The Bronx does not often get as much of the New York City spotlight as neighboring boroughs like Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn. But the Bronx is one of the most authentic, diverse, and historically significant places in the entire country.

Located across the Harlem River northeast of Manhattan, the Bronx is the borough that gave us Hip Hop, and icons like George Carlin, Tony Curtis, Floyd Mayweather, Mary J. Blige, Lauren Bacall, and so many more.

Today the Bronx is home to some of the best things to see and do in New York City, from the world-famous Bronx Zoo to Yankee Stadium, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Museum of Arts. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, a trip to Yankee Stadium , home of the 27-time World Series champions, is sure to be a memorable experience.

Debuted in 2009, this modern stadium of the Yankees takes baseball watching to a new level, with comfortable seating in the lower level and food concessions beyond curly fries. The Congo Gorilla Forest gives visitors a rare opportunity to see the Western lowland gorilla, mandrill, and okapi up close. The small community living on the 1.5-mile-long City Island is connected to the Bronx via a bridge from the edge of Pelham Bay Park. When you think of New York City's Little Italy, you're probably thinking of the one in lower Manhattan. But the city is home to a second Little Italy that has far fewer tourists, and just as excellent (if not better and more authentic) Italian restaurants and markets.

Located in the Belmont section of the Bronx, Little Italy here centers around Arthur Avenue. A short stroll down this bustling thoroughfare will reveal dozens of delectable restaurants serving everything from brick-oven pizza and homemade, bubbly lasagna to shops selling imported cheeses, antipasto, and dried pastas.

The historic neighborhood dates back more than a century. It was, and still is, a haven for Italian immigrants and today is one of the best places to visit in New York City for a glimpse of its multicultural colors.

Dating back to 1863, Woodlawn Cemetery is now a National Historic Landmark . It's easy to see why. The landscaped, 400-acre cemetery features classical architecture, monuments, as well as a large community of birds and other wildlife. It even has five of New York City's "Great Trees," which are trees that are unusual in size, species, form, or historical association.

Today the cemetery is the final resting place for more than 310,000 souls. It's a non-sectarian cemetery and was envisioned as a place for the "famous and powerful," according to the National Historic Landmark plaque.

While visiting the cemetery, guests can also explore the arboretum, which has more than 140 varieties of trees.

Wave Hill is part park and part horticultural garden and gives visitors a wonderful chance to connect with nature. This 28-acre once-private estate now belongs to the City of New York and is located in the Hudson Hill section of Riverdale. The estate had some luminary hosts, like Mark Twain and Teddy Roosevelt, throughout the years. The house that they resided in now houses a café serving beverages and snacks.

Spend some time browsing art at the Glyndor House Gallery before going on a leisurely walk on wooded trails affording expansive views of the Hudson River and the sheer cliffs of New Jersey Palisades. This year-round public parkland has manicured lawns and gardens, lily ponds, and benches at scenic overlooks. Wave Hill also offers guided walks, yoga classes, art workshops, exhibitions tied to nature, environmental programs, and concerts.

Admission to the estate is free on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Free shuttle services are also available from the Van Cortlandt Park-242nd Street subway stop and the Metro-North stop at Riverdale. Just down the hill from Wave Hill, you will find Riverdale Park, where you can see the Hudson River up close.

As the largest park in New York City, Pelham Bay Park eclipses Central Park three times over and boasts oak forests, marshes, and miles of shoreline, all spread across 2,772 acres. On the park's eastern shore, Bronx's only public beach, Orchard Beach, welcomes visitors in the warmer months.

Guests visiting the park can participate in horseback riding, tennis, bocce ball, football, and golf, among many other things to do.

The historic house and museum of Bartow-Pell Mansion , situated in the northern part of the park, invites visitors to admire its Greek-Revival-style architecture, elegant parlors and lavish design, and beautifully landscaped lawns and gardens.

New York City's third largest park sits in the northwestern part of the Bronx, lush with valleys and woodlands, and the borough's largest freshwater lake, the Van Cortlandt Lake, all spread over a thousand acres. There are plenty of opportunities to soak in this natural beauty with friends and family. There are playing fields and playgrounds scattered about, and a public golf course for your recreation.

History buffs can visit the Van Cortlandt House Museum , the oldest surviving building in the Bronx, built in 1748, to learn about the namesake family that occupied the house in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The 115-acre, 1.1-mile-long, Orchard Beach is Bronx's only public beach and is considered the "Riviera of New York." As such, it sees a number of sun worshippers during the summer.

The crescent-shaped sandy beach faces the Long Island Sound and overlooks City Island. Visitors can enjoy the Orchard Beach Snack Bar; picnic areas; BBQ areas; playgrounds; and basketball, volleyball, and handball courts.

Changing rooms and showers are also available. Parking is available for a small fee during the beach season and for free during other times. Orchard Beach can be reached by subway to the Pelham Bay Station.

Housed in a former synagogue donated by the City of New York, the Bronx Museum of the Arts showcases contemporary art reflecting the diverse cultures that make up the borough, and focuses on political and social themes relevant to the communities.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is located in the Grand Concourse Cultural District. It features a permanent collection of more than 2,000 artworks by artists of African, Latin American, and Asian backgrounds. The museum also offers events, educational programs, and group visits for students. Best of all, admission is free.

Bronx River is the city's only freshwater river, and visitors can enjoy a refreshing day out on the water on canoeing and paddling trips. The river runs 23 miles long and flows through southeast of New York (eight miles in the Bronx) and empties into the East River and ultimately into the Long Island Sound.

This once-polluted waterway has been cleaned and revitalized, thanks to environmental groups such as the Bronx River Alliance . The annual Bronx River Flotilla celebrates the river's comeback with a five-mile paddling excursion. The alliance also organizes paddling trips and other river activities.

Travel back in time to the world of poet Edgar Allan Poe, during a visit to his namesake 19th-century cottage, nestled between Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. Poe spent the last years of his life with his sick wife and mother-in-law at the cottage in the mid-1800s, hoping that the fresh country air would help heal his wife.

