookies. Our trip focused on herengracht, oudezijds voorburgwal, the River Amstel, and princengracht. The boat had pillows and blankets for comfort and ours was one with a very small roof in the front for 4 or so people to be protected from the wind, although this was one of few and do not expect a covered boat (in my opinion, this is better for a more immersive experience). We took the 20:00 time slot in late April, aligning with sunset, so we got to see sights in daylight and twilight and finished the tour passing through lit-up bridges. I cannot recommend this company or their staff enough! Their high rating is for a good reason :) Read more Review of: All-Inclusive Amsterdam Canal Cruise by Captain Jack Written April 29, 2024 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. What travelers say about their trips to the Netherlands

Know where you want to travel to in the netherlands, travel tips for netherlands trips.

Put a springtime trip to the Netherlands on your travel wish list if you'd like to see the country's famous tulips in full bloom. The tulip is considered the Netherlands’ national flower, and you can admire over 70 acres of them in April on our Amsterdam & the Keukenhof Gardens tour. For many, getting to see such a quintessential Dutch attraction makes spring the best time to visit the Netherlands!

While the Netherlands experiences its warmest weather in July and August, the country also gets its highest number of visitors during these peak summer months. But, you won't be missing out if you choose to skip Netherlands tours during this time—the country really is lovely all year, and there is plenty of pleasant weather to enjoy from April to October.

Of course, like many places throughout Europe, the Netherlands also boasts stunning Christmas markets during the winter. If the sparkle of the festive season calls you, start planning a trip to the Netherlands for December to see Dutch cities like Amsterdam and Maastricht decked out for the holidays. Our

Christmas Markets of Amsterdam, Luxembourg & Brussels tour packs a good mix of seasonal cheer and historical sites, and our Christmas Markets of Northern Europe: Amsterdam to Stockholm tour is ideal for travelers looking to see Scandinavian capitals after their Netherlands vacation.

The Netherlands tours we offer give you a peek at all the country's famous highlights. From canals and world-class museums to sprawling flower gardens and quintessential windmills, there is so much to see in this stunning country.

Amsterdam is one of the top places to go for an immersive look at true Dutch culture. With its row houses, outdoor cafes, lively culture, and fascinating history, it truly is one of the best cities in the Netherlands. Check out our Amsterdam tours if seeing this capital city is on your bucket list.

Beyond Amsterdam, cities like Maastricht and Delft offer a different look at life in the Netherlands. Add an excursion to Delft on our Amsterdam, Luxembourg & Brussels tour to see the the town's cobbled alleyways, medieval architecture, and breathtaking churches. Then, soak in picturesque countryside views as you travel through the province of Limburg to Maastricht, a hip university city with plenty of outdoor cafes, shopping, and historic Roman remnants.

Of course, any time you get the chance to see flowers in the Netherlands, take it! Here are just some of the places to go on a trip to the Netherlands to see these beautiful blooms, and more:

  • The famous Keukenhof Gardens, one of the world’s largest flower gardens specializing in tulips. You can visit them on our Amsterdam & the Keukenhof Gardens tour
  • The Aalsmeer Flower Auction in the city of Aalsmeer, where you can watch sales in action at the largest exchange of flowers and plants in the world
  • The Bloemenmarkt, the market hosted on houseboats floating along Amsterdam’s canals

While the Netherlands may not spring to mind when we think of the world's most famous cuisines, the country's food scene is definitely something to write home about. Some popular dishes include fried cod, hearty soups, fries dipped in a variety of sauces, and fried, meat-filled balls called bitterballen .

Looking to step outside your comfort zone? Try maatje , which is raw green herring commonly served with raw onions and pickles. Locals usually eat it as a snack food, so you'll rarely find it in restaurants; swing by a street-side vendor for a taste of the best!

Did you know that the Netherlands is one of the world's largest cheese exporters? It goes without saying, then, that you need to try a few bites of cheese while you're there. Local favorites include Gouda and Edam, and you can find them by popping into almost any market or restaurant.

