Meet the Experts: Resume Building

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated every corner of the adventure travel industry –resulting in employee and contractor layoffs and furloughs at all levels. When and how the industry recovers remain uncertain. There is a consensus adventure travel will be one of the fastest sectors to regain its footing. However, some companies may never recover, and the recovery speed for those that survive will vary greatly depending on the destination, type of company, traveler demographic, and a company’s resources.

12 Best Jobs Boards for Outdoor & Adventure Jobs

Several go-to internet job boards publish outdoor adventure travel jobs in the United States and overseas for those who want to live an adventurous life in the world’s most stunning locations. This list of adventure travel job boards has it all: cold climate jobs, hot climate jobs, and everything in between.

Seasonal jobs, vagabonding, nomadic travel, summer jobs, work camping—whatever you want to call it—you’ve chosen a unique road in life, and it’s not always easy to traverse. Employee housing is sometimes included in these sorts of positions. Some even provide three hot meals every day. And with a built-in community of employees living together, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure is certain.

1. Mountain Jobs

MountainJobs.com is the number one job board in the United States for eastern and western mountain towns. It receives more than twice as much traffic as the closest competition (about 9000 visitors per month). If you are looking for jobs in small mountain towns (ski resorts, mountain lodges, national parks, etc) then this is the site for you. Working in a mountain town offers various advantages apart from the primary goal of work or earning a living. Being in the mountains during or after the season may be an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true, with the added benefit of being paid to be someplace you like. Employees are chosen for particular positions based on their total skill, experience, and education.

2. Diversify Outdoors

You first notice the bright, relaxed grin that greets you when you visit the Diversify Outdoors Job Board. A pleasant face greeting you before you begin your job hunt is a friendly reminder that the ideal outdoor job is available for everyone who applies. Jobs like Seasonal Horticulturists and Summer Camp Counselors are available.

Diversify Outdoors already has a fantastic reputation for recognizing individuals making a difference in the outside world, so it’s no surprise that their job board would carry on that tradition by linking people to inclusive outdoor & adventure jobs. “The Diversify Outdoors Job Board connects individuals in our community to businesses and NGOs who care about diversity and are actively seeking BIPOC applications,” says Danielle Williams, the creator of the DO job board. It’s one method of getting around some of the industry’s gatekeeping.”

While the site does feature both part-time and temporary opportunities, it may also be a fantastic resource for people wishing to start a full-time career. In addition, it’s a must-visit site for people looking for a serious career move, with opportunities like Program Instructor and Director of Finance and Administration.

3. Greening Youth Foundation Careers

The Greening Youth Foundation Careers has always prioritized inspiring HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges, Universities, and Internships) students and disenfranchised youth to connect with the environment by supporting vocations in biology, sociology, history, and science. In addition, GYF job candidates may be certain that they will discover jobs that support a more sustainable and safeguarded future for nature thanks to a specific collaboration with State and National Park administrations.

Getting active with the Park System may be daunting since roles are frequently considered elite and desirable. The Greening Youth Foundation alleviates this apprehension by informing job applicants that they are qualified for these roles and that GYF can assist them in obtaining them.

4. Camber Outdoors Job Board

Camber Outdoors, like many other job boards featured, welcomes job searchers with a dedication to inclusion and diversity in the workplace. According to the website, the jobs they advertise “…know that attracting, retaining, and advancing diverse people will generate more innovation and solve larger issues.”

Because most positions are classified by firm or organization, this site is ideal for people wishing to work for a particular brand. And with over 250 firms to select from, you’ll never be short of opportunities. For example, REI, Black Diamond, and Gear Aide are included in Chamber Outdoors, as are groups like Arizona Conversation and Oregon Outdoor School, which concentrate on education rather than branding. Camber Outdoors can link you with the perfect firm in any industry.

5. Green Jobs Board

Green Jobs Board is  an excellent resource for advancing your career in the environmental field. With ties with well-known organizations such as the Sierra Club and Friends of the Earth, you’ll be able to interact with organizations with a history of environmental preservation and conservation.

Green job board is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a serious full-time career in the environmental field since many of the positions advertised are for degree holders or experienced experts. These roles, with names like Manager, Director, Organizer, and Coordinator, will immerse you in the science, policy, and technology underlying outdoor enjoyment and preservation.

6. BackdoorJobs

BackdoorJobs is a vast, reputable, well-established job board dedicated particularly to adventurers in the United States. They provide a fantastic assortment of jobs for outdoor lovers. Camp and ranch roles, agricultural labor, conservation, hiking and biking, cross-country travel, and a few luxury vacations overseas are all available. They also offer more tame customer service opportunities for nature enthusiasts who don’t want to work outdoors.

Some of the jobs mentioned here will need more outdoor experience, but there are also entry-level opportunities.

7. Coolworks

Coolwork is a popular destination for seasoned travel professionals. They often include outdoor adventure jobs in their job listings. They strongly emphasize the western United States and Alaska, where nature enthusiasts have several opportunities. Many advertised positions provide accommodation and board, making moving from place to place as easy as packing your belongings.

Many of the jobs featured on CoolWorks are in the hospitality and guest service industries, and we consider them “Jobs in Great Places.” There are also several opportunities for outdoor adventure, education, conservation, and environmental work.

Employers frequently use this website outside of the service business. Examples include Conservation Corps, Organic Farms and Gardens, Alaska Fisheries, Wilderness Therapy Programs, Outdoor Educational Programs, and Non-Profit Organizations.

8. Adventure jobs

Adventure jobs is an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that focuses on the demands of the outdoor sector. Employers from around the globe may submit and manage available jobs and potential applicants during the application process.

Multiple recruiting managers may post positions, monitor applications, and discuss applicants. Communication with prospects, checking application progress, and even introducing new prospective candidates to open jobs are all part of this. Adventureworkers.com is your one-stop shop for locating the perfect personnel for all of your requirements!

Adventure Job Board is a medium-sized job board for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. Most of the job is adventure-based, such as sea kayaking and horseback riding, although there are also sales and hospitality positions available. In addition, there are sometimes job postings for positions overseas.

They have worked and lived in some of the most beautiful areas on the planet. The experiences that come with a seasonal and full-time job in daring situations are life-changing. They created this Applicant Tracking System for the outdoor business to share such chances with enthusiastic job searchers while connecting companies with the finest available prospects.

Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation for the outdoors and outdoor activities promotes the importance of outdoor recreation. They urge everyone to come outside and participate in outdoor activities. Formerly known as the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation, the organization was founded in 1996 as a non-profit organization representing a coalition of outdoor recreation organizations to lobby on behalf of the sector.

In Australia, a small board called QORF (Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation) encourages individuals to “enjoy life outside” by taking up careers as expedition guides, field teachers, and other such adventure professions.

One of the primary reasons for founding QORF / Outdoors Queensland was to facilitate dialogue on outdoor recreation-related problems between various user groups and levels of government. Outdoors Queensland reflects the range of viewpoints in the outdoor recreation industry on any topic and does not, in most situations, seek agreement. Instead, outdoors Queensland allows outdoor recreation users to exchange ideas, debate concerns, network, influence policy, and promote outdoor recreation.

10. Good Work

Good Work focuses on “green” occupations in the environmental area. Jobs with employee housing aren’t their specialty, although several are available on-site. They include “typical” ski resort occupations, snowshoe excursions, agricultural labor, conservation, and a few internships. The majority of roles are in Canada, with a handful outside.

For over 21 years, GoodWork has been assisting Canada’s environmental community in prospering and growing. They assist green businesses in finding committed employees, managers, consultants, board members, interns, and volunteers.

They are a mission-driven organization that works with environmental groups and activists from coast to coast.

11. Anywork Anywhere

Anywork Anywhere has assisted thousands of individuals in finding their ideal job abroad since 2001, with ongoing opportunities in beautiful places worldwide. Sophie Glandorf and Graham Stanbury, with ten years of experience in HR/Recruitment and the travel business, took over the company in 2018. They wanted to establish a brand that merged both industries to enable adventurous job seekers to expand their careers abroad.

The Anywork Anywhere staff is scattered across many countries, with the quaint HQ located in an old school in Amsterdam’s West End. Their travel-obsessed small company contains seven different nationalities from all around Europe. Most of the team has lived and worked abroad, so they understand the adventure their applicants take.

12. WanderJobs

WanderJobs is a large job board that lists outdoor adventure jobs in the United States and internationally, many of which are entry-level. For example, ski and snowboard instructor employment, trail guide jobs, water sports, boating jobs, ranch and wilderness lodge jobs, and more are available. There are also many hotels, food & beverage, and customer service opportunities for lighter travelers.

Unlike many other boards, jobs must be vetted by a staff member before they are listed. This filter prohibits large pay-to-work and pay-to-volunteer-vacation organizations from extorting money from job searchers. All positions are compensated (this is not a volunteer or work-exchange board) and must offer employee housing.

Arival is pleased to welcome all of its international attendees to the USA and would like to make the process as seamless as possible.

If you are traveling to the United States for tourism or business for 90 days or less, you may be eligible to visit the US without a visa if your country is participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

  • Consult with business associates
  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • Settle an estate
  • Negotiate a contract

Learn more about Business Travel to the United States on a visitor visa here

  • Vacation (holiday)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Learn more about Business Travel to the United States on a visitor visa here

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary by U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please consult the instructions on the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate website .

Complete the Online Visa Application

  • Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160 . You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must be in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate , but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Click the button below for more information on wait times, required documentation, interview tips, extending your stay and more.

Taxes. The fees may be subject to sales tax, and value-added tax, or other taxes and duties, which, if applicable, will be clearly stated and charged to You in addition to the fees.

Electronic Communications. Once You have completed Your registration, You will receive Your registration confirmation by email. Please ensure that Your valid email is entered correctly on the registration form. Be sure to check Your junk email box, too, if any of Your Virtual Event email(s) are caught by spam filters. Arival shall not be liable for mis-entered email addresses or other data.

If You do not receive Your registration confirmation and fail to notify us by email at least 24 hours prior to the event, Arival shall not be liable if you cannot view the event live.

You will receive essential Event information for registered attendees electronically at the email address provided on Your registration form.

In addition, You will also be subscribed as an Arival Insiders Free Access member if You are not already a member, which includes notifications of future events as well as the Arival newsletter and other communications. If You would like to opt-out of any of these benefits, a link is provided in each email to provide the ability to opt out.

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to [email protected] . Cancellations outside of 60 days shall be refunded in full without an administrative fee. Cancellations received inside 60 days of the published event start date are subject to loss of all monies paid with no credit for future events. Registration fee refund coverage may be offered.  Name change requests and ticket transfers are subject to a 100.00 change fee. The currency of refunds and fees will be the same as the currency in which tickets are sold.

Virtual Events. Please note that you are still responsible for payment if You do not cancel and do not access the Virtual Event. In no event shall Arival be obligated to refund all or a portion of the registration fee.

Health & Safety Protocols. Arival is committed to producing a successful, productive, and, above all, safe Event for all Attendees, Arival staff, and hotel staff. We establish on-site preparedness plans and health & safety protocols to allow each attendee to feel as safe as possible and reduce the possibility of COVID transmission. Final protocols will be determined by 60 days prior to the event and will be based on recommendations from national, local and other health authorities.

By registering for the event, you confirm that You will abide by the safety measures that Arival puts into place. Failure to abide by the safety measures may result in the cancellation of Your registration with no refund.

Policies for attendance at the Event will be subject to change as conditions change regarding Covid-19. A final determination of policies will be made no later than 70 days prior to the event start date. This provides You with one week to cancel Your registration if You are not willing or able to comply with the Event policies. Arival reserves the right to set the safety measures at its sole discretion.

An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the CDC, senior citizens and guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

BY ATTENDING ARIVAL, YOU VOLUNTARILY ASSUME ALL RISKS AND AGREE TO HOLD HARMLESS, RELEASE AND INDEMNIFY ARIVAL, ARIVAL’S VENDORS, AND SUPPLIERS FOR ANY AND ALL LIABILITY RELATED TO EXPOSURE TO COVID-19 INCLUDING SERIOUS HEALTH AILMENTS AND DEATH.

