Weather in Vietnam in March

Vietnam is a country with very different climates depending on which area you visit, and whilst there are no dramatic changes in the weather in March, there are still differences in temperature and rainfall across the different regions. You avoid monsoon season in both the north and the south of Vietnam in March, which is one of the reasons this is such a good month to visit.

Temperature

The north of Vietnam is the coolest part of the country in March, with the average temperature hovering at around 19°C and lots of sunshine and clear skies that provide ideal conditions for hiking. Central and South Vietnam are hotter and more humid, reaching up to 29°C and providing the perfect weather for the beach if you’re staying on the country’s coast.

The average water temperature in Vietnam in March is 26°C, which will feel very warm when combined with the hot weather along the coast. 

Clouds and Rainfall

Rainfall varies across the different regions of Vietnam in March, but nowhere sees too much wet weather. Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam usually has only 2 days of rain all month, whilst the north of the country can see over 10 days on average. 

Sunshine Hours

There is plenty of sunshine in Vietnam in March, with around 8 hours of bright sunlight each day in the south and central regions of the country. The north will be much more overcast in March, but still experiences between 3 and 4 hours of bright sunshine each day on average. 

Where to Go in Vietnam in March

Bai Tu Long Bay

If you’re after some beach time during your visit to Vietnam then your first thought may be the famous Ha Long Bay, but even in March this part of the country can be incredibly busy and crowded as temperatures rise and the weather gets better and better. A great alternative is the nearby Bai Tu Long Bay, which is just as beautiful but far quieter and wilder. 

Making up almost three-quarters of the Halong Bay World Heritage Site, Bai Tu Long Bay presents visitors with a range of different islands edged with beautiful beaches and covered in lush scenery. Boat trips, sunbathing and picnics are popular activities in the area, but you can also enjoy snorkelling or kayaking in the water or visit one of the local villages and fishing communities. 

The region of Tay Nguyen in central Vietnam is an excellent part of the country to visit in March if you don’t want to frequent the typical tourist traps and are looking to get out and enjoy the warm weather. The area is also often known as the Central Highlands of Vietnam and is famous for its coffee production, and in March the white flowers on the bushes have flowered and look incredibly beautiful. 

The city of Buon Ma Thuot is the capital of the region and a great place to base yourself if you want to explore, particularly if you are a fan of coffee as the city is known as Vietnams ‘coffee capital’. Other attractions in the region include the Yok Don National Park, Dray Sap waterfall and numerous villages that are home to a range of different native tribes.

Visit the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

The Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003 because it contains the oldest mountain in all of Asia, which are thought to have been formed 400 million years ago. It’s a brilliant place to enjoy hiking, but the real highlight is the numerous cave systems which formed along with the mountain and provide an absolutely incredible setting to explore.

Hike on Cat Ba Island

If you’re a hiking enthusiast visiting Vietnam then March is the best time of the year to get out and explore the country on foot, and Cat Ba Island is the perfect place to enjoy a walk. Found in the famous Halong Bay, the island is wild and mountainous and has both easy walking trails available and more challenging routes that will require a guide.

Eat Pho Wherever you Go

Pho is an absolute staple of Vietnamese cuisine, and you are sure to try this dish more than once when you are visiting the country and dining out. Consisting of only four ingredients – clear stock, boiled beef, rice noodles and herbs or green onions – it’s nutritious, filling and a little different wherever you go, which makes sampling it more than once a necessity!

The start of the high season for tourism in Vietnam is March, so if you are wanting to visit the country without lots of other tourists then you’ll want to plan your trip right at the start of the month to get the best chance of seeing Vietnam in peace. It’s also one of the best months for good weather across the country, meaning that everywhere will get busier as March progresses.

The high season for tourism means an increase in prices for accommodation and travel, so it’s a good idea to book your trip in advance if you want to save some money. March is only the start of the high season however, so most places shouldn’t be too expensive yet.

Elephant Racing Festival

Vietnam’s elephant racing festival is held in the 3rd lunar year of the country’s calendar and takes place in Ban Don village in the Tay Nguyen region. The elephant is a very precious animal to the people in this region, and the Elephant Racing Festival is a celebration of the creature and its role in Vietnamese history and folklore.

Elephants are raced in groups of 10 as villagers from the surrounding area come to cheer them on and feed the winners of each race. There are also elephant swimming competitions and games of football or tug of war, and the whole event ends with feasting, music and dance. 

Phu Giay Festival

The Phu Giay Festival is a celebration dedicated to the famous figure Lieu Hanh, who is one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese folk religion. Taking place in the first 10 days of the 3rd lunar month, the festival is held in the Phu Giay Temple in the Vu Ban district of the Nam Dinh province and attracts many devotees of the goddess from across the region.

A range of traditional events take place as part of the festival, including a process, praying and offerings, and activities such as cock-fighting, wrestling, folk singing and dancing.

Living in Vietnam gives me the inside scoop, and I’m here to share my first-hand knowledge about traveling Vietnam in March. 

A year round destination, you can visit Vietnam anytime, but March is ideal for some places more than others – which you will soon discover.

March is a month of weather transitions. In the North, the weather is shifting out of winter and into spring. In Central Vietnam, the rainy season is officially over and days are sunny and warm. And the dry season in Southern Vietnam is coming to a close. As a whole, March is a solid month to visit from north to south, with plenty of opportunities for sun and weather that ranges from cooler in the north to hot in the south.

Typical March Weather in Vietnam

March is the end of the “winter” season in Vietnam, and is a transitional month – especially in the north. From north to south the temperatures are still lower than other months, making it a good month to travel around the country. 

North Vietnam Weather in March

In the northern regions, the month of March shakes off the cold of the previous few months, transitioning to warmer temperatures and less misty/cloudy days. The temperatures increase, ranging from 15 – 22°C (59 – 72°F) though colder in the mountainous areas. The rainfall increases slightly from February.

Central Vietnam in March

Central Vietnam, including places like Da Nang, are officially out of the rainy season. The days are mostly sunny and the temperature averages between 23°C – 28°C (73°F- 82°F).

Southern Vietnam in March

Moving towards Southern Vietnam, places like Ho Chi Minh City are finishing up the dry season and starting to move into the rainy season. March days will be mostly sunny, but as the month comes to a close, prepare for more rainy days, particularly in the afternoons. With temperatures staying around the 25 – 33°C (77 – 91°F) mark. It is hot in Southern Vietnam!

When it comes to rainfall, March in Vietnam is one of the drier months of the year across most of the country.  In Hanoi and the north, expect 10ish days of the month to at least be misty.

In the central and southern regions, expect light rain 2-3 days out of the month, some of the lowest amounts of rainfall for the whole year. If you’re looking to avoid rain (which is almost impossible at any time of year) head to the Central or Southern parts of the country.

Want to know, what are the temperatures in Vietnam in March?

The weather in Vietnam in March is mostly pleasant across the entire country.