If you'd like to really indulge, there are plenty of Dutch specialties to satisfy any sweet tooth. Here are some local favorites to seek out on a trip to the Netherlands:

  • Sweet or savory pannekoeken , which are thin, crepe-like pancakes topped with everything from fruit and whipped cream to cheese and ham
  • Small, sugar-dusted pancakes called poffertjes
  • Doughnuts called oliebollen , which are a holiday favorite
  • Stroopwafels , two thin waffles sandwiched together with a caramel syrup
  • Anything and everything made with black licorice, which Dutch people call drop

Thanks to its ample coastline along the North Sea, the Netherlands enjoys moderate weather that rarely gets overwhelmingly hot or cold. But, a majority of Holland sits below sea level, so dampness and fog are not uncommon. Fit in with the locals and remain prepared for the weather by packing simple yet stylish basics that can be layered no matter what the temperature is like on your Netherlands vacation.

While the country's maritime climate prevents any weather extremes, it also means rain showers are common. So, it's best to be prepared with rain gear on any of the Netherlands tours you may have your eye on. A warm rain jacket, travel-sized umbrella, and comfortable, waterproof shoes will come in handy if you happen to get caught in an unexpected drizzle—which is always a possibility on guided tours of the Netherlands!

Looking for more packing tips for the Netherlands tours you have your heart set on? The regional experts on our Customer Experience Team are always just a phone call away. You can also download our mobile Tour Companion App to find a helpful packing list for Netherlands vacation packages once you're booked!

Netherlands & Belgium

Our river cruises perfectly capture the essence of this region... from the wild array of bulbs blooming during springtime... to fairy-tale castles and picture-book villages... to the windmills that charmingly dot the countryside and the lively canals of Amsterdam.

Netherlands & Belgium Escorted Cruises

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the Netherlands & Belgium

The Netherlands and Belgium have much to offer and are regions ripe with tradition and innovation, maritime heritage and influential Dutch Masters... not to mention the true gems of this region that bring it to life in springtime with an endless sea of blooming tulips, daffodils and hyacinths along the inland waterways, in cities like Antwerp or Maastricht or in grand gardens like Keukenhof.

Dutch tulips in bloom, everywhere in the netherlands, a spot of local color....

The tulip has been an important part of the culture and economy of what is now The Netherlands since the 16th century – and in fact, speculation on out-of-control tulip bulb prices is thought to have caused one of Europe's earliest financial panics in the 1630s. These remarkable flowers are still a cultural icon today throughout The Netherlands... where you'll see them in grand gardens like Keukenhof in Lisse, and in the gardens and flower boxes of private homes and public buildings alike throughout the country.

Windmills of Kinderdijk

Check out the world's largest collection of centuries-old dutch windmills at kinderdijk in the netherlands.

Insights into windmills and their ubiquitous role in Dutch life await you on a visit to the village of Kinderdijk, where the flat landscape, crisscrossed with canals, is home to the largest concentration of windmills in the country. The 19 windmills, most of them built in the 18th century, are national monuments; for centuries, their massive wind-driven mechanisms have been used to pump water out of the polder and into reservoirs and canals, reclaiming land from the river. Such ingenious methods of water management have enabled the Netherlands, a country that's almost fifty percent below sea level, to exist at all, lending weight to the local saying, "God created the Earth, but the Dutch created Holland."

Tauck Exclusive – Evening at Schloss Ehreshoven

Enjoy an elegant dinner and tour at schloss ehreshoven.

Built in the 14th century and later expanded in the grand style of a Baroque manor house, Schloss Ehreshoven is surrounded by gracious 18th-century French gardens and a castle park. For nearly a century the castle has been the heart of a charitable foundation whose main mission includes providing a home for unmarried aristocratic ladies without means in their golden years. Frequently used as a location for movies and TV shows, the Schloss provides an elegant setting for Tauck's exclusive cocktail reception and dinner, hosted by a member of the family.

Tauck Bridges Family Travel

Visit the netherlands with your family on our "castles on the rhine" family river cruise.

Take a canal boat cruise through Amsterdam (and see just how fast the Dutch go on their bicycles)... visit the city flower market... and tour the Dutch capital's van Gogh Museum as you and your family cruise through Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands aboard Tauck's "Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure."

Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands

Spring is definitely in the air at the netherlands' keukenhof gardens.

