Vancouver and Victoria are both Canadian cities, located in the western part of the country – in the province of British Columbia . Victoria is the capital city of BC – beautiful, compact, and full of ‘Victorian and European vibes’. 

Vancouver, on the other hand, is one of the coolest cities in Canada – fun, with lots of places to see, eat, shop, and just take in the waterfront vibes and mountains nearby. 

Planning the PERFECT Vancouver to Victoria Day trip Itinerary

Victoria is located on Vancouver Island. It is about 107 kilometres (76 miles) southwest of Vancouver. 

The day trip by road (car or bus) will involve a ferry ride, and it will roughly take about 4 hours one way, from downtown Vancouver to Victoria.  

Vancouver to Victoria by plane – FASTEST

Taking a flight from Vancouver to Victoria is the FASTEST way to get there. Flight tickets start at $99 CAD per person. 

The airport in Vancouver (YVR) is located in Richmond, which is slightly away from downtown (city centre).

Victoria airport to Inner Harbour (city centre) is about 35 minutes. Also, keep in mind that you have to allot extra time for security and boarding, etc. 

The flight from Vancouver to Victoria is just 35 minutes. There are a lot of companies that offer direct flights from both cities. You can check flight rates here and also get cashback

Vancouver to Victoria by Floatplane Ride – FAST

Want to cut all the checking and waiting times? Ride a floatplane and travel from Vancouver to Victoria in 35 minutes. 

Floatplanes are a type of seaplane that floats mounted under the fuselage to provide buoyancy. 

These floatplanes are operated by Harbour Air in BC, and there are two terminals from where you can board the plane in Vancouver – one is in downtown and another one is in YVR’s South Terminal. 

You can board your floatplane from downtown Vancouver (seawall) and then arrive in Victoria (inner harbor). 

At the airport, you will have access to washrooms, charging ports, a small cafe, etc. and it cuts down the time that you will need when navigating the international airport. 

When you hop on the seaplane ride, you will be flying south over the Salish Sea, and take in views of the beaches, and forests of Gulf Island. 

You will arrive at Victoria’s Inner Harbour in 35 minutes, and as soon as you land you will be welcomed to the majestic view of the Fairmont Empress hotel and the BC Parliament Buildings. 

It is super easy to just walk from the Harbour Airport and then explore the city in 6+ hours, and then take a flight back to Vancouver after enjoying the day trip! 

Note : Do not forget to carry your passport or ID

Ferry from Vancouver to Victoria – CHEAP

Taking a ferry from Vancouver to Victoria is one of the cheapest ways to get there. 

There are two terminals that are located very close to Metro Vancouver. They are – Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen. 

To get to Victoria, the popular terminal is Tsawwassen in Delta BC. 

Tsawwassen ferry terminal is located about 45 minutes drive from Vancouver city. (We will share both rental car and bus routes and pricing options later below). 

Ferries between Vancouver and Vancouver Island are operated by BC Ferries . 

In a nutshell, you will be heading to Tsawwassen Terminal (near Vancouver), and then arriving at the Victoria (Swartz Bay Terminal).

• From Downtown Vancouver, travel to Tsawwassen Terminal (takes 45 minutes by car. Buses are available)
• Take the ferry – from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal near Victoria (it takes an hour and thirty-five minutes)
• Travel from Swartz Bay to Downtown Victoria (it is another 40 minutes of travel time)

A single adult ticket reservation (18 to 64 years) costs $17.20 CAD, one way. You can buy a ticket online (which we recommend doing during the summer months) or at the terminal. 

Tickets are priced as follows

• Pay at the terminal: $80 CAD for a car and driver (without reservation)
• Pay at the terminal with Reservation: $97 CAD for a car and driver 
• Prepay reservation and ferry cost: $87.50 CAD for a car and driver

Vancouver to Victoria by shuttle/bus – CHEAP

One of the ways to get to Tsawwassen Terminal – Vancouver is by bus. There are multiple bus schedules available to suit your day trip. 

These buses from Vancouver to Victoria are operated by BC Ferries, called the BC Ferries Connector. This is one of the efficient ways to get to the Tsawwassen Terminal to catch a ferry.

Tickets cost around $75 CAD per person (one way) for the bus and the ferry rides together.

Without the BC Ferries Connector, you can take a public transit ride – take the Canada Line of Skytrain to Brighouse then bus #620 to Tsawassen. 

This trip could be longer depending on the time of day, but it is one of the cheapest ways to get there. 

Vancouver to Victoria by rental car – SELF DRIVE

If you are planning to rent a car and get to Victoria, then you will have to get to the 

Tsawwassen Terminal from Vancouver first, and then take the ferry. 

Drive from Vancouver to Tsawwassen Terminal, and you will be there in 35 minutes.

Keep in mind , there are terminal and vehicle-specific check-in times at your ferry departure, and advance booking is always recommended. We don’t advise doing this for a day trip though as there are other easier options available (such as a day tour or seaplane ride). 

The law on hitchhiking in British Columbia is complex and while it is not illegal, it is not endorsed by the Ministry of Transportation.

Visit the Parliament Buildings

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings in Victoria is a must-see for any visitor to the city. Built in 1898, this iconic building showcases beautiful architecture, artwork, and sculptures. 

The grounds feature several gardens filled with flowers, trees, and other greenery throughout the year.

You can take a free guided tour of the Parliament Buildings, including a visit to the Legislative Chamber and viewing galleries. 

During the tour, you can learn about the architecture and history of the building as well as see artifacts related to British Columbia’s past.

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings are a great place to experience history and culture in Victoria BC. And they are open all year round.

Royal BC Museum

Located just a 3 minute walk from the Parliament Buildings, the Royal BC Museum in Victoria is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the city. This world-renowned museum showcases art, artifacts, and specimens related to British Columbia’s history and culture.

You can explore the many exhibitions on display at the Royal BC Museum which cover topics such as natural history, First Nations culture, and colonial history.  They also organize temporary exhibits all year round!

Located near downtown Victoria, Chinatown offers plenty of shops and restaurants to explore. 

You can take a stroll along or visit Fan Tan Alley – the narrowest alley in Canada!

Chinatown is also home to the classic Chinese gate and some of Victoria’s oldest restaurants. Foodies should take a walk along Fisgard Street to sample the delicious local cuisine, including dim sum and roast duck.

The Fisherman’s Wharf is a bustling hub of activity. 

Find seafood restaurants, retail stores, galleries, and specialty food vendors in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. This vibrant floating community also offers plenty of activities to enjoy. 

Kayaking and fishing tours are available as well as boat rides on the harbor. Whale-watching tours also depart from here. 

Fisherman’s Wharf is also home to several unique eateries such as Barb’s Fish & Chips and The Lobster Man Seafood Market, which offer a taste of the freshest seafood in town.

If you have more time in Victoria, you will absolutely love it! With its beautiful scenery, mild climate, and several trails, parks, and beaches to explore, Victoria is the perfect place for a walking or cycling tour. 

One such place is Beacon Hill Park. Beacon Hill Park is a beautiful green space in the heart of Victoria. You can explore the peaceful gardens and natural ponds which are home to various species of birds and other wildlife. 

There is also an abundance of outdoor activities such as walking, running, and cycling here. Beacon Hill Park also features several playgrounds for children to explore. 

You can also take a stroll along the picturesque pathways that wind through the park’s wooded areas or relax in one of the many grassy areas.

Craigdarrock Castle is a stunning 19th-century castle in Victoria. This majestic estate features Victorian-era Scottish Baronial architecture style with lush gardens. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. 

You can explore the castle’s grand halls and chambers which are filled with antiques and artifacts from days gone by. You can also take a guided tour of the castle and learn about its fascinating history. 

The tour hours are very limited, so we recommend checking and reserving a spot ahead of time. If tours are not available you can still visit the castle grounds. 

Butchart Gardens tour is also one of the must-add activities to your Victoria itinerary. Located just a short drive from the city centre, this 55-acre garden offers visitors stunning floral displays and a variety of activities to enjoy.

The gardens feature over 900 plant varieties, as well as a wide range of fountains, sculptures, and artifacts.

Victoria is a good day trip from Vancouver. You can also explore Whistler and the Grouse mountains on day trips from the city.

You must explore the stunning Stanley Park which is one of the largest urban parks in the world, and it features vast forests, gardens, and beaches as well as plenty of outdoor activities such as cycling and kayaking. 

You can also take in breathtaking views of the city skyline from one of its many viewpoints such as the Prospect Lookout Point , or relax on its many beaches.

Vancouver is home to several cultural attractions such as the Museum of Anthropology, which showcases a variety of First Nations artwork, and the Vancouver Art Gallery which features an extensive collection of Canadian art. 

The Museum of Vancouver showcases the civil history of the city.

Enjoy shopping on Robson Street , or stop and pay a visit to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

Inner Harbour Inner Harbour free

The Inner Harbour is Victoria's primary tourist neighborhood. The harbor itself – home to various fishing boats and colorful floating homes – is framed by wide pedestrian streets, often frequented by street vendors and buskers. Numerous cafes and restaurants line the sidewalks and provide the perfect locale to savor an afternoon cup of tea while keeping your eyes peeled for whales playing in the open water. The Inner Harbour also hosts some of Victoria's most popular attractions, including the  Royal British Columbia Museum  and the  Parliament Buildings . If you're embarking on a boat or ferry tour, this is where you'll likely start your journey.

Although the majority of recent visitors recommended spending a few hours at the Inner Harbour for the view, some suggested devoting at least half a day as there is always something interesting to see and do. For an even more charming scene, return in the evening, when the Parliament Buildings are lit up. 

The Butchart Gardens The Butchart Gardens

These world-renowned gardens have impressed Victoria visitors since 1904. Resting on 55 acres about 15 miles north of the  Inner Harbour , Butchart Gardens were carefully constructed by Jennie Butchart on her husband's former limestone quarry. Today, more than 1 million people stop by each year to meander along the property's flower-lined paths, which contain more than 900 varities. Visit on a summer evening to see the gardens illuminated by colored lights and to enjoy some musical entertainment. If you're planning a summer visit and want to avoid the crowds, heed the advice of garden staff and stop by before 10:30 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m.

Travelers describe the gardens as incredibly beautiful with awesome views and recommend that you bring a camera. They also advised setting aside several hours to make the most of the experience. If you need a break, retreat to one of the three eateries located on-site. There is also a carousel and boat tours available on-site.

Parliament Buildings Parliament Buildings free

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings are hard to miss. These neo-baroque structures with their impressive blue dome face off against Victoria's famed Fairmont Empress Hotel and make an excellent backdrop for an Inner Harbour stroll, especially at night when the facade is dressed in lights. But if you want a closer look at the building (which dates back to 1898), the parliamentary process and the history of the province, many travelers recommend a tour, raving about the well-informed guides. Although you can take a self-guided tour, you should consider tagging along on a free guided tour, according to recent visitors.

