20+ Road Trip Boredom Busters: Games and Activities

Tired of hearing, “ Are we there yet ?”

If so, read on for some road trip boredom busters !

Embarking on a road trip can be an exhilarating adventure, but hours on end in a car might sometimes lead to restlessness and boredom.

To keep spirits high and energy flowing, I've discovered a variety of strategies to make even the longest stretches of highway more enjoyable.

Whether I'm traveling solo or with companions, these boredom busters have become essential to my road trip experience, ensuring that the journey is just as exciting as the destination.

From curating the perfect playlist to engage everyone's musical tastes to playing classic road trip games that prompt laughter and friendly competition, I've learned that staying entertained on the road is key to a memorable trip.

Packing engaging activities or planning spontaneous stops along the route can transform monotonous drives into a series of fun and unexpected adventures.

Through trial and error, I've fine-tuned these activities to strike a balance between fun and feasibility, making sure they enhance the road trip without becoming a distraction for the driver.

Beyond packing road trip boredom buster activities it is also important to recall key items pertaining to road trip safety .

Road Trip Boredom Busters Entertainment

When I hit the road with my family, making sure we're all entertained is a top priority. From a classic road trip game that you've probably played before to new, fresh ideas, here are a few games to ensure an enjoyable journey for everyone.

Travel Games

There are so many fun long drive travel games to consider!  Here is a list of a few!

1. License Plate Bingo Create bingo cards before leaving for your trip. Each square is filled with a different state's license plate. Along the route, look for different plates and mark them off – the first to get five in a row wins!

2. I Spy Nothing beats the classic game of I Spy for younger passengers. Pick out something everyone can see and say, “I spy with my little eye,” and then the item you see. Everyone takes turns guessing what it might be.

3. 20 Questions Think of an object, and have the whole family ask yes-or-no questions to guess what it is. It's a fantastic way to keep your mind sharp as the miles roll by.

4. Story Chain Take turns adding sentences to a story. Start with a simple sentence, and each family member builds on it. It often ends up creating hilarious and wild tales.

5. Rock, Paper, Scissors

It's a classic game where everyone counts to three and shows one of three shapes with an outstretched hand.

The possible shapes are rock (a closed fist), paper (an open hand), and scissors (a fist with the index and middle fingers extended, forming a V).

The winner is determined by the following rules:

  • Rock crushes scissors
  • Scissors cut paper
  • Paper covers rock

If both players choose the same shape, the game is tied and is usually immediately played again.

6. Spot  the Cars

Choose a specific type or color of the vehicle before you start. Players score points by being the first to spot their chosen vehicle. It's a fun way to stay observant on the road.

7. The Sing-Along Challenge

Start singing a song, and others join in or try to guess the song. Rotate turns, and the next person starts a new song. Great for music lovers and keeping spirits high.

8. The Restaurant Race

Players guess the next restaurant or fast food place you'll pass by. Points are awarded for correct guesses. It's a playful way to anticipate upcoming stops.

9. Guess the Distance

Estimate the distance to a landmark or destination. The closest guess wins. This game encourages attention to the journey and the landscape.

10. Cloud Storytelling

Look at the clouds and take turns creating stories or shapes out of them. This game sparks creativity and offers a relaxing way to enjoy the sky.

11.  Mad Libs

This fill-in-the-blank game gets everyone laughing. One person picks a story template, while the others provide words for the blanks, no peeking until the end. The result is often a nonsensical and hilarious story that we can't get enough of.

12. Guess the Song Lyrics

One person recites lyrics from a song, and others guess the song and artist. Perfect for testing your musical knowledge.

13. The Movie Game

Name a movie, and the next person must name an actor from it. The following person names a different movie that the actor was in, and so on. Great for movie buffs.

14. Passenger DJ

Take turns being the ‘DJ', playing songs of your choice. Others rate each song, and the highest-rated playlist wins. It is a musical way to share and discover new tunes.

15. State Capital Quiz

Challenge each other to name the capitals of as many states as possible. It is educational and a great mental exercise.

16. Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of items to spot on the road, like specific road signs, landmarks, or types of vehicles.

17. The Alphabet Game

Spot words starting with each letter of the alphabet, in order, on signs, license plates, or nearby objects.

18. Name That Song

Play the first few seconds of a song, and others have to guess the song title and artist.

19. Would You Rather

Engage in playful dilemmas with “Would You Rather,” where passengers choose between two scenarios. This game sparks conversation and laughter, revealing preferences and imaginative ideas.

20. Animal Spotting

A simple yet engaging game for the family. Choose an animal (e.g., cows, horses, birds) at the start of the trip. Passengers compete to spot these animals along the way.

Integrating these activities into our family car journeys helps ensure that we all have fun, and it's a great way to pass the time. It's not just about reaching our destination; it's about enjoying the ride there.