It's only open to the public two months a year... but during those two months in spring, Keukenhof Gardens in the Dutch town of Lisse puts on an annual show that can best be described in visions. Just picture tulips, multicolored and in the millions; daffodils, golden-hued with beauty unmatched; hyacinths, pink, purple and white perfumed and pretty; and narcissi, cupshaped and showy, all flowering simultaneously as far as your eyes can see. It's a show you won't want to miss.

Most people will probably have preconceptions of the Netherlands, whether this is luscious fields full of tulips in spring, Amsterdam’s stately canals lined with Golden Era-townhouses or windmills and quaint medieval towns where Dutch artists created masterpieces… Bike and barge tours in the Netherlands combine all of these elements and more to give you a deeper insight into Dutch culture and the country’s verdant and varied landscapes.

What’s more, these tours make the most of the traditional forms of local transport — biking through the country’s (almost) 35,000 kilometers of cycle lanes and cruising through its vast network of rivers, canals, lakes, and marine waters.

Cycle and sail through Holland… or is that the Netherlands?

Holland and the Netherlands are one and the same, right? “Nee!”, say the Dutch.

Holland is but one region of the Netherlands; admittedly a very important one, made of the two provinces of Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland, and containing the three largest Dutch cities — the capital Amsterdam, the port and architecture city Rotterdam and politics center The Hague. Nevertheless, our Bike and barge tours Netherlands do, of course, come here!

Take, for example, our Holland Tulip Tours , on which guests cycle between the vast blooming flower parks and historical cities of North and South Holland, and sleep in their comfortable barge quarters in the evenings. But it would be criminal to suggest that these are the only bike and barge tours that the Netherlands has to offer!

Bike and barge tours in other regions of the Netherlands

We offer cycling tours coupled with cozy boating accommodation/transportation in the Wadden Sea and its gorgeous islands in the north , from Amsterdam to Germany on the majestic Rhine River, and through the green riverscapes and polders of the country’s heart while journeying towards one of the contry’s oldest cities, Maastricht , the vibrant southern city on the River Meuse, almost surrounded by Belgium and Germany.

Still not quite what you’re looking for? No problems. We offer 22 wonderful bike and barge tours through the Netherlands, so take a closer look or get in touch with our team!

The first thing tourists notice when they arrive in the Netherlands is the bikes. So many bikes! Cycling in the Netherlands is a way of life and it’s a part of our culture and heritage that we love to share with visitors. And in this post, we share 15 incredible bike tours to explore the Netherlands.

So, hop on – we’re going for a ride!

Is Netherlands good for cycling?

More than 25% of the Netherlands is at or below sea level. Being a mostly flat country makes the Netherlands a great destination for a bike tour.

It’s easy and fun to explore the whole of the Netherlands from the seat of a bicycle. Out in the countryside, you can get away from the crowds and discover the most beautiful sights by bike. In the big cities, like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, you can join the throngs of daily commuters and cycle along with the networks of cycle paths. Taking a bike tour in the Netherlands offers a wonderful sense of freedom but there are lots of motorists in the cities too so do take more caution when the traffic is busy.

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Decked in the national orange color, dancing to music, and eating orange-glazed pastries, many in the Netherlands Saturday are marking King’s Day , celebrating the birthday of their monarch who is enjoying a very slight rise in popularity as per a national poll.

As King Willem-Alexander celebrated his 57th birthday with his family in the northeastern city of Emmen, people across the country engaged in the traditional “free markets” held on that day, selling second-hand toys, books and other items. Others toured through the historic canals of the capital, Amsterdam as orange smoke from flares held aloft one boat drifted over vessels of all shapes and sizes jostling for space on a busy canal.

“Celebrating your birthday with your own family is the most beautiful thing you can experience. I’m very happy everybody is back,” Willem-Alexander told Dutch broadcaster NOS during a walkabout in Emmen, 190 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of the Dutch capital.

An annual poll published by the NOS for King’s Day showed Willem-Alexander’s popularity edging up very slightly since last year to 6.6 out of 10. His Argentine-born wife, Queen Maxima, scored 7.1 out of 10 in the poll of 1,015 people, conducted earlier this month.

