A practical guide to planning the perfect day trip

Get your fill of adventure and exploration—no overnight stay required

By Archana Ram

There’s a lot to love about the open road: fresh air, incredible sights, connecting with people in a new place. But sometimes life gets in the way, be it a lack of vacation days or kids waiting for you at home. That’s why we love day trips. It packs that sense of wanderlust into a neatly edited one-day excursion. You don’t have to lug a carry-on or figure out how you’ll fit your backpacks, cooler, tent, and sleeping bags into the car.

But just because it’s a single day doesn’t mean some planning isn’t required. With a little foresight, you can make the very most out of a 24-hour getaway, from packing the right provisions to loading your phone with helpful apps. Here’s what you need to know:

How to plan

Consider budget. Cost factors into everything, from where you’ll go to which restaurants you’ll eat at to permits you’ll need to enter national parks. Deciding in advance how much you want to spend—especially when traveling with a group—can help make decisions on where to go and what to buy that much easier. And keep in mind some places (i.e. museums, hot springs, etc.) offer discounts for locals.

Pick your theme. Before you get to the “where,” think about the “what.” Maybe it’s making stops along Route 66 , hiking forest trails, or exploring eerie old resorts. Whatever the theme, stick to one or two to avoid a watered down itinerary. Then, once you’ve got your themes figured out, start making lists of all the top locales that align with them—ideally focusing on places no more than three hours away to maximize trip time.

Winding mountain roads can lead to amazing scenic views

Limit your areas. Some people fall into the trap of packing too much into a day trip because it’s, well, a day trip. But there’s no point in returning home ragged after running around all over town. Once you’ve picked your destination, try to concentrate on two or three specific  areas. It’ll give you more time to hit the streets, trails, and coastlines, rather than spending all of your time in the car. Remember, it’s about connecting with the place, not getting a superficial scope of things. For example, instead of trying to traverse the whole stretch of Joshua Tree National Park —which can take several hours even without making any significant stops—pick a side, like the western portion, where you’ll find the titular trees (you’ll have extra time to scout the antique shops in town, too!).

What about weather? Do you like the blaring heat? What about getting rained on? These factors can help whittle down options for places and timing. But remember, if you don’t mind putting up with some less-than-perfect conditions, you could be rewarded with fewer crowds. But crowds aside, always be aware of weather conditions and safety.

Don't forget to factor in weather conditions

Examine your car. You want to make the most of your getaway without any car troubles sucking up precious time. Before hitting the road, take the time to ensure your car is armed with a full tank of gas, oil, jumper cables, and flat tire fixes—whether that’s a jack and spare or the number for roadside assistance. And if you’re driving in winter conditions, make sure you have the proper cold weather provisions .

Check schedules. Maybe you’re visiting a museum. Or touring an iconic landmark. If your attraction comes with a timetable, double check to make sure it’ll be open both the day and times you want to visit.

What to pack

Charger. Admit it—your phone is basically another appendage, and on a day trip you’ll likely use it for navigation, music, and finding places to stop. That all takes a lot of juice, so bring either a USB cable to charge within your car or a remote battery pack.

Phone mount. Looking down at the GPS while driving is dangerous. There are plenty of dashboard options out there, some of which even have wireless and solar charging capabilities.

Bring cash . Stash some dollar bills in your wallet and put that ATM fee toward your tip at a roadside diner or a unique find at an antique shop. Many local, mom-and-pop establishments don’t accept credit cards or any form of digital payment.

Flashlight. We know it’s a “day” trip, but should you have car trouble, drop your keys in the grass, or need to see exactly where to pick up the dog poop, you’ll be thankful you have a light at the end of the day. A headlamp is an even easier, allowing you to go hands-free.

On day trips, flashlights are key as the sun starts to set

Snacks. In case chips and cookies from the local service station don’t sound appealing, oranges, bananas, nuts, and peanut butter sandwiches hold up well. And if you pack enough food, you might even consider subbing those as a lunch-on-the-go so you can make time for other activities.

SPF. Whether it’s 80 degrees and sunny or sub-zero and snowing, if you’re outside, you should always think about protecting your skin. And if you plan to swim in the ocean, opt for a reef-friendly sunscreen .

Water. This can actually be an easy one to forget. Aim for at least one reusable bottle per person. (And don’t forget about the dog !)

You're not the only one who will need water on a long day trip

Cooler. Larger ones are ideal for beaches and parks. Cooler backpacks are a better idea if you plan to hike or bike.

Towels. They come in handy for everything from picnicking to hitting the beach to cleaning up after muddy treks.

When to ditch the plans

There’s merit in planning things ahead of time. It can mean less traffic, fewer disappointments if something is closed, and avoiding unnecessary purchases. But we all know that spontaneity is what makes a road trip truly memorable. So don’t be afraid to take that local’s recommendation or drive the scenic detour or spend your whole day in a place that was just supposed to be a pitstop. Those off-the-itinerary moments are what make hopping in a car and traveling to a new destination so fulfilling. You’re in control, so seize the day (trip).

47. Washington // Maury Island Marine Park

Location: Vashon Island, Washington

What's often referred to as the first UFO sighting in American history took place on the Maury Island Marine Park shore in 1947, and while the sighting remains unsubstantiated, an eerie, slightly spooky air continues to surround this uninhabited area. Even if you're not searching for UFOs, you’ll still enjoy the hiking and nature this quiet, remote land has to offer.

The 15 best day trips from Los Angeles

Experience everything that SoCal has to offer with these day trip from Los Angeles to stunning nearby beaches, wineries and small towns

Michael Juliano

L.A. is great and all, but sometimes you need a change of scenery. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations. Luckily, living in L.A. means it’s an easy (well, depending on traffic) and often  scenic drive  to SoCal’s best beaches , small towns, wineries and gorgeous desert landscapes—all within three hours of the city. Oddly enough, taking advantage of the ease with which you can get  out of L.A. is easily one of the best things to do  in L.A.

From wine tasting in Santa Barbara and  vintage hunting in Palm Springs to  camping  in Joshua Tree or feeling the sand between your toes in San Diego, you’re sure to find a short trip (as opposed to a longer road trip ) worth taking on this list.

Top day trips from Los Angeles

Coronado

1.  Coronado

2 hrs by car There’s a reason Coronado has topped lists of the country’s best beaches: Its wide shores never feel overcrowded, the soft, fine-grained sand is easily walkable and the weather is practically perfect. Just a quick ferry ride or bridge drive from San Diego, this wealthy peninsula has the feel of a resort town with the amenities that come from being near a major city.

The beachfront grounds of the regal, red-roofed Hotel del Coronado  are a must-visit, even if you can’t foot its pricey room reservations. Back in town, stop into hole-in-the-wall diner Clayton’s Coffee Shop for a quick meal or MooTime Creamery for frozen treats. Coronado is also home to a sizable naval base, and while you can’t exactly visit, you can spot fighter jets coming in for landings and submarines surfacing off the coast.  —Michael Juliano

Ojai

2.  Ojai

1 hr 20 mins by car Ojai is a not-so-hidden gem close enough to L.A. for a day trip, but with a unique, relaxed feel that’s worlds away from busy city life. Start early with a decadent, hearty breakfast at Bonnie Lu’s , then stroll the town’s quaint main street; the antique shopping is great here, but relatively new school shops like Summer Camp are also worth a stop.

Tour an olive farm or a citrus grove, then grab an organic lunch at Farmer & the Cook . Alternatively, grab a a bite to go and explore the nearby trails in Los Padres National Forest , just north of town. If the weather is right, swimming holes abound along the Sespe Creek.

Back in civilization, check out Bart’s Books , an outdoor bookstore housed in an actual house (sans roof), or head up to Meditation Mount   (reservations required)  for incredible views, especially the famed “pink moment” at sunset.

Swing back to the center of town to explore its many wine tasting rooms, or grab a beer and a bite at Ojai Beverage Company . Chief’s Peak, the bar at Ojai Rancho Inn (where you should stay if your trip runs long), is a hip spot for an after-dinner drink; you’ll find more old-timers—and regular live music—at Deer Lodge down the road.  —Kate Wertheimer

Santa Barbara

3.  Santa Barbara

1 hr 50 mins by car Santa Barbara is a scenic and worthy vacation destination regardless of your starting point, but we’re fortunate enough to have relatively easy access (granted that the L.A. traffic gods are working in our favor).

Stearns Wharf is a go-to spot to see the Pacific, and nearby is State Street, filled with tons of shops and people-watching opportunities. And the Wharf isn’t the only place to see the water: Butterfly Beach, a relatively private spot, is situated next to the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel and faces west for ideal sunset-watching views.

Grab lunch at La Super-Rica Taqueria —famous for being one of Julia Child’s favorite eateries. The lines tend to be on the ridiculous side, but it’s worth the wait for novelty’s sake alone.

If you’re traveling with family, spend a few hours at the Santa Barbara Zoo   (reservations required) . Otherwise, grab a glass of Pinot Noir at one of the many tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail   (hours and status vary by winery) ; the spots are located in downtown Santa Barbara, steps from the Amtrak station, and source grapes from local vineyards.  —Seth Kelley

Laguna Beach

4.  Laguna Beach

1 hr by car Forget what you know from a certain unfortunate MTV reality show: Laguna Beach is an easygoing oceanfront city graced with lush vegetation, tidepools and a picturesque rocky coastline.

Main Beach is the spot of choice for downtown sunbathing, but you’ll find pristine, less crowded beaches at tide pool-filled Treasure Island, camper-friendly Crystal Cove or hidden Victoria Beach with its weathered, castle-like turret.

Walk the city’s downtown area to find a mix of shops, galleries and restaurants; many eateries cater to the well heeled, so we suggest bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy on a bench at the hilltop Heisler Park. Do, however, follow the smell of fresh waffle cones onto the enchanting Peppertree Lane for a scoop from Gelato Paradiso .

It’s not just about the beach here; you can explore the reservation-only Hortense Miller Garden  or thousands of acres of hillsides and canyons to find hiking trails, nature centers and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center   (closed through fall 2024) , a sea lion rescue. Summertime typically sees the arrival of two festival favorites: Pageant of the Masters , a live stage interpretation of classical paintings, and Sawdust Art Festival , an open-air artisan market that transforms into a Christmas village in late fall. There’s only one road in and out from the 5, so bring some patience during rush hour—alternatively, take the scenic route and follow Coast Highway through Newport Beach.  —Michael Juliano

Solvang

5.  Solvang

2 hrs by car After Danish immigrants grew tired of Midwestern winters, they began to make their way west and eventually settled in the pastoral Santa Ynez Valley. Though you won’t find many Danes in Solvang anymore, you will find wooden windmills, rural houses and a replica of Copenhagen’s Round Tower. The post-WWII structures are as touristy as they are charming; walk around town to find an assortment of Christmas shops, Hans Christian Andersen and Little Mermaid keepsakes, and sort-of-Danish bakeries.

Solvang’s downtown area is dotted with breweries and pancake cottages, including local standbys Solvang Brewing Company   and Paula’s Pancake House —and an increasingly impressive new culinary scene . For a bit of history on the area, make sure to stop by the humble Elverhøj Museum .

For a more offbeat adventure, head to the outskirts of town to  OstrichLand , which feels like the Jurassic Park of the ostrich and emu world. If you’re visiting in early January, make sure to schedule your trip around the annual Christmas tree bonfire . —Michael Juliano

Balboa Island

6.  Balboa Island

1 hr by car, 5 min ferry

Visitors to Balboa Island in Newport Beach can enter the man-made island by driving onto it via Marine Avenue, but it’s far easier—and more fun—to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the Balboa Island Ferry for a quick and scenic five-minute trip across the water.

The first order of business: getting your hands on one of the island’s famed frozen bananas (make the Bluth family proud). Choose from rivals Sugar N Spice or Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop; both claim to be the originators of the chocolate-covered frozen treat.

Take a jaunt around the 1.6-mile boardwalk surrounding the island, passing by multi-million dollar homes and streets named after gems, before strolling down Marine Avenue, the island’s main artery. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants ( Wilma’s Patio is a staple), boutique shops, art galleries and the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society .