• The northern region’s  temperatures hang between 15 – 22°C (59 – 72°F), getting warmer as the month goes on.
• As you move towards the center, temperatures rise slightly to a comfortable 23°C – 28°C (73°F- 82°F), meaning the coast is starting to heat up and you will get some solid beach time in.
• While the southern regions are the hottest, averaging 30°C (86°F). This is the month where temperatures start getting uncomfortable in the south, so prepare correctly. 

No matter where you are headed, check the Vietnam weather for that destination. BUT, be prepared for the weather forecast to be incorrect! It is quite common for the forecast to say one thing and then it is completely different!

There are plenty of weather apps, obviously.  Accuweather  is your best bet for updated weather information to stay up to date with the weather in Vietnam in December . Take note that weather.com doesn’t work in Vietnam.

If you are in Hanoi, it is worth giving  The Hanoi Weather Dude  a follow – he is a local legend of sorts and, I find, is the most accurate predictor of weather around!

Air Quality in Vietnam in March

It may not be something that you would even think to check before going on vacation, but the air quality in Vietnam is worth looking into before you plan your trip.

For some context, Vietnam is currently facing significant air pollution challenges. In 2021, it ranked 36th out of 118 countries for having the dirtiest air. Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the two largest cities, made it to the top 15 polluters in Southeast Asia. The main contributors to this problem are vehicles, factories, construction, agriculture, artisanal production, and inadequate waste management. Now, a week-long vacation in Vietnam will likely not give you any long term health effects. However, it might contribute to the enjoyment of your trip. When the air is particularly bad, you can feel it, see it, and smell it. If you have underlying health issues like asthma it might be smart to make sure you have medicine, or make sure you wear a mask.

I, personally, do not get super affected by the air. I can definitely see it and feel it when it is bad, but I don’t have coughing fits or feel ill like a lot of people. I feel it the most in my eyes (contact wearer) and need to use significantly more eye drops on bad air days.

When talking about the air quality, you will hear people refer to the AQI. That stands for Air Quality Index. There are color ranking and number rankings as well:

In general, the air gets worse in the winter months (December – March). Air is always the worst in Hanoi, no matter what time of year.

Easter in Vietnam

Easter in Vietnam is not as popular as other holidays, but there will be celebrations depending on where you are and what you are looking for. 

Do they Celebrate Easter in Vietnam?

Considering that Christians make up about 10% of the population, Easter is definitely celebrated, just not as big as it is in other countries with more of a Christian population. While Christmas has become a big commercial holiday in Vietnam, that is less so with Easter.

Churches will have Easter Masses, and many hotels that cater to tourists will have special Easter brunches or Easter Egg hunts for kids. 

Should I travel to Vietnam during the Easter Holidays?

Unlike Western countries that have school breaks that coincide with Easter holidays, that isn’t the case in Vietnam! It is not peak season to travel to Vietnam, so it might be perfect if you are coming from a western country with a longer holiday during this time!

Buon Ma That Coffee Festival

If you’re into traveling for coffee , Vietnam as a whole is an excellent choice, particularly in March. Dak Lak (in the Central Highlands) is hosting its 9th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival. It spotlights Buon Ma Thuot Coffee and elevates Vietnam’s coffee scene globally.

In previous years, they had a Coffee Fair focusing on integration, exhibitions on Vietnamese coffee culture and global coffee history, plus a unique Farmer Contest. There’s more – enjoy local festivities like the Lak District Boat-racing Festival, the Buon Don Elephant Festival, and other cultural and sports events. It’s the place to be for all things coffee.

While there is no definite “best places to visit in Vietnam in March, you have plenty of places to choose from. Remember that it is a transitional month in terms of weather, so areas are coming out of the cold, while other regions are heading into the rainy season.

1. Hanoi in March

Considering a Hanoi March trip?

March in Hanoi is when the weather transitions from winter into spring. The beginning of the month, the temperatures will still be relatively low and enjoyable to be outside in. As the end of the month approaches, expect temperatures to start getting hot. 

It rains a bit more this month than it did in February.

For those of us that live in Hanoi, we call the month of March “Moldy March”. It is a month where as the temperatures start to warm up, and the humidity stays high, everything feels wet all of the time. If you do laundry and hang it to dry during March, it stays wet for a long time!

With the mild temperatures, going on a walking tour or biking tour around Hanoi is a great way to see the city. The weather is mild enough that you don’t need a jacket during the day, and it is not so hot that you are sweating the second you step outside.

The Hanoi temperature in March hovers around the 22.5°C (72°F) mark. Days are comfortable with temperatures dropping a bit at night.

What to wear in Hanoi in March?

Since temperatures fluctuate, you’ll definitely want to pack layers if you’re coming to Vietnam this month. What to wear in Hanoi in March would typically involve t-shirts and pants with light sweaters or jackets, especially for evenings and rainy days.

2. Ho Chi Minh in March

Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon, is a busy city and popular tourist destination all year, and March has pretty much the same weather as February, with a few more days of rain at the tail end of the month.

The weather in Ho Chi Minh in March is mostly dry, sunny and warm. It is sunny almost all days, and hot, but not super hot…yet. The month of March is also one of the least humid months, so a bit of a respite from constant sweating.

The Ho Chi Minh temperature in March  typically ranges from 23°C to 34°C (73°F to 93°F), providing slightly cooler relief compared to other months. If the heat affects you, then this could be a good month to spend time in the South. However, by the end of the month, it is getting to peak temperatures. 

For those wondering what to wear in Ho Chi Minh in March, light clothing is all you need. As the end of the month it starts to rain a bit more, a rain jacket would be smart.

3. Da Nang in March

Da Nang and nearby Hoi An are in the central regions of Vietnam, and by March, the rainy season is officially over. Unlike northern Vietnam , the central regions have two seasons: rainy and dry. 

The weather in Da Nang in March is great. The temperatures range  from 21°C to 26°C (70°F to 79°F). The days are sunny and with comfortable temperatures, it is an excellent time to be outside doing all of the exploring!

Da Nang is less touristy compared to its neighbor, Hoi An. But it is my favorite city in all of Vietnam. I love that there is a beach, mountains and a city all within the same city boundaries!

As for the question of what to wear in Da Nang in March, light daytime attire is appropriate, but packing a jacket or sweater for the evenings is probably smart. You will definitely be getting some beach time, so don’t forget your swimsuit!

4. Hoi An in March

Hoi An, just a 30 minute drive from Da Nang, means the weather is the same as in Da Nang. Hoi An is like Da Nang’s more touristy, more traditional Vietnamese neighbor. 

March is a great month to visit Hoi An, as the rice fields are very green!

The temperature in Hoi An in March range from 21°C to 26°C (70°F to 79°F).  The rain is about the same as the end of the February, so not a ton of rainy days. 

5. Phu Quoc in March

If it is a Beach holiday you are after, consider Phu Quoc. It is less touristy for foreigners than other places in Vietnam, but it’s getting more popular! The only difference about Phu Quoc in March compared to February and January is that it is slightly warmer.

The Weather in Phu Quoc in March  is mostly dry with consistently sunny days. It does rain more than it does from Dec-Feb, but you will still likely see mostly sunny days. The dry season in Phu Quoc started in December and continues through the end of March, so March is still in the safe zone in terms of weather.