Travel Activities for Young Children

When traveling with little kids, it's essential to have a mix of engaging activities that cater to their energy and creativity. Here are some tried-and-true travel activities that keep the young kids happily occupied on a long road trip.

Arts and Crafts

Head to your local Dollar Store to purchase some items to keep the little hands busy on your next family road trip. Here is a list of supplies to consider:

  • Sketch pads
  • Washable markers
  • Washable window markers
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Popsicle sticks

Encourage children to create their own vacation journals or craft postcards to send to friends. They can draw what they see out the window or use stickers to represent different landmarks.

Simplicity is key for crafts in the car; the focus is on mess-free or easy-to-clean materials.

Tip:  Consider a backseat organizer to keep things within reach!

Imaginative Play

Invite your little ones to pick out some small toys to bring along on the trip. Or maybe pick a few and stash them in the glove compartment or center console and pull them out when the complaining starts!  Some ideas include:

  • Action figures/dolls
  • Hand puppets

Small toys and figures are perfect for fostering imaginative play. Kids can create stories and scenarios related to the trip or invent totally new ones, all from their seat.

As a bonus, imaginative play can continue outside of the vehicle during a rest stop. Be sure to plan rest stops – it is important to note when the driver needs a break, not just the passengers!

Travel Activities for Older Children

Keeping older children engaged on a road trip can be challenging, but with the right mix of audio entertainment and creative outlets, the journey is just as fun as the destination.

Audiobooks and Podcasts

Load up a device (cell phone or tablet) with a selection of audiobooks and podcasts that cater to children's interests.

For variety, consider a mix of genres —  fiction, mystery, science, and history  — to spark imagination and curiosity. It's like having a storyteller right in the car, transforming hours into minutes.

  • Fiction  can be a thrilling escape with popular young adult novels.
  • Mystery  hones their problem-solving skills as they unravel plot twists.
  • Science and History  podcasts educate while entertaining, perfect for curating an inquisitive mind.

Travel Journals

Encouraging older kids to document our journey in a travel journal not only keeps them busy but also nurtures their writing and artistic skills.

This also helps to reduce smart phone screen time! Here are a few ideas on how to make it engaging:

  • At each stop, they jot down their observations or sketch a scene.
  • They collect mementos like tickets or brochures to glue into their journal.
  • Encourage a mix of writing styles: bullet points, poems, or short stories.

Travel Activities for All Ages

I love to read while my husband is driving!  Even on a short road trip from  Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam , I was able to finish a few chapters.

Books and Reading

Head to your local library to pick up some books to take along on your next road trip. Perhaps search for some material that aligns with where you are headed!

Books are a timeless way to engage all ages during a road trip. Picture and interactive books can captivate younger kids, while older children might enjoy chapter books or novels.

Reading can be a calming activity, perfect for quieter moments of the journey.

Final Thoughts: Road Trip Boredom Busters

There are so many great boredom busters to consider, and I'm sure there are a ton more ideas that you can think of that I didn't mention. Just keep in mind that a little planning is key to a successful trip.

Bringing along a few fun activities on long car journeys creates a family trip that is less stressful for everyone.

Whether it's through imaginative play with toys, fun educational games, the immersive world of books, or other engaging games, these activities are more than just ways to pass the time.

They're opportunities to create lasting memories, spark creativity, and keep the spirit of adventure alive in young travelers.

Pack up these ideas along with your essentials, and set off on a journey that's enjoyable for everyone in the car.

FAQ's: Road Trip Boredom Busters

In this section, I'll share answers to common questions about banishing boredom during road trips with some fun games, activities, and must-have items to keep everyone entertained.

What are some entertaining road trip games for adults to play in the car?

I find that trivia games are a hit among adults, especially when you tailor the questions to the interests of those in the car.

Another classic game is “Would You Rather?” where players choose between two challenging scenarios, sparking interesting conversations.

What are creative ways to stay entertained on a long car ride without electronics?

I recommend bringing along a travel journal to document your journey. Capturing sights and experiences in writing or sketches engages not just your hands but also your creative mind.

One of my personal favorite games is the license plate hunt! We spotted license plates from all 50 states while on a trip in the Washington D.C. area! This game keeps riders observant and engaged with their surroundings.

How can you keep yourself amused when taking a road trip alone?

For solo trips, I love to create a road trip playlist loaded with my favorite tunes and sing along to keep my energy up.

Audiobooks are also a fantastic way to entertain myself; they can turn hours of driving into an immersive storytelling experience.

What are some fun activities for families to enjoy together during a long car ride?

Families can enjoy “I Spy” for younger kids or “20 Questions” to keep everyone's minds active. Additionally, collaborative storytelling, where each person adds a new sentence, exercises creativity and can lead to a lot of laughter.

