A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Early 90s Trek 5200 weight and price?

  • Add to quote

Hi guys, I am possibly going to pick up an early 90s Trek 5200 for $350. Is this a good deal? Keep in mind that one shifter needs to be replaced. Also, does anyone have the weight specs on this bike, or has weighed this bike before? Trying to gauge if this is a serious bike or not. I'm new to the cycling world so excuse any ignorance lol. Thanks in advance

trek 5200 road bike price

The first thing I will ask you is did you ride it? How does it feel and fit? Personally I would pass - especially with a broken shifter. Bikes have become much better since the early 90's and it is unlikely you will be able to find a replacement shifter. Newer shifters aren't compatible with older drivetrains.

I owned a 5500 (same bike the Postal Service Team rode at the time) that had Dura-Ace components so it was a very light bike for it's time and the frame would still be considered pretty light by today's standards, 5200 is only slightly heavier. It's easy to find a shifter, lot's of them laying around in the backs of bike shops. The only downside to a bike, the handling will feel pretty sloppy compared to a much newer frameset.

I had a 5200, it's ok bike to ride, not as nice as a current model (thru axle forks make a world of difference at break neck speed), but those are hard to find. I bought a lot of shifters on Ebay, never had a problem. Find out how many speeds it is, and go ebay and look. I may have one in my garage. Mine was Ultegra I think, but you can use Ult, Durace, and a few others without any issue, if you can't find one, you can always put a wolftooth on it.

Its almost a 30 year old bike -- so keep that in mind. The only difference between the top of the line 5500 and the lower end 5200 were components (Dura Ace versus Ultegra). If its in decent shape and fits you, $350 isn't that much. But be careful, you might have to put a lot more money into it. You can find used 8-speed or 9-speed shifters on ebay (I'm guessing its 9-speed Ultegra). I think the Claris group is still 8-speed. But then you probably have to put new cables on -- which I assume you'll pay a bike shop to do. Then what about the tires? Is the chain and cassette worn out? A $350 bike could turn into a $1000 bike.

trek 5200 road bike price

^All this. $350 is a good deal if it's road-ready, with no surprises/deferred maintenance/etc. But a thirty-year-old bicycle, even a nice model like a 5200, probably has both. Then, there are the little but maddening things, such as tiny little alloy bits one didn't realize were corroded that badly until they need to be worked on, and are now scarce as hen's teeth to replace anyway.

trek 5200 road bike price

I bought a used road bike that was 10 years old for $300 in 2000 or so. Which was a lot for a used bike of that level then. Why did I chose it? It was from a shop, all the bearings had been repacked, completely tuned up, new tires. And the rims were anodized. The front rim had ZERO wear, the rear rim barely had any wear. It had eyelets for a rack, and I planned to use it for the commute. So a lightly ridden bike that I could ride for a long time with zero put into it. That was worth $300 to me at the time. Could I have found another bike for $100 less, maybe. $100 versus the search time and the wait time, not worth it. And that is how I think people should think about these kinds of bikes. Is it worth that to me? I rode that $300 bike into the ground. Just about everything on it needs replacing, so it was WAY worth it to me. --- As for the current bike, I would not buy without a close inspection at any price. Did the broken shifter break from a fall, or something else? A fall/crash might have messed other things up that are less apparent. -- And to the OP. Pretty much any bike that is in good shape will let you ride for a year and see if you are really into it (not sure how new you are to cycling, btw). Buy something better after that. You want something in your budget, that is in good shape, that fits your body. There are a lot of used bikes out there, but a lot have changed hands in the last year. But many people will quit cycling this year, many will upgrade and sell their old bikes. Ask at bike shops for used bikes, check for college students selling bikes to pay bills if yuu have a local college, see if there are bikes at garage sales, stuff like that. The right bike will turn up, and you will probably know it is right the moment you start to ride it on a test ride.

