Morocco Reopens Its Borders to Citizens of 67 Countries, Including the U.S.

Airspace restrictions will end next month, as regular flights resume

Gavin Hellier

Following strict border closures that left even citizens of its own country stranded, Morocco is reopening its borders to citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, and others. Travelers entering Morocco must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 48 hours of departure and a letter of invitation from a Moroccan company or a confirmed hotel reservation.

The country’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc tweeted that travelers who meet the requirements can now access their flights to Morocco and noted that airspace restrictions in Morocco will end on Oct. 10, from which point flights will be regular. The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued a formal announcement, but the U.S. Embassy in Morocco has confirmed the new requirements. Travelers flying on Royal Air Maroc must wear face masks and abide by COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Emirates has announced that it will resume flights to Casablanca on Sept. 18 and is offering flexible booking options for travelers who purchase a flight by Sept. for travel through Nov. 30. The airline has declared it will cover COVID-19-related medical costs for passengers diagnosed with COVID-19 during their trip, provided their first flight is taken on or before Oct. 31.

Morocco abruptly shut its borders in March, denying entry even to its citizens. A strict lockdown was in place from March through late June. The easing up of restrictions saw a spike in cases this summer, which led King Mohammed VI to warn last month that the country could instate another lockdown, perhaps with even tighter restrictions. Morocco has recorded 92,016 coronavirus cases, with 72,968 recovered and 1,686 deaths.

The country remains under an extended state of emergency until Oct. 10. In Casablanca, there's currently a curfew in place from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m., and local markets must close at 3 p.m. while cafes and shops must close at 8 p.m., and restaurants must close at 9 p.m. In the tourist hub of Marrakesh , there are fewer restrictions, but restaurants must close at 10 p.m.

With the lockdown and border closures, many hotels and riads temporarily shut their doors. According to Fabien Gastinel, general manager of the new Oberoi Marrakech , all of the city's luxury hotels closed, and so far, only one has reopened. "We are currently not open, but we are targeting Nov. 1 as our reopening date," Gastinel told TripSavvy, explaining that the exact reopening date will be decided soon. "And we are definitely looking forward to receiving our dearest guests and showcasing our legendary Oberoi service."

According to Reuters, the Moroccan economy is expected to contract by 5 percent this year. If things start to stabilize this fall, the tourism sector might see some gains soon. In Morocco, the fall and winter tend to bring mild temperatures and sunny days that draw tourists from Europe and the U.S. to enjoy cultural attractions like the museums, gardens, and souks of cities like Marrakesh, hiking and skiing in the Atlas Mountains, and excursions to the Sahara.

Morocco reopened its doors to travelers on Feb. 7 as coronavirus-related restrictions were lowered. After the country's tourism hiatus, there's never been a better time to visit.

Here's a quick look at your best options when booking award flights between the U.S. and Morocco.

Flying Blue

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Flying Blue is the loyalty program of Air France and KLM. These airlines team up to serve most of the world, with exceptions like most of Oceania and Southeast Asia.

Flying Blue doesn't publish an official award chart, but it prices its award flights pretty consistently based on the region to which you travel. For example, flights from the U.S. to Europe price as low as 21,500 miles one-way, plus moderate taxes and fees.

Here's the reason Flying Blue is such a powerful tool for reaching Morocco: Air France prices Northern Africa (countries such as Morocco and Algeria — and even Israel!) the same as it does Europe. You can fly to Morocco for:

  • 21,500 miles in economy.
  • 55,000 miles in business class.

Plus, these prices may drop periodically due to Flying Blue Promo Rewards , which discount various routes between 25% and 50%. For example, below you can see business-class flights from New York to Casablanca for 55,000 miles in business class — but the economy prices are only 21,500.

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Transfer partners: Flying Blue miles are remarkably easy to earn. It's a transfer partner with all the major transferrable currencies, including:

  • American Express Membership Rewards (points transfer at a 1:1 ratio).
  • Bilt Rewards (1:1).
  • Capital One miles (1:1).
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards (1:1).
  • Citi ThankYou (1:1).
  • Marriott Bonvoy (3:1).

When you transfer Marriott points to Flying Blue in increments of 60,000, you'll get a bonus 5,000 airline miles. In other words, 60,000 Marriott points equals 25,000 Flying Blue miles.

Award searches and availability: You can book awards directly at airfrance.us . If your dates are flexible, leave the travel dates blank. You'll be taken to a convenient calendar view of award prices.

ANA Mileage Club

travel restrictions royal air maroc

ANA is a member of Star Alliance, with airline partners that reach just about everywhere on the planet. ANA doesn't fly to Morocco itself, but a handful of its partners do.

When you select your flights on the ANA website, be sure that you use airlines that don't incur fuel surcharges. Think partners like United Airlines, Air Canada, LOT Polish Airlines and TAP Air Portugal, or a mixture of said carriers.

One quirk of booking award flights with ANA is that you can only book round-trip flights. If you don't plan to begin and end your trip in Morocco, ANA miles may not be your best option. You can, however, add a stopover to your trip for no extra miles.

Those who can make it work are handsomely rewarded, though. You can fly from the U.S. to Morocco for:

  • 55,000 miles round-trip in economy.
  • 88,000 miles round-trip in business class.

Related: Fly business class round-trip to Africa for 104,000 miles or less

Here's an itinerary from Newark to Casablanca in economy for 55,000 miles and about $86 in taxes and fees.

travel restrictions royal air maroc

And here's a similar itinerary in business class for 88,000 miles and $158 in taxes and fees.

