Storyline [ ]

Jiminy Cricket greets the player and tells a story that he hopes is "sure to make you smile". One morning, Chip and Dale are out gathering acorns in the Magic Kingdom when they discover a small door in the side of Cinderella Castle . After going through the door, they discover the Walt Disney World Magic Machine, a contraption that shoots firework shows every night. When they get close to it, Dale accidentally drops some of the acorns he collected into it, causing it to stop functioning. They run for cover as it explodes, scattering several pieces across the resort. With the help of several park visitors, they race across the resort to find the pieces and reassemble the machine before the show starts that night.

  • Jiminy Cricket

Jiminy is a courteous, gentle storyteller who loves to tell jokes and sing songs. He’s also the most knowledgeable when it comes to racing and Walt Disney World. He taught Chip and Dale everything they know about both. But watch out if he ever ends up behind the steering wheel, because he knows the best routes to use, and every track is his specialty.

  • Chip and Dale

Chip and Dale often race around Walt Disney World collecting nuts for the winter. Now they must collect the Fireworks Machine pieces before the end of the day! Chip is smart and practical, and he uses his brains whenever he races. So be careful, or Chip will sneak past you faster than you can say “acorn”. Dale enjoys life to the fullest, and doesn’t take anything seriously. And though he is a bit scatterbrained, he somehow manages always to be near first place at the end of a race. Call it blind luck or a charmed life, either way Dale is always a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack.

Amanda is the most famous, cutest child actress in the world. It’s no surprise that she absolutely loves being recognized at the Disney Studios. Where else can she continue to work and still have tons of fun on her days off the movie set? She is always sweet and nice and cute...unless she’s behind the wheel! When Amanda is in the driver’s seat, she doesn’t get upstaged! She races to win!

Here’s one girl who has a hard time acting her age! Normally a 13-year old would relate to the Disney Princesses , but alas, she does not. She feels as though the Disney Villains have been hard done by, and that includes her friend, Baron Karlott. This “Queen” is going to make sure everyone else feels the same way...by beating all the racers to the finish line!

Root'n Toot'n Sheriff'n is what he wants to do. He’s spent many a day trying to keep Bruno Biggs under control! This kid mostly moseys around at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad , where the West is still Wild. Moe saunters around at a snail’s pace, but there’s nothing slow about the way he drives!

Otto has spent most of his short life around cars and experiments. It’s a no-brainer to think he would be attracted to Test Track at Epcot . But he’s no crash dummy; he’s one of the smartest kids around. And the rest of the gang love him ‘coz he helps them fix their vehicles! He is the classic educated techie-nerd. Word is he soups up his cars so he can’t lose! Keep an eye on him!

Bruno is a huge fan of the world’s most famous mouse. The more he’s at Walt Disney World, the closer he can be to Mickey . He’s big, and mean, and tough. Don’t mess with him! Bruno is impatient and doesn’t like people getting in his way...especially on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster , his favorite attraction.

Polly dreams of action and adventure. Captaining her own Spanish galleon and searching for buried treasure is all she can think about. But for now Walt Disney World and history books are her escape. That’s why Polly is an expert at navigating the mysterious waterways of the Pirates of the Caribbean .

Baron is a modern day descendant of the famous Karlott bloodline. He continually strives to keep his ancestors happy, otherwise they come and visit...from the grave. That is why he feels right at home in the Haunted Mansion , and also why he drives with such a “grave” purpose.

The son of a famous explorer and paleontologist, Oliver is proud to walk in his father’s shoes - even though they are a few sizes too big. He figured out that the perfect place to get started on his quest was Animal Kingdom . Oliver is very soft spoken and drives very carefully. But watch out! He may sneak past you on the back straightaways if you aren’t careful!

  • Ned Shredbetter

Ned surfs. Ned skates. Ned snowboards. Ned blades. He basically is an all-round cool dude. Ned also likes showing off his moves for Amanda Sparkle! The only other thing Ned likes just as much as shredding is chilling at Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon . Ned is the classic beach bum, but there’s nothin’ laid back about his driving style...it’s all out!

This Xperimental Utility Duck was built to test out all the attractions at Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, he’s been bounced around and hit in the head a little too much. He prefers to stay in the world of Space Mountain because that’s where he gets his biggest charge. But when he’s out of his element, watch out for his driving...he’s wild, out of control and all over the place!

