When is the best time of year for a wine tour in Tuscany?

The best time to visit Tuscany for a wine tour largely depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few peak periods that are particularly popular. Spring (April to June) and Fall (September and October) are often considered the ideal times for a Tuscan wine tour. The weather during these seasons is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscape is at its most vibrant – with blooming flowers in spring, and changing leaves in the fall. Fall is also the time of the grape harvest (known as “vendemmia”), which can be a fascinating process to witness. Some wineries even allow visitors to participate in the harvest. Summer (July and August) in Tuscany can be quite hot, and many Italians go on vacation in August, which means some wineries might be closed. However, the region is still beautiful during this time and the wine tours are certainly still operational. Winter (November to March) is the low tourist season in Tuscany. While the weather can be cooler and wetter, there are fewer tourists, making it a good time to visit if you prefer to avoid crowds. Regardless of when you choose to visit, it’s always a good idea to check with individual wineries or tour companies in advance for their operating hours and to book your tour.

What is the main wine region in Tuscany?

The most renowned wine region in Tuscany is the Chianti region, famous for producing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines. It’s characterized by its idyllic rolling hills, historic vineyards, and scenic villages. The Chianti region is situated between Florence and Siena, making it conveniently accessible for tourists and wine lovers. However, Tuscany boasts several other notable wine-producing areas. For example, Montalcino, located south of the Chianti region, is renowned for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. Nearby, Montepulciano produces the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Further west towards the coast, you’ll find the Bolgheri region, known for its superb “Super Tuscan” wines, a term referring to high-quality wines that don’t adhere to traditional Italian wine regulations but have nonetheless achieved worldwide recognition. Each of these areas offers unique variations in climate, soil, and winemaking traditions, contributing to the diversity and richness of Tuscan wines.

Delve into the essence of Tuscan viticulture with a 1.5-hour wine tasting and lunch at a storied Montepulciano winery, a highlight among our best Montepulciano wine tours .

Guided by an expert sommelier, this experience unfolds in ancient cellars from the 14th century , offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of wine production.

Participants will enjoy tastings of four distinguished wines , including the celebrated Rosso di Montepulciano DOCG and Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, complemented by traditional Tuscan appetisers.

This tour offers a perfect fusion of historical insight, gastronomic exploration, and wine education , ideal for those looking to connect with the deep-rooted wine and food culture against the picturesque backdrop of Montepulciano.

What To Keep in Mind When Choosing a Winery Tour in Tuscany

Tuscany offers quite the mosaic of wine experiences, with each region presenting its signature varietals and winemaking traditions.

Whether you’re drawn to the robust Brunello di Montalcino, the classic Chianti, the noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, or the emerging Bolgheri wines, there are several key considerations to keep in mind that can help ensure your wine tour is both memorable and enlightening.

Understanding Regional Wine Profiles

  • Brunello di Montalcino : Esteemed for its full-bodied, bold flavours with notes of dark cherry and leather, originating from the vineyards around the picturesque town of Montalcino.
  • Chianti : Known for its Sangiovese-based wines, offering robust flavours, high acidity, and a tannic nature, embodying the ‘heart’ of Tuscany.
  • Siena and Montepulciano : These areas offer a spectrum of experiences, from the structured elegance of Vino Nobile to more approachable Rosso di Montepulciano wines, characterised by their fruitier and softer profiles.
  • Bolgheri : A newer region on the Tuscan wine map, gaining recognition for its high-quality Bordeaux-style blends, showcasing the versatility of the Tuscan terroir.

Tour Origin Points and Transportation

  • Consider starting your tour from urban centres like Florence or Siena for convenience, especially if you prefer not to drive. Note that tours from Florence to regions like Montalcino require a full-day commitment due to the distance.
  • Most of the tours that start in cities will also include transport; and for pretty much any tour that includes a multiple number of wineries the same can be said.
  • Tours to individual wineries, you will likely need to find your own transport to and from.

Exclusivity and Group Size

  • Tours vary from intimate, small-group settings offering a personalised experience to larger, more social group tours.
  • Brunello tours, for example, cater to a more exclusive market, reflecting the prestige and price point of Brunello wines. You can expect these tours to be either small-group, or private in nature.

Food Pairings and Local Cuisine

  • Many tours incorporate food pairings or meals, highlighting the synergy between Tuscan wines and the region’s rustic cuisine. Look for tours that celebrate this culinary harmony, and knock off two birds with one stone!

