Arrival/Departure History Now Available on I-94 Webpage

Customs and Border Protection launched a new webpage on May 1 that offers nonimmigrant U.S. visitors access to their I-94 arrival/departure record and their arrival/departure history.

The new CBP webpage allows nonimmigrant travelers to access arrival/departure records going back five years from the request date. This electronic travel-history function means that travelers may no longer need to file Freedom of Information Act requests to receive their arrival/departure history, greatly speeding their process. Travelers will have electronic access to the date and port of entry of their arrivals and departures.

When travelers visit the I-94 webpage they can retrieve their I-94 arrival/departure record number and five-year travel history by entering the required name, date of birth, and passport information.

Clicking on “Get Most Recent I-94” will return the I-94 number, most recent date of entry, class of admission and admit-until date. The information does not reflect changes of status, extension of stay or adjustments of status granted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Travelers then have the option to print the record.

Clicking on “Get Travel History” will return their five-year travel history based on their I-94 records, which they also can print.

Travelers can also cancel pending Freedom of Information Act requests for travel history information—after they have received the information from the new website—by adding their FOIA Request Number and clicking on “Request FOIA Cancellation” button.

CBP began the online version of Form I-94 in April 2013. The positive public response to that streamlining prompted the agency to offer travel histories online as well.

If a traveler has lost a paper form I-94 that was issued prior to the online system and the record is not available online, the traveler can file a Form I-102, Application for Replacement/Initial Non-Immigrant Arrival-Departure Document, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

How Americans Fell in Love With Taking Road Trips

open-road

Zócalo Public Square is a magazine of ideas from Arizona State University Knowledge Enterprise.

T ens of millions of Americans have hit the road this summer. The all-American road trip has long been a signature adventure, but once upon a time the notion of your own motorized excursion of any length would have seemed impossible.

In 1900, Americans were hampered by wretched roads and limited by the speed and endurance of the horses that powered buckboards, coaches, and wagons. If they had an urge to travel far distances, they had to rely upon the steam locomotive.

As fantastic as it might have seemed at the turn of the 20th century, the idea of supplanting the iron horse with the horseless carriage did catch the fancy of some intrepid men and women. Eager to test the technological limits of their new contraptions, a few hardy souls set off upon far-reaching expeditions between 1900 and 1910.

Colorado attorney Philip Delany, recounting his 1903 excursion from Colorado Springs to Santa Fe observed: “and so the machine is conquering the old frontier, carrying the thudding of modern mechanics into the land of romance. . . .” Such travel meant seeing “the wildest and most natural places on the continent,” encountering more than a few hints of danger on steep and rocky mountain roads, and reliving the exploits of American pioneers. “The trails of Kit Carson and Boone and Crockett, and the rest of the early frontiersmen,” he declared, “stretch out before the adventurous automobilist.”

At the same time, some city dwellers simply sought an escape. Early 20th century urban environments had their drawbacks: sidewalks overflowing with scurrying pedestrians; streets crowded with unending waves of trolleys, delivery wagons, carriages, and pushcarts; the persistent stench rising from mounds of horse manure; raw sewage emptying into open gutters; rotting piles of uncollected garbage and dense clouds belching from factory smokestacks.

Upper-middle-class tourists motored through the countryside and then camped by the side of the road, finding the sentimentalized image of the gypsy or the tramp quite a compelling identity to assume. They reveled in their sense of independence from stodgy summer resorts and the tyranny of inflexible timetables set by railroads or steamship lines. They delighted in the beauty and serenity of unspoiled countryside. In the same article quoted above, Philip Delany observed that “when [the automobilist] is tired of the old, there are new paths to be made. He has no beaten track to follow, no schedule to meet, no other train to consider; but he can go with the speed of an express straight into the heart of an unknown land.”

In its infancy, however, an automobile could not deliver most Americans from their urban frustrations—for most Americans could not afford to own and operate one. At a time when average annual salaries might not reach $500, many automobiles might cost between $650 and $1,300, securely beyond the grasp of all but the wealthiest. Moreover, with few garages, filling stations, and dealerships outside of city limits, even the infrastructure required for the care and feeding of the automobile could be difficult to locate and could drain the motorist’s wallet. During their earliest years, neither automobiles nor auto touring could be considered within the reach of the masses. Automobility would only become pervasive over time, thanks to rising wages, falling prices for used cars, expanding opportunities to buy these machines on credit, and, especially, the introduction of Henry Ford’s revolutionary Model T in 1908.

Even for those Americans who could afford the first horseless carriages, to go off the few familiar paths in most parts of the country, especially in the great distances of the trans-Mississippi West, required a large measure of self-reliance. One motor traveler characterized the roads of his native Wyoming in 1909 as “deep ruts, high centers, rocks, loose and solid; steep grades, washouts, or gullies . . . ” He went on to note that, “unbridged streams; sand, alkali dust; gumbo; and plain mud, were some of the more common abominations.” Between the obstacles presented by such abysmal road conditions, the likelihood of frequent mechanical breakdowns, and the rarity of supplies to sustain driver and vehicle, these early outings always required an audacious spirit.