Each Attendee agrees that during Arival, he/she shall conduct themselves professionally and courteously at all times with respect to Arival staff, sponsors, and Attendees. If an Attendee fails to comply with these expectations or behaves in a rude or unacceptable manner, Arival reserves the right to terminate the Attendee’s continued attendance at the Arival Event and will revoke their credentials. The Attendee agrees to return the credentials to an Arival representative upon request and will lose all fees paid to Arival. Expenses resulting from this revocation of Arival credentials are the sole responsibility of the Attendee. See our full Code of Conduct here.

By registering for an Arival Event ticket, you agree not to sell, trade, transfer, or share your access link and/or code unless the Organizer grants such transfer. If Arival determines that You have violated this policy, Arival may cancel Your access, retain any payments made by You, and ban You from future Events, in addition to any other actions deemed appropriate.

Attendees may not record or broadcast audio or video of sessions at Arival Events.

Arival reserves the right to deny participation to anyone who engages in or is reputed to engage in unethical or non-compliant business practices

The undersigned hereby acknowledges that Arival provides various companies with the opportunity to sponsor and host a variety of functions and social events during Arival (herein “Sponsored Event”) and that these sponsors pay an additional fee to host these events. Therefore, the undersigned agrees not to organize, sponsor, or operate any function, social event, or gathering of ten or more attendees, either directly or indirectly, during Arival. Should acts of God, acts of war or terrorism, pandemic, strikes, lockouts, labor disputes, inability to obtain labor or material, governmental restrictions or regulations, judicial order or other casualty or cause, not within the control of Arival make it impractical or impossible for the Arival Event to be held, Arival shall have the right, without obligation, to select an alternate date and venue for in-person events, and in such case Attendee agrees to participate per the terms and conditions herein.

If Arival is prevented from carrying out its obligations as it pertains to the Event for which You registered as a result of any cause beyond its control, or such Event cannot be conducted Live or Virtually due to any cause, not within the control of the Organizer, (collectively a “Force Majeure”) Arival shall have the right to immediately terminate the affected Event without liability and shall be relieved of its obligations to Registrant. If an affected Virtual Event is terminated due to a Force Majeure occurrence before the first day of the Virtual Event, then Arival will make every effort to reschedule the affected Virtual Event, and Your registration fee will be applied to the rescheduled Virtual Event. In such case, as the Virtual Event cannot be rescheduled within 60 days as a result of any Force Majeure event, Arival shall have the right to immediately and permanently terminate the affected Virtual Event without liability and shall be relieved of its obligations to Registrant.

For purposes hereof, the phrase “cause not within the control of the Organizer” shall include failures of a software or issue with the hosting or other required platform in the case of virtual events, or in the case of all events both virtual and in-person shall include fire, casualty, flood, epidemic, earthquake, explosion or accident, blockage, embargo, inclement weather, governmental restraints, restraints or orders of civil defense or military authorities, act of public enemy, riot or civil disturbance or commotion, malicious damage, sabotage, vandalism, acts of terrorism, or other similar activities, strike, lockout, boycott or other labor dispute or disturbance, inability to secure sufficient labor, technical or other personnel, absence of premises required for the Exhibition, failure, impairment or lack of adequate transportation facilities, inability to obtain or requisition or commandeering of necessary supplies or equipment, change in local, state or other law, ordinance, rule, order, decree or regulation, whether legislative, executive or judicial, and whether constitutional, or act of God and the words “act(s) of” shall include “threat of or perceived threat of”.

A Force Majeure event specifically includes the following:

  • If a local, county, state or national governmental authority issues any order or recommendation: (i) for individuals in the local government area of the scheduled Event to limit their time away from their residence or property (except for essential activities, functions, and businesses); (ii) for persons arriving at any airport from any one or more major cities or metropolitan areas (population greater than 500,000) to isolate or self-quarantine for any period of time (even if subject to certain exceptions) when the total of originating cities represents 5% or greater of total event attendance; (iii) to restrict public gatherings in enclosed spaces to less than 400 people in the scheduled local government area.

All intellectual property rights in and to the Event, the Event content, and all materials distributed at or in connection with the Event are owned by Arival or the Event sponsors or speakers presenting at the event. You may not use or reproduce or allow anyone to use or reproduce any trademarks or other trade names appearing at the Event, in any Event content, or in any materials distributed at or in connection with the Event for any reason without the prior written permission of Arival.

For the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this Agreement shall be deemed to vest in you any legal or beneficial right in or to any trademarks or other intellectual property rights owned or used under license by Arival or any of its affiliates; nor does this Agreement grant to You any right or license to any other intellectual property rights of Arival or its affiliates, all of which shall at all times remain the exclusive property of Arival and its affiliates.

You as Attendee hereby authorizes Arival to use, reproduce, and/or publish photographs and/or video that may pertain to the Attendee —including image, likeness, and/or voice without compensation. The Attendee understands that this material may be used in various publications, public affairs releases, recruitment materials, broadcast public service advertising (PSAs), or other related endeavors. This material may also appear on the Arival website, web blogs, social media pages, and posts. This authorization is continuous, and Arival may publish materials, use the Attendee’s name, photograph, and/or make reference to the undersigned in any manner that Arival deems appropriate in order to promote/publicize Arival events. The Attendee hereby releases Arival, its partners, employees, contractors and agents, the photographer/videographer, and any other associated vendors from any and all claims or liabilities.

Use of Likeness. By participating in the Event, You acknowledge and agree to grant the Event the right at the Event to record, film, live stream, photograph, or capture Your likeness in any media now available or hereafter developed and to distribute, broadcast, use, or otherwise globally to disseminate, in perpetuity, such media without any further approval from You or any payment to You. This grant to the Event includes, but is not limited to, the right to edit such media, the right to use the media alone or together with other information, and the right to allow others to use or disseminate the media.

Attendee and each of its agents, employees, and representatives, hereby waive and release any claim of any type or nature whatsoever against Arival and each of its agents, partners, employees, representatives, successors, and assigns, arising out of or relating to his/her/its participation in Arival or attendance at Arival, including, but not limited to personal injury, damage to personal property, theft, etc. Furthermore, Attendee for itself and each of its agents, employees, and representatives, hereby agree to indemnify and hold harmless Arival and each of its agents, partners, employees, representatives, successors, and assigns from any claim, demand, lawsuit, or dispute of every type or nature whatsoever (including their reasonable attorney’s fees and costs incurred), arising out of or relating to his/her participation in Arival or attendance at Arival.

