Voyager: 15 incredible images of our solar system captured by the twin probes (gallery)

The twin probes have captured some remarkable images of our cosmic neighborhood.

voyager multiple images

NASA's twin probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have captured some truly remarkable images of our solar system and are currently roaming through interstellar space.

Despite its name Voyager 2 launched before Voyager 1 , when it lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 41 aboard a Titan IIIE-Centaur on Aug. 20, 1977. Voyager 1 followed suit about two weeks later on Sept. 5.

While Voyager 1 primarily focused on Jupiter and Saturn , Voyager 2 visited both gas giants and then ventured on to Uranus and Neptune . But the duo didn't stop there. Voyager 1 officially entered interstellar space on Aug. 25, 2012, while Voyager 2 entered on Nov. 5, 2018. The pair continue to journey through the cosmos and have enough power and fuel to keep scientific instruments running until at least 2025, according to NASA .

Here we celebrate the achievements of both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 with some incredible images captured by the pair.

This image was taken when NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft zoomed toward Jupiter in January and February 1979, capturing hundreds of images during its approach, including this close-up of swirling clouds around Jupiter's Great Red Spot .

This image of the Earth and moon are in a single frame. Voyager was the first spacecraft to achieve this and captured the iconic image on Sept. 18, 1977, by Voyager 1 when it was 7.25 million miles from Earth. The moon is at the top of the picture and beyond the Earth as viewed by Voyager.

Color composite by Voyager 2 showing Jupiter's faint ring system. Images captured in July 1979.

A Voyager 1 image of Jupiter's moon Io showing the active plume of the volcano Loki. The heart-shaped feature southeast of Loki consists of fallout deposits from the active plume Pele. The images that make up this mosaic were taken from an average distance of approximately 340,000 miles (490,000 kilometers) from the moon.

Layers of haze covering Saturn's moon Titan are seen in this image taken by Voyager 1 on Nov. 12, 1980, at a range of 13,700 miles (22,000 km). This false-color image shows the details of the haze that covers Titan. The upper level of the thick aerosol above the moon's limb appears orange.

This view of Uranus was recorded by Voyager 2 on Jan. 25, 1986, as the spacecraft left the planet behind and set forth on the cruise to Neptune. Even at this extreme angle, Uranus retains the pale blue-green color seen by ground-based astronomers and recorded by Voyager during the historic encounter.

This Voyager 2 high-resolution color image provides obvious evidence of vertical relief in Neptune's bright cloud streaks. These clouds were observed at a latitude of 29 degrees north near Neptune's east terminator, the "line" on a planet where daylight meets darkness.

Global color mosaic of Triton , taken in 1989 by Voyager 2 during its flyby of the Neptune system. The color was synthesized by combining high-resolution images taken through orange, violet and ultraviolet filters; these images were displayed as red, green and blue images and combined to create this color version.

Saturn and three of its moons, Tethys, Dione and Rhea, seen by a Voyager spacecraft on Aug. 4, 1982, from a distance of 13 million miles (21 million km).

This narrow-angle color image of the Earth, dubbed the "Pale Blue Dot," is a part of the first ever 'portrait' of the solar system taken by Voyager 1. The spacecraft acquired a total of 60 frames for a mosaic of the solar system from a distance of more than 4 billion miles (6 billion km) from Earth and about 32 degrees above the ecliptic, which is the plane that contains most of the planets of the solar system.

Voyager 1 took photos of Jupiter and two of its satellites (Io, left, and Europa ).

Enhanced color view of Saturn's ring system captured by Voyager 2 on Aug. 17, 1981, at a distance of 5.5 million miles (8.9 million km). The color variations between the rings possibly indicate variations in chemical composition from one part of Saturn's ring system to another.

Close-up of the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa captured by Voyager 2 at a distance of 152,000 miles (246,000 km).

Voyager 2 captured this image of Neptune's rings on Aug. 26, 1989, from a distance of 175,000 miles (280,000 km).

A false-color image of Callisto captured on July 7, 1979, by Voyager 2 at a distance of about 677,000 miles (1.09 million km). Callisto is the second largest moon of Jupiter and is the most heavily cratered of the Galilean satellites.