Voice Cast [ ]

  • Eddie Carroll as Jiminy Cricket
  • Tress MacNeille as Chip , Otto Plugnut, and Polly Roger
  • Corey Burton as Dale , Bruno Biggs, and Moe Whiplash
  • Michelle Horn as Amanda Sparkle and Tiara Damáge
  • Shaun Fleming as X.U.D. 71, Ned Shredbetter, Oliver Chickly III, and Baron Karlott

The soundtrack features authentic Disney music from the attractions, with the exception of Space Mountain, which features music from the Disneyland version (due to the game being released nine years before "Starry-O-Phonic Sound" was installed on Florida's Space Mountain), and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, which does not feature Aerosmith as the actual attraction does.

Interestingly, the soundtrack contains at least three holdovers from past Crystal Dynamics games. The music for DINOSAUR is lifted from the Prehistory Channel level of Gex: Enter the Gecko . The music for Blizzard Beach is lifted from Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko , albeit with the portion containing the Gex 3 theme replaced by a section of "Tis the Season to be Jolly". Lastly, the music for the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is derived from Total Eclipse ’s Aqueous Major, the first level in the game. All of these games have been released on the PlayStation (Total Eclipse was released as "Total Eclipse: Turbo"), a console which it is also on.

  • The player does not need to get 1st place on the Splash Mountain course in order to win the game.
  • To unlock XUD, one must collect all of the fairies in each track. To unlock Ned, one must complete the trophy challenge.
  • Jiminy Cricket, Chip and Dale are the only pre-established characters playable in this game. Every other character is completely original.
  • The cover art used on the European release is likely a previous version of the art. The designs used for Otto and Ned (who is absent from the later cover art) are much different than the ones used in game.
  • Interestingly, a few months later, a Disney racing game was released for Nintendo 64, this being Mickey's Speedway USA . It's possible that Mickey's Speedway USA began conceptually as a Nintendo 64 port of this game but was later changed either because of technical limitations of the Nintendo 64, or because of contractual obligations with developers and publishers, as the Nintendo 64 game was developed by Rare instead of Crystal Dynamics.

Walt Disney World Quest cover

Since 3D Cra zy Coaster graced the Vectrex in 1983 , theme park video games have come in two flavors - simulation and minigame collection. Disney’s done both, from Adventures in the Magic Kingdom on the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Coaster series on PC. There are highs and lows of both styles - Virtual Magic Kingdom , a glorified ad campaign, was so beloved it lives on as a fan-made recreation - but it's the outliers that are most interesting.

Of those few, Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour is the farthest afield. It's also a contradiction down to its CD-ROM soul - a one-of-a-kind knockoff.

Without Super Mario Kart , there would be no Mario Kart 64 , but without Mario Kart 64, there would be no kart racing as we know it.

Released in all territories within six months of the Nintendo 64's release, Mario Kart 64 provided the new console with its first multiplayer killer app. Instead of taking impatient turns running around Super Mario 64 , players could now run into three other friends simultaneously. It wasn't just more play for the money - it was free advertising for Nintendo's 3D miracle machine and boy did it work.

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64 remains the second best-selling game of its console and the fourth of its generation. The legacy of the series, twelve releases and four generations later, is unquestionable.

The fallout of the series is a lot easier to question.

What do Smurfs, M&Ms, and the Burger King have in common? They all starred in their own kart racing games, for better or mostly worse. Mario Kart 64 started a licensing gold rush. Every company, ad campaign, and out-of-fashion cartoon with a cast of marketable characters got in on the fun. The best pretenders to the throne came from within the medium - Diddy Kong Racing on Nintendo 64 and Crash Team Racing on PlayStation. Everything else was a crapshoot. Flawed standouts took inspiration from floundering multimedia franchises ( Muppet RaceMania ) and inherently plotless toylines ( Lego Racers ).

And then there’s Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour , the only Mario Kart knock-off based on a theme park. Stranger yet, it doesn’t even pass the “cast of marketable characters” test.

If gamers wanted to personally run Donald Duck off the road, they’d have to wait until Christmas 2000 for Mickey’s Speedway USA. The game with Disney in title shipped months earlier with no playable racers more famous than Chip or Dale.