The chilly, dreary days of January and February will start turning into humid, sunnier days. The beginning to middle of March will still have a good amount of gray days and potential misty rain, but as the end of the month and April nears, sunnier days are coming! The water starts to warm up as well, so jumping into the bay for a swim may be more enjoyable.

Nha Trang is fully in the dry season in March, and temperatures are starting to increase. It rains an average of 3 days out of the month, so rain shouldn’t really be a big concern if you’re heading to Nha Trang in March.

Spring, the season of rebirth and renewal, arrives when March begins. Unlike countries in the temperate and polar zone where March sees snow retreat and gray mushes covering the streets, Vietnam is already in full spring mode for the month of March.

And yet because of the monsoon and the country’s position spreading over multiple latitudes, Vietnam will experience multiple spring patterns. It is very humid with very little rain in the North, quite humid and frequent rain in the Center, and dry with few rain days in the South. If that makes you somewhat confused, welcome to Vietnam!

Although it is not the best time to visit the whole of Vietnam in one trip, you can still pick the best destinations based on the weather patterns and your travel preferences.

Temperature and humidity

The temperature rises steadily from the North to the South, also when you factor in the mist and drizzle, low and high become only relative.

Hanoi and the north are between 15°C and 26°C with very low rainfall but an excess of humidity. If you live in Hanoi long enough, you will get used to the idea of sweating walls and floors. This unfortunately does not give the most pleasant feel to locals and visitors alike. At the same time, expect drizzle and mist for most days in March, which sometimes may obscure your view of mountain and sea. There have been chances that cruises in Halong Bay are cancelled in the past in March due to poor visibility.

The temperature in the Northern mountainous area is not as warm as the Red River Delta, but still a good month for trekking in places such as Sapa and Ha Giang .

The center part of Vietnam, including Hue , Danang , Hoi An, Ly Son and Quy Nhon may not be in their best shape in March either. The humidity can be overwhelming (86% in Hoi An compared with 76% in Hanoi ), but feels better with the ocean breeze and less cramped space. Temperature-wise, it is quite cool compared with April and May, staying between 21°C and 26°C.

Ho Chi Minh City meanwhile is at its best weather of the whole year. Temperature rises up to 36°C but do not get scared by the number. The low humidity, long hours of golden sunshine and occasional breeze all make great reasons to visit.

March Events

Following February, March still offers many festivals held across the country. This is a great time to dig into the cultural aspects of different communities in Vietnam.

Forest Festival of the Nung (Lao Cai)

Hold on the 29th day of the first lunar month, this festival honors two ancient tree gods (Father and Mother trees), and worship people who sacrifice their life for reclaiming the village. The festival combines distinctive contests of traditional singing, swinging and wood chess.

Thay Pagoda Festival (Hanoi)

This festival celebrates Zen Monk Tu Dao Hanh. He is honored as a religious leader who invented traditional Vietnamese water puppetry. Therefore, this festival, which is held annually, is a vivid combination of religious rituals and traditional water puppetry performances.

Chu Dong Tu Festival (Hung Yen)

Celebrated from the 10th to the 12th day of the second Lunar month with a number of parades and outdoor activities, this festival worships Chu Dong Tu - one of Vietnam's Four Immortal Figures -  who taught the locals how to fish, weave and do business to make a living.

Elephant Racing Festival (Central Highlands)

Taking place in Don Village, this renowned annual festival gathers the elephants of adjacent villages in different contests of races, swimming, and elephant football. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without feasts and dancing performances in the exotic sound of gongs and drums – traditional music instruments of highland ethnic minorities.

What to Expect

• With humid and warm weather in the North, cool weather in the Centre and dry season in the South, March is considered ideal for trips in the South Central and Southern parts of Vietnam.
• March and April are peak seasons for inbound tourism in Vietnam, coinciding with spring breaks and warmer weather that prompts more visitors to take trips to Vietnam.
• The North is in its festive time, with many celebrations and festivals held across the region following Tet holiday. If you are interested in cultural events, you cannot find a better time than March. Visit Perfume Pagoda and Yen Tu Complex to get a glimpse of Vietnamese's spiritual life.
• Balmy weather, although not with the best visibility, means a great time to trek in Northwest mountain regions. Enjoy the awing vistas of cheery blossoms and plum flowers as you climb uphill.
• Southern beaches make great beach escape as the weather is warm and dry. There are not yet many local visitors which add one more compelling reason to visit.
• Because the peak international tourism season in Vietnam begins in March, many hotels and homestays are full at this time. Hence, guarantee that you make a reservation. Due to high demand, many hotels will charge higher prices in March, and options can be limited and vary to the destinations you choose.

Best Destinations to Travel 

With warmer weather than the preceding period from December to February, March's favorable climatic condition is great for adventure-seekers to explore the Fansipan. The highest peak of the Indochina Peninsula, Fansipan is located in Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, with the nearest access point being  Sapa . If you don't feel fit enough for the long sloppy trail, you can also opt for the Fansipan cable car to reach the top.

An alternative for active trippers is to take an excursion to the land of caves - Quang Binh province , where you can appreciate the world's largest cave -  Son Doong cave . However, the cave is not yet open freely to the public so you need to book a guided tour from the local agent Oxalis - who will also provide food and lodging along the way.

March may also be a lovely time to spend in the Center Highlands area, especially if you want to avoid the crowded been-there, done-that. Explore coffee hills around Buon Ma Thuot right in the most beautiful blooming coffee flower season and learn how the world's finest coffee is made! Don’t forget to make a stop at the Trung Nguyen Coffee Village and learn about the unique kopi luwak of Vietnam (civet, or weasel coffee). Then, you can promptly make an excursion to Ban Don - a renowned ancient village famous for the traditional custom of taming and caring for wild elephants. Since 2018, elephant rides have been removed, giving a place for the more ethical treatment of elephants; travelers now can observe elephants from a distance and feed them as well.

In the South, the weather is just glorious: dry and sunny. The renowned beaches in Phan Thiet,   Mui Ne, Ho Tram as well as the southern islands including  Con Dao and  Phu Quoc remain the best choices for beach lovers across the country. March is especially suitable for diving and snorkeling thanks to the calm sea and great visibility - carpe diem !

The average temperature in northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Nin Binh, Sapa) is around 19°C (66°F) in March, and even cooler in mountain areas (e.g. Sapa). There is low rainfall, and despite drizzle occurring sometimes, you can still expect a lot of sunshine and blue skies throughout the day.

In central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang), the average temperature in March is 24°C (80°F). The coastal area is dry and has plenty of sunshine, it is excellent for beach relaxation. The central highlands area (Da Lat) is a few degrees cooler, so it is a great time to hike and explore.

In southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne), it is warmer still with an average temperature of 30°C (86°F). The weather remains dry, which makes favorable conditions for water sports like diving and swimming, etc.

In March, the weather in Hanoi is mild — neither cold nor hot. You can enjoy bright sunshine most of the day in March. The daily average temperature is around 23°C (73°F). March is still in the dry season , and you are unlikely to meet any heavy rain during this time.