This tiny and charming cottage is tucked within Fordham University Rose Hill Campus's Poe Park and is operated by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Inside, you'll find reproductions of furniture from Poe's time, along with some of his personal items. This cottage served as the inspiration for his poem, Annabel Lee .

If you find yourself in the Bronx on a Saturday from May through October, head to Fordham Plaza for the free, open-air Bronx Night Market. It offers a taste of New York City's diverse culinary delights from more than 100 food vendors, as well as live music from local talent.

Expect to find flavorful provisions from eateries such as Mao's Bao, Rooster Boy, Chavas Empanadas, Mysttik Masaala, The BX Burger Co., and more. Fordham Plaza is a two-block commercial area located south of Fordham Road and across from the Fordham University's Rose Hill campus.

Mid-Range Hotels:

• The eclectic Umbrella Hotel is a top mid-range choice in The Bronx, which doesn't have any luxury properties. The 3-star hotel has modern rooms with an artsy vibe that come with wall-mounted flatscreen TVs and work desks. A free breakfast is offered. Parking is also complimentary. If you're traveling with a dog, the hotel is pet friendly.
• Residence Inn By Marriott New York The Bronx at Metro Center Atrium is near Yankee Stadium and other main Bronx attractions, including Fordham University. The 3-star hotel has a mix of rooms and suites, including options for families. Amenities in the suites include full kitchens and separate living and work areas. There is a free breakfast in the morning. Parking is also complimentary, and there is a workout room on-site.
• The Opera House Hotel is a boutique mid-range property. The 60 rooms comes in varying shapes and styles, but all feature blackout curtains, fridges, and microwaves. A complimentary breakfast is served in the morning. There is also a vending machine for late night snacks.
• Walking distance from Yankee stadium, the Best Western Plus Stadium Inn is in the up-and-coming Highbridge neighborhood. Rooms are colorful with bright accent walls and faux wood floors. On-site amenities include a complimentary breakfast and parking. There is also a workout room on-site.
• Also check out the Ramada by Wyndham Bronx . Rooms are basic but comfortable, but book one of the suites to have a Jacuzzi tub. There are also family room options. A free hot breakfast is served in the morning, and guests have complimentary access to a nearby gym if you want to workout.

Budget Hotels :

• Morris Guest House is an affordable budget choice. It is less than two miles from major borough attractions like Little Italy in the Bronx and Yankee Stadium. In a brick row house, the rooms have exposed brick walls and shared bathrooms. There is a kitchen guests can use. Free parking is also available.
• Comfort Inn & Suites near Stadium is another good-value choice. The rooms and suites have microwaves and refrigerators. Beds have crisp, white linens, and there are colorful patterned carpets on the floor. Amenities include a workout room, free breakfast, and concierge services.
• Rodeway Inn Bronx Zoo is another budget-friendly option. Snazzy rooms have beige, brown, and white color schemes and double or king beds. There is free parking on-site. Other amenities include free breakfast and a fitness room.

There’s no place like New York City , especially once you’ve had a chance to venture off to one of the five boroughs. Each part of the large metropolis holds the key to unlocking a world full of subculture and history. No matter where you land, you can find a place that is right for you — and this includes my birthplace, the Bronx. 

The borough attracts tourists for the Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, and “ the real Little Italy ” on Arthur Avenue, but there are a few attractions and hidden gems that the Bronx — often called “The Boogie Down” to honor its status as the birthplace of hip-hop — offers. No matter what type of traveler you are, there's plenty to discover and lots to explore. As a Bronx local, here are some of my top recommendations.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts

For those who appreciate local artists, the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts might be the best fine arts and music venue in the Bronx. Throughout the year, there are shows featuring global sounds from an array of musical genres. The schedule changes throughout the year — with notable past acts from the likes of Smokey Robinson and Stephanie Mills — so be sure to occasionally check the website to see what each season offers.

For those who would prefer to dine and jam to hip-hop classics instead, Beatstro lets the music serve as the focal point of the culinary experience. Located in the buzzing neighborhood of Mott Haven, visitors can choose from dishes with a cross-cultural blend of cooking styles paying homage to its rich Puerto Rican and Black influence. What’s more, the vibrant decor and live DJs create a vibe you can two-step to no matter whether you're there for happy hour, brunch, or dinner. 

The Lit Bar

The Lit Bar is the only indie bookstore in the borough. When Barnes & Noble closed in Co-Op City in 2016 , Noelle Santos took matters into her own hands by opening a sustainable, accessible bookshop to reflect the needs of the community she lived in. The shelves are filled with a curated selection of general-interest titles from authors around the world. What makes the literary staple special is the selection of wines and light food available for purchase so readers can sip and snack, too.

Poe Cottage

For fans of the famed poet Edgar Allen Poe, you can visit his final home — Poe Cottage , which was turned into a museum by The Bronx County Historical Society in 1975 — in the Fordham area of the Bronx. The visitor center offers rotating exhibits throughout the year and a virtual tour for those who cannot visit in person. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for members.

The Bronx Children’s Museum

If you have a young explorer, The Bronx Children’s Museum offers bright open-themed areas with interactive activities, a cool water exhibit, and large installations that will entertain and educate youth during their visit. The museum champions learning through play, with STEAM -based programs that caregivers can sign up for when the museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Advance registration is required.

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden

Tourists may know about the renowned New York Botanical Garden, but new visitors may be less familiar with the Bronx’s Everett Children’s Adventure Garden . It offers an array of science-based activities with drop-in programs during the week that families can explore together, from naming their own plant to creating mini-tapestries. Each season there are new multidisciplinary experiences to encourage young ones to investigate nature across the 12-acre landscape.

This gem in Mott Haven offers a dedicated homage to all things Bronx. The Bronx Native Shop is making quite the international name for itself by extending the brand beyond the shop, with frequent curated events that include local artists and community members. Shoppers can expect to see everything from apparel marked with the local call of “ Yerrrr ,” to my personal favorite, “Bodega Dreams,” which reflects the young Bronxite with big dreams for their community. 