Physical Accessibility

  • Assess the physical demands of each tour, especially if mobility is a concern. Some tours involve walking through vineyards or navigating historical cellars.

Customisation and Seasonal Considerations

  • Customisation options can enhance your tour, especially if you have specific wineries or wine types in mind. Also, consider the season of your visit, as the landscape and tour offerings can vary throughout the year.

Practical Tips for Wine Tours

  • Research : Delve into the wineries included on your tour to ensure they match your wine preferences. they’ll often be listed on the tour description.
  • Dress Comfortably : Vineyard tours often involve walking, so comfortable footwear is essential, in my opinion.
  • Stay Hydrated : Remember to drink water between tastings.
  • Check Inclusions : Know what your tour includes, such as meals, transportation, and the number of tastings.
  • Local Regulations : Adhere to local customs and regulations, particularly regarding drinking ages and health and safety measures.

Some Common Questions to Have

Are wine tours in tuscany suitable for beginners.

Absolutely, wine tours in Tuscany cater to everyone, from beginners to connoisseurs – so don’t let this put you off. If you’re new to wine, a tour can be a fantastic introduction. You’ll learn heaps about tasting techniques, grape varieties, and winemaking processes.

Plus, the guides are usually passionate about making wine accessible to all, so don’t be shy to ask any questions you have – no matter how basic they might seem.

Can I join a wine tour without a car?

Yes, you can – in fact wine tours in Tuscany seem to cater very well to this market! Many tours offer pickup services from major cities like Florence and Siena.

For those starting in more remote locations, some companies provide transport options as well. It’s always worth checking the tour details for transportation options, or you could reach out directly to the tour provider to arrange something that works for you.

What should I wear on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Comfort is key! You’ll likely be walking through vineyards and cellars, so wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain. The weather can be quite variable, too – hot during the day and cooler in the evenings – so layers are your friend. And don’t forget a hat and sunscreen if you’re visiting in the summer!

Is it possible to accommodate dietary restrictions on wine tours?

This typically shouldn’t be a problem. Many tours that include food are more than willing to accommodate different dietary needs. Just make sure to mention your requirements when you book to give them the heads up in advance and to make necessary preparations for you.

Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have specific allergies, they can usually tailor the food to suit your needs. The local cuisine is delicious, and it’s worth experiencing alongside the fantastic wines.

How much wine will I be tasting?

This varies by tour, but generally, you can expect to taste anywhere from 3 to 6 different wines. It’s all about quality over quantity; you’ll be savouring each sip and learning about the characteristics of each wine.

Are children allowed on wine tours?

This depends on the tour operator. Some tours are more family-friendly and can accommodate children with non-alcoholic beverages and even have activities for them. However, others might be more focused on the wine experience and set an age limit for participants. It’s best to check the tour details or contact the provider directly if you’re planning to bring along younger family members.

Can I buy wine directly from the vineyards?

Yes, and the wineries will love you for it – for them, tours are a great showcase of what they have to offer! Visiting the vineyards is a great opportunity to purchase wines directly from the source, often including limited editions or special vintages not widely available elsewhere. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to support the local winemakers.

Many wineries can even arrange shipping for you if you’re worried about luggage space. I’ve been ordering small shipments of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from a winery I visited many years ago each year at Christmas – it’s great to have that connection into the future.

What’s the best time of year to go on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Tuscany is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are particularly magical times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and the landscape either blooming or harvest-ready.

Summer can be quite hot but vibrant with tourists and full of life. Winter is quieter, which can be perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate experience, though some wineries may have reduced hours or tours.

Armed with this guide, you’re now ready to explore Tuscany’s premier wine regions.

From the rolling hills of Chianti to the esteemed vineyards of Montalcino and beyond, the perfect wine tour adventure is within reach. Choose wisely, drink responsibly(!!), and immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty and taste of Tuscany!

Welcome to the world of wine in Tuscany, where rolling vineyards, historic towns, and exquisite wines converge to create an unforgettable sensory experience. Nestled in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is a region renowned for its rich winemaking traditions and breathtaking landscapes.

Explore the picturesque countryside, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, as you take a journey to discover the hidden gems of Tuscan winemaking. From the cypress-lined hills of Chianti to the medieval charm of Florence , Siena , and Montepulciano , Tuscany boasts a myriad of cities where wineries flourish and local wines flourish.

