Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

Posted by Ahmed Abdulla | Duas

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

What does Safar mean?

Safar  (سفر) is an Arabic term which refers to travelling, going on a journey, or transportation. It is also the second Islamic month of the lunar calendar and the month where Muslims used to vacate their homes to gather food.

According to hadith and the sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) there are a number of duas one can recite for safar / travelling / going on a journey and we will cover them all in this one article.  Theses can be used for any method of transport whether by airplane, car, or boat.

Supplication For Travelling

Safar ki dua

In short, this hadith teaches to say the following:

  • (Bismillah) [three times]
  • Alhamdulillah
  • Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun (Also referenced in  Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14)
  • Alhamdulillah and Allahuakbar [three times]
  • Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant

The Full hadith is given below from Jami At-Tirmidhi, Vol. 6, Book of Supplications, Hadith 3446 Ali bin Rabi’ah said:

“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillah) [three times]. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-Hamdulillah) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-Hamdulillah)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allahu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he ﷺ laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ He said: ‘Indeed, your Lord if very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.”

Invocation For Traveler

Transliteration: Bismiallahi wa alhamdu liallahi. Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.

Translation: In the name of Allah, and Praise be to Allah. Glory be to the one who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord we will surely return.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Transliteration: Allhum rab alsamawat alsbʿ wama aẓlun wa-rab alarḍyn alsbʿ wama aqlun warab alshayaṭyn wama aḍlun warab alryaḥ wama duhryn finna nasalak khayr hudh alqarya wkhyr ahlha wanʿwdh baka mn shrha washr ahlha washr ma fyha.

Translation: “O Allah, You are the Lord of the seven skies and all the things that are under these skies and the seven planets and whatever is over these and of Satan who misled and all those misled by him and for the wind and all that it blows. Thus we seek the good of this town and the good of its members (people) and seek refuge from its evil and the evil of its members and from the evils of whatever is in it”. (Hisnul Hasin from Ibn Habban)

Another Dua:

A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa

Khaulah bint Hakim (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Whosoever alights somewhere and says: ‘A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),’ nothing will harm him until he leaves that place.” [Muslim] Riyad As Salihin. Arabic/English book reference : Book 8, Hadith 982

Other Hadiths About Safar and Safe Journey

The duas for safar covered this far are the most well known or common duas for journey. The rest of the article will focus on advice from Prophet Muhammad ( ﷺ ) regarding a safe travel and other Islamic traditions.

It’s Better To Travel With Others:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.”. In another narration, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.” 1

This was more applicable and good advice back during the Prophet’s time as travelling was far more treacherous at night especially if going alone. Today travelling at night is safer but you will not be as alert as you would when you first wake. Going on safar with group you’ll be less likely to make mistakes or be taken advantage of.

When Ascending To Heights (Going on Plane)

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) and his army ascended a height, they would proclaim: “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest),” and when they climbed down, they would proclaim: “Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection).” 2

Shortened Prayer While Vacationing:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we traveled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer. 3

Allah kee mahima ho, jisane hamen is savaaree ka adhikaaree banaaya, aur usakee shakti ke bina ham ise praapt nahin kar paate, aur nissandeh hamen apane Allah kee or mudana chaahie.

Hadith About Safar ki Dua

Ali bin Rabi’ah said:

I witnessed Ali ( Allah be pleased with him) having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the strip, he said: بسم اللہ  ( Bismillah) In the name of Allah, three times. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: الحمد لله (Al-humdulillah) All praises due to Allah.

Then he said: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ (Subhan alladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun) Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we are not able to do it. And, surely, to our lord are we returning.

Then he said: الحمد لله ( Al- hamdulillah) All praise is due to Allah- three times- and الله اكبر  (Allahu Akbar) Allah is the greatest – three times- سبحانك اني قد ظلمت نفسي فاغفر لي فانا لا يغفر الذنوب الا انت (Subhanaka inni qad zalamtu nafsi faghfirli fa- innahu la yaghfirudh- dhunuba illa ant) Glory is to You. Indeed, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed, none forgives sins except you.

Then he laughed. So I said: O Commander of the believer! What caused you to laugh? He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he (SAW) laughed, so I said, What caused you to laugh? He(SAW) said: Indeed your lord is very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than you forgives sins.”