Manahel Alshifa

If you need a place to find internationally sourced honey and body oils, then Manahel Alshifa is the spot. While the area itself may not attract tourists, this shop might. Customers can choose from several different kinds of honey (some are infused with ginger and saffron), spices, coffee, and henna. that you can sample. Everything is measured by the pound, with a few exceptions, and customers can sample products in the store.

Woodlawn Cemetery is home to some of the most famous New Yorkers and figures from around the world from entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker ( America's first Black female millionaire ) and Cuban singer Celia Cruz to American pianist Duke Ellington, to name a few. Visitors can access the historical landmark, which is the largest cemetery in New York City, by taking the 4 train to the last stop. There are  limited guided tours and events to give visitors a glimpse into the rich history of the borough. Case in point: did you know the Bronx was originally known as “ Rananchqua ” by the Siwanoy People of the Lenape Nation?

Those who love local eats rejoice: City Island is home to some of the most textured seafood dishes in a place that often feels like an entirely different city. The New-England-esque neighborhood boasts a selection of antique shops, galleries, and restaurants that line the main street. Locals from every inch of the borough can have a colorful debate on where one should go to eat but my pro tip is to try any pina colada and steamed clams at Johnny’s Reef .

Central Park is the first to come to mind when you think of New York City but there are other equally notable spaces. Take Pelham Bay Park , which is the largest park property in New York City. Or Van Cortlandt Park , which is home to the oldest building in the Bronx and the first municipal golf course in the country. Both parks offer hiking trails, walking paths, a chance to visit historic homes, nature houses, and educational guided activities provided by the city. While you may want to avoid being at either park at night, during the day in warmer months, there are designated barbeque areas where you can picnic, play sports, and swim in the local pools. It is also home to a diverse range of plants and wildlife to explore on your own.

5. Little Italy, The Bronx

6. Pelham Bay Park

The Bronx’s Pelham Bay Park is the largest park in all of New York City . There’s plenty to do here like hiking , biking , picnicking , and kayaking . Other attractions around the park include Orchard Beach , the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum , and the Bronx Victory Column .

7. Edgar Allan Poe Cottage

8. City Island, The Bronx

City Island is The Bronx’s best kept secret…and it’s a quaint little neighborhood on the shores of the Long Island Sound . It seems so uncharacteristic of typical NYC (thanks to its maritime history and seaside ambiance), but it’s one of our favorite little escapes. 9. The Bronx Night Market

This open-air night market brings together dozens of local vendors to serve the tastiest food and cuisines from across the borough (and world)! It takes over Fordham Plaza from April through the fall, and welcomes all kinds of crazy concoctions like mac & cheese fried burritos, enormous slices of carrot cake, fried chicken cones, and watermelon pizza! 10. Woodlawn Cemetery

Woodlawn Cemetery has been around since 1863, and it’s one of The Bronx’s most serene and beautiful places to visit. The cemetery is the burial spot for many prominent names including Duke Ellington and Miles Davis , and was even named a National Historic Landmark . We recommend checking out their guided tours, educational programs, and cultural events…or just taking a peaceful stroll through this historical grave site.

What to Do in the Bronx, According to Locals

Bronx locals will tell you that their borough is many things: the birthplace of hip-hop, a living gallery of street art , a global food crawl of family-run restaurants, a destination for world-class attractions including the New York Botanical Garden , the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the Bronx Zoo .

But recently, as the South Bronx has appeared in the press as an emerging neighborhood, few of these attributes have been mentioned—instead, the write-ups have largely heralded new development projects and controversial retail-and-dining complexes that have sparked backlash from residents about the neighborhood’s gentrification.

With this in mind, we talked to four South Bronx advocates with deep neighborhood roots and cultural connections, to find out, in their own words, what they want us to see when we visit their home—whether we’re traveling from another part of New York City or another part of the world.

Ed García Conde started blogging as a hobby eight years ago, and today, his writing career has grown into a full-time job: His Welcome2TheBronx blog is a respected resource for Bronx community news and opinions.

Feel like you’re eating homemade food from a friend’s kitchen at Xochimilco Family Restaurant . When you sit down to eat, you put yourself in the hands of Rafael and Susana Mata and their family, who manage everything from cooking to deliveries. “They have vegan tacos with pumpkin flower blossoms and mushrooms," says Conde. "There's traditional horchata , and they have the agua de jamaica , or hibiscus flower tea, which is cold-brewed and sweetened. Try the mole!”

Dive into Italian food at Yolanda’s , which has been owned by the same family for three generations. “A lot of people don’t think you can get Italian food in the South Bronx,” says Conde, who references farther-north Arthur Avenue as the better-known destination for Italian cuisine. “But you can: Yolanda’s has been around for almost 60 years.” How did this Italian restaurant come to have such a non-Italian name? The story goes that, back in 1960, the original sign-makers misspelled the name of family matriarch Mrs. Calisi—and ended up with Yolanda’s instead of Iolanda’s.

La Morada, which has been open since 2009, is a hub for community activists.

Taste West Africa in the Bronx at Baté Nabaya , which Guinea native Aissata Kaba opened in 2008. Though the menu is known to be more of a guideline than a list of exact offerings, Conde suggests the grilled fish and rice. “They have a coconut soup with rice that’s also really delicious. You can just walk around the South Bronx and run into these different kinds of restaurants.”

Get to know some of the borough's up-and-coming artists, especially those from underrepresented groups, at Longwood Gallery of the Arts . “They put on several exhibitions throughout the year. It’s all contemporary art and a lot of artists from the Bronx. Last year they had an amazing LGBT exhibition. It’s a great space to check out," says Conde.

Celebrate Puerto Rican and Latino culture in the Bronx and beyond with a play at Pregones . “This is an amazing theater with the mission to keep the Puerto Rican culture alive through plays,” says Conde. Today, the organization—which also has a venue in the heart of Broadway—offers a robust mix of theater, dance, music, and other performance arts, as well as training and education programs. Productions are offered in both English and Spanish.