This contract shall be governed by the laws of the State of Colorado. The prevailing party in any arbitration or litigation concerning the terms and conditions of this proposal shall be entitled to reasonable attorney’s fees and costs.

Arival gives no warranties in respect of any aspect of the Event or any materials related thereto or offered at the Event and, to the fullest extent possible under the laws governing this Agreement, disclaims all implied warranties, including but not limited to warranties of fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, timeliness, and merchantability. The Event is provided on an “as-is” basis. The views, opinions, and positions expressed by the speakers, attendees, or sponsors at the Event are theirs alone and do not necessarily reflect the views, opinions, or positions of Arival or any employee thereof. Arival makes no representations as to accuracy, completeness, timeliness, suitability, or validity of any information presented by speakers, attendees, or sponsors at an Arival Event and will not be liable for any errors, omissions, or delays in this information or any losses, injuries, or damages arising from its display or use. Arival does not endorse and expressly disclaims all liability relating to any of the products or services provided by speakers, attendees, or sponsors.

Except as required by law, neither Arival nor its affiliates shall be liable for any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential costs, damages, or losses arising directly or indirectly from the Event or other aspect related thereto or in connection with this Agreement.

The maximum aggregate liability of Event for any claim in any way connected with, or arising from, the Event or this Agreement, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise (including any negligent act or omission), shall be limited to the amount paid by you to Arival under this Agreement.

Arival’s failure to exercise any right provided for herein shall not be deemed a waiver of any further rights hereunder. Arival shall not be liable for any failure to perform its obligations hereunder where such failure results from any cause beyond Arival’s reasonable control. If any provision of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that this Agreement shall otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable. This Agreement is not assignable, transferable, or sub-licensable by you except with Arival’s prior written consent. This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, and the parties shall submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Colorado courts. A party that substantially prevails in action brought under this Agreement is entitled to recover from the other party its reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs. Both parties agree that this Agreement is the complete and exclusive statement of the mutual understanding of the parties and supersedes and cancels all previous written and oral agreements, communications, and other understandings relating to the subject matter of this Agreement and that all modifications must be in writing signed by both parties, except as otherwise provided herein. No agency, partnership, joint venture, or employment is created as a result of this Agreement, and you acknowledge that you do not have any authority of any kind to bind Arival in any respect whatsoever. a

Travel Nursing Job Boards: How They Work and Why They Matter

  • August 12, 2021

Travel nursing is a profession that came about due to shortages of registered nurses in different locations. To compensate for the lack of staff, distant nurses were called to come to fill in for a period of time and travel nursing was born! The nurses received these positions through job boards, which is why keeping up with them is so important. To better understand the function of job boards, here is why they are important and how they do what they do.

What Are Job Boards?

First, it is important to know what a job board is. Simply put, a job board is a database used by employers to advertise their job vacancies to job seekers. Companies have specifically listed their open positions, and they often accept job applications directly through their job board. There are two types of job boards that travel nurses can use:

  • Agency Job Boards: These are posted by the agency for their nurses to easily access job opportunities. You can access our job board here !
  • General Job Boards: These are third-party job boards like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Monster, CareerBuilder and many others.

Many job boards are integrated with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), which makes the application process a little easier and can help with a multitude of things like recruiting, human resources, billing, sales, credentialing, and more.

How Do Job Boards Work?

Essentially, recruiters and agents post job vacancies within their organization. They can describe the role and specify their requirements for future employees. Then, job seekers (AKA nurses) can search through the openings and, based on their own prerequisites, apply for the postings they are interested in. The process then follows the usual pattern—recruiters pursue the applications most appropriate for their needs, conduct interviews, etc.

With job boards, however, there is more information going on behind the scenes. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) help the flow of information remain organized and coherent so that the job board can automate the listings.

The job board fetches information about the position being advertised and compares the listing to its preexisting data for the agency (or whoever hosts it). In the process, the job board creates new jobs, updates existing jobs and removes closed jobs—keeping all of the information that you see up to date. For a job board to receive all of the details, employers have to grant access to their job opportunities for them to be listed on the site.

Why Are They Important?

Job boards are designed to streamline the application process and make finding a job easier. You can submit your resume to multiple jobs, which saves time and effort and refine your search to filter it down to the jobs you are actually interested in. Having the help of a job board on your side can expose you to many potential career opportunities that you may not have seen anywhere else—all with just one resume and a few clicks. Job boards provide the information you need to find your dream job and create new memories. It is important to always keep an eye on your board so you will never miss your next opportunity.

Kaiser Permanente is one of the largest healthcare employers in the state of California if not the largest. Kaiser is also one of the biggest users of travel nurses in California. In this blog post, we’ll provide some detailed information about travel nursing with Kaiser so that travel nurses know what to expect.

Kaiser Permanente is one of the largest healthcare organizations in America. In addition to their massive footprint in California, they also have operations in Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, and Washington DC. Like many large organizations, Kaiser is broken up into regional subdivisions. While each subdivision is certainly accountable to the larger organization, they also have a certain level of autonomy with respect to operations.

We’ll be focusing on the California market in this blog post. There are two divisions of Kaiser in California, Northern and Southern. This fact only affects travelers on rare occasions. We’ll point out the differences where applicable throughout this article.

Is Kaiser a good place for travel nurses?

Of course, the first question every nurse considering a travel job with Kaiser wants answered is whether or not Kaiser is a good place for travel nurses. Are Kaisers “travel nurse friendly?” Unfortunately, this question is too general to provide an an all encompassing answer.

Workplace culture plays a big role in whether or not a job will be travel nurse friendly. And culture has a lot to do with the specific people you work with. Therefore, you will find differences between hospitals, differences between Units in the same hospital, and even differences between shifts on the same unit.

In an effort to lock down an answer, many nurses turn to message boards and social media groups to ask for feedback about a specific unit at a specific hospital. Be careful with this approach. Like everyone else, nurses have varying opinions on what constitutes a good work environment. So if you choose to go this route, we recommend asking for specific details and discard general answers like, “It was great!” or “Don’t do it!”