Yes (sigh) satellites are real. False claim that search results are all renders | Fact check

voyager multiple images

The claim: Google Images does not show real pictures of satellites because space is not real

A Dec. 20, 2023, Facebook video ( direct link , archive link ) shows three men discussing satellites and the debunked flat Earth conspiracy theory.

"Google images of satellites," says bodybuilder and influencer Bradley Martyn. "I've never seen a satellite that was real. I'm not a flat earther, I'm just saying."

Brendan Schaub, a podcast host and former MMA fighter, replies, "That is very strange now that you bring that up."

Later, MMA fighter and actor Rampage Jackson claims, "The sun and the moon is (sic) real, but outer space is not."

The video's caption reads, "Google Satellites in Space, click images. Any of those look real to you?"

A more recent Facebook video making the same claim was shared more than 2,000 times in two weeks before it was deleted.

Fact check roundup: Debunking the flawed science behind flat Earth claims

More from the Fact-Check Team: How we pick and research claims | Email newsletter | Facebook page

Our rating: False

There are real images of satellites in Google image search results. And scientists have plenty of evidence to prove space exists and that the Earth is spherical, not flat.

Search results show many real images of satellites

A Google image search returns many digitally rendered images of man-made satellites , but contrary to the video's claim, there are real images of satellites in the search results too. Here are some of the images returned in our Google results:

  • This image of the Hubble Space Telescope, released by NASA , shows it returning to orbit after its second servicing mission in February 1997. There are many real images of the space telescope orbiting the planet.
  • This image of the International Space Station, distributed by Getty Images , was taken from the space shuttle Discovery near the end of a mission to transport people and supplies to and from the space station.
  • This image , released by SpaceX , shows the first 60 Starlink satellites as they were deployed in Earth's orbit in May 2019. The satellites are meant to provide low-cost internet to remote locations.
  • This image , released by NASA , shows SpaceX's Dragon capsule approaching the International Space Station on a resupply mission in January 2015. The capsule delivered more than 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments.

Fact check : A 'sex magic ritual'? No, NASA rockets are to study atmosphere during eclipse

An abundance of evidence shows the Earth is a sphere, including images of the planet taken from space. And the video's claim that space does not exist is nonsense too. The Hubble Space Telescope has photographed thousands of distant galaxies and other celestial objects, and so has its more modern equivalent, the James Webb Space Telescope .

USA TODAY reached out to the social media user who shared the post for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

PolitiFact also debunked the claim.

Editor’s note: It is the Post Independent’s policy to not name those accused of sex crimes unless they are a person of public trust such as a teacher, counselor, pastor or other similar positions. The person in this case is named because they held a position of public trust.

Glenwood Springs Police Department Officer Sean Tatro was arrested by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office on a series of charges Thursday, including felony menacing, sexual assault, and use of a stun gun in the commission of a crime. The arrest followed a report by the Silt Police Department regarding a domestic violence incident that took place on Tuesday.

Tatro was serving as a school resource officer in Glenwood Springs at the time of the incidents, but is “no longer on active duty and has been placed on administrative leave,” a city news release states.

The initial observation by a Silt Police lieutenant depicted Tatro as driving recklessly around a young woman, later identified as his romantic partner, in a manner described as intimidating and aggressive. This incident triggered further investigation, revealing a pattern of alleged abuse and misconduct. Tatro, who took a position with the Glenwood Springs Police Department in March of 2022 and was assigned as the school resource officer in Glenwood Springs, has since been placed on administrative leave following his arrest.

According to the affidavit, the relationship between Tatro and the victim involved numerous incidents of physical and sexual abuse. The affidavit indicates that Tatro supplied the victim, who is under 21 years of age, with alcohol and marijuana and engaged in violent behavior, including choking and threatening the victim during arguments. In one incident, Tatro is accused of shocking the victim with a stun gun during a confrontation, causing her to fall and injure her leg.

The victim detailed multiple instances of abuse spanning several months, including threats to her life. According to the affidavit, the victim recounts moments where Tatro became physically aggressive, such as slapping the victim across the face, shoving the victim to the ground, and other acts of violence that left the victim bruised and frightened for her safety. The victim also described in the affidavit encounters where Tatro’s actions included driving dangerously close to her in his vehicle, heightening her fear of being physically harmed.