The best season to visit Tuscany

The best time to visit Tuscany depends on your preferences. Spring (April-June) offers mild weather and blooming landscapes. Summer (July-August) is perfect for sun and beaches, but crowded. Autumn (September-October) is great for wine enthusiasts. This is a harvesting season  for both wine grapes and olives. Visiting Tuscany during this unique period will give you the chance to witness the beginning of the production of wine and olive oil. Winter (November-February) is quieter, ideal for exploring art and culture.

What to do in Tuscany?

Tuscany is a region rich in culture and is the home of Italian Renaissance art. Here's what you must not miss in between your wine-tasting tours in Tuscany:

  • Florence is the capital city of Tuscany and one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the entire world. Stop by the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral and admire the incredible Brunelleschi Dome.
  • Siena , a charming town known for its narrow streets flanked by brick buildings.
  • Pisa , the city of the Leaning Tower.

What to taste in Tuscany?

Tuscany is one of the world's greatest red wine producers. The most popular are Chianti Classico, Sangiovese and Brunello di Montalcino.

  • Chianti Classico  is a medium to high-bodied red wine and it's the ultimate Tuscan king.
  • Sangiovese  is a more fruit-forward red wine compared to Chianti (even if they come from the same grape).
  • Brunello di Montalcino  is another famous wine in Tuscany. Brunello can be young or old, but generally, the most recognizable aromas are those of blackberry, strawberries, chocolate, leather, and delicate flowers.

What to expect from Tuscany wine tours?

If you are a passionate wine enthusiast, participating in Tuscany wine tours is something you cannot miss! All wineries in Tuscany offer exquisite wine tastings, together with very detailed guided tours of their cellars and estates. Many tours in Tuscany also include a guided visit to the magnificent  vineyards  and in most cases, the guide, often an expert winemaker, will provide you with insights about the  wine production . In some cases, your wine tours to Tuscany will also include an  olive oil tasting  experience, since many wineries also have olive grooves and produce olive oil.

Testimonials

Our Client’s Words

You can read here what some of our clients had to say about our Tuscany wine tours. Imagine what we could do for you!

My wife and I took Angie’s Castle & Wine tour in late May. We had a fun, small group with Barbara as our guide. Barbara was very genuine and truly expressed an interest in wanting all of us to enjoy our day, as well as our time in Tuscany Would I recommend the tour? Yes, without a doubt. If you are a red wine drinker, these are smaller producers that you are most likely not able to purchase in the U.S. They make excellent wines, so treat yourself and send some home Our wines arrived in four weeks. Grazie Mille Angie and Barbara for a terrific day!

We had an excellent wine and castle tour day. Federico was an exceptional guide and we had a wonderful time touring and tasting wine and olive oil. We would like to also mention the fantastic lunch we had it was memorable. We would highly recommend this tour.

Mark Spencer

An amazing day touring the Tuscany wine region! I would especially like to thank Francesca for making my 50th birthday a memory I will treasure forever! Her knowledge of wines, the countryside, olive oil, etc. was extraordinary! The wineries and the owners (Stephania and Marco) were excellent hosts and provided us with samples of the most amazing wines and olive oils. I would highly recommend your company to anyone visiting the Tuscany region! Again, thanks!!!

I went on a wine tasting tour with Angie a few years ago and because of the great experience I booked again for May 2013. Angie’s tour was already fully booked so we were in Olivia’s group, another awesome day! The whole region is beautiful and there are plenty of tour operators but for me Angie’s personal service and small groups make her the go-to company for your Tuscan wine tasting tour. A bonus with the smaller groups is that Angie takes you to small and medium sized wineries, not the giant mass production places, so you really get face to face time with the owner/winemakers.

Angie’s blog

My name is Angela and this is my Tour Operator business specialized in Tuscany wine tours in Chianti and Super Tuscan wines . I studied for the sommelier qualifications recognised by the Province of Florence. In 2005, I set up my own company, TuscanyTourTime snc., based in Florence, and began offering minibus tours of the Tuscan wine territories.

Creating Tuscany wine tours is a result of my main passion for wine and for the wine countryside, so I’ll be happy to accompany you in exploring this beautiful wine territory as an old friend who will help you discover the most authentic parts and will assist you to fully understand Tuscan wine, be it a Chianti Classico, Brunello, Nobile di Montepulciano or a Super-Tuscan wine.