Magical Racing Tour title screen

Given the proximity and blindspots of the titles, it’s not hard to see a contractual symbiosis between Mickey’s Speedway USA and Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour .

Speedway was developed by the legendary Rare, then-veterans of Diddy Kong Racing and soon-to-be famous for Banjo-Kazooie , only for the Nintendo 64. It made sense for all parties involved. Disney put its most famous characters in the hands of the most famous kart-racing studio for a stacked-deck debut on the console most famous for kart-racing.

Walt Disney World Quest feels like leftovers by contrast. Chip, Dale, and Jiminy Cricket are the only household names in the roster. Besides his triune silhouette, Mickey Mouse is entirely MIA. Crystal Dynamics, riding high off its Gex series, handled development despite little racing experience. It was eventually released on all major contemporary consoles except the Nintendo 64.

Time and the internet have been kind to Mickey’s Speedway USA , a solid entry in a beloved genre by a beloved developer on a beloved console. It’s the kind of game tailormade for “hidden gem” re-examination, despite critics at the time taking issue with its bland simplicity.

Mickey's Speedway USA box art

Time and the internet both seem to have forgotten Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour . Archived reviews only gave it exhausted endorsement - IGN hedged its thumbs-up with, “Nobody NEEDS another Kart racing game.” The occasional YouTuber plays it for a lark now and again. But by and large, Magical Racing Tour doesn’t have nearly the nostalgic prestige of Speedway and that’s an absolute crime.

There may be no greater must-play for Walt Disney World die-hards.

The story centers on a one-off piece of park lore - the Walt Disney World Magic Machine. It looks like a Mary Blair moonlander and makes the fireworks, uh, work. When Chip and Dale, still observing Rescue Rangers dress code, find the contraption behind Cinderella Castle, they do what any self-respecting guests would: stuff it so full of nuts the thing implodes.

Magic Machine blueprints

The quest in Walt Disney World Quest is to find the scattered debris before showtime, wherever it may have landed on property. Fear not, though - there’s no time limit here. The plot’s just an excuse for Eddie Carroll, the longest-serving Jiminy Cricket, to spin the opening cutscene like a fairytale and then get out of the road. The crucial difference between Magical Racing Tour and Speedway , not to mention its knock-off colleagues, is that the courses are the characters.

Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour

Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour is a racing game developed by Crystal Dynamics (with LTI Gray Matter developing the Windows port) and published by Eidos Interactive . The game is based on the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and features several tracks based on Walt Disney World attractions and thirteen playable racers; Chip, Dale (both appearing in their Rescue Rangers outfits), Jiminy Cricket , and ten original characters made for the game.

The game was released for Windows on January 24, 2001.

The game has been out-of-print for years, likely due to the constant changes to the resort since; some of the depicted attractions such as Test Track and Splash Mountain have either been refurbished or permanently closed since the game's release.

Walt Disney World: Magical Racing Quest Review

Magical Racing Tour has more than enough style - and it offers a different enough experience - to make the game worthwhile.

By on April 28, 2000 at 10:56PM PDT

Though the name may be quite a mouthful, Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour is a wonderful lighthearted cart-racing game that fans of the genre will surely enjoy. Followers of the world of Disney will also undoubtedly be attracted to the game levels, which are modeled after many of the popular attractions at Walt Disney World. Either way, it's hard to go wrong with WDWQMRT.

The story behind the game is that Chip and Dale have accidentally clogged up the Magic Kingdom's fireworks machine with a few accidentally placed acorns. The machine then went haywire and exploded, sending pieces of the machine to nearly every location of the park. It's up to you to race with everyone else in the park and collect pieces of the machine so it can be put back together.

You can select from a variety of Disney characters such as Chip and Dale, Moe Whiplash, Bruno Biggs, Otto Plugnut, Polly Roger, and Baron Karlott - just to name a few. The game does have a few other characters that are hidden and that can be unlocked by completing the game.

Playing as the Disney character is a lot of fun, but the real treat is exploring the levels you get to race through. All 13 of the game's levels are modeled after the popular rides and attractions within the Magic Kingdom, such as Big Thunder Mountain, the Haunted Mansion, and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Each level is altered so that you can race in and through different parts of the attraction. In addition, most of the levels have specific vehicles that fit the theme of the attraction. For instance, when you reach the Space Mountain track all of the racers pilot little one-man hover/rocket ships. The different vehicles really don't control all that differently, but they add a bit of verity and style.