March is a hot time for sunbathing in Mui Ne (east of Ho Chi Minh City) with very warm sea temperatures . The average temperature in Mui Ne in March is 27°C (84°F).

This cape-town offers 14 km (9 miles) of sandy beaches with rock-free and beautiful waters. Mui Ne Beach is known for having strong winds, which makes it a perfect location for kitesurfing .

You can easily extend your Mui Ne trip to Phan Thiet , 15 km (10 miles) away, to enjoy the Red Dunes, which is a unique natural landscape.

What to Wear

March is between the cool and hot seasons in Vietnam, you are suggested to wear light clothing . It's warm/hot in the daytime, but the temperature in the evening is lower.

In northern areas (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Nin Binh, Sapa), you will still feel a little cool in the evening, so bring an extra layer. Generally, shorts, light trousers, T-shirts, light long-sleeve clothes, sandals, and hats are worn.

Rainy days are fewer than 8 everywhere, and any rain doesn't last long . So, it usually isn't necessary to take rain gear with you. A very light raincoat could be kept at the ready in your day bag on cloudy days.

March is also good for water activities in southern Vietnam, so do not forget to bring swimwear. It is wise to wear long sleeves during the day to prevent sunburn when you are not deliberately sunbathing.

Cinnamon and star anise perfume my memories of Vietnam, a country that lodged itself into my palate in fragrant, frenzied bursts. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks. 

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary. 

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

The high season in Vietnam varies according to the region, so you’ll always be able to find a place that feels more secluded from the bustle of crowded beaches or cruise ships. Wet season attracts fewer crowds, says Matthews, which falls from May to October in the north, September to May in the central part of the country, and May to September in the south. 

Visiting during this time has plenty of perks, as you’ll likely be able to save on accommodations and travel costs. Popular restaurants and tours will be less overrun with tourists, offering a rare opportunity to better immerse yourself in the local culture as you tuck into bun cha on a sidewalk stool. However, bursts of rain and cloudy weather can dampen any plans to hike in Sa Pa or cruise along Ha Long Bay — two quintessential experiences you won’t want to miss. 

There are also an abundance of places that remain less crowded throughout the year, says Benjamin Kreuz, general manager of Six Senses Ninh Van Bay — the resort itself is one of them, nestled in a private cove of Nha Trang that became my personal definition of paradise. Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz. 

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities. 

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April. 

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train. 

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators). 

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season. 

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns. 

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts. 

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

Vietnam serves up a generous dose of Southeast Asian magic at any time of year, but some seasons are easier for travelers than others.

A lot depends on what you are looking for from your trip – if it's time on the beach on the central coast, you probably want to stick to the drier months from February to June, before the peak summer crowds arrive; if you're here to go trekking in the highlands, October to March is the optimum season.

It's important to be aware that the weather can vary widely as you travel around Vietnam. The country spans 1650km (1025 miles) from north to south, taking in tall mountains in the north and flat, tropical wetlands in the Mekong Delta . In the north, it can be positively chilly in winter; from December to February, the highlands around Sapa can see snow while the Delta basks at 25°C (77°F).

July and August are the top months for beach lovers

The hot, sticky high season from July to August is the busiest time of year to visit Vietnam, coinciding with favorable beach weather on the central coast. Demand for flights soars, and prices for accommodations can increase by as much as 50% in resort areas such as Danang and Nha Trang . Book flights and hotels well in advance and expect crowds on the sand at all the popular resorts.

The rest of the country is warm and humid, and sunny days are punctuated by spectacular summer monsoon downpours and even the odd typhoon on the coast. This is a poor time of year for visiting the north, as trekking trails turn into quagmires, and Hanoi and Halong Bay are drenched by heavy showers. On the festival calendar, Trung Nguyen (Wandering Souls Day, also known as Vu Lan) in August sees huge spreads of food left out for the spirits.

December to March is the season to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)

Winter in Vietnam tends to be drier and cooler than the sticky summer, and the weather can be downright chilly in the north, particularly at higher elevations. However, this is the perfect time to explore Vietnam's characterful northern and southern capitals, with manageable temperatures and low humidity taking the sting out of exploring Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on foot.

If you want to see more of the country, this is also a great time to head out to the Mekong Delta and the island of Phu Quoc , with warm (not scorching) temperatures and clear skies. As April approaches, however, the mercury starts to climb to uncomfortable levels down south.

Another obstacle to easy travel is the Tet festival – officially, Tet Nguyen Dan – marking the Vietnamese lunar New Year, in late January or early February. The whole country is on the move and prices for transport and hotels shoot skywards. 

In December, the biennial Flower Festival brings fragrant blooms, pageants, wine and music to Dalat , while Buon Ma Thuot's annual coffee festival in March attracts lovers of a good brew. Christmas Day – known in Vietnam as Le Giang Sinh – is a big deal for the Catholic community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Visit from April to June and September to November to avoid the crowds

The low season in Vietnam coincides with the transition from the cool, dry winter to the hot, humid summer and vice versa. From April to June and from September to November, the weather is often unsettled but rarely extreme. You may get days of glorious sunshine, but there will also be days of rain, so pack for both dry and wet weather.

These transition periods are good times to avoid crowds at the sights, save money and explore the whole country, as the weather is not notably awful anywhere. The October to November window is particularly favorable for exploring the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay (and its calmer and less commercial neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay ), with more dry days than wet days and mild temperatures.

There are some good festivals too. Held in Hue in April, May or June, the biennial Hue Festival fills the city's historic citadel with color, music and lights, while the Nha Trang Sea Festival brings a similar party mood to Nha Trang every second June. Vietnamese Buddhists celebrate the life of the Buddha with extravagant street processions in May for Phat Dan – best experienced in Ninh Binh or Ho Chi Minh City. Pyrotechnics enthusiasts of all kinds gather in Danang in June (or sometimes July) for the explosive Danang Fireworks Festival.

In the pre-winter season, aim to be in Hanoi on September 2, as Vietnam National Day brings energetic rallies and fireworks to Ba Dinh Square and boat races to Hoan Kiem Lake . Tasty festival foods appear everywhere for Trung Thu, the Mid-Autumn Festival, in September or October, while dragon boats race on the waterways of the Mekong Delta for the Khmer Ok Om Bok Festival in October or November.

Visiting Vietnam during the typhoon season

Technically, the typhoon season in the Northwest Pacific runs from May to November, but in Vietnam, the biggest risk of storms is from August to September. The country sees four to six typhoons in an average year, marked by heavy rain and strong winds. Occasional severe storms lead to flooding and disruption to transport, particularly by air and sea.

The areas most affected by typhoons are the southern coast and the far north coast (including Halong Bay). The weather tends to be most severe near the shore – inland, you may just get heavy rain and the odd power cut. This is a time to be cautious but not paranoid – monitor weather reports and prioritize land-based activities over boat trips, beaches, and diving.

Sapa is in full bloom at this time of year. The famous trail leading to Giang Ta or Lo Chai villages will be lined with colorful endless terraces. However, it is best for tourists to contact local guides in advance who can communicate with the H’mong or Dao people in the area.

