If you're arriving to Rome by air, you're most likely touching down in Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO), Italy's biggest airport by the number of passengers and one of the busiest in Europe (although some airlines—especially budget airlines—fly into nearby Ciampino Airport ). The airport is located outside of Rome in the town of Fiumicino, and you can choose from various options for getting to the city center. Rome stretches out over several neighborhoods, so the best method of transportation is whichever one gets you closest to your final destination.

Rome's metro doesn't make it out to the airport, but local trains do. The train is comfortable and affordable, not to mention the fastest way to travel into the city. If you want the least expensive option, the bus only takes about an hour but is less than half the price of the train. Taxis, on the other hand, are the most expensive, but they use a flat-rate fee from the airport so you can ride without worrying about the meter.

How to Get from Fiumicino Airport to Central Rome

• Train: 32 minutes, from $16 (quickest option)

The fastest way to get from Fiumicino Airport to Rome's city center is by the train, with two options depending on your final destination.

• Leonardo Express : This direct train is the fastest way to reach the center of Rome, and takes 32 minutes from the airport to the Roma Termini station. Termini is Rome's main transportation hub and from here, you can connect to both metro lines to the rest of the city as well as long-distance trains to other parts of the country. The cost is 14 euros for each direction, or about $16.
• Regional Train : The regional train isn't as fast as the Leonardo Express and doesn't go to Termini station, but the ticket is almost half the price. Plus, if you're staying outside of the historic city center, you may find the arrival options even more convenient than Termini. The regional train makes stops at Trastevere, Ostiense, and Tiburtina stations, all of which are easily connected to the rest of the city. Try to confirm with your accommodations which station is most accessible before arriving, because traveling downtown Rome can be a hassle, especially with luggage.

Both the Leonardo Express and regional trains run from about 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. and depart every 15 minutes. You can purchase tickets in advance through Trenitalia or buy them at the station in the airport upon arrival. Make sure you validate your ticket in one of the machines on the platform before getting on the train, otherwise it isn't valid and you may get fined.

The most budget-friendly option for getting from Fiumicino Airport into Rome is by taking the bus, and there are several private bus companies to choose from. Some of the most popular options include Terravision , SIT, and TAM, but all of them end at Roma Termini station and cost more or less the same. However, they do take different routes to Termini, in case you want to be dropped off in a different part of the city.

All bus companies charge bout $6–7 for a one-way trip or about $10–11 for a roundtrip ticket. Most of them offer a small discount if you purchase tickets in advance, also guaranteeing you a seat in case it's a full bus.

Depending on the company, route, and traffic, buses take about an hour to arrive at Termini station, or nearly twice as long as the train. But if you want to hold onto your euros for gelato instead of train rides, the bus is an easy solution and much more affordable.

Roman taxis, unfortunately, don't have the greatest reputation. Cab drivers are known to run up the meter so unaware visitors end up paying more, and even with an honest taxi driver, the meter will probably be run up regardless because of Rome's perpetual traffic. Romans love to drive, and the city's layout makes it especially susceptible to binding gridlock.

The good news is that a taxi ride from Fiumicino Airport to anywhere in the city center costs 48 euros, or about $54, for up to four passengers with luggage. You don't need to worry about the meter or getting stuck in traffic, and if a driver tries to charge you more, you should refuse to pay it. To avoid any problems later, confirm the price with the driver before getting in the car.

Local buses don’t run from and to Leonardo da Vinci Airport, as it is located outside the city limits in the Fiumicino area. Still, plenty of private bus lines handle rides from FCO to Roma Termini, providing airport passengers with various and affordable services. • Rome Airport Bus:  Traveling to Termini Station without in-between stops, Rome Airport Bus needs approximately 50 minutes to reach its destination. It runs from 00:05 am to 10:00 pm every 30-60 minutes. Its stop is to be found near Exit 6 of T3. Buses actually leave from bus stand no.15. • Leonardo Express: The super-fast Leonardo Express travels directly from Rome Airport to Rome Train Station in just 32 minutes. It runs at a 15-minute frequency from 06:08 am to 11:23 pm and leaves from the airport train station, situated in front of T3, close to both Rome airport terminals. The train carriages are all first class, kitted with baggage space and charging outlets, while there are accessible cars as well. The ticket for Leonardo Express is 14€/15.40$ and can be bought from the Trenitalia website, the airport ticket machines and counters (open from 06:45 am to 10:12 pm), and from some shops (tobacconists, etc.). Online tickets are already validated and can be used within 90 minutes of the chosen departing time. Conversely, other tickets must be validated at the validation machines. Please note that in case of rail strikes, the train is replaced by a bus line.