The gameplay of Disney's Magical Racing Tour is straightforward, fun, and involving. It has the typical cart-racing game setup where you race laps around a track and pick up items like teacups and acorns, which you can launch at your opponents. Controlling the carts is very easy - all you really do is steer, accelerate, and break. The only real strategy in the game comes into play when you are trying to take shortcuts or when you are using items.

Visually, Magical Racing Tour is very nice. The game moves at a brisk pace and provides a wonderful sense of speed. Moreover, the levels never really pop up in front of you - the point at which the level is drawn in is always far out of view. All of the characters are very detailed and articulated, as are the various vehicles they pilot through the levels. The levels themselves are awesome; when racing, you find yourself being distracted by objects and characters that you've seen before throughout the game.

In the audio department, Magical Racing Tour does a great job of re-creating the experience of visiting the park. The game's opening and menu screens are accompanied by the infamous It's a Small World ditty, which gets under your skin just as fast as it does in real life. Each of the levels has the specific music and sound effects that you'd hear if you were actually at the park on the ride. During the Pirates of the Caribbean level, you can hear the individual animatronic characters speaking the lines that have made the ride such a favorite.

Disney's Magical Racing Tour on the surface may just seem like another Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing clone, and once you spend any amount of time with the game you'll realize that, at its core, it truly is one. However, with its awesome levels, characters, vehicles, shortcuts, items, overall presentation, and gameplay, Magical Racing Tour has more than enough style - and it offers a different enough experience - to make the game worthwhile. In addition, those that love the world of Disney will find the game to be a surprising treat that is wonderfully fun, not only for its content but also for its gameplay.

Retro Review: Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour

title

Note: I’m just going to start calling this game Disney World Quest to make this easier for everyone.

What sets Disney World Quest apart from competitors is the game’s imaginative tracks, although in terms of kart control it’s also fairly unique. Racing is fast, yet rarely frustrating thanks to a generous handling model where the vehicles stick to the track and turn quickly with great precision. As you’d expect there’s a drift/powerslide function (complete with bunnyhop) mapped to the right trigger, and this allows for sharp, right-angled manoeuvres that let you take the corned at speed. It also enables a slight turbo boost – this is even easier to activate than in similar games that are also available.

After a few races to get use to the mechanics, there’s no doubt that Disney World Quest feels great. It’s fast, responsive, and extremely fun. The Dreamcast’s analogue stick also lends itself well to the tight controls. I perhaps picked up on this in particular after playing fair bit of Lego Racers last week, a fun game that (at least on PlayStation) is really let down by some awful digital controls. Disney World Quest was released in the year 2000, and it’s easy to take for granted so many things it does right when many of its contemporaries were making up the rules as they went along.

The Dreamcast release has a few further advantages. Although SEGA’s final console was of the same generation as the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox, it was released a few years earlier, and is inherently more retro than these later machines. Many games from the PS1 and Nintendo 64 were ported over, and the Dreamcast library now holds the definitive version of many multi–platform titles. Disney World Quest is one of these games, having appeared first on the PlayStation. The Dreamcast outperforms it in graphic fidelity, and using the VGA output you can still get a crisp and impressive image on a modern TV.

The main bulk of Disney World Quest’s content is found in the game’s adventure mode, which includes a story that if you’re over the age of twelve you’ll probably want to ignore. Narrative has rarely made a racing game great, but thankfully it usually doesn’t detract either. There’s a couple of cutscenes you may be inclined to skip, but after that you can get right into the good stuff.

You’re initially greeted with a map of Disneyland and the selection of rides/tracks is presented. Although you can look over them, there’s only one you can race at first, with the others requiring progress to unlock. As you make your way through the game it’s a little unclear exactly when you’ll get these new courses, especially as they are ordered by location in the theme park, not by difficulty or unlock state. I was particularly looking forward to giving Splash Mountain a go, checking it every time I completed a race to see if it was selectable. It’s actually the last one you unlock.

6

Two of these three tracks are water based, and whilst this isn’t why they’re my favourite, boat racing is also a great element of the game. Whilst each track requires you to use an appropriate vehicle, it’s only the land/sea variation that provides a noticeable difference in handling and track physics.