(Book Sunan Tirmizi,   Sahih Hadith #3446 )

We came to know from this hadith that we should;

  • Say بسم اللہ Bismillah -three times while we are sitting on our ride.
  • Say الحمد لله Alhumdulillah when we sit.
  • Then say safar ki dua (Subhan alladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun)
Alhumdullialah- three times.
Allahu akbar- three times.
(Subhanaka inni qad zalamtu nafsi faghfirli fa- innahu la yaghfirudh- dhunuba illa ant) one time.

When on a plane, you should say  الله اكبر ( Allahu-akbar) when the plane is rising upward. When the plane is landing, say سبحان الله (Subhan- Allah) praise to be Allah. If the plane or ride stumbles, start saying Bismillah. Allah will protect you from any harm.

Safar Ki Dua – Dua for Travelling –

Safar Ki Dua : Traveling is scary for many of us. Suddenly as the car accident or airplane skids off the runway, you’re worried about CRASHING! (Although you are more likely to get into a car accident than your plane crashing from what I hear) Yet, that thought of your plane falling in the middle of the ocean and being eaten by sea creatures crosses your mind as much as you try to bury it. And, the turbulence… well, that makes the thoughts even stronger… forcing you to mumble incessantly for Allah to land your plane safely. WHEW! You’ve landed! But, you’re still anxious because you still have no idea if your luggage made it safely. WHEW, again! They are unscathed. Oh, no! You’re still not home. Oh, the anxiety!

There is no Dua.

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is neither might nor power except with Allah.

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from leading others astray, causing others to slip or being caused to slip by others, doing wrong or being wronged by others, or behaving foolishly or being treated foolishly by others.

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee bini'matihi tatimmus-saalihaat.

Alhamdu lillaahi 'alaa kulli haal.

Praise is to Allah in all circumstances.

Bismillaahi.

With the Name of Allah.

Laa 'ilaaha 'illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa Huwa hayyun laa yamootu, biyadihil-khayru, wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shay'in Qadeer.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He brings life and He causes death, and He is living and does not die. In His Hand is all good, and He is Able to do all things.

Rabbighfir lee wa tub 'alayya 'innaka 'Antat-Tawwaabul-Ghafoor.

My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance, You are the Ever-Relenting, the All-Forgiving.

Bismillaahi wassalaatu wassalaamu 'alaa Rasoolillaahi, Allaahumma 'innee 'as'aluka min fadhlika, Allaahumma'simnee minash-Shaytaanir-rajeem.

In the Name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask for Your favor, O Allah, protect me from Satan the outcast.

'A'oothu billaahil-'Adheem, wa bi-Wajhihil-Kareem, wa Sultaanihil-qadeem, minash-Shaytaanir-rajeem. [Bismillaahi, wassalaatu.] [Wassalaamu 'alaaRasoolillaahi.] Allaahum-maftah lee 'abwaaba rahmatika.

I seek refuge in Almighty Allah, by His Noble Face, by His primordial power, from Satan the outcast.1 [In the Name of Allah, and blessings.]2 [And peace be upon the Messenger of Allah.]3 O Allah, open before me the doors of Your mercy.4

Allaahummaj'al fee qalbee nooran, wa fee lisaaanee nooran, wa fee sam'ee nooran, wa fee basaree nooran, wa min fawqee nooran, wa min tahtee nooran, wa 'an yameenee nooran, wa 'an shimaalee nooran, wa min 'amaamee nooran, wa min khalfee nooran, waj'alfee nafsee nooran, wa 'a'dhim lee nooran, wa 'adhdhim lee nooran, wafal lee nooran, waj'alnee nooran, Allaahumma 'a'tinee nooran, waj'al fee 'asabee nooran, wafee lahmee nooran, wafee damee nooran, wa fee sha'ree nooran, wa fee basharee nooran. [Allaahummaj'al lee nooran fee qabree wa nooran fee 'idhaamee.] [Wa zidnee nooran, wa zidnee nooran, wa zidnee nooran.][Wa hab lee nooran 'alaa noor.]

O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.1 [O Allah, make for me a light in my grave... and a light in my bones.](At-Tirmithi 5/483 (Hadith no. 3419).) [Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light .](Al-Bukhari in Al-'Adab Al-Mufrad (Hadith no. 695), p. 258. See also Al-Albani, Sahih Al-'Adab Al-Mufrad(no. 536).) [Grant me light upon light.] (Al-Bukhari, cf. Al-Asqalani, Fathul-Bari 11/118.)