Of course, there’s plenty to do out on the water, too: kayaking, parasailing, paddle boarding and the like. If you’ve got kiddos tagging along, the Balboa Fun Zone on the peninsula hosts a Ferris wheel and plenty of arcade games.  —Erin Kuschner

Los Alamos

7.  Los Alamos

2 hrs 20 mins by car Once a major stagecoach stop, this small, easy-to-miss town looks stuck in the past with its Old West style—but behind the facade are trendy treasures waiting to be discovered. Inside Bob’s Well Bread Bakery is a hip, stylish setup serving artisan breads—including gluten free options—croissants, sandwiches and more. Exploring antique shops and art galleries can easily fill a day here, just be sure to call ahead, as some places are only open on weekends.

A big draw of the Los Alamos area is its wine tasting—this is Santa Barbara County, after all—which can be done at Bedford Winery  and other local tasting rooms. Before you leave town, make a pit stop at  1880 Union , an event space with an authentic stagecoach saloon, or spend the night at the Victorian Mansion Bed and Breakfast . For being a single stoplight town (we haven’t actually counted, but you get it), there’s a bevy of delicious places to eat, such as  Full of Life Flatbread (known for its occasional A-list diners) and the destination-worthy Bell’s .  —Stephanie Morino

San Juan Capistrano

8.  San Juan Capistrano

1 hr 30 min by car, 1 hr 25 min by train A piece of California history and a quaint old town make San Juan Capistrano an off-the-beaten-path day trip with a lot of charm and a little learning. If you take Amtrak there, the train will drop you off right where you want to be—just a couple of blocks from a good cup of coffee at Hidden House Coffee .

From there, you can tour Mission San Juan Capistrano , founded in 1776 and arguably one of the mission chain’s prettiest links. The mission used to be known as a migratory destination for swallows in February, but the famous birds have been spotty in recent years. If you have your heart set on getting up close with some animals, check out Zoomars   (reservations recommended) , a petting zoo for kids of all ages (read: adults love it, too). It’s a historic ranch where you can also pan for gold like the California miners did. You’re also near Los Rios Historic District , which has some historic homes and museums that are perfect for a walking tour.

When you get hungry, you have several options: Heritage Barbecue serves remarkable Texas-style smoked meats,  Ramos House is a romantic spot known for great food and huge Bloody Marys on the weekends and  Five Vines is a nearby wine bar with snacks and sandwiches. If you want to catch a later train, head over to Swallow’s Inn , the local dive bar, where bras hang from the ceiling and bands play late into the night. You’re still within stumbling distance of the train station.  —Sara Fay

Oak Glen

9.  Oak Glen

1 hr 30 mins by car

Though you can visit Oak Glen year-round, the best time to head to this picturesque town to the east is September through November. The five-mile loop of orchards, ranches, shops and restaurants is a necessity for any New England transplant looking for fall foliage, and the town’s most popular activity— apple picking —is a nice alternative to canvassing L.A.’s farmers’ markets.

Many of the orchards, like Willowbrook Apple Farm  (opens Labor Day weekend), offer a cider press to make your own cider, which you can pair with a cinnamon roll or apple dumpling from Apple Annie’s Restaurant & Bakery . Stop by the Turquoise Pueblo  on your way back to L.A. for some beautiful handmade Native American jewelry.  —Erin Kuschner

Solana Beach

10.  Solana Beach

2 hrs by car, or 2 hrs by train

If you want to spend a day in San Diego, you can either try to go big (the San Diego Zoo! Balboa Park!  Padres game! All in one day!) or go small-town and spend a chill day in a cool oceanfront neighborhood. The beach towns north of San Diego—no, we’re not talking about Pacific Beach—are the stuff of the Beach Boys lyrics.

In Solana Beach, you’ll find laid-back vibes and beaches that aren’t completely overrun. It’s easy to get there from L.A. via Amtrak, and it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the spots you’ll want to hit are within walking distance of the station.

Start at  the Naked Cafe for a beach-y brunch, then, either head down to the beach at Fletcher Cove or cruise along the Cedros Design District for window shopping, brewery hopping and people watching. There’s also a mix of cute boutiques, surf shops, restaurants, taco spots and bars along South Coast Highway. If it’s racing season, the Del Mar Racetrack  isn’t far—it would be either a long walk or a short car ride.

Before you catch the train back up to L.A., you have several good options for dinner near the tracks: Station Sushi is a solid locals’ spot for classic and creative rolls, Bangkok Bay  has some of the best Thai food we’ve ever eaten and Pizza Port is known for being a last-slice-and-beer-before-Amtrak place. It’s directly across a pedestrian crosswalk from the train station, and has been slinging pies and pouring pints for three decades.  —Sara Fay

If the San Diego Zoo caught your eye, book a ticket and spend a day with the animals.

Temecula

11.  Temecula

When hoofing it to Napa and Sonoma isn’t an option, Temecula is your next best destination for a day of wine tasting. Before sampling the grapes, stop by quaint Old Town Temecula, where you can pay a visit to the Temecula Valley Museum  for a historical walking tour.

Then it’s down to business; the heart of Temecula’s Wine Country includes more than 30 wineries, which you can bounce between at your own leisure (don’t drink and drive, folks!) or take a guided tour from one of the many wine tour companies in the area. Taste your way through the 70-acre Wilson Creek Winery and the red-focused Monte De Oro Winery   before heading to Maurice Car’rie Vineyard  for an educated tasting and a loaf of the vineyard’s famous sourdough bread, oozing with brie.

Just down the road, Magical Adventure Balloon Rides encapsulates another popular Temecula activity: riding in a hot air balloon. We can’t think of a better way to end your day in Temecula than by sailing over the town’s vineyards at sunset with a glass of Champagne in hand. —Erin Kuschner

Palm Springs

12.  Palm Springs

2 hrs by car Known for its ultra-fancy resorts and legacy of celebrity residents, Palm Springs is worth at least a weekend, if you can afford the time. Still, if you’re limited to 24 hours, make the desert city a choose-your-own-adventure day trip.

Start with brunch at Cheeky’s , and trust us that it’s worth the wait. If you’re in the mood to exercise, check out Indian Canyons , made up of three separate canyons (Palm, Murray and Andreas) that each offer hiking trails and fantastic views of the diverse landscape. Another of the best ways to see Palm Springs is on the Aerial Tramway , which helps visitors escape the heat of the desert with a scenic ride to the top of the San Jacinto Mountains.

If relaxation is your goal, shop at the outlets in Cabazon, or just get a massage and sit by the pool. The Palm Springs Art Museum  is small but displays works from incredible artists including Picasso and Warhol. For dinner, try reservations at Sandfish  for superb sushi and Japanese whiskey.  —Seth Kelley

Big Bear

13.  Big Bear

2 hrs by car; access may be limited during the winter This mountain town is home to some of L.A.’s closest ski slopes in winter, but don’t discount a summertime trip, when a dip in a mountain lake is the best way to keep cool. Rent a kayak or paddleboard to tour the water, and keep an eye out for the white-domed Big Bear Solar Observatory perched at the water’s edge on the north shore. The hiking here is also plentiful and offers some amazing views.

If you’re a bit more adventurous, stop by Bear Valley Bikes and rent a mountain bike; there are fire roads for beginners and lots of technical, downhill single track for more seasoned riders.

Back in town, check out the Bowling Barn  and the Alpine Slide , both of which are a blast with or without kids in tow. For a drink with the locals, head to karaoke night (which is pretty much every night) at Murray’s Saloon , the town’s self-proclaimed “five star hole in the wall.”  —Kate Wertheimer

Joshua Tree

14.  Joshua Tree

2 hrs 15 mins by car You’ll find Joshua Tree National Park on our shortlist for perfect day trips, road trips and weekend getaways from L.A. That’s for good reason: the magical desert spot—with its gnarled, ancient namesake trees, picturesque cacti and giant boulders—should be on every traveler’s bucket list, no matter how much time they have to spare.

Watch rock climbers scale mini-mountains at  Hidden Valley campground (first-come, first-served) or try some scrambling yourself at Jumbo Rocks . If you visit in spring, head south to Pinto Basin for a chance to see colorful wildflowers in bloom.

On the drive out, plan for a pit stop at the Cabazon exit, where you can explore the famed dinosaur park from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (and even, for a fee, climb inside the three-story T. Rex for a photo op in his mouth). Shop for cacti at multiple roadside marts on Twentynine Palms Highway, or hang a left at Pioneertown Road for a stop at Pappy & Harriet’s , which boasts a ghost town, small inn and great live music.

Another worthwhile detour is Landers, home of countless alien sightings and new-age sound baths at the  Integratron   (reservations required) . In the town of Joshua Tree, take your pick from a few tasty restaurants, including Crossroads Cafe   to rub elbows with locals. There are some good thrift shops around here, as well as the kind of quirky public art; be sure to check out the World Famous Crochet Museum , as well as prolific artist Andrea Zittel’s A-Z West tour.  —Kate Wertheimer

Salton Sea and Slab City

15.  Salton Sea and Slab City

3 hrs by car This day trip isn’t for everyone; but if you’re a fan of things decrepit, forgotten and way off the beaten path, head south to Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. A popular vacation spot in the ’50s and ’60s, these days all that’s left of the once-booming seaside town are photo-worthy ruins and a lot of dead fish.

The Ski Inn remains; stop by for a drink or a greasy bite and decorate a dollar bill to hang on the wall or ceiling. Continue on to Niland, made famous by artist Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain , a giant folk art monument made from adobe, straw and thousands of gallons of paint (you may remember it from Into the Wild ). Beyond is Slab City, a former marine training base that now exists as a squat for campers, transients and desert dwellers who’ve created a community complete with a library, skate park and live music stage, “the Range.” If you’re respectful and friendly, folks may share their hot spring and swimming hole secrets, so bring a bathing suit—or do as the locals do and go in your birthday suit.  —Kate Wertheimer

Washington Oak Gardens State Park

Washington Oak Gardens State Park is beautiful and it is one of the best Florida day trips from Jacksonville . Located on the Palm Coast, these gardens are just an hour drive south of Jacksonville. Well known for their lush gardens, this state park preserves the original habitat of a Florida barrier island.

This park is so great because it is essentially a two for one. The formal gardens are stunning with a showcase of lush native Florida plants, winding reflection ponds, and groomed walking trails. Because the park sits on the coast, you also get the beach. Washington Oaks has a unique shoreline of coquina rock formations. The waves from the Atlantic crash against these rock formations and it feels like the cover of a romance novel.

Spend the day at Washington Oak strolling among pristine gardens. Go beachcoming for seashells on the seashore. Explore tidal pools among the ancient rock formations. Take memorable vacation photos with friends or a partner. Break out the binoculars for great bird watching. Go fishing on the beach. Sit in one of the serene gazebos and read a book. Plan a few Florida day trips to Crab Island in Destin, Florida. Nestled in the heart of the Emerald Coast, this gem is a fan favorite of locals and well, the world. Crab Island has made a name for itself time and time again with features on Good Morning America, HGTV, and many other travel magazines and publications worldwide.

Crab Island is loved by many as one of the best North Florida day trips for the beautiful emerald waters and the shallow sandbar below. At times, the sandbar will have as little as one foot of water, and the deepest it gets is four feet. With gorgeous sunsets and a high likelihood of seeing dolphins, Crab Island is popular by demand.

The tradition of Crab Island is to reach it by boat, anchor, then spend the day playing in the water. Though the island is not far from shore, it is best enjoyed by boat or by floating tiki bar. Yes, you can drive a floating tiki bar to Crab Island with all your friends.

Beer Can Island

Beer Can Island is downright magical. When planning Central Florida day trips, set the itinerary to go to Beer Can Island. It will feel like you have been transported to an oasis that nature took over. Huge old tree “bones” that are half sunken into the sands make up this enchanting shoreline.

Fun fact: there are two Beer Can Islands in Florida. The one worth going to the Beer Can Island that is also known as Greer Island. Located near Longboat Key by Sarasota, this Florida day trips is perfect for relaxing, taking photos and climbing on old trees. Some of the old trees are sturdy enough to string a hammock from to enjoy the rolling waves.

Be sure to take care of the land when visiting. As Beer Can Island hosts a very fragile ecosystem that needs help protecting. This means pack your trash out and leave no trace aside from footprints. That way Beer Can Island will live on like the tree bones that mark this shore.

