The best hotels in Belfast

By Anna Cafolla

Harrison Hotel

Whether you’re enamoured with Kenneth Brannagh’s seven-time Oscar-nominated movie Belfast , a Game of Thrones fan for life, a serious history buff or foodie scene-spotter, there are a myriad of reasons to fall in love with Northern Ireland and its thriving capital. Rather than a turbulent political landscape or dragons traversing the skies, you’ll be met by a vibrant, welcoming Belfast. With the mighty Black Mountain and rocky Cavehill overlooking the grand Edwardian architecture, there’s a city dappled with a restaurant circuit that punches well above its weight, a colourful art scene, and raucous nightlife culture where ‘the craic is always 90’.

When you’re done exploring the Victorian Botanic Gardens and tropical ravine, sampling the local fudge and cheese wares of St George’s Market, and bar-hopping on the famous cobbled streets of the Cathedral Quarter, where are you to lay your head? Here’s our pick of where to stay on your trip to Belfast.

Harrison Hotel

The Harrison

The Harrison is housed in sublimely restored Victorian merchants' residences that date back to 1879. Its 16 rooms have distinct personalities, and highlight owner Melanie Harrison and her house’s playful aesthetic: bathtubs in the bedrooms, thick velvet curtains, and dramatic antique furnishings. It oozes character and fun – check the C.S Lewis and Aristocrat rooms for true period style interiors. Melanie and her friendly staff are on hand to provide curated itineraries and city guides for those staying (ask for ‘Mel’s map’ for picks of the best bars and restaurants), as well as special package offers on rooms that include tandem bike outings, picnics, and whisky experiences. This is one for the culturally curious visitor too, as The Harrison is close to The Lyric Theatre, Ulster Museum, The Frank Matcham-designed Grand Opera House, and Queen’s Film Theatre. Green spaces like the Botanic Gardens and Ormeau Park are also close by, as well as the famous Maggie May’s for an Ulster Fry (extra potato bread), but you might not want to venture for long outside the opulent walls when The Harrison’s in-house Spa with Nola is available for facials and massage.

Merchant Hotel

The Merchant Hotel

The Grade A-listed Merchant Hotel’s magnificent front steps have graced plenty of Instagram grids. They’re famous for their afternoon tea with delectable homemade scones and Merchant blend tea (with vegan and vegetarian menus too) set in its Victorian high-ceiling Great Room underneath a huge chandelier. The Merchant houses several bars and restaurants – The Cloth Ear is a quintessential twist on the traditional Irish pub, while Bert’s is Belfast’s only dedicated jazz bar with a French bistro menu and a globe-trotting cocktail list that celebrates 1920s glamour. Its rooms – some Art Deco-inspired, others taking from the Victorian period – are spacious and bright, nodding to furnishings of each period. The Art Deco rooms feature furniture from iconic designers including Eileen Grey and Le Corbusier, as well as specially commissioned art.

Its spa offers five tranquil treatment rooms, a relaxation room, and a hydrotherapy area, incorporating luxurious brands like VOYA and Elemis into its extensive list of treatments. The Merchant particularly caters to golfers too, with equipment cleaning, storage, and handling on-site, as well as transfers to courses of choice in the region.

Titanic Hotel

Titanic Hotel

The 119-room boutique Titanic Hotel resides in the former headquarters of the Harland & Wolff headquarters and printing room, where the blueprints for the fated Titanic ship were drawn up. A legendary location in the heart of the Titanic Quarter, rooms look out onto the expansive slipways, where the ship first set sail, and the iconic Belfast yellow cranes Samson and Goliath. The rooms lean into the nautical setting, with bright Art Deco interiors. An exclusive art and heritage collection includes over 500 artworks and photographs, passenger portraits, and White Star Line memorabilia for a time-travelling experience. The in-house restaurant, The Wolff Grill, uses fine locally sourced ingredients and was named Ireland’s Hotel Restaurant of the Year by the Irish Hotel Awards. Intimate cocktails can be shared at the island bar of the Drawing Office Two below a stunning, three-story high barrel-vaulted ceiling. Eye up the authentic interior features, including the Villeroy & Boch tiles on the main bar – the same ones used for Titanic’s swimming pool and first-class bathrooms.

It’s a premier spot for weddings and events, and hotel stay packages also include a holistic yoga retreat option, guided historical tours, and passes to the Titanic Belfast attraction. A two-minute walk will take you to Titanic Belfast, with full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features that explore the story in thrilling detail.

The Culloden Estate and Spa

The Culloden Estate and Spa

Set just outside of Belfast on the edge of affluent and sea-salty Holywood and with stunning views of the Antrim coastline, The Culloden Estate and Spa is a traditionally elegant hideaway. It was originally built as an official palace for the Bishops of Down and comprises 12 acres of vibrant gardens. 98 bedrooms and suites are individually designed – Estate Suites are perfect for entertaining a group, with high ceilings, fires, and dining areas for up to six people. Three Tower Suites have uninterrupted views of the lough, doubly high ceilings, and plush furnishings for the feeling of ultimate luxury.

It’s a dreamy wedding and events space, but also a must for anyone looking for deep breaths of fresh, Celtic air and relaxation. Though you get the full rural retreat experience, it’s only 10 minutes away from Belfast City Airport by car, 40 minutes to the International Airport, and 20 minutes into the city centre.

There's a traditional Irish inn on the estate grounds where hotel guests and locals go for pub-grub, while the in-house restaurant Vespers serves more modern Irish cuisine in a Gothic-grandeur setting. Top tip: the midweek spa escape offers are reasonably priced, with access to the central swimming pool, linear vitality pool, and ESPA spa with steam room and hammam.