With warmer weather than the previous period from December to February, favorable climatic conditions in March are ideal for adventurers to explore Fansipan. The highest peak on the Indochina peninsula, Fansipan is located in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, with the closest access point being Sapa. If you don’t feel fit enough for the long sloppy trail, you can also opt for the Fansipan cable car to reach the top.

Temperatures in the south are starting to rise although the peak is not expected until later in the month or early April. The weather remains dry and the beaches within easy reach of Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai - as well as the southern islands of Con Dao and Phu Quoc remain the best choices in the country (avg temp: 29 °C). Despite high winds at times, diving and snorkelling conditions continue to be considered good around the island of Con Dao in March.

March in Vietnam is usually warm. Although the perception of warmth can vary depending on the region you are in.

In the north region of the country, including Hanoi and Ha Long Bay , March brings mild and comfortable temperatures, with daytime highs ranging from 19 to 27°C (66 to 80°F). It may not be hot, but it's certainly warmer than the cooler months. Bathing is not common in March in this region due to the cool air and water temperatures.

In the central regions, such as Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An , the weather in March is pleasant and warm. Daytime temperatures usually range from 24 to 30°C (75 to 86°F). This is a great time for outdoor activities and beach visits, making swimming comfortable, especially during the day.

In the south of the country, March is still warm and dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 25 to 34°C (77 to 93°F). It makes it the perfect time to visit bustling Ho Chi Minh City , the tranquil Mekong Delta and the picturesque beaches of  Phu Quoc Island .

Vietnam Travel in March: 5 Best Places to Visit Now

Vietnam begins to open up once more for tourism in early spring in the north, as temperatures are on the rise. Whilst it may be cold in the north of Vietnam at higher altitudes it's warming up elsewhere. In Da Nang City over the Christmas and New Year period it's rather nice, perfect for springtime. Are you planning on Vietnam travel in March? What should concern you the most should be the weather and temperatures.

Those two are a worry because of the variable seasons Vietnam has. Based on where about you are holidaying in Vietnam: the north, central or south region. The weather patterns are different for each region in March:

• north Vietnam, temperatures rising you can typically expect mid-60's Fahrenheit most days with possibly light drizzly rain
• central Vietnam is warmer (expecting highs of 80° Fahrenheit isn't unheard of) than the north with far fewer rain showers
• south Vietnam remains dry and the hottest part of the country: temperatures being as high as the low 90's Fahrenheit

Vietnam's Monsoon Season

Traveling in Vietnam and you seek the warmest climate to enjoy a holiday then the south region is your best bet. But be wary by the end of April in the south of Vietnam, the monsoon is nearing. In fact, it's best to know when to travel and when not to travel in Vietnam, for each region of Vietnam. With a length of 1000km top to bottom, the weather patterns can vary so much. What to expect from Vietnam's monsoon? Vietnam's weather is difficult to predict for the unwary.

Complicated because of a summer monsoon and a winter monsoon. Each region acts in different ways, at different times of the year. It's enough to cause a headache. It's confusing isn't it, but our travel guide will help make sense of it for you. The summer monsoon impacts Vietnam's south region. Heavy rainfall falls on the south, and some parts in central Vietnam. The winter monsoon impacts the northern region with periods of dry, but cold weather.

The summer monsoon arrives in May and hangs around until the middle of October. The winter monsoon follows on, arriving around about November. Lasting through to April the following year bringing near sub-zero temperatures. By the start of March going into April the cold is thawing. In the middle, central Vietnam remains neutral for the most part. You experience a little of both weather patterns to some extent.

The best time to travel to Vietnam?

For March, it depends on what are your expectations. If you want warm weather and beaches, head for the south region. March is the perfect time actually as you avoid any chance of a monsoon in late April. Off the southernmost coast of Vietnam is the Phu Quoc archipelago. The main Island has an international airport with direct flights from Europe. The Islands are also accessible ― only 90 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City, on any domestic flight.

When holidaying on the Phu Quoc Islands in March, expect the "HCMC crowd" (young professionals). They arrive in their droves for weekend breaks. With Phu Quoc being popular with a domestic tourist, that pushes up hotel prices, take note. Knowing you are definitely coming to holiday in the south, for March? Book your hotel a few months in advance for any hope of securing the best hotel.

Best Time for a Ha Long Bay Cruise?

It's possible to arrive in Hanoi in March with plans for experiencing the marvels of this amazing bay. The summer would be more ideal of course but in March, it's doable, nonetheless. The beaches are far less crowded before the summer season takes off in earnest. Although in March there may be some days of passing showers, but it remains warm so no worries. What spring brings to the bay is seeing the bay covered in early morning mist, which has to said is beautiful.

This covering doesn't lift until late morning so it's around for several hours. The preamble before peak season (beginning from April) you expect more humid weather. This is when temperatures begin to soar even more. March time is actually one of the better months to enjoy the bay before the crowds arrive:

• cruising on the bay for sightseeing and visiting the caves
• kayaking and swimming

Is it still cold in the north of Vietnam, by the time March comes around? No, because average temperatures are touching 70°F by the middle of the month. Being out on the bay any time in March is the best time for a Ha Long Bay cruise. It could be that any month of the year is a "best time" for a luxury 3D2N cruise though? Only be aware that the summer months (that's generally April, May, June and early July) can be a lot hotter.

And a lot more crowds too on the beaches, you could face problems finding peaceful relaxation. Ha Long Bay is super friendly for families, with a plethora of activities.

Best Spring Vacation in Vietnam

There are many best places to visit throughout Vietnam. It's such a dynamic country as a whole, and yet ― the north , central Vietnam and south differ. Each region offers a very unique travel experience. For the 5 best places to visit in March, our suggestions are:

• Da Nang City
• the Phu Quoc Islands

1. Da Nang City, and Hoi An Town

This stunning city takes the top spot. Immediately felt once you jump in a taxi bound for your hotel, there's a sparkle in your eyes. Memories flood back of a day spent well at the Ba Na Hills resort outside the city. It's the Golden Bridge as a main feature that captivates you. Excellent panoramic views of the mountainous forests below, for an unforgettable holiday experience. The resort is spot on for families. Child friendly with cafes and quality restaurants, and exciting arcades and theme parks. Visiting at Christmas, the resort is all set up to celebrate the festive period.

Aside from the Imperial City of Hue north of Da Nang, further yet is the excellent Nui Than Tai Hot Springs Park . A great day out for couples and families. In fact, there is far more than the natural hot springs:

• there are sauna facilities and mud baths
• a dinosaurs themed play park
• a waterpark with slides and tunnels, great fun with inflatables
• excellent quality restaurant and gift shop, good portion size and value for money

Da Nang City is perfect for families with kids of all ages. On the weekend, both evenings at around about 21:00 hours the dragon comes to life. This fun event has the dragon breathing fire (for real, it's true), which is awesome. The crowds begin to form an hour before so you must come early to pick out your spot. For 3 minutes, it'll be the best ever time of your holiday in Da Nang. Because no one walks away feeling disappointed, you can believe that.

Pro Tip #1: Take a day or two out of your Da Nang holiday . Travel an hour south to the ancient town of Hoi An for the delights of the Hoi An Lantern Festival .