Can you suggest some must-have items to bring on a road trip for entertainment?

Don't forget a mix of card games like UNO or regular playing cards—they're versatile and don't require a lot of space. A portable travel game set can be convenient as it often includes various game options like checkers, chess, and more, catering to different preferences.

Also, these types of games are great for spending some time when you are stuck in your hotel room or RV.

Ordered take out here based on TA Recommendations and were very glad we did. Extremely good cubano sandwich, extremely good brisket with some peppers that really addedI), and good chicken "fritters" - something like chicken tenders. Lots of options on the chicken fritters. Fairly large... menu. We had trouble deciding about the various options. Staff brought food to us as we waited in the car. You need to call ahead and give them a credit card number. We'll definitely be back. More

Excellent food, nice vibe, average for price. A lot of choices for food. Every time we have been there and it’s been many over the years, the food is always exceptional. Great selection of beers. Staff could certainly be more friendly and observant. Our dish... was ready and our waitress was on her phone for some time. I took it upon myself to get the food. The waitress was not happy about that, but we didn’t want cold food. She could have redeemed herself by apologizing, but she did not. A lot could be improved by the wait staff acting like they liked their job. Even if they don’t. It was not busy, there were 3 tables, so it’s not like she was rushing around. We can overlook that as the food is worth the surly attitude. We would happily give it a 5 as the food is fantastic and the beer selection is as well. More

Last year I took my parents and grandmother here for brunch. It was delicious and affordable. So good my parents still rave about it. This past Saturday, I took my niece and her husband there. Once again, the food was delicious, service friendly, and reasonable.... We were all pleased at a great experience. More

If your looking for a good choice for a Friday evening, "end of the week", dinner spot Buster's is just the place. With a great assortment of beer, interesting and well prepared sandwiches and other pub fare there surly is a good choice for even... the most picky eater. Good friendly service and plenty of people watching also makes this pub a good choice. More

A favorite, easy date night place for hubby and I. Close by, good beer for him, good eats, I love the ambience of the place!

We went to Buster's to have a few beers and some food on our way to the Timberwolves game. Based on a recommendation from a friend who lives in the area as well as a co-worker we ended up at Buster's as we are always... looking for something new. We arrived shortly after 6PM and had a 5 minute wait to be seated which was fine as it was dinner time on a Saturday. Our server Nina promptly came to get our drink order and see if we had any question about the menu. After receiving our drinks Nina returned and took our order in which we had a question on which mussels to order. She stated that they were both good but she preferred the Curry/Chorizo mussels. Curry/Chorizo? Right? So we took her advice and boy was she right! The have a very large beer selection and many great food options. We ordered the Curry/Chorizo mussels, Bavarian pretzels and the Brisket flatbread pizza. The Curry/Chorizo mussels were probably some of the best mussels that I have ever had and the quality and quantity were excellent. For the record I have had mussels on all 3 coasts as well as abroad so this isn't my first rodeo with mussels. The Bavarian pretzels were good and came with a fair amount of melted cheese for dipping. The finale was the Brisket flatbread pizza as they take longer to cook. It comes with a good amount of brisket, cheese and other toppings along with small cut pieces of avocado on top after it has been baked. It was mind blowing on how delicious and well balanced it was. If you don't care for avocado don't be afraid to order this, just remove them or order it without. You won't regret it. I also paid attention to the customers seated near us and everyone seemed very pleased with the food that they had ordered. They are known for their burgers(only 4 on their menu) and are recommended by Andrew Zimmern as one of the most underrated burgers in the twin cities. I am a foodie that has a list of places all around the world and this place has earned a spot as a new go to. I highly recommend Busters and the items we ordered, we will definitely be back. More

Buster's reopened this week after a long renovation following a fire. The service was excellent, our waitress was attentive and alert. She answered our questions and took our orders. Side note: I prefer my burgers well done. If they are burnt, I will NOT complain.... I explained this to our waitress and asked for my burger to be prepared, "well done." It came back so rare that I would not eat it. The restaurant was very busy being Friday evening and lots of thirsty and hungry customers to attend to. She could not come back for a while, by which time I was not interested in asking her to take it back. When I had an opportunity to tell her that I was not happy with the burger, she apologized and graciously removed the charge from my bill. It was clearly not her fault. However, now it is doubtful that I will ever return. Sad because I live several blocks away and would be happy to be a regular there. More

the burgers are not cooked well very pink yuk,the waitress with the long black hair works there alot is rude and does not care about good customers service.I dont recommend this place expensive to.

But I ordered the steak sandwich. It was ok, but the steak was cut more in cubes than sliced, and the bun fell apart, making it difficult to eat. Fries were excellent.