Car Rental from Rome Airport to Train Station

The best ways to get to Rome from Fiumicino Leonardo Da Vinci Airport FCO are by train, coach, and taxi. If you are brave enough to drive, you can rent a car-sharing service and leave the car in the dedicated parking in the city.

In this article, I will lay out all the options you have to reach the different neighborhoods and the most important hubs of Rome from Fiumicino Airport.

The best way to get from Fiumicino Airport to Rome – All your options

I think the best and easiest way to reach Rome from Fiumicino Airport is by train. It’s fast, frequent, affordable, and it certainly doesn’t get stuck in traffic. There are two types of trains from Fiumicino airport to Rome: the Leonardo Express which goes direct and doesn’t stop anywhere, and the regional train which stops at all the biggest train stations in Rome.

Leonardo Express from Fiumicino Airport to Rome Termini

Leonardo Express is the direct train connecting Fiumicino Leonardo Da Vinci Airport to Rome Termini. Being direct, it’s the fastest train option. The first train leaves the station of Fiumicino Airport at 5.38 am and there is one every 30 minutes until 6.38 am. After that, it’s every 15 minutes.

The Leonardo Express train takes 32 minutes to reach Roma Termini station from Fiumicino Airport and the ticket costs 14€.

You can buy the ticket from Trenitalia’s official website or by downloading the handy Trenitalia app. You can consider the Omio travel booking website if you are booking different journeys and want to compare prices and timetables.

Regional train from Fiumicino Leonardo Da Vinci Airport to Rome

The regional train from Rome to Fiumicino Airport takes longer because it stops at many train stations. The price is 8€ per person and it’s every 15 minutes.

The regional train from Fiumicino Airport starts every day at 5.57 am and the whole journey takes 48 minutes. The stations covered by this train are Parco Leonardo, Fiera di Roma, Ponte Galeria, Muratella, Magliana, Villa Bonelli, Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense, Roma Tuscolana, and Roma Tiburtina. There is one train every 15 minutes circa.

It’s convenient if you are staying in a neighborhood near a smaller station because you don’t need to get to Termini. For example, since I live near a small train station and I don’t have a direct connection with Termini station, I usually get off in Trastevere and then change to the train that stops near my house. Much easier than getting to Termini and then having to take the metro to reach my train.

This train is a better choice if you have booked your hotel in Trastevere , in Ostiense, near Valle Aurelia metro station, or in the Tiburtina area.

Just like the Leonardo Express, also this ticket can be easily bought on the Trenitalia website or even better from the Trenitalia app so you can simply show the bar code to the ticket inspector.

Several buses and coaches travel from Fiumicino Airport to Rome. The main companies that run this route are Cotral , Schiaffini , Terravision , Sit Bus Shuttle , TAM Bus , and Itabus . You can buy the tickets from their official websites, newsagents and ticket booths inside the airport, and also onboard for an extra fee. You can also book your shuttle bus to and from Fiumicino Airport on GYG .

Tickets vary depending on the company but they usually range between 6 to 7€ per single trip, making this the cheapest option to go from Fiumicino Leonardo Da Vinci Airport to Rome, perfect if you are traveling on a budget .

Each company has its departure station in the airport and follows a specific route. In Fiumicino, usually, the bus stops are outside the exit of the Arrivals of Terminal 3 (T3). I think only Cotral is outside Terminal 1.

Most buses end their journey in Roma Termini as it’s the main train station but many stop also in other areas such as near the Vatican in Via Crescenzio, Circonvallazione Aurelia near Cornelia metro and bus station, and near Ostiense train station in front of Eataly. In Termini, buses usually stop in Via Giolitti or in Via Marsala.

Taking a taxi is the most comfortable way to go to Rome from Fiumicino Airport especially if you have heavy luggage. You can take a taxi from the exit of your Terminal and it will drop you directly at your hotel.