Aspiring long-distance auto tourists back then were counseled by self-proclaimed experts to carry abundant quantities of supplies. Those who made the first transcontinental drives between 1901 and 1908 hauled along ropes, blocks and tackle, axes, sleeping bags, water bags, spades, camps stoves, compasses, barometers, thermometers, cyclometers, first aid kits, rubber ponchos, tire chains, pith helmets, assorted spare parts, and sufficient firearms to launch a small insurrection. Mary C. Bedell’s impressive list of gear, published in her entertaining 1924 account of auto touring, Modern Gypsies , typifies what was carried by the most dedicated motor campers both in scale and variety: “tent, duffle bags, gasoline stove, Adirondack grate and a kit of aluminum kettles, with coffee pot and enamel cups and saucers inside”—an array of equipment that added “four or five hundred pounds” alone to the weight of the fully loaded automobile. A car so laden, puffing along western trails, bears a striking resemblance in the mind’s eye to a hermit crab staggering across the ocean floor burdened with its house on its back.

Even as motoring Americans loaded up their cars with the contents of their local hardware stores, however, the growth in their numbers year by year provided alluring prospects to entrepreneurs in small towns and great cities throughout the West. Garages, gas stations, roadside cafés, and diners began to pop up along more frequently traveled routes while hotels, restaurants, and general stores started to advertise in the earliest guidebooks produced by organizations such as AAA and the Automobile Club of America. Following the lead of Gulf Oil in 1914, gasoline retailers commissioned maps branded liberally with their logos for free distribution at their service stations. Motorists once left entirely to their own devices now encountered a rapidly evolving infrastructure of goods and services.

Meanwhile, governments at the local, state, and federal levels began to invest increased engineering skill, construction efforts, and tax dollars in road improvements. While motor tourists by the end of the World War I might still encounter 10,000 miles of battered gravel trails littered with potholes for every 10 miles of carefully surfaced and maintained roads throughout the country, the increasing pace of improvements made it far easier to drive through the West than it had been for those who had attempted such a journey only a decade before.

Although still new to the American scene by 1920, the road trip thus had begun to take on a shape familiar to modern eyes. Above all, the automobile was assuming a dominant role in popular recreation as more and more Americans incorporated it into their visions of recreation and leisure. As costs fell and reliability increased, as the successful outings of the few began to inspire the many, and as the thrill of this new technology spread through an ever-wider range of the populace, motoring for pleasure insinuated itself as a notion in the minds of many Americans. Indeed, less than a decade after the turn of the 20th century, author William F. Dix could assert that the automobile had become nothing less than a “vacation agent” for motor-savvy Americans as it “opens up the countryside to the city dweller, [and held out the promise of] great national highways stretching from ocean to ocean and from North to South.” Over those highways, he continued, “would sweep endless processions of light, graceful, and inexpensive vehicles . . . carrying rich and poor alike into a better understanding of nature and teaching them the pure and refreshing beauties of the country.”

While Dix fell far short as a prophet of social or technological developments, his sense of how inextricably linked the automobile would become in the leisure pursuits of Americans has been thoroughly borne out by the evolution of the American road trip.

Peter J. Blodgett is H. Russell Smith Foundation curator of western historical manuscripts at the Huntington Library and editor of Motoring West Volume 1: Automobile Pioneers, 1900-1909 . He wrote this for What It Means to Be American , a national conversation hosted by the Smithsonian and Zócalo Public Square

The Complete Travel Bucket List for History Buffs

I’ll start with a confession: I am a complete history buff. In particular, I’m fascinated by Russian aristocracy. And while the failings and fables of Russian royalty completely enthral me, I find all cultures to be fascinating. In fact it is perhaps the weirder, the better. The stranger and more unbelievable the tales are, the more I believe them. So with that confession out there for the world to see, lets take a look at the complete history travel bucket list. This is a checklist for travellers who love diving into the weird and wonderful, but most importantly, the real. These are real historic places with stories to tell. How wonderful this world is!

St Petersburg Russia | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

St Petersburg, Russia

We will begin with one of my favourite cities in the world: St Petersburg . And certainly it would be my top choice for history lovers. There’s just so much to discover in St Petersburg and it becomes more and more fascinating the further you dive into the history of Russia.

This being the historic capital of Russia, there is a lot to unpack. It all starts in the heart of the city at the Hermitage Museum . But this isn’t any ordinary museum. This is the historic Winter Palace which once housed royalty. So as much as the museum is about the art collection in which it possesses, it is also just a fascinating building in itself.

And of course, if you visit the winter palace you must make your way to the summer palace, too. Located outside of the city perimeters, Peterhof was commissioned by Peter the Great. What is great about this palace is that it has largely been kept intact. Not just inside but outside, too. The summer gardens are a story in themselves – with trickery fountains and quirky trimming of hedges. You really can’t dream this stuff up!

Machu Picchu, Peru

Chances are you have seen photographs of Machu Picchu before. It is no secret this location has quickly become one of the most sought after destinations in the world. This Incan citadel sits high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. It is undeniably picturesque, especially given no two visits ever feel the same. The clouds play a big part in changing the feeling of the place, though it always feels magical due to the mystery that surrounds it. The use of Machu Picchu remains a mystery, which adds to the ethereal nature of the site. You can visit as a day guest or make your way by the Inca Trail, a four-day, three-night hike to the site.

Jaipur, India

There are so many historical sites to visit in India that it would be unjust to pick just one. So instead we’ve picked a city instead. Jaipur is but one of many cities to visit in India, however for history buffs it is essential. There are endless historical sites to visit, including the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and the Amber Palace. Jal Mahal is another fascinating site, a palace built in the middle of a lake. And when you tire of Jaipur, you’ll find plenty of other historical sites to visit throughout India (like the iconic Taj Mahal).