If you happen to be here when Parliament is in session, consider sitting in on one of the Legislative Assembly debates. You'll find a schedule of discussion topics on the  Parliamentary Calendar . The Parliament Buildings are open every day during the summer from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On weekends, visitors must join a free public tour. During the winter, the buildings are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Complimentary guided tours run regularly throughout the day and last roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Royal British Columbia Museum Royal British Columbia Museum

The Royal British Columbia Museum offers visitors a comprehensive introduction to the region's history and culture. Exhibits include tribal artifacts from the First Nations, natural history displays and even replicas of Colonial-era settlements. The museum also boasts an IMAX theater and rotating special exhibits.

Recent visitors said this museum is a must-see when in Victoria as it offers a far-reaching look at the region's geography and indigenous people. Reviewers also praised the museum's layout, which is situated in chronological order. Some reviewers even said this was one of "the best museums" they've ever visited. Plus, if you're hungry, don't miss the museum's year-long food truck festival, which takes places in the building's back courtyard.

Goldstream Provincial Park Goldstream Provincial Park free

Located about 11 miles northwest of the  Inner Harbour , Goldstream Provincial Park houses a stunning array of flora and abundant natural beauty across its nearly 1,000 acres. But the real reason to visit this public wildlife area is rather fishy: Spend some time by the Goldstream River from late fall to early winter, and you're bound to catch a glimpse of the annual salmon migration. Between October and December, chum, coho and chinook salmon can be seen leaping upstream to their ancestral spawning beds. The park's trails follow the river closely, allowing you to get a good look at the watery highway.

Before you make a beeline for the river, consider stopping first at the Goldstream Nature House. The center offers educational programs on the annual salmon migration and other exhibits and activities. And even if you're not planning a winter trip to Vancouver Island, recent travelers said the massive cedar trees, abandoned gold mine and rumbling waterfalls make the park a must-see attraction at any time of year. Reviewers also said you should plan to wear appropriate hiking clothes and shoes so you can fully explore the park (and make your way up to the highest point in Greater Victoria – Mount Finlayson). When you need a break, stop for a picnic.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort Mount Washington Alpine Resort

Sitting on the eastern edge of Vancouver Island's Strathcona Provincial Park, the Mount Washington Alpine Resort is one of the region's most prominent ski areas. And it's easy to see why: The resort boasts 81 alpine runs and 1,657 feet of vertical drop. Couple that with an average 38 feet of annual snowfall and you've got a powder hound's paradise. Recent travelers who visited during ski season said the resort is small, but well-groomed and family-friendly, calling it a "gem."

Mount Washington is a year-round resort, so if you happen to miss ski season, you can take advantage of the area's many hiking and biking paths and gondola rides.

Fairmont Empress Fairmont Empress

Challenging the  Parliament Buildings  from across the  Inner Harbour  is the elegant Fairmont Empress hotel. Built in the early 20th century, the Empress is one of the region's oldest hotels. But while the interior decoration is worth a photo or two, the main reason to visit this colossal hotel (if you aren’t staying there) is for the tea. The Empress has been participating in this time-honored Victorian tradition since opening its doors, and according to travel experts and recent visitors, teatime continues to be a decadent affair here. (Fun fact: The tea served at the Empress is the hotel's own specially crafted brand.)

Although most Victoria visitors pass on high tea at the Empress due to its high price tag (around CA$78 or $61 per person), some visitors say that the experience is worth the money. If you're interested in experiencing more than just its famous tea service, consider staying at the  Fairmont Empress  while in Victoria, which lodgers love for its Old World feel. For more information, visit the hotel's  website .

Though you may be able to spot whales from the ferry, you'll have the best chance of seeing them during an organized whale-watching tour. Plus, you'll benefit from knowledgeable guides who have access to the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, which sits on the southernmost part of Vancouver Island (and Canada) on the Pacific coast.

There are a variety of tours available – some more intimate than others – but most last three to four hours. Recent visitors raved about their experiences with Eagle Wing Tours and BC Whale Tours . Some reviewers said they lost count of the amount of whales they saw, while others were particularly impressed with the guides, who kept a respectful distance from the animals and provided a wealth of information to tour goers.

Cowichan Valley Cowichan Valley

British Columbia is peppered with vineyards. To snag a taste of BC vino (and maybe even a few bottles to bring home), spend a day or two in the Cowichan Valley – second only to the Okanagan as the province's highest producing wine region. Occupying the heart of Vancouver Island – roughly 35 miles northwest of Victoria – the Cowichan Valley is home to a variety of different wineries and tasting rooms. The best way to get a feel for this part of the island is to stop at several vineyards for a tasting. Or, to participate in the region's annual wine festival, plan to visit in late August.

But wine isn't the only reason to visit this beautiful stretch of Vancouver Island. The Cowichan Valley is also home to golf courses, art galleries and plenty of hiking terrain. Many travel experts also recommend bringing a bike so that you can cover more ground without confining yourself to the car. Recent visitors recommended the Cowichan Valley Trail for cycling and hiking.

Craigdarroch Castle Craigdarroch Castle

To sample the Victorian high life, head about a mile east of the  Inner Harbour  to Craigdarroch Castle, a National Historic Site. This impressive home was built in the late 1800s for coal tycoon Robert Dunsmuir. Although it's more of a mansion than a castle, it houses 39 rooms, each of which is decked out in furnishings from the turn of the 20th century. Another highlight are the more than 30 gorgeous stained glass windows, the majority of which illustrate floral themes.

Even if you aren't a big history buff, many previous visitors recommend stopping by Craigdarroch Castle for a glimpse into how the wealthy once lived, not to mention stunning views of downtown Victoria. The only downside among reviewers: The house doesn't have any ramps or elevators, making it difficult for visitors with mobility issues to tour the upper three floors of the castle.

Sooke Sooke free

This little community on the southern tip of Vancouver Island makes for a quaint and quiet alternative to Victoria. Sooke's sheltered harbor is filled with fishing boats rather than tourists, and its numerous parks provide a scenic backdrop for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Recent visitors enjoyed the East Sooke Regional Park, citing its beauty and peaceful setting. You'll also find an assortment of water activities here – including fishing, sailing and whale watching – thanks to the town's location on the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

And just because it's a small town doesn't mean you won't get your culture fix: Sooke hosts a variety of shops, art galleries and several notable festivals like the  Sooke Fine Arts Show  in July and August.

Victoria Butterfly Gardens Victoria Butterfly Gardens

While you wouldn't normally relate Canada with the jungle, the tropical wetlands thrive in the Victoria Butterfly Gardens. As its name suggests, this indoor facility is home to thousands of butterflies spread across its 12,000 square feet. But they aren't the only critters: The gardens also host a variety of birds and fish, including flamingos and koi fish. You'll find all of these creatures mingling amid the flora, creating a vibrant, colorful atmosphere. What's more, the gardens also house an insectarium with insects and invertebrates from around the globe.

Recent visitors called the Victoria Butterfly Gardens fun and family-friendly, with great staff. Reviewers also said that there is more to see than just butterflies, such as frogs, flamingoes and bugs. A few travelers remarked on the gardens' humid setting, advising future visitors to wear layers.

Victoria Bug Zoo Victoria Bug Zoo

If you're traveling to Victoria with kids in tow (or even without), many recent visitors recommended a stop at the Victoria Bug Zoo. Located a block or so north of the  Inner Harbour , this fairly small facility is home to a large number of creepy crawlies. Here, you'll come face to face with gigantic walking sticks, furry tarantulas and even glow-in-the-dark scorpions.

Recent visitors raved about the zoo's employees, who are ready to answer any questions you may have about their six- and eight-legged friends. Plus, you can even hold some of the insects – a major point of praise for reviewers.

Miniature World Miniature World

Miniature World continues to delight the young and the young at heart with its numerous tiny worlds. Sitting just a short walk from the  Inner Harbour , this interactive museum houses dozens of miniature displays and dioramas. Follow the model Canadian railway as it travels across the country or spend some time at the big top in the "Circus World" display. If you are a literary buff, you'll appreciate a glimpse of the world of Dickens, while time travel aficionados should check out the "Space 2201 A.D." display.

Many recent visitors praised the models' intricate details, and said to take your time as you take it all in. Reviewers said this was an excellent way to spend a few hours on a rainy day and a lot of fun for kids.

Visit the Royal BC Museum

Founded in 1886, the Royal British Columbia Museum is a great place to learn about BC’s natural and human history. There are three permanent galleries inside, including Natural History, Becoming BC, and the First Peoples Gallery. The natural history collection alone has more than 750,000 records of specimens that are almost exclusively from the province. The Royal BC Museum is also home to touring exhibitions, such as the Titanic, Egyptian artifacts, and the Vikings. You can also watch educational films and commercial films at the IMAX Victoria theatre. It’s also conveniently located within walking distance from the Empress Hotel and the inner harbour.

Visit Fisherman’s Wharf

Not far from Victoria’s Inner Harbour is the lovely floating neighbourhood of Fishermans Wharf. This hidden treasure is a great place to eat food, shop at unique stores, and go on eco-tours. This place was busy with people eating fresh seafood when we visited, but our favourite part was touring the floating homes and just imagining what it would be like to live in a house that moved with the water. I believe we even saw some guesthouses if you want a really cool experience in Victoria.

Go for a Stroll at Beacon Hill Park

If you’re looking for a beautiful park to stroll around for the afternoon, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one better than Beacon Hill Park , which is conveniently located in downtown Victoria. Simply walk up Belleville Street past the Museum of Natural History and the Imax Theatre to Douglas Street, take a right, and then climb a short hill until you reach the top. Beautiful inner-city nature awaits you. However, do note that the park is a whopping 200 acres in size, so plan your visit accordingly.

Explore the Inner Harbour and Victoria Pier

One of the best things to do in Victoria is to simply stroll along the inner harbour, which is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. This is where you’ll find many historic streets and buildings, as well as a variety of festivals and shows throughout the summer. It’s also home to an international ferry terminal, float planes, and many ecotourism businesses.

Take a Walking Food Tour

One of the great things about taking a walking tour is that you’ll actually learn about the place you’re visiting. You’ll learn about the street you’re walking on or the neighbourhood you’re walking through, helping to make the city truly come alive for you. Visit the Victoria Parliament Buildings

Right next to the Inner Harbour is the impossible-to-miss British Columbia parliament buildings . Overlooking stunning Victoria Harbour, these beautiful historical buildings are as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Visitors are able to do self-guided tours of the buildings or can go on a regularly scheduled 35-minute guided tour, which occurs seven days a week during the summer months. The Parliamentary Dining Room and Gift Shop are also open to the public year-round.

Go inside Craigdarroch Castle

For a Victorian experience and a real-life example of a “bonanza castle” – massive homes built for wealthy entrepreneurs during the industrial age – you’ll want to visit the Craigdarroch Castle . Built between 1887 and 1890 on a hill offering impressive views of the area, you’ll find four floors of exquisite stained-glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian-era furnishings.

Go Whale Watching

One of the top things to do in the warmer months is whale watching . Thanks to an abundance of orcas (killer whales), the areas around Victoria and Vancouver Island are some of the best places in the world for these majestic marine animals. While we haven’t gone whale watching directly from Victoria, we have done it a few hours north in Port Renfrew, which was the best whale-watching tour we’ve ever done. We’ve also experienced Vancouver whale watching on the mainland and it was also very good. Highly recommended!

