Tips for Buying Ride-on Suitcases

Read age and size requirements carefully.

Pay close attention to the age, size, and weight requirements of each ride-on suitcase. You’ll want to make sure your child is old enough, tall enough, and small (or big) enough so they can travel and use one safely. It’s also important to consider how long your family can use this piece if making more of an investment.

Consider packing needs

Check how durable any clasps, straps, harnesses, and pull bars are as well. You’ll also want to make sure there’s a handle for your child to hold onto while they’re riding.

You’ll want kids to be old enough so that their legs touch the ground while scooting, as this will help keep them stable and safe. You also want them to be old enough to follow directions so they don’t ride off in a different direction. Most options are geared toward kids 2 and older.

To mitigate risk with a ride-on suitcase, it’ll come down to the way you and your child are using the suitcase. “It’s important to remember that the risks of riding them are similar to riding a tricycle or a regular scooter,” Dr. Mona explains. “If a child gets moving too fast and falls, they can hurt a limb or bump their head on the ground.”

If there’s a 3-point harness, that’s the best way to go, because as long as you’re paying attention, your child should remain strapped in and safe. “You’ll want to make sure the harness fits snugly, and the shoulder straps should attach at or just above their shoulders,” Dr. Mona says. “Using these items should involve thinking of risk and benefit, and assuring the child is monitored and securely strapped in for optimal safety.”

It’s never a bad idea to prioritize safety, even with your suitcase. “It’s also worth considering having your little one wear a helmet if they ride a scooter suitcase or ride-on suitcase,” Dr. Mona advises. “It may feel unnecessary but with the excitement of travel and the bustle of a busy, new environment, kids may be distracted and be more prone to injury.”

For expecting parents, travel can seem like one of those parts of life that’s off the table after having a baby. The ability to be spontaneous, to just pack a carry-on bag and head to some far-off destination for a few days, to run around exploring new cities, restaurants, beaches — all of it seems impossible. It doesn’t help that many parents and grandparents who have been there before will warn you to travel now, “while you still can!”

But as the parent of a now-16-month-old, I can say from experience that this is categorically false. I’ve now taken my daughter on many trips, including flights to the Midwest and Canada, and road trips to upstate New York and Washington, DC. The first trips we took were nerve-wracking: Did we pack all the right things for her? Would she sleep okay in the new place, thus allowing us, her parents, to sleep okay? Did we remember every possible item we might need to have at arm’s reach in the event of catastrophe while in transit?

With each successive trip, though, we got more and more confident. Each time, we learned a little bit more about how to optimize our travel routine. We learned what items we needed and what we would be fine without. We learned that you should definitely pack a lot of wet wipes, and that navigating the airport is a lot easier with a lightweight travel stroller than with your big everyday stroller.

You can absolutely travel with a baby, as long as you accept that it will look a little bit different from the way you traveled before. And one of the ways it looks different — besides having to juggle your vacation plans around the baby’s nap schedule — is that you need a lot of gear.

Specifically, there are a number of things that can make traveling with a baby or toddler much, much easier. There is a wide world of products out there, some of which are for making plane travel smoother, while others make vacation at your eventual destination more enjoyable. Wading through the options can be overwhelming, and it’s hard to know which products are worth the money and/or packing space.

The recommendations we’ve put together — by talking to travel experts, parenting specialists, and seasoned moms and dads on the Vox staff — are not meant to be one-size-fits-all. Pick and choose what feels most useful and valuable to you based on your travel style and budget. You might, for instance, be totally fine skipping a travel high chair if you don’t mind having your baby sit on your lap for meals. You might feel your regular stroller works well enough for vacation and you don’t need a travel stroller.

And remember: You don’t always have to spend money to get these products. A secret of modern parenting is there is a whole economy of parents swapping baby and kid stuff they’re done with. Ask friends and family who have kids older than yours if they have what you need, or source from a neighborhood parent group or local Buy Nothing group . If you’re able to get (or borrow!) something for free, that can be more valuable than having the “best” brand .

Things to pack that are genuinely useful

Travel stroller.

That perfect stroller that you spent months researching and selecting before the baby was born? It may not be very well-suited to traveling, particularly if it’s a big, heavy model. When traveling, you want something that’s lightweight and compact, since you’ll need to fold up the stroller when going through TSA checkpoints and when gate-checking it.

All of this means traveling will be easier if you get a second stroller specifically designed for travel. There are two kinds: travel strollers , which generally fold up into thirds in a little compact rectangle, and umbrella strollers , which tend to be cheaper than travel strollers and fold up more like a long stick or umbrella shape.

I have the Summer Infant 3DLite stroller, which is a relatively inexpensive, light umbrella stroller. This thing has gotten us through trips big and small.