Petra, Jordan

Dating to around 300 B.C., Petra was once the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. Containing tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, the site has earned the nickname “Rose City”. The site pictured (and that which has made its way around Instagram and Pinterest many times) is known as The Treasury. The famous structure stands at 45 metres high, a temple with an ornate Greek-style facade. Traversing rugged desert canyons to get there makes this location even more ethereal. So if you’re looking for an epic destination with enough history to last many lifetimes, this is one for you.

Complete guide to Rome

Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

The Vatican City is the smallest country in the world by land mass, but it certainly packs a punch for things to see and do. As the centre of Catholic faith, The Vatican has a lot to unpack. And it all starts with the Sistine Chapel, certainly an essential bucket list for history buffs.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the chapels of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City Stat. It is also where the pope’s official residence is located. The name Sistine Chapel comes from Pope Sixtus IV who ordered its restoration between 1473 and 1481. Since that time this chapel has served to celebrate papal acts and ceremonies of the Catholic Church and continues to be of the utmost significance to the church to this day.

Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is the ancient capital city of Japan and as such, it is without a doubt a bucket list destination for history buffs. Located in the Kansai region, Kyoto continues to have a high importance to Japanese people to this day and thanks to its incredible history it is one of the most visited cities in Japan for international tourists.

Kyoto is famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples. There are so many that you’ll need at least a few days just to see the highlights! Kyoto is also home to many gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. Then there is of course the famed Bamboo Gardens, which I have had the pleasure of visiting twice. On my second visit years later they were much more crowded, so you can expect to share the serene walkway with other visitors. My top tip is to arrive as early as possible to beat the crowds.

Visit the mysterious Easter Island

Easter Island is quite a magical place as well as it is mysterious. Its native name is Rapa Nui, which it is still sometimes referred to today, especially by the locals who inhabit the island. Before I visited, I remember reading about the mythical moai statues, which to this day remain quite a mystery.

The moai statues are carved figure heads and there are variations throughout the island. Be sure to visit all of them as you will soon start to hear stories that unpack their significance and purpose. It is quite intriguing indeed!

Egypt

Egypt is the country that links Africa to the Middle East, which in itself is reason enough to visit. This unique blend of cultures has evolved over the years, but one thing that has stayed the same is just how much depth there is to the history and culture of this land. The country is concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River and was the home of one of the principal civilizations of the ancient Middle East and was the site of one of the world’s earliest urban and literate societies. Pharaonic Egypt was thriving for some 3,000 years through a series of native dynasties that were interspersed with brief periods of foreign rule. After Alexander the Great conquered the region in 323 BCE, urban Egypt became an integral part of the  Hellenistic world . There is much more history to discuss about Egypt, as it has played an integral role throughout history. But the best way to experience Egypt’s fascinating history is to of course visit for yourself and really feel the earth beneath your feet.

athens_greece

Athens, Greece

Athens is the capital city of Greece and has an incredible history to unpack. Ancient Greece was once a powerful civilisation and empire and was of course at the heart of Greek methodology. To this day the city is still dominated by prominent landmarks, leaving much to discover for history buffs. For example be sure not to miss the Acropolis, a citadel on top of a hill overlooking the city. Inside the museum you can view preserved items from the time including vases, sculptures and even jewellery. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Last but certainly not least, Angkor Wat in Cambodia is not one but a series of temples that make up this ancient site. You might recognise some of the temples from the famous film Tomb Raider, which is said to be when Angelina Jolie herself fell in love with the country on set. Many do not know until they visit that Angkor Wat is also the largest religious structure in the world by land area. It measures a whopping 162.6 hectares, so be sure to allow a full day to visit!

A few snapshots from Island life in Koh Samui 🥹🌴 just shared my blog posts from this trip in Thailand and now craving mango sticky rice pudding, the kindness and hospitality of Thai people and those buffet breakfast spreads (the kinda ones that keep you full til dinner). My stay at @fskohsamui was like something out of a story book. Especially that last photo - that night was one to remember 🫶🏼 #kohsamui #thailand #travel #travelblog #thailandtravel

Our 16-day 5-stan tour was super organized. Everything worked out wonderfully. The only thing that caused us difficulties was the unofficial currency exchange rate in Turkmenistan. For this you need enough USD, because no credit cards work. Thank you for the great trip and the exciting impressions!

5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India(ALL INCLUSIVE)

I went on a 5 day Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India, and it was a truly amazing experience! The tour included visits to the historical cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, and it was a great way to experience the rich history and culture of India. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and professional, and he made sure that we got the most out of each destination. We visited the stunning Taj Mahal in Agra, the majestic Amber Fort in Jaipur, and the ancient Red Fort in Delhi. In each place, we had the opportunity to learn about the history, architecture, and culture of each area. We even had the chance to experience the vibrant street life of India. The hotels we stayed at were very comfortable and gave us a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The meals included in the tour were delicious, and gave us the opportunity to sample the local cuisine. Overall, this was a wonderful tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience India’s rich culture and history.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of using Karim as a tour guide. We have taken a trip through “Hunza Explorers” in Pakistan in December 2018. Karim is diligent, thorough and professional. His knowledge and expertise of traveling in Pakistan has been invaluable to us. He has always been on top of everything from the moment we presented him with our travel ideas. Karim is energetic and easy to work with. Karim has been at our constant disposal before and after our trip. Working with us on heritage tours of Pakistan, he helped make our trip memorable and great experience. We didn’t think it could get much better, but we just returned from a 3-week trip to Pakistan that Karim crafted and it was a trip of a lifetime. Everything ran like clockwork. Karim is now handcrafting our next trip to Hunza Pakistan this year and again He is right on target – we highly recommend Karim and Hunza Explorers for all of your travel needs.