• Orca Spirit Adventures : This is the company we were with just off the coast of Port Renfrew. Despite being the last day of the year for tours in Port Renfrew, we saw dozens of Humpback whales and orcas, making it the wildest whale-watching tour of our lives.

Go Small at Miniature World

Honey, I shrunk the kids! Remember that movie? Now you can somewhat experience that at one of Victoria’s top tourist attractions – Miniature World . This little world features more than 85 miniature dioramas and displays, including the world’s smallest operational sawmill, the Great Canadian Railway, one of the world’s largest model railways, and even two of the world’s largest Doll Houses circa 1880 complete with over 50 furnished rooms! Talk about attention to detail!

Abkhazi Garden

This is yet another reason why Victoria is nicknamed “The Garden City”. Complete with an exquisite heritage home, the beautiful Abkhazi garden was created in 1946 by Prince and Princess Abkhazi. It’s only one acre in size but features dramatic glaciated rocky slopes, magnificent native Garry oaks and gorgeous vistas, Japanese maples and rhododendrons, carpets of naturalized bulbs, and much more. It might be small in size but it’s the overall design that leaves the greatest impression upon visitors.

Visit the Victoria Bug Zoo

First, a miniature world and now a miniature zoo? What’s with Victoria and the little things in life? For those interested in insects and spiders, this is the place to be! this is a great opportunity to view and experience multi-legged creatures from around the world in a safe, fun and friendly atmosphere. You’ll find approximately 50 species, including Canada’s largest ant colony, giant walking stick bugs, alien-eyes praying mantids, and even glow-in-the-dark scorpions. Whether you’re with kids or not, bring your camera for an unforgettable experience at the Victoria Bug Zoo !

Stop by the Empress Hotel

The Fairmont has done it again. This hotel is not only one of the top tourist attractions in the city but also one of the most historic buildings as well. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time to the days of the British Empire. Admiring the flora crawling up the building from the outside is just stunning. This iconic Canadian Pacific Railway hotel was built between 1904 and 1908 and has become one of the world’s most famous hotels. But even if you don’t want to shell out the dollars to spend the night at the Empress Hotel , you can just visit the hotel or even partake in afternoon tea, which is served in the lobby to more than 800 visitors per day.

Explore Chinatown

It’s quite amazing how many cities around the world are home to Chinatown . But Victoria’s is unique in that it’s the second oldest Chinatown in all of North America, second only to the one in San Francisco. Created by Chinese immigrants more than 150 years ago, Chinatown has become a testament to the resiliency of the culture and traditions brought overseas long ago. From the Gate of Harmonious Interest to the bold colours of lucky red and gold throughout the neighbourhood, Chinatown is simply a place you shouldn’t miss when visiting Victoria. While there, don’t miss meandering down Fan Tan Alley as well, which is one of the narrowest streets in Canada.

Go Kayaking

Regardless if this is your first kayaking adventure or if you consider yourself a pro, Victoria is an awesome place to paddle and is the gateway to world-class paddling destinations around Vancouver Island. It’s a wonderful way to get some exercise while getting unique views of the harbour and the city, while also having the opportunity to spot local marine wildlife. Being surrounded by water, Victoria offers a huge variety of paddle sports experiences from the serenity of a calm lake, or the joy of an urban paddle on the inner harbour, all the way up to the excitement of a quick-moving current. It’s not just kayaking either. Paddle-boarding is also popular, as are canoeing and other water vessels. The best time for kayaking in Victoria is April through October, but thanks to the city’s mild climate, it’s possible to paddle all year long. There are many companies offering rentals and tours .

As you might imagine, with so much water surrounding the city, sailing is another popular activity in Victoria, BC. Whether you want to learn how to sail or just go for a scenic tour around the harbour, this is a great place to do it.

Get Amazing Views from the Malahat Skywalk

If you’re looking to get incredible views of the surrounding islands and sea, check out the Malahat Skywalk, which is only 30 minutes from Victoria. This new incredible lookout attraction rises up to 250m above sea level, offering a sweeping panorama view of Mt. Baker, Finlayson Arm, the Saanich Peninsula, and islands in two countries. While you’re up there, walk out onto their sturdy 84 ㎡ Adventure Net and be suspended above the centre of the tower with uninterrupted views of the lush arbutus forest and the spiralling structure beneath your feet. Even better? Choose to take the ramp back down or go even faster on their 20-metre Spiral Slide, all the way to the bottom.

With so much nature surrounding the city, Victoria is an awesome base for stunning hiking opportunities. Whether you hike in the city or outside the city, there is no shortage of trails and natural sites, including waterfalls, mountaintops, historic sites, and coastal treks. Most trails are only 30 minutes outside of downtown but will make you feel like you’ve gone deep into the backcountry, except with more people. Trailheads are well signposted, usually with maps, and trails are very well maintained. Most hiking trails are open year-round and are dog-friendly as long as they are on a leash. Some popular options include Coast Trail in Sooke, Mount Work Hiking Trail, Thetis Lake Hiking Trail, and the Trestle Bridge Hiking Trail in Goldstream Provincial Park, just to name a few.

Who doesn’t love butterflies? Well, now you can step into an indoor tropical rainforest filled with thousands of butterflies fluttering about the place. There are over 70 species of these magical creatures to see, as well as koi fish, turtles, poison dart frogs, parrots, flamingos, and many tropical flowers.

Get a View from the lookout

If you’re looking for one of the best views of the city, head on over to the downtown Harbour Centre’s observation deck for panoramic views over Victoria, as well as the neighbouring mountains and ocean. Click here to see ticket prices.

Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site

If you’re looking for a Parks Canada National Historic Site , this 19th-century coastal artillery fort is bound to satisfy. Tour through secret bunkers, military command posts and original 19th-century buildings while also having the opportunity to camp overnight in group-friendly oTENTik’s. There’s also the adjacent Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site, which is home to Canada’s west coast’s first lighthouse.

Day Trips to the Smaller Islands

While Vancouver Island is quite big , there are actually hundreds of smaller Gulf Islands and inlets in the Georgia Strait around Victoria, BC. These make for excellent day trips. You could rent a boat, arrange a tour, or even take the ferry to popular islands such as Gabriola, Saltspring, and/or Thetis. Once on the little islands, you can simply relax in nature, go biking or hiking, visit local artisans and eateries, or find yourself a nice beach to whisk the day away. Ferry rates are about $10 CAD ($7 USD).

Explore Vancouver Island

While some certainly visit Victoria just for Victoria, we highly recommend taking another week or more and exploring more of Vancouver Island . It’s truly a special place and one of the most beautiful areas in the country. You’ll find gorgeous rainforest treks, mystical coastal beaches, jaw-dropping waterfalls, lovely little island towns, and the best surfing in Canada out by Tofino. There are also whale watching and wildlife tours all over the island, the opportunity to go snorkelling with salmon around Campbell River, and some of the best multi-day hikes in North America. Where will you go?

Tips for Saving Money in Victoria

With a little effort, you can turn Vancouver Island into an affordable travel destination. Most of the outdoor stuff is free so if you stick to that and cook your own food, you can keep your costs pretty low! Here are some of my ways to save money when you travel to Vancouver Island:

Couchsurf: Although Couchsurfing requires quite a bit of upfront work, it can be a great way to meet locals while saving mega dollars on accommodation.

Camping: Vancouver Island is home to a plethora of camping opportunities for those well-equipped. Use the DiscoverCamping.ca website to find potential campsites around the island. Expect to pay around $20 CAD or more per campsite.

Happy Hours: When looking for pubs and restaurants, find out if they have a happy hour. This is a great way to save money on food and drinks, while still enjoying the dining scene of each place.

Go Car-Free: If you’re only planning on visiting one city, such as Victoria or Nanaimo, consider leaving behind your vehicle and taking the ferry as a single person. You’ll save more than $50.

Go Biking: Vancouver Island is one of the top places in the country for mountain biking, so if you have the experience, you can save a lot of money by biking from destination to destination.

Hitchhike: Considering its popularity, there are many opportunities to try hitchhiking. Obviously, you’ll want to check with the local laws beforehand, but this can be a great way to save money. This should only be considered if you have lots of time.

Where to Eat in Victoria

There’s no shortage of places to chow down in Victoria.

Spinnakers : This is definitely the coolest place we ate at during our visit to Victoria. Not only is it a fancy pub but it’s also a brewery. From Kale Caeser to Shrimp Flatbread and Wild Pacific Halibut Fettacunni, Spinnakers is a great place for any meal of the day. But what makes it more special, aside from the views and ambience, is that they also brew their own beer. There are lots of options so we ended up having their beer and chocolate pairing flight, which included four house beer tasters and four handcrafted house-made TCHO Chocolate Truffles by Chocolatier Crystal Duck. We can’t wait to go back!

Getting to Victoria BC

If you’re a visitor looking for different ways of getting to Victoria, here’s some practical advice on how to get there.

Getting to Victoria by Plane

If you’re flying into Victoria, you’ll most likely be flying into Victoria International Airport (YYJ). Although there are other smaller airports around the island, this is the one that gets used by most visitors. It’s located just 25 minutes from downtown, is the 3rd busiest airport in British Columbia and offers easy access to downtown Victoria, including by public bus or taxi. The public bus costs $5 CAD but space for baggage is limited.

Getting to Victoria by Car and Ferry

Victoria is also a great place to visit by car, especially if you plan on exploring more of Vancouver Island. If you’re driving to Victoria, you will need to take a ferry from the mainland to either Victoria or to Nanaimo. Most people would be either driving west from interior BC and Vancouver or potentially south from Washington. The crossing time is approximately 1.5 hours. The BC ferries leave from Vancouver’s Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (Victoria). The other option is to take the ferry to Nanaimo, and then drive 2-hours to Victoria. The cost for a car and driver is approximately $75 CAD for a one-way trip. However, it’s much better to get a rental car and have all the freedom you need. Depending on timing, you want to arrive 1-2 hours earlier than the ferry departure as it can be very busy. Upon arrival, you will be in Sidney, BC, which is 32 km (20 miles) north of Victoria, taking approximately 30 minutes by car to reach downtown Victoria. You could also take a ferry to Nanaimo and travel to Victoria from there.

Connecting to the Ferry from YVR: Tsawwassen is the closest ferry terminal to Vancouver Airport for those looking to take the ferry to Victoria, BC. For more information on how to take the bus from Vancouver Airport to the Victoria ferry. You can take public transportation from the airport to the ferry, or if you rent a car, just drive to the ferry terminal.

Seattle to Victoria Ferry: Another really cool feature about Victoria BC is that you can actually take a ferry right from downtown Seattle to downtown Victoria, sailing through some really beautiful coastal scenery. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and starts at around $110 USD.

Getting to Victoria by Bus

Just like driving to Victoria, the only way to get to Vancouver Island is to take the ferry. There is no bus that takes you all the way to Victoria from Vancouver. However, you can take a bus to the ferry, and then another bus from the ferry to Victoria. This entire route will take approximately 4 hours. Basically, you need to take the Canada Line and ride the SkyTrain to Bridgeport Station and then take bus 620 from bay 11 to Tsawwassen ferry terminal (45 minutes or more). Jump on the ferry and take it to Swartz Bay (1.5 hours). Once on Vancouver Island, catch the 70 express bus or 72 bus to downtown Victoria (1 hour +). The total cost, including the ferry, will cost around $30.