Nilka Martell is a community activist who began her work with an effort to beautify her own block—the same one where she grew up and still lives. Her initial project grew into Loving the Bronx , an organization that promotes civic engagement, park and river clean-ups, advocacy, and tours. Martell sits on several green-focused boards, including the Bronx River Alliance and the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality.

Savor the flavors of real Oaxacan food, made from scratch by a Oaxacan family at La Morada . In March of 2017, La Morada sous chef Carolina Saavedra competed on Chopped , but that’s not the only claim to fame for this South Bronx staple, run by her family since 2009. “The gentleman there [founder Antonio Saavedra] is an immigrant from Mexico, and he’s a community activist on a whole other level. It’s not like you’re just going to eat," says Martell. "You’re going and getting this whole course on immigration and the immigration experience.”

Revel in natural beauty where you’d least expect it—by paddling out onto the Bronx River . “I tell people we’re more than the home of the Yankees, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden," says Martell. "We’re also the home to New York City’s only freshwater river.” Thanks to the Bronx River Alliance , there are many opportunities for visitors to get out on the water, from free canoeing, short paddling trips, and the annual Bronx River Flotilla, a five-mile paddling excursion and celebration of the revitalization of this once-polluted waterway.

The five-mile Bronx River Flotilla occurs annually every May.

Sam Goodman is an urban planner for the Bronx Borough President’s office. He grew up on the Grand Concourse and likes to say that he’s had a relative on the famous boulevard since 1927. He occasionally leads walking tours of the Concourse for the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Municipal Art Society, and the Art Deco Society of New York.

Visit the largest park in New York City, Pelham Bay Park , which comprises 2,772 acres. “You could fit three Central Parks in Pelham Bay Park," says Goodman, who also loves Van Cortlandt and Seton Falls parks for their untouched beauty, as compared to the landscaped Central Park. “[In Seton Falls,] you feel like you’re in some primeval forest. There are these little dirt paths and a natural stream, and it’s altogether isolated from everything. When you’re inside, you don’t see any sign of urban life, yet when you come out, there’s the city."

Stroll down the Grand Concourse, once known as the Boulevard of Dreams. Originally modeled after Paris's Champs-Élysées when it was conceived in the 1890s, the Bronx’s main thoroughfare is lined with a notable collection of Art Deco buildings. “The Grand Concourse was historically the best address in the Bronx, and one of the best in New York City for about 50 years," says Goodman. "Most of the apartments that line it are a reflection of what it was."

Start your DIY art tour at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and then hit the neighborhood’s many galleries.

Walk through the halls of a landmarked mansion with a very strange history, the Andrew Freedman Home . “Commissioned in the early 20th century to resemble an Italian palace, guests could live there for free, forever, and be treated to all amenities on one very odd condition,” says Goodman. "You had to prove you were at one time a millionaire who was now destitute. It lasted from 1922 to approximately 1970, and then the endowment Freedman had left expired.” Today, the landmarked mansion serves as a community arts hub, and there's even a bed and breakfast.

Juanita Lanzo is the director and curator of the Longwood Arts Gallery, the visual arts program of the Bronx Council on the Arts. She’s long been involved in the Bronx’s art community, mentoring emerging artists and curators in her current position, and previously working in visitor services at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Engage in a conversation about art and culture at BronxArtSpace . “I love that it’s run by women, I like the energy that they put out, and there are quality exhibitions with emerging artists," says Lanzo. Past exhibitions have focused on themes ranging from immigration to the pseudo-reality created by 3-D software. Coming up? A retrospective of works by Bronx-based street-art icons Tats Cru .

See how photography can build community at Bronx Documentary Center . “The Bronx Documentary Center is very focused on journalism and photojournalism, with a social-justice approach rather than for art's sake,” says Lanzo. A recent exhibition surveyed the evolution and importance of eyewitness accounts using technology like Facebook Live. Beyond the gallery, BDC holds frequent workshops, screenings and talks, a teen mentoring program, and an annual conference on gentrification.

Sample street art by veterans and newcomers at WallWorks gallery . Bronx-born graffiti pioneer John "Crash" Matos made his name painting trains in the 70s. In the 80s, he started to bring street art to the mainstream world when he curated the exhibition "Graffiti Art Success for America" at the South Bronx’s Fashion Moda studio, and later participated in shows alongside artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Today he runs the WallWorks gallery, which spotlights graffiti as well as other types of contemporary art from established and emerging creators. “They have amazing exhibitions,” says Lanzo. “I think when people can see themselves in art that is created by people like them, they can also relate to that.”

Getting Around The Bronx

Like much of New York City, most of The Bronx is walkable — and bikeable. Actually, Citi Bike stations are all over NYC, including The Bronx, and offer a budget-friendly way to get around in an eco-friendly way that also allows you to see the sights.

In terms of public transportation, the best way to get around The Bronx is via subway, which gets you anywhere you may need to go for just $2.75 — no need to wait in traffic.

Additionally, The Bronx (and the rest of NYC) is connected via other public transportation options like buses and even ferries. While buses are operated by the MTA, just like the subway, you’ll want to download the NYC Ferry app to see schedules and buy tickets for the ferry.

Prefer a private car service? Uber and Lyft are plentiful in The Bronx, though do note that cabs tend to be much cheaper. You can hail a cab on the a main street, which is the cheapest option, or use an app like Arro or Curb to order one.

Driving? It’s much easier to find parking in The Bronx than it is in Manhattan, though you can always use the SpotHero website and app to snag super discounted parking spots. This is especially recommended if you end up driving into Manhattan, where finding parking is a nightmare.