5 Days Private Golden Triangle India tour from New Delhi

We wanted to thank you for the tour you organised for us. We had a great experience every day with each of the tour guides being very knowledgeable and giving us a really good talk, walks and sightseeing. We also wanted to say our thanks to Danish. He was absolutely brilliant. From the moment he picked us up to the moment he dropped us back at the airport, we felt very safe with his driving. He is very very courteous, excellent driver, extremely polite and friendly. He always arrived on time and waited for us wherever we went. So thank you again and please pass our thanks to your colleagues and especially to Danish!! The only thing that could have been better would be a choice of hotels. Delhi hotel was poor, Agra was good, Jaipur was ok.

India\'s Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure) Tour

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)

I was a little anxious about this tour as I was a solo female traveler and had read some reviews of not so great experiences. I want to say I had the best time and everything was fantastic! In Delhi I had Alvina as a tour guide and she was knowledgeable and helpful. In Agra I had Ahmit as a tour guide and I have to say he really knew the history as well, especially about the Taj Mahal which was an amazing experience. The last tour guide I had in Jaipur was Bhawani, he was super friendly and knowledgeable as well. The fees to the monuments are not included but it does say that when you book it. I already knew I would have to tip each guide and the driver as it is the culture here to do that but they were all appreciative about it and it was well deserving. I saw some reviews about being taken to the different shops but once again you don't have to buy anything and if you want to skip them you can ask your guide and there is no issues. Hotels were great especially the last one in Jaipur, it was a homestay with great hospitality. Last but not least thankyou to my driver Arvind! He made everything so smooth and comfortable. I can't express how much he made the trip so much better with his kindness and knowledge. Thankyou so much Arvind!

What people love about Historical Tours

With a guided tour, you can not control the weather or your travelling companions. I was lucky with both, so that helped! That aside, on my tour through the 5 Stans there were so many things that could have gone wrong. There were the 3 weeks in hotels, the three internal flights and the guides for each leg of the journey. It has to be said that all of this was well managed by Steppe Travels. The communication was great, the hotels were better than expected and all the guides were excellent. There were some long days of travelling, but the itinerary was well thought through and everything worked well. Overall, it was a great trip and Steppe Travel met all my requirements. I recommend them.
I could not have wished for a better experience. Senol from Turkey Tours could not have been more helpful. He attended to every detail and checked in to ensure everything had gon
It was Budget Tour for Everyone. We are so happy with the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in Delhi, I was greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who made me feel right at home. The tour covered the three iconic cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, also known as the Golden Triangle. Each city had its own unique charm and history, making the tour a perfect blend of culture, history, and adventure. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. Words cannot describe the beauty and grandeur of this iconic monument. The tour guide shared fascinating facts and stories about the Taj Mahal, making the experience even more enriching. In Delhi, I was able to explore the bustling streets of Old Delhi and visit popular landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. The city has a vibrant energy and the tour allowed me to immerse myself in its culture and traditions. Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, was a visual treat with its stunning architecture and colorful markets. The visit to the majestic Amber Fort was a highlight of the tour, with its intricate designs and breathtaking views of the city. The accommodations throughout the tour were top-notch and the food was delicious. I also appreciated that the tour was all-inclusive, so I didn't have to worry about any additional expenses. I recommend the 5 Days Historical Golden Triangle Tour of India to anyone looking to experience the rich history and culture of this beautiful country. The tour was well-organized, informative, and truly an unforgettable journey. I can't wait to visit India again and explore more of its wonders.

History Tours & Travel Guide

History Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Many tours and small ship cruises have an element of history in their itineraries. However, some of the most historical places in the world — Rome, Athens, Angkor Wat , and Egypt, to name a few — lend history the focus of their trip for true history buffs.

You can find history tours and trip itineraries that specifically cater to history lovers. Some tour operators specialize in offering historical travel tours and offer many exciting activities for hands-on interactive exploration.

Things To Do on Historical Travel Tours

A history trip is a fascinating way to journey through time and explore the wonders of history with a dedicated, knowledgeable guide. You can explore ancient ruins, dig into the mysteries of the pyramids, bust the myths about medieval castles, or stroll through the cobblestone streets — there's something for everyone on our selection of historical travel adventures.

Going Beyond the Museum

For a truly immersive historical experience, it's far more interesting to trace the footsteps of ancient people and cultures than to stare at artifacts encased in glass. The pasts represented by said artifacts come alive after experiencing the history outside the museum walls.

Luckily, the definition of a museum has evolved in recent years. Many are outdoors, follow a specific theme, and are more interactive than they used to be.

For example, a museum in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to hats! And, believe it or not, there's a museum in France dedicated to vampires.

There are so many avenues through which you can get a sense of culture and history; your history trips will hit many of them. Food, art, architecture, clothing, and even water sources all shape the history of people and places. The information you learn on a historical vacation will significantly enhance your appreciation of history.

