If you visit in the fall, Notre Dame is brilliant because it is easily seen on a River Seine cruise . It is also just a short walk from the metro station, meaning you don’t have to get cold walking for miles.

8. Pere Lachaise

Pere Lachaise  is a famous graveyard where the tombs of individuals such as Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, and Edith Piaf can be found. You can take self-guided tours of the cemetery and pay your respects at the graves while admiring the architecture. It is a beautiful space and also well-suited to the Halloween theme of October despite its serene atmosphere.

The Latin Quarter is an entire neighborhood, and if you are planning a trip to Paris, chances are it is already on your radar. You should also consider visiting some of the spooky sites in Paris for a more adult Halloween experience. These sites don’t have ‘displays’ per se. Still, the creepy aesthetic perfectly fits the vibe those wanting a Halloween experience are after. Top choices for spooky Halloween sites in Paris include  Pere Lachaise , the  Paris Catacombs ,  Musee des Vampires , and  Musee Grevin .

The  Paris Catacombs  are a little more eerie than Pere Lachaise, taking you through a tunnel of skulls, which many records show as haunted. The  Musee des Vampires  is a hidden gem by most tourist calculations, located on the outskirts of Paris and run as a privately owned venture. The museum showcases vampire memorabilia and is only visitable via scheduled tours.  Musee Grevin  is much easier to visit, and the wax museum offers regular slots for a Madame Tussaud-esque experience that turns extra creepy for Halloween.

Even though the days are shorter, and it can be chilly, October is still high season in Paris. The big crowds of the summer are gone, and the Olympic Games are over, but Paris is far from being empty or tourist-free. Quite the contrary, actually, expect Paris to be buzzing.

Visitors that are not tied to school holidays are flocking to Paris at the beginning of October to enjoy the lovely combination of mild weather and lesser crowds .

And families are filling up the Parisian streets by the end of the month when schools in Europe are on autumn break.

Hence, if you intend to visit Paris this October, plan ahead!

The most popular sights are quickly sold out and you better make sure to get your hands on tickets in time. Taking care of tickets ahead of time also saves you from queuing and wasting precious time in line.

October is a wonderful time to travel to Paris . You can enjoy indoor and outdoor activities, without the paralyzing heat of the summer months, but you also are mostly spared the rainy and cold winter months. Your chances of mild weather are good.

October is also the best month to take a walk through the beautiful parks of Paris to see the fall foliage. It’s also lovely to take a river cruise or spend time in museums and exhibitions . Early Autumn in Paris is also a high season for foodies, with many events and festivals.

No matter what type of vacation you are looking for, the month of October is a wonderful time to visit Paris.

How’s the October weather in Paris?

Your vacation in Paris in October will likely be characterized by a mix of sunny and cool days. When the sun is out, it’s still pleasant and noticeably warm, but the evenings are chill. 

October is as well breezy, and you always need to be prepared for showers. It rains for about 8 days in Paris during October. But complete rain days are rare.

Temperatures range on average from 9 °C (ca. 48 °F °F) and 16ºC (61ºF) so you can easily spend your day exploring the city without freezing, but you should look for indoor activities during the evening. 

As the month progresses, it will get noticeably cooler though, but you can still expect sunshine and pleasant temperatures.

Despite all the good forecasts and the likelihood of sunny and mild weather, it could still throw you curveballs: you might experience days of rain , wind, storms, and temperatures below 10 °C degrees . Hence, pack a sweater and a scarf!

Where to stay in Paris in October?

If you haven’t booked your hotel in Paris yet, you better take care of it at the earliest. Many European visitors are using the last mild days to visit Paris during school vacation, and October is generally a busy month!

From a sightseeing perspective, the best hotels in Paris are in the 1st to 9th arrondissements . If you stay in these areas, you can expect to have at least one of the major sights of Paris nearby, likely more.

The central arrondissements are also very safe and convenient with many shops, restaurants, cafés, and bars.

In October, you’re best dressed in layers while leaving your summer attire at home. The sun is still pleasant, but overall, it’s rather fresh. The evenings and early mornings are even cold.

Hence, you should bring a jacket and a sweater. A light scarf and a hat can be useful as well.

Paris is a wonderful place to admire the fall foliage! It might not be the first thing you associate with France’s Capital, but there are so many beautiful parks in Paris, that it’s even hard to pick where to go first.

The classic choice would be the Tuileries, the Jardin du Luxembourg, or even the Palais Royal. But if you are in for a rather off-the-beaten-path experience, head to one of the lesser-known parks of Paris. For example:

• The Butte Chaumont, with its astonishing landscapes and amazing views
• Or the Park Georges Brassens with its book market

Nothing screams “Paris” more than its prominent iron lady: The Eiffel Tower. It was built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition. Today, the Eiffel Tower is one of the best spots to appreciate a splendid panorama of Paris.

You can either tour the 2nd level by climbing the stairs or opt-in for taking the elevator. You can also head up to the summit, by elevator only, of course. No matter which level you chose, both platforms are rewarding you with breathtaking views.

However, for many, the summit is the real Paris bucket list item !

The most budget-friendly way to visit the Eiffel Tower and enjoy the view is by using the stairs and climbing to the 2nd floor.

However, tickets for the staircase are only sold on the Eiffel Towers homepage a couple of weeks in advance or with a bit of luck (and lots of queuing) on the day of your visit directly to the tower.

Autumn in the French capital has always been one of my favorite times of year– especially at the beginning of the season, before the days wane into early darkness and the trees are stripped bare. Paris in October is a lively, energizing month that offers plenty to see and do. With the added benefit of crisp air and the opportunity for a little quiet reflection, what’s not to love?

Like September, the de facto New Year in the city , October brings a plethora of events: some of the most important exhibits of the year, free “happenings” for all ages and a bunch of (genuinely) interesting fairs and trade shows.

There’s an undeniable and contagious energy in the air. And while low season doesn’t technically start until the end of the month, October offers a certain balance between excitement and contemplative calm.

Some Pros and Cons of Planning an October Trip to Paris

I’ve already mentioned some of the benefits of an October sojourn– namely, a city that still feels vibrant and full of energy, while moving into its ebb season.

On a related note, October tends to be a bit less crowded than April through September, so you’ll likely have a bit more of the city to yourself.

I’m not suggesting that lines will be nonexistent, nor that getting tables at trendy restaurants or tickets at popular exhibits will be easier. It may just be a tad easier than in peak months.

The other thing that can make this time of year especially pleasant and memorable is the focus on autumnal activities and celebrations.

From wine tasting in Montmartre to all-night art shows and strolls through markets overflowing with bounty, October offers numerous ways to enjoy harvest season– even in the middle of the city. See more on these and other events by scrolling down.

And the cons?

Naturally, every month has its downsides. Technically, high season continues through around mid-October, so flights and rail fares tend to remain high until month’s end or early November. This is why it’s crucial that you begin research early into travel packages and make some decisions that will hopefully save you money.

I always recommend booking several months ahead of time– unless you’re traveling from within Europe, which might mean you can get last-minute deals on flights and trains.

Another potential pitfall?  Especially in the second half of the month, the weather can be a bit discouraging if you want to spend a lot of time outside or go on day trips that involve lots of time in the open air.