For a travel stroller, Vox audio producer Victoria Chamberlin recommends the GB Pockit+ All-Terrain stroller: “We took this to Germany, Scotland, and Italy. It folds to half the size of a rolly suitcase and can go under most seats and in all overhead compartments,” Chamberlin said. “Highly recommend if you have an international flight connection because if you gate check a stroller, you will not get it back until your final destination. When we got stranded in London overnight, I was very happy I had this in my hot hands.”

And Corinne McDermott, author of the travel website Have Baby Will Travel , recommends just bringing your regular stroller on trips, provided it can play double duty. “It’s not necessary to purchase a second stroller specifically for travel if your main one works well,” McDermott says. “A stroller is not just a stroller when it comes to travel with babies and little kids. It is a bed, a high chair, a buggy for all of your stuff, and a baby jail for when you need to know your baby is in a secure spot while your hands are full and attention is elsewhere. Our beloved stroller was the UPPAbaby Vista, which was our everyday stroller that worked great for travel. It is easy to maneuver, the basket holds a lot, it’s high enough to push up to a table for mealtimes, and the deep recline was great for naps.”

Travel car seat

One of the most annoying things about traveling with a baby is that you need to lug your car seat around everywhere if you plan to take a taxi or ride in any car at all. You could try bringing your regular car seat if it’s small, like an infant car seat — but otherwise, most parents I know recommend leaving the heavy convertible car seat in your car and getting a much lighter travel version.

Vox video managing producer Val Lapinski recommends the Cosco Scenera Next, a travel car seat that weighs just 10 pounds. Says Val: “It’s ubiquitous for a reason — it weighs nothing.”

After having a miserable time dragging our bulky convertible car seat through Newark Airport and around our destination of Toronto, my husband and I bought the Cosco car seat upon Val’s recommendation to use for our future travels. Just a month later, we took it on a trip to Chicago and immediately knew it had been worth it. It was much lighter and easier to carry around; my husband’s shoulders were grateful.

Travel bags for both the car seat and stroller

If you’re flying, most airlines allow you to gate-check a stroller and a car seat for free. But items can be damaged during the gate-check process, so it’s a good idea to invest in travel bags to protect them from scratches and other wear and tear. I have these simple red bags from J.L. Childress.

A lightweight baby carrier

If your baby is still small enough for babywearing , bring a carrier — it’s nice for carrying the baby around the airport once you check or gate-check your stroller, and it’ll be helpful when you want to do short outings where a stroller might feel cumbersome, like going to a restaurant.

Emily Oster, an economist and author of the parenting books Expecting Better , Cribsheet , and The Family Firm , recommends the BityBean carrier: “It’s a very lightweight baby carrier that goes front or back and can range from a very small baby up through a 2-year-old. I spent many an hour in the back of an airplane flight bouncing a kid in this thing. Generally, in my view, the less gear the better, so this was a big win when we discovered it.”

Unless you’re staying somewhere that offers a crib, you will need a travel crib that folds up compactly and is easy to carry around to provide a safe sleep space for your baby.

The Graco Pack ’n Play is beloved by many parents (including myself). It’s easy to assemble, fold up, carry, and store, and comes with a bassinet attachment for younger babies.

Chamberlin recommends the Guava Lotus travel crib: “This is way lighter and easier to put together than a pack and play, and takes up less space as a backpack than similar models. Also, it has a bassinet insert you can get if your baby is that little.”

Travel high chair

You most likely already have a high chair at home, but when traveling, you might want one that’s easy to collapse and carry.

Says Chamberlin: “This is our go-to travel high chair. It is good for the floor, and also attaches to a dining chair. And if you take the tray off, it’s a camp chair. We have used it for travel to visit family, camping, and hotels.”

Baby headphones, if you’re into screen time

Screen time can be a godsend on vacation when you want to have a nice dinner at a restaurant and need your toddler to sit still and be quiet for a little while. Bring your iPad with preloaded shows, but don’t forget baby headphones so the rest of the restaurant’s patrons don’t have to listen to Ms. Rachel. I use these.

Portable white noise machine

One of the most important keys to a successful vacation with your baby is sleep. Maintaining a baby’s sleep schedule and making sure they get adequate naps and good sleep at night, even in a new setting, is crucial. If you use a white noise machine at home as many parents do, then you likely want a small portable one to pack on vacation. I use this one, which is chargeable and has a little hook that makes it easy to strap onto your stroller or car seat for naps on the go, too.

Portable blackout curtains

Many kids need total darkness to be able to sleep, and the varying light situation in hotels and Airbnbs can wreak havoc on daytime naps. Many Vox parents recommend portable blackout curtains to create that perfect darkness — everyone will be happier if the baby has had a solid nap.

Catherine Spangler, a supervising producer on Vox’s video team, says: “These blackout curtains with suction cups have been lifesavers across three continents for us.” The suction cups make them easy to attach to any window, and they’re lightweight and easy to fold up and throw into your carry-on bag.