Interactive History Tours

Discover how ancient people used to build their dwellings, savor the taste of historical cuisine of the Victorian era, learn to dance traditional folk dances or trace the footsteps of famous authors and artists.

No matter where you're traveling, interactive history tours provide an exciting link to the past for culture explorers . Especially if you're traveling with keen learners like children, activities where "history comes alive" are an absolute pleasure and are often included on history and not-history-specific tours.

Temples, Ruins, and Castles

From the spectacular Angkor Wat temple to the proudly standing ruins of the Forum in Rome and every anglophile's dream at Lancaster Castle in the UK , history tours will undoubtedly showcase impressive architecture.

Whether they still exist intact or are mere skeletons of their former glory, buildings such as these are always engaging and interesting to visit, especially for travelers aged 18 to 30 and 50+ . They also offer spectacular photo opportunities!

Access to Information and Privacy Travel History Report

In this section.

A Travel History Report is a record of a traveller's entries, exits or both into Canada. This information is collected by the Canada Border Services Agency ( CBSA ).

Retention period for a Travel History Report is 15 years.

The CBSA began collecting traveller exit information on foreign nationals (excluding American citizens) entering the United States from Canada on June 30, 2013 . As of July 11, 2019 , the CBSA collects exit information on all travellers (including Canadian and American citizens) in the land mode and in the commercial air mode as of June 25, 2020 . Exit data may also be requested through the Travel History Report.

Highway Passage Reports may also be requested; however, they indicate only that a specific licence plate has been recorded, and do not show the people travelling in the vehicle.

Information collected for Travel History Reports

The records for both Entries and Exits include:

  • date of birth
  • citizenship
  • date of entry
  • location of the port of entry, and
  • any document numbers associated with that travel, such as a passport number

When not to ask for a Travel History Report

When you request your Travel History Report directly from the CBSA it can take up to 30 days to complete. There are many reasons you may require your report, but sometimes requesting it directly is not the best option. When your travel history is needed as part of an application, such as the application for Canadian citizenship, check the form for the option to release your report. Using this option means that you will not have to request it yourself. When this option is available, requesting the report directly from the CBSA will cause a significant delay to your application process. Listed below are the three applications that do not require you to request your report directly from the CBSA .

Applying for Canadian Citizenship: Adults and Minors

If you are applying for Canadian Citizenship, you do not need to request your Traveller History Report from the CBSA. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) can collect the report on your behalf when needed since consent to share information about the entry/exit information is no longer required.

Applying for Canadian Citizenship: Unaccompanied Minor

If you are applying for Canadian Citizenship you do not need to request your Traveller History Report from the CBSA . Checking "Yes" on page 6, Question 9 (b) of your application form permits Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada ( IRCC ) to collect the report on your behalf.

Applying for a Permanent Resident card

Best Hotels and Resorts

Cities to visit, best things to do, best beaches, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Crete, Greece's largest island, clocks in at more than 3,000 square miles and offers plenty of ancient history, incredible food, and natural beauty to explore. But you don't have to take my word for just how special Crete is.

"I often describe Crete as a compact, island version of California. We have surfing and backcountry skiing in winter. In summer, we have canyon hiking, mountaineering, and, my personal favorite, hidden beaches only accessible by boat. And the shoulder seasons are — chef's kiss — perfection," Anastasia Sotiropulos, a tour guide based in Chania, Crete, shared. "The real treasure of Crete, though, are the people. The farmers, cheesemakers, fishmongers, artists, restaurateurs, winemakers, musicians, and homemakers create unique experiences for those lucky enough to visit this incredible island."

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay at a hotel with stunning Mediterranean views, like Elounda Bay Palace or Domes of Elounda.
  • Explore the ancient Palace of Knossos.
  • Catch some sun on Elafonissi Beach, one of the world’s most beautiful pink-sand beaches.
  • Wander the streets of Chania’s Old Town to admire Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture.
  • Visit during the shoulder season to avoid the hottest temperatures and largest crowds.

Ready to start exploring for yourself? Here's everything you need to know to plan a trip to Crete.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Elounda Bay Palace

This luxury hotel has long been beloved for its mix of elegance and charm. The rooms and suites here open up to sweeping views of the azure Mediterranean waters, and the hotel's private beaches ensure you can always find a chair (and an umbrella). Make an appointment at the Chenot Spa, which offers massages, facials, and body treatments using science-forward ingredients and techniques.

Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection

Looking to stretch out? Domes of Elounda is the place to be. Known for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the historic island of Spinalonga, the resort is home to just suites and villas, which open to fantastic patios with private plunge pools. Yes, this hotel comes with its own spa, but guests can also indulge in an in-room treatment to truly never lift a finger.

Courtesy of Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa

Blue Palace

Blue Palace was named a Travel + Leisure reader favorite in the 2023 World's Best Awards , and in 2024, it's getting a whole new look. The renowned hotel is reopening as a modernist boutique hotel with just 47 bungalows and suites, all with brand-new interiors and some with private plunge pools. But even if you don't book a room with a pool, that's okay, as the hotel sits just steps from the beach anyway.

Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa

Find yourself in a 17th-century Venetian mansion-turned-boutique hotel at Casa Delfino . The hotel, located in the heart of Chania's Old Town, allows travelers to stay amid the action while also offering a retreat-worthy rooftop garden that comes with sweeping views of the sea. It's a perfect place for families thanks to its one and two-bedroom suites.