European leaders' discussions at a summit in Brussels were set to focus on the bloc's competitiveness in the face of increased competition from the United States and China. The royals’ popularity took a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic after Willem-Alexander and his family went on vacation in Greece during a partial lockdown. The royals cut short their break amid national uproar and Willem-Alexander took the unusual step of issuing a video message to express his regret and contrition for the trip.

The king’s three daughters, Amalia, Alexia and Ariane have all spent time out of the country recently — Ariane has been studying in Italy while Alexia has taken a gap year to travel. The eldest and heir to the Dutch throne, Amalia, also returned ahead of the king’s birthday after being forced to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam and move to Madrid following threats from the criminal underworld.

Amalia, 20, who is studying politics, psychology, law and economics at Amsterdam University, told NOS she was “extremely grateful to everybody who made it possible” for her to live in Spain, where she said she was able to enjoy more freedom than in the Netherlands.

But, she added: “I’m glad to be back.”

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days

• This was my first experience using travel agency for vacation and I couldn't be more satisfied. I highly recommend using Wise Yatra, they planned a wonderful trip that catered to all my personal needs. • First let's start with the location– Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful! My trip was only 4 days long but Wise Yatra made the most of it. They set up 3 tours within those days that gave the perfect opportunity to see a few of the key attractions within the Netherlands. One day was offered a walking tour through a popular local tour guide company. The guide was very knowledgeable of history and the downtown area, he was also very friendly. Another day offered the opportunity to see the Tulips, windmills and clogs through another local tour company. The company has coach bus accommodations to and from all attractions and meeting locations. The guide presented herself very professionally and also very knowledgeable of the history and attractions themselves. The last event offered through Wise Yatra was the canal cruise which offered an alternative perspective of the town via canal level. • Secondly, I could not ask for a better travel company to book through. Originally I booked this tour believing I would be joining a group. After realizing that was not the case, naturally I was apprehensive about moving forward with the trip. Associates at Wise Yatra reached out to me on a personal level to fine tune details… After expressing my concerns, the associates at Wise Yatra assured me they would be able to accommodate me as a solo traveler. My itinerary was made based on what I wanted, tours were upgraded from self guided to guided, my hotel was upgraded to a better location and I was able to stay in constant communication before, during and after my trip. They even made sure I made it home safe! Some upgrades came with a slight cost, some upgrades did not, however cost of upgrades were minimal and well worth it. The driver booked for airport transfer was local and very respectful. Also, all my questions about documents and information needed overseas were answered promptly and knowledgeable. All in all, Raj, Rachit, Nishchitha, and the rest of the team did a wonderful job. I look forward to using the Wise Yatra service again in the future.

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise) Tour

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise)

We loved this tour of Holland, and it was true to its name -- Authentic Holland. From the big cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, to the smaller towns of Gouda and Delft, and all the villages, canals, churches, windmills, historic buildings, and country-side sights in between, we could not have asked for a better up-close and authentic look at life in the Netherlands. The excursion to the Tulip Gardens was fantastic! The ship's crew and our tour guides were wonderful -- of the 96 passengers on board, our family of 6 and one other family of 4 were the only English-speaking guests. The crew and the guides went above and beyond to make sure that English communications were given "equal time", and it was very much appreciated. Even though we were in the definite minority (the majority being French) we never once felt uninformed or left out of the conversation or the activities. All in all, our tour experience was fantastic and immersive, and one we will never forget! We would suggest that more North Americans should discover for themselves what CroisiEurope has to offer!

We had a great time but it rained every day and I very much wished I had roughy my winter coat!! The food was good but the portions were small. The room was small but comfortable. Many fellow travelers including myself wished for more to do on the ship. Maybe games to play, cards, etc.

The tour of Holland was wonderful. Our tour director was great. Our driver was great. The weather was not so good. I think the heavy mist and rain made me ill. It was impossible to find any cold medicine in our busy schedule. Fortunately I brought some headache medicine with me just in case I needed it. I did not want to miss any of the scheduled visits but I was anxious to get home to deal with the symptoms.
We enjoyed the nature and flowers and canals. The accommodation was good and the Fletcher hotels very peaceful in the country.