Getting to Victoria by Tour

Another option for exploring Victoria and Vancouver is a tour from Vancouver that includes the ferry .

How to Get Around Victoria

Victoria is not a huge city, and thus, there is no subway train system. There is, however, a pretty good public bus network, as well as taxis to get you around. You could also rent a car, or if not going too far, Victoria is also a great place to walk or bike.

Bus: Public bus will take you almost anywhere you need to go within Victoria, as well as to the airport and the ferry terminal. Check the BC Transit schedule and also NextRide, which provides real-time bus arrival. Another option is to take the Hop-On Hop-Off double-decker bus, which takes you to all the popular tourist sites, allowing you to get on and off as you please.

Taxi: Like most of Canada, taxis are not cheap but they can be convenient. Prices start around $3.50 CAD and go up by $1.89 CAD per kilometre after.

Bicycle: Victoria is a wonderful city to traverse by bike. There are a variety of options for renting a bike, including electric bikes as well. Another option is the u-bike , which you just grab and go across the city. The only thing you’ll need in advance is an account. The cost is approximately $1 for 30 minutes.

Walk: If you’re only going to be exploring downtown Victoria, walking is the best way to do it. There are even self-guided walking tours and paid tours you could partake in.

Carshare: Another way to get around is by carshare, which is currently operated by both Modo and Zipcar.

Harbour Ferry: For inner-city travel, the Harbour Ferry is a great way to get around and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery. It runs from mid-February until the end of October (weather permitting).

Weather for Victoria Travel (Best Time to Visit)

Victoria is one of the mildest cities in Canada, receiving very little snowfall and rarely dipping below 0°C. It does, however, get quite a bit of rain during the winter months.

March-May: The spring months are actually a great time to visit Victoria, as this is when many flowers being to bloom and the weather warms up. The average temperature is about 10°C – 18°C (50-65 degrees F).

June-August: Like most of Canada, the summer months are the busiest and costliest time to visit. However, this is when the weather is at its warmest. With maximum warmth and minimum rain, this is the best time for getting outdoors and going walking, biking or hiking. It’s also a better time to go whale watching. You’ll want to consider booking accommodation weeks or even months in advance. The average temperature is around 22°C (73 degrees F).

September-November: The fall is also a great time to visit the island, though you should expect more rain. However, we explored the island in September and had beautiful weather for weeks. We also went whale watching on the last day of the season and had the best whale-watching tour of our lives. You just never know. Just pack a sweater and a rain jacket and umbrella and you’ll be fine. The average temperature is 15°C – 20°C (55-68 degrees F).

December-February: These months represent the winter and is known as the offseason in Victoria. If you don’t mind colder weather and rain, this is the best time to save money on accommodation as well as avoid crowds. There is also skiing on Vancouver Island if you’re looking to go skiing or snowboarding. The average temperature is 9°C (47 degrees F).

Fun Things to Do on Vancouver Island and Beyond

Another great part about Victoria is that there are so many things to do outside of the city as well. From going hiking in the rainforest to camping on a beach to driving up to Tofino to go surfing, Vancouver Island is a place you could spend weeks exploring. You could also head over to Vancouver and continue exploring mainland Canada. The options are seemingly endless.

There are so many things to do in Victoria, BC, the capital of British Columbia . Once you’ve finished visiting the “Garden City,” there’s so much more to explore

So why wait? Get ready to cross some items off your Vancouver Island Bucket List !

1. Butchart Gardens

• Distance from Victoria : 22 km
• Driving Time: 35 min

If you’re looking for a quintessential Victoria day trip, look no further than the breathtaking Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay. We’ve spent many a day wandering around as a family enjoying these stunning botanical gardens.

You can take this express shuttle to Butchart Gardens from downtown Victoria, if you don’t have a car.

Begin your visit by exploring the Sunken Garden, a former limestone quarry that has been transformed into a tranquil oasis of flowers and foliage. From there, make your way to the Rose Garden , where over 250 varieties of roses bloom in stunning colors and fragrances.

Don’t miss the Japanese Garden, which offers a serene escape. For the kids, head to the Italian Garden for some gelato , and a spin or two (or 5 which happened last time for us) on the Carousel ride.

2. Waterfalls, Cathedral Grove Rainforest, and Coombs

• Distance from Victoria to Cathedral Grove : 176 km
• Driving Time: 2 hour 30 min

Discover the breathtaking landscapes of Vancouver Island, and many of my favorite places on the island on this.

Drive up island to see Englishman River Falls, Little Qualicum Falls, and Cathedral Grove – a haven for some of the island’s tallest and most ancient trees.

Along the way, drop by the quaint country market Coombs (with Goats on the Roof) , embark on rainforest hikes leading to mesmerizing waterfalls, and seize numerous photo opportunities.

We recommend this all-day, private excursion from Victoria , so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

Don’t want a tour, you can make the drive yourself!

3. Sidney 

• Distance from Victoria : 27 km
• Driving Time: 40 min

Sidney, BC, is a quaint town located just a quick 30 minute drive from downtown Victoria.

One of the most popular spots to visit is Sidney Spit, a small island located just off the coast. Take a ferry over to the island and spend the day exploring the beaches and trails. Or rent a kayak and paddle around the island’s pristine waters.

Back on the mainland, wander through the town’s many shops and galleries, where you’ll find everything from handmade jewelry to local artwork.

Don’t miss the Sidney Pier, where you can watch the boats come in and out while enjoying a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants.

For a dose of local history, be sure to visit the Sidney Museum, where you can learn about the town’s roots as a fishing and farming community. 

LOCAL TIP: Take the kids to our favourite Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea . A small, yet fun aquarium and learning centre. We stop in every time we’re in Sidney. It’s a perfect day trip if it’s a rainy day in Victoria .

Sidney, BC is a charming and picturesque destination that’s well worth a visit on a day trip from Victoria. 

4. Cowichan Valley

• Distance from Victoria : 94 km
• Driving Time: 1 hour 45 min

If you’re a wine lover visiting Victoria, BC, you’re in luck! There are a variety of wine tasting tours in Cowichan Valley from Victoria that offer visitors a chance to explore the local wine scene and sample some of the region’s best varietals.

One popular tour is this small group Cowichan Valley Wine & Food Tour,  which takes visitors on a scenic drive through the picturesque Cowichan Valley. Along the way, you’ll visit a variety of wineries and taste some of the area’s best wines.

Cowichan Valley is also known as a destination for swimming, fishing and floating in tubes down the Cowichan River on a hot summer’s day. And the Kinsesol Trestle you can hike to.

5. Victoria to Vancouver by Seaplane

• Flight: 35 min

While I highly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Vancouver, a day trip is definitely doable.

Kick off your adventure with an exhilarating seaplane flight from downtown Victoria to Vancouver , that provides a bird’s-eye view of the picturesque Gulf Islands

Once you’ve landed, make your way to Stanley Park . This urban park is 405 acres of forest, with walking paths, an aquarium, restaurants and much more. You could spend your whole day here.

A bike or walk along the seawall is a delightful way to soak in the park’s natural beauty and enjoy panoramic views of the city, mountains, and ocean.

6. Malahat Skywalk 

• Distance from Victoria : 33 km

The Malahat Skywalk is fun for all ages.

Featuring a 250-meter-long elevated walkway that takes visitors through the treetops, Arbutus Trees, culminating in a spiral tower that offers 360-degree views of the area.

Plus it’s stroller & wheelchair accessible.

Kids will love the adventure of walking through the canopy and spotting wildlife along the way. Then taking the fast route down on their Spiral Slide.

For the brave, step out onto their Adventure Net suspended above the centre of the tower.

Also one of the best things to do in Victoria, BC in winter too.

7. Saltspring Island

• Distance from Victoria : 53 km
• Driving & Ferry Time: 1 hour 30 min

Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Victoria for a day? Consider a Saltspring Island day trip! This picturesque island is just a short ferry ride on BC Ferries from Swartz Bay , and offers visitors an arts, food and nature escape.

The Gulf Islands are magical, and not to be missed. 

Start your day by visiting  Ruckle Provincial Park . Where you can hike along the rocky coastline and through old-growth forests. Don’t miss the tide pools, where kids can get up close with a variety of sea creatures.

Next up, sample delicious cheese at the Salt Spring Island Cheese Company. Made right on the island. Kids will love meeting the goats that produce the milk used to make the cheese. Pop into their cafe in the summer for tasty pizzas, salads and their goat cheese cake.

There’s also wandering through the island’s many  art galleries, studios, and fun shops where you can find everything from pottery to paintings,  kids toys and west coast inspired gifts. 

For a dose of history, visit the  Salt Spring Island Historical Museum , where you can learn about the island’s First Nations history and early European settlers. Kids will love the interactive indoor & outdoor hands-on exhibits. Best of all, it’s free. Open Wednesday to Friday & Sunday (End of May to October).

LOCAL TIP: Don’t miss the famous Saltspring Island Saturday Market , where local artisans and farmers come together to sell their wares. We always try to time our day trips with the outdoor market which usually runs from April to October.

8. Pender Island

• Distance from Victoria : 54 km
• Driving & Ferry Time: 2 hours 25 min

Pender Island is another Gulf Island that is a lovely place for a visit. Especially if you love the outdoors and are looking for a laid back vibe with family or friends.

Hike to the top of Mt. Norman for gorgeous views of the surrounding islands. Get out on the ocean with a guided sea kayak tour, through secluded coves.

Or take a swim at Mortimer Spit , and a walk along the beach and marsh trails in north Pender Island at the Medicine Beach & Nature Sanctuary.

There are so many fun things to do on Pender Island, you may just want to spend more than a day.

Ferries leave from Swartz Bay to Otter Bay up to 8 round-trip sailings daily, depending on the season. It’s only 40 minutes if direct, or longer if there’s stops or transfers at at Galiano, Mayne or Saturna Islands.

9. Pacific Marine Circle Route

A day trip along the Pacific Marine Circle Route showcases what the natural beauty of Vancouver Island is all about. 

If you are looking for a relatively quick Vancouver Island road trip, this tops our recommendations. 

This 255-kilometer drive takes you through stunning coastal landscapes, old-growth forests, and charming seaside towns. While it can be done in one day, it’s best to take at least a weekend, to really enjoy all the sites, vistas and activities each town has to offer. 

Victoria to Sooke, Port Renfrew & Lake Cowichan

Starting in Victoria, you’ll head west along the coast & Highway 14 towards Sooke (a 45 minute drive) before turning north towards Port Renfrew. 

• Sooke Potholes, and East Sooke Park are great places to spend some time in nature, hike or take a cool dip.
• In Port Renfrew, you can take a break and explore the beautiful beaches and trails of the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, Botanical Beach & Avatar Grove. 

Continuing inland, you’ll head to Lake Cowichan, on Pacific Marine Road. This used to be a dirt logging road, but has since been paved. 

Pass through the  Cowichan Valley , then drive through the town of Duncan, known as the “City of Totems.” It’s a great place to stop and wander through the town’s historic streets, which are lined with charming shops and cafes.

As well as 40 magnificent carved totem poles. They each tell their own story. Duncan also has a fabulous Saturday Farmer’s Market. 