A visit to Chania's Old Town is a must, thanks to its charming Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture. To make the most of your time in Old Town, book a tour with a guide who can show you all the best sights and all the prime spots to get a great meal.

Get in a little more Venetian architecture at Rethymno Old Town , one of the best-preserved historical districts in Crete. The city is built around the Venetian fortress, which provides fantastic panoramic views from its hilltop location. Don't skip the artisan shops where you can find the perfect souvenir.

No visit to Crete is complete without a visit to its capital, Heraklion . Here, visitors can check out numerous historic sites, the Archaeological Museum mentioned below, and all the city's bustling markets, cafes, and bars. And as a bonus, the Palace of Knossos is just a short drive away.

Explore the Palace of Knossos.

Dive into more than 4,000 years of Greek history at the Palace of Knossos , Crete's most iconic archaeological site. The ancient complex is absolutely massive, and it comes with a gorgeous view of the sea thanks to its position high on the hill. "Crete's most famous archaeological site is the great Minoan Palace of Knossos, the oldest, largest, and most elaborate of these sites," Peter Sommer of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. "In its wide courts, shaded colonnades, and intricate arrangements of room after room, floor after floor, one can really come to grips with a civilization from far back in the Bronze Age, and grapple with questions that are still hotly debated – what did these palaces look like, what were they for, who lived in them, and how did they function?"

Hike the Samaria Gorge.

Outdoor lovers will adore spending a day hiking through the Samaria Gorge, a lengthy hike through Crete's White Mountains. The hike stretches on for nearly 10 miles through ancient cypress and pine forests and the abandoned village of Samaria before ending at the sea. However, the most famous part of the hike has to be the "Gates," where the gorge is just 13 feet apart but is more than 1,500 feet high. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plan to hike the entire trail. The park's official site estimates that it takes about five hours to complete the journey.

Visit the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania.

Take a stroll through the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania and take in all the colors of Greece. Travelers can walk past homes and buildings showcasing Crete's unique melding of history, including all its Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences. Shop in its boutiques, grab a frappe in a cafe, view the massive fortress, and dine on plenty of fresh ingredients (hello, Greek salads) at its waterfront restaurants. Just make sure to have your camera ready, as its colorful buildings make for the perfect Instagram backdrop.

Learn something new at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Get an even deeper education on the island's history with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , which houses the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization. Its most famous exhibit is the Phaistos Disc, a clay disc sporting more than 240 symbols that is said to be more than 3,000 years old. As the museum notes, "experts have not yet a definitive conclusion of the contents of the inscription," so maybe you can uncover what it all means during your visit.

Elafonissi Beach

Get ready to step foot on one of the world's most beautiful and romantic beaches, Elafonissi Beach . The stretch of shoreline is well-known for its pink sand — created by millions of crushed seashells —that disappears into shallow, turquoise waters. The beach, which is part of a nature reserve, is an ideal spot for families with small children thanks to the calm waters, but there are also plenty of spots for adults to put down their towels and umbrellas for a quiet day at the beach.

Balos Lagoon

One more brilliant beach to visit is Balos Lagoon , a beach made up of brilliant white sand that's lapped by unbelievably blue water. "One of the most popular must-see places in the Chania region is the Balos Lagoon with hypnotizing turquoise waters and a panoramic landscape," Alonso Marly, a travel expert at Skylux Travel , said. "I suggest visiting the beach early in the morning to experience the lagoon at its most tranquil and skip the tourist crowds."

Find a different style of landscape at Vai Beach , famous for the palm forest lining the coast. Once again, it's a spot where travelers can find warm, sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, just this time with the bonus of tree shade for the perfect beach snooze.

The best time to visit Crete is from June to August when the weather on the island is at its prime. As WeatherSpark notes, the warmest weather can be found between early June and late September, when the average daily high temperature hits above 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Things get particularly hot in July, when the average temperature hits 84 degrees.

"When it comes to the best times to visit Crete, keep in mind that the island is seasonal, and during winter months, most of its attractions are closed," Marly added. "However, throughout the high season, it is full of life day and night."

But, if you're looking to escape the crowds, try plotting a visit during the island's shoulder seasons, which fall over April to May and September to early October.

"If possible, I recommend visiting the island during the shoulder season when it's not too hot and crowded – from April to June or September through October — to make the most of your authentic Greek holiday, full of sunshine and unforgettable experiences," Marly said.

Crete is accessible via its international airports in Heraklion (Heraklion International Airport, HER) and Chania (Chania International Airport, CHQ). Heraklion is the island's busiest airport, and it is also the second-largest airport in Greece, just behind Athens. Several major airlines fly into the airport, including Emirates, Aegean, RyanAir, EasyJet, and KLM.

For those looking to avoid the airport, there is a ferry option, but be warned: It's a long ride. Travelers can hop aboard a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens to Heraklion or Chania, but the ride can take between nine and 10 hours.

The best and easiest way to get around Crete is with your own car. Remember, this is Greece's largest island, so if you want to explore more widely, you will need some wheels. There are a ton of rental car companies on the island, including big names like Avis, Budget, and Hertz, all ready to loan you a ride.

Public Transit

Crete also has a robust public bus system that can get you to most points of interest. Just note the buses here tend to move more slowly than cars, but it's also a rather affordable option, with rides starting at just a few euros.

Scooters are also a rather popular mode of transportation here, as they are in almost all of the Greek islands. Visitors do need a valid license to rent scooters and must wear a helmet while riding.