2. Phu Quoc Islands

You are looking for a beach holiday early in the year, say around Easter time. By all means Phu Quoc Islands will please your curiosity in full. There are 28 odd Islands accessible you can easily reach by hire boat (or a tour paid for in advance). A cable car network also, connecting many of the Islands is available to you. The ride is dependable, safe and promises you spectacular views for miles.

Accommodation on the main Island is world class, or you can opt to stay in any number of the beach front resorts. How long to stay on Phu Quoc? We would recommend at most 3D2N. The Islands have stunning natural beauty, amazing beaches and hidden coves. Lots of small bays to sunbathe and swim. Yet, once you've visited the main attractions (such as the Vinpearl theme park) you will tire.

The Islands are great for a two-day (weekend) escape in the sun but nothing more.

They're that convenient getaway whenever you're in Vietnam, outside the south's monsoon season. It's a place you would want to either arrive:

• first for a Vietnam holiday for a day or two, or
• a place you leave until last before heading back home

The choice is your own of course ― if you can get to Vietnam for Easter then arrive in Phu Quoc:

• before moving on to your holiday proper, or
• depart for home from Phu Quoc's international airport a day before your holiday ends

If you struggle to secure accommodation (last minute booking?) then steer in the direction of Nha Trang City as a best alternative for a beach holiday. The smaller city of Nha Trang has favorable beaches and weather in March. Accommodation there can be cheaper, provided you can overcome last minute hurdles.

3. Moc Chau Town

If you have a great love for the countryside and its natural beauty, put Moc Chau Town on your bucket list. Son La Province is a haven for budding amateur, and especially professional photographers. The town is the perfect starting point. Son La Province, found in northwest of Hanoi City is only 4 hours distant by bus. On one trip we left Hanoi late in the afternoon to arrive in the town by evening. By design we had picked out a guesthouse only a few streets away from the bus station.

You could do the same. Be sure you take an express bus for a) fewer stops, b) free WIFI and charging point, and c) on board toilet. But not every departure is with this premium service, check before paying for the ticket. Tickets aren't expensive (by Vietnam standards), a return costs roughly US$19 per person. The express bus service is always worth paying the extra when traveling in Asia.

Is Moc Chau Town worth visiting? Yes. What is welcoming about being in the north of Vietnam in March is the weather is a lot cooler. Not cold (like how it can be in January), but cool and refreshing. If that sounds good to you then Son La Province is a destination for you to think about. This hidden gem is being discovered more year on year. Likewise, with Gao Bang , further north close to the Chinese border. Both locations are growing in popularity for undisputable beauty:

• the tea plantations and fruit orchids, when blossoming
• the towering mountains and the forests that cover them
• trek or cycle through the forests, seeking out the many villages

It's the perfect land for eco-tourism. A fact that's responsible for a growing boom in tourism to the province. There's as many farms dotted around as there are villages. What we did was to buy fresh fruits of orange, apricots and strawberries for use in a picnic. Then continue on our travels coming to a rest at a quiet place with beautiful views to enjoy. Moc Chau District is one of those places you've never heard about, isn't it? And never would either, from your local travel agent. That is what makes it spellbinding for a 2D1N secret getaway.

Pro Tip #2: For a feeling of "getting away from it all", book your accommodation in one of the villages and not in town. The villagers are welcoming, and your stay contributes much more to their community.

Pro Tip #3: Do not confuse Mai Chau District found in the Hoa Binh Province, with Moc Chau District.

4. Da Lat Town

As temperatures are in the region of 70° Fahrenheit, the town displays flowers in bloom. The area in and around Da Lat is cooler compared further south, so is Da Lat worth visiting? Yes. Because it's renowned as a top destination for couples. Married or not, there's the feeling of love in Vietnam's Highlands waiting for you.

Many tourists to Ho Chi Minh City travel to Nha Trang at some point, and almost always stop off in Da Lat. If you're on the bus route, let the bus leave without you and pick up your journey once more later in the day. Your ticket should be valid for jumping off and on another bus the same day. Check with the driver before paying and setting off. If it's a "no deal" then go as far as Da Lat City.

Afterwards you can get another bus to take you to Nha Trang City.

March is the time of the year the dry season is nearing an end. You can expect a little rain in this month but not as much as what'll arrive in April. Our top things to see and do when visiting Da Lat are:

• walk to the Datanla Falls, and from there on to Elephant Falls
• the Valley of Love
• the Linh Phuoc Pagoda, on the outskirts of the town
• Ho Xuan Huong Lake, center of the town

To get yourself around the town, rent a moped or motorbike. That's the only way you'll make time to see far more attractions, including Love Valley .

5. Sa Pa Town

The Hoang Lien Son Mountain range is a special location less than 10km southwest of Sa Pa Town. It's your choice to book with a tour operator online:

• before leaving on holiday, or
• at the very least once you arrive in Hanoi on day one

If you neglect to do so and chance it, you'll pick up a local guide in town. The latter is risky of course, because most tourists don't book, hoping to grab the first guide they find. What is so beautiful about the Sa Pa experience is not only the natural world but the villagers. Centuries old traditional attire they all wear. The villagers staunchly refuse to wear anything else by the way. Which commands a lot of respect, well it did from us and everyone in our group at least. Traditional crafts passed to a new generation; old women eager with a demonstration. Watch in amazement as they weave their cloth in intricate patterns and color.

The machinery they use, each part comprises of wood it's unbelievable. As our guide explained, the village keeps things simple so they can be self-reliant. Repairs need no outside help. Each person in the village has a skill or use everyone can profit from. Before leaving any village do make a small sale of their crafts, this supports the tight knit community. And you have a quality item to take home as a gift for family and friends.

Pro Tip #4: It's quite possible to head to Sa Pa Town during December for a holiday break. The town undergoes a transformation into a Christmas wonderland because of local festivities. And it often is cold enough for snow.

Final Thoughts

It's telling isn't it, that Vietnam is a country you can visit all year round. One region may not be pleasant and welcoming due to local weather, it's no problem. You trust that there is at least one region safe for a holiday in March. The Vietnam year kicks off in grand style. Their Lunar New Year brings a busy time for Vietnamese people as they head home to spend with family.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage site for nothing because it is the biggest cave in the world, so big that a whole jungle grows inside of it. The cave’s name, meaning ‘Wind and Teeth,’ is inspired by the stalagmites which guarded the entrance of this mighty cave. It also has an underground river, a lake, and water grottos. The view is so spectacular that it would leave one in awe of the marvel that is nature! The caves and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park are warm and suitable for exploration in March.

Only one tour company, Oxalis, offers a four-day getaway to explore this cave; they also have smaller trekking sessions to smaller caves in the same area. Their Son Doong expedition costs VND 69,800,000 per person.

2. Con Dao Islands

Con Dao Island is very similar to Phu Quoc Island, minus the crowd of tourists. Con Dao Island hence ensures a peaceful and private experience. This place is well known for its pristine beaches, natural beauty, and luxury resorts. You can indulge in scuba diving and snorkeling and admire the fascinating coral reefs, relax on the Dam Trau beach, or go trekking in the Con Dao National Park.