Your everyday bag might work, but Jessica Darrington, who runs the baby travel website and Instagram Where Is Briggs, also recommends the ultra-structured travel diaper bag from No Reception Club. Says Darrington: “This diaper bag has been a game changer when traveling with a baby because it has kept all of our gear organized. As far as I can tell, this is basically a tent for babies to sleep in , but the entire $180 tent is made of blackout shades. Some parents I know love it, but we’ve never invested in one — portable blackout shades have worked just fine for us and are much cheaper.

Travel baby monitors are things that exist, but there are also a million baby monitor apps that turn devices like iPads, with cameras and microphones, into monitors that stream to your phone. Save your money and skip buying a travel-specific device.

If you’re a traveling parent I’m sure you are probably sick of dragging your toddler by the hand on all those long and boring airport walks . This simple task can be tedious for adults but try being a 4-year-old to whom those long corridors can seem like an endless expedition to nowhere.

I know the struggle all too well but thankfully I found getting a ride-on suitcase for my son was the best solution. Being able to give my kids a rest without having to stop has been a massive godsend for me by making traveling with kids way less chaotic.

I’s much more than simply having an option for the kids to sit down. Because I can pull him along at the same time, ride on suitcases handling the family’s luggage , keeping an eye on your toddler, and pushing his baby brother in the stroller simultaneously look easy! They are a great choice for kids’ travel luggage and make transit that little bit easier for everyone.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Ride-On Suitcase

1. Why should your child take care of their own suitcase?

It’s never too early to start teaching kids life skills and being responsible for their own luggage is a transferable skill that kids will use forever. Making the suitcase fun and convenient just means that your toddler is more likely to enjoy taking on that little bit of responsibility.

As a parent, it’s also super beneficial to have one less thing to carry when your hands are already full!

2. What Age Should My Child Be to Use a Ride-On Suitcase?

Now that you’ve started looking for ride-on suitcases you will quickly see that there are SO many options to choose from.

The most popular one ( Trunki ) is made for kids around 3 years old with a maximum weight of 50kg . This makes many people think that these are only suitable kid’s travel luggage for older children. But in actuality, the age range is a little bit less restrictive since there are so many choices.

Your child’s abilities are a better gauge of whether or not they are ready for a ride on a suitcase rather than their age. Early learners may be capable of balancing confidently at just 2 years old whereas others may need a few more years to reach the same point.

3. Which Style of Kids’ Luggage Would Suit You?

Yes! There are many different choices when it comes to the types of kid’s luggage available today. From basic backpacks and small suitcases to the more advanced ride-on suitcases and scooters that we are talking about today.

Within the ride-on suitcase category, there are even a few different styles which I will explain below.

Ride-On Suitcase – These suitcases with wheels are strong enough for toddlers and other young children to sit on and be pulled along by a strap or push themselves with their feet. The clasp is also kid-friendly, making it easy for them to open and access their belongings without needing to bug Mom.
Scooter Luggage – Made with older children in mind, Scooter luggage is essentially a suitcase attached to the pole under the handlebars of a regular scooter. Kids can scoot around like normal and it can be folded up for boarding.
Over the Suitcase Seat – Perfect for early walkers and toddlers, these are fold-out seats that are designed to fit over adult-size suitcases. Some suitcases also come with a seat already built in.

4. Can you take a ride-on suitcase as a carry-on?

All of the ride-on suitcases I mention can be taken as carry-on, but for others, it can depend on the type and size of the suitcase. Check that the size is small enough for the airline. It’s usually 20″.

5. Are children allocated their own carry-on luggage?

Yes, as long as they have a ticket/seat of their own children are also allocated carry-on luggage the same as any other ticketed passenger . This means you can bring your own allowance plus your child’s ride-on suitcase.

For an infant in arms, you can usually bring a smaller checked suitcase and a diaper bag on board, but budget airlines have more restrictions.

As I mentioned before, Trunki is the most popular ride-on suitcase out there as it was the first one. It’s super cute and super functional so I can see why!

It’s a great size for little hands to be able to help with the packing , opening, and pulling, plus it’s made to ride, sit, carry, and climb all over.

What’s more, the bright exterior is super hard to lose in the airport and its fun patterns make it a favorite accessory for the kids, getting them excited about travel.

The suitcase itself is great with a good amount of storage and the design was adorable, but the wheels don’t turn 360 degrees and we found the strap was too long. This meant that when I was pulling my son along we would almost trip people over because he was drifting! On the bright side though it’s pretty indestructible.

This one not only holds all your toddler’s belongings and can be ridden through the airport but also turns into a bed to use on the plane !

Even though it’s a decent size, it’s also lightweight enough to be pulled easily. The hard outer shell means it can take a bump or two and can be personalized with stickers. With countless good reviews all over the internet, most parents seem to agree this is a great ride-on suitcase!

