No matter where you're traveling in the world, you'll want to take some of those memories back with you. And if you love capturing them on Instagram , you're in luck. Condé Nast Traveller India spoke to some of the best travel creators in South Asia—including Larissa D’sa , Wander with Sky’s Aakash Malhotra , Savi and Vid of Bruised Passports, Siddhartha Joshi , and Revati and Charles Victor of Different Doors—for their tips on creating travel Reels for Instagram and putting your best foot forward on the Explore page. Here is your ultimate guide to making the next viral travel Reel.

How do you start making a travel Reel for Instagram?

Malhotra begins with a clear-cut plan when making a Reel. “When crafting a compelling travel Reel, there are five key principles to bear in mind,” he says. “Prioritize high-quality footage and unique perspectives. Weave a narrative: Keep it personal and authentic. Emotions over beauty: Capture the essence of the locale. Audio is king: Choose complementary soundtracks. And lastly, timing matters: Share high-resolution content within the optimal timeframe.”

Savi and Vid stress that the video needs to be representative of the experience you are having or want viewers to have: “Be it a place you’re traveling to or somewhere you’re dining ! It needs to be impactful. If you can capture the audience within the first half, then that’s a sure-shot winner. Trending music is a no-brainer.”

For D’sa, it needs to feel authentic and real. “I have to keep it authentic, else it's not me,” she says. “Going viral should never be the reason to make a Reel. When you are truly enjoying yourself in a video, it shows. And that joy is infectious. Even though the quality of the video is of utmost importance, having fun and looking beyond trends is the key.”

Revati and Charles suggest being clear on what you are trying to communicate. “Some useful information ? A beautiful view? It’s then easier to make decisions while shooting, rather than ending up with a lot of footage that you don’t really like or can use.” They also recommend being the face of your Reel. “Don’t be afraid or shy to get in front of the camera! And talk. People love listening to people and seeing their faces to be able to put a face to the voice.”

What equipment do you use to make a travel Reel?

“When it comes to crafting cinematic Reels, my go-to gear includes the iPhone 14 Pro,” says Malhotra. However, he also relies on a versatile array of equipment to elevate his content. “I use the Sony Alpha ZV-E1 for vlogs, accompanied by a selection of lenses tailored to specific needs. The DJI Mavic 3 takes care of breathtaking aerial shots, while the DJI Avata provides wide-angle drone shots. In addition, my trusty GoPro HERO 12 swoops in to capture all the action.”

D’sa says, “95% of my Reels are shot on camera. But an iPhone camera is good enough to start.” While Savi and Vid use a full-frame camera, their phones, and a tripod to make their Reels with a multi-camera setup. Joshi also uses his iPhone camera to film most videos.

For Revati and Charles, it depends on the situation at hand. “Our trusted Sony a7R III camera is for when we need stellar footage." An iPhone camera works for easy shots; a Hollyland Lark Wireless Microphone for clear voice-overs, and to talk over distances.

Malhotra says, “If you're embarking on your journey as a travel Reel creator on Instagram, you'll be pleased to know that an iPhone is your all-in-one solution. In fact, it's the only equipment I believe you truly need.” Revati and Charles add, “The best camera is the one you already have and know how to use ! It’s simple, shoots some great footage and doesn’t have a steep learning curve. There are people who’ve shot such fabulous films with just their phones!”

Savi and Vid suggest you add a portable ring light to your kit to make closeup shots look instantly better.

Which apps or software do you use to edit videos?

“To fine-tune my masterpieces, I turn to a variety of editing tools. On my laptop, I rely on Final Cut Pro for comprehensive edits. When on the move, VN Video Editor is my choice for mobile editing, and I also harness the native Instagram Reels tab for those final touches,” says Malhotra.

Joshi also suggests the VN Video Editor app for edits on the go: “For those just starting out, simplicity is the key to success. You can accomplish most of your edits using the Instagram app itself. Remember, consistency is the linchpin of growth. Begin there, and venture into more advanced editing techniques as you go.”

For Savi and Vid, Adobe Premiere Pro takes the cake. “I enjoy playing around with fonts, grading, and colors. There are countless phone-friendly apps like InShot and Filmm that are great for beginners or for established creators to edit on the go.” D’sa uses Premiere Pro on her laptop too, but she prefers InShot for on-phone editing. “Though it might sound time-consuming, I would always recommend learning desktop-based software before one on a phone. That truly makes learning the process on the phone quicker. I personally started with Adobe Premiere on my laptop, but there is DaVinci Resolve , which is arguably the best and has a free version too.”