I had one and it was a good bike for the time, but it's thirty years old and would need a very very detailed inspection by a qualified mechanic. A couple of things you should be concerned with right off the bat are gearing and tires/wheels. It's probably has a 39/53 crank, that may be too much gear for a new rider. Can you find a compact gearing for that age bike? I think I was running 19mm tires back then, these days most are using wider tires and rims. Can that bike handle wider wheels and tires? Can you find replacement components? Just things to consider.

"There are a lot of used bikes out there, but a lot have changed hands in the last year. But many people will quit cycling this year, many will upgrade and sell their old bikes." I don't think this is true by a long shot. My LBS is half empty. They tell me that everything is back ordered. They can't get any inventory, and the bikes they do get in sell almost immediately. And this is a local chain of 5-6 stores. One of the mechanics there said they have over a dozen titanium frames people have brought in to get built up, but they can't get components. I recently replaced the Shimano cables on my wife's bike, and it took some looking to find a set. If that Trek 5200 is in decent shape and fits the OP, $350 may well be a bargain. I remember when a bike under 20 lbs was gee whiz light. PLUS ... its a small investment to see if road biking is your thing. If it is, you'll be lusting after some $6000 vunder bike by this time next year. If its not, no big loss. There's plenty of vunder bikes with 1000 miles on them wasting away in a garage gathering dust.

Compact cranks did not exist back then. And a triple was embarrassing. How did we do it back in the olden days? I rode a 52-42 with a 12-23 cassette. For the really hilly stuff, I'd put a 39 tooth small ring and a 12-27 cassette. I bought a 38 tooth ring when I did Ride the Rockies. It didn't make much difference. I do like compact cranks. I have them on 4 of my 5 bikes. But its not something I'd consider changing out on a $350 used bike.

I have a 5500 which still rides nice. I used down tube shifters which I got off the bay. If your interested let me know and I’ll detail all I’ve done with my 5500. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

NCM Milano Electric Bike Review

NCM make high-quality, but affordable electric bikes, in this review I will explain why I believe the NCM Milano is the best electric commuter bike for the money.

About NCM Electric bikes

NCM electric bikes are owned by Leon Cycle GmbH a German company based in Hanover. Their e-bikes are designed in Germany and manufactured in China.

Specification

The centrepiece of this Electric bike is the X15 geared rear hub motor: This reliable 250W rear electric motor is known for its durability and high torque output, enabling the rider to maintain 15.5mph for long periods. There is no compromise in handling with the small motor centred in the rear hub.

NCM Milano electric bike photos of saddle, rear wheel and handlebar grips

48v13ah Lithium battery pack with USB charging port for mobile devices: Bulky battery packs take up a considerable amount of space, but the Milano’s battery is integrated into the down tube of the bike, keeping the weight low and central, which helps to improve stability. The manufacturers claimed a maximum range of 75 miles seems a little optimistic. The total battery energy capacity is 624wh (watt hours), so if you were consuming 20wh per mile, your range would be 31 miles. My friend owns one of these bikes and gets an average range of around 40-50 miles.

NCM milano electric bike view of battery

This bike is built for comfort:  The Schwalbe touring tyres, Suntour front suspension, adjustable handlebar stem, Selle Royal ergonomic grips and saddle with suspension post all make for an incredibly comfortable ride, even over longer distances. The Shimano 7-Speed gears, index perfectly – shifting is crisp and precise.

photos of the ncm milano tyres, display panel and front light

Fully functional control panel display: The Das-Kit LCD gives you all the information you would expect from an e-bike display. including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your ride.

NCM Milano electric bike lcd display

Excellent build quality: The NCM Milano is designed to look great but with no compromise on functionality and safety. The Tektro mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide adequate braking and the brake levers incorporate motor cut-off switches to ensure safe riding. The front and rear lights work off the battery and provide an extra level of safety – especially when riding in the winter. Internal cable routing finishes off the package neatly and not only looks great but protects the cables from the elements.