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Remember, you can add a stopover and open-jaw to ANA Mileage Club awards for no extra miles. So, you can stretch your points and miles even further by booking something like this: Newark to Lisbon, Lisbon to Barcelona and Casablanca to Newark. This would let you see three cities for the price of one round-trip ticket, plus the cost of a one-way flight from Barcelona to Casablanca.

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Transfer partners: You can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to ANA. Read our guide to Amex points to see how easily you can earn points for this award.

Award searches and availability: You can book directly on ana.co.jp . If the dates you want aren't appearing, you can search on united.com and aeroplan.com to see if ANA is being persnickety.

American Airlines AAdvantage

travel restrictions royal air maroc

If you've been earning American Airlines miles thanks to the abundance of shopping promotions lately, you may opt to simply book your flight with American Airlines miles. While prices can be slightly higher than with other programs, the value is still amazing — and you can book your flight from many, many more U.S. airports, making it much more convenient.

American Airlines is a partner of Royal Air Maroc , the flag carrier of Morocco. So if you're headed to Casablanca, you'll be shuttled to one of the North American cities Royal Air Maroc serves (Miami, Montreal, New York or Washington, D.C.) and then fly nonstop to Morocco. Here's what you'll pay:

  • 22,500 miles in economy.
  • 57,500 miles in business class.

Just note that while you'll likely find award availability from your home airport, you may not be able to fly business class on your first leg — especially if it's a short hop. That shouldn't stop you from booking the itinerary which includes up to eight hours in a lie-flat seat.

Below you can see flights from Miami to Casablanca with both economy- and business-class prices. Below each flight time, you can see the words "Operated by Royal Air Maroc."

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Transfer partners: You can transfer Marriott points to American Airlines at a 3:1 ratio. Again, you'll earn a bonus 5,000 American Airlines miles if you transfer Marriott points in increments of 60,000 — so 60,000 American Airlines miles equals 25,000 American Airlines miles. Additionally, Bilt Rewards points transfer to American at a 1:1 transfer ratio.

Award searches and availability: Flights can be booked directly on aa.com .

Etihad Guest

travel restrictions royal air maroc

Etihad miles can be extremely valuable for flights on partner airlines, but often abysmal for actual Etihad flights. One sweet spot is to Morocco on Royal Air Maroc. You'll pay the following for a one-way flight to Morocco:

  • 22,000 miles in economy.
  • 44,000 miles in business class.

Related: Fly to Morocco in business class for just 44,000 Etihad miles

Again, from North America, Royal Air Maroc serves Miami, Washington, D.C., Montreal and New York. While there aren't many routes to choose from, the price is so low that you may consider booking a positioning flight from your home airport to catch a cheap award flight like this.

Transfer partners: As with ANA, you can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy to Etihad. Our guide to Amex points will show you how quickly you can accrue the points you need.

Award searches and availability: Unfortunately, you cannot book Royal Air Maroc on the Etihad website. Instead, you'll have to first find availability on Royal Air Maroc through partners like American Airlines (as illustrated in the screenshot above).

Once you've found the flights you want, note the flight numbers, dates, and departure/arrival times and call Etihad Guest at 877-690-0767. You'll have to give this information to a customer service representative who will book the flight for you. Read this post for more details.

Bottom line

If you've got a reservoir of American Express Membership Rewards points , Capital One miles , Chase Ultimate Rewards points , Citi ThankYou points , American Airlines miles or even Marriott Bonvoy points , you've got a ticket to Morocco from just about anywhere in the U.S. You'll get the best deal, however, if you live near the cities Royal Air Maroc serves — namely, Miami, Washington, D.C., and New York.

Be sure to factor in the taxes and fees that accompany each award flight. Some airlines pass along fuel surcharges that can sharply reduce the value of your points.

Royal Air Maroc Airlines Pet Policy

When planning to travel with your pet on Royal Air Maroc, there are specific guidelines to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for your furry friend. Small dogs, cats, and household birds are allowed in the cabin if the combined weight of your pet and the carrier does not exceed 11 lbs (5 kg). This makes Royal Air Maroc a friendly option for those with small pets, as more than one pet can share a carrier, given they are used to each other and fall within the weight restriction. Please note that the applicable fees vary based on your travel destination.

Pets that cannot be accommodated in the cabin due to size or weight limitations can travel as checked baggage. The maximum combined weight for a pet and its carrier for travel in the hold is 165 lbs (75 kg). Again, fees for this service are determined by the weight of your pet and carrier, and your travel plans. These rules ensure that even larger pets can travel comfortably and safely.

It's important to remember the required dimensions for carriers. For pets in the cabin, carriers should not exceed 21" x 15" x 8" (55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm). For pets traveling as checked baggage, carriers must be robust, leak-proof, lockable, and provide adequate ventilation, allowing your pet to move comfortably within it. These measures aim to provide a secure and comfortable environment for your pet during the flight.

Despite the flexibility offered by Royal Air Maroc's pet policy, some restrictions apply. Pets are not permitted on flights to the UK, as well as on certain chartered flights operated by Qatar Airways. Pets are also not allowed on flights to and from Bilbao. In addition, certain snub-nosed breeds of cats and dogs are not accepted due to the potential health risks associated with air travel for these breeds. Emotional support dogs can travel for free with the necessary documentation, providing comfort for those who require their presence during travel.

Keep in mind that airlines can change these policies at any time, so it's important to verify this information directly with Royal Air Maroc before you book, for the most accurate and up-to-date details.