Some won’t be deterred by the cooler temperatures– see more on weather below– but when cold rain adds itself to the mix, it can really dampen (quite literally) your adventurous plans.

Weather in Paris: October Trends & Tips for Packing

Temperatures in October tend to be on the cooler side, although, as I’ve remarked in my other monthly guides, unusually high readings have been noted in past years. In general, you should plan for mild to somewhat cold conditions.

The French capital gets a fair amount of rainfall year-round, and October is no exception. At month’s end, chilly and rather abundant showers are common– offering the perfect excuse to duck into a cafe or tearoom for a warming treat.

Minimum Temperature:  10 degrees C/50 degrees F Maximum Temperature:  16 degrees C/60.8 degrees F (please note that warmer max temps have occasionally been registered in recent years) Average temp:  13 degrees C/55.4 degrees F Average monthly precipitation:  57 mm/2.2 inches (totaling around eight days per month) Average Daylight hours: 11.5

How to Pack Your Suitcase?

While there’s the occasional, disturbingly sunny and warm day in October, in general you can expect cooler conditions to reign.

Bring a couple of short-sleeved blouses and t-shirts as well as one pair of lighter trousers, but mainly line your suitcase with warm sweaters and trousers, woolen dresses, warm socks and a waterproof jacket.

Shoes that keep out the wet and cold are also essential– large puddles are common around the city. I also recommend a strong, sturdy umbrella– just be careful not to leave it behind at the cafe table where you take refuge from the rain.

Best Things to Do in Paris in October

In terms of what to do in the 10th month, we’ve tried to balance our suggestions below between lively events and activities that are a bit more laid-back and meditative. I consider such a mix to be ideal at this time of year, when the waning days are likely to make you a bit sleepy and lethargic at times, or desiring of cozy places to retreat to for a little relaxation. Peruse our suggestions in what follows, and then perhaps take a look at the tourist office website for a more complete monthly calendar.

1. Read, think and dream in a cafe somewhere

With autumn descending, it can feel like a relief (at least for me) to not have to rush around everywhere and “take advantage” of the daylight. The convention that says “you must enjoy scorching heat and sun, and spend all day outdoors wearing minimal clothing while you roast your skin like a rotisserie chicken” is one that I generally find tiresome.

So when fall rolls around and it’s once again socially “acceptable” to huddle inside, wrapped up in ample clothing and sipping coffee with a good book in hand, I’m a happy camper.

I recommend aimlessly wandering wherever you happen to be staying and simply settling into a cafe that draws you in. This is how I’ve generally found the places that ended up stealing my heart (and much of my disposable income in the form of coffee).

If you don’t like to leave things to chance, though,  this is a good list of some of the city’s iconic and seductive traditional cafe-brasseries. 2. Taste wine and enjoy traditional harvest festivities  

October is the beginning of harvest season, and even though Paris is no longer a wine-making or agricultural center, it’s still a place where traditions are carried out with elaborate, ritualistic joy. The annual Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre is one such occasion: a curious, noisy, colorful party in and around Paris’ only remaining vineyard, Le Clos Montmartre.

Taste the rare local wine and varieties from other regions of France. Enjoy live music and bizarre processions led by wine “confreries” (brotherhoods/associations) dressed in elaborate costumes.

In 2023, the Vendanges take over hilly Montmartre from October 11th through October 15th. This year, the celebration is themed around the Olympics, anticipating the Summer Games slated to take over Paris next summer.

3. Enjoy an all-night art extravaganza at Nuit Blanche.  

This dusk-’till dawn event is another entirely free one, and it’s a wonderful occasion to acquaint yourself with contemporary art and artists. Open-air installations (many playing on light in interesting ways, as shown above), performances, concerts and interactive “happenings” pop up in the hundreds around the city for two nights a week each October.

4. Shows & Exhibits: My Picks in October 2023

The tenth month of the year is generally one of the best for catching excellent exhibitions around town.  See this page for a nearly complete list of shows around town this month  — and consider my suggestions below.

Amedeo Modigliani: A Painter and His Retailer (at the Musée de l’Orangerie)

This was one of the most-anticipated shows of the year in Paris: a retrospective on the Expressionist master Amedeo Modigliani, most famous for his abstract portraits inspired by traditional African sculptural practices.

The exhibition at the Musée de l’Orangerie explores the enduring collaboration and friendship between Modigliani and Paul Guillaume, the art dealer and gallerist who would fiercely advocate for Modigliani throughout his life, and exhibit many of his masterpieces.

Paintings, sculpture, drawings, and personal correspondence are featured in the show, which runs through the beginning of the year.

Naples in Paris: The Louvre Invites the Capodimonte Museum

The Musée du Louvre has partnered with the Capodimonte Museum in Naples for a spectacular show highlighting some of the great Italian artists and paintings of the Renaissance, from Raphael to Michaelangelo. Some 60 masterpieces from the Bourbon and Farnese collections await visitors.

What Is Paris Weather in October Really Like?

Even though the official beginning of spring doesn't happen until March 21, you'll see (and feel) the transition from winter to spring take place during October, when the Paris weather also becomes even more unpredictable than normal.

Of course, weather patterns differ each year, but if you visit Paris for a week or more during October, you're likely to experience a little of everything this month offers, from warm sunny days to cold rain, wind, and perhaps even snow. 

Paris Temperatures in October:  Average Highs & Lows

Here's a quick look at what October weather in Paris looks like on Fahrenheit (F) and Celsius (C) degree scales for average daily high and low temperatures , which have increased by 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit during the past decade:

• Average daily October high temperature:  48°F (9°C)
• Average daily October low temperature:  35°F (2°C)

If you want to find out what October weather in Paris might be like, looking at the average temperature ranges will give you a better idea than just checking the monthly averages.  You'll also get a much better sense of what to pack - because Paris weather seldom hits the "average" mark for more than a day or two.

Here's the range of daily highs and lows throughout a typical Paris October:

• Range of monthly high temperatures during October:   31°F to 70°F (2°C to 17°C
• Range of monthly low temperatures during October:  10°F to 50° F (-12°C to 10°C)

As you can probably guess from the high end of these ranges, it's not unusual for Paris to have several days during October when daytime temperatures soar into the 60s and as high as 70°F.  Although these temperatures happen frequently later in the spring, they can feel like a heat wave in October.   Stroll through almost any city park, and you'll see Parisians laying on the ground to soak up the sun.

But remember, Paris's climate is unpredictable from one year to the next (and on a daily basis) so you need to be prepared for a range of October weather conditions.

Sun and Clouds during October:  What to Expect

Don't let the brilliant blue sky in this photo of the picturesque Mouzaia neighborhood fool you.  This day, a Sunday, was picture-perfect but by the next day, the sky had turned gray and overcast.  October weather can change dramatically from day to day.

Days begin to feel noticeably shorter this month compared with September.  At the beginning of the month, you'll still experience almost full 12 hours of daylight - 11:37 hours, to be exact - but that number drops rapidly as the month progresses.  By the end of the month, October offers only 9.53 hours of daylight. 

The shift from Daylight Savings time to Regular time toward the end of the exaggerates the feeling of loss, as sunset shifts from around 6:30 pm (18:30) to 5:30 pm (17:30).