Subway and train lines in The Bronx generally run north-south, and are the best option for getting to and from the other boroughs. The 4/5/6 trains travel to the east side of Manhattan, while the B/D/1/2 trains go to the west side. Subway and commuter rail maps are available from the station agent at most subway stations. Metro-North Railroad commuter trains run about once every half-hour on weekdays and about once per hour on weekends at most stations, providing easy access between Grand Central Terminal, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. For more info: mta.info/mnr  

Every corner of The Bronx is accessible by bus, and it’s the best way to travel east-west across the borough. The Bronx has three Select Bus Service (SBS) routes, the Bx12 SBS serving Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway, the Bx41 SBS, serving Webster  Avenue, and the Bx6, servicing the south Bronx crosstown. Visit The Bronx: 6 Guided Tours of the Borough

Despite what you might have heard or read, The Bronx is a vibrant community with a personality like no other place in the world. It’s the home of hip-hop, salsa, doo-wop, the Grand Concourse, and Yankee Stadium. Bronx Little Italy Experience

When you hear “the real Little Italy,” the phrase refers to a bustling Italian-American neighborhood that’s brimming with mom-and-pop businesses and some of the freshest Italian food in New York City. But, this may come as a surprise – it’s not in Manhattan. The real Little Italy, also known as Arthur Avenue or Belmont, is located in The Bronx. On this 3.5-hour walking tour, come to know the history and culture of this dynamic district, loaded with delis, bakeries, restaurants, and specialty shops – all in the heart of the Bronx. You’ll quickly understand why Arthur Avenue has been deemed one of the great streets of America. Afterwards, visit the New York Botanical Garden, one of The Bronx’s most popular attractions.

  Introduction to The Bronx 101

Take this 1.5-mile walking tour along the Grand Concourse and witness the main thoroughfare’s revitalization. Modeled after Paris’s Champs-Elysees, the Grand Concourse was designed by Louis Alllys Risse and built during the “City Beautiful Movement,” opening in 1909. Although the street deteriorated in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, it began to recover in the early ‘90s. Today, this five-mile avenue features galleries, museums, and restaurants, and continues to reclaim its elegance. This three-hour tour transports guests through one of the most significant areas of The Bronx and ends at Yankee Stadium, where you can continue with a tour of the famed baseball field.

South Bronx Historic Tour

This legendary pocket of the borough is finally getting the love it deserves: the South Bronx was included in “52 Places to Go in 2017,” a list curated each year by The New York Times. A three-hour walking tour will allow you to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the up-and-coming Mott Haven and Port Morris neighborhoods. Reflect upon the past and present, and look toward the exciting future as the mostly industrial area continues to evolve, welcoming new businesses such as the lively Mott Haven Bar & Grill, Charlie’s Bar & Kitchen, and a branch of the hip coffeehouse, Filtered.

Little Ireland Tour

Woodlawn, also known as Woodlawn Heights, is one of the most beloved communities in the borough, and where scores of Irish immigrants have settled over the years. Peruse this neighborhood that’s situated in the northeast corner of The Bronx, wedged alongside beautiful Van Cortlandt Park and just south of Yonkers. On this tour, soak up the history; kick back with a pint at one of Little Ireland’s Irish pubs; and tour Woodlawn Cemetery– a National Historic Landmark and where Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, R.H. Macy and other prominent New Yorkers are buried.

Bronx Street Art Tour

Bronx streets have become a gallery for bold, politically and socially motivated murals, as well as works that pay tribute to the borough’s history. This walking tour allows you to grab an up-close-and-personal look at some of The Bronx’s unique art projects as well as learn more about the artists who created them. Peer inside the local culture and community, which act as a backdrop and an inspiration for pieces by street artists from around the globe.

City Island Tour

Did you know that there’s a New England-style fishing village in The Bronx? If your crew has at least 13 people, let Bronx Historical Tours take you on a six-hour group excursion through this small seaside community bordered by the Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay. The best things to do and places to visit in Moscow, Russia

While Moscow isn’t always at the top of everyone’s Europe bucket list , it’s certainly one of the best places to visit in Europe if you’re looking for a more alternative adventure! In this blog post I plan on sharing some of the free things to do in Moscow, as well as the best places to visit in Moscow, so that you can enjoy some of the best things to do in Russia! 

Moscow, the capital of Russia, sits in the European part of the country. It’s an incredibly beautiful city, which I personally found to be more beautiful than Saint Petersburg (which is often people’s preference). The capital is certainly a lot busier, and less laid back than Saint Petersburg , but it’s a much more colourful and vibrant city, full of stunning and unique architecture.

Visiting famous landmarks such as The Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral, enjoying some of the green space in Gorky Park, watching a ballet in the Bolshoi Theatre… these are just a few reasons that you should visit Moscow! On top of that, because of visa restrictions (we’ll get onto that later), it’s also one of the most unique destinations in Europe. 

There is a common misconception that Moscow is a dangerous city, but now that I’ve visited, I don’t believe this to be true. I would say the same rules apply here as to other large cities: avoid walking in dark areas alone at night, keep an eye on your belongings on public transport, and be streetwise. There’s no reason to avoid visiting this energetic city and miss out on these amazing things to do in Moscow! 

It would take months if you wanted to truly explore Moscow because it’s a huge city, but I’m going to share some of my favourite things to do in Moscow and places to visit in Moscow so that you can prepare for your upcoming adventure! Even if you’re only there for a few days, you should be able to fit in these highlights from my trip.

Where is Moscow?

If you’re wondering ‘Where is Moscow, Russia?’ then you’ve come to the right place! Moscow in in west Russia, the European part, and it’s the capital city. 

How do you get to Moscow?

Getting a visa for moscow:.

To get into Russia, you need to get a visa. The processing time is approximately 20 days, and you’ll need to have your fingerprints taken at a visa centre in London , Edinburgh or Manchester. You can find out more about getting a visa for Russia here.  

Getting to Moscow:

Once you’ve got your visa, the easiest way to get to Moscow from the UK is by flying. Direct flights between London and Moscow take just under four hours, and with an airport layover you’re looking at a 6-7 hour trip. You can also fly in from many other major European and international cities.

16 best places to visit in Moscow...

1. st basil’s cathedral.