Having placed more than 50 travelers at Kaiser facilities throughout California, I can offer the following anecdotal observations. I worked with more nurses who took permanent jobs with Kaiser than said they’d never work there again because it was so horrible. A strong majority of my Kaiser nurses accepted an extension or took an assignment at another Kaiser hospital.

Kaiser is also great at making sure travelers get their hours and they cancel shifts far less than other organizations. Moreover, Kaisers are really good about making sure that nurses receive their breaks. Sure, you’ll find some Kaisers that drop the ball in both cases, but as an organization, Kaiser is really good about breaks and hours.

Despite these positive indicators, the negative perception of traveling with Kaiser is quite pervasive. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, Kaiser’s system, HealthConnect,  is quite tedious. As a result, I received regular complaints of micro-managing and overbearing paperwork. However, these complaints almost always subsided once the nurse got the hang of things.

Second, many Kaiser hospitals run on 8 hour shifts but bring travel nurses in on 12 hour shifts because it’s so hard to find travelers that will work eights. This means travel nurses are always there during shift changes. This can disrupt the continuity of care. It also increases the likelihood of floating. Travelers may be floated to another unit or may be transferred to a new set of patients as the shifts change. This doesn’t mean that every traveler floats all the time but it does increase the likelihood. Moreover, some specialties are affected more than others.

Travel nursing companies that work with Kaiser

Kaiser hospitals in California consistently have needs for travelers. However, some Kaisers have more needs than others. The most consistent needs are at the facilities in Oakland, Santa Clara, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Perhaps the most important thing to know about landing an assignment with Kaiser in California is that American Mobile Network (AMN) is the Managed Service Provider for all Kaisers in California. This means that AMN has an exclusive contract with Kaiser to staff all their supplemental staffing needs. However, AMN has agreements with a large number of “Sub-vendors” who help fill Kaiser’s supplemental job openings. To be clear, sub-vendors are agencies that have a contract with AMN to provide staff for Kaiser hospitals. However, everything goes through AMN.

This is an important relationship for nurses to understand. By and large, AMN has first crack at filling Kaiser’s supplemental jobs. If they are unable to fill the jobs on their own, then they’ll release the job openings to their sub-vendors. As a result, jobs in the most desirable locations, like San Diego, tend to get filled by AMN because it’s easier to find candidates interested in such locations. Therefore, nurses working with AMN will have the inside track on Kaiser’s jobs.

In addition, AMN charges sub-vendors a service fee that effectively reduces the bill rate for sub-vendors. The fee is approximately 2% of the bill rate. However, this doesn’t mean that sub-vendors always pay less than AMN. In fact, many sub-vendors are able to pay quite a bit more than their larger competitor.

Unfortunately, many nurses do not like working with AMN. The company routinely receives poor reviews on all the major travel nurse agency rating services. And we regularly hear that AMN pays very poorly for the extra hours . Again, AMN uses many sub-vendors for the Kaiser account including some of the top rated staffing agencies, so it’s not absolutely necessary to work with AMN to land a job at Kaiser.

The travel nursing submission process with Kaiser

Upon agreeing to be submitted for a job with Kaiser, your submission profile will first be sent to the AMN Account Manager responsible for managing the specific Kaiser hospital in question. You will be contacted by the Account Manager or another representative, typically within 24-48 hours, who will ask a standard set of basic questions. They will typically ask if you have ever participated in a Code Blue and if you are proficient with IVs. They will also ask if you have all the licenses, certifications, and experience required for the position.

Kaiser Travel Nursing Interviews

If everything checks out, they will schedule a time for your clinical interview. You should attempt to schedule the interview at soon as possible. AMN works hard to fill the positions quickly. So they routinely schedule people for interviews as they are available. This means that someone could sneak in before you and land the job if you wait too long.

Computer Interview

Currently, interviews for Kaiser travel nursing jobs are conducted via the computer. The process is pretty basic. A time will be scheduled and the computer access information will be provided to the traveler.

The interview has two main parts. First, there will be a series of questions that deal with your specific unit. These questions may include medication calculations and other unit specific inquiries. For this series of questions, your answers will be entered into the computer.

The second part of the interview is a series of standard interview questions that will be voice recorded. The questions will address issues like:

  • What makes you a good employee?
  • How often do you miss work?
  • Describe a situation in which you used cultural diversity training to provide patient care.
  • Describe an instance in which you had to care for a difficult patient or deal with a difficult family member.

For some great advice on how to handle a computer interview, check out this great article on Highway Hypodermics.

Of course, the computer won’t be able to answer specific questions you have about the job. This means that questions about float policies, support staff, and shift-report will not be answered during this interview. If you receive a job offer, then you can always request to speak with a unit manager or have your recruiter get your questions answered.

Interview With Clinical Interviewer

In the past, the clinical interview was always with a qualified Registered Nurse who worked for AMN. In rare occurrences, you may still encounter a live interview a so it’s beneficial to know how they work.

In this case, a time would be scheduled for the interviewer to call you. It’s best to be available a half an hour before to a half an hour after the scheduled interview time just in case the interviewer calls early or late.

The clinical interviewers typically operate off of a standard interview template that can be modified a little to fit the needs of the particular unit in question. They routinely asked situational questions and medication calculation questions very similar to what is asked on the computer interview.

Unfortunately, the AMN interviewers do not work directly with the unit so they tend to know very little about the way the unit operates. Here again, you may have difficulty getting your travel nursing interview questions answered. Therefore, it’s important to communicate all questions and concerns to your recruiter. This includes questions about scheduling, time off, and other issues.  Your agency will contact the AMN Account Manager who will communicate with the hospital to get answers.

The AMN clinical interviewer will typically let you know immediately whether or not you passed the interview. If you did not pass, then you’ll need to wait 6 months before interviewing for another Kaiser assignment. If you pass, your profile will be forwarded along with the results of your interview to the Unit Manager. Additionally, passing an interview with Kaiser is good for 6 months. Therefore, you can be submitted to any other Kaiser jobs for the same unit during the 6 month period.

Regardless of the type of interview you receive, time-frames vary for the Unit Manager to get back to AMN and your agency as to whether or not you landed the job in question. I’ve had weeks go by without an answer and sometimes the job offer comes back within the hour. On rare occasions, you may receive a call from the unit manager who may ask some additional questions or tie off any loose ends.