The Malone Hotel

The Malone Hotel

The recently renovated boutique Victorian townhouse hotel is a bit of an open secret in Belfast, hidden away in the leafy avenues of south Belfast, yet mere steps from the bustling shopping haven, the Lisburn Road. The hotel prides itself on its history and family hospitality – it was first opened in 1945, as ‘The Bowness’, and for over three decades, the Macklin family have developed its reputation. The Malone Hotel runs the gamut for hotel guests of all kinds – city breakers, couples, and corporate events will find solace in its function rooms, new Gallery Restaurant, and upgraded Greyhound bar. Executive chef Andrew McConnell has curated a menu that celebrates seasonal produce with Irish flair, with a wine and cocktail list that centres on Northern Irish spirits. Expect local, fresh salmon and wheaten bread on the breakfast menu, and a perfectly poured Guinness to go with the craic-filled ambience of the bar.

Bullitt Hotel

Bullitt Hotel

Bullitt is among the younger, hip hotel upstarts in Belfast’s city centre, a part of the Beannchor group which brought the city its flagship, five-star Merchant Hotel. It has 74 chic and compact rooms slap bang in the centre of the city, but even its ‘Dinky’ two-sleeper has a lush king-size to sink into. No-nonsense, no-frills, yet still fun and stylish – it’s named and themed after Steve McQueen’s 1968 neo-noir action thriller of the same name, which inspires the McQueen-style artworks and dark, cinematic interiors.

The Taylor & Clay restaurant, led by head chef Saul O’Reilly, makes good use of a bespoke Asador wood-fired grill for some impressive steak and seafood options. The wine selection is also inspired by what goes on the grill – the Argentinian Malbec is a crowd-pleaser. A stunning, panoramic view of the city is to be had at Babel, Bullitt’s rooftop bar and garden, enjoyed with a wide selection of gins, while the open Courtyard hosts evening DJ sets and acts as a hangout for people watching with a signature Espresso Martini.

The Fitzwilliam

The Fitzwilliam

Enter into the dramatic lobby and be greeted by a roaring fire at this five-star city centre destination, The Fitzwilliam. The rooms are contemporarily styled, with duck down duvets and Egyptian cotton sheets. Great British Menu ’s Gemma Austin rose through its restaurant kitchen as a pastry chef, so you won’t want to miss the delectable afternoon tea. The Fitzwilliam’s proximity to the Grand Opera House, Lyric Theatre, Ulster Hall, and Accidental Theatre make it a strong choice for culture lovers, and its pre-theatre menu is compact and tasty. The restaurant was recently awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence, and the low-lit bar offers an enclave for cosy nightcaps. Fancy a night with the girls? The 'Girlie Getaway' offer includes sparkling afternoon tea, a full Irish breakfast, and an overnight stay for two. And if that’s not your style, weddings, murder mystery, and cocktail experiences are available. They’re dog-friendly too, so don’t forget your pups.

The Europa Hotel

The Europa Hotel

Maybe the city’s greatest survivor, The Europa Hotel. It is known as the most bombed hotel in Europe, having weathered 36 bomb attacks during the Troubles. It stands grand on Great Victoria Street in the heart of the city, with 272 hotel rooms including 92 executive rooms and suites. It has kept its grand exteriors and magnificent, New York -feeling lobby. The bistro, central bar, and the elegant piano bar lounge get lively in the evenings with events, comedy evenings by regional and international acts, and live music. Afternoon tea with a particular Belfast charm and local delicacies can be booked daily in the piano lounge. Its Grand Ballroom acts as a popular wedding venue, too. And if you’re feeling particularly presidential, the Clinton Suite is available – Bill and Hillary Clinton stayed here during peace talks in 1995. A saxophone in honour of the former president and Northern Ireland peace advocate hangs on the wall. An extensive renovation recently upgraded all of its guest bedrooms and gave interiors a refresh, so anyone can have a superior stay. Plus, seasonal offers start at a reasonable £55 a night.

AC Marriott

AC Marriott

Belfast’s riverside AC Marriott is an urban retreat with a sweeping glass front facade and scenic views of the Lagan river and Belfast Hills, in a prime position for access to both Belfast airports and the city centre offerings. With 188 rooms, this is one of the city’s largest hotels. It’s owned by Belfast Harbour, and the 25-million-pound development is the first built-to-specification AC Hotel in the UK. Jean Christophe Novelli, who has overseen multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, runs the riverside restaurant, cooking Mediterranean food made with local produce. The County Tyrone dry-aged tomahawk steak to share from the Novelli Grill, and the Ballylisk cheese board are particular highlights. The terrace is a pretty place to eat al-fresco (should the Belfast weather allow) at sunset. But if you’re to venture out, Ox, Muddlers Club, and Mourne Seafood Bar are all strong independently-run, local cuisine-focused restaurants close by.

Search by review score, search by price, search by freebies, the 10 best hotels in belfast.

Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is a city that truly encompasses a diverse blend of experiences. It offers a lot to any visitor, making it a sum of many fascinating parts. Exploring the city is a delight, and the accommodation options cater to all budgets, ensuring an equally exciting stay. Whether you seek luxurious lodgings, Bohemian bolt holes, or anything in between, Belfast boasts an impressive range of hotels. Here, I present to you my carefully selected list of the best hotels in Belfast.

The Merchant Hotel

16 Skipper Street

$350-844/night

For a luxury hotel in Belfast, look no further than The Merchant Hotel – a five-star icon that once housed the headquarters of Ulster Bank. Renowned for its imposing Italianate, sandstone façade, it’s a place to both see and be seen and understood to be one of the best hotels in Belfast. The 62 guestrooms are diverse in style from Art Deco to Victorian, while the selection of bar and restaurant facilities impresses. At the heart of the property, The Great Room is a formal restaurant in a stunning space with domed ceilings and an enviable chandelier. Alternatively, Bert’s Jazz Bar and Restaurant on the ground floor, offers bistro-style dining and jazz music seven nights a week. The Cocktail Bar is another architectural beauty, serving vintage Champagne and cocktails. The destination spa and rooftop gym, with a sauna and hot tub overlooking the city, is the icing on the cake.