Could Mexico's Chepe Express be the ultimate slow rail adventure?

Take an epic rail adventure into the Copper Canyon for river kayaking, zip-lining and opportunities to learn from remote Indigenous Rarámuri communities.

Travelling 220 miles through northwestern Mexico from the coastal city of Los Mochis in Sinaloa to the mountain town of Creel in Chihuahua, the Chepe Express is one of Mexico’s few long-distance passenger trains –– and an epic one at that. The train travels through ravines, deserts, gorges and rivers, via 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, to reach the Copper Canyon, a chain of six UNESCO-protected rocky canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Often referred to as the Sierra Tarahumara because of the Indigenous communities that live here, combined they form a gorge that’s four times larger than the Grand Canyon in the US.

The Chepe Express has six modern passenger cars divided into three classes: First Class has panoramic windows, reclining seats and one on-board meal included in the train’s Urike restaurant, which serves traditional dishes from the states of Chihuahua and Sinaloa; Executive Class has spacious seating and access to its own bar; and Tourist Class includes basic, but comfortable upright seating and an on-board snack service.

The journey, which takes nine hours to complete, can be done in a day. However, a hop-on, hop-off ticket allows passengers to explore the Copper Canyon’s towns and sights at a slower pace, staying in hotels or Airbnbs along the route. Highlights include visiting vineyards and waterfalls around the 17 th -century Jesuit town of Cerocahui, located on the edge of the Copper Canyon’s deepest gorge, Barranca de Urique; riding the world’s second-longest zip-line at the Copper Canyon Adventure Park near Divisadero train station, where the mighty Urique and Tararecua rivers converge; and kayaking along the forested Fuerte River.

But perhaps the most singular experience in the Copper Canyon is spending time with the Rarámuri, an Indigenous group that’s lived in the state of Chihuahua for nearly 2,000 years. The arrival of the Spanish in the 16 th century pushed the Rarámuri –– also known as Tarahumara, the name given to them by the Spanish 400 years ago –– into the most remote parts of the Copper Canyon.

Today, the Rarámuri, which loosely translates to ‘runners on foot’ in the Rarámuri language, are best known for their ultra-running abilities, demonstrated in international races and local games like palillo , which involves carrying and throwing a ball over the Copper Canyon’s deep gorges and ravines for several days –– and several hundred miles –– on foot. But running isn’t the Rarámuri’s only skill: cooking with healthy ingredients like blue corn and weaving baskets from natural fibres are just some of the things you can learn while exploring this remote part of northwestern Mexico with them.

Three must-do Rarámuri experiences in the Copper Canyon

1.   Huetosachi cooking & weaving class

In the small Rarámuri village of Huetosachi, 60 miles north of Divisadero station (the penultimate stop on the Chepe Express), the women offer traditional cooking and weaving classes in their homes. First, you’ll learn how to make pinole   –– an ancient drink made with ground corn that Rarámuri runners use to fuel their ultra-marathons –– and tortillas made with blue corn, also favoured by Rarámuri runners for the bread’s high-protein content and anti-inflammatory properties. Then comes the delicate art of basket weaving using the leaves of the yucca plant, which grows wild across the Americas, or sotol, a plant native to the Chihuahuan desert.

2.   The Giants Trail

The Copper Canyon’s rocky cliffs and deep ravines mean that, even today, numerous parts of it can only be accessed on foot. Generations of Rarámuri runners have carved hundreds of trails into the canyon, many of which carry their own legends. Take a guided hike of the three-hour Giants Trail, led by Rarámuri runners from the Bacajipare community, to learn about Los Ganoko –– mischievous giants that are said to roam the canyon near the Urique River. Additional one-hour hikes to nearby rock paintings and Rarámuri cave tombs can also be organised in Bacajipare.

3.   Museo Tarahumara de Arte Popular

Located in Creel’s old train station, the Museo Tarahumara de Arte Popular traces the history and culture of the Rarámuri people from the beginning of Rarámuri life in Chihuahua 2,000 years ago through to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century and up to the present day. The permanent exhibition includes displays of Rarámuri art and textiles, cultural celebrations and religious ceremonies, as well as a collection of 62 photos by French photographer Gérard Tournebize, who lived with and documented the lives of Rarámuri people in the Copper Canyon from 1989 to 1991. Attached to the museum is Casa de las Artesanías, a shop selling traditional Rarámuri arts and crafts.

Visit Nashville, South

  • Accommodation

Known as Music City, Nashville — in the heart of Tennessee — is a place of pilgrimage for fans of country music. Many legendary artists performed here in the early days of the genre, from Hank Williams to Johnny Cash, Elvis to Dolly Parton. Today, you can tour the Ryman Auditorium, once home to the Grand Ole Opry live radio show, and visit museums dedicated to the stars.

Current musicians head to the honky tonk bars lining Printer’s Alley, where they perform country, jazz and blues to cowboy-booted audiences as artists have done since the 1940s. Away from the lively music scene, you can take a walking food tour to sample Southern delicacies, and explore the area’s history through visits to 19th-century plantations and Civil War battle sites.

I never fail to have a good time whenever I visit Nashville. The whole city has a vibrant energy, fed by its deep musical roots. There’s also a long history to explore, and you can’t leave without sampling some of its Southern cuisine.

Things to see and do in Nashville

Enjoy live music along printer’s alley and broadway.