To help plan this Florida day trips, read our detailed list of tips for Beer Can Island which talks about parking, how to get there, and more!

If you are looking for exquisite beauty and a perfect place to relax, visit Bok Towers. The famous Bok Towers were built by Edward Bok who wanted to create an enchanting meditative garden. Today the meditative garden and reflection pond now doubles as a bird sanctuary.

Be sure to explore the paved and mulched trails to see the native Florida plants. These paths will lead you to the Tower which is actually a Carillion, a type of bell tower that can be played like an instrument. Go at 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM to hear the Carillion’s daily concerts. If you can’t make those times, you will still be able to hear the tower’s music playing throughout the grounds every half hour.

Bok Towers is “a spot of beauty second to none in the country”, which makes it the perfect place to plan a quick and easy Florida day trips to. This place is also a stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail. With over 126 species of birds, you’ll want to bring the binoculars to spot them all!

Saint Pete Sunken Gardens

The perfect Florida day trips are the ones that you can do easily. Saint Pete Sunken Gardens is that place and much, much more. You’ll be astonished when you pull up to this century-old hidden gem that is stack dab in the middle of the city. Yes, its true! However, these gardens are completely encased by plants so you won’t feel like you are in the city at all!

These picturesque grounds showcase the best of Florida’s native plants and animals. Because the garden is all about crafting an otherworldly type of beauty, a few exotic plants and animals can be found here too. Take a walk over the bridge that hangs over Koi pond, or check out the pink flamingos here. Its no wonder why the sunken gardens are one of Florida’s best photo spots for Instagram .

There are many winding pathways to explore, so you will want to plan to walk them all. Otherwise, you might miss out on something! It truly is the best way to fall in love with the grounds and only takes a little over 1.5 hours walk. There are plenty of sitting spots to rest in along the way.

With so much to offer, Saint Pete’s Sunken Gardens are the perfect Florida day trip from Tampa to take friends and family to. If you want to know more, read our guide on what to expect at Saint Pete’s magical Sunken Gardens !

Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour

One of the coolest Florida day trips that can ever be experienced are the bioluminescent kayaking tours offered in the state. With that said, plan for a trip to Florida’s East Coast near Central Florida.

Many people don’t know about the bioluminescent secret that is hidden in Florida. These tiny lights shine bright blue in the water. A lot like fireflies, bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism. This natural phenomena is downright magical to experience and totally bucket list worthy.

The presence of bioluminescence in the water is never a guarantee, but it is worth every effort to see. There are three places we love to take bioluminescent kayaking tours: BK Adventure, Florida Adventurer, and A Day Away Kayak Tours.

For the best chance to see bioluminescence, plan for this trip between May and October. Since these organisms emit such low levels of light, you’ll want to be sure to see them two hours after the sun goes down. The dark will really make the shine come to life!

For more information on how to witness this wonder, read our detailed guide !

Coral Castle

The mystery of Coral Castle is one of the most interesting Florida day trips. Let me be upfront. Coral Castle isn’t actually constructed of coral, nor is it an actual castle. However, the construction of these stones have been compared to the mysteries of Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

The reason why these stones are just as mysterious is because they were constructed by one man. Scientists say its improbable and some even claim it to be impossible! So how can one man move more than 1,000 tones of limestone into such shapes and sizes? Discover sundials, crescent moons, chairs, and much more.

For more castles in Florida, you can read our blogpost  here . It will be sure to make for a more interesting Florida trip to be able to see castles among the Floridian jungles!

Art lovers will love spending the day gazing at John Foundling’s personal art collection. The collection includes works from artists such as Velázquez, Rubens and Veronese. It gives Wes Anderson vibes within a classic renaissance style with its renaissance-inspired pink courtyard.

However, if you are just going for a fun day on the National Seashore, you’ll find plenty to do in the Virginia portion of the National Park. If you are thinking of visiting during the summer months you can expect to see wild foals along with wild horses. You can also go swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. Monticello is one of the best day trips from Williamsburg. It is also one of the best Virginia day trips for history buffs. For those that don’t know, Monticello was the primary home and plantation of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was a founding father and also served as the third President of the United States. It is important to remember when visiting Monticello that it was a plantation and Jefferson did have enslaved peoples working on the property. Please be respectful of that history if you go to tour the home.

When you visit Monticello, you’ll find that they do not try to hide the plantation’s dark past. Instead, you will learn about slavery at the time and how Jefferson profited immensely from this dark practice. As you tour Monticello, you will be reminded that it was built on the backs of enslaved peoples.

This is set against the backdrop of learning about Jefferson and his family life while living in the home. It is often an eye-opening way to look at the history of one of the Founding Fathers. You’ll see how that history has shaped the United States of America as a whole. We guarantee you will leave Monticello having learned something new and impactful.

There are also shops where you can purchase the products that are made right there in town. You’ll also find restaurants with delicious period-accurate food, guided walking tours, and even guided ghost tours. As you travel on Skyline Drive you’ll be able to stop into cute Virginia small towns, admire the view at scenic overlooks, and even go hiking. It’s one of the best National Parks in Virginia. It easily welcomes millions of visitors all year to enjoy its stunning views and landscapes. One of the best times to go is during the Peak Season. It also makes for one of the best day trips from Roanoke since it’s not necessarily right in the city center.

The Mill Mountain Star is a 90-foot star-shaped structure that lights up. It’s sort of like the Hollywood sign of Roanoke. It has been lighting up the mountainside since the 1950s, so it’s become a pretty iconic piece of Roanoke history. At the Star, you’ll get to see some beautiful views of the city of Roanoke.

Because the Mill Mountain Star is located in a public park, you’ll find other things to do there as well. Since that day in 1884, Barboursville has been preserved as ruins and is one of the best day trips from Charlottesville. What makes it so special is that is the only known structure in Orange County, where it is located, to be designed by Thomas Jefferson. The ruins are registered as National Historic Places and are actually one of the day trips in Virginia for couples. That is because the ruins are now home to one of the best wineries in Virginia. Historic Jamestown and Yorktown

On your list of day trips from Williamsburg , you absolutely need to add a trip to Historic Jamestown and Yorktown. You can drive about 30 minutes outside of Williamsburg and end up in Historic Jamestown or Yorktown, which is part of the ‘Historic Triangle’ in Virginia. Because they are all so close together, we suggest making this a historic tour day trip from Williamsburg. Start in Historic Jamestown, which was originally founded in 1607 by European immigrants.

Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in America for those making the journey from various countries in Europe. You’ll find a living history museum, similar to Colonial Williamsburg, but on a smaller scale. There is also a reconstructed Native American village alongside a Colonial fort, so you can see how Native Americans and European immigrants would have lived in the early 1600s in the area.

In Yorktown, there is another similar site. However, Yorktown wasn’t founded until 1691, over 80 years later. You’ll notice some similarities, but also plenty of differences as generations learned what did and didn’t work in the area. The town is probably best known as the site of the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. It’s where the American Revolution is said to have finally ended, with the surrender of English General Cornwallis. While you are in Yorktown, you can tour the battlefield as well as the American Revolution Museum. A journey to the two historic cities is one of the best day trips from Williamsburg.

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

The Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is actually in three states; West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. Depending on what you’re interested in, the different states offer different experiences. The Maryland section is mainly hiking trails and scenic views along the Potomac River.

West Virginia and Virginia share the section of the park that has some really cool historic buildings. Harpers Ferry is truly one of the best small towns in West Virginia that you should explore.

Because of its location, it’s a great option for day trips from Northern Virginia.

Just like so many other places to visit in Virginia in one day, the National Historic Park is bursting with history. You’ll find a historic town with 19th-century buildings and see what it was like to live in a port town. There are living history events, local artisans, and more. You’ll also find hiking and biking trails as well as enjoy watersports like swimming, kayaking, and boating.

Keep in mind that when you are planning your trip, you may find that the trailheads or destinations you have in mind may be across the border in either Maryland or West Virginia. Either way, it’s still one of the most fun day trips in Virginia.

Make sure to check out our list of things to do in Harpers Ferry!

Do you love historic trains? Ever wanted to ride on one?

If so, you can have your chance at the Texas State Railroad in Palestine, Texas.

Here, in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the old steam locomotives still run, and you can be a part of it.

Book an open car, a dome car, or even a caboose for a 2 ½ hour journey through the pines of East Texas.

This day trip is absolutely perfect as an outing for the whole family.

Caddo Mounds State Historic Site

Deep in the East Texas forest, we find the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site.

Located between Crockett and Nacogdoches, Texas, the Caddo Mounds is a place to visit the past.

Set amongst the pines and near the Neches River, the ritual dirt mounds of the site’s namesake were long abandoned when the Caddo people were forced to move east into Louisiana territory.

Amongst the ancient mounds now stands a museum on the history of the Caddo people in the area and their way of life.

Wonderful West Texas Day Trips

Trans-pecos festival of music.

This annual music fest takes place in one of West Texas’ favorite and eclectic towns.

Each year the town of Marfa celebrates the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music.

Although this can go on for more than one day, it also makes for an awesome day trip of live music.

Book a place to stay early, though, because finding a bed in Marfa during the festival can be difficult.

Balmorhea State Park

Part ancient water source and part modern-day swimming pool, Balmorhea State Park is a natural wonder of West Texas.

To cool off from the summer desert heat, take a drive to this spring-fed marvel and take a dip with fish and other wildlife in this crystal clear, cool water.

The park’s green grass around the water hole has plenty of room for a shady picnic when swimming turns to hunger.

Don’t miss out on this big sky country gem when looking for day trips in Texas.

Monahans State Park

If you like the outdoors and don’t mind a bit of sand in your shoes, then Monahans State Park makes for an exciting day trip in Texas.

Monahans is the Texas version of what we think the Sahara looks like with its rolling sand dunes.

Spend the day surfing down the dunes and enjoy a picnic lunch for a break at this unique West Texas state park .

Sonora Caverns

A few miles off of Interstate 10, we find the Sonora Caverns, widely considered one of the most beautiful caves in Texas .

Privately owned, these underground trails have developed over millions of years.

Take a tour through the caverns and see the incredible geology that forms around us through the interaction of rock and water.

Be prepared for total darkness like you’ve never seen before when your guide turns out the lights in a demonstration of total blackness.

After your venture under the earth, take time to browse the large gift shop that certainly has a souvenir for you to take home.

Stunning Day Trips in South Texas

Corpus christi.

What could be better than to visit the statue of the queen of Tejano music? All the fun that surrounds it of course!

Everyday trip to Corpus Christi should add a visit to the statue of Selena (Mirador de la Flor).

That’s only to start the fun. After your statue pilgrimage, enjoy a full day of shopping, eating, and relaxing on one of the many beaches in Corpus Christi .

As the sun goes down, the nightlife begins. Try your dancing skills with the Texas two-step or enjoy some drinks overlooking the water.

Whatever your choice, you’ll find plenty to do on your TX day trip to Corpus Christi.

South Padre Island

Keeping with the ocean vibe, our next day trip is an adventure to South Padre Island .

Although there are several seaside places to visit in the state, South Padre is our version of clear water paradise.

Spend the day at the beach, eating some great seafood, and for a memorable close to the evening, go horseback riding on the beach at sunset.

Cool Texas Day Trips in the Panhandle

Palo duro canyon state park.

The Texas version of the Grand Canyon happens to be located in the panhandle of the state, just outside of Amarillo and not far from Route 66 .

With over 120 miles of area and wilderness, Palo Duro Canyon is one of the absolute best day trips in Texas for those visiting the Panhandle.

Take in one of the many trails for hiking the canyon (especially the hike to the Lighthouse !), or bring your mountain bike for a spin.

Caprock Canyons State Park

When you feel the need to hang out with the state’s wild animals, take a day trip to Caprock Canyons State Park.

One of the park’s main attractions is the bats and bison that make the area their home.

Texas has the world’s largest bat population, and this state park offers the time to spend with them.

The bison, of course, is a throwback to yesteryear when millions of them roamed the plains of Texas and the U.S.

Classic Central Texas Day Trips

Hamilton pool preserve.

One of the most beautiful places to visit in the Hill Country, not to mention one of the most popular day trips in Texas, is the famous Hamilton Pool located in Dripping Springs .

If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a clear water grotto fed by a waterfall from above.