Cowichan Bay back to Victoria

Next make a quick detour off Highway 1 to Cowichan Bay  on the East Coast of Vancouver Island. Slow down and take in the beautiful vistas of this small maritime town.  

Visit True Grain Bread, an old world style bakery,  explore Indigenous art at the Arthur Vickers Gallery, and wander this lovely seaside town.

From Cowichan Bay, you’ve reached the final leg of your journey. We recommend heading over to the iconic Kinsol Trestle, one of the tallest free-standing timber trestles in the world. It’s a quick walk along an easy trail. 

Finally, the drive will take you back to Victoria through the Malahat Drive, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. Stop at the Malahat Summit for amazing views of the Saanich Inlet and the Cowichan Valley.

One of our favorite Victoria parks, Goldstream is a good place to stop along the way. In fall you can even see the salmon run.

10. Kinsol Trestle

• Distance from Victoria : 47 km
• Driving Time: 50 min
• Hiking time: 30+ minutes

The Kinsol Trestle, along the Cowichan Valley Trail is an impressive wooden trestle bridge spanning the Koksilah River. It’s one of the largest free-standing wooden trestles in the world. 

Originally built in 1920 as part of a rail line that connected Victoria to the interior of Vancouver Island. The Kinsol Trestle has since been converted into a hiking,  biking and horseback riding trail that offers visitors a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. 

With a height of over 40 meters and a length of 187 meters, the Kinsol Trestle is a true engineering marvel that’s well worth a visit.

You can stop here on your way to Cowichan Bay  (our next stop on Victoria day trips not to miss).

11. Cowichan Bay 

• Distance from Victoria : 55 km
• Driving Time: 55 min

Cowichan Bay is a charming seaside town located on Vancouver Island, and is the perfect destination for a family outing. 

Take this epic whale watching tour   for a chance to see Orcas, Humpback Whales,  and other interesting sea life, leaving from Cowichan Bay.

Or start your day by exploring the  Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre , where you can learn about the town’s rich history as a fishing and boat-building community. Kids will love the interactive exhibits and hands-on activities.

Next up, head to the  Cowichan Bay Fishermen’s Wharf , where you can watch the local fisherman bring in their daily catch. Kids will love seeing the variety of fish and sea creatures up close.

Definitely don’t miss the Rock Cod Cafe for fish and chips.

For a fun outdoor adventure, take a kayak or paddle board around Cowichan Bay , where you can explore the local marine life and take in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Finally, end your day with a visit to the  Cowichan Bay Estuary Nature Centre,  where you can learn about the local ecosystem and even spot some resident otters and seals.

12. Witty’s Lagoon

• Distance from Victoria : 20 km
• Driving Time: 45 min

  Witty’s Lagoon ,  is a beautiful coastal lagoon located just outside of Victoria, BC. It’s a popular destination for hikers, bird watchers and beach goers, especially in the summer.

• The Lagoon Trail is a popular option, as it passes by the Sitting Lady Falls, and the Whitney-Griffiths Point picnic area.
• The Tower Point Trail is another must-see, with a scenic lookout that offers panoramic views of the ocean. It’s only 500m (one way) on a flat mixed gravel / dirt footpath, and is the most accessible section.

The Beach Trail is the one we usually take, as it  ends at Witty’s Beach . Bring your beach blanket, & a picnic and take a stroll along the sandy beach. It’s a moderate 1.2 km forest trail that also goes through old apple orchards. Keep your eye out for blackberries to pick.

LOCAL TIP: Stop at  My Chosen Cafe for lunch  after a morning beach day, if you want to forgo the beach picnic. This is our favorite restaurant in the area and a local gem. 

13. Sooke 

• Distance from Victoria : 40 km
• Driving Time: 40 – 60 min

Consider heading to Sooke, BC, where you can explore some of the region’s fun coastal hikes, explore tidepools, and dip in a river. The following are a few ideas of where to stop and hike on your day trip to Sooke from Victoria. 

Head to East Sooke Park,  where you can  hike the Coastal Trail  through old-growth forests and along rocky coastlines. Keep an eye out for the iconic arbutus trees. 

The full Coastal Trail is 10km and ranges from easy (at Aylward Farm) to more challenging, the further out you go. We usually just hike out 30-90 minutes and then return the same way.

LOCAL TIP: We recommend starting at the Aylard Farm Entrance. It’s the most family friendly for all ages. Plus there’s also a sandy beach right there if you don’t want to hike far. 

Sooke Potholes

• Distance from Victoria : 45 km

For a fun and refreshing adventure, make your way to the  Sooke Potholes , a series of hikes and crystal-clear pools and waterfalls that are perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Kids will love splashing around in the cool water and exploring the surrounding rocks.

Sooke Potholes Regional Park also makes for a good starting point for a bike trip on the  Galloping Goose Regional Trail . It’s a 55 km multi-use trail that runs from Victoria to Sooke.  Bike south toward Roche Cove Regional Park.

The  Spring Salmon Place (KWL-UCHUN) Campground is open May to September  if you prefer to stay overnight at Sooke Potholes.

LOCAL TIP: Stop at the local’s favourite diner Mom’s Cafe in Sooke after a busy day.

14. Port Renfrew

• Distance from Victoria : 111 km
• Driving Time: 2 hours

If you’re looking for a fun day trip from Victoria, BC, consider driving to Port Renfrew, a small coastal community located on the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island.

First on the list is Avatar Grove , a stunning old-growth forest that’s home to some of the largest and oldest trees on the island. Including the “gnarliest tree. ” Just a 20 minute drive north of Port Renfrew, this popular family friendly hiking trail is 1.2km of boardwalk.

Next up,  head to Botanical Beach , a scenic coastal area known for its rich & diverse tide pools and unique rock formations. 

Kids will love exploring the tide pools and spotting the various sea creatures that call them home. Just make sure you go at low-tide to make the most of the tide pools.

It is about a 20 minute scenic forest walk down to the rock & pebble beach along an interpretive trail. Just be prepared for the walk back up.  

Hike part of the Juan de Fuca Trail . The trail follows Highway 14 and the Pacific Marine Circle Route from China Beach to Botanical Beach. A day hike can be as short or long as you like.

Whale Watching!   Their season runs from May to October, so plenty of time to see orca, humpbacks and other marine life. Look to the sky for bald eagles. 

15. Juan de Fuca Trail 

• Distance from Victoria : 75km to China Beach Trailhead
• Driving Time: 1 hour 20 min

Speaking of the   Juan de Fuca Trail , this scenic hiking trail  spans over 47 kilometers along the rugged coastline of Vancouver Island.

Fun fact: I spent a summer building trails here in my youth, back when it was first being created. Showing my age lol!

One of the top things to see on the Juan de Fuca Trail is the stunning natural scenery, including ancient forests, rocky coastlines, and secluded beaches (like Mystic Beach with its waterfall). Don’t miss the chance to spot some of the local wildlife , including bald eagles, black bears, and gray whales.

There are four main  entrances to the trail, each with its own unique features and section lengths. These include China Beach, Sombrio Beach, Parkinson Creek, and Botanical Beach. Depending on your fitness level and time constraints, you can choose a section of the trail that fits your needs.

16. Chemainus

• Distance from Victoria : 80 km
• Driving Time: 1 hour 15 min

Chemainus is  famous for its stunning murals  that decorate many of the buildings in the town. These intricate works of art depict the area’s rich history and cultural heritage .

In addition to the murals, Chemainus is home to a bustling Wednesday market where you can sample local produce and browse handmade crafts and artisanal goods. Popping into their charming boutique stores, is another favorite (antique stores, art galleries, gift shops, & our favorite Hansel & Gretl’s candy shop).

If you’re visiting with kids, take them for a play and wander at Waterwheel Park , or fishing or swimming at Fuller Lake Park.

LOCAL TIP: The  Chemainus Theatre  puts on some of the best local plays I’ve ever seen. It’s a fun date to take in their brunch and one of the 4 or 5 plays they put on each year.  Derek & I have stayed at the Best Western Plus & it was clean & comfortable way to enjoy a weekend away.

17. Parksville & Qualicum Beach

• Distance from Victoria : 147 km
• Driving Time: 2 hours 10 min

Parksville and Qualicum Beach are two charming towns located a fun day trip with kids from Victoria, and are home to some of Vancouver Island’s best beaches and beach activities .

In Parksville, you can spend your day  exploring beaches at  Rathtrevor Beach or Parksville Beach,  with plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun. I spent many summers here as a kid, and teen, and take my own kids here regularly. 

Parksville offers a long stretch of sandy beach, which is perfect for building sandcastles or playing beach games. With shallow, protected waters, perfect for toddlers and babies too. 

Parksville Community Park is the playground, with space to kite fly, an outdoor gym and plenty of space to run around.

More things to do in & near Parksville, BC with (or without) kids .

There are also plenty of outdoor activities nearby, including hiking trails, mini golf, golf courses, and water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding.

In Qualicum Beach, you can take the kids to the Qualicum Beach Museum, which has a collection of artifacts from the area’s history. The town also has plenty of quaint shops and cafes, perfect for a leisurely stroll. 

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a  short drive to the nearby Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park , which offers guided caving tours of the park’s fascinating underground caves.

Or take an easy hike through  old-growth and second-growth forests of Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock and maple to either  Qualicum Falls or Englishman River Falls .

Coombs, our next recommendation below is just a short drive away.

18. Goats on the Roof, Coombs

• Distance from Victoria : 154 km
• Driving Time: 2 hours 15 min

Witness the famous “Goats on the Roof” at Coombs. Yes, you read that right – there really are goats living on the roof of the Old Country Market.

But that’s not all there is to see here. The Old Country Market is also a great spot to shop for local produce, baked goods, and souvenirs. 

And if you’re feeling hungry, there are plenty of food vendors serving up delicious eats. Like our usual stop for an eclectic mix of Billy G’s donuts and of course ice cream for our daughter. 

The town also hosts events throughout the year, such as the Coombs Bluegrass Festival and the Coombs Fair.

19. Cathedral Grove

• Distance from Victoria : 176 km
• Driving Time: 2 hours 25 min

Immerse yourself in the ancient splendor of Cathedral Grove , a protected old-growth forest in MacMillan Provincial Park.

Stand in awe beneath the towering Douglas firs, some of which are over 800 years old, and breathe in the crisp, clean air as you connect with nature.

Such a magical place. I try to stop here whenever I am in the area.

LOCAL TIP : Make a day of it and see Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Cathedral Grove & Coombs. They’re all relatively close and well worth a visit on a day trip from Victoria.

20. Bike the Galloping Goose Trail

The  Galloping Goose Regional Trail is a 55 km multi-use trail that runs from Victoria to Sooke. You can bike ride part or all of it on a day trip from Victoria, Canada.

Originally a railway line, it has been transformed into a multi use path connecting with the Great Trail across Canada.

You’ll pass by farmland, lakes, marshland, rocky outcrops and more.

Popular Galloping Goose Day trips include

• Victoria to Thetis Lake Regional Park (11km one way). Spend the day at Thetis swimming, hiking or fishing.
• Park at the Galloping Goose parking lot on Rocky Point Road and follow the trail to  Matheson Lake , then Roche Cove   Regional Parks (5km one way) then onto Sooke Potholes (another 13km one way).