Revati and Charles use a MacBook Pro to edit. “It helps to have an SSD drive and a large-capacity Drobo to archive can save and access all the footage for later use. Of course, sometimes it’s as simple as shooting with your phone and editing on it, either with templates or with editing apps like VLLO . The edit must roughly be in your head before you shoot. Our 35-odd years of collective experience in shooting commercial films have etched that in our minds. Take people through a journey or discovery. Every piece of content is a story, even just info-dispensing ones! As a process, do a rough lineup, without worrying about the exact points you want to cut. If it makes sense, then begin cutting precisely. Walk away from it for a bit, and you will often return with great ideas. If you have a voice-over, having that in place with your rough cut will tell you whether you need fewer or more words. The superimposed text should be limited to just the few things you want to emphasize.”

What’s the key to a catchy caption on Instagram?

“Try to be unique with your words, and don’t be afraid to make it emotional. That’s when you will be able to create an interesting caption that connects with your audience,” says D’sa. While Joshi says, “Treat each reel differently. Ideally, keep it short, but in some cases, you might need to add more information in the description that wasn't in the reel, or cue to a bigger story.”

Savi and Vid aren’t afraid to keep their captions bulky: “We’ve always been storytellers, so we love writing long and meaningful captions. I would say one should go with their instinct while penning captions. If you enjoy short and impactful captions, go the one-line route! But if words give you joy or you have valuable information to share, write a lengthy descriptive one.”

“Don’t forget to provide any context or background info that you couldn’t add in the reel,” say Revati and Charles. “Ask a question—it’s great to get more engagement and comments. Write in your own voice, and make sure you don’t use phrases that you’d never utter. Use hashtags and keywords for added discoverability, and put relevant information in (cost, location, timings, etc). Lastly, since it’s happened to us, please don’t copy someone else’s caption!”

Malhotra adds, “Crafting an engaging caption is an art in itself. Here's the secret: Keep it concise and relatable. Always remember, that your caption serves as the second point of engagement. This means that if someone enjoys what they see in your reel, they'll be inclined to delve deeper into your caption. So, make your caption an extension of the story your video tells.”

What shouldn't you do when making travel videos?

“Make sure your content isn’t being uploaded in low-resolution. Remember that timing is everything. Don't post when your potential audience is catching the z's and try avoiding non-trending audios,” says Malhotra.

Savi and Vid suggest that you do not “overdo the filters and colors, as overly processed reels tend not to do well. Avoid too much text [on the video itself]. It gets tough to read and people love watching and listening more than reading. And don’t just copy trends mindlessly. If it’s you, then go for it.”

Joshi says, “Copying someone else’s style might work for a while, but you need to develop your own aesthetic. We personally feel there are no strict no's, except reels promoting irresponsible behavior that can cause societal harm, such as littering in public places, ignoring driving rules to film sensational content, or reinforcing sexist stereotypes,” say Savi and Vid.

Revati and Charles add, “Just post. Don’t wait to gold-plate it. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. Don’t worry so much about what people are going to think or how you look. You’re forgotten at the start of the next reel!”

What Do The Numbers On Fishing Reels Mean?

Not you own the most expensive, best, your fishing trip will reach the highest efficiency. The important thing here is to understand how your reels operate and master them.

No one can deny that understanding and mastering it is a complex problem. There are so many things you have to know; you will have to take a long time to understand all the reel numbers. From there, combine fishing styles, lures, budgets, and so on to decide the most suitable reel for you.

Not in your first reel, I’m sure that. Nobody can find a reel most suitable for yourself right from the first choice. It is a long process and constantly changing. And as a result, experienced anglers will not only have a reel for themselves; they will combine many types to handle different cases.

So, what do the numbers on fishing reels mean? They can be numbers in different types of reels. Still, common include Reel Size & Line Capacity, Gear Ratio & IPT (Inches Per Turn), Bearing Count, Model Number, Additional Letters & Numbers.

All of them are quite a lot and quite complicated to know all. I will try to explain briefly and be easy to understand for you. I won’t go into detail about those numbers. However, maybe I will have later articles about it, but you need to search yourself. You can refer to the article below.