The fee from Leonardo Da Vinci Airport of Fiumicino to Rome within the Aurelian Walls is set at 50€ per car and it takes between 40 to 50 minutes to reach your destination. This is obviously an estimated time because Rome’s traffic is always quite unpredictable.

If you are brave enough to drive in Rome , you can either rent a car or use one of the local car-sharing services. Depending on where you are going in Rome from Fiumicino, the drive will take between 20 minutes to an hour.

From Fiumicino Airport, you will need to merge into the Autostrada dell’Aeroporto highway and then the A90 GRA highway. From the A90, you will take the exit closer to the neighborhood you need to get to. Make sure you stay far from the ZTL (limited traffic zone) to avoid hefty fines.

Roma Termini - Leonardo Da Vinci Airport connection in just 32 minutes with Leonardo express

Leonardo express is the  non-stop service  that connects the Roma Termini train station, the main interchange for all public transport services as well as the lines for Florence/Bologna/Milan/Venice and for Naples/Salerno, to the Rome Fiumicino Airport  in just 32 minutes , with departures scheduled every 15 minutes. The train station is conveniently located inside the airport.

Ticket price: just €14! If you’re travelling with a group, you can take advantage of the  ‘Mini-groups’ fare  to purchase 4 tickets in a single transaction for the price of €40 instead of €56!

Remember, you are entitled to a number of free benefits if you choose the Leonardo express:

Rome Fiumicino Airport Rome

Taking the train to Rome’s Termini station — the train station located in central Rome — will spare you the time and stress of navigating Rome’s busy streets in a taxi. It takes just 32 minutes by non-stop train to travel from Rome’s central Termini station to Fiumicino. The Leonardo Express train leaves Fiumicino every 15 minutes to cover the 20 miles to Termini.

Trains leave Rome Fiumicino station every 15 minutes for Rome Termini — averaging 63 trains per day. The earliest train leaves Rome Fiumicino station at 5:20 a.m. The last train to Termini leaves Fiumicino at 11:35 p.m. 

If you buy your ticket online, keep a printout of your purchase to show on the train. However, if you buy your ticket at a kiosk or ticket desk, you must validate your ticket at one of the machines on the train platform before you board! These ticket machines are small and easy to miss. If you don’t find one, ask a station employee or local to point it out to you.

All Leonardo Express trains are equipped with air conditioning and electrical outlets at your seat to charge devices. Take note that there is no wi-fi available on these trains. Food and coffee are not served during this 32-minute trip. All trains on this route are wheelchair accessible. At the end of each car you’ll find a restroom and plenty of racks to store large luggage .

Leonardo Express in Rome: Everything you need to know

The Leonardo Express in Rome is certainly the most comfortable way to reach the center of Rome from Fiumicino Airport. This fast train will allow you to arrive in the center of Rome in less than 35 minutes, without any detours. In this article I will explain you everything you need to know about the Leonardo Express: Train schedules, buying tickets, how to get on the train plus, as always, some useful tips. Please note that the Leonardo Express is only available at Fiumicino airport. If you arrive at Ciampino airport or prefer another means of transport, you can consult this article .

Leonardo Express Rome: timetables, tickets and tips!

The Leonardo Express connects Fiumicino Airport with Termini Central Station in the heart of Rome. A direct journey without stopover takes about 35 minutes. The Leonardo Express trains are large enough and well laid out, so you can leave your belongings behind and enjoy the journey at your leisure. Since the train is direct, you don’t have to worry about your belongings. Also, there is no 1st or 2nd class, so you can settle wherever you like.

Leonardo Express Rome: Getting from the airport to the train station

Upon exiting the plane, go to the arrivals hall and follow the signs for “Uscita/Exit” (exit) and then “Treni” (trains). Once you are in front of the escalator, go down to the bottom floor and up the long corridor to the next escalator. At the top of this escalator is the train station. It takes about 10/-15 minutes to walk to the train.

Good to know: Since the airport station is the departure station of the Leonardo Express, you don’t have to worry about which direction to take, there is only one. The second advantage is that you will always find a seat!

Leonardo Express Rome: Where can I buy train tickets?