If you are starting from downtown Victoria, cross the Johnson Street bridge,onto the paved path that connects to Harbour Road and the trail.

LOCAL TIP: ☕️ Stop in at Dockside Green for some tasty croissants, pastries and coffee at Fol Epi & Cafe Fantastico. A local gem. Miss S always goes for the macarons & the buttery croissants.

21. Goldstream Provincial Park

• Distance from Victoria : 19 km
• Driving Time: 30 min

Goldstream is a lovely park, perfect for a family friendly day trip. It also makes our list of our favorite Victoria area parks for families.

There’s a series of easy trails along the water, picnic areas with firepits, camping and hiking. In Fall, people come from all over to see the Salmon Run & Bald Eagles.

The Goldstream Trestle Trail is a flat, 3.5 km roundtrip easy trail that follows the old railway bed through the park. Past the Trestle.

For the more adventurous, a hike up Mount Finlayson offers a rewarding challenge with stunning panoramic views of Victoria & Valley. It’s a 6km rugged loop.

Another trail short leads you to a  47.5 metres tall waterfall.

You’ll wander through forests full of  600 year old Douglas fir and western red cedar trees along the river. Then arbutus trees, and lodgepole pine in the drier areas.

Head out to Goldstream Provincial Park

A visit to Goldstream Provincial Park is one of the best outdoor activities in Victoria, BC, for visitors. Particularly those who’re looking for hiking and biking trails .

Find yourself in town between October and December? You can witness one of the highest concentrations of bald eagles anywhere in North America as these majestic creatures return to feast on spawning chum salmon.

Located 16 km northwest of the city, the park is also a great place for camping if you’re dying to spend a night or two under the stars. And there is even a beautiful waterfall!

Dallas Road Waterfront Trail is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Victoria.

This seaside route offers stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains. Stretching from Clover to Ogden Point, there is a seemingly endless selection of isolated spots to watch the sunset over the Pacific.

For this reason, it’s one of the best things to do in Victoria for couples. Make sure to head there during golden hour—you’ll thank me later.

Victoria may be the most important stop on BC’s Ale Trail . There are so many great breweries that it has even been dubbed ‘Canada’s craft beer capital.’

The legendary Spinaker’s Brewpub  in West Victoria comes highly recommended. Need more variety? Then head to the 328 Taphouse with its 40 local taps.

Cider lovers willing to venture to Saanichton will also love the Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse . That said, my personal favourite is Hoyne Brewing , with its award-winning local beers.

Visit the British Columbia Parliament Buildings

It sounds almost strange to say, but if you love politics, this is hands down one of the best places to visit in Victoria.

These historic buildings house the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia and several other government offices.

The buildings are open for tours, which allow you to explore the chambers and learn about their history. But most locals prefer to use the grounds as a picnic spot due to their fantastic location at the heart of the Inner Harbour.

Check Out the Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site

Located just outside Victoria in the suburb of Colwood, Fort Rodd Hill is a National Historic Site that was formerly a fort that defended the city from a potential American attack (hard to believe, I know).

Today, this National Historic site allows visitors to tour historic battlements , weapons depots, and other displays.

Hatley Park Castle / Gardens

Vancouver Island road trip: Victoria, British Columbia, and the Gulf Islands

A wonderland of azure bays, rippling lakes, old-growth forests and lofty mountain peaks, Vancouver Island lies just off the coast of mainland British Columbia, but in many respects it feels like its own distinct province.

Although British Columbia's capital city, Victoria, lies at its southeastern tip, most of Vancouver Island is virgin wilderness. At 12,079 square miles, it's nearly six times larger than Canada 's only island province, Prince Edward Island.

Yet, as immense as it is, you can get to know the top destinations on the more populous yet still ruggedly stunning southern third of the island in less than a week. The highlights include Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula, the far southwestern coastline out to Port Renfrew, and the Gulf Islands archipelago. And if you have a little extra time, you can tack on a side trip to idyllic and idiosyncratic Tofino, on the island's wild west coast.

An adventure in this part of Canada appeals to recreation enthusiasts, foodies, artists and culture seekers. Hikers and beachcombers will discover endless opportunities to commune with nature and view dramatic wildlife, from formidable orcas (killer whales) to myriad migratory birds.

Victoria, along with even the island's smaller towns, abounds with farm-to-table restaurants and third-wave cafes, along with laid-back yet sometimes quite prestigious art galleries and crafts boutiques.

Ferries ply the region's spectacular Salish Sea, making it easy to travel by car from the mainland to Vancouver Island and then among the Gulf Islands, which lie just off of Vancouver Island's southeastern coast. From Victoria, it's a scenic 90-minute ferry ride across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Port Angeles, Washington, making it easy to combine this adventure with an additional road trip around the Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands .

Planning advice

Timing and border crossings.

Although you can get around Victoria's Inner Harbour and several of the towns in the area on foot, a car is needed to get around the more rural parts of the island. Factoring in the time you might spend in Vancouver if that's your gateway city, give yourself at least eight days to experience this itinerary. That gives you enough time to spend two or three nights in Victoria, a night in Sooke or Port Renfrew, and three to five nights in the Gulf Islands.

Tack on two or three nights if you're also going to Tofino. If you're planning to ferry or drive into neighboring Washington, remember to travel with your passport and make sure that if you're renting a car, the agency permits you to take it over the border (most British Columbia and Washington rental agencies do allow this).

Fees and reservations

Ferry fees, especially when traveling with a car, can add some expense to your trip. In high season, for example, it costs around 160 Canadian dollars (about $118) to take the ferry (including a standard-size vehicle, driver and passenger) to Salt Spring Island via Swartz Bay and then to continue on to Tsawwassen on the British Columbia mainland. If taking the Black Ball Ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, plan to spend about CA$135 ($100).

Although ferry reservations aren't required, they're a good idea if you're bringing a car, especially on weekends and during the busy mid-spring to mid-fall high season.

Best start and end points

Including time spent on the ferry, it's only a few hours' drive from Vancouver on the British Columbia mainland to get to Victoria. If renting a car, remember that you'll need to return your vehicle in the same country that you picked it up, and that returning it at a different location within Canada can result in steep one-way fees.

This trip begins in Victoria; however, the region's largest airport with the greatest number of direct flights is Vancouver International Airport (YVR), so it may make the most sense to start and end your travels there, and then catch a ferry from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, a short drive from Victoria.

Although there are fewer direct flights to Victoria International Airport (YYJ) than to Vancouver, it can still make sense to start and end your trip there, especially if you're short on time or traveling only a portion of this itinerary.

The best time to visit Vancouver Island

The most popular season for exploring this region is mid-May through mid-October. This is when you can count on the driest and sunniest weather. That said, Victoria and the Gulf Islands are in the Olympic rain shadow and thus generally receive less rain and cloud cover than much of the rest of western British Columbia.

So even if visiting in the heart of winter, it's possible to experience at least some partly sunny days. As you might expect, hotel rates are considerably higher during the high season, and you'll also experience more crowds at this time. Try to reserve hotel rooms well in advance during the busy period, and prepare for potentially long waits to board the ferry.

If visiting during the quieter months, from mid-autumn through mid-spring, you'll have much more of the island and its scenic roads to yourself, and you'll also potentially save quite a lot of money.

Furthermore, the dramatic squalls that often blow through the coastal Pacific Northwest from mid-November through March have created a highly popular phenomenon known as storm-watching, which typically entails some combination of braving the elements to walk on or near the beach (but safely away from the potentially dangerous surf) and then holing up afterward in a cozy room adorned with tall windows and maybe — hopefully — a gas fireplace, with a good book, a favorite companion and/or a bottle of wine.

Victoria, British Columbia

From Port Angeles, it's a 90-minute ferry ride across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, the dignified and — by Canadian standards — balmy capital of British Columbia. With a population of about 92,000, it's also the second-largest city (after Nanaimo, which is only slightly larger) on Vancouver Island, a huge (it's nearly half as large as Ireland) but minimally developed tract of sculpted inlets, jagged mountain peaks and temperate rainforest.

As it approaches downtown's compact skyline of midrise towers, the ferry chugs slowly through the sheltered, picturesque Inner Harbour, which is home to the constant hum of seaplanes, pleasure boats and water taxis.

From the terminal, you can walk to many of this leafy city's top attractions, including the ornately neo-baroque provincial parliament buildings, the engaging Royal BC Museum and the Fairmont Empress hotel. Afternoon high tea in this venerable 1908 hotel is a treasured rite as well as a testament to Victoria's traditional — some might say fusty —British reputation.

In reality, Victoria has become rapidly younger, more diverse and dynamic in recent years, and hip craft breweries, third-wave coffeehouses, trendy international bistros and sceney (but friendly) cocktail lounges now proliferate. Many of the best dining and drinking spots are set along downtown's Fisgard Street, which forms the heart of the city's historic Chinatown.

It's a short walk from the waterfront to the city's most celebrated green space, Beacon Hill Park, with its pine-shaded trails that lead south to Spiral Beach and Finlayson Point — these are two fabulous spots for watching the sunset across the water, back toward Washington's snowcapped Olympic Mountains. A favorite part of the park is Beacon Hill Children's Farm, where you can see and sometimes pet pot-bellied pigs, miniature donkeys, goats and other cute critters. Try to time your visit to watch the ridiculously cute daily goat stampedes at around 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Leave the park by driving east along scenic Dallas Road and Beach Drive, following the curving shoreline and admiring genteel Oak Bay, and then take Highway 17 north to the cute port town of Sidney, which is home to the terrific Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea aquarium.

On the way to Sidney, set aside at least a couple of hours to detour a few miles west on Keating Cross Road to the renowned Butchart Gardens , a 55-acre former limestone quarry on Brentwood Bay that in 1921 was transformed into a series of carefully planned and curated gardens.

Where to stay

Enjoy views of the ferries, yachts and seaplanes that ply Victoria's Inner Harbour from the balcony of your room at the fashionably sleek Inn at Laurel Point (rates start at CA$289 per night), with a Japanese garden, a pool and an excellent Pacific Rim-inspired restaurant, Aura.

Abigail's Hotel (rates start at CA$429 per night) is a luxurious old-world Tudor Revival inn built in the 1930s. It stands out for its attentive service and gourmet breakfasts, and it's close to both Beacon Hill Park and historic downtown.

A scenic 10-minute drive east of the Inner Harbour via famously beautiful Dallas Road, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel (rates start at CA$277 per night) features gorgeously appointed, contemporary rooms as well as three curvaceous heated mineral pools overlooking the sea and San Juan Island in the distance. This boutique resort's Boathouse Spa offers a full slate of ultrarelaxing massage services and body treatments, and since 1954, the Snug Pub has been a beloved spot for waterfront cocktails and casual dining.

With a full-service spa and a superb location steps from Glass Beach and the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea aquarium, the contemporary Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa (rates start at CA$249 per night) is just a short drive from the ferries to the Gulf Islands.

Sooke and Port Renfrew, British Columbia

For a splendid drive along Vancouver Island's verdant and unhurried southern coast, make the two-hour trek to Port Renfrew, which lies literally at the end of the road.