My wine tours from Florence to Tuscany are designed with special care, selecting only the finest vineyards that produce excellent wines and where possible organic quality wine.

Here, in my blog, I’ll tell you my point of view on wines and Tuscan tastes. Enjoy the reading!

All that’s left is to choose the Wine Tour in Tuscany that you’ve always dreamed of: our online booking service allows you to plan your vacation in the most popular wine regions, not to mention the most evocative places in Tuscany!

Best Tuscany Wine Tours

Tuscany is uniquely charming, a place where nature, history, culture and traditions come together to create something truly magical. Our region is known the world over as the cradle of ancient civilizations and the Renaissance, shaping history and culture not only in these areas, but all throughout Italy and Europe. In the collective imagination, Tuscany is home to evocative villages, picture-perfect landscapes, artworks, extraordinary cuisine and, last but not least, incredible wine. In this incredible territory, Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards (ABVF) Italia has developed a wine production network located in some of the best terroirs in Tuscany, amongst the most famous in the world: the forests and planted hills in the Chianti Classico; the green valleys of Montalcino, with their ordered vineyards; the magnificent, golden beaches lapped by the crystal-clear sea and the rolling inland hills of Bolgheri. This is why we can offer you some of the best wine tours in Tuscany. On our estates, you’ll have the opportunity to truly learn about wine production in these areas and discover our philosophy, based on naturalness and sustainability, low environmental impact, respect for the land, and the vines’ growth cycle. You will appreciate our high standards for quality during the wines’ vinification and aging processes, for which we use unrefined cement tanks and large French oak barrels, respectively.

Wine tasting experiences in Tuscany

tuscany wine tours

We’re happy to offer you truly exclusive wine tasting experiences in Tuscany, allowing you to discover the most evocative areas in the region: whether it’s on the coast or inland, we can meet your needs.

For those in the Chianti Classico area, our staff will be happy to welcome you to our Dievole wine shop, where one of our wine tours in Tuscany begins. We offer a vast range of experiences, including some private wine tours. With us, you will discover the great wines of Tuscany in a truly unique setting during the Dievole Wine Tasting Tour and Dievole Grand Tour, during which you will learn about the best terroirs in Tuscany from our expert sommeliers. In addition to wine, our region is also renowned for its excellent extra-virgin olive oil: with our Extra-Virgin Olive Oil technical tasting, you can explore our award-winning “liquid gold”.

If you love good wine, you can’t miss a visit to our two cellars in Montalcino : Poggio Landi and Podere Brizio. Here, our tours will allow you to explore the first DOC in Italy through our guided wine tours in Tuscany discovering two souls of Montalcino production. Podere Brizio, famous for its history, with its typicity and elegance, or Poggio Landi where you’ll find a modern and welcoming wine shop, nestled in an oasis of peace.

If you happen to be on the Tuscan coast, you can visit our estates in Bolgheri to learn about Bordeaux-inspired wines: the Tenuta Le Colonne Discovery Wine includes a visit to our seaside vineyard and cellar as well as a wine tasting in a private room. If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable private visit in Tuscany, book the Tenuta Meraviglia Panoramic Bolgheri Wine Tour to climb up to our vineyard in the hills, where you will taste our Tenuta Meraviglia wines against a breath-taking backdrop.

Reviews about us

Me and my group were extremely happy with every tour. We used Tuscany wine tours twice during our May trip. The drivers were very kind and hospitable throughout the time together, they were helpful in giving us information and setting up lunches and wine tasting. Our experience with this company was 5*. Everything was just great and wouldn’t change a thing.

We had a very tight schedule for our only day in Tuscany and Tuscany wine tours was our only hope to allow us to visit the Chianti for a few hours and get to our cruise ship in Livorno later in the day. We had a group of 5 people and had reserved the minivan. This company truly made our single day in Tuscany perfect literally. I truly felt spoiled and will use them again if the opportunity arises.

Thank you for all the accommodations and last minute changes/requests. You made our vacation easy and stress free. We have fallen in love with Tuscany and we would recommend your services to anyone visiting Italy! And when my family and I come back, I will be sure to use your services again. Thank you for everything!