Travel nurse onboarding with Kaiser

The onboarding process is a bit more tedious with Kaiser than it is with many hospitals. This is due in large part to the fact that they require their travelers to complete a set or four online training modules on Kaiser’s HealthConnect system prior to orientation. These modules can take up to 12 hours to complete but most nurses finish them in far less time.

Of course, you’ll also have to go through all of the standard testing and submit all the standard medical, license, and certification documentation. It’s important to note that Kaiser typically requires an AWHONN Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Certification for L&D nurses. And they typically require a “Telemetry Certification” for Tele, SDU, PCU, and ICU nurses. The telemetry certification can be completed as a CEU course on the same website where the HealthConnect training is completed.

While we’re on the subject, the HealthConnect modules and Telemetry Certification course will be found on RN.com. This is AMN’s CEU and training website. You will need to register for an account. If you don’t want AMN to contact you, then you should be sure to un-check the box that gives them permission to do so during the registration process.

If your contract is with a Kaiser in the Southern California Division, then you’ll need to schedule and attend an onboarding orientation prior to your contract start date. This onboarding orientation typically lasts 3 to 4 hours and there are multiple locations and times available for scheduling. It’s most common for nurses to schedule this onboarding orientation the Saturday before their contract starts.

The onboarding orientation is conducted by an AMN representative. They will answer basic questions about reporting for your assignment. You will be required to complete some standard paperwork and take some standard tests. This is also an opportunity for AMN to pitch you on their services. They may even offer to schedule PRN shifts for you should you choose to take them.

If your contract is with a Kaiser in the Northern California Division, then you’ll be able to complete all the onboarding orientation requirements online. Northern California used to require attendance so the online option is a new addition. They may revert to requiring attendance in the future, or perhaps the Southern California Kaisers will adopt the online method.

As mentioned previously, Kaiser requires nurses to complete a large number of steps prior to starting their assignments. The HealthConnect modules were added to the onboarding process when AMN took over the Kaiser contract from NurseFinders. There was no reimbursement offered to nurses and agencies were unable to bill for the time. Needless to say, there were tons of complaints. Recently, Kaiser began providing agencies with reimbursement for the onboarding process. Nurses will undoubtedly find that reimbursement amounts vary from agency to agency. However, the figure we here most is $200.

Pay expectations for travel nurses at Kaiser

Of course, pay is one of the main considerations when deciding whether or not to accept a job. Kaiser used to be the highest paying option for travel nurses in California. That’s because their contract with NurseFinders had the highest bill rates in the state. The bill rate for Specialty RNs was approximately $72 per hour in Northern California and $66 per hour in Southern California. The non-specialty bill rate was approximately $67 per hour in Northern California and $62 per hour in Southern California.

When the contract came to it’s scheduled end, there was a bidding war between some the industry’s top agencies and the bill rates were reduced significantly. In fact, they dropped by approximately 8% to 12%. As a result, the pay at Kaiser is now on the mid to lower end of the pay scale for California contracts. The fully blended pay rate for a standard assignment with Kaiser can be anywhere from $38 per our to $48 per hour, give-or-take, and depending on the specialty in question.

That said, Kaiser still has the potential to pay the best rates in California. That’s because their “Crisis Rates” are really high. Kaiser approves crisis rates when they have an urgent need or a need that is difficult to fill. The fully blended pay rate for a Kaiser crisis assignment can be anywhere from $55 per hour to $63 per hour, give-or-take, and depending on the specialty in question.

Kaiser also has the potential to pay among the lowest rates in California. That’s because their bill rates for 8 hour shifts are really low. As mentioned previously, many Kaisers operate on 8 hour shifts. Therefore, they sometimes have assignments with 8 hour shifts. The fully blended pay rate for an assignment with 8 hour shifts at Kaiser can be anywhere from $33 per hour to $41 per hour.

Travel nurse time reporting at Kaiser

Of course, a nurse’s hours must be reported to the agency in order for the nurse get paid. Typically, Kaisers require travelers to submit a weekly time sheet to the hospital’s staffing office. The staffing office obtains the appropriate signatures and submits the time sheet to the Vendor Management System, FieldGlass, that AMN uses to manage the account. That time sheet is then sent to your agency if you are going through someone other than AMN.

It’s always a good idea to maintain your own time sheet and submit it weekly to your agency. In fact, some agencies require this. Doing so helps ensure that you are paid properly. It gives the agency a record to compare with Kaiser’s report. They can also use this record to help ensure that hours are reported in a timely fashion.

Travel nursing disciplinary actions with Kaiser

Kaiser contracts are completed without a hitch in the vast majority of cases. However, there is always potential for disciplinary action. In such cases, it’s important for nurses to understand the potential impact. For example, disciplinary actions can be recognized by all of Kaiser California,  just one of the divisions, or just the hospital that levied disciplinary action. This is particularly important when a nurse is flagged as “Do Not Return” or “Do Not Use.”

Moreover, the nurse could potentially be marked as DNU by AMN. This is important even if you do not wish to ever work with AMN. Unfortunately, AMN is the Managed Service Provider for many hospitals and hospital organizations throughout the country. Therefore, if a nurse is DNU’d by AMN they could lose access to all the hospitals where AMN is the Managed Service Provider.

Again, these instances are rare. Be sure to communicate with your recruiter to determine the impact should you find yourself in such a situation.

As always, we’d love to here about your experience with this topic. Please post your questions and comments in the comments sections below!

They blacklisted me for reporting on of their clients for discrimination. The were the vendor. On that note, if they retaliate for reporting who wants to work for a company like this anyway.

It is illegal for them to do blacklist. Especially in the state they are in. People can report them or any agency that does this to the Labor Board. Just look up the law in the state you worked in or the state the agency is based.

They should put thr CEO on Undercover Boss because she probably does not know what her employees are doing.

FOR ICU TRAVEL NURSES: I’m currently at Kaiser and was hired as an ICU nurse but have only worked one shift in the ICU. All other shifts I have been floated to the floor and they will float you every 4 hrs if they need to. Multiple nurses (and the manager) in the ICU have told me to expect to float the majority of the time. With union laws travel nurses have to float before regular staff. Just be aware if you are wanting to work in the ICU. It’s not necessarily bad just not what I expected or wanted.