On the positive side, October tends to be a sunny month in Paris, with a whopping daily average of 6 hours of sunshine this month. 

Here's what you can expect:

• Average hours of daylight:   10 hours, 47 minutes
• Average daily hours of sunshine during October:   6 hours per day

In a typical year, you can expect about 7-13 days to be totally or mostly sunny. 

How Much Rain Does Paris Get in October?

Paris records about 1.6 inches (about 4.1 cm) of precipitation on average during October.  That's the least precipitation of any month, although of course October is also the shortest month. 

In a typical year, you can expect brief showers on 4-7 days, including maybe 1-3 days when steady rain falls for a longer period of time.  You may also encounter occasional downpours - but thankfully, they don't usually last very long.

Scattered rain showers or sprinkles may occur on perhaps another 5-6 days. If you get caught in one, just duck into a doorway or under an overhanging balcony because the shower will most likely end as soon as it began.

On nights when the temperature drops below freezing, you may see a few snowflakes or even "ice fog," which is exactly what it sounds like:  frozen fog or mist suspended in the air.  During some years, the temperature never drops low enough for this to happen.

Although Paris can be breezy in October, including occasional strong winds (which invariably seem to happen on cold days, producing a significant wind chill factor), conditions are normally relatively calm.  Of course, storms can (and do) happen during any month in Paris, so consider adding a rain-resistant jacket to your packing list - more about that in a moment!

Snow during October is rare for Paris.  A small amount of snow typically falls on 2-4 days this month, but less than an inch accumulates on the ground during most years and it may melt before you see it. 

If you're planning day trips from Paris, you may be wondering about the weather at nearby attractions such as  Versailles Palace and Disneyland Paris during October.  The good news is that the temperature, rain, and other conditions will be very similar to Paris.  Bring an umbrella or rain hat, or be prepared to dash inside if a quick shower hits.

Paris weather often changes rapidly, so pack for a range of temperatures and conditions.  Be prepared to dress warmly on cold or rainy days, but in layers you can shed if the temperature soars. 

In addition to your core wardrobe of tops, bottoms, comfortable walking shoes, and under garments, these are the essentials and options to consider for October:

• A warm jacket or a trench coat with a zip-out lining - water-resistant is ideal.  Consider bringing a rain hat for when you get caught in surprise showers.
• One or two sweaters in case the thermostat soars to 70°, and layer under your jacket or trench for extra warmth on the coldest days and evenings, especially on a Seine River sightseeing cruise or open-top hop-on hop-off bus where the temperature will feel at least 10 degrees colder.  Cashmere (check options on Amazon) is ideal for keeping you toasty outside while not making you sweat inside.
• A pair of comfortable ankle boots and your favorite walking shoes .  Bring both warm and lighter-weight socks .
• A warm scarf, gloves , fleece-lined leggings, and a warm hat are useful on cooler days and chilly nights.  If you live in a warm climate such as Texas or Australia and don't have these items in your regular wardrobe, don't worry.  You can buy what you need once you reach Paris.  Monoprix and Camaïeu offer nice quality items at affordable prices.
• A rain hat or umbrella will be useful if you experience rainy days.  A rain hat takes up almost no packing space, but umbrellas are a little bulkier.  Bring one from home, or buy one in Paris if you need it (umbrellas are also a fun souvenir) - you'll see them everywhere from small convenience stores and souvenir shops where they cost 5-10€ to pricy boutiques and department stores where you'll pay much more.

Is Visiting Paris in October Worth It Despite the Potentially Cold Weather?

Yes, definitely.  You'll feel euphorbic on the bright sunny days, and longer periods of daylight make even the chilly gray days feel quite bearable.  As a bonus if you're in Paris at the end of the month, you see the earliest magnolias, cherry trees, and daffodils start to bloom.

Ah Paree : the City of Love, the City of Light, and one of the best places to see the fall foliage in Europe. Well, that is, if you’re planning to visit Paris in October , of course! Here’s your guide to the French capital in the early autumn; what to wear, where to go, and all that you simply must see (as well as the top events taking place in Paris during October) !

If you are looking on a quick answer as to whether it’s worth visiting Paris in October, then I would say that the city has plenty to offer visitors no matter what the time of the year. Read on to discover the best things to do in Paris during October, as well as some of the top reasons to visit…

If you’re a fan of fall in Europe , then a visit to the French capital during this time of the year is an absolute must. After all, the fall foliage is best during October in Paris, meaning plenty of pretty photo opportunities and lots of excuses to cosy up in quaint cafés or take yourself on strolls around otherwise forgotten museums.

With this being said, if you’re a fan of long days, summer clothing, and warm weather, then October is not the month you should be staying in the City of Love! Instead, opt to plan your visit for early September or late May when the crowds are fewer than in the summer but the weather is actually warm!

Paris is one of those European destinations that is frequented by visitors all year long, and so whatever the time of the year you visit, everything will be open. With this being said, certain attractions such as parks and gardens will typically have shorter opening times outside of the summer months.

It’s worth noting that, whatever the time of the year you choose to visit Paris, you’re more than likely to experience some crowds, particularly at the more touristic spots in the city.

Paris: temperatures 10°- 17°C and around 8 days of rain during the month of October.

One of the biggest considerations that travellers should take into account before heading to Paris in October is the weather. After all, shorter days, frequent cloud cover, and cooler weather are the only two guarantees when it comes to the weather in Paris in the early autumn. A

verage temperatures are around 12 degrees Celsius… But don’t let that put you off! After all, this is one of the European shoulder seasons , meaning fewer crowds and much lower prices than in the summer months.

With the winter just around the corner comes a guarantee of ever-changing weather and that in-between summer dresses and winter jackets phase. In my personal experience, I’ve seen days where the sun can be shining and the sky can be blue, only for it to change completely within the space of just a few hours to heavy rainfall and windy weather.

As such, should you plan on visiting Paris in the fall, I recommend packing lots of layers. That is to say, jackets, cardigans, paired with shorter sleeves. While the air is crisp outside, museum spaces and the Paris metro can get pretty toasty, meaning that you’ll want to have the option to cool down or warm up as desired!

I personally love  this company’s versatile dresses  and typically layer them with cute jackets and sneakers worn together with little ankle boots work  like these ones  well in this kind of weather.

Be sure to also bring along a pair of waterproof boots and a light rain jacket. Though Paris may be pretty when the leaves begin to change, wind speeds can pick up rapidly and light showers throughout the day are not unheard of. Although I enjoy travelling with an umbrella, I find that heavy winds in some city streets means that using an umbrella is often difficult.

Though you’ll soon discover that most people you meet will have a fantastic level of English, it’s only polite to learn a few words of the local language, in this case, French. Bring along a simple phrasebook like this one to help you get by. I also recommend bringing along a travel adapter like this one so you can charge all of your electronics during your stay!

What to do in Paris in October

Everyone has heard of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre and of the clock in Musée d’Orsay. But did you know that you can see one of the finest Italian art collections in the Musée Jacquemart André?