“Barbara and Armando executed their roles admirably, ensuring seamless coordination throughout the tour. Navigating three major cities and historic sites was a pleasure, thanks to their competence. Barbara, our patient tour guide, adeptly managed the challenges posed by tardy and irresponsible attendees, displaying a commendable level of professionalism. Despite a few hiccups caused by irresponsible passengers, all individuals eventually boarded, and the return journey transpired without incident. The experience, albeit dramatic at times, was salvaged by Barbara’s unwavering professionalism. The driver’s exceptional skills contributed to a smooth and enjoyable ride. On the downside, the light lunch provided fell short of expectations. Regrettably, it resembled more of a simple snack with a sample wine tasting, and did not meet our culinary preferences. Nevertheless, the overall value derived from the expenditure was undeniably worthwhile.” Sam ( read more reviews now )

Wine Tasting in Tuscany

Discover the flavors in the tuscan vineyards.

all of Tuscany has something special to offer

Tuscany provides several wonderful opportunities to discover why its wines are so good - through organized wine tours , cooking lessons, wine tasting and wine cellar tours. The true beauty is you can discover Tuscany and its wines on your own , wandering the many zones in the four corners of the region, to find the mix of grapes, the style of vinification or even just the “ look ” of the wine that best suits your taste buds .

Undoubtedly, Chianti classico and the neighboring area of Chianti, just south of Florence , is one of the best known valleys and wine producing areas. Offering a wide selection of labels, production styles and recipes that exalt the Sangiovese grape which date all the way back to 1716 and beyond.

But the choices expand from here to include other zones in the south which are just as noteworthy for their award winning fragrance, colors and above all their flavour . Just think of Brunello around the small hamlet of Montalcino , a rich full-bodied wine with a distinct personality and longevity. Further east, one enters into the zone of Vino Nobile, which is produced near Montepulciano . The Orcia DOC , the newest addition to a long list of spectacular flavors, is nestled between the two above mentioned greats, working on establishing a reputation.

And it doesn’t stop here, travel the full length of Tuscany north to south, east to west and you will meet with several variations on a theme, where grapes are the theme and the variations include the wines of Morellino Scansano, Lucca and Montecarlo, Cortona and even along the coast in the area of Bolgheri . Many of these areas are well organized with itineraries mixing traditional flavors and wines with the " Strada del vino ".

“Worth every cent!” - I can't stress enough how valuable it is to have Christian as a guide through Tuscan wine country. He is well spoken, extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and its people, has a great sense of humor and is an absolute professional and a gentleman. I learned so much about wine and olive oil and castles and Italian history in just one day. It was a pleasure to spend the day with him and I would do it again and plan to do it again. Thanks, Christian, for an absolutely terrific day.

Steve G Hummelstown, Pennsylvania

“Outstanding Tour” - Azzura was fabulous. She picked us up from our villa and provided us with an authentic Tuscan experience through the Chianti wine area. We lunched in a small family owned winery where we were treated to a delicious Tuscan meal accompanied by the proprietors selection of wine pairings. If you are looking for a perfect day in Tuscany look no further than a day spent with Viaggi d'Ambra.

“Tour of a lifetime!” - We had an incredible time with Azzurra in Tuscany, co-owner of Viaggi d'Ambra. Vin Santo tastings, pecorino cheese shops, views of castles, and fields of poppies...we couldn't ask for more. This was...

“Fabulous, fabulous and fabulous!” - Christian gave us the most wonderful tour and we can't sing his praises enough. He drove us to see some sights in Florence then to the town of San Gimignano where we walked around this beautiful area. Off to his friends small winery where we tasted wines and oils followed by a wonderful lunch made by a young couple who owned the winery along with their family. The food was spectacular! Christian was very informative and easy to talk to. My husband works in the wine industry and even learned some things that day from Christian. Fabulous tour, well worth the money. It was the highlight of our trip. You won't be sorry!

“Fantastic” - We had an amazing experience with Christian and Azzurra. They came recommended from other tour operators we had spoken to as one of the best in Italy. They arranged our trip from start to finish, drove us to boutique vineyards with amazing wines and food while offering us in-depth insight into the wine making process and the history of each vineyard and the region. If you want someone reliable, knowledgeable and personable to take you around Tuscany at a very reasonable price you should look no further. I cannot say enough great things about the experience. Thanks Christian!!!