Crowne Plaza Belfast

117 Milltown Road

$127-403/night

Located in Minnowburn, a short drive from Belfast city, the four-star Crowne Plaza Belfast is a recently refurbished 120-room property in the heart of the Lagan Valley Regional Park. The hotel is surrounded by an abundance of rivers, forests, and cycle paths and is perfect for spending time ambling around the local area. The proximity to the city center means that you are within reach of everything Belfast offers, but I usually just succumb to relaxing and unwinding at the hotel’s impressive range of amenities. The spa and health club include an indoor swimming pool and fitness center with a range of treatments available. Dining needs are catered for in The Green Room restaurant, while The River Bar Lounge & Bistro provides for all of your cocktail needs. Guest rooms are modern and bright with air conditioning, flat screen TVs, snuggly bathrobes, and most importantly – 24-hour room service.

Bullitt Hotel

40a Church Lane

$53-295/night

Laid-back is the vibe you can expect at ultra-hip Bullitt Hotel. Just a short walk from the Cathedral Quarter, Bullitt is named after the movie of the same name starring Steve McQueen. With 74 rooms from dinky (aka small) to biggy (aka less small), rooms have everything you need and nothing you don’t – think king-size beds, rain showers, and flat-screen TVs. There is even a “dog den” option if you enjoy bringing your pooch along. Meanwhile, social butterflies won’t be left behind with the bar and dining options within the hotel. Taylor and Clay is a lively grill room, Tetto is a rooftop restaurant and bar, while the Lobby and Courtyard Lounge is great for light bites. I loved Rattlebag Cocktail Bar; perfect for an intimate nightcap. Bullitt hosts many eclectic music events, such as jazz and blues, lobby vinyl sessions, and weekend DJs. Always great fun, whatever your musical leanings.

Ten Square Hotel

10 Donegal Square South

$53-1244/night

A centrally located four-star property, Ten Square is housed in a stunning Victorian building that dates from 1862. Once a linen warehouse, today it has transformed into a 131-room hotel right in the city. There are three room types: standard, deluxe, and executive, many with spectacular views over the city. Rooms are classically styled with all mod cons. Groups will love the wow factor of the Vegas suite, which can sleep up to ten people – perfect for a girls (or boys) night, it also boasts an outdoor hot tub and acres of space for lounging. Similarly, the Jaffe penthouse boasts a stunning roof terrace with views for miles. Food-wise, Josper’s Steakhouse is ideal for meat lovers, while The Loft bar has a decidedly “private club” feel with an impressive cocktail menu. On the ground floor, The Doffer Bar is a sport lover’s dream, showing every type of sporting fixture imaginable.

Holiday Inn Belfast City Centre

40 Hope Street

$110-447/night

There was a lot I loved about the 250-room Holiday Inn Belfast City Centre. Its proximity to the city and the Great Victoria Street train station is one, the vast array of on-site amenities is another. Remote workers (or just those who need to get online) will appreciate the dedicated workspaces and business services. Gym goers will be happy with the small but perfectly organized in-house gym. There is also an impressive range of accessible features throughout the hotel, including accessible guest rooms with emergency pull cords and grab bars, plus a selection of hearing and vision accessibility features and services. Breakfast is served buffet-style, and kids get to stay and eat for free, making it ideal for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. The room service, 24-hour reception desk, and car rental desk are all subtle touches that make a big impact in this day and age.

The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast

1-3 Great Victoria Street

$168-1862/night

The five-star Fitzwilliam Hotel is a tasteful and refined property, close to the Grand Opera House and Ulster Hall. With 146 guest rooms, The Fitzwilliam is considered to be the one of the best hotels in Belfast, and I couldn’t agree more. Perfect for an indulgent weekend getaway, I loved the range of experiences offered to guests. These include cocktail masterclasses, murder mystery dinners, and “crafternoon” tea – an unusual take on the classic with craft beer – traditionalists will be glad to observe that the classic afternoon tea is also an option. Other services that elevate The Fitzwilliam are the dog-friendly policy, the accessibility access, the plush guestrooms, and the on-site parking. The turndown service is a nice touch, and the suites have stunning glazed walls with expansive views over the city. The baby grand piano in the 1,300 sq. ft. penthouse suite is the stuff of dreams.

Europa Hotel

Great Victoria Street

$23-726/night

One of the best hotels in Belfast, The Europa exudes understated elegance and has a fascinating history. The location is ideal, just a short walk from the city, and the public spaces are both spacious and intimate. The 272-guest room property recently underwent phase one of a refurbishment project, which upgraded some of the guest rooms to include air conditioning, automated window blinds, new bathrooms, and updated interiors. Beds from King Koil are ridiculously comfy, while The Titanic Suite is fit for a queen. The food in The Causerie Restaurant is delicious, and a nightcap in the Piano Bar to the backdrop of the resident pianist make for a memorable evening. Other amenities might be somewhat limited, but it’s hard to care when you are staying so close to the city in such an iconic property. Plus, there is jazz in the Lobby Bar on Saturday afternoons. Need I say more?