I both love and hate this ride-on suitcase. The 360-degree turning front wheels have solved all the problems I had before, making a smooth ride with easy turning. But, a lot of the internal space is taken up by the mat which is used to turn it into an airplane bed which means it doesn’t have as much storage as the Trunki.

Duffel Profiled Ride-On Suitcase

If your toddler can sit up well unassisted and you’re looking for something that can be used for a little longer (up to around age 6), the Duffel Profiled Ride-On Suitcase is a good choice.

This one is a little different from the others as you roll it like a normal suitcase rather than pulling it behind you which really eliminates the risk of drifting entirely and allows you to have your toddler within arm’s reach at all times.

Helping kids get rid of some energy whilst at the airport is a big win in my books and this Scooter suitcase is a great option for that.

The luggage case itself is durable and the perfect size to balance capacity and size , fitting perfectly in the overhead locker of most planes.

But riding in style is really the best part of this ride on a suitcase, the smooth wheels even light up with LED lights and the telescopic handle means it can grow with your child.

Keep in mind that a scooter suitcase is mostly for older kids. My son is 4 years old and still not a proficient scooter user so this suitcase was a bit waste on him. If you have a daredevil child it’s a great way to fly through the airport.

Standard Suitcase with a Seat

Rather than buying a specific suitcase for your toddler, this option is a slightly different type of ride-on luggage.

There are two add-on products that you can attach to the adult luggage you already have, which can reduce the number of bags you are bringing for the family.

The Lulabug seat is super portable and can easily be packed away when not in use, whereas the Mountain Buggy Rider has an additional carry-on suitcase that doubles as a backrest and can hold up to 15kg (2-3 year olds).

There’s also MiaMily that has a seat already built in and you don’t need any additional luggage or accessories.

If you’re traveling alone with your kids this is a great choice as it means you don’t have to bring yet another piece of luggage to handle. Most places we go we generally only bring one travel stroller for the two kids, but this allows our oldest to have a seat of his own on top of the suitcase to rest after running all around the airport.

What should i be aware of when flying with my baby.

When you and your baby fly with Lufthansa, you are in good hands because our special services are entirely orientated towards your wellbeing.

Important information about preparing for a flight with your baby

Night flights are especially suitable for travelling with babies as they can maintain their sleep pattern and consequently be more relaxed.
During the aircraft’s ascent and descent, you can help your baby to equalize the air pressure by giving him/her a dummy or a bottle.
Changing tables can be found in the washrooms on board.
There is also water suitable for babies’ bottles on board so that it is unnecessary to purchase water after you have passed through security control.
We also have spare nappies available on board for emergencies.

What do I need to consider when travelling with a pushchair or buggy?

At most airports, it’s possible to use a foldable pushchair 1 or buggy and to hand it over just before boarding. It will be returned to you immediately after landing. Please enquire at baggage drop-off whether you can take your buggy or pushchair with you and hand it over directly at the aircraft. Please also remember to tell staff if you will need your buggy or pushchair 1 for a connecting flight. At the departure gate, our staff will make sure that your buggy or pushchair 1 is taken on board. Once the aircraft reaches its parking position, the buggy or pushchair1 will be returned to you at the passenger boarding bridge or, in the case of a bus transfer, at the foot of the aircraft boarding steps. If you do not receive your buggy or pushchair1 on arrival, please contact one of our gate staff or the nearest Service Center. Please note that the return of your buggy or pushchair1 may take a few minutes. Is there baby food available on the aircraft?

Yes, but we still recommend taking along your baby’s favourite food or bottle, as the availability of baby food on board Lufthansa flights is limited. We will happily warm up baby’s bottles or food for you on board. There is also water suitable for babies’ bottles on board so that it is unnecessary to purchase water after you have passed through security control.

From what age must a separate ticket be bought for a child?

Children aged two or over, or who will turn two during the trip, require their own seat. In the latter case, the child fare applies to the entire trip. Please note that for safety reasons only one baby per adult is allowed on board. However, if you have a second child under two years old travelling with you, you have the option of booking a seat and taking an appropriate child restraint system, such as a baby carrier or child car seat, on board with you.

Where can I get a bassinet for a long-haul flight?

We have special bassinets available on our entire long-haul fleet: these are perfectly suited to babies under 11 kg in weight and under 67 cm in length. The number of bassinets on board is limited. You can reserve a bassinet up to 52 hours before your flight departs. Please note that, depending on your booking class, a seat reservation fee for the seat with the bassinet may apply. Do I need a child seat in the aircraft?

A child restraint system, child car seat or baby carrier can be used on board to increase the passive safety of babies and children (up to about 7 years of age). Their use is voluntary.