You can buy your tickets at the station of Fiumicino Airport or in advance on the Internet. Online purchases provide a little peace of mind and less stress for many. There are 3 points of sale on site: at the tobacco store, at the ticket office or at the ticket machines. All tickets are sold at the same price.

1. Tickets in the tobacco shop

You can buy your tickets at the tobacconist in the station hall. The tobacconist’s is called “Tabacchi” and has a red front with the sign “Train tickets”.

2. Tickets at the ticket office

The ticket office is located in the station hall, to the left of the tobacconist. You can recognize the ticket office by the blue sign that says “Zugfahrkarten / Biglietto Treno”.

3. Tickets at the ticket machines

The ticket machines are also located in the station hall. They are red and bear the name of the Italian railroad company “Trenitalia”.

The vending machines are very easy to use and practical. You must first select the language, for example English, the destination (Termini station) and then the departure time. For an immediate departure you just click on “confirm”. Please also note that the tickets are valid for one day. You must then indicate the number of passengers and whether you are traveling with a pet.

Payment can be made by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, AE) or in cash. You have the possibility to buy a return ticket directly as well. However, be sure to enter the correct information: the correct date and time of return, since the tickets are dated, and the correct departure station (Termini). If you make a mistake, don’t panic right away! Tickets can be exchanged at the ticket office. Alternatively, on the day of your departure, you can buy your return tickets at the ticket machine in Termini station. The station has many points of sale and ticket machines, so you won’t have to wait long.

Leonardo Express Rome: How much does a ticket cost?

The ticket for the Leonardo Express costs 14 euros for adults and 12 euros for 4-12 year olds. Children under 4 travel for free. Good to know: The price of the ticket is the same in all the mentioned points of sale.

Leonardo Express Rome: Train schedules

The Leonardo Express runs daily without interruption. The Fiumicino Airport – Termini Station line runs from 6:35 am to 11:38 pm, with a train every 15 to 30 minutes (depending on peak times). Trains departing from Termini Station to Rome Fiumicino Airport run between 5:50 am and 10:50 pm. One train every 15 minutes (peak times) or 30 minutes.

Leonardo Express: How long does the journey from the airport to Rome take?

Depending on the time of day, the journey between the airport and the city center takes between 30 and 35 minutes.

Leonardo Express Rome: Good to know

Tip 1: validate your ticket twice.

To get to the platform, you must first pass through the turnstiles. To do this, you must validate your ticket at the turnstile so that the doors open. This action only allows you to access the platforms, but it does not mean that your ticket is validated. The machines for validating tickets are located behind the turnstile at the beginning of the platform (green boxes).

Tip 2: Regular checks

The fine for using the Leonardo Express without a ticket is €100. Since there are regular ticket checks on the trains and the train goes to Termini station without stopping, it is better to buy a ticket beforehand.

Tip 3: Storage space for luggage

The Leonardo Express has several luggage racks. If you are traveling with light luggage (small bags or cabin suitcases), you can take it directly to your seat. For larger luggage, there are several marked locations on the train for suitcases and travel bags.

Tip 4: Power outlets to charge your battery

If your smartphone or laptop is empty when you arrive in Rome, you can recharge your electronic devices directly on the Leonardo Express. In each row of seats you will find two sockets under the window. Very practical!

Hi Laurence, it is less than 150km to get from Rome to San Donato. You can rent a car or use public transport: a train from Roma Termini to Cassino and then a bus that starts fourth times a day.

Hello, I seem to be having a very silly problem trying to buy tickets from Roma Termini to the FCO Airport. Every website says that direct trains are available throughout the day, but when I try to buy tickets, the ONLY available time slot is 13:05. Am I doing something wrong? Our flight is at 11:46 am, so we would like to be at the airport before 9:30 am. The 13:05 train cannot possibly be the only one, can it?

the Leonardo Express is a train. What you bought on the website of Trenitalia is another ticket to go to the center of Roma with the bus (that’s why auto bus LE084).

A couple of questions:

– Can tickets purchased online be changed of time more than once? Our flight was rescheduled twice, we could manage online the first time change for Leonardo Express but the option is not showing anymore to do a second change.