Hilton Belfast

4 Lanyon Place

$137-1091/night

Hilton Belfast has a lot to live up to, and it doesn’t disappoint. On the banks of the River Lagan, a 10-minute walk from the city center, Hilton Belfast has a range of rooms to suit every guest. There are connecting rooms for families, and Executive Level rooms on the top floor include access to the Executive Lounge. All rooms have Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs, on-demand movies, and a mini bar. Other conveniences include a 24-hour reception desk, room service, and babysitting. Pet friendly rooms are available too, and there is also an on-site fitness center, as well as a business center. The Riverside Restaurant and Bar offers a brasserie-style menu, and we enjoyed the stunning views over the River Lagan thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The staff at No.4 Cocktail Bar mix a mean Manhattan, making Hilton Belfast one of the best hotels in Belfast – in my mind anyway.

36 Cromwell Road, Botanic Avenue

$106-280/night

A four-star boutique property, Tara Lodge is an underrated option and we think one of the best boutique hotels in Belfast. Just a 15-minute walk from the city center, Tara Lodge is ideally located in the Queens District, home to Queens University and The Botanic Gardens. Around the corner, Botanic Avenue is a hub of activity with lots of highly regarded restaurants, wine bars, and cafés to choose from. The 34 rooms at Tara Lodge are comfortable and well-equipped with LCD TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, crisp linens and high-speed Wi-Fi. Extra touches such as Grohe showers and toiletries from designer Orla Kiely are subtle but impactful. Signature rooms boast GHD hair straighteners, Nespresso machines, and bluetooth speakers. There is no evening dining option, but breakfast is a serious affair with a comprehensive à la carte menu. The free on-site parking is another subtle perk.

Stormont Hotel

587 Upper Newtownards Road

$35-391/night

The four-star Stormont Hotel is adjacent to the famous Stormont Estate, with its expansive parklands just a three-minute drive from the city. A revamp in 2017 resulted in an upgrade of some of the public spaces, with 20 of the 105 guestrooms being refreshed. We enjoyed the food and the cozy new wood-burning stoves in the lounge on a crisp day. On Sundays, lunch in The Grand Ballroom showcases the best of seasonal, Northern Ireland produce. For a more formal affair, La Scala Bistro serves dinner on a daily basis. Free parking is a bonus, as is the 24-hour front desk and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout. Guest rooms at The Stormont Hotel are comfortable and spacious, and each has a workstation, a seating area, and smart TVs. Bathrooms feature powerful showers, and there is a selection of suites and family rooms, too.

5 star hotels in Belfast

The second section of our guide is packed with the fancier Belfast hotels on offer, with a mix of boutique and 4 star spots (see our guide to the best 5 star hotels in Belfast for more).

Below, you’ll find everywhere from well-know spots, like the Fitzwilliam Hotel, to some lesser-known gems that pack a punch.

1. The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast

luxury hotels belfast

Tastefully decorated and stylishly appointed, the Fitzwilliam is arguably the best known of the luxury Belfast hotels, and for good reason.

It offers comfortable designer rooms with modern artworks, sofa seating and Egyptian bed linen. If you judge a hotel by the extras, it has fluffy robes and designer toiletries too. Rooms are air-conditioned and include a mini bar, flatscreen TV and WiFi.

The contemporary bar serves cocktails and champagne in crystal glasses and has over 700 spirits. There’s a creative menu and fine wine list in the restaurant. Next to the train station, the Fitzwilliam is a short walk (0.6 miles) from  city centre shops and the Cathedral Quarter .

2. The Culloden Estate and Spa

The hotel boasts a choice of bars including Bert’s Jazz bar with live music nightly. It’s also one of a handful of hotels in Belfast with a spa, sauna and rooftop hydrotherapy room.

The 10 Best Hotels in Belfast

visit belfast hotels

As Belfast leaves its troubles behind, the capital of Northern Ireland is quickly becoming a major destination. With a vibrant cultural scene, new culinary wonders, and a refurbished shipyard that includes Ireland’s most talked-about new museum, there are plenty of reasons to plan a trip to Belfast as soon as possible.

The golden Victorian age has still left its mark on the city, and some of the most historic buildings are now chic hotels in the heart of downtown. Towering skyscrapers have also been converted in luxury rooms, but beloved B&Bs still abound. Here is where to stay next time you visit Belfast.

The Fitzwilliam

Courtesy of The Fitzwilliam

The towering glass building that houses the Fitzwilliam Hotel in central Belfast offers unbeatable views of city hall and the lovely St. Anne’s Cathedral. Guests rave about the 5-star service, but the stylish digs speak for themselves. The award-winning hotel restaurant serves gorgeous meals from morning to night, including a delicious pre-theater tasting menu in the elegant dining room. After a nightcap in the glamorous hotel bar, slip under the duck down duvets and enjoy views of the city skyline from the contemporary rooms.

Grand Central Hotel Belfast

Courtesy of Grand Central Hotel Belfast

A short walk from the Grand Opera House, the Grand Central Hotel Belfast is one of Belfast’s most sought-after new hotels. The original Grand Central Hotel opened in the 1880s and hosted many celebrities over the years, including the Rolling Stones when they passed through Northern Ireland in the 1960s. The new Grand Central Hotel is a completely converted and updated 23-story glass building. The top floor is home to Ireland’s highest bar—the swanky Observatory Bar. The hotel also offers on-site dining in the Seahorse Bar and Restaurant, though you can also order food to be delivered directly to your lavish room.

Courtesy of Bullitt

This four-star boutique hotel is one of Belfast’s most stylish places to stay. The industrial-style accommodation is sleek without sacrificing any kind of comfort. The modern rooms are decorated in cool blues and grays, and all have kettles for making tea and coffee. Every morning, a simple breakfast is delivered to the rooms, though there is also a bistro restaurant in the hotel if you are searching for heartier fare. The small rooftop bar is a highlight, but you can also explore all the pubs and restaurants in the central neighborhood right between St. Anne’s Cathedral and St. George’s Market.