Nashville, Tennessee

Running between Union Street and Commerce Street in central Nashville, Printer’s Alley has been home to jazz, country and blues bars since the 1940s, most of which defied the alcohol prohibition laws in force at the time. Over the years, these bars have provided a performing space for many musicians, including ‘Nashville sound’ exponents Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph and Floyd Cramer.

Today, there are hundreds of places to choose from along both streets where, with a drink in hand, you can listen to smooth saxophone chords or the strums of acoustic guitars. As you stroll along the streets picking your next venue, music from the latest up-and-coming local talent drifts out through open windows.

Tour the Ryman Auditorium

Built in 1892 as a gospel church, the Ryman Auditorium is a performance space best known for hosting the Grand Ole Opry live radio show between 1943 and 1974. During this time, early country musicians including Johnny Cash, Elvis and Hank Williams all graced the stage here, earning the venue its reputation as the ‘Mother Church of Country Music’.

You can take a guided backstage tour of the Ryman and learn more about its history and past performances through a number of exhibits, including original memorabilia and signed posters. Your guide will lead you through dressing rooms dedicated to some of the more famous performers, and you’ll get a chance to step foot on the stage for a photograph. There’s also the option to make your own music recording.

Learn about Nashville’s country music heritage

If you’re at all interested in country music, we suggest the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as your first port of call. Here, temporary exhibitions focusing on specific country musicians can be explored alongside a wider look at the rise of country and folk music from the 19th century to the present day.

Browse the museum’s collection of instruments, costumes, photographs and other original memorabilia and learn more about the music genre through videos and interactive exhibits, including recording booths and songwriting stations.

We also recommend visits to Nashville’s RCA Studio B and the Johnny Cash Museum. Elvis, Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton and the Everly Brothers all recorded songs at the studio. The Johnny Cash Museum has a collection of personal items and memorabilia donated by the musician’s family.

Sample Southern cuisine on a food tour

Southern cooking is one of the most distinctive cuisines in the USA, from meatloaf, brisket and smoky barbecue ribs to fried chicken and catfish. While in Nashville, we recommend you sample some of the city’s culinary highlights on a three-hour walking tour with a local guide.

As you stroll for around 1.6 km (1 mile) through downtown Nashville, you’ll stop at five different eateries to taste a variety of local delicacies. These may include the city’s signature hot chicken (chicken marinated in spicy cayenne paste and fried), barbecued meat and sweet Goo Goo Clusters (bite-size chocolates containing caramel, marshmallow, nougat and peanuts). Throughout the tour, your guide will tell you about the history of Nashville and its cuisine, pointing out key sites you pass along the way.

Relax and admire artwork in Centennial Park

Nashville Centennial Park

As well as featuring landscaped gardens, a man-made lake and a 1.6 km (1 mile) walking trail, the park is home to a full-scale replica of the Parthenon. A focal point of the park, it was restored in 1931 and now houses an art gallery featuring 63 19th- and 20th-century paintings, as well as a 12.8 m (42 ft) statue of the Greek goddess Athena.

Also in the park’s grounds are a historic steam locomotive, a Korean fighter jet and Civil War-era cannons.

Explore Nashville’s history at Belle Meade Plantation

Around 20 minutes southwest of Nashville, Belle Meade Plantation is a Greek-Revival-style mansion dating back to the mid-19th century. Once a sprawling thoroughbred horse farm, it was owned by the Harding family, who became one of the largest slaveholders in Nashville.

On a guided tour of the plantation, you can learn what life was like here for both the wealthy owners and the slaves who worked the land and cared for the racehorses. Your guide, dressed in period costume, will lead you around the main house before you explore the grounds and visit the stables, dairy and carriage house. Visit American Civil War battle sites in Franklin

The city of Franklin is just a half-hour drive from Nashville. It was the site of one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles, which took place on 29th November 1864. Around 10,000 Confederate and Federal soldiers died in the clash, which happened on Franklin’s outskirts.

Today you can visit two sites that were caught in the midst of the battle. The Carter family house became the Federal army’s impromptu headquarters during the fighting, and the Carnton Plantation played refuge and hospital to hundreds of wounded Confederate soldiers.

Touring these restored sites with a guide, you’ll hear about the events leading up to the battle and the roles the house and plantation played. You can also explore the grounds and outbuildings of both sites.

Best time to visit Nashville

Between April and May and September and October, the warm weather brings out the best of Nashville, with various festivals taking place. These months do therefore attract the most visitors, so expect attractions to be busier. Between June and August the city becomes very hot and humid, which can feel uncomfortable. Meanwhile, winter months (December and January) can get quite cold, with snow a possibility.

Events, festivals and seasonal reasons to visit

  • The Antiques & Garden Show takes place over three days each February. The largest of its kind in the US, it combines horticultural items, antique pieces and standout gardens, with experts and lecturers on-hand to share their knowledge.
  • Taking place over four days in June, the CMA Music Festival sees more than 400 artists perform over 70 hours of musical sets, sign autographs and take part in celebrity sports competitions.
  • Also in June, the Jefferson Street Jazz & Blues Festival is a two-day event celebrating the street’s vibrant community through arts, music and food. Local jazz and blues artists put on live performances, and local food vendors sell their wares.
  • September sees the Music City Food + Wine Festival take place over a weekend. Celebrity chefs from around the USA join local chefs, and wine and beverage makers to take part in panel discussions and demonstrations and to sample their latest culinary delights.