Tatro and the victim met in October at a high school event, and their relationship evolved into encounters primarily in vehicle parking lots. The victim expressed that these meetings often involved alcohol and escalated to physical intimacy, which over time became increasingly coercive and abusive, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit also mentions that Tatro took advantage of his position as a police officer, intimidating her with his knowledge of law enforcement tactics and access to weapons. According to a statement, Tatro told the victim to “not report him because he has his way of passing drug tests. Sean also told her that no one would believe her if she reported any abuse or marijuana use that occurred because Sean was a cop.”

Tatro is charged with felony menacing, felony sexual assault, felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor (18-21), felony use of a stun gun in the commission of a crime, felony second degree assault, misdemeanor harassment, misdemeanor third degree assault and misdemeanor reckless endangerment, according to the affidavit.

“If the charges are proven to be true, the administrative consequences from the city and the police department will be swift and deliberate,” Glenwood Police Chief Joseph Deras said in the release. “These allegations are absolutely contrary to our culture and expectations and run counter to everything we stand for. Such behavior has no place in the department and our community.”

Rudy Giuliani’s Mounting Legal Trouble: Here Are All The Issues Trump Attorney Faces Amid Arizona Indictment

Former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani was reportedly indicted on criminal charges in Arizona for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election—the latest in a slew of legal troubles the former New York City mayor is facing, including criminal charges in Georgia.

Rudy Giuliani, leaves the U.S. District Court on May 19 in Washington, DC.

Arizona Indictment: Giuliani is one of 18 Trump allies who were indicted on criminal charges in Arizona on Wednesday—media reports indicate he was charged, though his name remains redacted in the indictment—on allegations they fraudulently helped Trump try to overturn the 2020 election or signed on to a false slate of electors.

Georgia Indictment: Giuliani was indicted on 13 felony counts in Fulton County, Georgia, for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election as former President Donald Trump’s attorney, as part of a broader racketeering case against 19 defendants in total, including the former president (he has pleaded not guilty to the charges).

Georgia Defamation Case: Giuliani was sued for defamation by two Georgia election workers who he falsely tied to an unfounded conspiracy theory about voter fraud in 2020, which resulted in a protracted legal battle that ended with a jury ordering Giuliani to pay $148 million in damages—a ruling that prompted Giuliani to file for bankruptcy and was upheld by a federal judge in April.

Hunter Biden: Biden sued Giuliani , his limited liability companies and former lawyer Robert Costello in September 2023, accusing the former mayor and his attorney of tampering with Biden’s digital data recovered from his laptop, after conservatives—including Giuliani—used the laptop to push often-unproven allegations of wrongdoing by President Joe Biden.

DOJ Indictment: Giuliani is believed to be “co-conspirator 1” in a separate federal indictment charging Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, his attorney has acknowledged , after the document described an “attorney who was willing to spread knowingly false claims and pursue strategies that the Defendant's 2020 re-election campaign attorneys would not.”

Though the indictment alleges Giuliani was involved with Trump’s allegedly unlawful conspiracy to overturn the election results, he has not been charged in the investigation—though special counsel Jack Smith noted the DOJ’s investigation is still ongoing, so it’s not ruled out that he could be charged in the future.

Noelle Dunphy: Giuliani is facing a $10 million lawsuit brought by former associate Noelle Dunphy, who accused the attorney of a range of misconduct including sexual assault and harassment, with audio transcripts released last week as part of the case capturing Giuliani allegedly making sexually explicit comments, along with disparaging comments about Jewish men and actor Matt Damon, which included making a homophobic slur.

Dominion and Smartmatic: Giuliani has also been sued by voting machine companies Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic for spreading false election fraud claims involving their machines, and though a court initially dismissed some of the allegations against Giuliani in the Smartmatic case, an appeals court reinstated them in February 2023.

Staten Island Lawsuit: Giuliani was sued in May for false arrest by Daniel Gill, who slapped the attorney on the back and said, “What’s up, scumbag?” at a grocery store, and was charged with third-degree assault after Giuliani claimed Gill hit him.