This special place is hidden and only accessible by a short but rocky hike down and into the grotto where its year-round cold waters welcome visitors for a swim.

Be sure to plan ahead and make a reservation before visiting, as the available spots book up weeks in advance.

Fredericksburg

Not too far outside the city of Austin, you’ll find the delightful town of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Fredericksburg is known for its German heritage (and food), its beautiful Hill Country setting, its proximity to Enchanted Rock , and its many, many wineries .

The perfect day trip to Fredericksburg is bound to involve a little bit of everything–be sure to stroll Main Street, pay a visit to a winery, enjoy some German food, and check out the surrounding area.

During bluebonnet season, Willow Loop Road is a must-visit, and for those who want to seek out a Texas legend, nearby Luckenbach is well worth a visit!

Inks Lake State Park

Texas has some of the best state parks in the country, and boy, do we have a ton of them. There are not many areas of the state that don’t offer a park nearby.

For a nice day trip for the family, take a drive to Inks Lake in the Highland Lakes area of the Hill Country.

This lake has clear water and plenty of space for spreading out a picnic.

Try your luck at fishing off one of the lake’s piers, or rent a paddleboat and kayak for a self-guided tour (be sure to seek if you can spot one of the lake’s waterfalls from the water!).

If getting on the water is not your thing, there are plenty of trails to explore around the lake and even a bird blind set up for the bird watchers in your family.

Jacob’s Well

Speaking of cool and clear waters, Jacob’s Well is one of the most popular–and mysterious– swimming holes in Texas .

Located near Wimberley, Texas, the well has been welcoming swimmers to its natural beauty for decades.

Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that is located in the second-largest submerged cave in Texas.

At 140 feet deep, it’s quite mesmerizing, and plunging into its icy waters is incredibly refreshing on a hot day.

Like several of the most popular day trips in Texas, you’ll need to plan ahead to visit Jacob’s Well: reservations to swim in it during the summer sell out weeks in advance.

If you only want to take a short stroll to admire it from above, though, no reservation is needed.

River Tubing in New Braunfels

Yes, we saved the ultimate in Texas day trip for last.

Although you can make a full weekend out of this summer tradition, for most, a single day is enough to wear even the most adventurous person out.

The Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is home to one of the most fun activities we have in Texas, river-tubing.

River tubing in Texas is quite simple. Rent a tube for you and one for your ice chest full of your favorite beverages and float down the river until the sun bakes you to a crisp (did I mention you need sunscreen)?

And don’t worry about being alone during your float; each day, hundreds of others will be doing the same and enjoying this wonderful river.

If the river itself is not to your liking, visit the Schlitterbahn, a New Braunfels water playground with slides and other fun water adventures.

Introduction

Are you in need of a quick escape from your daily routine? A day trip is the perfect solution! With so many incredible destinations just a short flight away, you can explore new places, indulge in exciting activities, and create lasting memories, all within a single day.

Choosing the right destination for a day trip can be a challenging task. Factors such as proximity, weather, and attractions play a vital role in making the most of your limited time. Whether you’re a beach lover, an adventure enthusiast, a history buff, or a culture aficionado, there is a day trip destination that suits your interests and preferences.

In this article, we will explore various types of day trip destinations, from coastal getaways to mountain retreats, historical sites to cultural hubs, and outdoor adventures to bustling urban centers. Each destination offers a unique experience and promises to make your day trip an unforgettable one.

So, fasten your seatbelt and get ready to embark on a whirlwind journey as we discover the best places to fly for a day trip!

Factors to Consider

When planning a day trip, there are several important factors to consider in order to make the most of your time and ensure a successful adventure:

  • Proximity: Opt for a destination that is within a reasonable flying distance. The shorter the flight, the more time you’ll have to explore and enjoy your chosen day trip location.
  • Weather: Check the weather forecast for both your departure and arrival destinations. Choose a place with favorable weather conditions that align with your desired activities.
  • Attractions: Research and identify the key attractions or experiences offered by the destination. Whether it’s visiting historical landmarks, enjoying outdoor activities, or immersing yourself in a vibrant cultural scene, make sure the place has something that aligns with your interests.
  • Transportation: Consider the transportation options available at your chosen destination. Will you need to rent a car, take public transportation, or rely on organized tours to get around? Ensure there are convenient and reliable transportation options to maximize your time.
  • Time Zone: Take into account any time zone differences between your departure and arrival locations. You don’t want to lose valuable time adjusting to a new time zone, so choose a destination that is within a similar time zone or has minimal time difference.
  • Safety and Accessibility: Research the safety of the destination and any travel advisories in place. Additionally, consider the accessibility of tourist sites and attractions, especially if you have limited time.

By considering these factors, you can ensure that your day trip is well-planned, enjoyable, and tailored to your preferences and interests.

Chatham Bars Inn

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Late May marks the beginning of Cape Cod’s whale watching season, and wildlife enthusiasts won’t want to miss the opportunity to set out in the sunshine and try to catch a glimpse of migrating humpback and finback whales. Book with  Hyannis (out of Barnstable) or  Sea Salt Charters (out of Provincetown), both of whom work with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) to ensure safe and sustainable practices. Afterwards, grab an overflowing scoop of Marstons Mills Mint Chip or Bass River Black Raspberry at  Cape Cod Creamery , or snack on classic New England clam chowder and an extra-buttery lobster roll at  Sesuit Harbor Café , overlooking the water.

Stay here:  Not far from the stunning nature of the Outer Cape, there are loads of oceanfront villas and lodges designed with utmost comfort and privacy in mind.  The Villages at Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club , in Brewster, offers airy suites full of clean neutrals and has access to its sister resort’s nine tennis courts, five pools, bike rentals, and private beach. Just south of that is  Chatham Bars Inn , situated on 25 private acres perched atop a seaside bluff. St. Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg is the ideal Florida city for a long weekend vacation. Nestled along the serene Gulf Coast, St. Pete has some of the most enviable beaches in the state, but it’s also gaining recognition for its thriving arts scene. Most notable is the world-renowned Dalí Museum , but don’t miss the colorful and unique murals adorning the downtown area as well. Meanwhile, the St. Pete Pier, reopened in summer 2020 after a years-long revitalization effort, offers 26 acres of dining, entertainment, and greenery to explore near downtown.

Stay here: Art lovers should stay at the historic Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection , with a downtown location close to murals and museums. The resort also boasts several outdoor pools, a golf course, tennis courts, and its own marina.

Sedona, Arizona

A year-round haven for new age radicals, desert-loving hikers , and singletrack-speeding mountain bikers, Sedona truly comes alive in the spring, when the weather hovers around a breezy 86 degrees, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Immerse yourself in the locale’s famous red rocks on the easy  Fay Canyon Trail , then unwind in town with a sumptuous spa treatment at  The Wilde or  Amara Resort and Spa . Meet a mystic or buy a fully-charged crystal at the legendary  Center for the New Age before indulging in a fabulous canyon-view dinner at  Che Ah Chi .

Stay here:  If you’re alright staying out of town,  Enchantment Resort (and their newly-refurbished sister property  Mii amo ) are the best of the bunch, and ultra-close to must-have experiences, like hiking and cycling through dramatic sandstone ravines. If you’re hell-bent on sleeping in town, check out the wellness program at luxurious  L’Auberge de Sedona , which, apart from having dreamy cottages set against the backdrop of Oak Creek, hosts art therapy sessions, yoga classes, and sound healing sit-ins.

Jeune et Jolie Carlsbad California

Carlsbad, California

Every year from March to May, ranunculus flowers take over 50 acres of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch (most people visit during peak bloom in April, so you’ll dodge the flower peepers over MDW). But this coastal SoCal town is well worth visiting beyond the botanicals. You can easily spend a long weekend swimming and kayaking off the beaches, taking the family to LEGOLAND California, or indulging in some seriously great food. Be sure to stop by Jeune et Jolie , a contemporary French-style bistro that earned its first Michelin star in late 2021; then finish up with some must-try shortbread cookies (all made with local ingredients) at Carlsbad Cookie Company .

Stay here: When you’re not busy filling your Instagram feed with florals, rest up in peak luxury at the Park Hyatt Aviara , a Hot List and Readers’ Choice Award winner. The 200-acre coastal resort attracts visitors with an 18-hole golf course, expansive spa, and both family-friendly and adults-only pool areas.

Calgary and Banff National Park, Canada

What used to be known as a big-industry cowboy town has since been revitalized into a hotel and foodie mecca, and it’s all just a 90-minute drive from iconic  Banff National Park . Fly into Calgary and spend a day walking around picturesque Prince’s Island Park and stop in for a hearty brunch at  River Café , which uses locally-sourced produce and seafood in its dishes. Grab dinner and a craft cocktail at ultra-hip  Shokunin , located right downtown. If you've only got one day to spend in Banff, rent a car and head for the darling  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise , which sits at the edge of the brilliantly blue tarn that shares its name. From here, guests can hop directly onto a series of postcard-worthy hiking trails, canoe in the lake, or catch some incredible, bird’s eye views of the Canadian Rockies from the  Lake Louise Summer Gondola , which opens May 19. Hoping to see a glacier up close? The  Columbia Icefield Adventure opened on May 6.

Stay here:  In town, keep it historic and elegant by booking a room at the centrally-located  Fairmont Palliser , or get funky and enjoy Bow River views at newer  Alt Hotel Calgary East Village . In Banff, there’s no better activity access than at  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (pro tip: they just revamped their restaurant and wellness programs in mid-2022), which features marvelous views of rocky mountaintops and, of course, glacially-fed Lake Louise.

Maine

We’ve never been more excited to plan a trip to Maine, thanks in large part to the 2021 opening of Under Canvas’s new outpost in Acadia National Park. The 100-acre oceanfront “glampsite” feature 62 luxe tents, which guests can enjoy between hiking, picking blueberries, or chartering their own personal lobster boat. Outside of Acadia on Deer Isle, we’re also eager to visit Aragosta at Goose Cove , a restaurant helmed by Devin Finigan, who was recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 James Beard Awards. As an added bonus, Aragosta doubles as a hotel from May to November, with 12 suites and cottages.

Stay here: If you decide to pass on Under Canvas, head to Portland for your accommodations. The Press Hotel , located downtown, is a continuous winner in our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, thanks to its fun journalism theme (complete with typewriters in the lobby), comfortable beds, and a restaurant serving up super-local dishes.

Cabo San Lucas Memorial Day Getaways

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas has long been the favorite landing spot of party-ready spring breakers, but you’re likely to find a more laidback crowd during Memorial Day Weekend. Charter a boat to see the famous El Arco rock formation and do some snorkeling, then head back to town for some seriously delicious Mexican food. We recommend Los Michoacanos , a small chain that has a recipe for pork carnitas dating back to 1899.

Stay here: Enveloped by short, craggy hills on 24 pristine acres of Baja California beachfront, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal (a Readers’ Choice Award winner for five years running) is practically floating in open waters. Take advantage of the “Beyond the Beach Curated Exploration” program, which offers a personalized day trip to swim with whale sharks and snorkel in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park.

Inns of Aurora

The Finger Lakes, New York

Long known for its wine, the Finger Lakes of New York has been undergoing a positive transformation over the past few years. The 14-county region, defined by its 11 long, skinny lakes, is about four to five hours northwest of New York City by car, and city folks will certainly enjoy the slow, rural pace of life here. For the holiday weekend, we particularly recommend the town of Waterloo, also known as the birthplace of Memorial Day. This is where the first formal observance of the holiday was held, and today you can visit landmarks like the National Memorial Day Museum and Scythe Tree, which was originally planted by a Civil War soldier. Then, head south to the storybook village of Aurora, where you should grab lunch at Fargo Bar & Grill before settling down in one of the town’s historic inns.

Stay here: We’re big fans of the Inns of Aurora , a collection of luxury guesthouses with eclectic interiors and lake views. The inn also has one of the best hotel amenities we’ve come across: a Director of Serenity, who is dedicated to bringing physical, mental, and spiritual wellness to guests, whether it’s through one-on-one yoga lessons or curated relaxation playlists and customized aromatherapy.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

As the weather gets increasingly hot in Phoenix, residents flock to northern Arizona for cooler temperatures. (Well, relatively cooler.) If you have yet to visit one of the country’s most popular national parks, go ahead and follow the locals to the Grand Canyon to enjoy the world wonder in all its glory. Aim to hit the trails by 10 a.m. at the latest to dodge the big crowds and searing sun—although you should pack extra sunscreen just in case.