– Is it possible to catch a later train than the one booked? If so, is it s only possible to catch one 1,5 hours after the initial scheduled time (as your previously mentioned)? E.g departure 8 am, is it ok if we pick up a train at 11 am or should we do 9:30 am at most?

– Do tickets online need to be validated twice or only once (before the turnstiles)?

You do have to choose a time slot for the tickets (be sure to arrive 15 minutes before the time indicated). Trains leave every hour or so ans travel time is 32 minutes.

What happens if you book in advance on-line, but miss the time slot because of flight delays? Would the tickets still be valid for the next available train?

Your ticket is valid for 1.5 hours after the initial scheduled time of use. If you are delayed for more than 1.5 hours, you must go to one of the trenitalia ticket offices and they will take care of you (but you will have to wait in line).

Leonardo Express Airport train

The Leonardo Express Airport train is a dedicated airport train taking 30 minutes to reach the centre of Rome (Termini Station) with a frequency of every 15 minutes.

The only reason not to use the service is cost, it is around double the cost of competing bus and local train options.

The Leonardo Express is simply the best (fastest and most comfortable) public transport transfer between Fiumicino Airport and Central Rome (Termini Station).

The cheapest public transport option between the airport and city centre of Rome is the Terravision Bus , one of four competing airport bus services that also terminate at Termini Station. This is about a third of the cost of the Leonardo Express but takes at least twice as long and is not as frequent.

Fiumicino Airport

At Fiumicino Airport, the station is part of the passenger terminal complex. Although it can be a fair walk out to the station area it is undercover with moving walkways.

At Rome Airport the train station is well signposted within the passenger terminals. It's a 5-10-minute walk, but you've probably already walked a similar distance from your aircraft to baggage retrieval and customs.

The way is totally undercover using moving walkways and escalators/lifts.

Once at the Fiumicino Station there are ticket machines, the official ticket desk and three or four other independent outlets that all sell tickets for the Leonardo Express train.

Note: The station has three platforms and other local trains also terminate here. So do check which platform the next Leonardo Express train departs from, even if there is only one train in the station.

Rome Termini Station

At Termini Station in Rome all trains arrive and depart from platforms 23 or 24 in the main area of the station - close to the left luggage office at the station.

Termini Station as well as being the main railway station for Rome also houses the main local bus station and is the hub where the Metro system radiates out from. It is also the biggest district of hotel accommodation for all budgets. It's a very convenient place to stay.

The station is like a small city with a large shopping centre, countless restaurants and facilities like left luggage.

Rome Fiumicino Airport FL1 local train (formerly FR)

The city of Rome has a basic regional commuter train network of 8 lines, called the FL1 service.

It terminates at Rome's main airport Fiumicino, provides a stopping service circling around the city. Fiumicino Airport is west of Rome, the FL1 circles around the south of Rome then up through the eastern suburbs.

Along the way it interchanges with all the other FL services, the Rome Metro and countless local bus and tram routes. However it doesn't go into the centre of Rome and the main train station Termini Station, but you can connect to another FL1 train which does.

The Leonardo Express is simply the fastest and most comfortable public transport transfer between Fiumicino Airport and Central Rome (Termini Station) for which you pay a significant price premium.

The FL1 is just one of the alternatives available to people who prefer to save money for a slower, more tedious airport transfer. The cheapest transfer option between airport and city centre is the Terravision Airport Bus .

Airport bus services

There are very cheap bus services to both of Rome's airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino. The market leader is currently Terravision to both airports.

The Rome terminus for all the airport bus services from both airports is Termini Station, the same railway station that the dedicated airport train from Fiumicino Airport arrives.

Unfortunately you cannot use Rome public transport tickets to either of the Rome airports by bus or train.

The area around Termini also has the largest choice of hotel accommodation in Rome from hostels right up to luxury hotels.

FIUMICINO AIRPORT TO ROME CITY CENTRE TRANSFER OPTIONS

Fiumicino Airport

The Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, also known as Fiumicino (FCO), is Rome international airport and is the one more commonly used. It offers a wide selection of both domestic and international flights.

Serving tens of millions of passengers a year, it’s the busiest airport in Italy and also ranks high on the list of busiest airports in Europe. It’s a well-structured and efficient airport full of all the amenities you made need to make your passage through here as safe and comfortable as possible.