I had a bad experience with AMN. One of their reps wrongfully lied and said my doctor’s office never faxed my physicians statement. They faxed it 7 times. The rep continued to cover her end and not tell the truth. The same rep also cleared and reset something and all my tests vanished. She continually lied and said she didn’t. I then I formed AMN that I printed my 1st test in December of last year. She then informed the staffing rep I was wrong. This staff rep Jackie Townsend then accused me of being crazy. Jackie said I coudon’t print my certifications. I still have it. Later I had problems on their sites with learning modules. I informed them. They were no help as they blamed me for a lot. I then found the program format needed to have certain computers add another program. No one was aware of this. I then went to a friend’s and worked a week and a half on these learning modules and papers I needed to sign. Monday at 5 on the General manager of the Pleasanton office decided to not have me work with their office. Corporate management said they can’t do anything about this and it’s up to the branch it self. I couldn’t believe I worked on these modules and put so much time into this from December and January to be blacklisted cause their employee wrongfully cleared my account and tests as well as lied on all my physicians statements being faxed. My doctor’s office was upset that this rep was slandering them as well as acted with defamation of character. This company violates various medical regulations, wants to profit off our professions and treats us as though we are wrong and then not pay me for my time and work I put on these modules. NLBR violations, EEOC, FEAH and etc.

what ever you do stay away from AMN !!! Horrid people with conniving personal, I am suing them for damages and harassment.

As this article states, this is a horrible agency to work for, please listen to the article above and all the reviews from nurses. Let’s come together and make this fools go out of business. AMN needs to be reported to the person who makes the decision for awarding the contract of hiring supplemental staff. This company is full of nasty, unprofessional staff, people that will mark you DNU for any reason making it impossible for nurses to work with any other agency, moreover, they will report you to the Nursing Board and jeopardize you nursing license, this has been done to several nurses. Please, Please my fellow nurses do not use this agency and if anyone knows who to contact at Kaiser make them aware of what this people are doing with the nurses. If you do or say anything that they don’t like they will find ways to screw you. We all worked to hard to be nurses, don’t let this LOSERS take it away from you.

Thank you so much for this article. I understood more in 5 minutes reading your article than I did it with a sub-vendor. You rock!

Thanks, Mel! We’re glad to hear the information was helpful!!

Are the onboarding tests a pass/fail kind of thing, where the contract has the potential to be cancelled like with PBDS? Also I was told I need to show up for PSCO and onboarding, what does PSCO stand for? Thanks!

Typically, Kaiser hospitals will go through remediation when tests are failed. In other words, they’ll let you retake the test. However, I have heard of instances where contracts were cancelled for failing tests. It’s rare, but it happens. I’m not sure what PSCO stands for. It’s been a few years since I recruited, so I checked with a recruiter who places lots of nurses with Kaiser. They were not familiar with this acronym either. It may be referring to the online modules that Kaiser requires, but those aren’t something you need to “show up for”. They’re completed online. Or perhaps the acronym refers to the “pre-onboarding” that you must attend prior to thee contract start. This onboarding session is held with Kaiser’s Managed Service Provider, currently AMN Healthcare. We’d love to hear if you find out what PSCO actually means. I hope this helps though!

6 Best Ironing Boards of 2024

It's not just about the iron. Your board matters too.

best ironing boards

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab , we do a lot of ironing, especially when we test steam irons, prep for video shoots, assess wrinkle removal cycles on clothes washers and clothes dryers , de-wrinkle test fabrics for laundry detergent testing and even to spruce up our own GH lab coats.

Our top picks:

Size C Ironing Board

Best Overall Ironing Board

Brabantia size c ironing board.

Steel Top Long Ironing Board with Iron Rest

Best Value Ironing Board

Household essentials steel top long ironing board with iron rest.

Hanging Ironing Board

Best Over-the-Door Ironing Board

Honey-can-do hanging ironing board.

Adjustable Ironing Board, Size D

Best Ironing Board for Seated Ironing

Brabantia adjustable ironing board, size d.

Tabletop Ironing Board With Iron Rest

Best Tabletop Ironing Board

Household essentials tabletop ironing board with iron rest.

 Built-in Ironing Center

Best Wall-Mounted Ironing Board

Iron-a-way built-in ironing center.

When we test ironing boards, we rate them for weight, how smoothly they open and close and how easy they are to store. Our "iron tip-over test" is a way for us to check both the stability of the board and the durability of the iron. Finally, we evaluate the washability and quality of the pad and cover and the functionality of any accessories, like racks, cord holders and iron rests.

At the bottom of this guide, you can read more about how we test ironing boards in our Lab, what to look for when shopping for ironing boards and find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about ironing boards. For more laundry room essentials, check out our guides to the best laundry detergents , stain removers , washing machines and how to do laundry .

Brabantia's Size C board has everything we look for in a quality ironing board: stability, sturdy construction, an adjustable iron rest, a rack to hold your freshly ironed garments and an almost 10-inch adjustable height range. With child and transport locks, plus non-slip caps on the board's legs, you can be sure that the board will not collapse during use or open inadvertently in storage.

While we haven't Lab-tested this model yet, it is virtually identical to our Lab-favorite, Brabantia's Size B ironing board , though it is just over four pounds heavier. However, the Size C provides you with three extra inches of ironing surface, making it especially useful for ironing bed linens or tablecloths, or for sewers, quilters and crafters who need the extra width. For a pop of color, you can purchase the brand's ironing board cover in tons of fun patterns when you're ready for something fun and new.

All the basics at an affordable price plus lots of great user reviews convinced us that this Household Essentials ironing board should be our best value pick. While we haven't tested this board in our Lab, we like the V-shaped double leg construction and the iron rest with a rack to hang the items you've just ironed, something many basic boards don't include.

It's about four pounds lighter than our best overall board, but a few reviewers commented that it was a little more wobbly than they expected and the cover that came with it was a bit thin. At 14 inches wide, it's also slightly narrower than many others. Like more expensive boards though, it has a mesh steel top to permit heat and steam to pass through fabrics and with over 600 Amazon reviewers rating it a 4.4 out of five, many called it "sturdy." One said it's "just what I needed."