The fun and varied racing at the heart of Disney World Quest is the obvious reason to persist against the game’s structural issues. Adventure mode is not only poorly presented, but tasks the player with confusing and illogical objectives. Your first task is winning races. This isn’t too bad, although the emphasis on first place means you’ll often be playing the same race again and again until you achieve the perfect run. Whilst the A.I. is never overly challenging, there’s no rubber banding. This means a bad crash often requires a restart, but when you’ve finally mastered the course it’s quite easy to win with a strong lead.

Once you’ve managed first place you can turn your attention to two other challenges. One is collecting flying wisps (which is exceptionally easy as you don’t have to make the podium on the same run, meaning if you miss one you can turn around and collect it without penalty). The other is winning first place, again.

I actually don’t mind an excuse to play the races a second time, although there’s no denying that this tour goal is unimaginative. After two wins trophy collecting is on the agenda. Eight cups are hidden across the track and these must be collected in a timed run, which requires understanding every shortcut, finding every trophy, and then working out a run in which you can collect them all effectively. The problem with this is it’s not very fun, and you can’t go back to a simple race against the A.I. until you’ve got them trophies. With no single race option, after two wins this is literally all you can play on the tracks you’ve unlocked, and you can’t do anything else until you’ve endured the tedium of trophy hunting.

How to play walt disney world quest: magical racing tour windows.

Install & play guide:

  • Mount the disc image. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 102% or Daemon Tools Lite
  • Install the game
  • Also it is recommended to install DirectX from the disc (inside the disc image in "Setup" - "DirectX" folder)
  • Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't run - open the directory with the game and find WDWRacing.exe. Right click on WDWRacing.exe - Properties - Compatibility - Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows XP" (try different compatibility modes, the game has troubles with launch on 64-bit systems).
  • Also try to launch the game, then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del by default) and check for processes WDWRacing.exe and rundll32.exe. Close WDWRacing.exe but don't touch rundll32.exe (it's a Windows app for running old apps from 32-bit operational systems, most old games running through rundll32.exe). Now try to launch the game again, it must work. Don't forget to close rundll32.exe process in Task Manager after finishing playing.
  • The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit, works fine. The game supports widescreen

Troubleshooting:

  • Sometimes game may crash in random moments, also the game may freeze when you quit it. In that case just close the game process through Task Manager
  • To avoid possible errors better not to skip in-game videos, including intros (do not press Esc button)
  • During first launch configure keyboard controls, by default there's no selected keys for moving
  • The work on Windows 8 and Windows 10 is not guaranteed. If you installed the game following the instruction but still can not play the game - try this: mount the disc image, copy all the files from the disc to some folder on your hard drive, go to "Setup" - "WDWRacing" - "System" and copy all files from "System" directory to the main "WDWRacing" directory, then launch the game from WDWRacing.exe (keep the disc image mounted in virtual drive). If it still doesn't help - right click on WDWRacing.exe - Properties - Compatibility - "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows 98" and select boxes "Reduced color mode 16-bit", "Run in 640x480 resolution", "Disable fullscreen optimization" (this method worked on the laptop with integrated Intel video card and Windows 10)
  • If none of the methods worked - use PCem app

Walt Disney World Quest : Magical Racing Tour

We take a look at the Dreamcast version of the kids' racing title from Disney. It's a Mario Kart wannabe, but how bad does it want it?

walt disney world quest magical racing tour remake

Hijinx in Disneyland

Ever since I reviewed Magical Racing Tour on the PlayStation I've been itching to see what a little extra time and effort could do for the Dreamcast incarnation. It's been quite a while in the coming for some reason, but now it's here.. and very little has changed. For those of you who cannot be bothered to go and read my original review (shame on you!), MRT is a racing title inspired by the Mario Kart generation. In other words the story is irrelevant to the action, the action itself is frenetic and half of the challenge is to make cunning use of the powerups and shoulder-button-jump powerslides. What is gained by adding a third dimension to the Mario Kart formula however is also lost against the often insurmountable challenge and the glitchy graphics. MRT places you in the shoes of Chip and Dale, the Chipmunks (although you can play as other Disney characters too), and unfortunately for Disneyland you have accidentally dropped some acorns into the "magic machine" that deals with the fireworks display. As such it has vomitously discharged its electrical innards and expects you to go and find them again in time for tonight's show! This is all lovingly explained to you by Mr. Jiminy Cricket, who appears in beautifully rendered cutscenes and provides hints in reconstructing the machine on the status page. We still don't understand why this collecting of pieces takes the form of a series of races against other Disneyland occupants nor why some of the races take place at night despite the "before tonight's show" emphasis. It's all in the name of fun for the children though, so we won't knock it. What we will knock however, is the graphics, sound, gameplay and challenge, in that order.