Ghufraanaka. I seek Your forgiveness.

[Bismillaahi] Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika minal-khubthi walkhabaa'ith. (Before entering) [In the Name of Allah] . (Then) O Allah , I seek protection in You from the male and female unclean spirits.

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee kasaanee haathaa (aththawba) wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlim-minnee wa laa quwwatin. Praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I was powerless myself and incapable

In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.

O Allah! Behold I ask You the good through Your Knowledge, and ability through Your Power, and beg (Your favor) out of Your infinite Bounty. For surely You have Power; I have none. You know all; I know not. You are the Great Knower of all things.  O Allah! If in Your Knowledge this matter be good for my faith (Deen), for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me therein. But if in Your Knowledge, this matter be bad for my faith (Deen), for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then turn it away from me, and turn me away there from, and ordain for me the good wherever it be, and cause me to be pleased therewith.

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee 'ahyaanaa ba'da maa 'amaatanaa wa'ilayhin-nushoor. Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return.

O Allah, bless for them, that which You have provided them, forgive them and have mercy upon them.

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee 'aafaanee mimmab-talaaka bihi wa fadhdhalanee 'alaa katheerin mimman khalaqa tafdheela.

Praise is to Allah Who has spared me what He has afflicted you with, and preferred me greatly above much of what He has created.

Allaahumma 'at'im man 'at'amanee wasqi man saqaanee.

O Allah , feed the one who has fed me and drink to the one who has given me drink.

Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, How perfect He is, The One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for birr and taqwaa in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are The Companion on the journey and The Successor over the family, O Allah, I take refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of hearts and being in a bad predicament, and I take refuge in You from an ill fated outcome with wealth and family.

…upon returning the same supplication is recited with the following addition:

We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord.

'Astawdi'ukumul-laahal-lathee laa tadhee'u wadaa'i'uhu.

I leave you in the care of Allah , as nothing is lost that is in His care.

Importance of Reciting Dua Before Traveling with Ahadees

There are several reasons why reciting Dua for traveling (Safar ki dua) is important in Islam, and these reasons are underscored by the sayings and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) known as Ahadith. Here’s a breakdown of the significance:

Seeking Allah’s Protection and Guidance :

Travel can be unpredictable, and acknowledging this vulnerability is a core part of Islamic belief. By reciting dua, Muslims entrust their journey to Allah (SWT), seeking His protection from unforeseen difficulties and His guidance in making wise decisions throughout the trip.

Following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ):

Numerous Ahadith emphasize the importance of dua before travel. Here’s a powerful example:

“Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘When anyone of you intends to set out on a journey, he should pray two Rak’ahs (units of prayer) before setting out.’” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

This Hadith highlights the act of performing a voluntary prayer before travel as a recommended practice (Sunnah) established by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Increased Blessings and Reward:

Several Ahadith suggest that reciting specific travel duas can bring blessings and rewards. For instance:

“Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘Whoever says (when leaving his house): ‘In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah,’ (Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallahi, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah) it will be said to him: ‘You have been taken care of ( کفِيتَ ), and you have been protected ( وَقِيتَ ),’ and the Satan will depart from him.” (Jami At-Tirmidhi)

This Hadith indicates that reciting a particular dua can lead to divine protection and ward off evil.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) hadith on Travelling

Sakhr bin Wada’ah Al-Ghamidi (May Allah be pleased with him) conveyed that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) supplicated, “O Allah, bestow Your blessings upon my people in the early part of the day.” Whenever the Prophet dispatched a detachment or an army unit, he would do so early in the day, shortly after dawn. Sakhr, who was a merchant, also followed this practice by sending off his merchandise at the beginning of the day. As a result, his trade prospered, and he attained a substantial fortune.   Riyad as-Salihin 957
Ka’b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) commenced the Tabuk expedition on a Thursday, displaying a preference for initiating journeys on that day. Riyad as-Salihin 956

What is the dua for safar English?

When embarking on a journey or Safar in Islam, it is recommended to recite a Dua for safar to seek safety and protection. The Dua for safar is:

This translates to : “In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power or strength except with Allah.”

You will come to realize, during your journey, the instances when the Almighty shielded you from potential harm. Allah may reveal to you the dangers He safeguarded you from, or He might manifest the tranquility of your journey, affirming that it was He who attentively listened to the dua for safar made before your departure.