The most iconic building in Russia and one of the most iconic buildings in the world. St Basil’s Cathedral is one of the best places to visit in Moscow, if not the best! 

St Basil’s is situated on Red Square, where you’ll also find many other popular places to visit in Moscow. In my opinion this still stands out against them all. There’s something about the multi coloured domes against the Moscow skyline that I found quite spectacular. 

Although I’d already been in Russia for several days, it wasn’t until I was at this amazing piece of architecture that I really felt I was in Russia.

The cathedral was built by order of Ivan the Terrible, and apparently after the architect completed it, Ivan blinded him so that he could never build anything more beautiful. Whether or not this story is true, it certainly adds a bittersweet feeling as you stand admiring the beauty of St Basil’s Cathedral.

Inside is a museum displaying many historic items once used at the cathedral, which costs 700 rubles to enter. In my opinion it’s worth the entry fee, as simply seeing the ornate interior walls is a spectacle in itself.

2. The Kremlin

This historic fortress that sits on Red Square is probably the largest landmark and one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. It’s the official residence of the President, although he doesn’t actually live there. It’s been rebuilt many times since it was first constructed in 1147 out of wood, before Ivan III the Great ordered it to be made from stone, which is the Kremlin you’ll recognise today. 

This place is huge, and there’s quite a lot to see. The first problem I had was finding where the entrance was. Even though I had a pre-booked ticket, I was then told I still had to visit the ticket office to exchange it for another ticket. I also needed my passport, so make sure you have yours if you plan to visit the Kremlin. After a lengthy queue I finally had a ticket I could use to enter the Kremlin, and had to go through security. The security here is thorough, so make sure you don’t take too much in with you. I had my pockets full, and it was a nightmare emptying them and explaining each item, before I was finally allowed in. Once inside you can pay for extra tickets to visit the various museums, however there’s also quite a lot to see simply on the grounds if you don’t want to spend too much.

There’s so much to see here, including The Assumption Cathedral, Ivan the Great Bell Tower Complex, the Grand Kremlin Palace, the Armoury Chamber and Diamond Fund. There is also the Tsar Cannon (a huge artillery cannon), and the Tsar Bell. The Tsar Bell is the largest bell in the world. An incident with a fire and water being poured over the bell caused it to crack and for a slab to break off from it, which can now be seen propped up next to it.

As you walk around the grounds you’ll hear the sound of whistles. The guards patrolling the area will blow a whistle at anyone walking where they shouldn’t. Even if it’s just on the grass, or towards more restricted areas. This can sometimes be funny to watch, as often the tourists will be in a world of their own whilst a guard is blowing a whistle at them. Sometimes a guard will be stood face to face with a tourist angrily blowing their whistle before the tourist realises they need to get back onto the main path.

This is perhaps one of the more unusual places to visit in Moscow! Gum is a huge department store situated on Red Square. It’s an interesting department store to walk around, with several levels, although the shops inside are certainly quite pricey. It’s a beautiful building when it’s lit up at night, and it seems to fit in nicely amongst the other famous sights on Red Square. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything here, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to take a quick look inside, although bear in mind there are usually security checks before entering.

4. State Historical Museum

The large crimson building on Red Square is now the State Historical Museum. It was originally the first pharmacy in Russia, and later a University before finally becoming the museum it is today.

Unfortunately I didn’t go inside as my time was limited and there was so much else I wanted to see, but if you have the time I think it would be one of the best things to do in Moscow. There are items dating back to the 6th century, and maybe even further. There’s also a library inside storing many ancient manuscripts and the largest coin collection in Russia. 

5. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi means big in Russian, so it roughly translates to large theatre. The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the foremost ballet companies in the world. The exterior of the building is an impressive sight, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow, and it’s certainly worth admiring from the outside. There are guided tours of the interior, but if you really want to experience the theatre, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to watch a ballet here.

I was torn between booking a seat, but the ballets were very expensive. I’d have liked to have seen “Swan Lake”, (as at least I may have recognised some of the music). Unfortunately there were no performances on the days I was in Moscow, so I decided to pass. But if I return to Russia, then watching a ballet will be on my list of things to do.

6. Sparrow Hills

If you want a good view of the city, then Sparrow Hills is one of the best places to visit in Moscow. It’s a bit of a trek outside of the centre, but if you have the time then it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. There’s a viewing platform here which gives you fantastic panoramic views of Moscow.

Nearby you’ll see the magnificent Moscow State University building, which is one of the seven sisters of Moscow.

7. Seven Sisters

Whilst in Moscow, you’ll no doubt notice these magnificent soviet skyscrapers dotted around the city. At the time of construction they were the tallest buildings in Europe, Moscow State University being so until 1997. There are, as the name suggests, seven in total, which are: Hotel Ukraina, Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Apartments, the Kudrinskaya Square Building, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Moscow State University, and the Red Gates Administrative Building.

If you visit Sparrow Hills, then you’ll come across Moscow State University, but I’m certain as you explore the city, you’ll see more of these giants against the Moscow skyline. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to see if you can locate all seven as you wander round the city! 

8. Nikolskaya Street

The start of this street is found by Red Square. It’s one of the most prominent pedestrianised streets in Moscow, filled with shops, restaurants and bars, so one of the best places to visit in Moscow if you’re looking for a bite to eat or some souvenirs!

What makes this street extra special are the thousands of bright lights in the sky above. After dark it looks simply magical with the many colourful lights overhead as you walk beneath them. One of the best things to do in Moscow is to visit Nikolskaya Street after dark and see them for yourself. It almost feels like Christmas in London!

There is another street nearby which also features similar lights, “Kuznetskiy Most”, which is also quite beautiful, but I thought “Nikolskaya Street” was ever slightly more impressive.

9. Izmailovo Kremlin and Izmaylovskiy Bazar

Did you know that The Kremlin in Red Square is not the only Kremlin in Moscow? Kremlin actually means a type of fortress, so there are many in Russia.