From Victoria, take gently rolling and lushly forested Highway 14 — stopping in Sooke, with its farm-to-table restaurants and posh country inns — and continue as the road hugs the pristine shoreline.

Magnificent vistas of Washington's Olympic Mountains await, and you'll discover several beautiful parks and beaches along the route, including French Beach, Jordan River Regional Park (where you might stop inside the quirky Cold Shoulder Cafe for an Earl Grey latte or a bowl of chanterelle mushroom soup), and Sombrio Beach. At the end of Highway 14, you'll finally come to tiny Port Renfrew, a hub of First Nations culture that lies where the San Juan and Gordon rivers empty into the sea.

Wonderful spots for a stroll include the tide pools and dramatic rock formations of Botanical Beach Provincial Park and Avatar Grove, with its hulking, gnarled old-growth cedars.

You can return to Victoria the way you came, or you can make a half-hour-longer scenic loop through dense evergreen forests to Lake Cowichan and then along the west side of Saanich Inlet.

One of the most acclaimed country inns in British Columbia, the Sooke Harbour House (rates start at CA$429 per night) closed in 2020 in order to undergo a major renovation. As of this writing, the 28-room inn was planning to reopen sometime in early 2024, and the vaunted locavore-minded restaurant — which has drawn foodies since it opened in the late 1970s — will be helmed by celebrated chef Melissa Craig.

A stunning contemporary compound of log-style bungalows perched over the sea or overlooking fragrant gardens, Wild Renfrew Seaside Cottages (rates start at CA$249 per night) sits amid the ancient forests lining Port San Juan Inlet. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, and many have private decks, fireplaces and hot tubs.

More affordable lodgings are found in the nearby motel-style West Coast Trail Lodge (rates start at CA$139 per night), which is owned and operated by the same team. It's just a short walk from either property to the delightful Renfrew Pub , a casual eatery with elevated Canadian fare and expansive water views.

The Gulf Islands, British Columbia

From Swartz Bay, just a 30-minute drive north of Sidney, you can catch frequent ferries to explore the easygoing and incredibly picturesque southern Gulf Islands, which are geologically part of the same archipelago as the San Juan Islands, just across the maritime border with the United States.

Like the San Juans, these emerald isles are sparsely populated and minimally developed, making them ideal for a peaceful getaway amid breathtaking natural scenery. Biking, hiking, fishing and kayaking are prime activities in these parts.

All of the islands covered in this itinerary are served by BC Ferries , but keep in mind that ferry schedules can change often, so always confirm online when boats are running and to where.

A good strategy is to spend a couple of nights on the largest and most populous of the group, Salt Spring Island, and then set aside another day or two to visit up to three more islands set along the main ferry route between Swartz Bay and the mainland town of Tsawwassen: Pender, Mayne and Galiano.

Salt Spring Island

It's an easy 35-minute ferry ride from Swartz Bay to Fulford Harbour, on the south side of Salt Spring Island. The largest of the Gulf Islands, Salt Spring has about 11,600 year-round residents, including a sizable number of artists, makers and other creative spirits. The lively harborside village of Ganges anchors this hilly, agrarian island and contains a wealth of galleries, recreation outfitters, cafes and shops.

For a lovely view of the harbor, grab a seat on the waterfront deck at Moby's Pub , which serves up tasty burgers and local beer. Scenic roads lace the island and access the coastal trails of Ruckle Provincial Park, an excellent place for viewing whales and sea lions in Captain Passage, and Mount Maxwell Provincial Park, where you can drive a gravel road or hike well-maintained trails to 1,175-foot-high Baynes Peak for panoramic island vistas.

Pender Island

The other stops you'll encounter if you choose the multi-island ferry route from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen each have their own distinct personalities.

Easygoing Pender Island (technically North Pender and South Pender islands, which are separated by a short bridge) draws visitors for hikes through the Roesland and Beaumont sections of Gulf Islands National Park Preserve — the 1.6-mile climb to Mount Norman is especially popular.

Reward yourself after a day of outdoor adventures by visiting the sun-filled, contemporary tasting room at Sea Star Vineyard and Winery or sampling the delicious sips at Twin Island Cider.

Mayne Island

With around 1,300 residents, compact Mayne Island is known for the stunning flower beds and carefully tended specimen trees and shrubs at Japanese Memorial Gardens.

On the island's northern tip, spend some time strolling around the 45-foot-tall Active Pass Lighthouse — the tree-shaded grounds overlooking the pass between Mayne and Galiano islands are a memorable spot for a picnic.

Galiano Island

About 17 miles long, narrow and undulating Galiano Island is a top draw among fans of wildlife viewing — you can spy everything from bald eagles and cormorants to seals and orca whales from the shores of this serene isle that abounds with hiking preserves and quiet pebbly beaches.

Bellhouse Provincial Park and Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park are among the best places to take in the splendid natural scenery. The island also boasts a top-notch golf course, and you'll find a handful of endearing shops and eateries within walking distance of the ferry terminal at Sturdies Bay.

Offering country-chic sophistication and a peaceful setting amid 22 acres of gardens and woodlands on the edge of Salt Spring Island's main village, the Relais & Chateaux-branded Hastings House Country House Hotel (rates start at CA$525 per night) offers the ultimate Gulf Islands splurge. The 18 bungalows and suites come with sumptuous touches like fresh floral bouquets, fireplaces and full gourmet breakfasts. Facials and massages in the warmly appointed Wellspring Spa incorporate local herbs, and the outstanding restaurant serves seafood, lamb and produce sourced locally.

Set on the quiet north end of Salt Spring Island, the intimate and romantic Quarrystone House B&B (rates start at CA$290 per night) has four spacious, light-filled rooms with Jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, and patios or decks with sweeping westerly panoramas across the water. The three-course breakfasts feature house-made jams and local cheeses, eggs and meats.

On South Pender Island, consider overnighting at Poets Cove Resort & Spa (rates start at CA$220 per night), a wood-frame Arts and Crafts-style property nestled beneath a pine-dotted hillside overlooking Bedwell Harbour Marina. With a mix of villas, cottages and conventional hotel rooms, Poets Cove is known for its relaxing spa, complete with a eucalyptus steam cave and hot tub. There are three restaurants, too.

On the low-key east side of the isle, Mayne Island Resort (rates start at CA$139 per night) has both posh contemporary villas and cottages and moderately priced standard rooms in the original 1912 main lodge building. The resort is home to the convivial Bennett Bay Bistro, a memorable spot to sup on local salmon, prawns and scallops.

On Galiano Island, you can watch ferries and pleasure boats come and go from an airy glass-walled room at the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa (rates start at CA$234 per night) overlooking scenic Sturdies Bay. Madrona del Mar Spa offers an array of organic skincare treatments, and e-bike rentals are available if you'd like to give the car a rest.

Nanaimo and Tofino side trip

If you're up for seeing more of Vancouver Island, one option is to depart Salt Spring Island by ferry from the Vesuvius Bay terminal and then drive from Crofton to the laid-back coastal city of Nanaimo, which is home to a handful of notable attractions, including the engaging Nanaimo Museum , which touches on the region's rich First Nations heritage and coal-mining heritage, and the bustling Harbourfront Walkway, a scenic pathway that fringes the city's colorful waterfront and offers easy access to a number of nearby restaurants and shops.

Be sure to treat yourself to a Nanaimo bar, the local chocolate layered confection that's adored throughout British Columbia. You can find these all over town, with Mon Petit Choux Bakery — near both the Nanaimo Museum and the Harbourfront Walkway — serving some of the best.

It's a three-hour drive from Nanaimo, via highways 19 and 4, through prolific logging towns and across the Pacific Coast mountains to secluded Tofino , a nature lovers utopia that fringes Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and enjoys a magical, windswept setting where Clayoquot Sound meets the sea.

This is one of Canada's most enchanting small towns, a wonderful place to embark on dramatic hikes through misty temperate rainforests and to set out on sea-kayaking, whale-watching and fishing tours.

Although inhabited by only around 2,500 residents, Tofino has a thriving art and culinary scene, including some of the province's most acclaimed restaurants — Wolf in the Frog and Shelter are a couple of standouts.

Although it's a 15-minute drive northwest of Nanaimo's colorful harbor, the 62-room Inn on Long Lake (rates start at 239 Canadian dollars per night) enjoys a relaxing setting on a gorgeous lake with kayak and paddleboard rentals. Many of the spacious, modern rooms face the water.

If you'd prefer spending the night right in the heart of the city, the 15-story Coast Bastion Hotel (rates start at CA$215 per night) offers sweeping views of the neighboring Port of Nanaimo and the surrounding Salish Sea and mountains — try to book a room on a high floor for the best vistas. Amenities include a popular seasonally focused restaurant with harbor views and a well-equipped fitness center.

Part of the exclusive Relais & Chateaux association, the casually elegant Wickaninnish Inn (rates start at CA$620 per night) has one of the most alluring settings on the islands — during the winter months, the 75 cushy rooms are ideal for storm-watching, but it's spectacular here year-round. The resort's Pointe Restaurant serves artfully prepared fresh-caught seafood in an airy dining room with grand vistas of the sea. The Princess Royal, the sister of King Charles, is scheduled to visit British Columbia next month.

Princess Anne and her husband, Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, will attend a series of events during the three-day trip starting on May 3, including a commissioning ceremony in North Vancouver for the HMCS Max Bernays, the third of Canada’s new arctic patrol vessels. That will be followed by an overnight trip on the vessel as it heads back to its home port at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt.

While in Greater Victoria, the itinerary includes a visit to the archives and collections space of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia in Victoria, which was founded with an initial donation by the princess’s late father, Prince Philip.

Princess Anne is scheduled to attend a commemorative service marking the Battle of the Atlantic at theB. C. legislature and lay a wreath.

A statement from the Office of the Lieutenant-Governor says the weekend will also feature a visit to the Military Family Resource Centre where Princess Anne will meet with service members and their families.

It says she will also meet with Janet Austin, B.C.’s lieutenant-governor, and various community leaders from the province.

Disney World Just Won Its First-ever Michelin Star for This Swanky Restaurant

Victoria & Albert’s just made history for Disney.

Celebrations are in order for Orlando’s burgeoning dining scene, as Disney announced it earned its first Michelin star for the property’s contemporary fine dining hot spot Victoria & Albert’s. In doing so it has become the first and only restaurant owned and operated by a U.S. theme park to receive such a designation, according to Disney Parks' blog .

Known as the “culinary crown jewel” of the mouse’s central Florida property, the coveted restauranthelmed by chef Matthew Sowers is just steps from Magic Kingdom, located inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by Michelin for the innovative dining experience our team brings to life here at Victoria & Albert’s,” Sowers, who has been with the restaurant for nearly 20 years, said in the announcement. “Everybody on our team earned this Star, from our stewards to our culinarians to our pastry chefs, and we hope to inspire future generations of culinary professionals to follow their dreams.”

As a bona fide culinary destination, Victoria & Albert’s has welcomed guests for over two decades and recently underwent royal renovations . The multi-course, multi-hour experience is hosted in an intimate dining room that takes inspiration from Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Celebration and has subtle Disney touches, like a brass pumpkin from "Cinderella."