#2 Vendanges de Montmartre   (Montmartre wine harvest)

Every year, a wine festival and bottle auction is held in Le Clos Montmartre   (i.e. the best vineyard in Paris!)  In 2024, the fête will be taking place between Wednesday the 9th – Sunday 13th of October.

As such, be sure to head to the 18th arrondissement to enjoy the wine festival and get the rare opportunity to enter inside the vineyard for yourself! Check for full wine harvest details here.

Now that the crowds are fewer, this is the perfect time to go it alone and get to know the city on a local level… All by yourself! So pack up your day bag, grab your camera and head out to one of the lesser-known corners of the French capital. From the parks of Paris to the creepers growing up the buildings along the wide boulevards, there are pretty autumn leaves and fall tones to be spied around nearly every corner.

So grab your camera and head out on an adventure to see the best autumn leaves in the French capital! Helpful hint: I particularly love the fall foliage in Canal Saint-Martin around this time of the year, as well as the ever-beautiful Place des Vosges.

Another annual tradition during Paris in October is that of the ‘Nuit Blanche’. Literally translated as the ‘white night,’ literally hundreds of Parisian attractions, museums, and cultural centres remained open all night. As of 2024, this event has been moved to the 1st of June.

On this night, there are also other installations for you to enjoy. Four landmarks/ areas of the city (Île Saint Louis,  La Villette, La Porte Dorée, and Invalides) will all have open-air displays to enjoy and will be known as ‘constellations’ on the night.

Known as ‘FIAC’ for short, the 46th version of the art fair was held at the Grand Palais from the 21st of October until the 24th of October 2021. Featuring all kinds of installations, modern art pieces, and contemporary design from all over the world, this is a can’t-be-missed for all fans of art exhibitions. The FIAC was not being held in 2022 and 2023 due to renovations undergoing in the Grand Palais but shall return in 2024.

If you’re a fan of all things costume-related and dressing up for Halloween, then you may well want to head out on the ReR A and take the train to Disneyland Paris .

Though it may be a little too chilly to enjoy a Parisian picnic along the River Seine come October time, that doesn’t mean that the famous French waterway doesn’t have plenty more to offer.

It may surprise you, but the top selling cookie in France is actually the macaron! And when the days are still drawing in early and the weather isn’t particularly great, then a great way to spend an afternoon is to take a Paris cooking class  like this one.

If it’s your first time in Paris, then one of the main things that’s on your bucket list is probably getting to see the Eiffel Tower Sparkle . Well, as well as being illuminated for other events and causes over the year, on October the 1st, the Eiffel Tower is illuminated in pink for breast cancer awareness. The Eiffel Tower has been illuminated in pink each year on this date since 2013.

Getting Around Paris

The Paris public transport system is managed by RATP and comprises of the Métro (underground), tram, RER suburban express train (which interconnects with the Métro inside Paris), bus, and noctilien (night bus). Paris and its suburbs are divided into 6 zones.

For tourists, Zones 1 and 2 are the most important as they cover the city center and all Métro lines. RATP tickets and passes are valid on the Métro, tram, buses and RER. The Métro alone is very efficient and will take you anywhere you need to go within Paris city limits, and sometimes slightly beyond. Buses are less reliable but still offer a good service.

What to Eat

One of the most common French delicacies, a baguette is a long, thin loaf of French bread that is commonly made from basic lean dough. What makes a baguette different from your typical bread is its length and crisp crust. Some of the best places that serve baguette include Boulangerie Brun and Aux Délices de Glacière .

Duck confit is a famous French dish that is prepared using the whole duck. The confit is prepared by employing a centuries-old process of preservation which involves salt curing a piece of meat (generally goose, duck, or pork) and then cooking it in its own fat. Head to Les Philosophes , La Fontaine de Mars , or Bouillon Racine for a fantastic duck confit in Paris.

A croissant is a buttery, flaky, viennoiserie pastry named for its crescent shape. This breakfast favorite comes in a variety of flavors and is made from a layered yeast-leavened dough. The average temperature in Paris in October is 17C maximum and 11C minimum, with a 13% probability of rainfall. As the month progresses, the temperatures get cooler, but during the last years, October was a great month for long walks, outdoor activities, and weekend getaways from Paris.

A quiet month with unique events and festivals and the accompanying beauty of autumn. October is a great time to visit Paris, and in this post I will tell you why.

If you’re planning your trip to Paris and haven’t decided on the best dates to visit Paris, today I’ll tell you about the best things to do in Paris in October and the best things to do in October. If you’re one of those people who can’t stand crowds at tourist sights, you can relax in October.

As a Parisian, you won’t be able to avoid the queues and tourists, but you can minimize the crowds. The end of the high season and the lack of major vacation periods are noticeable on the streets of Paris. Although the weather is a bit chilly, autumn is spectacular on the streets of Paris and provides a postcard background that enhances the experience of visiting the City of Light.

Finally, October brings unique events and festivals that are reason enough to plan your trip around them. Want to know what are the best festivals, events, and activities in Paris in October? Find out below:

Celebrate the Harvest Festival in Montmartre

October is one of the most special and unique festivals in Paris, known as the Montmartre Harvest Festival. This festival focuses on a food festival with activities such as parades, dances and fireworks.

The district, famous for its bohemian atmosphere and for being home to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, is made up of several hills that were once filled with vineyards. Today, some of these vineyards still remain, and after the harvest season in October, a festival is held that is more than 100 years old.

After the grape harvest, on the first or second weekend in October, this festival is held in which thousands of visitors participate. All activities take place around the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with four highlights in the festival program:

• A food festival where you can taste French cuisine accompanied by fine wine. A flea market with hundreds of stalls is set up throughout the neighborhood.
• The harvest parade through the streets of Montmartre with bands, fraternities and the float carrying the harvest queen.
• A grand folk dance of all styles and for all tastes that serves to close the festivities.
• A fireworks display with the Sacred Heart as a backdrop is the grand finale.

One can take advantage of this festival to see the Montmartre district in all its glory and especially to enjoy the gastronomy and wine. All events are free and all are welcome. Check the official dates and times before you travel to Paris and make sure you have a unique experience.

Halloween is now celebrated almost everywhere in the world, and Paris is no exception. In fact, it is celebrated with a special dedication. All over the city, in its museums and parks, there are countless activities related to this day. If you want to experience a terrifying day, in the best way possible, here are a couple of recommendations of the best things to do in Paris on October 31.

The first is to celebrate Halloween at Disneyland Paris. Every Halloween, the park is decorated according to this day and there are activities where the most evil and terrifying characters take center stage. A highly recommended Halloween for young and old alike. If you want to experience this day at Disney, you should plan ahead and buy tickets as early as possible because demand is very high.

If you really want to get into the atmosphere of this holiday, the best thing to do is to visit the Paris Catacombs and its cemeteries. In the former you can see bones and skulls piled deep in the French capital. The cemeteries of Paris are beautiful in their own way, but they can also be terrifying, especially on Halloween. The most famous of these is Père Lachaise, where the likes of Jim Morrison and other celebrities rest.

One of the most special nights of the year in Paris, the Nuit Blanche

If you visit Paris on the first weekend in October, you can experience one of the city’s most special nights. Every first Saturday in October since 2002, the city celebrates the so-called Nuit Blanche or White Night.