The brand's bags aren't as durable as others we've tested in the Lab, so I recommend this set for someone who isn't planning to fly frequently. According to one GH analyst who has used this set for nearly a decade, the bags have still held up well to repeated use. She added that the softside polyester material is slightly worn with some fraying and scuffs, but the bags are still useable, and the important features, like the telescopic handles and zippers, are in working condition. When we evaluated other suitcases from American Tourister, testers highlighted the smooth and stable wheels, and online reviewers say they roll nicely, despite only moving forward and backward.

It did hold up well in our drop tests though, with no serious denting or breakage after being released repeatedly from a set 3-foot height. When testers rolled the suitcases through our luggage obstacle course, around turns and over different surfaces from wood to carpeting, they were impressed by the maneuverability and wheel performance.

As the name implies, these Delsey Helium DLX suitcases are some of the lightest we've evaluated in the Lab. No more lugging around bulky bags or struggling to lift your carry-on into the overhead bin. Despite being so lightweight, these bags are tough. In our tests for durability, the luggage held up well after being released repeatedly in our drop tests, and the softside nylon material showed no signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth 15,000 times by our abrasion tester.

In our evaluations, we found the exterior zippers a bit tricky to use, and the bags received lower scores for maneuverability than other suitcases we tried, but they did earn high scores for their comfortable gripped telescopic handles and for being easy to pack. All three of the suitcases open into one primary packing compartment with compression straps, and the lids of each bag are equipped with zippered pockets and elastic sleeves for additional storage. When we packed the bags in the Lab, we appreciated how smoothly the zippers opened and closed and how much we could fit inside.

The polycarbonate material is super lightweight — even lighter than some of our favorite softside luggage — and ultra-durable. It performed well in our drop tests, remaining in great condition after being released multiple times from a set 3-foot height. In our scratch tests, the bags showed minimal scuffs and markings. One caveat: Our consumer testers gave the telescopic handle lower ratings for feeling a bit wobbly when fully extended. The bags received high scores for their maneuverability and smooth wheels. Actress Shay Mitchell's trendsetting travel brand offers carry-ons, checked bags, weekender bags and more — all thoughtfully designed. I'm especially a fan of the chic monochromatic color options — even the metal of the telescopic handle matches.

When we tested the brand's suitcases in the Textiles Lab, my fellow GH analysts and I were impressed by how well the luggage withstood dents and damage after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. We did note that the material was more prone to scratches and scuffs than other luggage we tested. The suitcases open butterfly style, exposing a spacious zippered compartment and a compartment with a secure compression strap. A few smaller pockets help keep your things organized. You can choose which pieces to include in your luggage set , so the price and number of pieces vary depending on your selections.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test all kinds of luggage to determine which pieces are worth buying. We evaluate luggage in the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and share it with consumer testers who bring the luggage on their own trips and then provide us with valuable feedback. Here's what we look for when we test suitcases:

Size and weight: To ensure that the brands' listed dimensions for the suitcases are accurate, we measure each bag in the Lab. We weigh the bags and place carry-ons in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to make sure the suitcases meet most airline restrictions.

More Americans are traveling abroad with over “one-in-five Americans planning on vacationing in a foreign country in the near future,” according to Reuters . I myself head to Sweden for a few weeks every summer to visit my in-laws, and packing our suitcases with clothes—both sweaters and bathing suits because Swedish weather can be unpredictable—along with gifts for relatives is a days-long undertaking.

When traveling internationally, most people focus on important stuff like updating passports, understanding customs requirements, making hotel reservations, and planning exciting itineraries, but choosing the right luggage for your long-haul trip ranks up there in ensuring you and yours have a fun and hassle-free trip.

“Choosing the right luggage helps to keep your trip smooth and uncomplicated,” says Ivette Manner s, a travel and bridal writer who goes around the globe for her job several times a year. “I travel often for work and leisure and like to keep things simple. You don’t want to rush through airports, customs, taxis, and public transport being bogged down with a lot of baggage—and you don’t want to make the mistake of leaving anything crucial behind.” she says.

What to consider when choosing luggage for international travel

Situation equals size.

Whether you’re jetting off for a weekend wedding or embarking on a multi-city trip will help you decide which type of suitcase you need: carry-on, mid size, oversized, weekender, and more. Also, how many are in your party? Traveling solo or with family, friends, or loved ones?

Visiting Europe with my family for two or three weeks means we need larger, checked luggage paired with smaller carry-on backpacks and totes for the flights. When traveling for work, Manners takes “one roomy, zip-top tote bag and a medium-size suitcase.” The length of stay, and purpose of travel will help determine the size and type of luggage you need.

Airline compliance

It is zero fun to have to check your carry-on last-minute or pay extra exorbitant fees because you overstuffed your luggage and exceeded weight and size limits. “As soon as you book your flight, check the airline’s baggage allowance and restrictions policy,” cautions Manners, so you can stay within the baggage dimensions. “It’s a good idea to invest in a bag within the baggage dimensions allowed by the airline(s) you frequently travel on, so you’re not surprised at the airport with extra baggage charges,” she adds.