The Can Do prisons are located on the Can Dao archipelago and were built by the French in 1861. It was primarily built to imprison people who committed serious crimes and were considered dangerous by the French colonial government. The prison complex is now a popular tourist site, and mannequins have been placed to replicate the brutality experienced by the prisoners. 

You can thus enjoy the beach, trekking activities, water sports, and a history lesson, all enjoying the perfect in March when you visit the Con Dao Islands.

3. Buon Ma Thuot

This is one of the lesser-known destinations in Vietnam, but it is still an amazing place to be in. Not a lot of tourists travel to Buon Ma Thuot, and it may not have a lot of attractions in itself. It is mostly used as a base for outdoor activities and excursions. However, it has quite a few breathtaking attractions, such as the Gia Long, Dray Sap, and Dray Nur waterfalls. The Yok Don National Park has some of the rarest exotic and endangered species. The Lak Lake is also another beautiful attraction. The Ban Don village nearby can be visited to learn about tribal art and architecture. You can also visit the coffee estates near the area, especially the Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, to learn about the civet coffee and savor the delicious coffee with a hint of the chocolate that is produced here.

4. Bai Tu Long Bay

Halong Bay is very popular, whereas the Bai Tu Long Bay is rarely heard of, and that is what makes it an excellent location to holiday in. The very few numbers of tourists visiting have kept in its untouched, pristine glory. The waters are still and beautiful, emerald green. The lime karsts stand tall, and there are very few boats cruising along. Visiting this bay in March means there is no fog, and hence, it is great for photography. However, since it has a protected status, the boats cannot be anchored overnight, and the density of islands is slightly less.

1. elephant racing festival.

Held in Ban Don, the village famous for tribes who tame wild elephants, this annual festival happens in the third lunar month. In the run-up to the festival, elephants are allowed to rest and given an assortment of food like papayas, sweet potatoes, sugar cane, and bananas.

On the day of the festival, the people arrive in their most colorful clothes, and elephants from the nearby villages are brought to participate in various competitions. The running race, which is the most important, sees elephants racing for about a distance of 2-3 kilometers, and the winner is given a laurel wreath. The elephants also take part in swimming races, football, and tug of war. At the end of the day, the people rejoice by feasting, drinking wine, and dancing to some local folk music.

2. Phu Giay Festival

The Phu Giay Festival is celebrated in the Kim Thai village on the first ten days of the 3rd lunar month to commemorate the Mother Saint Lieu Hanh of a popular Vietnamese cult. A procession is carried out on the 5th day of the 10-day festival.

The people believe that this festival brings good fortune. A lot of shamanistic practices are carried out, which attracts superstitious people. A fair is also organized where local products are put up for sale. Devotees wear traditional clothing and offer embellished bamboo relics to the temple of the goddess. Games like lion dances, human chess, capture-the-flag, and wrestling are played during the auspicious festival. People celebrate by singing folk songs, dancing, and taking part in musical theatre.

3. Thay Pagoda Festival

The Thay Pagoda festival is celebrated from the 3rd day to the 7th day of the third lunar month. It is a very religious festival in honor of Buddha and the Thay Pagoda built by King Ly Nanh Tong.

The festival begins with the Buddha bathing ceremony. Monks and nuns clean the statue of Buddha amidst the fragrance of incense and chants glorifying the deity. The bathing water is then sprinkled on the people and things to bring good fortune. The prayer ceremony follows this. Monks wear frocks, hold flower incense sticks in their hands, and perform a ritual circular dance. The devotees make offerings at the altar. Apart from these rituals, the people attending the festival take part in grinding and pounding rice, lion and dragon dancing, water puppetry, and bullfighting scenes. This festival surely puts up a lively spectacle for someone outside of this culture.

Festivals & Cultural Activities in March

In Vietnam , March the transition time of Spring to the Summer. This is one of the best time in the year to discover many destinations in Vietnam with ideal weather suitable for may outdoor activities. In Northern Vietnam, March is not as cold and dry as January and February while it’s warm and dry in Central and Southern Vietnam. Also, in this month, many bustling and important festivals are held throughout the country.

Perfume Pagoda Festival

Quan the am festival – marble mountain, tay phuong pagoda festival, buon ma thuot coffee festival, bauhinia flower festival, which festival take place in march.

Located about 70km from Hanoi Centre, the Perfume Pagoda is Vietnam’s most revered Buddhist pilgrimage site. Travellers can visit the pagoda at any time of year, but the festival is a unique spectacle to witness. Perfume Pagoda (Chua Huong) Festival is the biggest as well as longest festival in the North Vietnam , taking place in three months, starting from 1st to 3rd month of the Lunar Year. People from all parts of the country coming here to pray for luck, health and happiness in the upcoming year.

Normally, the pagoda is crowded with pilgrims at the beginning, and traveling in March (2nd to 3rd Lunar Month) is highly recommended. The pagoda is built into limestone cliffs and can only be reached by boat or on foot, as there are no roads in the area. We will deeply enjoy the attractive mountain views mirror-image in the crystal water mirror of the stream en route and the nice rice paddies on sides. Getting to the main Pagoda on the top of the highest mountain by climbing or cable car, you can admire the beautiful mountainous landscapes and limestone caves.

The Quan The Am (Avalokitecvara) Festival is held from the 17th – 19th days of the 2nd Lunar Month at Quan The Am Pagoda in the Marble Mountains Tourist Area, Danang City .

The Avalokitesvara Festival is an opportunity for interested travelers and Buddhists to come together to honor the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Like other traditional festivals , Avalokitesvara Festival on Ngu Hanh Son consists of two parts. The religious ceremony and the festive part. The former takes place with the rituals of Buddhism. Today, a wide range of activities are held at the festival such as sutra reading ceremony, photo exhibition on Indian Buddhism, visit to the Buddhist cultural museum , incense offering festival to commemorate Princess Huyen Tran, and traditional boat racing festival.

Located in Thach That District, approximately 20 kilometers from Hanoi Centre, Tay Phuong Pagoda is famous for its wooden statues of Buddha. The festival takes place on the 6th of the 3rd Month of the Lunar Year. On the main festival day, locals will celebrate by washing the statues, offering incense. The pilgrimages come to the festival to enjoy the landscape, the architecture of the pagoda and the wooden statues of the 18 arhats as well as take part in traditional games such as puppet-play, tug-of-war, cock fighting, human chess, wrestling, enjoy puppet performances, etc.

Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival is held in early March every two years in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak Province to promulgate Vietnam coffee in general and in Central Highlands in particular.

Being organized for the first time in March 2005, the festival has two main topics including equipment, technology, materials for coffee production and coffee processing. The key characteristic of Central Highlands area is beautiful coffee flowers. March is the peak season of coffee blossoms when it is easy to hang out and picturesque scenes. Therefore, the region is worth your choice of top beautiful place to visit in Vietnam in this month. Take your chance and join the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee festival in March, visitors can taste many great roast/ grinder coffee on the spot. There are lots of tropical fruits and pepper flute here that take your heart away.