NCM milano electric bike dimensions

In my opinion, the NCM Milano electric bike offers exceptional value for money. It is unusual to see such a high-quality, well-made e-bike at this price point. What’s more the specification is excellent. The 48v13ah battery will certainly provide users with a realistic range of between 30-45 miles, or 31 miles using the 20wh per mile calculation. The claimed range of 75 miles may be a little optimistic for everyday use – it depends on how much you use the electric assist.

Tektro Mechanical disc brakes should provide adequate stopping power, while the Schwalbe tyres will provide a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

The attention to detail on this bike is great. The internally routed cables and the integrated battery pack make for a very clean finish, something you only usually find on more expensive e-bikes.

The fact that this bike has mudguards, a pannier rack, lights and a kickstand fitted, means that it is excellent for the daily commute in all weathers, or perfect for some weekend touring. The inclusion of a gel saddle and suspension seat post make this bike a truly comfortable and versatile all-rounder.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this definitely ticks all the right boxes

A friend of mine purchased one of these back in the Summer and he was kind enough to let me take it for a spin. I can honestly say it was a revelation! The gel saddle was incredibly comfortable and the small X15 hub motor was quiet and smooth. It produced a lot of power for such a small motor, making climbing the steep Cornish hills a doddle! The brakes and front suspension were more than adequate for the back lanes of Cornwall.

I really cannot recommend this bike enough. It has to be one of the best value e-bikes on the market at the moment, and the specification is great.

The great thing about this e-bike is that it is a true hybrid – it is equally comfortable being ridden on tarmac or unpaved surfaces. It can even be used for some light off-road riding.

If you are in the market for an incredibly versatile and affordable e-bike this ticks all the right boxes.

Incidentally, NCM’s other 48v 250w bike is called the NCM Moscow , I will be reviewing this bike shortly. I have personally worked on and ridden a Moscow, and it is on par with the Milano for the ride and builds quality. It uses identical electric components but in a mountain bike-style frame.

boa taarde tenho uma biçicleta destas mas necessito de assistencia em Portugal. ela não arranca e não encontro uma ofecina que repare esta marca e com a garantia

Hi! Thank you for the review! I bought Milano a week ago, so far so good. I found the first assist speed to be stronger that I’d like it to be. Is there any way to rebalance those 1-6 modes within the given range, so it starts not as strong?

Don’t know if this is still open, but I really like the Milano plus, my only question, is how easy is it to remove the battery beneath that tube? Can it be done one handed? Cornwall my home!

Turning the key releases the battery catch, then you need to lift it slightly, move it forward and remove. I would imagine it’s possible to do it one handed, but it would be fairly tricky as the battery weighs around 3kg.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards, Tony

bike seems well make and sturdy but i find the tyres are so skinny that when you are on slightly uneven surfaces even at a slow pace & i’m talking in number 1 setting it is dangerous and you could so easy fall off on a slightly uneven footpath. It’s ok on even ground but i wouldn’t let my wife ride it. I’ll try putting new tyres on it & see how it goes or it will be sold. In comparison i have another basic ebike in the states which is so stable this is nowhere close to and ride all types of tracks on it which is also a similar style. i would say I’m disappointed in it so far & feel its an accident waiting to happen.

Excellent review Tony,

I went ahead and bought the Milano and I’ve been very impressed with it so far. I was wondering if you’d know whether the 48v 16ah battery for NCM bikes would be compatible with the Milano model? I can’t seem to find a 48v 13ah battery anywhere.

Many thanks, Andy

An NCM Milano Plus battery should fit straight in. The 16Ah battery is the same size and uses lithium cells with a higher energy density.

Salutations, Tony

I am seeing two different Milano Max models…N8C and N8R. They look exactly the same and with the same specifications. What is the difference?

I checked online for milano and price was 1189 Canadian dollar. On Monday I decided to buy it but unfortunately price went up to 1359$. I’m surprised as during holiday season everywhere else reducing their prices but your price was raised.