According to TravelPro , while most domestic airlines allow you up to 35 pounds for carry-on baggage for domestic flights and 50 pounds max for checked luggage (though you can pay extra for up to 70 pounds), international travel often caps carry-ons at 18 pounds. The exception being British Airways which allows a whopping 51 pounds for carry-on bags! Kayak says that a carry-on bag should be no longer than 21.5 inches long, though this does vary airline by airline and I have friends who swear they fly everywhere with their 22-inch long carry-on. To be safe, and avoid trouble, always check ahead to know your baggage allowance before your trip!

To stay in compliance—and if you’re someone who tends to overpack (insert raised hand emoji)—Manners recommends getting a luggage scale to keep yourself in check. “Some people also swear by packing cubes,” adds Manners, which some say allows you to pack even more while keeping clothing sorted and wrinkle-free. If you’re new to, but interested in packing cubes, Manners recommends purchasing inexpensive options on Amazon to see if they would work for you before your next big trip.

Luggage should last years and is a worthy investment, but with many high-quality and low-cost options on the market you don’t have to break the bank. Legacy names like Samsonite keep innovation and quality high while still being fairly priced. “Look at a brand’s warranty,” advises Manners, which safeguards against wear, tear, and damages that happen frequently with luggage. For instance, the premium brand, Briggs and Riley , comes with a higher price tag but a lifetime guarantee. I chose bags for this list from around $100 to several hundred dollars to meet all your price points and needs.

Materials and mobility

“People love those fancy aluminum suitcases ,” says Manners. “But while they look super chic, they’re not always practical, not to mention super expensive.” They get banged up and scratched and you have to take them to the brand to get repaired. “But polycarbonate hard shell suitcases can take more wear,” she says. Other things to consider in a suitcase are the materials: are you looking for soft or hardshell? Also, pay attention and test out zippers, locks, roomy interior compartments that can expand, and the durability and quality of wheels.

“I like medium-size check-in suitcases,” says Manners.” It helps keep you from overpacking, but allows you to take what you need for a week of travel. And you’ll be able to move around easier in transit.” If traveling alone or sharing a suitcase, we find medium size suitcases (usually around 26-28 inches in length) to be ideal. Look for suitcases that can expand and compress for extra packing needs. Weighing around 10 pounds empty, you can pack a lot, but make sure you don’t go over the airline weight limits.

Tips for buying a suitcase for international travel

Online retailers and outlet stores are both great places to buy luggage , especially during major shopping days. But you should first check the baggage requirements of the airline you intend to fly, including restrictions, and extra charges, so you’re not met with any surprises.

Once you’ve determined your right size, Manners suggest “finding one with well-made spinning wheels and a comfortable, sturdy retractable handle.” Another thing to consider is the material, like soft side, hard side, waterproof, etc. And don’t forget important details, like durable zippers, solid locks, and lots of room and interior compartments to pack everything you need. St. Petersburg is the second biggest city in Russia with about 5 million inhabitants. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and it became the capital of Russia in 1712.

While the city had several names throughout history ( Petrograd and Leningrad ), since 1991 it's called St. Petersburg, though locals often lovingly call their city by its nickname Piter.

In any case, St. Petersburg is a beautiful city with impressive buildings, great restaurants, and lots of things to see and do!

Things to know when planning a trip to St. Petersberg

What is the best time to visit st. petersburg.

We visited St. Petersburg in May and had good (but not perfect) weather during our visit.

It wasn’t too hot, around 20 degrees Celsius and during our sightseeing tour, it was a bit cloudy but dry. We also had some rain, though luckily not that much.

Obviously, you can't control the weather (our tour guide said there was snow at the start of May, which was very unusual), but in general, Spring is a great time to visit St. Petersburg.

Temperatures are perfect for sightseeing (not too hot or too cold) and the long days mean you have plenty of time to explore this beautiful city.

Do I need a visa for St. Petersburg?

That depends… Some nationalities don’t need a visa to visit Russia . Furthermore, when you are visiting St. Petersburg as part of a cruise (or a ferry trip from Finland) and you stay 72-hours (maximum) you do not need a visa. More information can be found here .

However, we visited St. Petersburg as the starting point for our Trans Mongolian Express trip and therefore we needed a visa (we spent 13 days in Russia in total).

It wasn’t difficult to get a Russian visa with our Dutch passport, but we needed a whole bunch of documents (such as a letter from our Health Insurance and a visa support letter).

Requirements may be different for other nationalities, you can check with award-winning tour organization Real Russia (we booked our trip via them, they provide excellent service and can help out with visa as well) or look online to check which rules apply to you.

How to get to St. Petersburg city center from the airport

There are official taxi stands at Pulkovo airport selling tickets with a prearranged price (between 900-1100₽, depending on your exact destination in the city).

You pay at one of the taxi booths located within the airport and will be handed a paper with your destination. You hand this paper to a taxi driver and off you go.