“Personalized tours of Tuscany” - For all three adventures we were chauffeured by Azzurra or Christian, the owners of Viaggi D’Ambra tour company. Their warmth, local knowledge and personalities added much flavor and local flair to the time touring. We were able to modify what we did, when we did and where we did based on our specific areas of interest. The experience was much more enriched because of the personal commitment and effort of our tour guides. We felt like we had just become part of an extended Italian family. “Excellent Tour” - Our guide for the Tuscany tour for the day was Christian and he was wonderful. He drove us to see many sights around Florence and the Chianti region. We stopped at the old town of San Gimignano where we had some time to wander around. Afterwards our treat was being taken to a small winery high up in the hills where we had lunch made for us by the young owners of this winery. It was a fantastic lunch, including wines and olive oils prepared by this couple. It was a very memorable tour and well worth the money paid.

The Best Wineries to Visit in Tuscany

Few wine regions have the instant name recognition of Tuscany 's Chianti, first legally defined in 1716 (but recognized as a wine region as early as the 13th century). Some of Chianti's most acclaimed wines, however, don't carry its name. Only reds based on the Sangiovese grape can be called Chianti. Ambitious, rule-breaking Super-Tuscans, most often based on international grapes such as Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah, carry the humbler IGT Toscana designation. Vintners near the town of Montalcino make Tuscany's greatest wine, Brunello di Montalcino, from a local Sangiovese clone, Brunello. Here, the best wineries to visit throughout the region. — Richard Nalley

Antinori Chianti Classico

Arguably the most widely known name in Tuscan wine around the world, Antinori's showplace winery in Bargino offers a wealth of visitor experiences, in addition to a "taste-your-way across Tuscany" lineup of wines in the tasting room. Book ahead for the various levels of guided tours and tastings, which include a short film, cellar visits, the art museum, and of course, wine tasting. The rooftop Rinuccio 1180 restaurant offers glass-wrapped views of the countryside. antinori.it

One of Italy's oldest wineries, dating to the mid-16th century, Montepulciano's Avignonesi has been rejuvenated since coming under new ownership in 2009 (among other things, the estate's 345 acres have converted to organic farming). The winery offers a broad range of bottlings — including its famous Vin Santo and Vino Nobile — plus a slate of tour, tasting, and dining opportunities. Closed January and February. avignonesi.it

Badia a Coltibuono

A former monastery, this impressive Chianti Classico estate is devoted now to the secular pursuits of wine and food (among other things, producing wonderful olive oil). Visitors here can choose from a menu of agro-tourism options, including stays in the comfortably refurbished ancient monastery (with a pool), wine courses, and a cooking school. The formal gardens are worth a stroll, too. coltibuono.com

Barone Ricasoli

Italy's oldest wine estate — 900 years and counting — is the one that essentially invented Chianti wine as we know it: The "Iron Baron" Bettino Ricasoli proposed it as a Sangiovese-based wine back in 1872. The Ricasoli family's imposing Brolio castle opens its gates these days for a variety of experiences, from drop-in tastings at the wine shop to elaborate tours and gourmet dinners. There is also a lovely and private house on the estate for two-night minimum stays. ricasoli.com

Biondi Santi, Tenuta Il Greppo

The history of the noble Biondi Santi family is inextricably bound up with the Brunello wines of Montalcino — it was an ancestor of the current proprietor, Jacopo, who isolated its revered Sangiovese Grosso grape clone in the 19th century. This most famous of Montalcino estates comes down on the side of tradition, producing monumental, long-lived wines for collectors. This extraordinary estate offers a range of tasting options with cellar visits, but it's a must to book ahead. biondisanti.it

This is the flagship property of Carmignano, and often its trendsetter — the first to introduce Cabernet Sauvignon to its blends, for instance. The excellent wine lineup here ranges from affordable everyday drinking, like the Barco Reale, to the muscular Super-Tuscan Ghiaie della Furba. The noble Bonacossi family offer their visitors an array of options, including guided tours with a tasting and lunch (book a terrace table at the Vinsantaia restaurant), and a culinary school. The estate also offers accommodations in two historic buildings, one a former hunting retreat of the Medicis. capezzana.it

Capo d'Uomo

These vineyards, painstakingly terraced on the sea cliffs of the Argentario promontory, are among the most spectacular anywhere. The wines are proprietary blends, two reds and a white, named for the winds that sweep across the vineyards. A stylish, personal-scale winery that also offers sea-view accommodations. grimaldisavelli.com