The Merchant

Courtesy of The Merchant

The Merchant began life as a bank but the lovely Victorian building has since been converted into one of Belfast’s best hotels. Filled with art-deco touches, the high-end hotel can be found a short walk from St. Anne’s Cathedral, right in the center of the city. While everything that the city has to offer lies right outside the door, you might not ever want to leave the luxe hotel. The Merchant has a fine dining restaurant known as The Great Room where guests can dine under a massive period chandelier. After dark, Berts Jazz bar turns up the volume with live music seven days a week. A cocktail bar and an Irish pub round out the dining and drinking options. Of course, the next morning you’re welcome to spend time in the rooftop gym that looks out over downtown.

The Titanic Hotel Belfast

Courtesy of The Titanic Hotel Belfast

The Titanic museum is one of the top things to experience in Belfast , and the new Titanic Hotel is a thematic accommodation option on the same shipyard as the famous attraction. Housed inside an old shipbuilding office that dates back to the late 19th century, the hotel is brimming with historic touches and maritime design. The nautical decor follows you into the upscale dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Flint Belfast

Courtesy of The Flint

The cool, minimalist design of the Flint makes it one of the top places to stay in Belfast. The hotel, located in the Linen Quarter, offers studio-style suites with seating areas and a kitchen so that all the comforts of home are available while you explore the city. The smart TVs are even programmed with Netflix so you can stream your favorite films from bed. If you don’t plan to stay long, the standard rooms come with all the same perks, minus the cooking area. While there is no bar or restaurant on-site, The Flint is literally in between two of Belfast’s best eateries, and many more are a short walk away.

Courtesy of Tara Lodge

For those who want to experience Queen’s Quarter and stay a few nights at a fair rate, Tara Lodge is an excellent home base in Belfast. Located right next to Botanic Train Station, most of downtown is a short walk away, but you can also hop on the train to easily reach the Titanic Belfast . The contemporary B&B-style hotel is located inside a red brick townhouse and a hot breakfast is available in the dining room every morning. There are no other bars or restaurants on-site, but there is plenty to do and eat in the increasingly trendy neighborhood surrounding Tara Lodge.

Hilton Belfast

Courtesy of Hilton Belfast

For water views, it is hard to beat the Hilton Belfast, which sits right on the banks of the River Lagan. The family-friendly hotel also attracts business travelers because it is attached to the Waterfront Hall convention center and a 2-minute walk from the edge of downtown. With two restaurants and an on-site gym, there is plenty to do at the property if you want to explore beyond the spacious rooms.

One Sussex Place

Courtesy of One Sussex Place

While Belfast has incredible traditional hotels and gorgeous modern boutique accommodations, some trips call for apartment-style stays. For a perfectly appointed flat, check into One Sussex Place, less than 5 minutes from St. George’s Market in the city center. The apartments range from one to two bedrooms and feature full kitchens and comfortable seating areas. While there are no bars or eateries on-site, you will have all the appliances you need to whip up a meal for a cozy night in, and it's only a short walk to many restaurants and nightspots.

Harper's Boutique

Courtesy of Harper's Boutique

For a unique stay in Queen’s Quarter, check into Harper's Boutique on University Street. The quiet area is only a 10-minute walk from downtown but offers a taste of local living in the city. The cozy bed and breakfast is set inside a grand, impeccably decorated, brick Victorian townhouse. Several rooms sizes are available to suit all travel styles and budgets, and all include breakfast every morning. There is also a small coffee shop inside, though those looking for hearty meals later in the day will have to eat off-site.

Belfast Hotels Information

No surprise, winter in Belfast is chilly, but thanks to warm blasts from the Gulf Stream, average temperatures stay above freezing. You’ll need to dig out your umbrella though, since winter days bring buckets of rain.

Belfast’s thriving pub culture is great year around. But the warming fireplaces, comfort food, and live music of traditional pubs become the perfect gathering place come winter.

For the ultimate in holiday shopping, head to Belfast for its annual Christmas market on the grounds of City Hall. Spend hours browsing gifts and crafts while sipping a warming drink under the glow of festive lights.

St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 sends winter out in glorious style. Celebrate the now-global holiday in this saint’s homeland with festivities and educational events.

After an often-soggy winter, spring comes as a relief, with temperatures ticking upward and daylight slowly stretching out. The lovely combo of later sunsets and seasonal blooms brings locals and tourists flooding back into the streets.

Spring events add fresh energy to Belfast, filling up the cultural calendar with annual highlights like the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival, the Balmoral Show, and film fests.

Savor blossoming trees and blooming flowers in the many gardens and parks of Belfast. Botanic Gardens and Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park are just a few of the must-visit spots for soaking up springtime.

Spring is the perfect moment to enjoy Belfast’s iconic waterfront. Make the most of a sunny spring day by walking or cycling along the 10 kilometers of paths (and one mile of waterfront) of the Maritime Mile.

Warm-but-not-sweltering weather and longer days make summertime the most popular season to explore Northern Ireland’s biggest city. Get in on the festive spirit that breezes through Belfast, inspiring everyone to throw open their doors and join in the urban bustle.

The good news: There’s no need to worry about reduced or seasonal hours during Belfast’s busiest season. The bad news: You’ll want to book ahead at top sights, so you can skip the ever-growing queue.

Summer is the perfect time to hit the links at the lush golf courses in and around Belfast. Northern Ireland is home to more than 90 golf clubs, many of which are just a short jaunt from the city.

Lace up those hiking boots! With less rain in summer, it’s the best time to trek around stellar natural sights like Divis and the Black Mountain. The exhilarating walk to the peak offers both a good workout and great views of the city.

Mother Nature dials up the rain in autumn, but locals don’t let it stop them from getting on with things as they expertly dodge puddles around the city. Plus shorter days means longer nights, and more reasons to bask in Belfast’s nightlife scene, one that includes everything from a pint at the pub to dancing all night.

Welcome to Belfast’s festival season! Buzzy, big-name annual events include the Belfast International Arts Festival, film festivals, the city’s Queer Arts Festival, plus a yearly celebration honoring native son C.S. Lewis.

In autumn, students pour back into this university town, bringing a boisterous vibe to the pubs, bars, and clubs. The student population also turns up the volume on Belfast’s thriving live music scene.

Grab a jacket and get outside. Belfast and the surrounding areas are full of beautiful nature walks, and a gorgeous canopy of reds and golds blankets wooded areas this time of year.

16 of the best hotels in Belfast

Belfast is a city that’s filled with great places to stay from lavish estates to historical hideaways. here’s our pick of the bunch.

visit belfast hotels

F or a city so small, there sure is a lot of life in Belfast . This is a city where there’s always something going on, whether it’s an impromptu session in a rickety old pub or a brand new restaurant with a line snaking down the street. You’ll always find a buzz in the centre of town but there are also charming little enclaves just a short stroll away, where you can escape for a bit of peace and quiet among Victorian townhouses and pretty parks. Whether you want to be in the heart of it all in the lively Cathedral Quarter, or embrace the tranquillity down by the Botanic Gardens, Belfast has a place to stay that will fit the bill.

Main photo: the Titanic Hotel

The Titanic Hotel

1. Titanic Hotel, Titanic Quarter

Best for luxury You might expect a place called the Titanic Hotel to be a little contrived, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, this hotel (set in the heart of the Titanic Quarter, in the very building where the ship was designed) is filled with tasteful nods to the heritage of the Harland & Wolff Headquarters, with original drawings on display and nautical design touches in the rooms. The bar and restaurant are particularly stylish too, with vintage White Star Line travel posters on the walls, which are lined with the same tiles that were used in the ship’s first-class bathrooms. Unsurprisingly, the excellent Titanic Belfast museum is right next door.

The Great Room Restaurant at The Merchant

2. Merchant Hotel, Cathedral Quarter

Best for couples Super swish and oh-so-stylish, the Merchant Hotel has been part of the fabric of Belfast for years. Set in the former headquarters of Ulster Bank, this listed building is fairly imposing, but the interiors are just as impressive, particularly the art deco-inspired cocktail bar, where people gather for gimlets and martinis by the open fire. The lavishness continues in the rooms, where you’ll find antique mirrors and deep bathtubs. Oh, and there’s a rather jazzy hot tub on the roof, too.

The bar at the Malmaison

3. Malmaison, Cathedral Quarter

Best for romantic getaways One of the best boutique hotels in the city, the Malmaison is in a great spot if you want to explore the Cathedral Quarter. Things are pretty striking from the outside (the exterior even comes complete with gargoyles) but inside, the vibe is sultry, dark and sleek. There’s a vibrant, artsy feel to the rooms, with more heritage features in the suites, like exposed beams and fireplaces. You’ll generally find a bit of buzz in the bar, which also has one of the best happy hours in town.

4. Bullitt Hotel, Cathedral Quarter

Best for nightlife Keeping in the spirit of micro hotels with oodles of style but not so much space, Bullitt is perfect if you want a great room but know you’ll only be in it when you’re sleeping. There’s unique artwork on the walls and clever storage spaces, but the real joy comes in the massive lobby and courtyard, where you’ll find plenty of people sitting with a cocktail as the resident DJ plays. There’s also a steakhouse restaurant, Taylor & Clay, which serves up a killer roast dinner on Sundays. Spa N Pool N Price £

The café at The Grand Central Hotel (Jack Hardy)

5. Grand Central Hotel, Linen Quarter

Best for city views Set right in the heart of Belfast city centre, the Grand Central Hotel is a gleaming tower of modern rooms, where light floods in from the floor-to-ceiling windows and the best of the city is right on your doorstep. For the finest views, head to The Observatory, Ireland’s tallest cocktail bar, where you can sip on an Old Fashioned as you gaze out at City Hall, the dome of Victoria Square and even the Mourne Mountains in the distance.

6. Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast, City Centre

Best for boutique style One of the few five star hotels in the city, the Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast is right next to the Grand Opera House, and has great views over the spires of the Assembly Buildings. Book one of the rooms on a higher floor if you want to make the most of the cityscape. Inside, you’ll find the perfect blend of jewel tones and subtle patterns, with great places for mingling in the lobby, like the sofas by the giant fireplace or the cosy cocktail bar.

Spa N Pool N Price £££

The Clayton Hotel

7. Clayton Hotel Belfast, Linen Quarter

Best for families A good all-round budget option, the Clayton is handy for any city gallivanting that you wish to do. The Crown Liquor Saloon is just around the corner, and Ulster Hall is even closer. It’s also one of the few city centre hotels that has a swimming pool, making it ideal for family breaks — they also have plenty of family and interconnecting rooms, too. Down in the gym, there’s top-notch equipment and a regular timetable of fitness classes, if you want to keep in shape while you’re away.

Spa Y Pool Y Price ££

8. The Harrison, Queen’s Quarter

Best for design One of the newest hotels in Belfast, The Harrison is also one of the coolest, with just 16 rooms, each individually designed and filled with fun touches like record players and freestanding bathtubs. There are plenty of further eccentric features in this beautiful Victorian building that dates back to 1879. It’s set down in the Queen’s Quarter, where things are a little quieter than the city centre, which is just a 15-minute stroll away. But with so many great cafés and pubs on the doorstep, you don’t need to venture too far.

The Piano Bar at The Europa (Jack Hardy)

9. Europa Hotel, Linen Quarter

Best for history buffs It can’t quite shake the unfortunate stigma of being the most bombed hotel in the world during the Troubles, but the Europa is entrenched in the history of Belfast. And now, following a lavish refurbishment and a 50th anniversary, it’s an attraction for all the right reasons. There’s a permanent exhibition down in the lobby marking the history of the hotel, with snippets from previous guests such as the Dalai Lama and Bill Clinton. The best place to soak up the history is in the Piano Bar, over afternoon tea.

Spa N Pool N Price £

10. Ten Square Hotel, Linen Quarter

Best for groups Set right on Donegall Square, Ten Square has 131 rooms, split between the 19th-century linen warehouse and a newly built wing. But the real selling point comes for groups — the Vegas Suite sleeps up to ten and has its own outdoor Jacuzzi, whereas the Jaffe Penthouse has a rooftop terrace with incredible views over the turquoise domes of City Hall. There’s always a bit of buzz around the bar, and the steakhouse is a carnivore’s dream, with salt-aged steaks cooked over the charcoal grill.

11. Culloden Estate and Spa, Holywood

Best for spa Set just on the edge of the city overlooking Belfast Lough, the Culloden Estate is the perfect gateway to Northern Ireland. Handily, it’s also one of the finest luxury hotels in the country, with a regal exterior (it was built to be the official palace for the Bishops of Down) and a sumptuous country house feel inside. The real clincher is the spa, with a vitality pool overlooking the gardens and two different steam rooms. There’s also a traditional pub on the grounds, if you don’t fancy venturing into the city.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £££

12. Radisson Blu, Gasworks

Best for business trips This corner of the city is fairly business-centric, but also a bit up and coming — and while you’re far enough from the action to get a bit of peace and quiet, the city centre is just a short walk away. Some of the rooms have views of the River Langan, others look out over the city, and there’s an excellent selection of Irish gins behind the bar.

Rayanne House

13. Rayanne House, Holywood

Best for period features It’s true that Belfast leans into its Titanic heritage, but at Rayanne House there’s an impressive angle at play. Once a month, the chef recreates the final meal served in first class on the ill-fated ocean liner, with a nine-course Titanic Menu that’s just as tempting over a century later; think filet mignon topped with foie gras and truffle, and spiced peaches in Chartreuse jelly. This period house is the perfect setting for it too, with original Victorian features and glossy antique furniture.

Jurys Inn

14. Jurys Inn, Linen Quarter

Best for a city centre location It’s all about location here, with a handy setting smack bang in the middle of the city. Some of the city’s best bars are right on the doorstep, and places such as the excellent St George’s Market are just a short stroll away. There are 270 comfortable rooms, some of which sleep four, making it perfect for families or friends. There’s a good number of accessible rooms, too.

The Flint Hotel

15. The Flint Hotel, Linen Quarter

Best for longer stays Set just around the corner from City Hall, on the restaurant heavy Howard Street, The Flint may be light on traditional hotel amenities, but they make up for it with rooms that are cool and design led, with dark navy walls, original floors and stark industrial shelves. Each of the 55 suites has a plush king bed and sitting area, as well as a kitchenette with microwave, toaster and an oven. Add in a proper table and chairs, and you have a perfect setting for business trips or longer stays.

House Belfast

16. House Belfast, Queen’s Quarter

Best for late nights House Belfast is a rambling collection of bars and dining spaces, with an Instagram-friendly aesthetic that attracts all the cool kids — think moody whiskey rooms, wood panelled walls and a giant cherry blossom tree in the middle of the bar. But upstairs, the 31 bedrooms have more of a heritage style, with floral wallpapers, heavy curtains and vintage style prints. The bar is open until 1am, so it’s probably not the best option for early birds, but it’s a good shout if you’re planning on burning the midnight oil.

About Belfast

Belfast has well and truly patched up its bullet holes and shrugged off its industrial funk, and now has plenty of the other kind of funk. Yes, Belfast is as lively as ever, but it’s now a lot of fun too. The development of the Titanic museum has spread to a whole area of the docks, and the Titanic Quarter is now a stunning hub of visitor appeal that’s spread contagiously throughout the city. Titanic Quarter even has its own hotel, the Titanic Hotel Belfast , which is on our Gurus’ list of the best places to stay in Belfast. Converted from the offices of the shipping company, Harland & Wolff, this is an easy choice, but our Gurus’ list also includes a converted bank, a converted warehouse, apartment-hotels, B&Bs, and even a country estate which is surprisingly close to the centre of town.

As well as the Titanic Museum, this quarter now has several floating museums, and they’ve retained the two huge shipping cranes, Samson and Goliath, which are an incredible sight. Beyond Titanic are the relics of ‘The Troubles’: the white, pillared, neoclassical facade of Stormont, the Ulster Museum and Crumlin Road Gaol, which offer a fascinating reminder of this city's violent past. Today you’ll find more of a gentle melding of Irish and British culture, which makes for a unique city, totally unlike London or Dublin. Belfast's many years as a no-go zone means its relatively unspoilt and undiscovered — and one of the best ways to see it, is on a Black Taxi Tour, where an experienced driver, usually one who worked through 'The Troubles', will show you their city, complete with personal details.

If you’re here to have fun, to eat, drink and be merry on local craic, you’ll definitely find some of the best places to stay in Belfast around the centre of town, but you might also want to keep an eye out for accommodation in the Cathedral Quarter. Belfast is now awash with great places to eat and drink, and the real problem will be finding enough mealtimes to sample all you want to.

The Best Places to Stay in Belfast

For a special occasion.

  • Right beside the stunning Titanic museum, converted from the offices of the ship’s designers, Harland & Wolff, the Titanic Hotel Belfast is both historic and hip. You’d expect a bit of maritime opulence in a hotel of this name, and you’ll find it here, but in a simple form, against a sleek, white backdrop that makes the most of this gorgeous building. There are 119 guest rooms, plus an award-winning bar with a fantastic cocktail list, and an award-winning fine dining restaurant. A chic Belfast choice.
  • The Culloden Estate and Spa is a luxurious hotel and spa overlooking Belfast Lough and the city. This is perfect if you’re looking for a country house hotel feel, as there are green views and extensive gardens. The historic building offers some grand suites, but there are plenty of simpler and more affordable options too. Five star service and great food, plus a beautiful indoor pool and expansive sauna. Great for families too.
  • Originally the headquarters of the Ulster Bank, the Merchant Hotel building has kept its grand facade and high ceilings during its conversion into a luxurious, 62 room hotel, but a lot more velvet and ornate wallpaper has been added, as well as a rooftop spa. The superb bar serves what they claim, is the world’s most expensive cocktail!

For a City Break

  • Malmaison Belfast has been converted from a warehouse — in typical Malmaison style — and is now a fine representation of the brand’s stylish, slightly masculine aesthetic. There are 64 rooms and suites, the largest of which have their own entertaining areas — with a pool table if you want one. But there are plenty rooms of a much more reasonable size and price. All have bold, statement wallpaper, large windows and contemporary bathrooms. As with all the Malmaisons, the bar is a hip place to hang out for locals and guests, and there’s an extensive menu in the restaurant. Surprisingly good for families too, because of the range of rooms.
  • The Bullitt is a hip choice, just across the road from Malmaison Belfast, in a great spot for exploring, shopping, visiting the museums and going out of an evening. Inside the mirrored glass facade are 43 rooms and suites, cleverly designed and decorated, with a mid-century/industrial edge, and cool photographs adorning the dark charcoal walls. King sized beds and satellite TV come as standard. The bar and restaurant are equally cool, and they offer a breakfast-to-go daily.
  • Central and smart, the Europa Hotel is a large hotel with excellent facilities including a full business centre and a piano bar. There are 272 rooms and suites in a wide range of sizes, all decorated in classic hotel style, with fine linens and large lampshades. The bar and restaurant serve an exemplary afternoon tea, as well as a full bistro menu.

For a Central Spot

  • Ten Square has been developed from a Grade 1 listed building in the centre of Belfast, close to Belfast City Hall, Ulster Hall and the Grand Opera House. Considering it’s listed, the interiors are surprisingly contemporary, and light and spacious with it. The restaurant is a popular steakhouse, but there are plenty of other places to eat and drink nearby.
  • The Flint is a cleverly designed collection of 55 suites and apartments just around the corner from Ten Square. As well as fitting everything guests need into a stylish compact space, these suites are cool too, with parquet flooring, dark blue walls, and small contemporary kitchens. This could be a good pick for families, and while there’s no restaurant, there are reams of places to eat and drink just a short stroll away.
  • Benedicts Hotel is a boutique-style property just outside central Belfast, close to Botanic Station. We like the unique bar and restaurant on the ground floor, which is a bit like a cosy, Gothic cavern, and has been decorated with interiors salvaged from local churches. It’s a great late night spot. Upstairs are 32 rooms and suites, decorated with stylish colour schemes. Great value too.

For Romantics

  • The Fitzwilliam Hotel is a stylish city break hotel in a central spot, close to the Grand Opera House, with just enough distance to offer city views from floor to ceiling windows as well. The top floor suites are fantastic, with lots of space, as well as the views, but all the rooms are chicly decorated, with an Art Deco style print against a pastel colour scheme that unites the whole building. The lounge bar is stylishly sexy, and the minimalist restaurant is perfect for two.

For Great Value

  • House Belfast is a chic choice in a central Belfast spot in the Holylands. its 31 rooms and suites are decorated with plenty of smart fixtures and fittings, including walls of fancy wallpaper, quirky artwork, and velvet cushions. Downstairs in the bar and restaurant there’s a gently industrial edge, complemented with cosy wood panelling and furniture upholstered in plush velvet. There’s also a great cocktail menu and a friendly restaurant, with many more places to eat and drink nearby.
  • Tara Lodge is a collection of 34 stylish, yet affordable, rooms and suites in a fantastic spot for exploring Belfast. Facilities include parking, complimentary breakfasts, and in-room tea and coffee making facilities, but no restaurant (there's plenty of eateries close by).

Best B&Bs

  • Maryville House is a Victorian mansion turned B&B, just outside the centre of Belfast, in leafy Musgrave Park. There are six guest rooms, all individually decorated, in keeping with their location in the house — for example, the attic rooms are large, but with low ceilings. There’s a light, airy dining room, which has been turned into a very good tea room, and all the communal areas are stylish and welcoming. Owner managed.

Travel Information

  • Want to fly to Belfast?
  • Belfast has two airports of its own: Belfast International Airport , and George Best Belfast City Airport . The international airport is about 20 minutes outside of the centre town by taxi, or just under an hour by public transport, and Belfast City Airport is about six minutes from the centre of town by taxi, or eight minutes on the train.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars .
  • Belfast is a proper city break destination, and we see it as a year round pick. Summer is still the most popular time for visitors, though most locals will tell you that the nicest time of year, weather-wise, is April through June: you get the longer days and the spring flowers. St. Patrick’s Day is a stand out date for visiting Belfast too — the parades and cultural events are always incredible — and the Belfast Film Festival is held around Easter. Belfast also hosts a popular International Arts Festival in October.