Stay here: Book a room at the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel , located in Williams right next door to the Grand Canyon Railway train depot. Here you'll be just a train ride—a very scenic train ride—away from the Grand Canyon, and you can avoid the long lines of traffic into the park. It’s even possible to charter an entire railway car complete with chefs and bartenders, ideal for milestone moments like graduation, family reunions, or birthday.

Williamsburg

Williamsburg, Virginia

One of our favorite weekend getaways from D.C. , Williamsburg is a great place to spend Memorial Day. The city stands in the middle of what’s dubbed the historic triangle (along with Jamestown and Yorktown), in a Virginia peninsula bookended by the James and York rivers. Aside from spending time outdoors in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown’s open-air museums, there are plenty of fun activities that signal the start of summer: kayaking, golfing, farmer’s markets in Yorktown, and, of course, a full day spent at Busch Gardens .

Stay here: Staying at one of the Colonial Williamsburg Resorts allows you to soak up all that history and culture even after the attractions close. The resorts are offering a Summer Getaway Package beginning in mid-May that comes with nightly accommodations, Busch Gardens tickets, passes to Colonial Williamsburg, and more.

San Juan PR

Puerto Rico

We’ve evangelized about Puerto Rico for many reasons in recent years, from the post-Hurricane Maria hotel renovations to the relatively low prices of round-trip airfares. While the island certainly warrants repeat visits, you can get a good taste of San Juan and its surrounding beaches in just three days . Walk around the capital city’s candy-colored historic district and sample classic Puerto Rican cuisine at Café Manolin, then rent a car and seek out some nature. It only takes about six hours to drive around the entire island, giving you ample time to visit sites like the idyllic Dorado Beach and El Yunque National Forest.

Stay here: Spend your nights (and part of your days) at the luxurious modern retreat that is Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve . After being greeted at check-in with tropical popsicles, you can expect huge rooms, cinematic views of the ocean, and a private butler to arrange helicopter tours and private yacht bookings.

New River Gorge Bridge West Virginia

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

May is considered the ideal month for  paddling high whitewater on the New River, and if you’re looking for an epic (and active) family getaway, look no further than America’s youngest national park,  New River Gorge . With an average high of 70 degrees throughout the month, it’s also an excellent time to hit the area’s many hiking trails (we love the 3.2-mile (round trip) jaunt to  Long Point , which features an excellent view of the impressive steel of New River Gorge Bridge). There’s loads of world-class  rock climbing in the park, too, as well as mellow opportunities to grab your  stand-up paddleboard and enjoy the sunset at Summersville Lake.

Stay here:  By far, the biggest game in town is  Adventures on the Gorge , which boasts everything from cozy glamping tents to deluxe four-bedroom cabins with private hot tubs (they’ve also got a tasty on-site restaurant overlooking the gorge that serves up standard Americana fare– Smokey’s ). Or, if you’ve got the whole crew in tow, snag an amenity-rich vacation rental like  The Paddle House or  The LilyPad .

Hotel Zena Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C.

Given the patriotic nature of the holiday weekend, our nation’s capital is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. Set aside time for the National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30 at 2 p.m., which ushers floats, marching bands, and veterans down Constitution Avenue. Then pay your respects at the various memorials and monuments on the National Mall, and book a table at one of the trendy restaurants near The Wharf. Come nighttime, the city’s abundance of stellar hotels will have you spoiled for choice.

Stay here: Open since October 2020, Hotel Zena is proving to be one of the buzziest hotels in the city. The hotel has branded itself with artsy women’s empowerment, from the portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg hanging in the lobby to the transparent reception desk filled with recycled high heels. Consider its Logan Circle location an added bonus.

Bermuda Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

You must admit, a long weekend spent lounging on pink-sand beaches and sipping rum swizzles sounds pretty perfect. That’s exactly what you’ll get (and then some) on a trip to Bermuda , which is an easy 90-minute, non-stop flight from New York. Despite its small size of about 21 miles long, the North Atlantic island is filled with tons of things to do , from helmet diving and nature reserve tours to excellent shops and restaurants. But if you want to spend most of your trip on those aforementioned beaches, we wouldn’t blame you a bit.

Stay here: On a hilltop overlooking a turquoise harbor, Rosewood Bermuda is the epitome of extravagance—there’s no better place to book if you want a trip of pure luxury and relaxation. The 92 rooms and suites are straight out of the pages of a design magazine, with crisp white linens on elegant four-poster beds, spa-like bathrooms with oversized soaking tubs, and large private balconies offering Atlantic views. You can also expect a championship-caliber golf course, several swimming pools, a full-service spa, and a private pink-sand beach in case you prefer your sunbathing with a side of exclusivity.

Cape May New Jersey

Cape May, New Jersey

There’s lots to love about Cape May. The town’s historic Victorian district is a perfect marriage of charm and history, and miles of intricate, candy-colored mansions make for prime early-morning-stroll viewing. And then there are the beaches. While the town itself has just over two miles of shoreline, you can find about 30 miles of white-sand, activity-packed beaches along the entire Jersey Cape. (Just note that everyone above the age of 12 must obtain a beach tag from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which can be purchased online .) Another big Cape May draw? Some of the best birdwatching in the country.

Stay here: The Blue Oasis beach house ( available on VRBO ) is one of our favorite small-town vacation rentals . The recently renovated home has four bedrooms and two spacious decks overlooking the water. It’s only a five-second walk from the back deck to the ocean, and you might even spot some humpback whales if you’re lucky (June to September are the true peak viewing months, but the entire season runs from March to December).

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho

There’s no wrong time to visit Yellowstone (yes, even in the dead of winter ), but this year marks the National Park’s 150th birthday —a great excuse to visit now if there ever was one. The landmark is a great one to explore by car, with most of the main attractions main attractions situated along the 142-mile Grand Loop Road. But if you want to dodge the crowds (and there most definitely will be crowds), pick one area and head off the main road along any of the 1,100 miles of trails. For example, you can head to the popular Mammoth Hot Springs and then try a moderate hike at the nearby Bunson Peak Trailhead; or see the Old Faithful geyser, then hop on the Mystic Falls Trailhead for a three-mile roundtrip hike to a 70-foot waterfall.

Stay here: A mere 10-minute drive from Yellowstone’s west entrance in Montana, Under Canvas Yellowstone is one of the best options for those who value location and convenience (and a whole lot of amenities) above all else. Each of the tents has a private deck, a private shower and toilet, and a wood-burning stove to keep warm when the sun goes down—plus, as with all Under Canvas properties, luxurious perks like organic bath products and West Elm furnishings.

Austin Texas

Rounding out our list of Memorial Day weekend getaways is Austin, a city that pulls out all the stops for the holiday—namely in the form of the Hot Luck Live Food & Music Festival (May 25–28). The festival is basically a combination of the city’s two favorite things: food and music. Dozens of local chefs will be cooking up some of their signature dishes (Aaron Franklin of Franklin’s Barbecue and Alon Shaya of Saba are two stand-outs), while DJ Jazzy Jeff and Superchunk will headline the musical performances. Even if you decide to skip the festival, Austin has enough breakfast tacos, hiking trails, line dancing, mezcal, and food trucks to keep you plenty busy all weekend.

Stay here: Just 10 minutes from downtown, Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection feels like a secret European escape with its English-style gardens and Italianate and Spanish Revival architecture. The rooms are bathed in custom pink wallpaper, vintage rugs, and soft velvet textiles, though the organic garden and swimming pool will certainly lure you outside. It’s the perfect spot to take a relaxed, meditative breath between jaunts into the city center.

Boca Chita Key at Biscayne National Park in FL

Biscayne National Park, Florida

Picture a sprawling saltwater bay full of psychedelic coral reefs, maze-like mangrove forests, quirky manatees, aquamarine water, and tropical islets. Are you picturing the Caribbean? Think again.  Biscayne National Park , on the southeastern edge of Florida, offers road trip access to sights typically seen on a far-flung island vacay. Schedule a  Sail, Paddle, Snorkel & Island Visit tour with Biscayne Bay Institute to soak up the best of the area’s history and scenery (trying to spot baby sharks and lobsters underwater). If you’ve got extra time, spend a day cruising down the sun-spattered  Overseas Highway to Key West and visit the historic  Hemingway Home .

Stay here:  To really take in that colorful Keys vibe that locals love to tout, stay at  Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection , and request a Bay Front Suite to sip your morning coffee as the sun’s glow hovers above the Atlantic surf. Or, if you’re feeling spendy, bed down at the ultra-romantic  Bungalows Key Largo , which boasts rows of private indoor/outdoor bungalows, porches with water views, and outdoor soaking tubs under the twinkling Milky Way.

Whidbey Island Deception Pass Washington

Whidbey Island, Washington

Just 30 miles north of Seattle sits Whidbey Island, the Pacific Northwest ’s answer to Nantucket. The 55-mile-long island is a mecca for outdoorsy folks, with enough water sports and hiking trails to plan an entire trip around—especially during late spring and early summer. To get a unique sense of space, book a tree-climbing excursion with AdventureTerra . With the help of ropes and a guide, climbers ascend the island’s Coastal Douglas Firs to reach the top of the forest canopy with a bird’s eye view of the famous Deception Pass Bridge and neighboring San Juan Islands.

Stay here: Originally built in 1907, the Captain Whidbey inn was rebooted in 2019—and it still remains our favorite place to stay on the island. The six-acre, 30-room property has its own private lagoon and dock, and the best way to arrive is by seaplane at dusk.

1873 Lighthouse Daufuskie Island South Carolina

Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

Daufuskie, a car-free historic island off Hilton Head, was once considered the Martha’s Vineyard of the South. It’s far more accessible now than in the past, and you can stay right on one of its beautiful beaches in either a converted mansion or an old lighthouse. Don’t leave before horseback riding on the beach, keeping an eye out for bottlenose dolphins somersaulting above the waves.

Stay here: Stay at the aforementioned 1873 Lighthouse at Haig Point, complete with two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound, plus access to the beach where you’ll never see more than a dozen people at one time.

Blue Lagoon

Iceland is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. While you can’t possibly see all of the country’s greatest hits in one long weekend, you can certainly get a good taste. Set up camp in Reykjavik, then rent a car and drive your way through the Golden Circle’s trio of iconic attractions: Thingvellir , Geysir, and Gullfoss.

Stay here: Iceland’s capital finally got the five-star hotel it deserves with the The Reykjavík Edition , a Hot List 2022 winner that opened about six months ago. The hotel is a mash-up of everything we love about Edition hotels with plenty of Icelandic flair: think an enormous undulating wall projection of the Northern Lights in the lobby, minibars stocked with local snacks, and a restaurant serving up Icelandic lamb loin and house-made coffee ice cream.

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki, Hawaii

With a large military population, Memorial Day is widely celebrated in Hawaii. Get a sampling of everything by staying near Waikiki Beach , a popular swim and surf destination that is only about 25 minutes away from Pearl Harbor by car. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial, pay tribute at the Remembrance Circle, and learn about the events of December 7, 1941, at interactive exhibits, then head back to the vibrant Waikiki community to shop, sunbathe, and relax.

Stay here: The retro-inspired Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is located right in the center of Waikiki, and offers artistic decor, an award-winning restaurant, and pool with custom tile spelling out “Wish You Were Here” at the bottom.

Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Ski season ends in Lake Tahoe after April, but the region still offers tons of great outdoor activities as the weather warms up. There really is something for everyone here, from hiking and biking to bird-watching and golf; or get on the water and explore the Lake Tahoe Water Trail , a 72-mile water route connecting public beaches with landing sites. For something extra special, take a “Lit Up After Dark” tour with Wild Society Adventures to experience the lake after dark from a clear-bottom kayak.