Reel Size & Line Capacity

These numbers tell you the diameter of the spool. This is probably the first thing you care about when choosing to buy a reel. You need to remember that the bigger the size, the greater the reel and more lines. The large size reels are the first condition to fight with the sea monsters.

Different manufacturers will have other numbers, 3000 or 300 or 30, but they all have an ordinary meaning, i.e., the same size.

Look at the conditions, where fishing, the size and weight of the fish you plan to catch to choose a suitable size reel.

When selecting a specific reel size, it will usually come with the line capacity, monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braid. Combine the most suitable suit to achieve high efficiency during the trip.

Gear Ratio & IPT

The number of gear ratio shows how many times the spool turns with one reel crank. It’s pretty simple to understand; for example, a reel with a gear ratio is 6.1: 1, meaning spool turn 6.1 times when you finish one crank, 4.1:1 is 4.1 times a crank.

You need to note this is a significant number; it dramatically affects your fishing trip performance. It depends on the fish you are aiming for and the lure you are using.

The reel with a higher gear ratio means the ability to recover lure as it’s faster, suitable for bass fishing in deeper water. But with the lower gear ratio reels, the greater your reel capacity, it fits the battle with larger fish.

Gear Ratio is the numbers that show the power of your reel. Note that no gear ratio is better, simply higher or lower; different uses depending on the usage you target.

You cannot just look at these numbers and think that the reel has the same gear ratio is the same. Depending on the manufacturer, the size of gears, and spools, they can be different.

Since then, a number has been born, none other than IPT (Inches Per Turn). It indicates precisely the inches of line you retrieve each crank. If there is a difference in the IPT ratio between the two same ratio reels, look at the size of your spool, the cause is there.

Bearing Count

This number indicates the number of bearings in the reel. For example, if a 5+1 reel, the first number is the number of ball bearings in the shaft, the rear is for the rolling bearing. It shows the ability to reduce friction and increase your reel speed. The less friction, the smoother spinning, and the distance can also increase significantly.

When buying bearings, you should especially note the quality of ball bearings, not the number. I had a separate post on the number of ball bearings that your reel should have; you can refer to” How many ball bearings should a fishing reel have? ”

Model Number

Next are the usual characters everywhere; it is simply the abbreviations of the reel, indicating its name and model. For example, CUDC is the CURADO DC.

You don’t need to care too much about it. Anglers, including me, often omit these numbers; I have never thought about it.

Additional Letters & Numbers

Besides the digits I mentioned above, there are some letters and other numbers you can refer to.

• 150 : Right-handed baitcasting reel
• 151 : Left-handed baitcasting reel.
• 2000+ : Bigger spool on a spinning reel.
• PG : Power gear (lower gear)
• HG : High gear reel
• XG : Extra high gear reel
• FA/FB : Front drag
• Ends with “S” : Shallow spool
• Ends with “PGS” : Power gear shallow spool
• Ends with “PGSS” : Power gear super shallow spool
• Ends with “HGS” : High gear shallow spool
• Ends with “SDH” : Shallow spool double handle
• Start with “C” : Compact
• Start with “SW” : Saltwater

How Does a Film Reel Work?

We grew up taking pictures on film. Shooting home videos on film. Watching movies in theaters on film.

Basically, for kids born before the millennium, film is ingrained in our history as much as the memories they carry.

In fact, you probably have a collection of old negative rolls, video tapes – and if you’re lucky enough – reels of film . But have you ever stopped to think about how a reel of film actually works? After all, the format has been around for more than 125 years but its invention remains remarkable even now.

What is film & how is it made?

To understand how film reels work, we’ve got to know what film is first. Essentially, a series of actions (aka a motion picture) is recorded onto strips of plastic film base (actual glass back in its heyday) where one side is coated in gelatin emulsion containing micro silver halide crystals. When light is exposed to these crystals through the camera lens, the gelatin emulsion on the plastic film darkens, capturing the pattern of whatever image the camera shot. The result is an invisible image on the film. When the film is developed with a certain mixture of chemicals, the invisible image becomes visible producing what we all know as a photograph .

Motion pictures are just strips of photographs recorded through individual frames that when played at a certain speed (on a reel) produce moving images. Put the film in front of a projector to project the images on a big screen and you’ve got yourself a cinema experience. Just add an audience and popcorn.

Do you hear that?

Okay, so now you know what film reels are made of and how they visually work, but what about audio? How is sound captured on film?