Location and Transport

So you’ve made it to Rome. You’ve cleared passport control, got your bags, and now beauty, history, and amazing food await. Let’s get you there as soon as possible. Here are your main options from Rome airport: 

Taxi ranks are located at the exits of both Terminals 1 and 3. Follow the yellow signs for Taxi, where you will join a line outside managed by FCO staff directing you to the rank (shown below).

Because you’re worth it. And you’ve got a full itinerary, meaning you don’t have any time to waste figuring out train journeys (see below if you change your mind though). Fares are currently capped at 50 euros in Rome city centre. 

Don’t 

In peak season, there will be long lines outside the terminal, but there should be an abundance of taxis, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long. You’re quite likely to hit traffic on one of the main arteries taking you into Rome, meaning your journey could take anywhere between 40 minutes and an hour and a half. 

Insider tip : You can pay by card. However, sometimes Italian merchants are reluctant to take card payments. That said, a recent law obliges them to now, so check first that they’ll take a card. If they make a face, just insist or move on to the next taxi. 

2. Train, option 1: Leonardo Express

Follow the signs for the train advising you to take the elevator up to the second level (Arrival is on level 0). This will take you to a bridge-tunnel that connects both airport terminals with the train station. There are moving walkways too. It’s approximately a seven-minute walk to the station in total.

At Arrivals (at both Terminals 1 and 3), you will see helpful signs like these directing you to the elevators to head up to level 2, where you can walk over to the train station.

Trains leave every 30 minutes and take you straight to Rome’s main train station Termini in around 30 minutes. Perfect if you’re travelling light and/or your hotel is located close to Termini . 

A good option if you’re in San Lorenzo or Reppublica too.

Leonardo Express train

The Leonardo Express takes you to Rome’s main train transport hub Termini; an overwhelming behemoth of a train station. Not exactly the ideal start to your Dolce Vita getaway. 

If, on the other hand, you’re travelling reasonably light and you’re keen to sink your teeth into some Eurostyle hustle and bustle, by all means, go for it.

The metro will be extremely busy in peak season, so not ideal for large suitcases. (FYI, Elevators and escalators are frequently out of order on the Roman metro).

Insider tip : Don’t follow the herd and wait in line at the airport ticket machines to get your tickets; you can get them at the airport train station itself.

Plan B. Humans are also on hand at the Train Station ticket office in case the machines are out of order or especially indiscernible after your long flight. 

Trenitalia (the national trainline) is wonderful, but their ticket machines can be somewhat temperamental or just a bit slow sometimes.

Insider tip : Validate your ticket. Paper tickets need to be time stamped. Ticket inspectors can be real sticklers for this sort of thing in Italy. Fail to do it and risk a hefty fine, depending on how benevolent the inspector is feeling that day. 

Align your ticket to the left of the ticket-validating machine and wait for a ping. You’ll find the machines at the beginning of each platform.

From Outside the Airport

If you get a bit sidetracked and end up following the exit signs which lead you outside instead, fear not. The station is closest to Terminal 3, which is right next to Terminal 1,  just a 4-minute walk away. 

Follow the signs for the train until you need to cross the road, as shown below. The station is marked by the Trenitalia symbol (which looks more like a slanted ‘f’ than a ‘t’) on the building to the right of the carpark labelled D.

Enter and go up the escalator. You’ll arrive at the same place had you used the bridge-tunnel from inside the Terminal.

2) Train, Option 2: Regional Train

Another option is to take the cheaper regional train from the airport . If you’ve done your research and have a good idea of where your accommodation is, you may find that one of the stations serviced by the regional train is more convenient. Ostiense, Trastevere or even Tiburtina may serve you better than Termini.

Your journey will cost just 8-10 Euros, and depending on where you’re going, will take between 30 and 47 minutes. The trains are modern, air-conditioned, and come with heaps of space and USB outlets. Perfect for charging your devices while you’re on the move.

Again if you’ve got lots of luggage and you need to take a connecting metro or bus ride after the train journey, think twice. Google Maps will offer recommended routes, but very often, these will not reflect the reality of the situation.