It’s a way of seeking Allah’s blessing and safeguarding from potential evil or difficulties that may arise during the journey. By saying this duas sincerely and with tawakkul in Allah, you seek His mercy and grace to ensure a safe and secure travel experience.

Which Surah to recite before Travelling?

Before leaving on a journey in Islam, it is recommended to recite certain Surahs and Verses from the Quran for protection and blessings of the Almighty. Here are three Surahs that I recommend from my experience to recite before traveling:

How to recite dua in English?

To prepare for du’a, follow these simple and beautiful steps:

Perform Wudu (Ablution) : While not obligatory, performing wudu purifies oneself and sets the right mindset for connecting with Allah. The Prophet (saw) would sometimes make du’a after performing wudu.

Face the Qiblah : Though not compulsory, facing the Qiblah during du’a is a practice observed by the Prophet (saw) on certain occasions, enhancing the spiritual connection.

Raise Your Hands : Raising hands during du’a is a Sunnah with a profound meaning. The Prophet (saw) stated that Allah, being Generous, is shy to turn away His servant’s raised hands empty.

Call Upon Allah in a Low Voice : When making private du’a, the Prophet (saw) advised a low voice, emphasizing that Allah, the All-Hearing, is always near. This is in line with the Quranic guidance to remember Allah with humility and fear.

How do you say someone has a safe journey in Islam ?

In my family or in my relatives, when someone is about to start a journey, we do heartfelt customs to seek Allah’s protection and blessings. Like saying “ Fi Amanillah ” or “ Fi Man Allah ” to the traveler, meaning “ In Allah’s Protection .”

Additionally, giving “Sadqa” (charitable donations) in the name of Ahlul-Bayt (prophet Muhammad’s household ) before a journey is seen as a virtuous act.

We believe this act of charity can bring blessings and protection. By contributing to the well-being of others through charitable deeds, Allah’s mercy and protection extend to both the giver and the traveler.

What is Qasr Salah in Islam?

Qasr Salah in Islam refers to the shortened or abbreviated form of the ritual prayer, or Salah, performed by us Muslims during our travels. When a person embarks on a journey, covering a certain distance as defined by Islamic jurisprudence, we are allowed to perform Qasr Salah, which is a concession from the regular, full-length prayers.

During travel, a Muslim is permitted to shorten the four-unit (Rak’ah) prayers—Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha—to two units. This means that instead of the usual four rakah, a traveler will perform only two rakah for these prayers. Fajr prayer, which consists of two rakah, remains unchanged during travel, and Maghrib, with its three rakah, is also performed in full.

The distance that qualifies for Qasr Salah is generally understood to be around 48 miles (77.25 kilometers) and in Shia Islam it is (45 kilometers) from one’s hometown or city. However, it’s important to note that opinions may vary among scholars on the specific distance.

Which dua is for safety?

In Islam, when seeking safety and protection, one powerful supplication (dua) is to recite Ayatul Kursi. Ayatul Kursi is a verse from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255) in the Quran. It is a well-known and highly regarded verse for seeking Allah’s protection. Reciting this verse is believed to bring about divine safeguarding and ward off harm.

Ayatul Kursi is a potent supplication highly recommended in Islam. In my understanding and personal experience, it has proven effective in every situation. This verse is often turned to for its strength and protection, and many people, including myself, find comfort and positive outcomes through its recitation.

What Quran Says about travelling?

In the Quran, the holy book of Islam, there are verses that talk about traveling. The Quran recognizes traveling as a way to gain knowledge, discover the signs of God, and think about the variety of creation. Let’s take a look at a few of these

Permission to Travel:

“And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you. Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy.” Surah An-Nisa (101)

Trusting in Allah during Travel:

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us, and have mercy upon us.” Surah Al-Baqarah (286)

Reflecting on God’s Creation:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], ‘Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'” Surah Al-Imran (190-191)
“O you who have believed, when it is said to you, ‘Make room [in assemblies], ‘ then make room; Allah will make space for you. And when it is said, ‘Arise, ‘ then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” Surah Al-Mujadila (11)

When leaving your home, even for a short period, remember to seek Allah’s protection from harm. Dear brothers and sisters, unforeseen challenges can impact us at any time.