Culture takes center stage and throughout the night the streets are filled with artists of all kinds, many museums and halls open in the early morning hours and host exhibitions unique to that day. Music concerts and festivals are also common on White Night. And much of the public transportation to get around Paris runs late into the night. If your trip is more cultural than anything else, you will be very grateful to be in Paris that night.

October is the month of culture thanks to the Autumn Festival.

We can safely say that October is the month of culture in Paris. In addition to the White Night, the Autumn Festival or Festival d’Automne à Paris takes place throughout October. Although it starts in September and ends in November, most of this festival is in October.

During these dates, the more than 45 venues that are part of the festival host a wide range of cultural activities. Plays, music concerts of all genres, dance performances, film screenings–the list is endless. The Pompidou Center, the Odeon Theater, and the Musée d’Orsay are just some of the venues hosting special events on these dates.

Run the 20 km in Paris

Athletes also have a great event to participate in or watch in Paris. In October, one of the capital’s most popular races is held. The 20 kilometers of Paris. This race has been held since 1979 and currently attracts about 30,000 runners from all over the world. The race starts at the Pont de Léna bridge and finishes at the foot of the legendary Eiffel Tower.

Participating in this race allows you to run around many of Paris’s iconic monuments while you play sports and also contribute to social causes, as proceeds from the race go to charity. And if running is not your thing, you can always watch the participants reach the finish line in a unique setting under the Eiffel Tower.

While we’re on the subject of sports, did you know that in October Paris hosts what is considered the best horse race in the world? That’s right. The Grand Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe takes place the first weekend in October at the Longchamp racecourse and is a spectacle in itself.

The world’s best thoroughbreds and jockeys participate in the event in a race surrounded by activities and, above all, much glamour. If you have already seen it all in Paris, this is a different way to enjoy your stay in the French capital.

Visit the Conciergerie in Paris and remember the figure of Marie Antoinette

TheConciergerie or courthouse is a must-see in Paris. This historic building is best known for housing the Sainte Chapelle, one of the most beautiful churches in Paris and in my opinion in the world.

One of the most beautiful churches in Paris and in the world for my taste. But it is not for the chapel that we recommend visiting this complex in October. Marie Antoinette is responsible for it. This famous queen of France was imprisoned in the same building, which became a prison during the French Revolution, during her last days.

And what does this have to do with the month of October, you may ask? Well, it was in the same month but in 1793 that Marie Antoinette was executed in the square now known as the Place de la Concorde. The Conciergerie preserves the prison where she spent her last days, now converted into a chapel, and samples of guillotines like the one used in the queen’s execution, which was one of the key points of the French Revolution.

Enjoy the spectacle of the fountains of Versailles

Autumn offers us one of the most photogenic postcards of the year to visit the gardens and parks of Paris. The gardens of the Palace of Versailles are one of the most beautiful. There are more than 50 fountains with mythological themes in the palace gardens that serve as an attraction for visitors as there is a nightly light and music show from May to October.

Every Saturday and Sunday evening this show is performed in which water moves to music accompanied by a play of lights. It can only be seen from May 22 to October 31, so in the tenth month of the year we have one of the last chances to enjoy the famous fountains of Versailles. And as an added bonus, the gardens of Versailles are especially beautiful in autumn.

Take a walk and enjoy autumn in the Tuileries Garden.

As I mentioned, autumn is the perfect time to stroll through the parks and gardens of Paris. The gardens of Versailles may be in the suburbs, but you don’t have to go that far to see a picture-perfect postcard. In central Paris and near the Louvre Museum are the Tuileries Gardens.

Once the gardens of the palace that now houses the Louvre, they have now been converted into a beautiful park that serves as a meeting place for Parisians. If the weather is nice, you can have a leisurely lunch at one of the park’s kiosk-restaurants or simply stroll around as French nobility did in the old days. It is a good place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.

Take shelter from the autumn chill at the Louvre or visit the Opéra Garnier.

October is almost inevitably a cloudy, rainy or colder day in the city. These days are ideal for taking advantage and visiting some of the indoor treasures Paris has to offer. My top recommendation is a visit to the Louvre. You can spend the whole day looking at some of the Louvre’s most important works of art while it’s raining. And you don’t even need to go out to eat, because the museum itself has restaurants inside and even some stores.

Another alternative is to visit the Opéra Garnier. If it is beautiful outside, it is incredible inside. On cold days you can take a guided tour of the mansion of the Phantom of the Opera and you will not be disappointed. Of course, there are hundreds of other options and you will never stop discovering new places in the city of light

October Temperatures in Paris.

October in Paris is a month of purely autumnal weather. Temperatures are cooler and range from a low of 9 degrees Celsius to a high of 16 degrees Celsius. As for rain, it usually falls about 8 to 15 days a month, so don’t forget your umbrella. However, in October you can still enjoy many hours of sunshine. Sunset usually comes between 7 p.m. at the beginning of the month and 6 p.m. at the end of the month. Don’t forget that the Seine River flows through the French capital, creating a humid climate.

To sum up, in October the cold weather starts to set in, but the temperatures are still pleasant enough to visit Paris.

October in Paris

October falls into what is considered the high season in Paris, which generally runs from April 1 to October 31. But the truth is that the tourist season begins to slow down considerably in October. You won’t have much trouble finding a hotel room or a table at a restaurant, and there won’t be long lines at tourist attractions.

The lack of major holidays and the autumn chill means that the number of tourists visiting the Parisian capital decreases. As a result, prices also go down. In this sense, it is a very recommendable month to plan your trip to Paris.

T his is it! My FAVORITE month for being in Paris. Paris is always a good idea, but Paris in October is hands down the BEST time of the year to visit the city of light ! I have been to Paris more than 50 times, every month of the year, but the month I choose over and over again, i s October. In fact, I just returned from my latest trip, and October in Paris is STILL fabulous!

In October, you avoid the big crowds and high airfares that you experience in the summer months. Although la rentrée takes place in September (when French people experience “the return” to work and school), October still has a feeling of retransform ation. It is the launch of a new cultural season. the French capital re-focuses itself on art reconfirming its position as a cultural mecca with its exciting line-up of contemporary events one after another , showing off why it remains one of the most popular destinations in the world.

And don't get me started on all the delicious seasonal fall foods ! Between the mushrooms and the game meats, it is glorious!

The weather is fickle. You can have gloriously warm and sunny days. Or rainy days. Or even cold weather. All of it in my experiences over recent years is mild. Not too hot, not too cold, it is like Goldilocks finding baby bear's bed to be just right! Unlike the summer or winter months, the average temperature is well, averagely good!  Packing may be a challenge, but I've got lots of experience so I will share all my tips for your Paris packing list.

If you're still not sure whether or not this is the right time of year to visit Paris, I've got some reasons why October might be perfect for you! Whether you’re planning a trip filled with inspiring art and design events or a slow-paced cultural getaway, or you just want to eat(!) here is my full post with ideas to make the most of early autumn in Paris.

What can you do in Paris in October?

Because the weather can be unpredictable I always reserve fall and winter month visits for catching up on my museum visits, shopping, and other indoor activities (theater is a good option too). That is a good thing! I feel less guilty about being inside when there is colder weather. That doesn't mean I don't spend time outside as well!