The Izmailovo Kremlin is a fairly new addition to the city, having been built in 2007 as a cultural centre. With its multitude of colours and historic style, it has a real fairytale feel to it. There are several small museums here for you to explore, devoted to subjects such as Russian folk art, vodka and bread (yes, bread). Visiting these is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Moscow! 

It’s a little way out of the centre, but it’s an interesting place to visit in Moscow to see something a little bit different, and it won’t be as overcrowded with tourists. 

Next to the Izmailovo Kremlin is the best market in Moscow for souvenirs. You’ll find good and poor quality items, but you’ll certainly pick up a bargain if you take your time and haggle for a good price. Many of the items here you’ll get for half the price you would in souvenir shops in the city centre. It’s here that I picked up several Matryoshka dolls for a very good price. I think I’d have paid more than double, or possibly even triple if I’d have bought them elsewhere.

10. Izmailovsky Park

Not too far from Izmailovo Kremlin you’ll find this huge park, one of the prettiest places to visit in Moscow. It’s easy to get lost here, so try to make sure you keep track of where you entered if you plan to go back the same way. There’s a lot to see in this park, a round pond, ferris wheel, playgrounds and sports grounds, shooting galleries, cinemas and a skate park.

There are often festivals, concerts and exhibitions at the park, on top of firework displays and dance parties.

The main reason I chose to visit the park was to find the painted trees. A local artist “Yevgenia Khlynina” has been painting on trees in this park, and one of the best things to do in Moscow is to explore the park looking for them. One of the most famous pieces of hers is the “Hedgehog in the Fog” from a famous soviet cartoon.

11. Gorky Park

The most famous park in Moscow is named after the writer “Maxim Gorky”. Although it’s likely you’ve heard it mentioned in the song “Wind of Change” by “The Scorpions”. 

There’s lots to do and see in the park with sports facilities and exhibitions. During the summer months this is one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for things to do in Moscow; there are often open air concerts and an open air cinema. There are many statues and sculptures in the park, including a small sculpture park area which features many interesting pieces.

One piece of advice: don’t visit Gorky Park or any other parks on 2nd August if you’re in Russia. 2nd August is Paratrooper day, which usually encourages a lot of drinking in the park, which is not always very welcoming.

12. Arbat Street

One of the oldest and busiest streets in Moscow, and the most famous pedestrian street in the city. Arbat is one of the most popular places to visit in Moscow. There are several shops including many dedicated to souvenirs, but although these will have a good range of goods, they will be quite expensive . You may see street performers and buskers, and there are often poets reciting famous works, if not their own works.

It’s within walking distance from the Kremlin, which should only take around 10 minutes.

There are actually two streets with this name, Old Arbat Street and New Arbat Street. Old Arbat Street is where you’ll find the pedestrianised area. New Arbat Street is a separate street which runs alongside a main road, filled with many bars and restaurants.

13. Metro station art

The best way to get around Moscow is by using the metro, and the metro is a tourist attraction in itself.

Although I obviously didn’t visit every metro station, I believe that every single station is unique in its own beautiful way. Many of the stations I passed through were impressive, quirky or simply jaw dropping. You’ll more than likely pass through many of them on the way to other sights, but I’d recommend the following:  Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Teatralnaya, Arbatskaya, Prospekt Mira and Ploschad Revolutsii (be sure to pet the dog statue for good luck).

There are of course many others for you to explore, but these are the ones I considered to be some of the most impressive places to visit in Moscow (even if they’re only metro stations!).

VDNKh is an exhibition centre with many monuments and museums. Now that it’s combined with the Botanical Garden and Ostankino Park, one of the best things to do in Moscow is to spend the day at this recreational centre enjoying a mix of nature and culture. The most popular museum in the complex which you shouldn’t miss on your trip to Moscow is the Museum of Cosmonautics.

15. Lenin's Mausoleum

Despite requesting to be buried with his mum in St Petersburg, it is at the foot of the Kremlin on Red Sqaure that you will find Lenin’s Mausoleum, where Vladimir Ilych Lenin has been frozen in time since 1924. It’s only open for a few hours a few times per week. Photography is not allowed, and you should line up on the western corner of the square (near Alexander Garden) to wait you turn to see the embalmed body. 

16. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Moscow. Located south west of the centre you’ll find this stunning monastery. Inside you’ll find a cathedral and several churches, surrounded by high walls and 12 towers.

T he NYPD on Tuesday released a picture and video of the gunman who opened fire on an SUV parked outside a Bronx McDonald’s, killing one man and wounding another.

Adrian Mendoza, 24, and Jhombeyker Bisbal, 31, were ambushed just past 4 a.m. April 15 as they sat in a 2015 Nissan Rogue outside a McDonald’s on E. 149th St. near Morris Ave. in Mott Haven.

A gray Honda Civic pulled up, with a passenger getting out and walking past the victims, then doubling back, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said a day after the incident.

He approached the driver’s side of the car and shot Mendoza, who had been driving, in the head and body, Kenny said. The gunman then went to the front of the SUV and fired numerous shots through the windshield, hitting Bisbal twice in the chest, twice in the arm and twice in the shoulder, Kenny said.

Medics took Mendoza and Bisbal to nearby Lincoln Hospital, where the younger man died. Bisbal, listed in critical condition at the time, is recovering.

Kenny at the time said both victims are Venezuelan nationals and had previously been arrested in Texas by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

The motive for the shooting wasn’t clear at the time, though Kenny noted that both shooting victims had in their pockets wire transfer receipts and that detectives were checking to see if that was a factor.

Anyone with information about the gunman is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Man accused of punching seven random women in New York City is arrested

A man accused of assaulting random women in New York City was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Daquan Armstead, 31, of East Bronx, was taken into custody on suspicion of hate-motivated assaults on seven women from late March to mid-April in Lower Manhattan, police said.

Authorities allege he punched women, sometimes in the face, on their heads, or on their backs.

When asked about the allegations while being taken out of the New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force office, Armstead responded, "They spit at me." Police refuted the suspect’s claim that victims had spit on him.