Gill argues video footage of the incident shows he only “tapped” Giuliani “to get his attention,” and he was “put through the system” at Giuliani’s urging and the attorney conspired with police to “deprive [Gill] of his liberty.”

Disbarment: Giuliani has had his law license suspended in New York and Washington, D.C., due to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and proceedings are ongoing over whether he’ll be fully disbarred—the D.C. disciplinary panel has recommended his disbarment, but Giuliani intends to appeal the decision.

What To Watch For

Giuliani has not yet been formally arraigned yet in Arizona, and his name is expected to remain redacted on the public indictment until all parties in the case have been served. It’s still not clear when his criminal case in Georgia will go to trial, and the civil cases against him remain ongoing.

Chief Critic

Giuliani has strongly denied all the legal allegations against him and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in Georgia, calling them an “affront to American democracy.” He has not yet responded to the Arizona indictment. Giuliani spokesperson Ted Goodman has described him as having a “consensual relationship” with Dunphy and denied reports about the allegations in the case as “smears and attacks against a man who has dedicated his life to serving others,” and said the ruling against him in the Georgia election workers’ lawsuit should be “reversed” and was “a prime example of the weaponization of the justice system, where the process is the punishment.” About the Hunter Biden lawsuit, Goodman said Tuesday he was “not surprised [Biden is]

Giuliani has had some legal wins in litigation and investigations against him, with federal prosecutors dropping an investigation in 2022 into whether Giuliani followed foreign lobbying laws without bringing any charges. A federal judge also dismissed two lawsuits against Giuliani that sought to hold him liable for the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol building, ruling Giuliani’s speech before the riot, in which he called for “trial by combat,” was protected speech.

Giuliani’s legal woes led to him reporting dire financial issues that have hampered his ability to pay his legal bills and fees—and ultimately resulted in him filing for bankruptcy in December after the $148 million fine was levied against him. The attorney pointed to his money troubles as his reason for not paying sanctions in the Georgia election workers’ defamation case before the lawsuit went to trial, and attorney Robert Costello sued Giuliani in September 2023 for $1.4 million in unpaid attorneys fees. Giuliani reportedly went to Mar-A-Lago to personally ask Trump to help him with his legal bills—leading to the ex-president helping Giuliani out at a fundraiser —and the attorney put his Manhattan apartment on the market for $6.5 million as his legal troubles grew.

Key Background

Giuliani, formerly the mayor of New York City, led the Trump campaign’s broadly unsuccessful legal effort to overturn the 2020 election, which included dozens of lawsuits that nearly all failed. The attorney only directly represented the campaign in one case in Pennsylvania , which failed, and also was involved with alleged efforts to pressure state lawmakers and officials to overturn the results. Giuliani is one of a number of lawyers involved with the post-election effort who are now facing consequences for doing so, along with Sidney Powell, John Eastman and Lin Wood. Those lawyers have also faced potential disbarment for their roles in trying to challenge the vote count, and Powell is similarly being sued by Dominion and Smartmatic. Giuliani is one of six co-conspirators listed in the indictment as helping Trump’s scheme, and while no one is identified by name in the court filing, the other conspirators are believed to include Eastman, Powell, DOJ attorney Jeffrey Clark and Kenneth Chesebro. All five of the attorneys were later charged as part of the Fulton County probe (the sixth co-conspirator’s identity remains unconfirmed).

NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew closely past distant Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, in January. At its closet, the spacecraft came within 81,800 kilometers (50,600 miles) of Uranus's cloudtops on Jan. 24, 1986. Voyager 2 radioed thousands of images and voluminous amounts of other scientific data on the planet, its moons, rings, atmosphere, interior and the magnetic environment surrounding Uranus.

Voyager Team Celebrates Engineering Data Return

After receiving data about the health and status of Voyager 1 for the first time in five months, members of the Voyager flight team celebrate in a conference room at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on April 20.

In a conference room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, members of the Voyager mission team gathered April 20, 2024, to find out if an issue on Voyager 1 had been partially resolved. Just after 6:40 a.m., a cheer went up around the room as the group heard back from the spacecraft: It was returning engineering data for the first time since November 2023.