The fall foliage in Paris in the trees along the Seine, the gardens (a good choice is the Luxembourg or Tuileries Gardens), and the parks are a sight to behold. Like a tapestry of red, orange, and yellow. The trees along the Seine are particularly stunning with their reflections in the river.

Walking is really the best way to see them and in my opinion, one of the best things to do in general (good news: more steps means I get to eat more!). I do so much walking this time of year, spending a lot of time in the crisp fall air (usually under the beautiful blue sky) gives me so much energy to stroll the streets of Paris, dreaming of being a full-time flâneur !

Here is a list of the highlights. I try to keep this post evergreen, please make sure to do additional research on local and seasonal events that may be taking place in the month of October.

Events, Festivals, and Experiences

• Paris Fashion Week a stylish event showcasing womenswear all across Paris with fashion shows and buyer presentations.
• Salon du Chocolat. [Oct 30 to Nov 3 2024] The world's largest event dedicated to chocolate and cocoa, held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in the 15th Arrondissement . This is top of the list for my favorite events after the Salon International de l'Agriculture (which takes place in Feb / March )
• Bonsaï Culture Expo [Oct 26-27 for 2024] held at the Parc Floral (Rte de la Pyramide in the 12th) a great place to see demonstrations, talks, and more!
• Fêtes des Vendanges à Montmartre. An event of daily tastings, art expos, dancing, and films in Montmartre ( 18th Arrondissement ) where you can taste wine produced in the only remaining vineyard of Paris.
• Paris Motor Show [biennial – Oct 14-20 th in 2024]. A perfect event for car lovers as it debuts production automobiles, prototypes, and concept cars.
• Mon Premier Festival. A great festival that gives children above 2 years a chance to discover cinema.
• Asia Now  [Oct 17-20 for 2024] is an art festival held in the 8th Arrondissement that features artistic talents from China, Vietnam, Singapore, and Korea.
• Salon de la Photo is a grand photography trade show at Grande Hall de la Villette in the 19th Arrondissement to witness the latest international photography trends.
• Rolex Paris Masters, (also known as ATP World Tour Masters) is an important tennis tournament that promises exciting matches in the Accor Hotels Arena at Bercy, in the 12th Arrondissement. The dates for 2024 are Oct 26- Nov 3.
• I consider this a special event as I love this clothing brand ! Clare V. has a pop-up at 97 Rue de Turenne in the 3rd arr until December 31st.
• La Parisienne is a 100% women’s event with free yoga, races and other surprise activities in a festive atmosphere. It raises awareness of the benefits of sport and takes place in the 7 th Arrondissement.

Halloween in Paris

• Halloween Decorations at Disneyland Paris. [ Oct through Nov 6, 2023] Although the Parisian streets offer minimal Halloween decor, Disneyland goes all out and brings out a variety of Disney villains, witches, and wicked characters along with spooky adventures. (If you are going without kids, here is my guide to Disneyland for adults !)
• Halloween Evening at Le Grand Rex. An annual tradition of screening the Halloween horror cult classics on the 31st at the Le Grand Rex in the 2nd Arrondissement . The schedule is usually available one week before the event.
• Le Manoir Halloween Festival. During the last week of October, walk through 4 haunted houses at La Villette in the 19th Arrondissement for a perfect Halloween experience. 

Christmas in Paris

• Christmas displays for the major department stores hit their windows at the end of October. The Bon Marché Gauche unveiling is Oct 28th.

Music Events and Festivals

• Jazz Sur Seine is the traditional jazz music festival across the city, organized by The Jazz Clubs of Paris and Ile de France.
• MaMa Festival brings together a wide range of musical genres in the Pigalle and Montmartre districts of the 18th Arrondissement .

Culinary Delights of October in Paris

Paris is one of the major food capitals of the world and visitors couldn't ask for a better time of year to explore the food scene! The crisp air builds an appetite and it is a great time to indulge in many of the seasonal ingredients, dishes, and drinks with unique autumn flavors. To get a true taste of food in Paris, you need to know what to buy, what to eat and where to go.

What to eat in Paris in October

The food of France puts a lot of emphasis on using what is in season. The French prefer eating seasonally and will often seek out vegetables, fruit, and cheese that are in season, sometimes only for a few weeks. It is a good opportunity to really appreciate and embrace the cyclical nature of agriculture and the whims of Mother Nature!

What you will find in season and in restaurants in October:

• Fruits in season: apples of all shapes and sizes (there are 400 varieties sold in France), pears (Louise-Bonne, Comice and Beurré Hardy), grapes (Muscat de Hambourg bleuté, l’Alphonse-Lavallé, and the Chasselas de Moissac AOP, and Muscat du  Ventoux  AOP), chestnuts ( marrons ), figs, quince (coming), walnuts ( noix ) and hazelnuts.
• Vegetables in season: squash (France produces over 100,000 tons a year), [white] Paris mushrooms ( champignons de Paris ), also girolle s, oyster mushrooms and  c è pes, pumpkins ( potiron ), potimarron (small winter squash with a flavor like chestnuts) carrots, beets (betterave), turnips (navet), parsnips, Jerusalem artichoke (sunchoke), green and red cabbage, white cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, celeriac (celeri rave), Brussel sprouts (chou de Bruxelles), watercress (cresson), spinach (épinard), leeks (poireau), celery, fennel (fenouil), shallots (échalote), endive, chard (blette).
• Seafood is in season: sea urchin ( oursin ), herring, oysters (especially Marennes Oléron), red mullet ( rouget grondin ), bream, and (my favorite) scallops ( coquilles St. Jacques ).
• Did you know that there are seasonal cheeses ( fromages )? It’s true! Try Roquefort AOP (MY favorite! blue sheep milk cheese), Ossau-Iraty AOP, (sheep milk cheese from Basque country), Marsauceux or Dreux à la feuille (cow milk cheese from Eure-et-Loir), Abondance (from the Alps), Fourme de Montbrison AOP (cow’s milk from the Massif Central), Mont d´Or, or Vacherin du Haut-Doubs AOP (cow's milk from Jura), Pouligny Saint-Pierre AOP (goat's milk from Centre-Val-de-Loire).

In restaurants, be on the lookout for a plateau royale or plateau  de fruits de mer (plate of the fruits of the sea), a tower of raw and cooked shellfish served cold on a platter or plates of fresh oysters. A great scallop dish this time of year is a carpaccio of scallops. Other starters to try are soups with root vegetables, squash or pumpkin, or chestnuts, so good!

A wonderful seafood main course this time of year that is one of my favorites because I love Roquefort is steamed mussels with Roquefort melter over it. When you finish the clams and dip a large chunk of bread into the sauce that is my idea of heaven! I know that cheese and seafood are not supposed to go together, but this combo works!

A great lunch dish is a mushroom quiche, the abundance of mushrooms at this time of year means a very earthy (hearty) quiche. Look for pasta dishes that feature mushrooms as well.

On the dessert side, look for apple and pear tarts and lots of hazelnut-filled treats.

The cool evenings of October bring the perfect excuse for a glass ( or two! ) of red wines. Another great event is the grape harvest festival where the entire city comes together for wine tastings and evening parties.