Stay here: North Lake Tahoe’s only waterfront resort, the Hyatt Regency , encourages outdoor play year-round, and new on-site adventure and wellness specialists can plan electric bike tours on the Tahoe East Shore Trail (great for sunset watching), painting classes among the pines, or morning meditations at the resort’s Water Garden.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 islands, the British Virgin Islands have no shortage of coastline to explore. To escape the crowds, seek out Sage Mountain, a notable landmark. Wandering among elephant ear vines and native trees, you’ll encounter tropical flora and fauna, while numerous lookouts offer views of sea and sky. Virgin Gorda is the third largest of the BVI, with natural beauty covering virtually all of its 8.5 square miles. The island offers quiet beaches and coves and flora-filled national parks. Perhaps the prettiest (and most popular) attraction, though, is the Baths, a seaside area where huge granite boulders form scenic saltwater pools and grottos.

Stay here: You can’t do better than Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, which reopened in early 2020 after a four-year renovation. You’ll be treated with a choice of 80 updated guest rooms, hiking trails across the island, and a new cliffside spa.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Colorado Springs

There are five military institutions in Colorado Springs, so Memorial Day weekend is always a city-wide celebration—and, as always, the beautiful scenery of Colorado is within easy reach. We’re still reeling with excitement from last year’s reopening of The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway , a 130-year-old train fresh off a multi-year, $100 million renovation. The railway is the highest in the country, taking guests above 14,000 feet to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Stay here: A favorite among our readers, The Broadmoor feels more like a grand hotel in the Alps than a domestic destination. Outdoor activities include horseback riding, golf, fly fishing, and hiking. (The 5,000-acre resort has its own waterfalls to make hiking even better.) This Memorial Day, be sure to order a pint of the Broadmoor’s own custom beer, the Prospector’s Pick Kolsch, which is made by a Veteran-owned brewery in Colorado Springs.

Niagara Canada

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

The Niagara Peninsula—a stretch of Ontario that borders the Great Lakes, about 90 minutes southeast of Toronto—offers hundreds of miles of scenic roads and waterways for the traveler who longs for some outdoor solitude. (In fact, this area is so serene, it seems almost impossible that Niagara Falls and the tens of millions of people who visit it every year are just a half hour down the road.) Anchor yourself in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake on the far east side of the region, then spend your days exploring. We suggest you rent a bike from Zoom Leisure and leisurely peddle along gorgeous lakes, waterfalls, and vineyards, and maybe even stop by a tasting room or two. Back in town, unwind at one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s excellent restaurants, wineries, or bakeries.

Stay here: If Victorian decor (without being fuddy-duddy, we should add) is your thing, Prince of Wales Hotel is the place for you. The hotel sits right on the main drag on Niagara-on-the-Lake, making it prime for those who’d prefer to stroll around rather than drive, while its British-inspired hospitality includes polite staff and afternoon tea service. The rooms feature floral wallpaper and four-poster beds, and amenities include an indoor pool, restaurant, lounge, and spa.

Cape May, New Jersey

People bike and walk in front of traditional villas in Cape May, New Jersey, on a sunny summer day.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of tourist season in Cape May , and it's no surprise why. A quintessential summertime escape for many Americans, this historic seaside town boasts pleasant temperatures in the 70s come late spring. Cape May also played a significant role in military defense during World War II. Just keep in mind that traffic jams are common – especially during the busy season – so be sure to plan your drive accordingly.

Travelers will enjoy stretching out along Cape May's beaches, strolling through the Washington Street Mall and admiring well-preserved Victorian architecture adjacent to the shoreline. You can also visit Emlen Physick Estate – the town's only Victorian-era house museum – or see historic war planes at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.

Where to stay: You won't find chain hotels in Cape May, but you can stay at a darling bed-and-breakfast, a boutique hotel like The Virginia Hotel & Cottages or a rental cottage.

New York City

Aerial of the Central Park in New York with golf fields and tall skyscrapers surrounding the park.

New York City is the perfect place for a last-minute, long-weekend trip – especially if you're car-free. Pack your walking shoes and plan to visit one world-class site after another on foot or by subway. Must-see attractions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and – of course – Times Square. May is also one of New York's most pleasant times of year (if you don't mind a chance of rain). Expect daytime highs in the upper 60s, perfect for a stroll through Central Park or along the High Line.

Special Memorial Day events include the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade and Fleet Week, when civilians can tour naval ships and meet members of the U.S. Navy, the Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. New York City beaches also open to the public on this weekend. When it's time to dine, you'll find an endless list of establishments, from historic bagel shops to under-the-radar delis to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Where to stay: You can find all kinds of lodging options in New York – just be sure to book early, as rates can get expensive. One top option is The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel in Manhattan.

Annapolis, Maryland

Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, in the evening.

Travelers looking to pay tribute to military men and women this Memorial Day can do so in the waterfront city of Annapolis . Get outside to watch the Memorial Day Parade down Main Street, or stroll through the rest of Annapolis' historic downtown, where you're bound to see rows of American flags.

If you're looking for a bit more space to stretch out, head to Quiet Waters Park. Spanning 340 acres, the park is ideal for biking, kayaking, picnicking or simply admiring panoramic views of the South River in late May's pleasant temperatures (high 70s to 80s). Bicycle and boat rentals are available on-site and nearby. When hunger strikes, head to Boatyard Bar & Grill or Carrol's Creek Cafe for delicious seafood.

Where to stay: Accommodation options in Annapolis range from modern outposts like Graduate Annapolis to picturesque bed-and-breakfasts to vacation rentals downtown or near the water.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Winter sunrise in Dewey Beach, Delaware.

Ring in the start of summer on the shores of Rehoboth Beach . Calm waters and temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s make this Delaware beach town a great kid-friendly option, and travelers of all ages will enjoy walking down the mile-long boardwalk filled with restaurants and shops.

When you're not sunbathing on the sand or relaxing on the balcony of your vacation rental or hotel room, head to Cape Henlopen State Park to fish, hike and bird-watch. The Funland amusement park is another staple in the area that opens for the season in May, and some shopping at Tanger Outlets is a must when you need a break from outdoor activities.

Where to stay: The Avenue Inn and Spa , located a block from the beach and boardwalk, is a top lodging option in Rehoboth Beach.

Washington, D.C.

The White House and Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C.

On the National Mall, wander along the long granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to read the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died during the Vietnam War. Then, head to the World War II Memorial to pay tribute to those who perished on the battlefields. Average May temperatures in the nation's capital tend to sit in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Austin, Texas

Aerial of river and greenery with Austin skyline in the background.

Visit the Lone Star State for an authentic Memorial Day weekend experience, complete with mouthwatering Texas barbecue, temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and plenty of time spent enjoying the great outdoors. Austin offers something for everyone, from kayaking in Zilker Metropolitan Park (rental boats are available on-site) to learning about the state's history at the Texas Capitol in central Austin. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake is another beloved natural area where travelers and locals alike can explore quiet trails and picnic along the edge of the water.

Where to stay: Bed down at a hotel like The Driskill , an Airbnb or even a campsite in nearby Texas Hill Country.

Charleston, South Carolina

The Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain in Charleston, South Carolina, at sunset.

Cobblestone streets, centuries-old oak trees and historic architecture make Charleston a charming getaway year-round. But visiting during Memorial Day weekend means you'll see the city at its best (albeit usually its busiest) before the oppressive summer heat sets in. Average May temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s, rain is minimal, and colorful gardens are in full bloom.

Learn about the history of the city as you cruise through the Charleston Harbor on a boat tour , or admire the flora and fauna of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. If your holiday weekend experience won't be complete without a beach trip, head to nearby Folly Beach (a little more than 10 miles south of the city) or Sullivan's Island (less than 10 miles southeast) for a day.

Where to stay: Retire for the evening at a luxurious hotel , such as The Spectator Hotel, or stay in one of many quaint vacation rentals to save some cash.

Big Bear Lake, California

Reflections in the waters of Big Bear Lake at Boulder Bay, California, with vacations houses and mountain ridges in the background.

By late May, travelers can typically bid farewell to snowfall in Big Bear Lake and say hello to pleasant temperatures in the low 70s. Located in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, about 80 miles northwest of Palm Springs, laid-back Big Bear Lake separates itself from typical long-weekend beach destinations with its endless outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and paddleboarding. Canoes, kayaks and other equipment rentals are available from a bevy of local sports shops dispersed throughout Big Bear Lake. Although there are a few small swimming beaches on the lake, including Meadow Park, keep in mind that the water is fairly chilly year-round.

Where to stay: When it comes to lodging, take your pick from multiple resorts, inns, vacation homes, cabins and lodges. One top option downtown is Sierra Blue Hotel & Swim Club. If you plan to travel with your pet , Big Bear Lakefront Cabins offers pet-friendly cabins with amenities like hot tubs and swimming pools overlooking the lake or lush mountains.

Colorado flags hanging in Larimer Square, Denver.

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Denver to enjoy the city's 70-degree weather, as long as you're willing to put up with a little rain (May is typically the city's wettest month, seeing about 2 inches of rainfall on average). Travelers can wander through the Denver Botanic Gardens or explore Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, a naturally formed outdoor venue with on-site hiking trails. If you're looking for a great place to bring kids, head to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which boasts exhibits about animals, mummies and outer space, all in one venue.

Where to stay: As far as lodging goes, vacationers will have their pick of swanky options such as The Oxford Hotel and airy rental lofts in the heart of downtown.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Though temperatures are typically still creeping their way into the mid-60s come Memorial Day, visiting Jackson Hole during this shoulder season promises exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities (think: eagles, bison and moose), cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds to contend with. Spring also signals the reopening of many park roadways in the nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, as well as the start of whitewater rafting season. Granite Hot Springs Pool reopens for the summer season in late May, so travelers can plan on taking a dip in the steamy 93-degree thermal pool after a fun day of hiking and exploring.

Where to stay: Opt for a rustic cabin to fully embrace Jackson Hole's changing seasons in the wilderness, or pump up the opulence with a stay at a luxury resort such as Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa at Jackson Hole .

Aerial of the Las Vegas Strip at twilight.

Kick off the unofficial start of summer with a trip to Sin City. For an adults-only getaway, travelers can hit the slots, party the night away at a high-energy nightclub or live music venue, and enjoy a few cocktails under the sun at one of Las Vegas ' rowdy pool parties. Late May temperatures typically feature highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s.

Beyond walking around the Strip, popular things to do include visiting the Sphere (a unique new attraction opened in 2023) and taking day trips to more family-friendly outdoor destinations, such as the Grand Canyon , the Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You can also consider a Las Vegas tour ; fun options range from open-top nighttime bus tours around the city to scenic helicopter rides to food tours sampling a variety of treats.

Where to stay: You can't go wrong with any of the city's iconic resorts or themed hotels if you're looking for the full Vegas experience. Still, some properties, such as the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas , offer a little more tranquility than others.

Palm Springs, California

Brightly colored flowers along the water at a golf course in Palm Springs, California.

Trendy, colorful Palm Springs is an ideal spot for a Memorial Day weekend getaway. Springtime brings picturesque blooms of wildflowers, poppies and lilies, and visitors can enjoy popular attractions like the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. You'll also have plenty of time for a round at the golf course, boutique shopping in the El Paseo Shopping District, and mouthwatering meals and cocktails at top-notch eateries .

To honor fallen soldiers over the holiday weekend, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum for its annual Memorial Day Flower Drop. At this event, a vintage warbird plane drops more than 3,000 carnations to the crowds below. While you might avoid Palm Springs ' roasting summer temperatures above 100 degrees, you should still expect May highs in the 90s – so plan accordingly for a hike through Joshua Tree National Park or other outdoor activities.

Where to stay: Most of the city's eclectic hotels, inns and bungalows offer on-site pools to cool off in – and the highly rated Holiday House Palm Springs is no exception.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Although this month might bring the occasional rain shower, hotel rates and dissipating crowds during this shoulder season make Memorial Day weekend a great time to visit. Vacationers can check out the tourist hot spot of Providenciales (known as Provo) to enjoy snorkeling and fishing. Provo is home to gorgeous white sand beaches, including Grace Bay Beach, and it's a great spot for water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding.

Where to stay: Stay at a resort like Seven Stars Resort & Spa to take advantage of abundant amenities, or opt for a villa rental near the beach for more privacy.

Tulum, Mexico

NPR's Leila Fadel talks to Mary Lovely, senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics, about Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit to China.