My prayers extend to each one of you. May Allah grant you rewards in every aspect, including good health and wealth, both in this life and the hereafter, the Barzakh.

Can We Read Safar Ki Dua For Traveling In Car or Plane?

Yes. Chahy ap jahaz main safar karain, lift main bethay, gaari, car, ya bike chalae, har tarha ki sawari par bethtay huay ye duai parhna chahye.

Kyu ke sawari hamaray ikhtiyaar aur qabu se nikalnay main aik lamha bhi nahi lagta. Is liye zaruri hai kay Allah Taala se khair maang kar, toba karke aur uski madad ke sath har safar ko shuru kia jae.

Isi liye boht se ulama to yeh bhi kehtay hain ke ghair zaruri safar se parhaiz karna chahye aur safar se pehle Istikhara karna chahye takay khair o barakat hasil ho. Iske alawa safar se pehle hifazat ke liye Dua e Anas ka bhi ehtimam karna chahye

Second Du’a for Travelling

Abdullah ibn Sarjis I reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on journey he would say:

Allāhumma anta s-sāhibu fi s-safar, wa l-khalīfatu fi l-ahl. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthā’i s-safar, wa ka’ābati-l-munqalab, wa mina l-hawri baʿda l-kawn, wa min daʿwati l-mazlūma, wa min sū’i l-manẓari fi l-ahli wa l-māl.

Third Du’a for Travelling

Husayn ibn Ali I reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed the recitation of the following Quranic verse when boarding transport:

Bismi Llāhi majrāhā wa mursāhā, inna rabbī la-ghafūrur-raḥīm.

When Ascending or Descending

There are two supplications that can be recited when ascending or descending.

Ibn Umar I reported that when the Prophet ﷺ returned from Hajj, Umrah or a military expedition, whenever he climbed a hill or hillock he said takbīr thrice, followed by:

Lā ilāha illa Llāhu wahdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulk, wa lahu l-ḥamd, wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr. Ā’ibūnā tā’ibūna, ʿābidūna sājidūna li-rabbinā ḥāmidūn. Ṣadaqa Llāhu waʿdah, wa naṣara ʿabdah, wa hazama l-aḥzāba waḥdah.

Anas I narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ ascended to a high place in the land he would say:

Allāhumma laka sh-sharafu ʿalā kulli sharafin, wa laka l-ḥamdu ʿalā kulli ḥāl.

Disembarking from Transport

After you have disembarked from your means of transport, recite this du’a:

Rabbi anzilnī munzalān mubārakān wa anta khayru l-munzilīn.

Approaching a Town

Upon approaching a town or city during your journey, recite the following du’a. Suhayb I related that the Prophet ﷺ did not see any village he was about to enter without saying:

Aisha J said that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked upon a region he was about to enter he would say:

Allāhumma innī as’aluka min khayri hādhihi wa khayri mā jamiʿta fīhā, wa aʿūdhu bikā min sharrihā wa sharri mā jamiʿtu fīhā. Allāhumma-rzuqnā ḥayāhā, wa aʿidhnā min wabāhā, wa ḥabbibnā ilā ahlihā, wa ḥabbib ṣāliḥī ahlihā ilaynā.

Stopping for the Night

If you stop at night during your journey, recite the following du’a. Khawlah bint Hakim J reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever dismounts at a place and says the following, nothing will harm him until he sets off again from that place.’

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti Llāhi t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

Umar ibn al-Khattab I reported that when the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was travelling, as night was approaching he would say:

Yā arḍu rabbī wa Rabbuki Llāh. A‘ūdhu bi Llāhi min sharriki wa sharri mā fīk, wa sharri mā khuliqa fīk, wa sharri mā yadubba ʿalayk. Aʿūdhu bi Llāhi min asadin wa aswad, wa min al-ḥayyati wa l-ʿaqrab, wa min sākini l-balad, wa min wālidin wa mā walad.

Ȧ’ibūna tā’ibūna ‘ābidūn, li-rabbinā ḥamidūn.

Anas I narrated: “We returned with the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Talhah and I, and Safiyyah was riding behind him on his she-camel. When we were close to Madinah he said: ‘Returning, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord.’ He continued to say that until we reached Madinah.”

Ibn Abbas I related that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from a journey and went to his family, he would say:

Tawban tawbā, li-rabbinā awbā, lā yughādiru ḥawbā.