The space constraints that come with living in a small home, apartment or even a dorm room often mean that having a full size ironing board ready to use at a moment's notice is the stuff dreams are made of. But living in tight quarters doesn't mean you're relegated to wearing crumpled clothes. If you've got a door, you can still look smooth and professionally pressed with this model from Honey Can Do.

From a company whose organizing products we love, Honey Can Do knows a thing or two about saving space. Its door-mounted ironing board is a generous 14 inches wide and 44 inches long, providing a large ironing surface for a board this compact. We haven't tested this model in our Lab, but it has mostly excellent consumer reviews and is from a brand we know and trust, though some complained it didn't fit securely on their doors, leading to stability issues.

Ironing for hours can be a grueling task for anyone. But if standing for long periods of time is uncomfortable or painful for you or you are in a wheelchair, this Brabantia board can make this laundry task less painful and more possible to do. Infinitely adjustable, it can be set to any convenient height and the legs curve out, making it more comfortable to use while seated.

You won't find extras like a clothing shelf or iron rest here, but the end of the board features a heat-resistant parking zone, so you can place the iron soleplate down without any fear of damaging the cover. This Brabantia boasts one of the largest ironing surfaces we've seen. It is pricey, but we think worth it for the convenience. We love all the products we've tested from this brand and online reviewers agree, with over 9,100 giving it five stars on Amazon.

For those times when you just need to de-wrinkle a shirt collar or press a pants hem, a full-size ironing board may be overkill. It's much easier and faster to pull out and set up a tabletop model for small quick jobs, like this one from Household Essentials. Home Care and Cleaning Lab Executive Director, Carolyn Forté , especially likes this one since it sits higher off the table, meaning your clothes are less likely to wrinkle as they hang over the board.

Unlike others this size, it also has a retractable iron rest to keep your iron handy and off the table while working. When you’re done ironing, it comes with a hook so the board can be stored over a door. Though much smaller than a full-size board, it's perfect for touch-up ironing or if you're not a frequent ironer, could suffice as the only board you need!

Iron-A-Way's all-in-one ironing center was installed after a renovation to our Good Housekeeping Cleaning Lab years ago as a space saver and a way to keep our ironing board out of sight. Boy, was that a great decision! It kept our laundry test area looking neat and in order no matter when a tour group passed by. The cabinet — which is mounted onto or recessed into the wall — holds an ironing board that folds down and pivots. There's also a 60-minute timer, a light and an electrical outlet built into the cabinet so you can iron even without a wall outlet nearby. It has a shelf to store your iron and the door has a rod to hang clothes up after ironing. “It's so sleek, self-contained and invisible!” says Forté.

How we test the best ironing boards

line break

Our Cleaning Lab experts have logged hundreds of hours ironing fabric swatches for steam iron testing, cotton shirts for evaluating the wrinkle-preventing performance of clothes washers and dryers, and even the Good Housekeeping Institute Lab coats we wear, so we know a great ironing board when we see one.

In recent years, we've tested high-end and no-frills models as well as full size and tabletop designs. In fact, a new one just arrived as an entry in our 2023 Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning & Organizing Awards, so we'll be testing and reporting on it soon.

best ironing boards testing an iron rest on an ironing board

When we test ironing boards, we assess how easy they are to open, close and set up and adjust. We also evaluate how smoothly they operate, if they are stable or wobbly, how many pounds of force it takes to topple them and the weight and bulkiness of the board while carrying it. We look at how much ironing surface they provide, the amount of padding, and how well the cover handles steam and moisture. Helpful add-ons like iron rests, sleeve boards, cord holders and clothes shelves are also taken into account.

What to look for when shopping for the best ironing board

linebreak

Here are a few things to consider when shopping for the best ironing board.

✔️ Material : Steam irons get very hot, so you want to be sure that your ironing board is not made from a material that can be easily damaged by heat. Plastic iron rests are big no-no; instead, opt for ones with metal iron rests trimmed with heat-resistant silicone to withstand high temperatures. Same goes for the board itself: While the top cover is usually made of sturdy cotton, underneath this cover there should be a thick padding layer and then a final metal mesh frame underneath that.

✔️ Size : There are a several size considerations to take into account when shopping for an ironing board. You not only want to make sure that you have the space in your home to use and store an ironing board, but also that the ironing surface is big enough to iron clothing on comfortably. Most standard ironing boards have an ironing surface that is about 15 inches wide and at least 49 inches long and they adjust up and down to accommodate users of various heights. Ironing boards with retractable or removable iron rests, tabletop options and even ironing blankets are great options for homes with limited available space. Wall or door mounted ironing boards, like our picks from Iron-a-Way and Honey Can Do, are also great, out-of-the-way options that won't take up any precious floor or closet space.

✔️ Extra features : Some ironing boards have extra features that aren't absolutely necessary, but are nice to have, like a shelf underneath the board to hold your to-be-ironed or freshly ironed clothing, adjustable iron rests that can be adjusted for left- and right-handed users, extra stability locks on the board's legs and height adjusters. Wheels, cord holders and sleeve boards are also some add-ons you'll often see. The more customizable an ironing board is, the more likely it will be able to work for a wide variety of ironing needs and the more expensive it will likely be too.

Does a good ironing board make a difference?

It absolutely does! The weight of a steam iron along with the heat and steam that it produces is what irons out the wrinkles and creases from clothing. But try to press your clothing with the best steam iron on a soft, curved or poorly ventilated surface and you'll be disappointed with the results. Your steam iron needs the firm, flat support of an ironing board that allow heat and steam to flow through fabrics to really do its job. Plus the curved, narrow nose end of the board makes ironing shoulders, cuffs and other curved areas so much easier.

How often should you change your ironing board cover?

linebreak

How often you change your ironing board cover depends on how often you use your ironing board. A board that is used more often will require more frequent changes to the cover. According to Brabantia , an ironing board used once a week will need its cover changed about every three years. Some covers may be machine washable, but always check with your brand to be sure and do so only on a gentle cycle in warm or cold water. If no laundering instructions come with your cover, wash it by hand. Let it air dry (skip the dryer), and put it back on the board while it's still slightly damp so it's easier to tighten into position. Iron the cover to finish drying it and smooth out any remaining wrinkles. Always replace an ironing board cover if it's scorched, burned or torn.