Buster’s has won us over with consistently great service and tasty food! We’ve been here for lunch and dinner weekdays and weekends over the past year and have never been disappointed. My spouse and friends enjoy their beer selection and beef burgers and I like... their veggie burger and sweet potato fries. Their pulled pork sandwich is also a winner. More

Pleasantly surprised with what a great breakfast we had here. Simple but excellent. Reasonable prices. Very friendly service. Asked for our hash browns extra crispy and the cook obliged and they were excellent.

Buster’s on 28th is hidden next to Lake Hiawatha. I loved their craft beer selection. Their Buster’s Burger was delicious and the service was outstanding. No need to order dessert with a bakery next door. They have outdoor seating, indoor and bar seating. Don’t miss... visiting this hidden gem. More

The BLT is killer. Going forward - all BLT’s will be held in judgment versus this one. Slabs of bacon, crunchy iceberg lettuce, fresh tomatoes - bread was flat topped grilled. Killer fries. Will be back.

Start with the warm potato chips and homemade French onion dip. It's a generous portion -- enough for six. The small spinach salad with calamari was wonderful, as were the muscles and bar b que. we never would have discovered this without Trip Advisor. Off... the beaten path and worth it. More

We ordered delivery from Bite Squad from Busters. We ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy, Steak Sandwich, onion rings and Death to Caesar Salads. The salads were filled with crisp lettuce, crunchy prosciutto, a soft boiled egg and a delicious dressing. The egg yolk blended wonderfully with... the dressing. The shrimp was plentiful on the Po'Boy, crunchy and full of flavor. The 10K Lake Sauce is like a spicy remoulade and chopped jalapenos on the side. The bread was soft yet chewy. The steak sandwich was cooked perfectly and the blue cheese with the caramelized onions were an ideal topping. The Onion Rings were big, thick slices of onions fried to a yummy goodness. The mustard dipping sauce was pretty good too. Since we ordered delivery I can't comment on the actual restaurant interior but am thinking we need to check it out soon! We would definitely order the same foods again unless we get convinced to try something new! More

Buster's trip

  • View history

In the Season 2 episode " Arthur's Faraway Friend ," Buster leaves Elwood City to travel with his dad . He does not return until the beginning of Season 3 .

  • 1 Buster leaves town
  • 2 While Buster is gone
  • 3 Buster returns

Buster leaves town [ ]

Because Buster's parents are divorced, he never really gets to spend a lot of time with his father. When Buster's dad, a pilot, invites Buster to travel with him for a couple of months, Buster initially does not want to go, as he will miss all his friends, but eventually decides he does want to go as it means that he will get to spend some quality time with his dad, as well as see the world.

Aff

Arthur saying goodbye to Buster as he drives away.

When Buster receives the invitation to go on the trip, he and Arthur are preparing to write an exciting adventure book, and with Buster out of town it will mean that they will not be able to work on the story. Fortunately, Buster sends Arthur a list of the places he is going so they can get letters to each other, and are able to send each other the chapters. Arthur decides to use Buster's traveling to their advantage, as they can feature all the places Buster is going in the story.

At first Arthur is very sad that Buster is leaving, but he eventually is okay with it. Nonetheless, he eagerly looks forward to when Buster returns home.

While Buster is gone [ ]

A number of events happen in Elwood City while Buster is away. Arthur becomes a champion of the trivia game "No Guessing" (though he actually cheats) , Muffy hosts a party at Waterworld and a carnival in her backyard and later launches a line of cookies with the help of friends . Arthur, Brain , and Binky find a mysterious key , and a scary new crossing guard is hired at Lakewood Elementary .

Arthur keeps Buster informed of all the goings-on in Elwood City through letters. He even thanks Buster for his advice in order to overcome his cheating problem, even though Buster never actually gave him advice -- it was just Arthur's recollection of Buster's personality.

Buster returns [ ]

Eventually, Buster's mom calls Arthur to inform him that Buster will be coming home later that day . Arthur is very excited at first, but when D.W. told tells Arthur that Buster might not want to be Arthur's friend anymore after his exciting world travels, Arthur grows very worried. Fortunately, Buster has not changed at all during the time he is gone, and is eagerly looking forward to playing a game of checkers with Arthur, just like old times.

However, Buster begins to feel left out once he learns about all the things that happened while he was away . Arthur and his friends throw a party for him and watch his travel slides, and Buster is glad they all still want to be his friend.

  • Apparently, when Buster returns to town, he unknowingly brings Art Garfunkel with him. A possible explanation is that Buster's dad was Garfunkel's pilot while he performed international concert tours.
  • Buster would later go on another trip with his dad in " Postcards from Buster ," though this time Arthur and his family went with him. This later inspired the spin-off series Postcards from Buster .
  • In the song " The Ballad of Buster Baxter ," there is a line "We thought he left the show." This could possibly be in response to worried viewers who had written to the show wanting to know if Buster was ever going to come back.