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is finishing a trip to China, where she's managed to become a favorite on Chinese social media. Posts with the secretary masterfully using chopsticks have been viewed millions of times there. But has the secretary's popularity online translated to success for the actual purpose of her trip, trade talks? For more on Yellen's visit and relations between the world's two largest economies, we're joined by Mary Lovely. She's a senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Good morning, Mary.

MARY LOVELY: Good morning.

FADEL: Thanks for being on the program. So there are a lot of competing U.S. and Chinese interests over goods like electric vehicles, solar panels, as well as national security concerns related to the economy. So I want to start with listening to what Yellen said to the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, yesterday.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

JANET YELLEN: I believe that, over the past year, we've put our bilateral relationship on a more stable footing.

FADEL: Mary, does that strike you as true, and does Yellen's trip further destabilize the relationship?

LOVELY: Well, that's an interesting question. I believe it is true that the U.S. and China talking at the highest levels of government is extremely important to not just stabilizing the relationship, but trying to reduce conflict, so I think it's important. It doesn't mean that many problems have been solved. It's an attempt by both sides to begin to solve some problems, I think. And has her trip destabilized it? No, I don't see that it has.

FADEL: Were there any breakthroughs with this trip?

LOVELY: Well, I think the mission is - was not so much to have a breakthrough as to warn the Chinese. It seems as though the Biden administration is teeing up more trade restrictions against China. And in particular, we're talking about so-called new energy products - EVs, solar panels, batteries. And there might have been some attempt to, you know, negotiate with the Chinese to get them to restrain, in some way, their exports, but it doesn't seem like anything like that has happened. So it can be seen as an attempt by the administration to avoid tariffs and settle this in a different way.

FADEL: Now, Yellen went to China with a big message, which is that China is overproducing and flooding the market with cheap products, as the administration puts it, and that hurts local production here. How was that message received on her trip?

LOVELY: Well, China has admitted that it has a problem with overcapacity, certainly in the past on steel and cement. And more recently, it was discussed at the work program last December. So at the highest levels of the Chinese Communist Party, they have admitted that there are - overcapacity.

I think where the Chinese and the U.S. most clearly disagree is in electric vehicles. China has become a strong exporter of those vehicles, as is - Europe. The U.S. is far behind, exporting about a tenth of what China and the United - and Europe export each month. But these EVs are, in some sense, a threat to the future. So as the Biden administration and the United States in general has invested in transitioning its auto sector toward EVs, it's important that those, you know, green shoots have a chance to take off.

And there's a fear that Chinese companies lack the basic profit-based motive of when they build too much, inventory builds up, they pull back production. Instead, as we've seen in other industries in the past, China keeps pumping out more product.

FADEL: Really quickly, before I let you go, Yellen's making this visit right before a presidential election, meaning they - China might not be see - dealing with the same man soon or could be dealing with the same man. Does that affect her trip?

LOVELY: Yes, I think it does. I think the Chinese don't really know, if they cut a deal, if it will hold. President Trump has certainly argued for much more draconian restrictions against China.

FADEL: That's Mary Lovely, a senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Thank you so much.

LOVELY: You're welcome.

Sunday is Tia Mowry’s favorite day of the week because it’s the day that she gets to do whatever she wants.

“With my career, there’s always some sort of schedule,” the actor and entrepreneur said. But on Sundays, “it’s just really free-flowing. I mean, yes, there are some routines and traditions that we have on Sunday, but it’s not a strict schedule.”

Mowry has been lighting up our TV screens since her debut on the beloved ‘90s sitcom “Sister, Sister” alongside her twin sister, Tamera. Since then, Mowry has picked up several other notable roles on shows and films like “The Game,” “Twitches” and “Family Reunion.” She also starred in a Style Network reality show about her and her sister’s lives called “ Tia & Tamera ,” released two cookbooks and launched 4u by Tia , a sustainable, science-backed hair care line for natural hair.

In Sunday Funday, L.A. people give us a play-by-play of their ideal Sunday around town. Find ideas and inspiration on where to go, what to eat and how to enjoy life on the weekends.

The latest venture for the mom of two? Mowry is heading back to reality television to star in WEtv’s “Tia Mowry: My Next Act,” a show about her post-divorce life. “I’m removing the filter like never before,” she wrote on Instagram .

An Army kid born in Germany and raised in multiple parts of the U.S., Mowry said she loves Los Angeles — where she’s lived for more than 30 years — because of the city’s emphasis on wellness. “There’s always some sort of healthy grocery store or smoothie spot or juicing spot [or] great, trendy exercise program all within one block of each other, which is just so beneficial especially when you are a mom,” she said.

Mowry’s ideal Sunday in L.A. involves playtime with her kids (Cairo is 5 and Cree is 12), sweating it out at Equinox and dinner at her favorite pasta spot. Here’s how she’d spend the day.

This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for length and clarity.

6 a.m.: Meditate, journal and read

The first thing that I do when I wake up is meditate. I literally put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on my door and the kids know. They are 12 and 5. Even the 5-year-old knows not to walk into Mommy’s room when that sign is on and her door is closed. I will meditate for an hour on the weekend.

I’m up at 6 a.m. because I have to get it in before the kids wake up at 7:25 a.m. I don’t know why it’s 7:25 a.m. [Laughs] Then I will do some journaling. I have this really cool manifestation journal where I write down my manifesto every single day and answer some questions. It takes about five minutes. Then I will do about 15 to 20 minutes of reading every Sunday. I just finished reading “Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself.” It’s by an amazing Black woman named Nedra Glover Tawwab . She’s a psychologist and this is an incredible book.

Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph of ‘Abbott Elementary’ likes to spend Sundays with her adult children doing yoga, eating ice cream and going to the movies.

7:25 a.m.: Fun time with the kids

Once I’m done with that, the kids will come in and then they’re playing around, jumping on my bed and it is just fun time. We spend about an hour in my bed just hanging out, giving kisses and cuddles. And of course between the two of them, it’s not always pleasant [laughs]. There might be some back-and-forth between the kids, and some “ Mommmmm ” [imitates in agitated kid voice]. Then we’re maybe watching “ Avatar ” or “ Bluey .” Basically whoever grabs the remote first, that’s what we’re watching.

9 a.m.: Order in or go out for breakfast

We will sometimes order food on Postmates or we’ll walk to our favorite restaurant. It’s called Le Pain Quotidien . It’s a French breakfast spot. I always order my favorite drink, which is the matcha latte with vanilla extract and oat milk. I usually get the three-egg scramble, which comes with a green salad. And then Cairo will have the pancakes with bananas and extra syrup, and Cree will get a chai latte with oat milk and avocado toast.

I’ve tried everything on that menu. The waiters know us there. And like I said, sometimes I’ll take the kids and we’ll walk. Cree will get on his bike, I will put Cairo in a wagon and we’re off.

trip for day

11 a.m. Drop the kids off and go to gym

We’ll come home around 11 a.m., then the kids will hang out at the house. They are either hanging out with grandpa, grandma or uncle Tahj Mowry, and I will go off to my favorite gym, Equinox . I feel like where I’m at right now in my life, it’s not about that intense workout where you’re just so drained after. It’s more about just moving the body. So I will do maybe 20 minutes of a nice walk on the treadmill, then I’ll do another 20 minutes on the Stairmaster. After that, I’ll maybe do a little bit of floor Pilates and some stretching, and that’s it. The steam room is one of my favorite things to do right after a workout. That’s how you know you’re getting older [laughs].

You know, just really, really take care of yourself and fill up your cup, so that you will be able to pour into your children, your work life, your friends and all of that. So that’s like a must.

2:30 p.m. Grocery shopping at Erewhon

I’ll come back home and freshen up, then I’ll head out to do some grocery shopping. Sometimes the kids will join me; sometimes they won’t. Cree usually loves to join me because he loves food. I will go to Erewhon . I know some people say it’s this bougie grocery spot, but I’ve actually been going there for years before it was even popular.

Grocery shopping is kind of like my zen place. I will go through the recipes in my cookbook, “ The Quick Fix Kitchen ” or my other cookbook, “ Whole New You ,” and choose what we’re going to have that week. Then I’ll get everything that we need. I always like to have something planned so I’m not scrambling. I’ll grab some essentials, then come home and unpack. As you can see Sundays are clearly a day that I’m not doing too much cooking cause it’s a chill day.

My favorite smoothie at Erewhon is the Royal Defense 13, which basically just has protein, berries and apple juice. It comes with bananas but I have an allergy, so I usually just get it without and it is so good. I like to keep it very simple.

trip for day

5:00 p.m. Dinner at Uovo

One of our favorite things to do is go to a pasta spot called Uovo . The reason we go all the time is because Cairo is obsessed with pasta. If she can eat pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner, she would. What’s so great about this spot is — ‘cause I’m a foodie — is it’s simple but good, meaning it’s not this huge, massive menu. And they make their pasta fresh. It’s intimate and the waiters know us too. It’s kid-friendly, but it’s also a great environment for adults as well.

Cairo and I love the pasta with the truffle and Parmesan cheese, and Cree loves the beef ravioli. It’s nice to end the day with a nice glass of wine and everyone is full of pasta.

6:30 p.m. Get ice cream for dessert

Uovo only has tiramisu for dessert and the kids always want ice cream, so we’ll go to Salt & Straw . When it opened up, I was so incredibly excited. What I love about it is that it’s unique. The combinations are something that you’ve never heard of, like lavender. It’s not your traditional flavors that you would expect in ice cream, which I think is such an incredible experience and the kids love it.

trip for day

7:00 p.m. Get the kids ready for bed

We’re home by 7 p.m. Cree is able to put himself to bed, thank God. [As for] Cairo, I will read her a book and give her a bath. She has her whole routine — she’s so spoiled. She has white noise going and an air purifier with a scent in it. She gets a massage every night. She’s the princess. Then they’re off to bed.

8 p.m. Listen to affirmations until I fall asleep

I will take my shower and do all that kind of stuff, then go to bed [listening] to affirmations. That’s kind of been my new thing. I’m really trying to get enough sleep throughout the night and so I’m in bed at around 9 or 9:30 p.m.

She's from Green Bay. He's from the United Kingdom. On their wedding day, they went head over heels at Kwik Trip.

trip for day

GREEN BAY - When James McKenzie-Brown came to Wisconsin from the United Kingdom, he didn’t just fall head over heels for Pati Holschbach.

He fell in love with  Kwik Trip , too.

It was Holschbach first, mind you, and the popular Wisconsin-based convenience store chain second. That’s important to note in a love story that spans 3,903 miles, two and half years and countless Big Buddy fountain drinks.

When it came to their wedding day on March 29, it just seemed right that it was all three of them — a nurse from Green Bay, an armed police officer from London and Kwik Trip store No. 827 on Lombardi Avenue — together in their photos.

Love, Wisconsin style.

To appreciate the sweetness of the photo shoot, at a gas station on the happiest day of their lives, you have to first get to know the couple.

“To tell people our story of how we began, if anybody else would tell me this story, it would sound kind of, I would say, crazy,” Holschbach said.

The two met on Tinder. She was living in Milwaukee at the time and had the distance for potential matches on the dating app set to within 80 miles. He was in Twickenham, just outside London, and had his set to 10 miles. There were 3,903 miles and a whole big pond between them. Their profiles should never have crossed paths but somehow they did.

Love works in mysterious ways.

Within 24 hours, they were talking. Eighteen days later, on Dec. 8, 2021, he flew to Wisconsin to see her. From the moment they said hello to one another, it felt different.

“We both just knew,” Holschbach said.

They felt incredibly comfortable around each other and discovered they had similar senses of humor. They had both chosen the careers they did, because they wanted to help people. They both enjoyed going to estate sales and looking for antiques.

“But one of the things that really attracted me to him and him to me was we both absolutely love animals, like we’re obsessed with dogs and cats,” she said. “We’re the kind of people where anytime we see a dog, we have to point it out, like it’s our first time seeing a dog.”

It was Holschbach’s elderly 15-year-old rescue pitbull, Minnie, who sealed the deal. An excellent judge of character but leery of men due to her past, the first thing she did when McKenzie-Brown came to visit was climb right into his lap and snuggle in.

“She wouldn’t even climb in my lap and I was her mom,” Holschbach said. “Then I just instantly knew. ‘Yep, this is the one.’”

They were engaged on April 13, 2022 — four months and five days after they met.