This bike is able to do more than I am capable of asking of it. And in comfort as well.

Got caught in rain; took a while to dry it out but have no problems from it.

I like this machine very much and at my level of riding it is all the bike I will ever need. I just finished a 100K club ride, my first of the season, and I was totaly comfortable. Very smooth and agile without being twitchy. The only changes from stock are a Selle Italia gel-flow sadle and Michelin Pro-race tires. There are 2,327km on it since it was purchased and no problems except the up shift on the front derailure could be crisper. I like the look of the 2003 paint and grafix. No problems with paint or decals. (it's a 2003 bought two years ago)

My first high-end road bike and I love it.

Great Frame, good components. Great for long rides.

I now ride a 2005 Trek Madone 5.9 SL for training now, but I have to say I still love my 2003 5200. I have put over 8000 miles on it and it is awesome!!! The OCLV 120 rides like a dream(very smooth). For longer rides I usually ride this bike over my 5.9 SL(the 120 rides smoother than the 110 OCLV) I would recommend this bike to any one who wants a really nice bike, but dont want to break the bank. I see more riders riding these bikes than any other. HIGHLY RECOMMEDED!!!!!

2005 Trek Madone 5.9 SL

Smooth ride

Ultegra Front Derailleur

2006 Trek 5200 - Great Bike! - same geometry and frame material as Madone 5.2. I Love this bike. I rode a Specialized Allez Sport and feel the improvement in feel and quality. Only complaint is the Ultegra Front Derailleur which is not as responsive as I would have expected.

Design, engineering, components, all work perfectly, very well balanced.

I just purchased my first road bike and all I can say is WOW!! I have been on a mountain bike for years, but the smoothness, quality, and feel of my 2006 OCLV 5200 is simply amazing. Components shift quickly and precisely. I consider it the Porsche of road bikes. Fast and corners exceptionally!! No vibration or feedback from the road, say goodbye to numbness, the carbon frame soaks up everything. Saddle is excellent. Trek has delivered yet again, this model is a work of ART!!

Trek Mountain Bike

Great bike for the money

Swap parts out from my other bike, Dura ace shifter, ulterga everything else.Great bike, rode it for 200 miles the first 2 weeks, great handling for the price you can't beat it. I am thinkng about the madone next year

KHS flight2000,santa cruz roadster

Frame - light, stiff, inspiring

the Ultegra front deraileur shifter - total garbage

Frame: absolutely top level, light, responsive, and with a great capacity to absorb road vibrations. The Ultegra groupset: OK with one notable exception: the front deraileur shifter. It was impossible to adjust it so that it would not force the chain off the rings when downshifting once in a while. If that happens in a race at the foot of a climb and then you have to chase back... I switched to Campagnolo Chorus, and Ridley 4ZA compact crankset, and never looked back. Bontrager wheels: reasonably light and stiff. After three years of use, still no complaints.

custom steel frame equipped with Campagnolo Record

Climbs great, shifts smooth, and corners well. I love the feel of the carbon frame. At first it feels kind of dead after being used to an aluminum frame but after about an hour ridding it I would never go back. This bike is simply a joy to ride.

Price: It seems like a lot considering I can get the compenent group & all the other stuff for about $1000. That means I'm paying $1400 for a frame? I can't seem to get the front derailer adjusted right? Don't know if its me, the bike, or the derailer yet? Anyway right now the chain seems to fall off at least once or twice a ride. Maybe it has something to do with me not using the half shift thing on the 10 speed right? Seems like it should come with peddles? Stupid thing: I got the bike with reflectors on it (guess they have to send it out the door this way) and both broke off during various rides during my first month of riding.