Bauhinia Flower (Hoa Ban) Festival is often organized in March (the 2nd Lunar Month) in the Northwest Province of Dien Bien when the Bauhinia flowers are blooming spread white colors on mountains. The festival has a great significance to Thai ethnic people in the Northwest Vietnam, is an occasion for local people to pray for a good harvest, good weather and happiness.

The festival will take place during 3 days. Since early morning, gong sound echoes throughout the mountains. Kitchens in stilt houses are warmed with flickering flames to cook traditional dishes in the festival such as sticky rice, boiled chicken, bamboo shoots. The ceremony is jubilant, dignified, and respectful with processions and worshiping ceremony to the heaven, the earth, and the supernatural forces. The festive part takes the majority of time with contests of shooting muskets, crossbows, Con throwing, and cock fighting…

In particular, in the drum sound of the festival and the circle of people continuously dancing Xoe are almost non-stop. The Northwest of Vietnam with its breathtaking mountains landscapes and colorful hill tribes is the place for a real adventure discovery. Visiting the Northern Vietnam in March and joining the Bauhinia Flower Festival will be an interesting experience. We will have chances to enjoy art performance, culinary contest, and many other activities.

Starting from 0:00 on May 15, all Vietnam destinations are open, no self-isolation is required, and all regulations for SARS-CoV-2 testing required before entering will be temporarily suspended.

Here are critical points of the new guidelines: Visa + travel insurance are now accepted for entry.

VISA EXEMPT

Visitors from the following countries may enter visa free, and stay for the indicated number of days.

• ASIA Brunei, Myanmar - 14 days. Japan, South Korea (ROK) - 15 days. The Philippines - 21 days. Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand - 30 days.
• EUROPE Belarus, Denmark, Italy, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, The United Kingdom - 15 days.

To stay beyond this number of days, you may apply for a visa extension upon your arrival in Vietnam.

VISA REQUIRED

Simply apply online for your tourist E-visa , valid for 30 days. E-visa fee is USD 25, the processing time is 3 working days. You will receive your code by email to print your visa.

Screening centers and health hotlines

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, or are concerned that you may have been exposed, call Vietnam’s health hotline 1900 3228   immediately.

Vietnam has appointed 323 authorized testing facilities to carry out testing and diagnosis of COVID-19. See the full list .

Health requirements

Incoming travelers need to follow the below guideline from the Ministry of Health :

Starting from 0:00 on May 15, temporarily suspend pre-entry SARS-CoV-2 test requirements.

No requirement for quarantine.

Within 10 days from the date of entry: self-monitor your health, if you have symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection (fever; cough; sore throat; runny nose, stuffy nose; body aches, fatigue, chills; decreased or lost taste; decreased or lost sense of smell; pain, headache; diarrhea; difficulty breathing; respiratory inflammation...) must immediately notify the nearest medical facility for instructions.

These are based on guidelines from the Ministry of Health .

How to Apply for Vietnam's e-Visa:

Step 1:  Prepare the required materials:

• One 4x6 passport photo in .jpg format with a white background, without glasses.
• One photo in .jpg format of your passport data page.
• A passport is valid for at least six months.
• Your temporary address in Vietnam and points of entry and exit.
• Debit or credit card for payment.

Step 2: Click this link or access https://immigration.gov.vn/ and go to 'E-visa Issuance' then click on the link for 'Outside Vietnam foreigners'.

Step 3:  Upload your .jpg images (passport data page and passport photo) and fill out the required fields on the form completely. Submit your form.

Step 4: Pay the e-Visa fee of 25 USD. Copy down the document code provided.

Step 5: Within three working days you should receive news of your e-Visa application via email. If not, you can also run a search for your e-Visa at this link .

Step 6: Use your document code to locate your e-Visa online. Download and print the e-Visa in two copies for extra safety.

TIP: Travelers with an e-Visa can go directly to immigration counters at their point of entry and do not need to queue at Visa on Arrival counters.

Insurance requirement: 

Purchase medical/travel insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment with a minimum coverage: $10,000. This typically costs about USD 40.

Health checks on departure

Domestic travel: Travelers are required to:

• During 10 days from the date of entry, tourists are requested to continue to self-monitor health. If having signs and symptoms of SARS-COV-2, must immediately notify the nearest medical facility.
• Comply with the Ministry of Health’s 4K message: khau trang (face masks), khu khuan (disinfection), khoang cach (distancing), khong tu tap (no gatherings).
• Currently, domestic flights restrictions have been reduced until the new update. However, please notice that all requirements might have resulted in changes requirements of the different destinations.

International travel: These follow the guidelines and procedures published by the country you are returning to.

Health and safety precautions for travelers

Visitors to Vietnam are encouraged to take sensible precautions against COVID-19 during their trips.

The World Health Organization outlines these basic practices to keep yourself and your loved ones safe:

Avoid traveling if you have a fever and cough.  If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, alert health-care services and share with them your recent travel history.

Maintain social distancing. Stay a meter or more away from others, especially those who are sneezing or coughing, or have a fever. 

Wash your hands regularly with soap and running water. You can also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to spray your hands frequently.

Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of dirty tissues immediately and wash your hands after coughing or sneezing. 

Avoid contact with live animals. Wash your hands with soap and water if you touch live animals or animal products in markets.

Eat only well-cooked food. Make sure your meals, especially animal proteins and dairy products, are thoroughly cooked and prepared in a sanitary environment. 

Discard single-use masks.  If you choose to wear a single-use mask, ensure it covers your nose and mouth, avoids touching the mask, and wash your hands after removing it.

Marking National Vietnam War Veterans Day in Hawaii

H ONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - March 29 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day and a time to honor those who fought to defend democracy in the long and divisive conflict from 1955 to 1975.

Several events in Hawaii are being planned this Friday, including a morning ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and an evening parade in Waikiki.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet and Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 858 are hosting the Punchbowl ceremony at 10 a.m., which will honor two Medal of Honor winners for their service and feature speeches by Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Sam Paparo and other distinguished speakers.

Later at 4:30 p.m., a pre-parade ceremony will take place on Kuroda Field at Fort DeRussy Beach Park, with the procession starting at Saratoga Road at 6 p.m. and ending at Kapiolani Park.

VVA Chapter 858 is the only Vietnam Veterans of America chapter on Oahu and has more than 200 members.

Chapter member, Vietnam vet and retired Navy chief Pat Suenaga joined HNN’s Sunrise Weekends to talk about the events and explain why it’s important to remember what happened during and after the Vietnam War.

“A lot of young men joined the service, went to Vietnam, didn’t know what was going on and they came back and never got recognized for their service at the end,” Suenaga said. “As a young 18-year old, you’re not going to understand what happened. You served your country. There was only a few of us that served, and they died for our country.”

Suenaga said he joined the Navy with the Navy’s First All Hawaii Recruit company near the end of the Vietnam War, which was sworn in by COMPACFLT in front of Iolani Palace in the early 70s, with Lt. Gov. Ariyoshi, Mayor Fasi, Emma Veary and the Mayors from the neighbor islands in attendance.