Nearly two full days earlier, the team had sent a series of commands to move a section of software code used by the flight data subsystem (FDS) computer to a new location. The physical location where the code was previously stored has been damaged, causing the mission to go five months without receiving science or engineering data. But the commands were a success, and the team received data about the health and status of the spacecraft, prompting celebration.

The commands were sent on April 18, 2024. Due to Voyager 1's distance from Earth – over 15 billion miles or 24 billion kilometers – a radio signal takes about 22 ½ hours to travel to the spacecraft, and 22 ½ hours to return to Earth.

Shown are Voyager team members Kareem Badaruddin, Joey Jefferson, Jeff Mellstrom, Nshan Kazaryan, Todd Barber, Dave Cummings, Jennifer Herman, Suzanne Dodd, Armen Arslanian, Lu Yang, Linda Spilker, Bruce Waggoner, Sun Matsumoto, and Jim Donaldson.

Figure A shows additional Voyager team members reacting, including Bob Rasmussen, Andrew O'Dea, Ben Bornstein, and Jonathan Saucedo.

Create and add an email signature in Outlook

In Outlook, you can create one or more personalized signatures for your email messages. Your signature can include text, links, pictures, and images (such as your handwritten signature or a logo).

Note:  If the steps under this New Outlook tab don't work, you may not be using new Outlook for Windows yet. Select Classic Outlook  and follow those steps instead.

Create and add an email signature

On the View tab, select   View Settings .

Select Accounts > Signatures .

Select    New signature , then give it a distinct name.

In the editing box below the new name, type your signature, then format it with the font, color, and styles to get the appearance you want.

Select Save when you're done.

With your new signature selected from the list above the editing box, go to  Select default signatures and choose whether to apply the signature to new messages and to replies and forwards.

Select Save again.

Note:  If you have a Microsoft account, and you use Outlook and Outlook on the web or Outlook on the web for business, you need to create a signature in both products.

Create your signature and choose when Outlook adds a signature to your messages

If you want to watch how it's done, you can go directly to  the video below .

Open a new email message.

Select Signature from the Message menu.

Under Select signature to edit , choose New , and in the New Signature dialog box, type a name for the signature.

Under Edit signature , compose your signature. You can change fonts, font colors, and sizes, as well as text alignment. If you want to create a more robust signature with bullets, tables, or borders, use Word to create and format your signature text, then copy and paste it into the Edit signature box. You can also use a pre-designed template  to create your signature. Download the templates in Word, customize with your personal information, and then copy and paste into the Edit signature box.

Type a new signature to use in your email

You can add links and images to your email signature, change fonts and colors, and justify the text using the mini formatting bar under Edit signature .

You can also add social media icons and links in your signature or customize one of our pre-designed temlates. For more information, see Create a signature from a template .

To add images to your signature, see Add a logo or image to your signature .

Under Choose default signature , set the following options.

In the E-mail account drop-down box, choose an email account to associate with the signature. You can have different signatures for each email account.

You can have a signature automatically added to all new messages. Go to in the New messages drop-down box and select one of your signatures. If you don't want to automatically add a signature to new messages, choose (none). This option does not add a signature to any messages you reply to or forward.

You can select to have your signature automatically appear in reply and forward messages. In the  Replies/forwards drop-down, select one of your signatures. Otherwise, accept the default option of (none).

Choose OK to save your new signature and return to your message. Outlook doesn't add your new signature to the message you opened in Step 1, even if you chose to apply the signature to all new messages. You'll have to add the signature manually to this one message. All future messages will have the signature added automatically. To add the signature manually, select Signature from the Message menu and then pick the signature you just created.

Add a logo or image to your signature

If you have a company logo or an image to add to your signature, use the following steps.

Open a new message and then select Signature > Signatures .

In the Select signature to edit box, choose the signature you want to add a logo or image to.

Insert an image from your device icon

To resize your image, right-click the image, then choose Picture . Select the Size tab and use the options to resize your image. To keep the image proportions, make sure to keep the Lock aspect ratio checkbox checked.

When you're done, select OK , then select OK again to save the changes to your signature.

Insert a signature manually

If you don't choose to insert a signature for all new messages or replies and forwards, you can still insert a signature manually.