Alternatively, you can book a taxi via Gett (a taxi app similar to Uber). We paid 1234,70₽ (€17) for our trip into the city.

Mind you, this can be a lot cheaper if you book the economy car but we ordered a Gett Kids with a baby seat (suitable for babies older than 9 months) which costs more.

How to get around St. Petersburg?

St. Petersburg has a metro system, buses, mini-buses (called marshrutkas), and trams. However, the city center is quite compact and we explored everything on foot as our Airbnb was very centrally located.

That being said, some attractions in St. Petersburg are located further from the city center (such as the Peterhof Gardens and Catherine’s Palace) and you’ll either need to use public transport or a taxi to get there.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit either of these places nor did we get to visit a Kommunalka to see how many residents of the city still live as they did during Soviet times.

But that gives us something to look forward to on our next visit when our son is a little bigger and venturing a bit further afield is easier.

Walking tour around st. petersburg.

The Singer House in St. Petersburg Russia

We did a 3-hour walking tour around St. Petersburg (booked via Real Russia ). Our guide was a lovely Russian lady called Anna, who has been living in St. Petersburg her entire life.

Anna led us around her city, showing us the many highlights and impressive buildings.

We admired the beautiful Church of our Savior on Spilled Blood, strolled over buzzing Nevsky Prospekt and marveled at the size of the Hermitage.

Along the way Anna shared her in depth knowledge of Russian history and culture.

The length of the tour was perfect for us. Our baby boy was happy to sit in his stroller during the 3-hour tour watching the world go by, but he started to get a little fidgety towards the end.

The Hermitage

The second biggest museum in the world (only surpassed by the Louvre) holding over 3 million artifacts

Our guide told us that if you would spend one minute admiring each item in the Hermitage it would take you 14 years (without eating or sleeping) before you would have seen everything.

Fun fact: did you know the Alexander Column in the Palace Square ( in front of the Hermitage) isn’t fixed upon the square block but it held into place purely by it’s own weight?

The entrance fee for the Hermitage is 700₽ per adult, free for kids under 18.

The Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood

The Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is officially known as the Church of the Resurrection of Christ.

However, in 1881 there was a (mortal) attack on Tsar Alexander II when his carriage passed by this church and it subsequently received its more ominous nickname…

Despite this rather depressing historical fact, the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is beautiful and impressive. It was built in the typical medieval Russian style, with colorful onion-shaped domes.

The interior of the church is cover by more than 25.000 square meters of mosaics which took 25 years to create!

The entrance fee to the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood is 350₽ per adult and free for kids younger than 7 .

The Russian Museum

Here you can find Russian art, both classic as well as contemporary. The building itself is very beautiful as well!

The entrance fee for the Russian Museum is 500₽ per adult and free for (pre)school children . This ticket is also valid for St. Michael’s Castle (see below).

St. Isaac’s Cathedral

We didn't visit the Cathedral itself but climbed 262 steps to the 43-meter high colonnade. From the balcony around the colonnade, we had a great view of the city!

Note: bring a baby carrier if you are traveling with kids too young to climb the many steps (or a baby that can't walk yet, like our 10-month-old). We left our stroller at the entrance to the colonnade, under the watchful eye of the person checking the tickets.

Nevsky Prospekt

The buzzing lifeline of St. Petersburg with lots of things to see, on both sides of the road. We really enjoyed walking along this famous street! There are many many many buildings and stops to make here, here is my top 5:

Yelisey Brothers store (your kids will love the Nutcracker inspired display on the outside, as well as all the amazing candy and other creations for sale on the inside in this lavishly decorated shop).

Who doesn't love to explore castles… I always find it fascinating to imagine how life must have been behind the walls in ancient times.

The castle was built for emperor Paul, unfortunately, he didn't get to enjoy his time there for long as he was murdered only 40 nights after he moved in.

The entrance fee for St. Michael’s Castle is 500₽ per adult and free for (pre)school children . This ticket is also valid for the Russian Museum (see above).

Peter the Great Monument(s)

Commissioned by Catherine the Great and another one by her son Paul (the one who was murdered in his castle). The sculpture ordered by Catherine is the most famous and stands upon a huge piece of granite.

Where to find the best (family-friendly) restaurants in St. Petersburg?

After our tour, we had lunch at the Kвартирка Soviet Cafe located at Malaysa Sadovaya Ulitsa 1 just of Nevsky Prospekt (look for the red motorbike with sidecar).

This restaurant was recommended to us by our guide Anna and rightfully so! Stepping into this restaurant is like stepping back in time, into your grandmother’s apartment…

The old lamps, black and white televisions, record player and other paraphernalia from a different century made for the perfect decor to enjoy authentic Russian cuisine.

We ordered Pelmeni, fish cakes and syrnyky (a sweet cheesecake served with sour cream). Everything was very tasty!