The simple answer is that audio is recorded onto film by the variable-area soundtrack process (or SVA). Okay … what’s that mean? Well, the more detailed answer lies in how the SVA process works, so buckle up because it’s a bit of a technical ride.

During SVA, sound is recorded in a transparent line (which varies in width according to the frequency) along the length of the motion picture film . As the film passes this transparent line, an exciter lamp shines bright light along the line, passing through the film onto a photodetector. From here, the photodetector changes the light to an electrical current, sending it to a pre-amplifier to boost the signal of the current before passing it along to an amplifier, and finally to a speaker which actually produces the sound for people to hear . Whew. If that isn’t teamwork, then what is?

And to think, all of this specific technology was thought up by brilliant minds more than a century ago. Just think how different our lives would be without the invention of film and film reels. We’d have no movie theaters to entertain, no summer blockbusters, and more importantly, no way to capture those memorable moments we all love to look back on. Catching bigger fish usually means using heavier and stronger tackle, but using the drag allows anglers to fine tune their approach to battling fish. With the drag set properly, the reel will exhaust the fish quickly and efficiently. The flex of a rod and gears in a reel help anglers pull fish in, but the drag is a crucial tool that helps in a different way. Here’s everything you need to know about the drag on a fishing reel and how to use it efficiently.

What does Drag do on a Fishing Reel?

The drag setting on any fishing reel has the same purpose: regulate the tension or force required to take line off the spool. Tightening the drag makes it harder for the fish to run and take line, while having a loose drag makes it easier.

If the drag is set to loose, line will easily spool off the reel, and fighting the fish is inefficient. When the drag is set too tight, the line can’t go out fast enough, resulting in breaking off.

Finding the right amount of drag is important to successfully landing fish, and there are times when changing the drag in the moment makes sense.

How Drag Works

The drag system on most reels uses friction between two plates to regulate how much force is required to spool off line. On a spinning reel, the drag is usually set by twisting the knob on top of the spool. On conventional reels, the drag can be adjusted in one of two ways depending on the reel.

The first type of drag is called star drag because it uses a star shaped wheel next to the crank to tighten and loosen drag. The second type is lever drag, which uses a sliding lever to adjust the tension in the drag system.

While all of these reels and drag systems are used effectively every day by anglers around the world, there are pros and cons to each. For spinning reels and star drag, there’s no way to see how much you’ve adjusted the drag. This makes setting and adjusting the drag something that is done by slowly working it until it’s just right. On conventional reels with lever drag, the drag setting can be seen on top of the reel. This also makes it possible to know how much it’s been adjusted or set it at a predetermined setting.

When should I Adjust the Drag

Adjusting the drag is a key part of setting up any rod and reel combination. The drag should be set long before the first cast to prevent any potential mishaps. Find the sweet spot where you want your drag set initially before hitting the water. Depending on the type of fishing you’re doing, it might require drag adjustment on the fly.

When targeting giant fish or using lighter tackle, it’s pushing the limits of your gear, which means the drag may need to be adjusted depending on the situation. When you hook up with a small fish that won’t risk breaking off, tightening the drag will help haul the fish in quickly. If you’re lucky enough to hook up with a truly massive fish, loosening the drag a little is safe because it prevents the fish from making a quick run and outpacing the reel, eventually breaking off.

Northeast Multispecies (Groundfish) Fishing Year 2024 Common Pool Trip Limits

Effective on May 1, 2024, this action implements possession and trip limits for the Northeast multispecies common pool fishery for fishing year 2024 and other measures.

Table 2. Fishing Year 2024 Cod Trip Limits for Handgear A, and Handgear B Permits

Vessels with a Small Vessel category permit can possess up to 300 lb of cod, haddock, and yellowtail flounder, combined, per trip.   These vessels are also subject to trip limits that are equal to the DAS possession limits applicable to multispecies DAS vessels as described in Table 1.

Additionally, Northeast multispecies vessels may not target yellowtail flounder within the Closed Area II Yellowtail Flounder/Haddock Special Access Program (SAP) in fishing year 2024. Northeast multispecies vessels are not allowed to fish in this SAP using flounder trawl nets, but may fish in this SAP to target haddock with a haddock separator trawl, a Ruhle trawl, or hook gear. This SAP is open from August 1, 2024, through January 31, 2025.

Lastly, the Regular B Days-at-Sea (DAS) program is closed for fishing year 2024. During this closure, Northeast multispecies vessels may not declare or use regular B DAS.