And so it was..

Our little furry friends have all been gloriously recreated and look very happy sat in their little choo-choo trains on Thunder Mountain and so-forth, but there are several issues pertaining to the graphics that trouble me still. For instance, why do certain tracks have intricately detailed and textured extras while others look like they were decorated with finger-paint? Space Mountain, one of Disney's most expensive and impressive rides has been desecrated for MRT by artists who believe space travel is visually reminiscent of two textures flashing over and over.. and on Splash Mountain too; according to those artists, waterfalls involve blue sprites that partially obscure the screen and pixels flashing at the bottom to indicate froth. Thankfully these are targetted complaints and for the most part the game looks far nicer on the Dreamcast than it did on the PlayStation, but areas like those in which the polycount isn't necessarily all that high anyway could have done with some attention, methinks. What was next? Ah, sound. Yes, tricky one this. Developers Crystal Dynamics are given full reign over possibly some of the most fluid and entertaining musical scores in the history of anything. Disney soundtracks are chock-full of memorable tunes and many of them are to be heard at Disneyland, with ambient speakers picking up from one another as the people are hurled around the rides. However, instead of preserving these musical gems, Crystal Dynamics have sliced them up into little soundbites that are played over and over again. For example, on Splash Mountain, your ears are pierced by the soothing melody of the "Zippadee-doo-da, Zippadee-ay" tune.. over and over again. The soundbite consists of the opening four lines of the song repeated throughout and eventually it gets so tedious you give up in disgust. This is the same for pretty much all of the tracks. I turned the music off after a couple of levels. Now, one area I feel it's a little unreasonable to overly criticize is the gameplay, since I have already described MRT as doing "enough to the karting genre to keep it afresh" and I admitted that "you can't help but feel endeared to it". Despite having played it a month or two ago, I still feel the same; MRT is excellent fun. The way the designers have modelled the tracks around twelve real Disneyland courses is truly commendable, even with relatively new attractions like "Dinosaur" featured. The only gameplay-related aspect of MRT I find disagreeable is the level of difficulty. The other competitors on the race track seem to outwit and outpace you quite easily, which is a disappointment, and as such the core audience of children who would lap this game up may be unable to play it.

Despite the considerable amount of work that has gone into Magical Racing Tour, it shoots itself in the foot on several counts. When I reviewed it some time ago on the PlayStation I gave it an overall rating of 8/10, pointing out that it has Disney's inimitable charm, but it was let down slightly by its difficulty level and sound issues. Further on in the year, much better alternative racers are starting to appear, and as such it's harder to recommend than it was. The graphics are definitely an improvement on the PlayStation version though, and the multiplayer is still good, harmless fun, so ultimately I'm going to give it the same rating. Check it out if you don't own the PlayStation version and have a yearning for a Mario Kart-a-like.

Solid Racing Game Mixed With Lame Characters.

The Good There is a lot to like about this game if you're a fan of the Disney Theme Parks. Each track is a faithful adaption of the classic rides that make up the four theme parks in Disney World, complete with music, sound effects, and voice-overs. Players who simply take the time to explore the tracks can find almost all of the familiar landmarks from each ride accurately represented with the familiar animations and one-liners.

The track designs are a lot of fun for a kart racer. While not Mario Kart, the levels offer a lot of diversity in the design and scenery, complete with multiple shortcuts, and power-ups to trip up the other racers. There are a lot of impressive special effects throughout the game, and the backgrounds are busy. Most importantly, the control is tight and responsive. Even with a steering wheel.

The multi-player is solid as well, with a smooth frame rate, even in four-player. This is a fun multi-player game. The Bad I have never seen a Disney game that employs a lamer storyline or character selection choices.