Save on food costs by visiting the local markets and shops.

Paris restaurants can be expensive, and while it’s worth splurging on one good meal, you don’t want to blow your entire travel budget just on food. Luckily, you can find a lot of treats at the local markets ( here's the etiquette ). You can also ask the hotel staff or locals to recommend small cafes and bistros that they go to. This may save you from “tourist rates” and will definitely have good food.

Important tips to remember

A trip to Paris is wonderful but there are some tips to make it even better. Here are a few things to remember:

• During some weeks and weekends, there are some Western European countries (including France!) where schools are on break from the middle to end of October until the beginning of November – which means more people! It's called All Saints' break (Vacances de la Toussaint) which may impact your plans.
• Consider the Paris museum pass if you are going to visit several museums, please investigate the Paris Pass thoroughly to make sure that you will actually save money, it is a great way to save money if you use it a lot!
• I don't write about finances, but before coming to Paris make sure you check with your credit card company to ask about foreign transactions fees, those can be a gotcha that surprises you when you get back home and see your bill! I am not sure how much cash you will want to have on hand (ATM fees, etc.) but Mr. Misadventures and I do try to pay for as much as possible this way so we don't have the shock of fees! Even just a little bit of cash is beneficial for cafés and such.
• If you are thinking about a weekend trip outside of Paris, think about southern France on the French Riviera, like Cannes or Nice in the South of France. More northern regions like Brittany and Normandy begin to have gloomier weather and low temperatures will arrive to them faster this time of year.
• If you are going to visit the Eiffel Tower, visit in the early morning, buy your ticket ahead of time, and be prepared for it to be a bit brisk at this time of year!

The Weather in Paris in October

The weather in Paris in October varies from day to day…hey, isn't that just like everywhere else in the world? Generally (I like to put this disclaimer because I feel as each year passes, there are no norms when it comes to weather) the month begins on a sunny note, but clouds gradually increase during the second half of the month.

As I mentioned a few times, temperatures in Paris are among the mildest with average high temperatures of 55°F (13°C) and average low temperatures of 46°F (8°C). Temperatures seldom dip below 41 °F (5°C), whereas they can climb up to 64 °F (18 °C). The reason that I love to be in Paris at this time of year is that I have personally experienced so many fantastic trips where the days are in the mid-'60s with sun and that is just perfect!

Paris weather in October

Weather patterns these past few years are very unpredictable, so I want to share the averages and then what we have seen in the last few years. (I used World Weather Info as my source of information.)

• Weather in Paris for Oct

Weather in October in Paris:

• The temperatures in October in Paris: It can get low temperatures as low as 57 degrees F (13 C) and a high temperature as high as 65 degrees F (18 C).
• Sunrise and Sunset: You can expect sunrise at around 8 AM- 8:15 AM and sunset at 6:45 PM-7 PM.
• Rain: Always expect some rain. Better to carry an umbrella at all times.
• Snow: Snow in October is a very rare phenomenon.

What to Pack for Paris

The all-important question! The first thing you should know is to relax! I know there is a mystic around French women, Parisian women, in particular, so figuring out your Paris outfits might bring a certain level of stress, but trust me when I say that one of the secrets to Parisian style is simply not caring what others think!

As is often the case when you are packing for a trip abroad especially at this time of year, it's important to take into account the possibility of shifting Parisian weather. If you're traveling to Paris in October, chances are that temperatures will still be relatively nice with warm days, but don't count on it! As I mentioned before, the weather forecast for October is persnickety.

October is not the coldest month in the city, but It is possible to experience cold weather in Paris (December, January, and February are colder months) during the latter half of October. And you will definitely have a cold night or two any time of the month, and likely a day or two of wet weather.

• What to Pack for October in Paris

October in Paris is a beautiful month, showcasing the city amidst the changing leaves and cooler, crisp air. It's a time for enjoying the quieter side of Paris, with fewer tourists and a more relaxed pace. Packing for October means preparing for a range of activities in variable weather conditions. Here’s what to include for a cozy and stylish Parisian autumn.

• Layers: Include options for warm and cooler weather, such as t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and sweaters.
• Warm jacket: A heavier trench or wool coat for chilly days.
• Scarves, gloves, and a warm hat: Essential accessories for the cooler temperatures.
• Closed-toe shoes: Comfortable for walking and suitable for cooler weather.
• Warm trousers and jeans: Keep warm as the temperature drops.
• Rain gear: An umbrella and a waterproof jacket to stay dry during October showers.

The Parisian autumn, with its cool air and fallen leaves, calls for footwear that’s both comfortable for walking and suitable for unpredictable weather.

• Waterproof boots: Ideal for rainy days and exploring.
• Comfortable sneakers: For long days of sightseeing.
• Dressy shoes: A pair that can be worn for a nice dinner out or an evening event.

October’s fluctuating temperatures and the possibility of rain mean carrying a bag that can handle everything from an extra layer to an unexpected purchase.

The following packing list and packing tips will help ensure that you have the appropriate shoes and clothing for a range of weather conditions.

Clothing + Accessories

• No matter what you pack, the most important thing to consider is that comfortable clothes are going to serve you best, it doesn't do you any good to look great if you don't feel great! That is top of the list in my book.
• When packing for a trip to Paris during autumn, it's a good idea to go for neutral colors that will match everything. Pack at least one neutral light sweater, some basic t-shirts in light and dark shades, at least one long sleeve shirt, maybe a button-down shirt that you can wear on top of the tee, and several pairs of pants, including nice jeans with comfortable shoes.
• Be sure to add a lightweight coat, scarf, and travel umbrella just in case the weather takes an unexpected turn.
• For chilly stretches, you'll find yourself wishing you had a warm coat, but I think the most practical type of coat is a trench coat or a light jacket that's water and wind-resistant. It should be a lightweight coat or lightweight raincoat that's both warm and water-resistant. I would rather dress in layers under the coat and peel them off as needed than be too hot in a heavier coat.
• You may not need gloves or a hat once you arrive in Paris, but it's still wise to bring along a few different scarves. I never leave home without 2 or 3. I bring at a least light scarf (usually 2) and one of heavier material that will come in handy if the weather takes a turn for the worse and it can change the look of your outfit. Silk scarves go a long way to make an outfit look fancier. Simply add it to a dressy top and you are ready for the evening!
• The little black dress is a classic for a reason (every French woman I know has one) and your scarf will add a touch of color to change the look over multiple nights.
• Or opt for a lightweight dress that will be appropriate for daytime affairs, but can also transition into night with the addition of some tights and boots.

Shoes, oh heavens. This is the one that keeps me up at night! You don't have much space (or weight allowance) in your average suitcase, so figuring out the best shoes for your outfits can take a little thought.