Castellare di Castellina

Media magnate Paolo Panerai's Chianti winery is one of Tuscany's most acclaimed estates, for its top-of-the-line Super-Tuscan I Sodi di S. Nicolo, its Chianti Classicos, and Vin Santos. Its vineyards are located in a natural amphitheater at some of Tuscany's highest altitudes. Book ahead for customized tours and picnics that take advantage of the estate's grounds and commitment to biodiversity. castellare.it

Castello Banfi

The Long Island-based Mariani family imports Italian wine to the U.S. — including such stalwarts as Riunite, Cella, and Bolla — and became vintners themselves 1978, buying up major holdings in Montalcino and across Tuscany. Today their portofilio includes an entire hamlet surrounding a medieval fortress they named Castello Banfi. This is a major wine tourism destination, which provides tasting opportunities for Banfi's extensive range of wines, plus restaurants, a boutique hotel, a glass museum, and a balsameria, where fine vinegar is made according to ancient methods. castellobanfiwineresort.it

Castello di Ama

Book ahead, and allow plenty of time, for a tour and tasting at this grand, deep-pocketed estate near Siena and its charming village. These wines, including the high-end Merlot L'Apparita and the Chianti Classicos, are highly regarded, with prices to match. You can also taste them at the wine bar L'Enoteca, in the village, or at a terrace table at Il Ristoro di Ama for lunch, but then you'd miss the impressive gardens, buildings, and 14 art installations on the estate's grounds. castellodiama.com

Castello di Nippozano/Frescobaldi

One of five Tuscan estates owned by the 30th generation of the Frescobaldi family, a Tuscan wine dynasty, and the region's largest vineyard owners. Wines like the wonderful Chianti Classico Riserva and the Mormoreto blend are enough of a draw here, but the atmospheric castle's picturesque perch above Pelago is added incentive, as are the comprehensive tours, tastings, and customizable private events. All of the Frescobaldi estates are open to visits (book ahead for tours). frescobaldi.com

Castigion del Bosco

The Ferragamo family (of fashion fame) founded this luxury resort on a 5,000-acre property in Montalcino's Val d'Orcia, whose history stretches back to 600 BC. Things have been considerably updated, with a top-notch Brunello di Montalcino winery, restaurants that source from the estate's own gardens, high-end accommodations (the resort is managed by Rosewood), and an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf golf course that takes full advantage of the rolling terrain. castigliondelbosco.com

Fattoria dei Barbi

The Colombini family has been making wine in Montalcino for 700 years, and its Brunellos and Morellino di Scansanos are among the region's best. A visit to the hilltop winery includes a museum devoted to the family and the wines of Montalcino. Stay on for a meal at the taverna, which serves local specialties, including the roasts that so perfectly complement these wines. fattoriadeibarbi.it

Fattoria La Loggia

Just south of Florence, this one-time Medici estate dating to 1427 is a complex of ancient stone buildings, walls, towers, and cellars overlooking a panoramic view of the Chianti hills. The estate's wines, including the Nearco Super-Tuscan and a celebratory spumante, share pride of place at this stylish agro-tourism destination with the owners' notable art collection. fattorialaloggia.com

Fattoria di Lamole

Welcoming and rustic, this non-boutique-ified winery and farm complex outside Greve occupies a lovely hillside surrounded by painstakingly stone-terraced vine-rows, silvery olive trees, and deep forests of chestnut and oak. The Chianti here, like the agro-tourism accommodations, is traditional and easy to enjoy. fattoriadilamole.it

Nestled in a picture-book setting in Chianti Classico's amphitheater-like Conca d'Oro (Golden Shell) valley, this is a large estate in Chianti terms, practicing organic and sustainable agriculture that extends not only to its vineyards, but to olive oil and cattle as well. The all-Sangiovese Flaccianello IGT is deservedly the star here, but the relatively more affordable wines down the line are sought-after, too. There are three guesthouses available for wine-country stays. fontodi.com

One of Tuscany's most familiar labels, Ruffino is also one of the most consistent of the large Chianti producers, turning out a vast selection of wines sourced from growers across the region. The firm owns numerous estates in Tuscany and typically receives visitors at Poggio Casciano, a 14th-century Tuscan villa just outside Florence with lovely grounds and a showplace barrel tunnel. Open weekdays only, by appointment. ruffino.com

Visitors interested in biodynamics and sustainability — not to mention soft-textured, full-flavored Vino Nobile di Montepulciano — should prioritize this exceptional estate southeast of Siena. It is open year-round for tours and tastings, with a kitchen that serves locavore lunches — the seasonal black truffles are from the estate — at the lovely terrace restaurant with its picture-window views. Another bonus: the multi-lingual guide staff. salcheto.it

Tenuta San Guido

The Marchese Mario Incisa's odd desire to duplicate First Growth Bordeaux on his swampy backwater estate in western Tuscany in the 1940s not only lead to arguably Italy's most famous wine, the much-imitated Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc Sassicaia, but also touched off a land rush to the once-obscure northern Maremma reaches of Bolgheri. An appointment here is something of a pilgrimage for wine lovers, and there is also the allure of Italy's oldest nature sanctuary and the estate's historic buildings. tenutasanguido.com

Val delle Corti

Owner Roberto Bianchi is known as a traditionalist and Sangiovese loyalist — no Merlot here — and his organically farmed vineyards near Radda are at some of Chianti's highest elevations. "The Hut," a charming and well-appointed guesthouse on the property, offers both privacy and proximity for area touring. valdellecorti.it

Villa Pomona

A "heart of Tuscany" experience near Castellina, this lovely property produces worthy Chianti Classico (and fine olive oil) but enchants visitors with its age-old, rambling stone buildings and acres of diverse woodlands. Two guesthouses allow visitors to marinate in it all and to swim in the panoramic-view pool. fattoriapomona.it

Poggibonsi: 4-Course Cooking Class with Wine Tasting

A good wine is best savored with a good meal, and fortunately Italy is all about both. This tour takes place within the picturesque confines of San Gimignano . It is a bottega that is as authentic an Italian kitchen as you can get.

After taking your own time to absorb the town’s treasures, a chef will give you and expert-level cooking class. Feel like an expert yourself as you make some of Tuscany’s classic kitchen specialties, such as pasta, chicken stew, and some dessert.

Join 14 other students as you master the traditions and techniques of the Tuscan kitchen. After this, take time to appreciate how well your meal pairs with a few fine glasses of local wine.

Don’t worry — a bit later on you’d be able to go on a proper local wine tasting session where you’ll learn to appreciate the finer flavors of the red nectar. Other wine tours shift your focus to the sights around you. But this one focuses on the stimulation of your palate.

San Gimignano: Vineyard Walk and Lunch with Wine Tasting

Lately, vineyards are no longer simply revered places that produce wine grapes. They have also been turned into aesthetic marvels, especially with the introduction of “spiral vineyards” — grape vines arranged in a spiral pattern, with a vantage point at the center from which to view the marvel.

Visit one such spiral vineyard in this tour, owned by the Giachi family. Here you’ll learn not just about the vines but also about the history and context of almost every structure in sight. Of course, you will also get ataste and context of the estate’s wines. You’ll be able to trace their interesting history.

The tour is capped with a sumptuous Italian lunch, with such Tuscan food as Truffle lasagna, Tuscan ribollita, cantuccini, and more.

Montalcino, Pienza, and Montepulciano Food Tour from Siena

It says food tour on the label, but the real highlights here are the wine cellars you would be visiting. There’s one in Montalcino, which on its own is famous for its IG-worthy rolling hills and fresh produce. Its streets and fortress are typical of the Tuscan region, and its wines are as excellent.

The Pienza leg of the tour explores the area’s architectural treasures, especially the Val d’Orcia whose lanes overlook beautiful landscapes. The last leg, at Montepulciano, explores the stately buildings hand-in-hand with the area’s own ancient wine-making tradition. Finally, a bus drives you back down to Siena. Your exploration of the finer points of wine and history may continue there.

This is just a small cross-section of what Tuscany has to offer in terms of wine and all the fun that surrounds it. Wine production and wine-tasting is as much an art as is the region’s paintings and architecture. It is as much a product of nature as the unrivaled landscape that makes Tuscany such a draw for tourists the world over.

Of course, since the place is such a draw. You’ll want to have a way to avoid the crowds and jump the lines. This is why pre-booking, especially with a reputable tour company as Get Your Guide, is highly recommended!