While you won’t find any grey stuff, the ever-evolving tasting menu reflects seasonal bounties and offers “extraordinary flavors and the highest quality of ingredients from across the world.” A plant-based menu is available for those with dietary restrictions. 

Its elevated eats are complemented by drink pairings, including a zero-proof menu and a robust selection of globally sourced waters . Victoria & Albert’s has an award-winning wine program with over 500 different selections, spanning 35 global regions. For the ultimate splurge, a tucked-away chef’s table can accommodate six guests and offers a front-row seat to the kitchen.

It takes a remarkable team to earn such a high honor. Sowers is joined by a team that includes executive chef Kevin Chong, pastry chef Ally Rogers, culinary director chef Scott Hunnel, and maître d’hotel Sommelier Israel Perez. “Just like a dance, there are many tiny steps that come naturally after years of dedication,” Perez said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure . “Everything is done with purpose, and it is beautiful when the tempo is perfect.”

The applauded restaurant is not new to such accolades: it was previously awarded the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence and Florida Trend Golden Spoon Hall of Fame – American Regional. It also holds the honor of being the only location in Florida to have both Forbes Travel Guide Five Star and AAA Five Diamond awards.

The Michelin Guide began honoring central and southern Florida restaurants in 2022. Victoria & Albert’s joins 26 other Michelin-star restaurants in Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. Reservations are limited at Victoria & Albert’s and must be made in advance. Pricing begins at $295 per guest and children are not permitted. 

Inside the Vancouver Canucks’ team plane during a breakthrough season

Flying on an NHL team’s charter plane is a one-of-a-kind experience. The amenities and perks are five-star. There’s a distinct camaraderie in traveling with teammates as well as some traditions and guidelines to consider.

Dressing for flights, for example, has quirks. The collective bargaining agreement requires that players wear jackets, ties and dress pants while traveling to and from games. But since teams are relaxed with this rule once players have boarded the plane, it can result in a hilarious scene minutes before takeoff.

“I remember my first (dad’s) trip (in the NHL), we get on the plane, all of a sudden guys start whipping their clothes off (and changing into sweats) and it’s like ‘What are you guys doing?’” said veteran defenseman Ian Cole .

“Long trips like three hours (or longer), you don’t wanna be sitting in your dress pants and a dress shirt,” he explained. “It’s pretty funny seeing 20 guys on the plane just shedding all their clothes as fast they can.”

Players then change back into their formal attire before deplaning. It’s just one example that shows how an NHL player’s charter plane experience isn’t a typical travel day.

As the Vancouver Canucks embark on the most pivotal trip of the year to date for Games 3 and 4 in Nashville of their first-round playoff series, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s been like on the team plane this season.

First-class seats, top-notch dining and special recovery tools

The Canucks are serviced by Air Canada’s Jetz division. Their aircraft features two first-class-sized seats on each row, two card tables and space in the exit row for recovery work. It’s comfy and spacious.

“Being a bigger guy, the bigger seats obviously are nice for me,” Tyler Myers said with a laugh. “We have the same flight attendants all year and they get to know you, you get to know them really well. They know exactly what we want when we get on the plane.”

Veteran players typically sit near the back, whereas players with fewer NHL seasons under their belt are farther up.

Brock Boeser explained that the team caters food from the airport when leaving Vancouver. During the rest of a road trip, plane meals are from a high-quality restaurant in the city where they’ve just played.

“The meals on the plane are nice, (especially) compared to stopping at the gas station after the games for food (in the minors),” said Dakota Joshua , who’s also experienced the much more unglamorous travel in the AHL and ECHL.

Some players like Conor Garland are fairly regimented about what they eat on board.

“I usually try to get a salad,” said Garland. “I don’t like the chopped salad but sometimes you gotta eat it. I eat the nuts, chopped salad and I bring my own coffee.”

Others like Phil Di Giuseppe like to rotate through dishes like steak, fish or pasta.

“Huggy’s ( Quinn Hughes ) by me and he’s always snacking on something,” said Boeser. “He’s a health nut.”

Another perk of flying on a charter aircraft is that the exit rows have space for players to do recovery work. This includes tools such as blood flow recovery (BFR) or Normatec technology, which is marketed to increase circulation and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness.

“BFR is good for your legs, you can jump on those for a bit, maybe for 25 minutes. You can lay down, stretch,” said Garland. “Anything you really need, they’ll get it for you on the plane recovery-wise.

“(Mark Cesari, Canucks strength and conditioning coach) and Alex Trinca (Canucks director of sports performance) are great, even if you have a question about like ‘What should I be drinking on the flight?’”

The card table: ‘Too much bickering’

How do Canucks players pass the time on flights? It varies.

Joshua tries to take a nap because he doesn’t like plane rides, but most players said they have trouble falling asleep.

“It takes you like 5-6 hours (after a game) to try to decompress and calm the central nervous system down,” said Cole. “There’s not a ton of sleeping going on unless it’s a long flight from one side of the continent to the other.”

There are book readers (such as Cole), movie watchers and players who rely on iPads to keep them entertained.

“Garly’s pretty chatty,” said Boeser. “He’ll always be in the aisle talking to other people. A guy that’s pretty dialed in on his laptop is Casey (DeSmith), I don’t know what he’s doing on there.”

“He’s pretty wild on the plane,” Joshua added about Garland.

There will usually be a group of Canucks playing cards for small sums of money, too.

“I’ve been on some teams where it (the money being wagered) gets real aggressive,” said Cole. “It’s not that aggressive here, which is good. We’ve got some boys trying to rein it in a little.”

The players have shuffled throughout the year, but Garland, Sam Lafferty , Filip Hronek and Pius Suter were at the card table early in the season playing a game called 13 Up.

“The highlight of the trips is getting to laugh at the card table,” said Garland. “In Arizona, my card table was my three best friends. it’s been new this year with guys you didn’t know before. Usually you end up going for dinner with those guys because you end up making plans on the plane.”

J.T. Miller and Boeser retired from the card table after spending most of last season with the group.

“(We were) taking too much of their money,” Di Giuseppe joked when asked why Miller and Boeser left. “No, I think they were saying they were playing for so long that they wanted to watch some movies. Maybe it was because of me.”

“Too much bickering,” Boeser said with a smile, explaining his departure.

Garland claimed that he’s been cleaning up this season because the newcomers aren’t very good.

“We have a bad table,” he said. “Last year, Millsy’s a really good player, (Jack) Studnicka was a good player. Boes is OK. This year they’re bad, so it’s pretty easy.” He acknowledged that Di Giuseppe’s “not bad.”

“I’m surprised he said I wasn’t bad, usually he gives it to me,” Di Giuseppe said with a chuckle.

“After a game, I like playing at the table because we’ll dissect the game. That’s another way to flush it out is if it’s good, everyone’s happy and you’re shooting the you know what. And if it’s bad, you just kinda let out the demons.”

The Nintendo Switch turned movie club

At the start of the season, Boeser bought Nintendo Switches and formed a group that would play a PGA Golf video game. Miller and Elias Pettersson were the other regulars, with Myers and Thatcher Demko joining once in a while, according to Boeser.

“It’s one of the only games that most guys would enjoy and play against each other,” said Boeser. “We’re all even right now. Nobody gives strokes yet.”

They still play every so often but over the season, it’s transitioned into a movie club.

“Millsy and Brock were just so much better than everybody else that they just kinda cut us out. They were just being really bad guys doing that,” Myers laughed. “Movie club kind of took over.”

The players will synchronize their iPads together to start a film at the same time. They take turns choosing the movie.

Who’s the best and worst at picking them?

“Best is between Demmer and I. Worst is between Brock and Millsy,” said Myers. “Millsy is a good movie guy but he has a tough time grasping the concept of what types of movies we’re trying to bring into movie club.

“Demmer and I seem to be quality control and Brock isn’t as familiar with movies so he tends to bring in a lot of random ones that probably would never make Demmer and I’s list.”

Forgotten passports and unwritten rules

Most of the Canucks’ plane rides are routine, but The Athletic was curious if the players could share any funny or unique travel tales from this season.

Boeser immediately turned when he heard the question, stared at Joshua in his dressing room stall and smiled: “Just Dak holding us up this year for 45 minutes.”

“Who forgot their passport?” Brock continued while still looking at Joshua.

“Bainsey! (Arshdeep Bains),” Joshua replied.

“Yeah, Bainsey, we had a preseason game going to Seattle and he forgot his passport so that was pretty funny,” said Boeser.

Speaking of passports, crossing the border and clearing customs is something players like to groan about because it adds another layer (and time) to the trip.

“If (it’s another Canadian team) you’re just pulling up to the plane but since you gotta go over the border it’s more of a hassle. It’s not that bad, but we like to complain about it,” said Joshua.

Once players board the plane, there are a couple of unwritten rules for etiquette.

“You can’t take a poop on the plane,” said Cole.

Cole also said that when the team gets off the plane or bus they’ll typically exit from the back forward, with veteran players off first.

“But it’s also not a hard and fast rule,” he explained. “If someone steps up and goes, whatever. Or if someone’s taking a while, guys go, it’s never like a ‘Hey, you guys need to wait.’”

Vancouver’s travel over an 82-game schedule is grueling, with substantially longer flights on average compared to Eastern Conference teams. For example, the trip between Vancouver and Nashville is by far the longest distance of any first-round series. Their travel situation is a disadvantage the Canucks have to accept, but they try to make the most of it.

“It’s a pretty chill group, we’re not the ’86 Mets on the plane, you know?” Joshua said with a laugh.
”We just go about the business, get on and get off.”

With the Canucks arriving in Tennessee on Wednesday, they’re preparing for arguably their biggest challenge yet. Many of Vancouver’s core players will be playing in front of an intimidating road playoff crowd for the first time, Demko remains out with an injury and the series is tied 1-1 after a Game 2 loss .

It’s a season-defining trip — and the result will swing the mood of the flight home to Vancouver after Sunday’s Game 4 for better or worse.

Victoria fuller takes girls trip to los angeles with christen whitney after breakup with greg grippo.

Bachelor Nation fans saw Greg Grippo and Victoria Fuller make their first official appearance as a couple at the Season 8 “Bachelor in Paradise” finale.

The two went strong for over a year and frequently shared couples content on social media.

Over the past few months, fans have started to wonder if the two had split because they hadn’t appeared on each other’s pages since last fall.

Then, earlier this week, Greg confirmed their split , sharing that they “ended things” and that it is “really sad.”

Now, Victoria shared how she’s healing her heart with her Bachelor Nation BFF Christen Whitney by her side.

The two ladies took a trip out to sunny California as Victoria moved through the breakup blues.

Victoria took to TikTok to share a video from their trip and started off with a voiceover that says, “Remember, catch flights, not feelings,” and she went on to V.O. that she needs “a six-month holiday twice a year.”

Victoria and Christen filmed the TikTok throughout their trip at different locations, like the beach, restaurants, shopping on Rodeo Drive, and more.

Christen also took to Instagram to share photos from the trip, writing that it was the “sweetest weekend in Malibu” and that Victoria is one of the “best friends a girl could ask for.”

We love their friendship, and we’re continuing to wish both Victoria and Greg all the best as they navigate this next chapter of life.