• Like your clothing, having 1 or 2 pairs of comfortable walking shoes is going to be far more important to you and your feet. If you have been reading Misadventures with Andi for any length of time you will know that I am a huge fan of Jambu shoes which allows me to wear stylish shoes that are comfortable. There is a wide selection. From sandals and heels to boots and athletic shoes.
• I recommend waterproof shoes (which many of the Jambu are) because of the possibility (however slight) of rain.
• I do not recommend high heels unless the heel is a chunk or wedge heel. All the cobblestone streets make high heels a nightmare!
• I stick to closed-toed shoes. Paris is a big city and the streets are dirty. In the gardens, the paths are dusty stones (you can rarely walk in the grass) and by the end of the day, your feet are very dirty if you wear open-toed shoes (in my experience!).
• There was a time when I would have said not to tennis shoes, but times they are a-changing! Now it is okay (does the lefthand talk to the right, sometimes I wonder…but that is fashion what is a “no” today, maybe a “yes” tomorrow!) and there are new French brands (like Veja ) that have become very popular. White tennies are a thing, but if you read the bullet point above you'll likely understand that keeping them white will be a struggle!
• If you are bringing boots, wear them on the plane as they are likely your heaviest and most awkward-shaped shoe.

A few things to avoid

While there is no dress code, there are a few items that I would avoid.

• The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) may be able to get away with a fanny pack, but unless you want to scream tourist, please don't wear one of these! (I know fanny packs tried to make a comeback and crawl their way back into our closet, but that was only in America!)
• Shorts are frowned upon but you can dress them up (although not likely in October) but short shorts are a no-no.
• While t-shirts are a great layer to have in your arsenal, I don't wear a lot of graphic tees while in Paris, okay, I never wear graphic tees while I am in Paris. I prefer solid neutral colors or my beloved stripes. If you are going to bring graphic tees, try to avoid any “I love Paris” ones – they scream TOURIST! A lot of French women wear graphic tees dressed up with either a leather jacket or sport coat, it is the incongruence of the 2 together that makes it cool.

Is October the best time to visit Paris?

So, it's finally that time of year again, one of my favorite times to visit the city of love, can you see why? The leaves are changing colors and the air is crisp (at least for a few more weeks). And that means it's a great time to get your Parisian travel plans sorted!

You should definitely consider planning your next trip during this month!

• Look for fares using sites like  Skyscanner or Expedia.com . 
• For France (Paris) coming from the West Coast , I typically fly Air France or United. From the East Coast , I typically fly Air France or Delta.

• For rental car agencies, try  Rentalcars.com . When traveling in Europe, I use  AutoEurope  to make reservations. They find the best rates and allow you to compare different car rental agencies. I typically book with Sixt .
• For transportation from the CDG airport to anywhere within Paris, consider pre-booking with Get Transfer . It is one way to be stress-free and you can request an English-speaking driver.
• I book tours with companies like Viator and GetYourGuide . Both have a wide variety of activities for every travel style. Other companies to look at include Tours by Locals and Withlocals.
• If you’re visiting a city with multiple attractions, be sure to check out a discount pass, such as CityPASS or Go City .
• Context Travel is another option and they offer more educational-based activities.
• If you are looking to buy tickets to attractions, check out Tiquet .
• One of my favorite things to do is to get photos taken of me while on vacation. Flytographer is a great option with photographers all over the world.
• It’s important to have some type of travel insurance to cover any unforeseen accidents, illnesses, threats, or cancellations. I always travel with insurance and would recommend SafetyWing ,  SquareMouth or Travelex Insurance are good options.
• Should you have any trouble with flight delays to the extent you feel you deserve compensation, I encourage you to check out and use AirHelp . I used them and for 1 claim I got compensated (transparency: a 2nd claim did not, but I was still glad I tried!).

France assesses Paris Olympics terrorist threat in light of Moscow attack

Minister and intelligence services meet to discuss security for Games that includes opening ceremony on the Seine

The French interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, has met intelligence services to assess the terrorist threat to the country, after the Moscow concert hall attack claimed by Islamic State raised fresh security fears over the Paris Olympics.

One of the biggest security challenges facing the organisers of the Games in the French capital is to protect the opening ceremony on 26 July. It is planned to be an unprecedented, open-air extravaganza, which for the first time in Olympic history will not take place within the confines of a stadium, but instead involve a flotilla of 94 boats carrying thousands of waving athletes down a 6km (3.7-mile) stretch of the Seine, followed by a further 80 boats carrying media and security, while an estimated 222,000 people gather along the river’s edge and 200,000 more watch from buildings.

More than 45,000 police will be mobilised, with snipers on rooftops and elite officers poised on boats. Airspace will be shut down within a 150km radius around Paris during the ceremony, as the security services prepare for the potential threat of drone attacks.

Darmanin has promised that French police and intelligence services will be ready for the extraordinary security operation and said that while the Games were an obvious future target for attacks, huge efforts and resources had been allocated to the wide-scale security and intelligence operations.

“France, because we defend universal values, and are for secularism … is particularly threatened, notably during extraordinary events such as the Olympics,” Darmanin told reporters this week after the Moscow attack raised questions about a potential threat from abroad. “The French police, gendarmes, prefects, intelligence services, will be ready,” he added, saying that “we have a very effective intelligence system. We stop plots developing almost every month.”

A poll by Elabe for BFMTV this week found that although 80% of French people were worried about terrorism, 59% were optimistic that France would successfully keep the Games secure. A total of 57% of French people thought the Olympics opening ceremony should go ahead in the open-air.

French intelligence agencies are screening up to a million people before the Games, including athletes, staff, volunteers and people living close to key infrastructure, according to the interior ministry.

After the Moscow attack on 22 March that killed at least 140 people, Paris upgraded its terror threat level to maximum – the country has in the past been a frequent target of jihadist attacks, including coordinated Islamic State attacks in Paris on the Bataclan concert hall, restaurants and the national sports stadium in November 2015.

Emmanuel Macron said this week that the IS entity believed to be behind the Moscow attack – known as Khorasan, which is a branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan – had also sought to attack France. “This particular group made several attempts [at attacks] on our own soil,” the president told reporters. The prime minister, Gabriel Attal, said two planned attacks had been prevented in France since the start of the year.

Earlier this month, Darmanin told a senate commission that the type of risk being assessed during the Olympics included the possibility of a move by a lone attacker inside France, or groups outside France paying criminals inside the country to stage an attack. He said there was no specific threat from a foreign group. “We can say today that groups such as al-Qaida or Islamic State have the intention to attack the west and France in particular, but they don’t have the means at the moment.” But, he added, intelligence was not a “precise science”.

Céline Berthon, the French domestic intelligence chief, told the same senate commission that the terrorism risk had been increasing for more than a year. She spoke of “the return of an Islamist terrorism threat linked to external theatres, which we must not lose sight of, amid a tense geopolitical context with terrorist organisations who target the west and will no doubt, as the event approaches, seize the opportunity which the Games are”.

There is also the potential for cyber-attacks during the Games, whether it be hackers targeting the stopwatch clocks at timed events or targeting broader computer systems or transport infrastructure.

The head of France’s national cybersecurity agency told Agence France-Presse this week that the Paris Olympics would be a target, including for foreign states “that want to disrupt the Games because they are not happy for one reason or another, and who might try to disrupt the opening ceremony or cause problems on public transport”.

The warning from Vincent Strubel, director general of the French Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), comes amid strained diplomatic relations between France and Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Strubel told AFP: “Clearly, the Olympic Games are going to be a target. We are getting ready for all types of attacks – everything we see on a daily basis but bigger, more numerous and more frequent.”