Buses won’t come when Google Maps says they will, nor will walking routes always be as straightforward as they appear. It might be tempting to save a few Euros, but in the long run, you might end up in a confusing mess. 

Insider tip : Don’t wait in line at the painfully slow ticket machines. Download the Trenitalia app. Especially if you plan to be in Rome for a few days and fancy a spontaneous day trip. You can check train times on the fly and pay for them on your phone. 

Tickets come in the form of QR codes, which you either scan at ticket barriers or show to ticket inspectors on the train. You won’t ever have to worry about validating your ticket.

3) Bus (Coach)

Buses leave from Polo Bus Station, located at the end of Terminal 3 (as you exit arrivals, turn right and keep going). You’ll see various bus stands; the supporting columns are all numbered, and the first dozen or so are dedicated to regional travel.

To get to central Rome, head towards bus stop 12- on your right, you’ll see the ticket office where the three main bus companies will be vying for your attention. They’ll be offering you pretty much the same product, with buses leaving at staggered times.

You can’t beat the price, currently at 6 Euros one way. Buses are frequent, comfortable, and air-conditioned. If you arrive after midnight, this will be your only option, as trains don’t run into the night. 

You may hit traffic which can be frustrating, and for just two Euros more, you could’ve got the regional train. 

Terminals (Arrival and Departure)

Fiumicino Airport is equipped with two functional terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Terminal 2 was demolished so that Terminal 1 could be expanded, and Terminal 5 is being refurbished and is currently not in use.

There is a free shuttle service connecting the two terminals, which can take up to 15 minutes.

This terminal serves both domestic flights (within Italy) and flights that travel within the Schengen area (the 26 countries in Europe that have removed border controls).

All other airlines utilize Terminal 3, which is much larger. These include some domestic and Schengen flights, as well as all Non-Schengen flights and flights to and from the United States and Israel.

At the time of writing, we are still subjected to 100 ml (3.38 fl oz) liquid rules in cabin luggage- this includes pesto, I’m afraid. The usual laptops and electronics to be taken out of bags while going through detectors rule still applies.

Food and Shopping

Fiumicino is an award-winning airport, and its clever marketing team is dubbing “The Careport” – see what they did there? In truth, FCO is part airport, part luxury shopping centre. From pizza to Prada, Cartier to KFC; it is truly vast and caters to most people’s needs.

Terminal 3 has its own Vatican Museums souvenir store for any last-minute gifts. Unfortunately, it’s also impossible to find a sandwich that costs less than 7 Euros. 

Insider tip:  You’re far better off getting some food in town before getting to the airport. You’ll cry when you think of the Roman thin crust or the white pizza and mortadella you could’ve bought from the forno near your hotel if only you’d left ten minutes earlier.

You’re wiser now, and you’ll know that this airport tourist pizza, while still good, is nothing like the real deal. 

Terminal 1 Food Court at Arrivals

However, if you’ve got Euros to burn and you’re flying from Terminal 1 (Area A), internationally renowned Eataly makes an appearance on the second-floor plaza.

Gourmet snacks, pasta dishes, as well as oils and wines to take home, are available here. 

The usual gelato and coffee are on offer, too, and if you’ve had your fill of all things Italian, you’ll find KFC on the first-floor plaza.

Head up to the second floor of Area E if you’re flying from Terminal 3, where you’ll be pretty much ordered to enjoy your pizza.

However, if you’re not in the mood for bossy pizza, you’ll also find a wider range of restaurants, from Ajisen Ramen to Bottega Prosecco Bar and Beercode; a beer and burger restaurant where one hopes their burgers are better than their puns. 

For those with a gluten allergy, many restaurants offer gluten-free options. A helpful list is available on the airport website, which you can find here .

Fiumicino Airport is also home to a varied selection of lounges where you can comfortably pass the time while waiting for your flight. Once reserved exclusively for elite members of airlines’ loyalty programs, some of the lounges have now opened their doors to all passengers, provided they pay the access fee.

Prima Vista Lounges

There are two Prima Vista Lounges, both located in Terminal 3. One for domestic/Schengen flights, the other for Non-Schengen flights.