The bike is actually an 06. I do not really need a bike this nice but the store only had a Madone in a 54 for me to test ride & and I fell in love with the ride. Not wanting to shell out 3k for the Madone I took the next best thing the 5200. The bike is really smooth to ride & climbs like a champ. Guess I should say my road experience is somewhat limited back in collage I did some bike events (delmac & ms150's) on my mountain bike decided I would try a road bike and got a deal on a Colnago Team bike that did not really fit me right as a result I hated it & went back to mountain biking. I decided to sign up for the MS150 again and decided it was time to try a road bike this year. I went in to buy something under 1k and ended up with this :). Lately I have been really enjoying being a roadie & I think I'm going to stick with it because of this bike! I still love trail riding but now I have a little variety!

I'll be honest I didn't shop, in the past Trek has not been a bad value. I went to the local bike store and they only carried two brands. Not wanting to drive all over town I just bought it. Colnago, Campy, and various mountain bikes.

Stiffness, cornering (really stable), comfort over bumps (felt like riding in my car), acceleration.

Seat was OK, but not great. Would change over to a carbon wing handlebar, as well. Stock one is comfortable, but nothing matches a good carbon wing.

Great ride at an affordable price. Had tested the Madone 5.2 and found this to be as comfortable and as stable in hard turns. This was actually a 2006 with the Ultegra 10-speed cassette. Shifts are sleek and smooth. Great hill climber and great acceleration away from a stop light. The stock seat is passable, but I will be switching over my Fizik Arione from my other ride. Was really surprised at the stiffness and comfort of this bike, especially for the price. Also test rode Cannondale (aluminum), Specialized (carbon), Scattante (carbon), Lemond (carbon), and Trek Madone 5.2. Only the 5.2 was comparable but at about $600 more.

Trek Madone 5.2, Cannondale 613, Lemond, Scattante (carbon), Specialized Roubaix.

Quick and responsive. I can bust out from a stop light to max speed in no time. Acceleration is scary. Downhill is too fast but fun. I can goto work in about double the time it takes to drive so saves on gas.

Uphill is not fun with Shimano R-540s (1900+ grams) but I'll put a stop to that soon. People get mad when I pass them.

This bike is all about acceleration even with my weighty wheels. At 6'2" I may be too tall for this 58cm frame, but I have nothing to compare it to, so..seems to work fine. Also, this is 2 casset and I ride on mountainous rodes so in desperate need of new wheels to get in a good ratio. This bike explodes from a stand-still and is very smooth while riding. I'm glade that I didn't get a Specialized Roubauix whatever as I don't think it would explode like this Trek 5200 does. With the right seat it is also every bit as comfortable. I switch out the hard-as-a-rock one for my mountain bike Serfas Doctor's RX seat. Yeah it's heavier but it allows bloodflow to reach the legs and prevents prostate cancer. I need a new headset too - forthcoming. I went for this bike because the Madone is only 100 grams lighter and is rather hard to come by..and costs about $2k more. I'm not a weight weenie, just a proud owner of the 5200, which more than holds it's own on the road. You have the ability to turn up the juice on this bike from brain to foot to asphalt.

Very lite and responsive. Stock setup is very good and fits like a glove. My seat pack is heavier than any single component on the bike.

Bontrager tires were very lite, but experienced 2 flats in 200 miles. Switched to Michelin Pro Race and haven't looked back.

I'm 6'3" tall and 180lbs. When I went to purchase a new road bike, I had 2 choices; one LeMond and the Trek 5200. After taking a test ride on the Trek, I was sold. This bike wants to do one thing: Go FAST! This bike makes no noise except hum (and I'm not kidding, it really hums when you're riding). The 60cm frame fit me like a glove. The only required adjustment was to move the seat back 2mm. I have had no complaints with the stock setup. I find that the frame is stiff and responsive. It corners like it's glued to the road, and climbs like a goat. Every watt I input, gets transferred to going forward. The only problem I've had is that I have to ride my brake when going downhill in a group. As far as the decals go, I personally like them. I think it adds to the race worthiness of the bike. I have been so happy with the Bontrager wheelset, that I'm seriously thinking about purchasing the Race X Lite Aero.