It wasn't clear Tuesday evening if he has retained legal counsel. New York County Defender Services, which provides defense attorneys for many criminal cases, noted that a public record of his arrest was unavailable.

Armstead was arrested on suspicion of hate crime/assault; suspicion of attempted hate crime; and suspicion of aggravated harassment, according to the NYPD's Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information.

Police told NBC New York there have been 95 unprovoked assaults in Manhattan so far this year, with 50 of them involving victims who are women.

At least one arrest was made previously in connection with a series of attacks earlier this spring that gained attention after some of the women told their stories on TikTok.

The allegations involving Armstead do not appear to be any of the attacks seen on social media.

The department released a timeline of alleged attacks:

About 8 p.m. March 24, police received a report of a 30-year-old woman who was struck on her face in the Lower East Side, the NYPD said. It was a hard enough hit that it caused dizziness, but she refused medical attention, it said.

The next day, shortly after 10 a.m., officers responded a few blocks to the northwest based on a report that a 36-year-old woman was struck on the back, the NYPD said. She also refused medical treatment.

Shortly after 8 a.m. April 2, officers responded to an incident in which "an unknown individual" struck a 38-year-old woman on the back of the head in Greenwich Village, the NYPD said. She also refused medical attention, it said.

About 12:25 p.m. April 5, officers responded to the Lower East Side, where it was reported someone struck a 25-year-old woman on the right side of her face, the NYPD said. She refused treatment, it said.

A few minutes later and a few blocks away, officers responded to the Lower East Side after it was reported that someone struck a 44-year-old woman on the right side of her face, the department said. She also refused treatment.

About 9:45 a.m. April 8, police responded to a report of a 24-year-old woman struck on the back of her head on the Lower East Side, the NYPD said. She refused medical attention, it said.

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. April 17, police responded to a report of a 27-year-old woman struck on the head by an "unknown individual" in Lower Manhattan, the department said. She refused medical attention, it said.

The summer months (June-August) are a great time to travel to Moscow to take advantage of the enjoyable mild temperatures. This is considered peak travel season. Bear in mind that hotel prices rise along with the temperatures!

An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!

The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!

If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.

Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!

No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!

Red Square | Moscow Kremlin | Lenin’s Mausoleum | St. Basil’s Cathedral  | GUM Department Store

Spend the first day of your itinerary taking your own self guided Moscow walking tour around the historic Red Square! This is Moscow’s compact city center and every stop on this list is within easy walking distance to the next! Get ready to see all of the top Moscow landmarks!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

• Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
• Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees. 
• Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

• Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
• Cost: USD $15.00
• Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

• Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
• Cost: USD $8.00
• Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Novodevichy Convent | Gorky Park | State Tretyakov Gallery | All-Russian Exhibition Center | Bolshoi Theater

On your 2 day itinerary in Moscow, you’ll have a chance to use the city’s excellent public transportation service! You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!
• Cost: USD $5.00
• Food nearby: Culinary Shop Karavaevs Brothers is a cozy and simple place to have a quick bite, they also have vegetarian options!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!
• Cost: Free! 
• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

• Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!

• Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

• A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
• Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
• The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

• The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
• Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
• Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

• Closed on Mondays
• Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
• The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Sergiev Posad (Golden Ring)

Exclusive — Lee Zeldin: Trump Should Hold Madison Square Garden Rally, Visit Black Churches

It would send a strong message if former President Donald Trump visits minority communities in New York, showing he is a “man of the people,” former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) said during an interview on Breitbart News Saturday , explaining that the former president would receive a “hero’s welcome” holding rallies in places such as Madison Square Garden.

When asked if Trump should hold a rally at Madison Square Garden, making a play for New York, Zeldin said the former president absolutely should.

“Yes, absolutely. He should do it, and he will sell it out. President Trump, when he shows up, if he shows up in a place like Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium or Citi Field, or the Barclays Center for any of these sporting events or UFC matches that are going on, he’s getting these hero’s welcome. He will continue to get that type of reception if he continues to show up in these big arenas,” he said, noting that President Biden does not receive the same welcome.

“When somebody like President Trump shows up at one of these venues —  he should have the rally. … I think that the event in what they call the world’s most famous arena would be something that would send shockwaves across this entire country,” Zeldin said. “The reception would be amazing. I can’t wait to see it actually happen.”

Zeldin said he believes Trump should continue to campaign in these cities, some of the bluest places, and if he does, the former congressman believes many on the left “would be surprised to see how well he’d be received.”

“Keep campaigning inside of these cities; hit the issues that matter. Most of these longtime Democratic voters who have been getting screwed by democratic policies, they are fed up with the Democratic Party. They want to try something new. President Trump proved during four years in office that he’s representing so many of these communities well. He wants to keep these families safer, more prosperous, higher quality education, and combat illegal immigration. So much of what these Democrat voters are saying they want going different in this country, President Trump shows up with a formula to be able to get it done and make their lives better,” Zeldin continued.

“Keep it up, and it creates a massive math problem for the Democrats because President Trump will be carving up their base in so many different ways it would be glorious to watch,” he continued, noting that Trump should visit a black church “whether it be Harlem or East New York in Brooklyn.”

“I think he should go do an interview on The Breakfast Club . Go in studio with Charlamagne tha God, and I think that he can do a great job holding his own. He should get into South Bronx and visit with the Hispanic community there. They have longtime Democrats, including longtime Democrat elected officials, who want President Trump to come. They will give him the hero’s welcome he deserves. They want to work with him because they care that much about their city, state, and country,” Zeldin said, explaining that visiting these communities is the type of grassroots campaign events that show Trump is truly a “man of the people.”

“And what I love most about it is how natural he is in that — in that environment,” Zeldin said, noting that President Biden does not receive the same reception in these places.

“It’s painful, we cringe watching it. … But President Trump shows up in these places and people start saying to themselves, you know what, if President Trump can get that type of reception here in New York City, he can get this reception — type of reception just about anywhere in this state, like New York, or places like New Jersey or Minnesota,” Zeldin said, expressing confidence that Trump can expand the map.