Domestic/Schengen Lounge

• Location : Departure area, gates A1-A10
• Opening hours : 4:45 am – 8:45 pm
• Access : Available to all business class and frequent flyer passengers and to all paying passengers (30€ adults, 15€ for children over the age of 2)

There are also members-only lounges available to passengers of ITA Airways, Emirates, British Airways, and of Star Alliance.

ATMs and Currency Exchange

There are various locations where you can withdraw money and exchange currency throughout both terminals.

Info-Points

There are information points dotted throughout the terminals. Not only do they provide useful information to passengers but they are also equipped with fax machines and photocopiers.

Medical Assistance and Pharmacies

First aid is available 24/7 to all passengers if needed. In an emergency call 06 6595 3133-4.

There is also a pharmacy located on the 2cd floor of Terminal 3, and another one that only sells non-prescription medication in boarding area E.

Disabled Facilities

The airport is well-equipped to help disabled guests with transport through the airport as long as they have pre-booked assistance with their airline beforehand. Priority procedures are also in place if needed for security and passport control.

The infrastructure of the airport has been improved for passengers with reduced mobility. As well as having plenty of elevators, there are also easily accessible desks and disabled stalls in each set of toilets.

There are also plenty of disabled parking spaces in both the short-term and long-term parking bays.

Religious Services

There is a Christian Catholic Chapel in the Terminal 1 departure hall, and a multi-faith prayer room in the Terminal 3 arrivals hall (temporarily closed for renovations).

Luggage Storage

Luggage storage is located in the International Arrivals area in Terminal 3 and is open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. It costs 10€ per luggage for 24h.

Nursery and Kids Area

Four nurseries are available (with changing tables and cots) and are located near E11 and E44. 

Children’s play areas can be found in the baggage claim areas of Terminal 3 and Terminal 1. There’s one near Belt 10 just after the Terminal 3 passport controls and another near Belt 16 in Terminal 1.

Smoking Area

A smoking area can be found in boarding area E.

Free Wifi is available throughout the airport.

Early morning flight, layover, or late arrival? If you’re in need of a place to sleep that’s near Fiumicino Airport, you have some options to choose from.

Rome Airport Transportation

There are a number of ways to get to the city of Rome, from Fiumicino Airport and vice-versa. The airport is located approximately 30 km away from the city center, but it is relatively easy to get to. You can take either a train, bus, or taxi or hire a private transfer. There’s also plenty of parking available if you choose to come by car.

Insider tip 

Google Maps will show you that Fiumicino town is only 3km from the airport and, therefore, only a 40-minute walk, so you might be tempted to saunter over on a sunny day for a spot of Italian fish ‘n’ chips. 

Do not attempt to walk as there are no pedestrian paths- it’s all highways and can be quite dangerous. 

Download the Moovit App to check if any local bus services are running – it’s far more reliable than Google or Apple Maps for transport options in Italy. Otherwise, a taxi is your best bet.

Rome Fiumicino Airport Train (FCO)

Reach Rome city centre easily from Fiumicino Airport by Trenitalia railway services.

From the railway station, located within the airport area close to the arrival and departure terminals, you can reach the city centre by frequent Trenitalia connections.

Leonardo Express

Leonardo Express train is a direct and non-stop service between Rome Airport and Termini Station (Rome’s train hub) which covers the route in only 32 minutes with a 30 minutes frequency.

The train shuttle service is guaranteed even in the event of strike, since it may be replaced with bus service.

Trains are equipped with seating and rest rooms for passengers with reduced mobility.

- Rome Airport: Close to the arrival and departure terminals. - Termini Station: Platforms 23 and 24.

- Rome Airport: From 06:23 am to 11:23 pm. - Termini Station: 05:35 am to 10:35 pm.

There are lots of connections to other stations in Rome. Departures are every 15 minutes during weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends or holidays.

From Roma Airport passengers can get to other cities such as Florence, Bologna, Venice, Genoa, Pisa, etc.

Frecciarossa

There are four high speed trains to Venice with a travel time of about 4 hours.

Frecciargento

There are a total of two high speeds trains that connect FCO Airport with Florence, Pisa, La Spezia and Genoa.

Travel time to Genova is up to 4h 27 minutes.

Tickets are also sold at the ticket offices at the station, self-service kiosks, authorised travel agencies, among others.