Big Buddy drinks are their go-to, but you can't beat the fried chicken

Before they could marry, they had to secure a K-1 visa , which allows a U.S. citizen to bring a fiancé or fiancée to the country for the purpose of marriage and becoming a lawful permanent resident. It was a process that stretched across nearly two years and required many back-and-forth trips.

That’s where Kwik Trip enters the story.

McKenzie-Brown found himself “enthralled with all that is Midwest culture” whenever he came to visit. Potluck staples — can’t-miss fare like walking tacos, scotcheroos, Snickers salad and especially beer dip — fascinated him. Being from the U.K., where people love nothing more than to talk about the weather, he also appreciated Wisconsin’s four seasons, sometimes all in the same week, as a goldmine of conversation.

More local flavor YouTuber Nick Johnson spent 3 days in Green Bay, discovered a 'uniquely American' city, super nice people, lots cheese

Holschbach grew up in Green Bay and graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1996. She was well acquainted with the joys of Kwik Trip and its status as a Wisconsin institution. She knew her future husband had to experience it for himself.

“He was like, ‘You want to take me to a gas station?’” she said. “I’m like, ‘Yes! But you just wait, you just wait.’”

He was immediately smitten. He loved it all, from the feeling that he had just walked into a little city all onto itself to the signature “see ya next time” from the clerk on his way out the door.

During the couple’s many trips back and forth to the airport or on the drive up to Green Bay to see Holschbach’s parents, Kwik Trips became a part of their lives. Their go-to is the Big Buddy fountain soda, but the Glazers doughnuts, Cinnabon cinnamon roll-flavored cappuccinos and the cheesy chicken casserole are also among their favorites.

“And you can’t beat their fried chicken,” Holschbach said. “Their fried chicken is really good.”

After the ceremony at the Brown County Courthouse, it was off to Kwik Trip on Lombardi Avenue

One of the conditions of being issued a K-1 visa is that once the fiancé comes to the United States, the couple has just 90 days to get married. That makes planning a large, elaborate wedding nearly impossible, so Holschbach and McKenzie-Brown opted for a small, intimate ceremony with family and a few friends.

There were two things they knew they wanted to be part of the day.

One was a hand-tied bridal bouquet of five dozen white carnations from Petal Pusher Floral Boutique in the Broadway District. Holschbach had worked for owner Nichole Campbell years ago and adored that same bouquet Petal Pusher had created for a wedding expo. She never forgot it.

The other was to have photos taken at Kwik Trip by Erika Krause Photography . Holschbach has known her for 14 years, ever since she was the labor and delivery nurse assigned to the birth of her second child at Aurora BayCare and then again for her third child. Krause was excited to do her first bride-and-groom-at-Kwik Trip photo session.

More: 'See ya next time': How a neighborhood grocery store grew into today's Kwik Trip phenomenon

After the couple exchanged vows in a civil ceremony at the Brown County Courthouse, they headed to a Kwik Trip, where the employee in charge told them not only was it OK to shoot photos inside the store but that it happens all the time.

“They were just the nicest bunch of people,” Holschbach said.

They even gave them a complimentary doughnut as a prop. There are shots of the happy couple with intertwined arms with Big Buddy cups, sharing a smooch in one of the aisles and standing by a cooler door that reads “Cold Beer Enter Here.”

Two of their favorites portraits were taken outside, with Holschbach’s bouquet and McKenzie-Brown’s mini Union Jack flag outshone only by the smiles on their faces.

You might be wondering if there was a Kwik Trip-themed wedding dinner with fancy three-tiered plates of Glazers, platters of fried chicken and barbecue pork rib sandwiches and baskets of reasonably priced bananas. There was not. They did their dining at Italian restaurant Angelina in downtown Green Bay.

Years from now, when they look back at the photographs taken at store No. 827, what might they think?

“I’m sure we’ll probably say, ‘Oh my God, we really had our pictures taken at a gas station.' But that’s just part of our personality,” Holschbach said. “We’ll just more so, I think, remember it for how much fun it was and just how happy everyone was and how supportive they were. It was a great day. It was a very joyous day ... and that’s conveyed in the pictures.”

The couple, who just moved to Kimberly, already know how they’ll celebrate their anniversary each year: a fountain drink at Kwik Trip and dinner at Angelina.

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

trip for day

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity.

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic."

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

‘20 or 30 Super Bowls.’ Drivers and Officials Brace for Massive Eclipse Traffic Jams

M elissa Schleig, a postmaster who lives in Strasburg, Virginia, drove more than 400 miles southwest to the Smoky Mountains to see the 2017 solar eclipse. The travel experience was miserable.

“It should have taken us about six to seven hours to go down there but it took us about a little over six hours just to go about two hours south of here. It was insane,” said Schleig, who began to drive down the day before the eclipse.

At least 5 million people traveled for the 2017 eclipse, according to a journal by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, but even more are expected to gather to witness this year’s total solar eclipse on April 8. Already, an estimated 31.6 million people currently live in the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality —compared to the 12 million that did in 2017.

“Having a total solar eclipse pass through the U.S. is kind of like having 20 or 30 Super Bowls happening all at once,” says Richard Fienberg, project manager of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force. “So many people are gathering for the spectacle over a long distance.”

Transportation agencies are coordinating with the National Weather Service to spot areas of high interest for eclipse viewing to better prepare for traffic delays, but they say the impacts are unavoidable. “The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) knows that there is great interest in this rare solar event, and that’s why we want everyone to be aware of the real traffic and safety impacts,” FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt told TIME in an email. “We want people to remember this day and this experience—that may be once in a lifetime—for all the right reasons.”

This year Schleig, who is part of a Facebook eclipse chasing group, is traveling to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls to view the eclipse. And she’s hoping to learn from her 2017 mistakes: she’s planning to avoid the traffic by extending her trip from April 4 through the 10th, instead of driving the day before like she did last time.

How bad will traffic be?

The FHWA says Schleig has the right idea. It is advising people to drive early, and stay longer in the town where they’re viewing the eclipse to avoid traffic. The FHWA says it's hard to predict which cities or states will be most impacted by the eclipse traffic-wise, but they predict up to 5 million people will be traveling to the path of totality between Texas and Maine.

While drivers and officials are looking to the 2017 eclipse for hints of what is to come, traffic will likely be much worse this time. That’s because the 2024 path of totality—the area where the moon will completely obscure the sun—is a 3-hour drive away from 8 major cities with a population greater than 2 million, including Chicago, Houston, and Toronto. By contrast, the 2017 eclipse path of totality was a 3-hour drive away from only three larger metropolitan areas: St. Louis, Kansas City, and Portland, Ore.

If the expected 5 million visitors were to leave the path of totality as soon as the eclipse ends, the ensuing traffic would be equivalent to 71 sold out football games ending all at once, according to a journal by the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Where are people traveling?

Several eclipse chasers, like 62-year-old photographer Beth Hutter, told TIME that they were planning to travel to Texas because it has the lowest chance of cloud cover. “We didn't want to take a chance that the day of the eclipse it [would be] overcast and rainy,” said Hutter, who is traveling from Michigan to Kileen, Texas five days before the eclipse. “We made the mistake of trying to drive home the same day [for the 2017 eclipse]... So thankfully, because we're going to be right there, I don't think we're going to have to deal with the traffic nightmares that most people are going to have.”

Texas Department of Transportation media relations director Adam Hammons says that up to one million out-of-state visitors may be traveling to view the eclipse, in addition to the millions that already live in the state and will likely also be driving to different areas/cities.

Hammons says the eclipse runs through I-35, which is a significant corridor in the state that traverses through small towns as well as larger metro areas like Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth. “It really goes through a large portion of Texas,” he says. “There’s going to be some possible significant delays on these major corridors and/or farm roads…Give yourself extra travel time. Plan ahead your trip, plan your route,” Drivetexas.org, a website that shares real-time traffic updates, could be helpful in deciding which way to go.

Regardless of where you choose to see the eclipse, Hammons says it's important to have a safe, designated place to park and enjoy the experience—as long as it's off the shoulder of the highway.

Other states like Arkansas, which has a population of some 3 million people , could see anywhere from 300,000 to 1.5 million visitors. (State officials have cited varying estimates .) The most extreme traffic will be seen along AR Highway 70 to Benton, AR Highway 65 from Conway to Greenbrier, and more. "There’s no doubt our Interstates and highways could be tested," Arkansas Department of Transportation Director Lorie H. Tudor told TIME in a statement, "but we have put forth our best planning efforts and we are cautiously optimistic that we are as prepared as possible to address any foreseeable issues that may arise."

New York is another state expecting a high volume of visitors and traffic. Many residents and out-of-state visitors will be traveling to the western and northern regions of the state, with Niagara Falls being an area of high interest. "We are expecting as many as a million people to come to Erie County solely for the eclipse," says Peter Anderson, press secretary for the Erie County executive, where Niagara Falls is based. According to data collected by Priceline and shared with TIME, Buffalo, New York has the second highest average airfare price compared to the travel cost to seven cities along the path of totality— including Dallas, Indianapolis, and Cleveland—at $999, and the most expensive average nightly hotel room cost among those cities listed at $476.

Still, for many of the eclipse watchers, braving bad traffic will be worth it. “It's just one of those things where you just realize your place in the world, and how small you are in comparison to the rest of the universe,” says Hutter. “The world just kind of stops.”

Jill Zarin blamed “Below Deck” head steward Fraser Olender for her “disaster” megayacht outing, which was documented on an episode of the Bravo series last week.

The “Real Housewives of New York City” alum said she didn’t have any regrets about her behavior, which included taking issue with the food service, requesting a specific type of ice and even suggesting guests be given a bell to summon crew members.

“I went into it with the attitude that I want to make a good show. I was me, I literally was me. I was me the way I am in my real life,” Zarin, 60, told Heather McDonald on Tuesday’s episode of her  “Juicy Scoop” podcast .

Jill Zarin

“If I like my Diet Coke then I want another. If I don’t like it then I will send it back. If I don’t like my food then I send it back. Most people do,” she continued.

“I think if the crew had a different attitude toward me and said ‘Jill, she’s a little pushy, she’s a Jewish mother, she’s a little bit of a know it all’ I think everybody would have leaned into it.”

The reality TV star went on to detail the two-day stay, which cost her pal an eye-watering $45,000 for “five meals” along with lodging.

“You get on the boat at 12 and right away you get lunch,” she said. “You get an explanation — which I actually taped on my phone that I am going to post — of Fraser [Olender] explaining the layout of the next two days.”

Zarin continued, “In fact, one of the things he emphasized which is ironic is that there would be snacks and food all the time everywhere. He actually emphasized and completely didn’t deliver. When I think about the trip, it was the head stew’s job to make sure things went seamlessly, and I kind of blame him for the trip being a total disaster.”

The Bravolebrity noted that she “felt terrible” for her friends who paid for the trip.

“They spent an enormous amount of money [and] I wanted them to have an amazing experience,” she said.

“I did this show because my friends wanted to go on TV. I don’t blame them, a lot of people do. [But] I didn’t mind doing it with them because as long as I am me, I am good.”

“Below Deck” cast member and stewardess, Barbara “Barbie” Pascual, later admitted Zarin “was right” about some of her seemingly outlandish requests on the show.

Jill Zarin

“You guys, I watched the show back, and I don’t think that Jill was as bad as it looked, and I just wanna also say that there were so many other moments where she was super fun and sweet and nice,” Pascual said on her Instagram Story last week.

She acknowledged that the former “Housewife” was “demanding,” but she was “not rude” and was making requests that were “actually normal yacht requirements” and “pretty logical.”

“She was right. She just wanted nugget ice in her Diet Coke, that’s not a big deal,” the stewardess added.

However, during the episode, Pascual said Zarin was “too much” to handle.

“I think she’s annoying. You’re a freeloading guest who’s extremely demanding. This is too much for me. I need another stew just for Jill,” she said in a confessional.

Meanwhile, Olender quipped, “Jill is crawling into my brain and eating away at my soul.”

Chef Anthony Iracane also took a swipe at the Jill & Ally founder in his confessional.

“I think the primary, she’s OK, but her friend taking over the boat, it’s like she’s a f–king captain. Like taking over the ship,” he said.

“Below Deck” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo
