Ultimate One Day Tampa Itinerary (A Local’s Guide)

' src=

Planning a day trip to Tampa and want to make the most of it? I understand the challenge of trying to fit the best of Tampa into just 24 hours. That’s why I’ve crafted an ultimate one day Tampa itinerary that’ll help you experience the city’s top spots without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads.

One Day Tampa Itinerary

When planning a one-day trip to Tampa, efficiency and proximity are key to experiencing the essence of the city. I’ve found that centering your day around the Downtown and Riverwalk is an optimal choice. This picturesque promenade offers not just scenic strolls but also access to diverse attractions . Starting early is recommended as there’s ground to cover and sights to soak in.

The Morning

La segunda bakery for cuban toast and cafe con leche.

visit tampa bay instagram

Starting your Tampa adventure requires energy, and there’s no better place to get that local infusion of wakefulness than La Segunda Bakery . This historic establishment is where the morning aroma is a blend of strong café con leche and freshly baked Cuban toast.

I always order the Cuban Toast (they give you a huge portion) and a Cafe Con Leche! They have locations in Ybor City and on Kennedy Blvd (I normally stop at the Kennedy Blvd location).

Visit the Florida Aquarium in Channelside

After the flavorful start at La Segunda, get ready for the next chapter in your day – the renowned Florida Aquarium in the Channelside, just 0.7 miles from the city center. A mere hop away from the bakery, it’s a magical world teeming with aquatic life.

Take advantage of the Wild Dolphin Cruise , a top traveler-recommended choice that showcases Tampa’s rich shoreline. Departing twice daily, this 75-minute excursion aboard a 72-foot catamaran is aimed at encountering the hundreds of bottlenose dolphins that thrive in the bay.

The feeling of the sea breeze on your face, coupled with the thrill of spotting not only dolphins but also a diverse array of bird species and the occasional sea turtle, is absolutely exhilarating. And with the Florida Aquarium’s combo ticket, which includes access to the rest of the aquarium’s exhibits, you’ll be set for an entire morning of discovery and awe.

Whether exploring under the sea or enjoying Tampa’s savory delights, these morning ventures are the perfect prelude to the rest of the day.

The Afternoon

Lunch at the oxford exchange.

As midday approaches, head to the Oxford Exchange, a Tampa favorites nestled near the University of Tampa’s historic campus. I love to order their famed chicken burger , which comes piled high with avocado, fiery jalapeño, ripe tomato, tangy feta, and a smoky cumin aioli, all sandwiched between a perfectly toasted bun.

After lunch, get lost in their attached shop that’s a haven for Instagram pics. Between the curated coffee table books, organic skincare line, and dazzling array of home decor items – the shopping experience is as nourishing for the soul as the lunch is for the body.

Shopping in Hyde Park Village

Just a short trip from Oxford Exchange, Hyde Park Village offers another great stop in Tampa’s afternoon story. This chic 6-block enclave is where local shopping, gourmet dining, and vibrant events harmoniously collide. Shopping in Hyde Park Village becomes an excursion in itself , offering the best in fashion, homeware, and lifestyle products.

I make a point of visiting on the first Sunday of the month when the fresh market takes center stage, showcasing a bounty of artisanal goods and local flair.

The Evening

Tiki boat tour along riverwalk.

After a day filled with sightseeing and capturing the essence of Tampa, the evening still offers more unique experiences. One that stands out is the Tiki Boat Tour along the Riverwalk . Imagine floating down the Hillsborough River, taking in the stunning views of Downtown Tampa without the need to go by foot.

The simplicity of this tour is part of its charm. The tour operators usually provide a free cooler and a Bluetooth stereo, which means kicking back with your tunes and drinks was a breeze. Throughout the 90 minutes on the water, the city presents itself from a new perspective, one that effortlessly melds the urban pulse with the flow of the river.

Dinner at Ulele (Tampa Riverwalk)

As dusk settles and hunger kicks in, it’s time to talk about dinner. On the Tampa Riverwalk , Ulele takes pride of place, offering a feast not just for the stomach but for the eyes too. The restaurant serves indigenous Florida-inspired dishes and the view from its waterfront location is simply hard to top. Their on-site brewery crafts unique flavors that are piped straight to the taps, promising a fresh beer experience.

They’re known to be busy, especially on weekends, so a reservation is a smart move. It’s the kind of evening that encapsulates the spirit of Tampa, mixing culture, history, and gastronomy into one delightful package. After dinner, head over to Armature works for a cocktail on the rooftop!

A Local’s Guide To The Best of Tampa/St. Petersburg

  • July 21, 2022

White sand beaches and warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico welcome visitors to the  Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater area on the west coast of Florida. But there’s so much more to the region. Freelance travel writer Marcea Cazel enjoys sharing unique things to do in Florida, especially in her adopted hometown. The creator of the travel blog My Cornacopia , Marcea lives with her family outside of Clearwater and is always on the lookout for places to explore. Be sure to follow her on Instagram and Facebook .

Here are some things Marcea loves best about the Tampa Bay area.

visit tampa bay instagram

Why did you move to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area? How long have you lived there?

I first moved to the area in 1996 after college. Clearwater is where I met my husband, and we got married. We moved away for 13 years but came back to the area eight years ago because we always knew we’d like to return to raise a family here. It made that big an impression on me all those years ago.

Three words to describe the Tampa/St. Petersburg area

Relaxing, sunny, artistic.

What’s something that might surprise people about the Tampa Bay area?

The first is that Tampa Bay isn’t a city. Tampa Bay is a large body of water here, but it also refers to the area that surrounds the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater.

The other thing that surprises people is that it’s no longer a sleepy area full of retirees. The demographics here are diverse, and people live very active lifestyles.

What are your favorite restaurants in the Tampa Bay area?

I love restaurants that show off the gorgeous water views we have. On Clearwater Beach, my go-to is Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill . It’s right on the beach, and if you sit on the patio, you can watch people play volleyball and enjoy the waves. In downtown St. Petersburg, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille offers great drinks and is right on the new pier. And if you’re in Tarpon Springs to visit the Sponge Docks, head to Rusty Bellies Waterfront Grill afterward. They have their own seafood boats, so you know the grouper, shrimp, and stone crab they have on the menu are always fresh.

Where would you go for a special occasion meal?

I’d head to Ulele . Overlooking the Hillsborough River, they serve unique Florida-inspired dishes like alligator hush puppies and a native chili that includes boar and duck. Their use of local ingredients makes for unique menu choices.

What’s your favorite place to get fresh air?

If I’m looking to get some fresh air, I always go to one of the nine Florida State Parks in the area. The state park system is so diverse that there’s a little something different at each one. My favorites to go for a hike and clear my mind are Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa and Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin.

Hillsborough River State Park is located on over 3,000 acres and has buildings constructed during the Depression, including a suspension bridge that will give you heart palpitations. The hiking trails take you right past the river that has some of the only river rapids in the state.

visit tampa bay instagram

Honeymoon Island State Park is home to beaches that are often ranked as some of the best in the United States. It also has wooded hiking areas where you can spot all kinds of animal and plant life. It’s such a relaxing feeling once you’re inside the park that it’s easy to forget you’re in the most densely populated county in the state.

visit tampa bay instagram

We often don’t get to stay in hotels in our hometown, but let’s pretend. Where would you stay in the Tampa Bay area?

The Fenway Hotel . Built in the mid-1920s, it hosted artists, musicians, and literary types and many local dances took place there. After being closed for many years, it was recently completely renovated. It’s a quick walk there from the restaurants and breweries of downtown Dunedin and has a rooftop bar that gives unobstructed views of the sunset.

What’s the art scene like? Anything you think is a must-see/do?

St. Petersburg has become an arts mecca and is a must-visit for any type of arts lover. The art museums in the city are excellent and include The Salvador Dali Museum , which has the largest collection of Dali works outside of Spain. There are also museums in the city that focus on fine arts, crafts, and western American art. One recent addition is Fairgrounds St. Pete, a n immersive museum; the artists work in a variety of mediums, including neon, giving it a true Florida vibe.

visit tampa bay instagram

I recommend that everyone who visits St. Pete explore the street murals throughout the city. There is no complete map of all of them since some are privately commissioned, but there are over 500 of them. And every October, the city puts on the SHINE Mural Festival , where you can watch artists work on their masterpieces from start to finish.

visit tampa bay instagram

There are so many reasons to stay up past your bedtime in the Tampa Bay area. If you had to just pick 2-3, what are they?

I don’t hang out late much anymore, but one thing I’ve wanted to experience is heading to the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club. It’s the oldest shuffleboard club in the world and hosts several nighttime events to get people interested in the sport. If you think shuffleboard is only for people past retirement age, think again. In addition to Friday nights where you can bring food and drinks and learn how to play, the club also hosts a shuffleboard history event that includes free local beer.

Another thing on my list is to do a glow tour with Get Up and Go Tampa Bay . They use clear kayaks that are lit up, and their guides take you out through the mangroves and to Shell Key Island at night. It sounds peaceful and scary all at the same time!

What’s the most chill/relaxing experience in town?

Heading to one of the local breweries in the area. The craft beer trend has really exploded in the Tampa Bay area in the past few years. It’s said that we have close to 100 breweries and that it’s the biggest brewing area in the state. While there are some larger, nationally owned breweries, most of them are locally owned and operated. Going to a brewery is a great way to get to know local residents and learn fun things to do.

visit tampa bay instagram

It’s hard to pick favorites, but the two I love are Keel Farms, 7venth Sun, and Brighter Days. Keel Farms is a winery/brewery/restaurant in Plant City and often puts on family-friendly events. Their wines and ciders are my favorites because they use natural Florida flavors like key lime and strawberries. The Dunedin location of 7venth Sun (they also have a Tampa location) is small but fun. They create some unique beers and have one of the few female head brewers in the area.

What do you think most tourists do wrong in the Tampa Bay area?

Missing out on exploring the history of the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. Our beaches are amazing, but it’s not all there is to do here. The history here is very interesting – even Theodore Roosevelt was in Tampa before shipping out with the Rough Riders.

The Tampa Bay History Center is a great place to start. It offers an overview of the original indigenous residents through current times. The center also has walking tours of Tampa. Two of them focus on African American history and give a perspective of pioneering Black residents that are often ignored.

visit tampa bay instagram

Also in Tampa is Ybor City, which has a very interesting history. The roosters that you’ll see wandering around are related to the roosters in Key West, who originally came from Cuba. And speaking of Cuba, José Mart í Park in Ybor is owned by the Cuban government. There’s a wealth of Cuban history in Ybor. A great place to learn more about this one-mile city within a city is at the Ybor City Museum .

Best place for a selfie?

The Tampa Riverwalk overlooking the minarets of the University of Tampa. And any beach on the Gulf of Mexico at sunset.

Best day trip?

Take the interstate south and head to The Ringling in Sarasota. The former home of one of the Ringling Brothers of circus fame, the site now has an art museum, a circus museum, tours of the main home, and acres of gardens to explore. You can easily spend all day there exploring and enjoying lunch at one of the restaurants on-site.

Most underrated experience in town?

The Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo. It’s over 150 acres that highlight a lot of local flora. There are ponds, fountains, sculptures, and benches, making for a relaxing experience that helps take your mind away for a few hours. And the best thing is that it’s part of the county parks system and is free to enter.

Extremely interesting and informative. Tampa Bay here I come!

Love the content and depth of the guide. Let us know how we can possibly get in here when you write again!

A dear friend moved to Clearwater Florida near her son. When I visit I must find these places Samantha recommends for eating and touring. the museums.

Frenchy’s is also one of my favorites! I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Hattrick’s in downtown Tampa. Seriously the best wings you will ever have (and I lived in Buffalo, NY!)

The time is right for Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov to get his ovation

  • John Romano Times staff

TAMPA — Connor McDavid beat him to glory. Fitting, wouldn’t you say?

For most of his hockey career, Nikita Kucherov has been one step beyond the spotlight. One smile shy of beloved. One Steven Stamkos away from owning this rabid, little hockey market.

So when it came time to matching an NHL standard that had not been seen in more than 30 years, of course the glamorous prodigy in Edmonton notched his 100th assist a scant 48 hours before Kucherov could get one last attempt in the regular-season finale against Toronto.

That’s just the way things seem to go for Kucherov and, for that, maybe we should be thankful.

You see, Kucherov is ours. All ours. We’ve never shared him with the talking heads on hockey’s biggest TV shows, even after he won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP in 2019. We’ve never seen him faking his way through commercials. We’ve never needed him to be more than what he has been to the Lightning and the community.

And that is one of the best dang playmakers the world has known.

We’ve always been aware of that, but the race to 100 assists just confirms it. Of the thousands of players who have reached the NHL in the past century, only Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have ever had a season of 100 assists. Well, those three and now McDavid.

“Just look at the names that have gotten 100 assists: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr. Those guys played how long ago? And he’s potentially on the brink of doing it now,” said Lightning forward Brandon Hagel. “There’s been so many NHL players, great players, that have come into the league and have never been able to do something like that.

“His vision is out of this world. He slows the game down so much. You know, every team puts their best players on the power play, and we’ve had the No. 1 power play in the league this year. And it’s all because of him.”

Categorizing Kucherov has always been a bit of a challenge. He’s not as fast as some, not as physical as others. He can shoot, he can skate, he can handle the puck, but his real talent is looking at a sheet of ice the way Van Gogh might have looked at a blank canvas. Kucherov sees things others can’t imagine.

His passes come from here, there and everywhere. Playing on a line with Kucherov means being ready to have the puck arrive from any angle at any moment. And that’s why the 100 assists would be the most appropriate milestone to punctuate a near-certain Hall of Fame career.

In a recent game against Columbus, the Lightning pushed the puck quickly up the ice. Kucherov looks to his left as he skates through the neutral zone and sees the pass go behind him to Anthony Duclair. He turns and goes full speed toward the net, and Duclair pushes the puck to him just as he reaches the faceoff circle. With a defender on his back, Kucherov plays the puck off his skate, puts it on his stick and then does a 360-degree turn as he passes behind him to Brayden Point for an open shot at the net.

There did not appear to be even one moment, after crossing the center line, that Kucherov looked in Point’s direction. And yet he delivered the puck in the exact spot for a one-timer while still skating at a high speed the other way.

“He’s two or three steps ahead of everybody,” said forward Anthony Cirelli. “He’s always thinking about the next play, or the play after that. You can see it on the ice; he just knows where guys are, he knows who the open guy is and he always finds a way to hit him. He knows where to find the open space, and you can see the results in the number of points and assists he has.”

He’s never been gregarious, or particularly warm. He seems unconcerned with his image and that indifference could cost him when it comes to what is expected to be a tight race for the Hart Trophy.

Buit here’s the bottom line on Kucherov’s 2023-24 season:

His 142 points lead the NHL and are the second-most by any player in the last 25 years. The 142 points are the third-most by any wing in NHL history, according to Hockey Reference, trailing only Jaromir Jagr and Mike Bossy.

“He’s one of the best players in the world,” general manager Julien BriseBois said earlier this season, “and every night I’m glad he’s wearing our jersey.”

Kucherov began this morning as a superstar. No different from any other Stanley Cup-engraving, MVP-winning, All-Star-grumbling icon.

And by tonight, he may well have moved on to take his seat next to a select group of legends.

Table for five, please.