In your email message, on the Message tab, select Signature .

Choose your signature from the fly-out menu that appears. If you have more than one signature, you can select any of the signatures you've created.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as the twister tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Some injuries were reported but there were no immediate reports that anyone was killed.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.

Photos on social media showed ravaged homes and shredded trees. Video showed homes with roofs stripped of shingles, in a rural area near Omaha. Law enforcement were blocking off roads in the area.

Hundreds of houses sustained damage in Omaha, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city, Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters are now going door-to-door helping people who are trapped.

Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said crews had gone to the “hardest hit area” and had a plan to search anywhere someone could be trapped.

“They’re going to be putting together a strategic plan for a detailed search of the area, starting with the properties with most damage,” Bossman said. “We’ll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we’ll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance.”

Bonacci said many homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

“You definitely see the path of the tornado,” Bonacci said.

In one area of Elkhorn, dozens of newly built, large homes were damaged. At least six were wrecked, including one that was leveled, while others had the top half ripped off.

There were dozens of emergency vehicles in the area.

“We watched it touch down like 200 yards over there and then we took shelter,” said Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn. “We could hear it coming through. When we came up our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone.”

His wife, Kim Woods added, “The whole neighborhood just to the north of us is pretty flattened.”

Dhaval Naik, who said he works with the man whose house was demolished, said three people, including a child, were in the basement when the tornado hit. They got out safely.

KETV-TV video showed one woman being removed from a wrecked home on a stretcher in Blair, a city just north of Omaha.

Bonacci said only two people have been transported for treatment, both with minor injuries.

He said crews are now doing a second search of homes. He said fire crews would work throughout the night to check all the unsafe structures and make sure no one is inside.

“People had warnings of this and that saved lives,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said, of the few serious injuries.

The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed. Hours later, buses were still transporting students home.

“Was it one long track tornado or was it several tornadoes?” said Becky Kern, the warning coordination meteorologist in the National Weather Service’s Omaha office.

She said the agency planned to send out multiple crews over the next several days to determine the number of tornadoes and their strength, and that it could take up to two weeks to finish the evaluation.

“Some appeared to be violent tornadoes,” she continued. “There were tornadoes in different areas. And so it’s like forensic meteorology, we call it, like piecing together, all the damage indicators.”

Another tornado hit an area on the eastern edge of Omaha, passing directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city’s airport. Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said.

The passenger terminal wasn’t hit by the tornado but people rushed to storm shelters until the twister passed, McCoy said.

Flight delays are expected Friday evening.

After passing through the airport, the tornado crossed the Missouri River and into Iowa, north of Council Bluffs.

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Katrina Sperl said damage is just now being reported. Taylor Wilson, a spokesperson for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said they hadn’t seen any injuries yet.

Before the tornado hit the Omaha area, three workers in an industrial plant were injured Friday afternoon when a tornado struck an industrial plant in Lancaster County, sheriff’s officials said in an update on the damage.

The building just northeast of the state capital of Lincoln had collapsed with about 70 employees inside and several people trapped, sheriff’s officials said. Everyone was evacuated, and three people had injuries that were considered not life-threatening, authorities said.

Sheriff’s officials say they also had reports of a tipped-over train near Waverly, also in Lancaster County.

Two people who were injured when the tornado passed through Lancaster County were being treated at the trauma center at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, the facility said in a news release. It said the patients were in triage and no details were released on their condition.

The Omaha Public Power District reported that nearly 10,000 customers were without power in the Omaha area.

Daniel Fienhold, manager of the Pink Poodle Steakhouse in Crescent, Iowa, said he was outside watching the weather with his daughter and restaurant employees. He said “it looked like a pretty big tornado was forming” northeast of town.

“It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that’s when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it,” Fienhold said.

The forecast for Saturday was ominous. The Weather Service also issued tornado watches across parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. And forecasters warned that large hail and strong wind gusts were possible.

“It does look like a big outbreak again tomorrow,” Kern said. “Maybe slightly farther south.”

Hollingsworth reported from Mission, Kansas. Associated Press writers Jack Dura in Bismarck, North Dakota, and Jeff Martin in Atlanta contributed to this report.