The story is utterly illogical. Chip and Dale spill acorns into the Disney World fireworks machine (do they really have one?), and the parts fly all over the park (those who have been to the Orlando park knows that the blast radius would have to be pretty impressive to accomplish such a feat). So the two chipmunks decide to stage kart races around the resort to win the pieces back. Again, this story defies logic, so don't try to understand this.

The other most glaring flaw is that, with the exception of Chip, Dale and Jiminy Cricket, the new characters created exclusively for this game are incredibly lame. Why they didn't use the hosts and mascots from the different rides is beyond me, as it would have been a much more understandable choice. Why they didn't use ANY familiar Disney characters is beyond me.

And finally, for the Dreamcast version, the music and sound effects are incredibly muted. This can be adjusted properly in the "Options" menu, but the fact that the audio, one of the more impressive aspects of this game, is so muted.... Well, it goes up there with the storyline and character choices. The Bottom Line Despite the heinously lame character choices and ridiculous story, don't be fooled into thinking this is a bad game by any means. It's a very competent Mario Kart clone with great tracks and audio. In single player, there are a lot of hidden items to find. In multi-player, the races are fast and addicting. In any mode, the game is fun.

This is easily recommended to anyone who is a fan of the theme parks, and who enjoy the heated competition of a good kart racer.

In the game, Chip and Dale are wearing their outfits from their Disney Afternoon television show "Chip 'N' Dale Rescue Rangers", which was also a NES game from Capcom in the early 1990's.

am having a problem with the game when i open the game and i try to go on adventure mode the game just crashes but the time trials work just fine anybody know how to fix it??

So when I open Setup it opens and I can click on install but nothing happens and the window closes again. What am I supposed to do? Would appreciate some help.

does anyone know how to get the music working ingame? It works at start menu and some sound effects play when racing but no music 🙁 all sound files are there in .sd3 format but no music

For those having problem _SETUP.DLL try this method. found on internet.

On Windows 7/8/10/11 64bits I had to do the following to be able to start the installer: Create a folder named C:WindowsSysWOW64InstallShieldsetupdir809 Copy “setup/setupdir/0809/_setup.dll” from the ISO to the folder that was created in the previous line.

Where do I create this folder? On the same place the game is? Because he’s not yet installed so I guess it should be under the “ISO” folder? Could you be a little more precise please? Or maybe you recall where you found the info? Thanks in advance

Thank Biskut for the help, It worrked. But I am going to give more specific solution as I had difficult time following your instruction. what you should do, is going to the drive where you have windows folder (let’s say it‘s C). So you go to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\InstallShield\Setupdir after that you create a folder and name it 0809 (be careful, you should name it exactly like that for the Installation to work). Now after you created the 0809 folder in that specific location, you should copy (_Setup.DLL) file from another 0809 folder located in Game Installation folder to the 0809 folder you created. (That another 0809 folder located exactly in Game Installation Folder then: Setup\setupdir\0809). after that you should be ready to go. I hope this helped. ^_^ Sorry for any inconvenience as English is not my first language.

CANNOT FIND LOCATION FOR PLAY BUTTON; X AND Y LOCATION MUST BE NON ZERO HOW RESOLVE THIS ERROR

Hi there! This game for Windows is missing the _SETUP.DLL file, giving me an Error 103. My antivirus isn’t deleting it, it just doesn’t exist.

Getting an un able to find _SETUP.DLL error (103). I tried all the compatibility options, making sure my anti-virus is off when dl and installing c++ …, none of those changed the porblem. Any gueses?

You guys are fantastic! Ty to the site and its donors. Im so happy I get to play this

is it working for u perfectly? I’m trying..

hey, could you please put the windows version on the missing games list? thanks

yes of course, I’m not sure why it wasn’t on there to begin with

i have donated the windows version of the game, hope you guys got that (and Clifford Phonics is coming soon)

Hey, thanks a lot they should be uploaded today

Thankyou for donating, been ater this for a while

you are welcome mate 🙂

Setup is unable to find _SETUP.DLL, which is needed to complete the installation.

Can you help me?

well, that didn’t happen to me, but um, what version of Windows are you running it on? perhaps try compatibility mode

hi, i have the same problem, _SETUP.DLL is not found 🙁 i tried compatibility mode but it keeps telling me that setup is unable to find it