The only downside was that they didn't have a high chair for our baby, but the interesting interior kept him busy enough during our lunch;-).

I love Vietnamese food so I was thrilled when we found this place. Pho ‘n' Roll has two restaurant locations in St. Petersburg, we visited the one at the Fontanka river embankment.

The food was delicious, the staff very friendly and there was a baby high chair available for our son. Definitely recommended!

St. Petersburg natives go head-to-head for District 1 council seat

Replacing the city’s aging stormwater and sewage pipes. Increasing affordable housing. Keeping baseball in St. Petersburg and supporting the development of a multi-purpose center at the site of Tropicana Field.

Those are the shared priorities of Bobbie Shay Lee and Copley Gerdes, who will face-off in a citywide race for St. Petersburg City Council’s District 1 seat on Nov. 2.

For the two candidates — both first-time political contenders — the decision to run for public office was about a desire to preserve and advance the city where they both grew up. Still, each candidate has their own vision of how best to invest in St. Petersburg.

Bobbie Shay Lee

Bobbie Shay Lee’s top priority for the City of St. Petersburg is public safety.

The 48-year-old breast cancer advocate, consultant and former nonprofit executive wants to see the city implement programs to combat violence and reduce the number of homicides.

“Lawlessness is excused, and I’m uncomfortable with that,” Lee said.

Her approach to combating crime is two-fold. She’d like to see the city bring back its Violent Crimes Task Force and continue to put dollars toward policing. But the single-mom with a background in clinical social work said of equal importance is investing in programs that foster a healthy community.

Housing insecurity — for example — is something she’d like the city to address. But Lee said the emphasis can’t stop at getting a roof over somebody’s head.

“I know firsthand that building a brick structure and putting people in it doesn’t stop generational poverty,” said Lee, who spent three years directing HomeAid Tampa Bay. “Affordable housing needs to include wrap-around support services or we’re not doing people any favors.”

Lee also said the focus should extend beyond low income residents.

“I think ‘workforce housing’ is the word we need to adopt, because it’s our teachers, our first responders, our artists who can’t afford to live in St. Petersburg and have to travel in,” Lee said.

Beyond housing, Lee said she wants council to invest in community spaces around the city.

Restoring and reopening the St. Petersburg Science Center building, which has been at the center of city debate, is a step she wants taken to increase educational opportunities for kids and to create a multi-purpose community center in her neighborhood.

“Saving the Science Center is how I got engaged [in the race] and is one of the most immediate issues in my community,” Lee said. “There’s a huge opportunity to use the building to create a STEAM hub for our kids. In addition, the space would have a garden and a banquet space for weddings, so there’d be economic impact, too.”

Lee has a master’s degree in policy and administration from Florida State University and has been a lobbyist for Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. She previously directed the Center for Transparency, a nonprofit organization focused on cause-marketing.

Lee has been endorsed by state Rep. Chris Latvala, Rep. Linda Cheney and Pinellas County Commissioner Kathleen Peters. Her campaign had raised $43,565 as of Sept. 13.

Copley Gerdes

Copley Gerdes said creating a sustainable future for St. Petersburg is all about finding balance between promoting economic development, and maintaining the “small-town feel” that keeps locals in the city.

“Our town is a little-big town, and people want to be here because of that,” Gerdes said. “We have to be intentional about keeping it that way.”

The 38-year old financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual said he sees his top priority is supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure.

Gerdes said part of that is investing in programs like the city’s Complete Streets initiative, which was adopted in 2015 and places emphasis on having roadways that support multiple modes of transportation.

“We need to make sure that we’ve got walkable and bikeable areas connecting us to our city, rather than just packing the streets with cars,” Gerdes said. “I grew up on the streets of St. Petersburg playing concrete football and tag. I want my kids to do the same thing.”

Gerdes said he sees growth opportunities for local businesses in his district that he wants the city to support through partnerships with local developers.

“The west side of St. Pete is growing and is blossoming,” Gerdes said. “I think we could really have a bustling Central Avenue. You’ve got a bunch of traffic that goes from the beaches and back and I would just love to see that be this unique area of shops and food and entertainment.”

In addition to development and sustainability, Gerdes, who has been endorsed by St. Petersburg’s police and fire unions, said that continuing to support first responders and public safety officials is vital to maintaining the city. Additionally, he said he wants to use rezoning and public-private partnerships to get more affordable housing built in St. Petersburg.

Gerdes has a degree in religion from Saint Leo University. He founded a pediatric cancer charity with his wife. Gerdes is on the board of the Police Athletic League and is the chair of the community planning and preservation committee for the city of St. Petersburg.

His father, Charlie Gerdes, previously served two terms representing District 1.

Gerdes has been endorsed by Mayor Rick Kriseman, Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice and four sitting city council members. His campaign had raised $55,215 as of Sept. 17.
